It has been one of the busiest couple of weeks of entertainment and parties I can recall on the island and just when you thought it may be time for a rest, I took a look at this week’s main stage and just about fell over. What, more? It’s lucky there is a continual turnover of new people arriving or there wouldn’t be anyone left standing. But anyway, we pull ourselves together and soldier on the best we can. One of the highlights last week was August 16, typically one of the busiest nights of the year, which this year was on steroids with The Fashion Festival Bali opening, The White Party at Ku, the Dreamfields rave up in GWK and so many people around town that the place was ready to burst. The strange thing was that the traffic was so bad in the afternoon that on Saturday it had appeared that everyone, fearing the worse, decided not to take a car out on the Saturday night and the traffic was minimal, like a Monday evening. That was kinda weird, but the good thing was that every big show was packed and a major success; a predominantly foreign crowd at Ku and a predominantly local crowd at GWK. It shows that Bali has really hit the big stage in international standard entertainment and we applaud all those involved in making that night in particular a great success. However, there is no time to rest. Just check inside on the Main Stage pages to see for yourself that it appears the party has only just begun. Watch out for The Junction Festival this weekend which will be showcasing a set of excellent international DJs in a club near you for the tenth year in succession. There is also a flotilla of more action over the next two weeks, including our own FRV Bali gig on Friday night at Single Malt – check inside for all the details.

Bitcoin Travel Agency Launches in Bali Bitcoin Tour, an online booking agency that allows Bali travelers to exchange Bitcoin for their hotel, flight and tour reservations, has recently launched and is officially open for business. According to the agency, customers can use Bitcoin Tour to make flight bookings on Air Asia, Citilink and Lion Air as well as make hotel reservations at ‘almost all’ of the starred hotels in Indonesia. Bitcoin Tour was setup as part of Bali’s BitIslands initiative, which aims to turn Bali into a ‘bitcoin paradise’, where the digital currency is widely used and accepted by all local businesses. BitIslands’ project director Oscar Darmawan has said that even though Bitcoin Tour is less than two weeks old, demand for their service is high, with more than USD 10k in transactions having already been processed by the agency. The Bitislands project was launched in May this year and is sponsored by bitcoin.co.id, Indonesia’s largest bitcoin exchange and lobby group.

SCOOP The Seventh Bank Mandiri Canggu Classic Open Tennis Tournament Tennis fever will be soon hitting Bali as the registration for Canggu Club’s annual tennis tournament is now open. Aimed at encouraging all standards of players, the competition that is now in its seventh year, offering 15 different divisions ranging from Open, Super Amateur and Amateur to Junior. Held from September 13 to 21, this year’s tournament is presented by Bank Mandiri and offers a 30 million prize pool for the Open Division. All tournaments matches will be scheduled from 4pm until late on the weekdays and from 10am on the weekends, on all three undercover floodlit courts at Canggu Club West. All players will receive a complimentary t-shirt, ticket to the opening party and closing party, plus a chance to win division prizes and lucky draw prizes. Google Street View Available in Bali Google announced last week that its Street View feature in Goolge Maps is now working in Bali along with Jakarta, Bogor and Surabaya. Google Southeast Asian Product Manager Andrew McGlinchey said that Street View had about 90 percent coverage in the four provinces. The feature also covered some scenic tourist locations such rice fields in Bali and coral reefs in Komodo. Google Indonesia’s Country Director, Rudy Ramawy, said that the service would be expanded into more cities and that they would be adding more Street View cars. He said that the biggest challenge in mapping out Indonesia was the traffic, which makes it hard for the Street View cars to maintain a required constant speed. Hailing from Munich, Jerome Isma-Ae is one of the highest-selling, most successful progressive house DJ/producers of late. He has been a musician since he was in elementary school, after having been taught to play several musical instruments. At the age of 12, he played the bass in a metal band. When he turned 15 he started to program his first beats with a drum machine and released his first record on a German techno label called Delirium Records three years later. A year after his first release, he teamed up with Marcel Krieg and gave birth to the Future Funk project, bringing a successful combination of house, disco, soul and funk.

His remix of “Push the Feeling On” hit the top of US Billboard Dance Charts in 2002, as well as German Dance Charts in 2004. His dirty, hot remix of Guru Josh Project’s “Infinity 2008” was one of that year’s biggest Dance anthems, made it #1 in the UK Club Chart. The single also achieved gold status in Australia and Germany; peaked at #1 on the Dutch and French Singles Chart, and #3 on the UK Singles Chart. His inspirational releases such as “Rokit” and “Phantom” have graced the catalogues of every prominent label from Armada Music and Hope Records to Ministry of Sound. Jerome’s productions are a constant feature in the Beatport progressive house and trance charts. His “Underwater Love” was voted “Best Chill Out Track” for the Beatport Music Awards 2009. He collaborated with Ilan Bluestone for “Under My Skin” which topped the trance charts over the summer in 2013. Growing up in Philadelphia, John Creamer was influenced by classic rock from an early age, eventually being a trombone player in a garage-ska band. He arrived in New York in the early 90s and found his sound after his first encounter with the original Sound Factory. He gained immediate success afterward, taking on a managing position for legendary label Eightball Records and traveling the globe developing relationships with the most important minds in electronic music. In 2004, he started his own label NYLove where he utilizes his skills as a keen eye for undiscovered talent, as well as releasing his original work.

Their iconic remix on Kosheen’s “Hide U” entered the UK Top 10 at number 6, topped Billboard’s “Hot Dance Club Play” chart, and was titled as the “Remix of the Year” at the 2001 Muzik Awards. His other works on Iio’s classic anthem “Rapture” hit the second place on both UK singles chart and Billboard’s “Hot Dance Music/Club Play” chart. Justin Patti AKA Justin Pattiapon was born in the south side of Rotterdam back in January 1984. Justin’s love for music goes pretty far back, and at the age of six, (around the time he moved to the city of Spijkenisse), Justin really started to enjoy music. At the age 11 Patti started taking up drum lessons but unfortunately the man who owned the school passed away and he was forced to stop taking the lessons. A few years later, Justin, coming from one of the cities with the most love for techno, fell in love and made his first ever investment. He bought himself a nice pair of Pioneer speakers and a DJ-mixer.

This young aspiring DJ finally made it real when he started to produce his own music in late 2006 and switched up from underground progressive trance to a minimal-techno genre in 2009.

In 2012, he released the “Pitchglass” EP on Naughty Pills Records. The EP gained a huge response, earning a massive spot at minimal charts as well as marking one of the label’s top-selling EPs. His second release on the label, “Power Supply” consists of two pumping tracks with fat bass line, great percussion and a distorted vocal which made these tracks a real minimal hit. His latest production was the release Death and the Valley EP, containing the first single “This is My World”.

Compuphonic WOO BAR SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 7 Roots

It all started back in 2002 when the Belgian Maxime Firket was in his rehearsal room and practising his violin whilst discovering Daft Punk’s debut album. He had decided that he had enough of all the rock and wanted to learn the basics of electronic music. Maxime quickly found his way to success and it didn’t take much convincing to get Cosy Mozzy to sign his first productions on Dirty Dancing records. The owner of the so-called Brussels nightclub “Dirty Dancing” took this opportunity and hired him to be a resident DJ for his club. Compuphonic rapidly became one of the youngest DJs on the Brussels nightlife scene, which attracted a lot of other DJs that wanted to start remixing his work.

More recently the 25-year-old “groove maker” reached international status and confirmed his talent by getting in touch with the Canadian record label ‘Turbo Recordings’. Tiga (the owner of Turbo Recordings) actually decided to release Compuphonic’s “Emotion” EP on his own label and does not seem to regret it. Originally from a small countryside in Portugal, the Munich-based DJ and producer Luis Clara Gomes was surrounded by music and musicians during his childhood, and has been dedicated to the pursuit of eclecticism throughout his work. Musically self-taught, he shifted his priority from doing neurology and astronomy research to find a space for his worldwide touring and constant studio work. It was few years ago that this balance has finally changed, which saw him totally focus on his music under the moniker Moullinex. Together with his friends and work-partners Xinobi and Mr. Mitsuhirato, he gave birth to the Disco Texas imprint in 2006. In 2009, he was signed to Gomma Records, for which he has been recording a full-length album.

Remix requests for artists such as Cut Copy, Sebastien Tellier, and labels such as Kitsuné, Modular, Gomma and Compost have been pouring into his inbox ever since his first productions as Moullinex got out of the door. He released his debut album entitled Flora on Gomma Records in 2012, with his first single “Take My Pain Away” being acclaimed as one of the strongest from the album and has been reworked by Gigamesh, Rory Phillips, DJ Steef and Strip Steve. His single “Love Magnetic” is an infectious jam with him on vocals, also marking his first original material since Flora. In 2012, he worked in a collaboration with Peaches to create the modern version of 80s classic by Michael Sembello, “Maniac”. His notable albums include Break Chops (2008), Superman (2010), Chocolat (2011) and To Be Clear (2013).

When riding a motorbike: Do: If you’re new to riding a bike, wear a helmet. No one wants to see your head all split open in the middle of the street lying in a pool of your own blood. Bystanders will for, it’ll cause traffic, and think of the people that need to get you out of that mess. Don’t: Don’t make any sudden moves. For example, don’t turn right suddenly out of blue, as there may well be someone way too close coming up your rear. When at the warung: Do: Observe the types of food available before you get in line to order. It makes the process so much quicker. Don’t: Ask what every single item on the display rack is. It sucks for the people waiting in line behind you. And whatever happens, don’t be rude if you perceive slow service. Whether you know it or not, if you grew up in the West, you’ve been training your entire life on how to be a waiter (by going to restaurants). I lot of locals here have not. Just be respectful.

A cheeky tasting session last week revealed that the Tangy Ceviche (50k++) with corn, coriander, lime and jalapenos, and the stellar Seared Yellow Fin Tuna (140k++) with Asian slaw and crispy quail eggs are two of the top picks. With so many venues in town knocking out excellent breakfasts, it can be a tricky one to get right, but Philip has pulled together a superb selection of hot and cold favourites, aiming to target anyone who fancies something a bit more special than your average cooked brekky. The Standard Set Breakfast menu comes in at a meagre 100k++, and combines eggs your way, fruit, juice and the coffee of your choice, but if you really want to push the boat out check out ‘The Cure’ – poached eggs, bacon, mushrooms, chipolatas, hash brown, tomato and toasted rye bread (85k++ or 130k++ if you fancy washing it down with a House Bloody Mary or Sunrise cocktail).A mixture of tempting fruity iced teas are also on hand for maximum refreshment if you’re not a caffeine addict.

Currently on a bit of a health kick, I order up the House Granola (45k++), which comes layered in a glass jar with goji berries, vanilla bean yoghurt and custard apple granita, washed down with a delicious ‘green addicts’ mixed apple, celery and spinach juice (40k++). I feel pretty smug until my Brekky Buddy’s Baked Bad Boys (60k++) arrives,comprising of baked eggs, Swiss cheese, chorizo and white bean ragout on toasted rye bread. It’s an impressive stack and despite the top-notch granola I’m left thinking that being on a health kick might not the best plan for this morning after all. A sixteen-year-old cancer patient named Hazel narrates the movie as she goes through the story of how she met the love of her life Augustus. It starts off with the story of two teenagers who share an acerbic wit. Their relationship is miraculous, given that hazel’s constant companion is her oxygen tank. Augustus is an ex basketball super star that had a fatal accident which caused his leg to be amputated. The teens meet at and fall in love at a cancer support group.

After a career spanning over 40 years that has produced some 15 albums, most musicians would be pretty content to sit back and let the royalty cheques keep rolling in. Not Tom Petty though, who seems to have rediscovered his form after the middling blues-rock of 2010’s Mojo.

While admittedly there are a couple of flops - “Fault Lines”, despite its uptempo urgency sounds a wee bit outdated, and there’s the odd clunky lyric to be found; “meet me tonight/on the red river/where the water is clear and cold” (err, wouldn’t it be red, Tom?), there is much to enjoy from Hypnotic Eye.

Can Carry” – perhaps the two album tracks that come closest to Petty’s former glories.

Teaming up once again with his long time backing group The Heartbreakers and recording at the band’s LA rehearsal space, Petty has delivered a solid collection of tunes that have a more raw, in-the-studio vibe. Stylistically there’s nothing new or particularly inventive, and overall the album lacks any of the kind of standout hits (“Learning to Fly”, “American Girl” to name just a couple) that made Petty’s reputation in the 80s and 90s.

Now 63, Petty’s reedy voice has changed little over the years, and aside from Dylan is still one of the most assured and recognizable whines in music. It might not be pretty but it oozes authenticity, especially on opener “American Plan B”, where Petty confides to us that, “like a fool, I’m bettin’ on happiness”. Particular highlights are the jazz shuffle and lilting guitars of “Full Grown Boy”, and the freewheeling standouts “U Get Me High” and “All You

Worthless Worm Fodder

Despite its faults, there is enough here to keep everything feeling fresh and new, thanks largely to the reliability of The Heartbreakers – Mike Campbell’s riffs still sound as crisp as they did on 1985’s Southern Accents, and Ron Blair’s bass keeps everything moving purposefully along. The upshot is that with the Heartbreakers on this kind of form, it’s brought out the best in the boss too. While it may be unlikely that Hypnotic Eye will win over a new generation of fans with its classic rock stylings, Petty devotees will delight in the fact that he’s back to doing what he does best. Based on an awareness of the needs for plastic waste management, the local artist Made Bayak presents a series of art projects themed “Plasticology” which is currently exhibited at the gallery at Bloo Lagoon Village. With the realization that plastic waste is a critical problem as his point of departure, the artist utilizes plastic waste generated by his own family to create works of art including painting collages and installation pieces. Related to the issues caused by the waste that affects Bali’s environment, the artist also cynically constructs ‘new propaganda’ through his visual works, which is principally meant to rebuild the image of exotic Bali from plastic debris. Pande Wayan Suputra Pande Wayan Suputra was raised to love arts. Born in Gianyar, he came from a village with many talented artists pushing the youngsters to follow their ways and keep their legacy. He grew up with the love for sketching and drawing. His passion ran deeper, specializing in painting when he studied at Institute of Arts Indonesia. From a hobby to a profession, he has finally lived up to his childhood dream, to become an artist and live from it. His art is described as a kind of romantic expressionism. A huge fan of Van Gogh, he gets his inspiration from this adoration, putting it distinctively in a Balinese way. Using some oil paints and a spatula, he puts textures on his canvas and enjoys thickness and raw colors which he sees as a perfect combination to put a ‘soul’ in what he paints.

Balinese customs, tradition, culture and religion is the essence of his art. He expresses his origin, village, heritage and the values that are inherited by his ancestors. He doesn’t only stay there, he explores around. He opens his mind about the surrounding and neighboring cultures as it allows him to discover a new horizon of arts. His art is a medium to express what he has in mind and is an expression he wishes to share with others, in an artistic way for everyone to understand and appreciate. We tried the Foot Massage and their signature Shine Massage which paired nicely together. The foot massage came in both 30 (200k) and 60 (320k) minute options and the treatment room offered an excellent views. The massage was slow and deliberate with the view offering the welcome distraction of people watching at the Sheratonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pool area. The Shine Massage was also a very relaxing affair and was in a private massage room that was dimly lit. The ambience was comforting with near perfect temperature

The layout of the spa next to the pool and gym is unique and was nicely incorporated in the space at the Sheraton.
