I would hazard to guess that it’s almost ten years since the last big party within the fabled limestone walls of one of Bali’s greatest outdoor venues. SCOOP The Junction Music Festival is Back

The Junction Music Festival is celebrating its tenth year, bringing back the annual dance party events to Bali’s hottest and newest entertainment spots. Organized and promoted by Future 10 and Lupo Music, this decade celebration will showcase international DJs from the classic, deep house and tech music genres, as well as a lineup of Indonesia’s best DJs. The guest DJs on the list are Mr. Has (Singapore), Garth, Marshall Jefferson (US), Kele, Huxley (UK), Shiba San (France) and Tornado Wallace (Australia), supported by Bali international residents Stevie G, Lomas Gration, Danny Fry and Damian Saint. As the schedule states, the party will kick off at Hu’u Bar on Aug 28, continuing to Townhouse on the second day and Woo Bar on the third, ending at Mozaic Beach Club and Jenja on the last day, August 31. Legian Beach Festival to End August Legian Beach Festival is back for the eighth year to give visitors another fantastic experience with an array of fun activities. The Danish DJ and producer, Marcus Schossow is the rising name in electronic music scene, maintaining the buzz through his consistent releases on major labels such as Size Records, Axtone, Revealed, Big Beat and Spinnin Records. When he was 16, he played at a small Swedish club and realized that he had to make it in the scene. He rose to fame after the release of Tiesto’s mix compilation In Search of Sunrise 6, in which his track “Chase My Rabbit” was featured. He gained more attention with the release of “Mr. White” which automatically gained support from a whole host of DJs and music fans alike. Besides working on the decks, he also owns and manages his own label Tone Diary Recordings, which is licensed to world-renowned Dutch outfit Spinnin Records.

He also has had his name attached to many renowned figures in the industry including Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Paul Van Dyk, Leon Boiler, Orjan Nilsen, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and John Digweed to name a few. Murat Kilic is a very busy man. He is not only a talented DJ, but has mastered the art of record collection, production, radio broadcasting and running a label. Murat hails from Sydney, Australia and was raised by strict Turkish parents. He first came in contact with dance music like nearly all of us â&#x20AC;&#x201C; on the dance floor. Ed Mac, Jack Savidge and Edd Gibson met when they were studying at St. Albans School, and formed their first band called First Day Back when they were 13, which existed until they entered university. They began covering songs by Green Day and other rock-like artists, but turned their way to dance music upon leaving university. The name Friendly Fires originates from the opening track of Section 25’s LP Always Now, considering German techno label Kompakt, Carl Craig and Prince to be their greatest influences.

In late 2007, they became the first unsigned band to appear on Channel 4’s Transmission. Their single “Paris” was dubbed as “Single of the Week” in The Guardian newspaper and NME magazine, as well as on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show. In 2008, their track “White Diamonds” was featured in one of the episodes in the second season of Gossip Girl, while their other track “Jump in the Pool” was used as the theme tune of BBC1’s Final Score for the 2009/10 football seasons. Following the releases was their first LP Friendly Fires, which was certified double gold in the UK. The band was also nominated for the “Best Breakthrough Award” at The South Bank Show Awards, and for “Best Dancefloor Filler” at the NME Awards. In the beginning of 2010, they were nominated for two Brit Awards, for “Best British Group” and “British Breakthrough Act”. In 2011, their second album Pala was released with the first single “Live Those Days Tonight”.

Marshall Jefferson woo bar saturday aUGUST 30 Roots

There are very little people who have the title of Godfather of House. While many people make claims to the title of seniority by being there ‘at the beginning’, one man stands out from the crowd as being the one that actually defined house music. His name is Marshall Jefferson. He was born in Chicago in 1959, the son of a police officer and a school teacher. Heavily into hard rock like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple during the 70s, he then started heading out to places like Chicago’s Music Box club in the early 80s. After being exposed to Ron Hardy’s influential mixing style, Jefferson soon realized that house music had a real great feeling to it. Marshall ended up buying a synthesizer/sequencer combo and started passing newly recorded tapes on to Ron Hardy. The legendary DJ liked what he heard and started dropping some of Jefferson’s tracks into his sets.

In 1987 he produced the first ever acid house record using the TB 303 (which is now the most sought after vintage instrument for techno artists today), and simultaneously launched the successful career of DJ Pierre. It seemed like almost every song Marshall was producing was turning into another form of music. Marshall was the headlining act for the very first house music tour in Europe in 1987. The most impressive thing about Marshall is what separates him from all the others – he can consistently write the classic song. In early spring 1994 Marshall Jefferson came back from a four year break to his first love, DJing. 20 years on he is one of the biggest DJs to come out of Chicago having played in all the major events/clubs in Europe.

Mint has been doing some renovations as of late and the beat got down there to ascertain exactly what is happening at the Jl. Petitenget club.

o if you’ve been driving through Petitenget, you might have noticed that Mint has been getting a facelift of sorts. The most apparent change is the entire front section of the club seems to be under construction. What are they building? Well, Mint is going through a sort of evolution. Think of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, except Mint isn’t even close to its final form and the first thing that’ll be complete is their outdoor patio lounge. They envision it being a relaxing place to hang out seven days a week where you can enjoy cocktails and a live DJ. While the exact composition of the mixology that they’ll bring to the table

is still getting ironed out, they will a full bar dishing out delectable libations. It’ll be a cozy affair, with around 30 seats and room 60-80 ambulatory revelers. One sweet thing they intend on doing is serving a constant free flow of canapés. We love canapés. They’re magical. I mean really, you just sit there and drink and converse and they magically appear on a tray for you to enjoy. They’ll also have some excellent gourmet pizzas along with modern Mediterranean dishes to accompany mellow evening drinks. At about 1am, the plan is for the whole show to move indoors with the same Mint we’ve all grown to love only a bit more loungey according to their management.

Which leads to the next phase of their renovations which is due in the October November to timeframe. They want to utilize the higher ceiling to give it a bigger sense of space. And yes, they’re also devising plans to get more ventilation going to make the interior less… smokey. Their next phase in renovating is even more aggressive with a whole VIP lounge being built in the back where the kitchen is currently located which is due to be completed sometime in February. If you’re concerned about closures, worry not. Management assures us they’ll be open the entire time. They have a great set of staff from the very beginning and keeping them is actually quite high on their priority list along with keeping you Mint patrons happy.

Their residents, Damian Saint, Rozen, James Sullivan, and Hugo Marti are keeping the musical standards up and they plan on getting international DJs at least twice a month. Also, check out their new regular events such as Socail Club, which will have nu disco and soulful house currated by Damian Saint and Yan. It’s supposed to be a chilled atmosphere where one can converse and socialize. On the opposite spectrum, they have Hugo Marti’s shindig called Sonfade which will belt out some very deep house. So keep your eyes and ears open because Mint is changing with the times.

ejavu Kitchen sits right on the beach popularly known as Blue Ocean, Sunset Beach, and Double Six depending on who you ask and how long they’ve been living in Bali. It’s a pretty busy beach and is located right in between Kuta and Seminyak with numerous beach lounges and umbrellas located right out front. When you’re done sunbathing, sometimes it’s nice to hop across the road to enjoy a real meal and Dejavu is a strong option that lies in between a plethora of other restaurants that sit along the same strip. The first thing you’ll notice about the restaurant is the living wall that isn’t just aesthetically pleasing, but also serves as welcome shade during the sunset. We thought that was particularly clever. The second thing you’ll notice is the vintage look fostered by the

amount of old school posters lining the walls. By this time, your eyes and attention should have wondered towards their open kitchen before gazing down at the menu’s selection of Asian, Indonesian, grilled meats, seafood, pizzas, sandwiches, pastas, and other culinary fares. We were feeling experimental and decided to take a sample from a large part of the menu’s spectrum. First off, we tried their Gado Gado (55k) which is a collection of boiled vegetables, tofu, soy beans topped with peanut sauce. No surprises there, it was basic, yet solid. We also tried their Thai Beef Salad (70k) which had a nice amount of sauce as not to drown it. The coolest thing about it was the crown of papaya intricately sliced forming a barrier that kept the salad in the center of the dish. Another great appetizer was King Prawn (80k) which was served cocktail style and had panko bread crumbed batter over a bed of mango chutney. Next up was the Philadelphia Cheese Steak (75k) which was a hearty poboy sandwich filled with peppers, melted cheese and of course, steak. It came with a side of salad and French

fries that had Cajun seasoning sprinkled on top which we thought was a nice touch. Another excellent main was their Scallop Risotto (100k) which was nice and creamy and served slightly al dente. As for cocktails, we tried their Rasberry Fantasy (75k), raspberries orange juice, grenadine, vodka, and a slice of lemon. We also had their Tropical Retreat (75k) which had tequila, Blue Curacao, Midori, lime juice, and pineapple juice. Both were great tropical cocktails. All in all, Dejavu Kitchen was a pleasant experience with a relatively solid menu that had just about something for everybody. If you’re in the Legian beach area for lunch or dinner, it is well worth a gander.

It’s been a pretty rosy summer north of the border by all accounts; good weather, a triumphant Commonwealth Games, and the stirrings of a very real shot at Scottish independence seem to have all conspired to produce a patriotic mood not seen since Mel Gibson got the blue face paint out and mooned the Brits. With all this as a backdrop, the ever-prolific Kenny Anderson, AKA King Creosote has delivered a charming postcard to his beloved country in the form of the appropriately titled From Scotland, With Love. His thirtieth studio album (not counting the digital releases), the Fife native has often received criticism for his overwhelming and disjointed musical output, but as with 2001’s Mercury-nominated collaboration with electro-

wiz Jon Hopkins, it appears Anderson has once again found his focus. However, unlike the electro-folk of Diamond Mine, FSWL is a return to simple nostalgia and more traditional arrangements that gently meander through sea shanty, folk, and pop, to evoke a golden era of Scottish pride and heritage. Fittingly, the album was also written as the soundtrack to the BBC2 documentary A Century in Film, where each song is set to a collection of archive footage. Delivered without commentary and intended to be an historical yet unsentimental look at Scotland’s past, the film is a long way from the typical tartan, Highland Games and shortbread kind of tourist board stereotypes, instead concentrating on the personal struggles, lives, loves and working routines of its people. That’s not to say the album needs the images to work – the songs stand up perfectly well on their own, and along with Anderson’s

thick highlands accent, there’s a palpable passion in the song craft and lyrics that champion the downtrodden and less fortunate, perhaps most overtly seen in the rousing refrain of: “You’ve got to rise above the gutter you are inside” on “Pauper’s Dough”. At the album’s core is the breathless “For One Night Only”, capturing the party spirit of a rare night out on the town amidst Glasgow’s industrial decline, but this is just one tale. From the schoolyard chant of “Bluebell, Cockleshell, 123” to the biographical fishwife of “Cargill” (“I’m the finest catch that you’ll land”), each song takes on a different identity and in doing so captures the essence of Scottishness far more evocatively than any stuffy history lesson you may get. Whether you’re Scottish or not, FSWL is a deeply lifeaffirming work and a highlight of Anderson’s career. Dan Ashcroft

I Made Mahendra Mangku Made Mahendra Mangku is an artist and academic that continuously explores his art, using various mediums of watercolor and acrylic, as well as three-dimensional works.

Born in 1972, he started his artistic journey when he entered high school 1989 and the Institute of Arts Indonesia in Yogyakarta in 1992. Five years later, he finished his studies and made his way back to his hometown in Sukawati where he continued to share his artistic knowledge to a larger audience. As an artist who grew up in a village with solid traditions, and a strong aesthetic mindset. He portrays this strong tradition by putting shapes of Bali’s symbolism in his works. Otherwise, he creates his own way creatively by fusing tradition into modernity. He converts his visual experience into well-ordered and moving shapes, which then flow into a clear and harmonic movement. The shapes in his works appear from a creative process, blending together from the harmonization of lines and colors. The emergence of these shapes is unplanned, thus it becomes a cue that he puts so much concern on what is produced by the painting. Having his first solo exhibition in 1997, he has exhibited in numerous venues in Indonesia, as well as overseas locations like Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, United States and Germany. “Interior Journey” at Tonyraka Art Gallery is his ninth solo exhibition where he explores lines and colors deeper, and presents what he calls as ‘creative evolution’.

Photos Mick Curley Dreams do come true and they certainly did last week for Bali’s Garut Widiarta in the most spectacular waves seen in the Rip Curl Cup’s 11 year history. Dawn revealed corduroy lines stretching to the horizon of the Indian Ocean as a field of surfers that had waited five weeks finally witnessed the glory of the fearsome Padang Padang reef as good as it gets. With solid 6-8 feet bombs raging in against fierce trade wind conditions, it was an all Indonesian affair by the time the finals arrived. International surfers such as California’s Chris Ward, Hawaii’s Kekoa Bacalso and on form juniors Luke Hynd and Jacob Willcox were felled by local knowledge as cousins Garut Widiarta and Raditya Rondi stampeded into the final with grace and guts. Padang Padang at this size and power is not to be taken lightly, with giant sets closing out the channel, it was these two cousins who paddled out into the afternoon glare and did epic battle in career defining waves that set a new standard of performance in Indonesian surfing. It has been a long road for Bali’s favourite son, Garut Widiarta, whose flamboyant style has taken him close to the most prestigious winners

days in Indonesia but has never afforded him the win. Today, surfing with the confidence that only destiny can bring, Garut charged every gun nest and rifled his way through impossible barrel after barrel to ride to a convincing win. The Rip Curl Cup certainly lived up to its name as the world’s Ultimate Tuberiding Contest as a multi-national crowd lined the cliffs and flooded the beach to witness the phenomenon of Padang Padang’s rolling thunder. It was a breathless audience who watched on as the live broadcast brought all the action to an eager surfing world on what was the best surf on the planet for the day.
