SCOOP EXPERIENCING CULTURE AND EDM AT DREAMFIELDS BALI 2014

Bali once again will be the host of another massive dance music event; this time it’s the turn for Dreamfields Festival taking place on August 16 at GWK Cultural Park. Presented by Blackrock Entertainment in collaboration with Splendid Asia Events (MBFH Netherlands) and Matrixx Events, this festival will be the first of its kind in Bali and even in Indonesia providing three areas of EDM with over 40 national and international artists featured in the line-up. The Junction Music Festival The Junction Music Festival is celebrating its tenth year and will bring back their annual dance party events to Bali’s hottest and newest entertainment spots from August 28 to 31. X-Press 2 have been around for a very long time, roughly since the very early 90s. There used to be three of them; DJ Diesel, DJ Rocky and Ashley Beedle. Ashley moved on to pursue solo projects in 2009 but was a massive part and a big influence in what we call X-Press 2 today. So it came to be that the threesome became a duo but that didn’t mean that the music changed, they say everything is pretty much the same and are happy that they still remain good friends. The London duo share the same sense of musical discovery that first united them on the acid-hose dance floors of Shoom and Spectrum and the playgrounds of Ibiza.

‘Obviously, with Ashley leaving, the dynamic has changed’, says Diesel. ‘But we are carrying on the X-Press 2 sound and developing it.’ Their first hit single was titled ‘Say What’ and peaked at number 32 in the U.K. chart in October 1993. In October 2000 X-Press 2 released “AC/DC’, followed by “Muzikizum’, and “Smoke Machine” in 2001. A year later, the deep house single ‘Lazy’ anticipated their debut album, “Muzikizum” which features collaborations from electro/pop Yello’s Dieter Meier and Talking Head’s David Byrne. In 2006 the group released its second album, “Makeshift Feelgood”, and in 2008 arrived “Coast2Coast”, as did the greatest hits collection “Raise Your Hands (Best of X-Press 2).

Aril Brikha

As a cultural exile in Sweden, Aril Brikha has never been one to conform. Born in Iran with Assyrian ancestry, Brikha moved to the Scandinavian country at age three. He grew up in the small town of Jonkoping, four or five hours from Stockholm. In his early teens he developed his interest for electronic music – artists such as Depeche, Front 242 and Jean Michel Jarre. Brikha got a hold of an Atari sequencer at the age of 16 and he started emulating music from producers he liked, and then went on to composing his own tracks. Friends who heard his material told him it sounded like ‘Detroit techno’. Not knowing what that was, his buddies played him records by Robert Hood and Berlin’s Basic Channel and he agreed that this was the music he would end up rocking the world with.

WHERE YOU MIGHT HAVE HEARD them

Brikha started releasing little bits and bobs here and there whilst still living in Sweden. His first releases were on Swedish imprints; Dunkla, Plump and Placktown – but after realizing that his music wasn’t what the local labels wanted, he started looking for fresh outlets; among them Derrik May’s Transmat Records. Transmat ended up contracting Aril’s “Art of Vengeance” EP (with ‘Groove la Chord’) and issued it to his sister label, Fragile, in 1998. No one was more surprised about the success of Groove La Chord than Brikha himself – after all, he’d originally presented it on his demo as a potential B-side. Two years after he recorded ‘Groove La Chord’, Brikha heard it in a club for the first time – Derrick May pulled it out in Chicago and that is when Aril actually realized how good his track was.

WHY SEE them

Since forming this alliance with Transmat, Aril Brikha has toured solidly with his live shows. Playing everywhere from the Detroit Electronic Music Festival to clubs such as London’s Fabri and Tokyo’s Air and Yellow. Bali is up next and Jenja is the venue, head there on August 8 and experience his groove first hand.

Robbie Lowe is one of the best and probably the most influential DJs for the last two decades that Australia has had to offer. Robbie has always owned a trademark warm house and techhouse sound. Vibrant, deep underground baselines, crisp, snappy percussions and warm, soothing melodies are what he’s all about. You could say nothing has really changed too, Robbie used to be seen regularly in Sydney’s leading record stores, hunting for the latest End Recordings or Eukatech. His approach is not necessarily very different nowadays, either, its pretty much an ever-updated version of the style he has always had. And as far as mixing goes, he’s the man. Tight, clean and simply beautiful.

WHERE YOU MIGHT HAVE HEARD them

DJing since the early 90’s Robbie’s journey launched properly when he was offered a residency at one the top-notch clubs in Sydney, Greenwood. Here Robbie developed a solid fan base and in a blink of an eye became the talk of the town. From 2002, Sweetchilli promoters Daniel Crocetti and Crispin Kerr managed to hook in to Robbie’ s talent and directed him in the right direction, which resulted in focused and top quality sets with a whole lot of diversity. Beyond the Sweetchilli partnership, Robbie’s career has been filled with as much diversity as his sets. He’s been regularly talked about in Australia’s EDM magazines, Drum Media and 3D World, as well as a ton of radio spots both online and internationally. Robbie also started producing music with fellow Sydney producer Matt Rowan, and since has released on Hussle, Outta Limits, Rococo and Proton. So far Robbie has been busy re-mixing for the new Sydney Deep House Aficionado label and Miami’s Xima label.

Considered world class by fans and peers, Robbie Lowe maintains his presence amongst Australia’s electronic music artists as one of the best. Nobody is too sure about the acronym M.A.N.D.Y, an alias used by DJ/producer group formed by Philip Jung and Patrick Bodmer. They have used names like Me and You, but the mystery remains as to what M.A.N.D.Y means. Both hailing from Berlin, Germany their first meeting took place as 15-year-olds on a tennis court, the two youngens were already dying to be amongst the parties and DJs, little did they know that they were already destined for DJ world greatness. After being introduced to the sounds of early acid house in the late 80s their obsession with electronic music began. Later in the mid 90s, after completing university in separate cities Phillip and Patrick’s DJ dreams were reignited but nobody wanted to book them. This led to their decision to start their own club night in a local club in Frankfurt with the likes of Ata and Ricardo Villalobos who were talented nobodies at the time, which actually helped to create that spontaneous spark and freshness that the club needed and people noticed.

M.A.N.D.Y had a hell of a year in 2008, they were just starting to go big and got invited to play at two really memorable events that they wouldn’t forget. One at London’s Fabric, and the other at the rain-drenched Love Parade in Germany, where they played live for 500,000 music lovers who refused to run for cover and continued dancing in the streets for the stunned M.A.N.D.Y. The next chapter for the pair was triggered at a Bread & Butter show in Cologne, where M.A.N.D.Y’s DJ set caught the interested ears of Monza’s Patrik Dechent and DJ T, after seeing their enthusiasm they had, DJ T gave them a shot at being residents beside fellow residents Tobi Neuman, Tiefschwarz and Steve Bug. M.A.N.D.Y also collaborated with Booka Shade to create one of the biggest record labels to this day; Get Physical. Their first track on the label ‘Tonite’ blew up in the UK and was selected by Pete Tong as the Essential Tune of the week three times in a row for his BBC Radio 1 Show.

DJ duo KimKat consists of two gorgeous and very talented female DJs, Kim Lee and Katrina Nova. Kim is French-Vietnamese and Kat is Russian. They met in 2007 and have been friends ever since. At that time both were pursuing modelling careers and had much in common; however while Kim was dedicating her time to modelling and acting, Kat decided to proceed with a career in finance. Quickly after the friends discovered their shared passion for music, they received heavy encouragement from a number of people including support from the Black Eyed Peas’ own Apl De Ap, and began pursuing their dream of being internationally acclaimed DJs.

Dash Berlin, born as Jeffrey Sutorius in The Netherlands, is a true DJ at heart with a profound passion for dance music. He initially started playing drums influenced by his father who was a drummer in a jazz band, before discovering and becoming a fan of electronic music in his high school days. He worked in a record store and became a collector of vinyl trance music during his late teens, which then he began to mix and produce his own music, and started performing in the Dutch underground music scene in early 1995.

The breakthrough for Dash Berlin came in early 2007 with “Till the Sky Falls Down” on his legendary album Universal Religion, which went to the top of the trance charts worldwide. He won the IDMA award for the track “Waiting” in the category Best High Energy Track, and was nominated three times at the International Dance Music Awards. In Armin van Buuren’s popular radio show A State of Trance, this track was chosen by the audience as the second Best Trance Track of The Year 2009. In 2010, he was nominated for the Best European DJ at the IDMA and entered the DJ Mag Top 100 poll at number 15. He won the DJ Mag Top 100 Award for Highest New Entry during the magazine’s ceremony at the Ministry of Sound in London. In 2011, DJ Magazine announced the results of their annual Top 100 DJ Poll for the very first time in Amsterdam, with Dash Berlin placed at number eight in the world. In 2012, he received a nomination for Best Trance Track’ at the IDMA’s for his track with Jonathan Mendelsohn entitled “Better Half of Me”. Besides other nominations in his pocket throughout the year of 2013, he also made it to number 10 in the DJ Mag Top 100.

Ever wonder who is behind all those hammocks? do you want a ticket to the moon? Charly Descostis gets existential with David trauts and talks hammocks, life, society and travel.

Charly. Tell me about yourself, and it made perfect sense to use this fabric where are you from and how long for hammocks. At first, it was not intended as a profitable business, but just as a means have you been in Bali etc. I grew up in Normandie, a region of France, next to the beach. As a kid, I used my father’s fishing nets to tinker hammocks. My deep love for hammocks started when I first climbed in one! I had always wanted to travel, so I packed my belongings and flew to India. During my road trip there, my friends and I would gather in “hammock camps” where we would hang our hammocks; it was the easiest sleeping solution. I moved to Bali 18 years ago to discover the Indonesian culture and immediately fell in love with its charm and its overwhelming beauty.

Was there something in particular you liked about Bali to make you stay? Bali is a unique place that you adopt but it is also a place that adopts you. The richness of the culture, the kindness of the people as well as the breathtaking landscapes made me want to stay in Bali. I built my home, my family and my business on this island, and my life belongs here. I found what I was always looking for.

he first thing you’ll notice as you walk towards Velvet is that it’s in a mall. Most malls are solidly indoor affairs, but this mall comes with an amazing beachfront view and Velvet definitely has the best location in the building for looking out into the ocean. You can prominently see planes approach and take off from the airport which is quite mesmerizing and satisfying at the same time. The restaurant has an extensive patio area and the glass railing lets you have an unobstructed view of the beach and ocean below. Velvet wraps around the Hypnotized Club and the wall between the two is lined with cushioned seating with a bar to the side. The furniture is simple and elegant with plenty of shade in the afternoon. A bar and DJ booth are on the northwest side of the patio area which acts as a pleasant shade when the sun is a bit lower.

The two personalities responsible for the new menu implemented last month are Chef Youngki, who spent six years perfecting his culinary skills in the US, and his dear old friend from Bandung, Chef Sofian, who learned to cook in both Brazil and Australia. They revamped the menu into a more concise and pleasing set of delicious dishes.

Seared Tuna w/ Hollandaise Sauce (160k) which was superbly cooked and included gratinated potatoes. The hollandaise sauce worked really well with the tuna for a very satisfying hit of savory goodness in each bite. As for cocktails, try their Disoronno Infused (125k) which had a cinnamon stick across the top of the martini glass and had a subdued liqueur taste. Their Baby Yellow Oil (150k) was huge also prominently featured cinnamon and was tangy; if you order the cocktail during happy hour, you get another one free.

First thing we tried was the Bitterballen (35k), which was perfectly textured on the outside and nicely savory and smooth in the inside, an excellent starter.We also had their Salmon Belly Salad (55k) which had miso ginger dressing, salmon and roe. The dressing was pleasantly For desert, try their Flourless Chocolate Cake non overpowering leading to a nice balance (45k), excellently fudgy chocolate that was perfectly moist with every bite. between the salmon, leaves, and roe. They had an interesting take on the Shrimp Cocktail (65k), the shrimp was crusted in sesame seeds and the sauce was made up of fresh tomato paste and Bulldog sauce. It was a tangy experience and the sesame seeds added texture to the four shrimp.

All in all, Velvet is an excellent place to dine and just might be the premiere restaurant at Beachwalk Mall with its stunning view and friendly menu. If you feel a little frisky afterwards, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always Hypnotized club literally steps away where you can party the night away.

Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill... or so he thought. This Expendables is Pg-13 which is pretty lame, but with an all star cast, let’s hope the cameos and over the top action will be entertaining enough.

“I wish I was dead already” said Lana Del Rey in an interview last month, bemoaning the intense critical backlash she experienced shortly after her self-titled debut album hit shelves late in 2010. Born Elizabeth Grant, the diminutive 28-year-old starlet has copped more than her fair share of flak, as everyone on the Internet continues to argue over the authenticity of her ‘West Coast tear-streaked mascara bad girl’ persona. Any hints that this alleged façade may indeed all be a carefully marketed sham are quickly dispelled here on Del Rey’s third LP, which is shot through with tragic masochistic daydreams and unguarded confessions that are wholly uncharacteristic of the usual circumspect record company guff. You don’t have to dig too deep into her psyche to see that this self-styled “gangsta Nancy Sinatra” is the kind of girl who you really shouldn’t take home to meet your mum: “I get high on hydroponic weed” she tells us, before adding later; “I f*&ked my way to the top”. Keep listening and Ultraviolence is stuffed with similarly outrageous sound bites, the most disturbing of which is the line “He hit me and it felt like a kiss” from the title track, which is bound to raise eyebrows amongst concerned anti-domestic violence campaigners, Chris Brown, and of course anyone who reads the Daily Mail. To put things into perspective, the controversial line is actually borrowed from The Crystals’ 1962 song of the same name, but still, a peculiar and deeply tragic fantasy: “If my choice is to be with a lot of men, or if I enjoy a really physical relationship, I don’t think that’s necessarily being anti-feminist,” she stated in defence of her stance. It’s pretty dark, but offsetting the anguish is an intoxicating mix of simply beautiful melodies, thanks largely to Black Key Dan Auerbach on production duties. Apparently Del Rey had finished Ultraviolence some months ago, and a chance meeting with Auerbach resulted in the pair agreeing to rework everything to create a more ‘California hangover’ ambience. Woozy guitars, velvety strings and lazy beats swirl around the perennially suicidal chanteuse, whose breathy, sultry vocals have vastly improved over the last two years, despite being frequently channelled through purposely cheapo microphones bought at dollar stores to give all that tainted beauty a suitably rough edge. The recurring themes of illicit crushes, sexual promiscuity and drug use do get somewhat heavy handed, but Del Rey is clearly past caring what people think: “If you don’t like it, you can beat it baby,” she challenges on “Brooklyn Baby”, firmly aimed at all the haters out there. Alia Leadabrand

lia Leadabrand lived all around Australia and a little overseas with travelling musical parents until settling in Perth when she was eight. At the age of 18, she started travelling on her own, painting with incredible artists in Toronto, Tokyo and throughout Asia, exhibiting with groups and going solo.

Like all children, she loved drawing and painting. She never grew out of it because it was a compulsion. She realized that being a painter is an isolating and sometimes expensive career, but she also could not imagine another life for herself. She is a figurative hyperrealist morphing into a figurative surrealist, but she also likes to hope that her style is evolving into something even more individual. She has an intense relationship with color and layers, which she also considers an immense technical challenge and her way of portraying the hidden nature of peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true selves.

She is influenced by color and scents, by music and talk, by all the sensory experiences of human interaction and creation. She works with oils, but also uses photography and Photoshop to help create her images before painting them. Her exhibition â&#x20AC;&#x153;Durianâ&#x20AC;? is more multimedia; it is essentially painting and sculpture combined in which she employs the skills of local Balinese carver Wayan Kopi to continue the patterns of the painting into the durian wood frames. Her works usually are an effort to capture a metaphor of the self within and under the layers of presence, outer distractions and the chaos of the outer world. She think humans are all throwing themselves up against invisible walls in an effort to be authentic, and she would love for this concept to be read through her works. We paired it with a Honey Oatmeal Soothing Body Treatment, you know, because we want our skin to look pretty. The massage started with the

standard foot scrub which was a pleasant experience and moved on to the oatmeal honey scrub. Banana leaves were laid out on the massage table and a generous mix of the scrub was rubbed both in the front and back. The oatmeal and honey made an unmistakable cookie smell which delivered a pleasant bit of unintentional aromatherapy. After washing the scrub off in the shower, it was massage time and this massage uniquely used balm instead. It was truly amazing. The dry yet lubricating qualities of the balm made it feel like my body was made out of Teflon and the therapist’s hands glided on top in the most satisfying manner. The use of the palms and the constant rubbing away of surface tension would not have worked as well with oil and the use of Indian Kansu bowls at the end was a nice touch.

Thémaé products were used including that amazing balm. You had three choices, vanilla, lavender, and orange. Because I paired it with the honey oatmeal scrub, I chose the vanilla. It paired nicely. The honey oatmeal scrub was pretty much exactly as it was labeled, natural oatmeal mixed with natural honey and it was all that was needed.

Magic:

That balm. Wow. After being exfoliated, that balm made me feel as smooth as something smoother than silk. Trust us here, we try out a lot of spas and that was something uniquely different is the most pleasant way.
