In this digital age where everything is made to formula, perfectly balanced to create the greatest moment, offering the greatest reach, and being so downright predictable, it’s great to see (and also great for Bali to see) a bunch of people doing something for the pleasure or for the passion, like The Junction Festival crew do. They started 10 years ago when Bali was a different place with not so much going on and have stuck to their guns of bringing top house music and house DJs from around the world to our shores every year (almost) since. Back then in 2004 it was a response to all the vocal trance music being played and Anton Wirjono, his brother Hogi and another house enthusiast, Frenchman Gian-Luigi decided to take things in the own hands and bring house music back onto the main stage. Nowadays I suppose they would be doing it in response to all this banging EDM stuff we have in the clubs and festivals, but one thing is for sure, we should all feel indebted to these fellas and the tireless crew that put The Junction together every year. *bow-bow* Awesome stuff, dudes. Meanwhile the party goes on. It looks like we’ve moved off the peak season as the huge numbers of August have backed off, but the high season continues as September brings us more international acts and plenty of shows to get excited about. And there are still plenty of people on the way for this month and next. Check inside for all the details. We also have a poignant interview with Jerinx from local band Superman is Dead and the crew from ForBali, an environmental group bent on preserving Bali as we know it. It’s food for thought, comment online if you have something to say.

SCOOP Bye-bye Plastic Bag Visited Bali Airport Bye-bye Plastic Bags is a social initiative driven by local and international children living in Bali who are volunteering to make Bali plastic bag free. Not only going online, the kids also get involved in many positive activities, including this one they did on August 21 going to Bali airport and meeting Ramdan Pradarma from PT. Angkasa Pura I. After getting the final permission and confirmation, the kids were then allowed to go inside the airport to spread their cause. And with the full support from Ramdan and all airports elements, ByeBye Plastic Bag will continue working on this activity by sending seven to ten volunteers to the airport, once or twice a week (up on November), bringing one pen and one petition board per person to get as many signatures as they can, from Gate 1 to 10 in the international departure. Most DJs fall into the club-life by accident due to their love for music. Not David Seaman. He decided he was going to be a DJ by the time he was eight years old and played his first gig at 12. Born and bred in Leeds, David famously won his first career break in a competition and ended up being invited to be a member of the groundbreaking organization DMC when he won a trip to the New Music Seminar at the world leading music conference in New York. This is where Dave got in contact with some of the industry’s bigwigs, hot shots and most importantly the people at Mixmag. Dave ended up getting offered a job at Mixmag and one year later was the editor.

What Seaman really wanted was to be the biggest DJ in the world. His blind ambition isn’t what got him to the top, it was his ear for melody and the untold passion he had for music. And it was in the studio – alongside his partner in his record label ‘Brothers in Rhythm’, Steve Anderson – that his ear for melody found its natural home. One of their first forays into recording gave birth to a track that Good Time records found impossible to ignore; ‘Such a Good Feeling’ set the charts and dance floors on fire. Brothers in Rhythm started remixing for the great and the good all throughout the nineties. Then other artists asked them to produce and write for them too. U2, New Order, David Bowie, Kylie, Take That and so many more were waiting in line for Dave to give them some inspiration.

The electronic dance music scene has been growing at an exponential pace throughout the whole world, but even more so in the United States. There are two young lads that have been making a name for themselves since 2010 and have managed to catch the attention of people all around the world, they are Paris and Simo. The two 22-year-olds were born and raised in Montreal, Canada under a strong European influence. Having participated, and more importantly, won local DJ competitions, Paris and Simo were able to adapt to any crowd or dance floor. It was only a matter of time before the talented up and comers were to begin producing their own tracks and making it big in the industry.

After countless hours in the studio, all the hard work started to pay off. The Paris FZ & Simo T remix of “I Ain’t Stoppin” along side fellow friend and producer Pierce Fulton made its way to the Beatport top 100 and got to #26 within the first week of the release. Then in 2011, Hardwell was quick to sign their original track ‘Monk’ to Revealed Recordings, and Tiesto shortly after followed his lead by choosing their remix of his single “Work Hard Play Hard” to be an official release on his label, Musical Freedom. To top off their year in 2011, “Aura” which was a collaboration with Mark Mendes reached #13 on the Beatport progressive house charts via his label Starter Records.

Hailing from Sydney, the DJ Lady Lauryn AKA Lauryn Winter is known for her outstanding stage performance combining her vocals and rapping with energetic tunes throughout. In an interview, she stated that she was always musical since she was baby. She became a professional MC in 2007, playing at major clubs and venues since then. Electro house and dance music group, The Potbelleez, was formed in 2003 by Irish duo, David Greene AKA Dave Goode and Jonathan Murphy AKA Johny Sonic. It was while working in Sydney in 2005 the duo met Blue MC AKA Marisa Lock who just returned from London. They soon became a trio, and began playing live in 2006 where they were later joined by Ilan Kidron AKA iKid on vocals. During the same year, the quartet started to record their tracks in a terrace house in Darlinghurst, and was signed to Vicious Records label in the end of the year. In 2012, it was announced on their social media accounts that MC Blue had departed to pursue a solo project, while the group still remains a trio.

In 2007, they issued their single “Don’t Hold Back” which placed #36 in its first week on the ARIA Single Charts. This single was finally certified double platinum by ARIA with shipment of over 140,000 copies. Still in the same year, the group performed at the Irish arts and music festival, Electric Picnic. Their music has also been featured on numerous TV shows including Blood, Sweat and Gears, Crunch, So You Think You Can Dance and Australia’s Next Top Model. Their tracks “Junkyard” and “Duuurty Dreemz” unofficially became the theme tune for Channel Ten’s Big Brother Up-Late show.

Sonny Fodera is truly a man of the world; hailing from Australia, living in Ibiza and signed to a US label. He grew up with a really random musical influences, from Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn, to Jurassic 5, A Tribe Called Quest and even Blink 182. A guitarist, he started his musical journey having played in a lot of bands throughout his teenage years. At the age of 16, he got into hip-hop but put out tracks when he was 21. The Virgin began by chance in 2008 when Ahmad Dhani, the lead vocalist and front man of the Indonesian band Dewa 19, accidentally overheard the raw version of Cameria Happy Pramita’s (Mitha) song, “Cinta Terlarang” (Forbidden Love). He was instantly captivated by the song and decided that he wanted to produce it. Dhani, who was also a judge on the hit reality TV show Mamma Mia, saw great talent in one of the contestants; Dara Rizki Ruhiana (Dara). He then publicly promised her a recording deal if she failed to win the show itself. True to his word, when Dara was unsuccessful, he acquainted her with Mitha and together the two formed The Virgin.

This powerful duo is hard to miss and has become one of Indonesia’s best-loved icons. Their work has been well received and as such The Virgin has been winning at least 2 music awards each year since 2009. Their first two were both INBOX AWARDS and were the, “Pendatang Baru Yang Paling Direquest” award (The Most Requested Newcomers) and the “Video Klip Nomor Satu Terlama” award (The Longest Music Video Clip to Top the Charts). Mitha has also been the receiver of the SCTV’s Best Guitarist award twice. Needless to say, The Virgin has not lost it’s stride and has been able to maintain it’s strong position in the music industry. The duo’s music also has been used in a number of Indonesian films such as Cinta ½ Mati (Loving till Death) and Demi Nama Cinta (In the Name of Love). They also released their first album titled Yes I Am which was released on 2011. Their latest album, Positive, Negative, was released this year.

Is Reklamasi the Fork in the Road?

The biggest tourism development in Bali since Nusa Dua or Pecatu appears to be pushing through the local government with little heed to studies last year stating that there will be a negative impact to the environment of Benoa Bay if the project goes ahead and being completely contrary to a hotel moratorium drawn up some five years ago by the Bali provincial government. Some people are for the development and others ardently against it. An activist group is gearing up to fight for the rights of local people and are trying to raise much needed funds to do it. The Beat asked a member of the collective, I Gede Ary Astina, better known as Jerinx, what it was all about.

Who and what is the group? We are ForBALI (Forum Rakyat Bali Tolak Reklamasi Teluk Benoa) - a coalition of Balinese citizens, social and environmental groups in Bali that are concerned about the future of the Benoa Bay, Bali. We believe that the reclamation of Benoa Bay is a step towards the destruction of Bali. We have been struggling for two years to pressure the government to cancel the plan. The reclamation of Benoa Bay will cause flooding as it destroys the natural reservoir of five major rivers in Bali. The designation of this private-luxurious property for a new tourism landmark will also be a threat to the

people who live nearby, and moreover to the economic situation in Bali which is already fragile, as it almost completely depends on mass-scale tourism that works like a time bomb; creating a greater destruction of Bali, its resources and nature. The reclamation of Benoa Bay will do more harm than good to this island and its people. What do you need the money for? We are currently collecting donations to fund a national action. We need to - once again - bring this issue to the national and international level. Just like how Bali always belongs to the world, and has been consumed/

enjoyed by people from all over the world. More attention and support from people and media all over the world will give more pressure to the government, especially the new president-elect, Joko Widodo to cancel Presidential Regulation 51/2014 that permits this plan. And also, let’s not forget there are ‘top players’ behind this reclamation plan, and they’ve been using all the money/power/ access they have to get what they want; paying thugs to destroy our Tolak Reklamasi banners, paying Telkomsel to blast their advertising on SMS (Telkomsel later stopped the blast after we called them out on socialmedia), buying ads on Youtube, buying advertorial news on news portals, paying national TV to air a ‘distorted’ documentary about Benoa Bay reclamation, etc. The point is, who we’re dealing with are some serious high power entities in this country. Yet, all we (ForBALI and the people who are against the reclamation) have is love and faith. No elites, no political party, nothing supporting us financially. This is truly people power.

Bali Ministry of Marine and Fisheries stating the possibility of massive floods caused by this reclamation plan. We have already seen how the needs of local/indigenous people are sacrificed in the name of tourism. Pak Rebho whose house is now surrounded by golf fields in Pecatu. Even clean water for the people who live around GWK is a 16 year old-empty promise from the developer. We have had enough.

How about other areas in Bali’s development, do you think the Benoa Bay is the test case for the future of this island and everyone should be concerned about the outcome? There is no more test cases. We have already seen how the reclamation of Serangan Island changed the tidal movements and caused errosion along the east coast of Bali. A group of scientists has also published a study for the

After projects like Nusa Dua and Pecatu went ahead with little heed of what the people wanted, do you realistically believe anything will change the direction of this project? Yes. Putting more pressure on the government through media exposure will help. Challenge them to start a new brighter period, show us what they called a mental revolution. And after Bali giving so much happiness to the tourists from all around the world, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t you think Bali deserves some help? And Yes it is very bad. It will heighten the inequality of the economic situation of the people of Bali. It will widen the gap between the rich and the poor, as the tourism cake is

Despite the existence of luxurious tourism facilities and 2000 USD/ night hotel rooms, the poverty in Bali is still everywhere to be seen and very little is done by the government. If they changed the development - less reclamation or moved it somewhere would it be acceptable? We are speaking about reclamation with a purpose of making new land. And Indonesia has 17,000 islands. Development, access to health care and education is not dispersed well among even the major islands. Why would we need more land? So the question is not whether it is acceptable or not, but whether we need it or not. And i believe we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t.

ull of the kind of charm that is fast disappearing from the ‘new Bali’, Kori is a cosy reminder of the kind of Kuta restaurant that I remember from my first trips to Bali well over a decade ago. In fact, Kori opened way back in 1998 when there were still a few coconut groves separating Kuta and Legian, and has been a firm favourite for legions of guests ever since. Located on busy Poppies Lane 2, the restaurant is made up of the newly expanded bar area, with a series of differing dining spaces tapering off toward the rear garden. Step through the traditional Balinese style gateway (kori) and settle into the laid back colonial style ambience. Comfy wicker chairs and antique furnishings compliment the airy white interior and tastefully old-fashioned décor. Around the edges, numerous koi fish swim lazily in ponds fed by gently trickling fountains while classic

FOOD jazz spills quietly from the speakers – it really is a little oasis of tranquility amidst the bustle of Kuta. Although it’s been a very long time since I last visited Kori, the welcoming smiles of the staff and nostalgic familiarity of an ‘old school’ Bali eatery instantly grasps me. A friend and I pull up a couple of chairs opposite the bar and quickly order up a couple of jumbo ice lemon teas (30k++) happy to be enjoying the somewhat historic vibe. Balinese Manager Pak Jaya has been running the show here for an incredible 16 years, and Head Chef Pak Mayun started work here when it opened. As a result of that experience, the menu is an excellent mix of Western and Indonesian classic dishes that has been honed so there is something to suit everyone. Opting to stick with the chef’s special menu (the selection changing roughly every month), we get stuck right into a plate of the delicious Steamed Stuffed Squid (45k++), that incorporates a wonderfully light fish and prawn mousse with zucchini salad drizzled with orange and ginger dressing. It’s a perfectly simple, perfectly satisfying appetizer, and gets the thumbs up all round. For the main, I tuck into the enormous Grilled Pork Chop (165k++) served with rosti potatoes, sautéed spinach and a mushroom sauce. Meanwhile, my friend orders up the beautifully tender Pan-Fried Dory Fillet (98k++), which comes with sautéed potatoes, tossed salad and lemon garlic butter. Duly stuffed, we skip dessert and head straight for the cocktails– specifically a glass of the Kori Sangria (73k++) and a 7 Star (70k++), the latter from Kori’s new cocktail specials menu, where it’s three for two during the afternoon happy hour. Open from 12pm-12am for lunch and dinner, Kori also offers an early bird dinner between 3-7pm, and VIP cards to regular customers, both promotions giving a 10% discount on food. Royal Blood

Some time ago now the online portal Pitchfork released a review of a new Jet album, which, I believe I’m right in saying is probably the greatest review of an album in history. For anyone that missed it, the given score was zero and there were no words. Instead was simply an embedded YouTube clip of a monkey urinating into it’s own mouth. Crude, yes, but in highlighting the fact that the Melbourne four piece were a thoroughly unoriginal bunch of mop-haired mannequins regurgitating, sorry, trying to regurgitate a bunch of classic rock, it was hilariously apt. So when two pasty blokes from Brighton release an album that appears to be doing a similar thing – in this case sounding like Jack White fronting Queens of the Stone Age, there’s bound to be a bit of cynicism. Is Royal Blood just a soulless reproduction of the two bands? Far from it. In actual fact the effect

is something similar to what Sydney’s Wolfmother achieved with their 2004 debut – rather than trying to emulate their influences, they became them – delivering perhaps the greatest Black Sabbath album that Black Sabbath never recorded. The same is true here - yes bassist Ben Thatcher and drummer Mike Kerr are ‘doing’ Queens of the Stone Age, Jack White, and to some extent Muse, but arguably they’re doing it better than all of them put together. If you’re not convinced, listen to the bombastic “Come on Over” with it’s fuzz bass thump or “You Can Be So Cruel” – you can imagine Josh Homme hearing these tracks, scratching his head and wondering aloud “is this me?”

(“Figure it Out”, “Blood Hands”, “Ten Tonne Skeleton”) the pair’s no nonsense riffery really takes off.

At the heart of the Royal Blood engine room, Kerr’s bass (restrung with guitar strings) and Thatcher’s bombastic drums meld together in a dynamic blend of raw power that never dips below exhilarating. Even on the lesser tracks the approach is effective, but on the standouts

Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

Making an album like this would be no mean feat, even for a band that had been in the game for years, but Royal Blood only formed last year and the pair are barely into their twenties, which makes this debut all the more impressive. There’s a confidence in every aspect of the music and attitude that takes hold almost immediately and doesn’t let up the whole way through. The songs are taut, muscular affairs with all the fat trimmed off - so much so that very few even hit the four minute mark, meaning the album careens along at breakneck pace. Throw in a string of high profile festival slots and a sprinkling of celebrity fans like Jimmy Page and Alex Turner, and it’s easy to see why Royal Blood have already become one of the years breakthrough acts – expect to hear much more from these guys. Tucked away to one side of the massive lobby at The Stones on Jl. Pantai Kuta, Celestine Spa is a cozy little nook in the grandiose hotel. Earthly accents give the spa a very cozy feel and the gentle use of light is a welcomed segue into the spa experience that Celestine has to offer. As you walk to your treatment room, the hallway is lined with scented oil burners that emit a soothing aroma which serves as a great introduction to your massage. The therapy room has a warm feel with its own shower facilities and peripherals which mean you don’t have to fuss with a separate locker and bathroom.

We chose their signature Stone Art Movement treatment which can either be 60 or 90 minutes depending on how deep into the rabbit hole you want to go. It all started with the obligatory foot wash before things got really interesting. The therapist used long strokes across the four corners of the body both front and back which had us in a different dimension. The use of heated basalt rocks pressed firmly against lubricated skin gave a very visceral feel to the massage. Basalt is basically rapidly cooled lava which gives it a nice density, combine that with rolling down a river for who knows how long and you have the perfect massage rock. Celestine’s stones are further polished to a silky smooth finish which

really imparts the heat of the rocks into the oil medium. After the massage, we received the Celestine Facial with Jade Stone which was a nice end to the experience. The treatment focused on the upper body with acupressure points in around the shoulder, neck, head and face being worked on. At the end of the facial, a chilled jade stone on a roller was smoothly rolled on the face which felt rather nice.

Ingredients:

The oil used for the massage was an in house mix by Celestine called Serenity Oil and consisted of a grape seed base along with lavender, bergamot, and vetivert essentials. The facial used all local products and a white clay mask which was very soothing to the skin.

Magic:

Celestine’s attention to minute details was a welcome experience. The therapist instinctively found a knot on the back of my shoulder and went off script to spend a little extra time working it out which was pretty considerate. Another nice touch was the seedless dates served with the obligatory ginger tea to cap off the spa experience.

t was a picture perfect Sunday at Halfways, Kuta Beach for the third event of the Billabong and Surfer Girl Grommet Attack series, with bright sunshine and consistent 2-3 foot glassy waves offering up the ideal conditions for the nearly 100 strong contingent of groms ranging from 6 - 16 years old. But although this event is all about the groms getting together and having a blast on the beach with their friends, there is also the element of competition and so there are winners. Rio Waida, who just returned from competing in Japan, took out the highly competitive Under 16 Boys Division. “I started out in the finals feeling very confident, but for the first 15 minutes I couldn’t even catch a wave. Luckily, two good ones came my way with just a few minutes to go and I got the scores I needed.” Raju Sena is the current rankings leader and finished in third spot. Billabong team rider Kian Martin added a second consecutive win to his already impressive competition record in the Under 12 Boys, putting himself into a head-to-head battle with Kuta Beach local Dhani Widianto for the overall championship in the final event. Dhani is just 350 points ahead, so it will be a dramatic final down the home stretch.

The Under 16 Girls win was taken by Australia’s Kiani Dobbyn, a Billabong team rider from Queensland Australia. “I’ve competed against Cinta and Dhea before and it’s not easy to beat them. I’m so glad I can take this trophy home and show my sponsor,” she said with a huge smile. Dhea is the current points leader with Cinta 1,350 points behind in second spot. The exciting and highly entertaining Pushing Division was definitely a crowd favorite, with heaps of claps and cheers for the micro groms out attacking the waves with varying levels of seriousness and good humor. At the end of the day, it was tiny Kai Steenburgen taking the win off his bigger cousin Adrian, last event’s winner. “It’s so great to see how high the level of surfing is with this generation of young groms, and how much it has improved in a short time. I hope to see this continue and more surfing brands jumping in doing similar events,” ASC Head Judge Wayan Pica who presided over the judging panel said after the event.
