We just had one of the longest dry seasons in living memory which went on since June (or so it felt) and now we are into the big rain. And isn’t it suddenly cold? Brrrrrrr. Maybe not so cold for visiting tourists, but for people living here, this drop in temperature has us running for our proverbial woolies. But it’s all good ‘cause we have the festive season coming soon and we needed the rain anyway so all that’s sure to brighten up your world. And didn’t that festive season come around fast? I won’t go on about how fast this year went, I think I will just leave that till next week, but we are now in the last weeks of the year. With the festive season come all the visitors and tourists from all over the world and country. Bring it on, and you can read more about that too in the next edition. This edition we have a chat with some men from the Australian consulate trying to build awareness about men’s health and in particular mental health, which can affect anyone, but as they say, men are more likely not to talk about it. So it’s time to talk it up, lads. There’s plenty of Schoolies action inside too. There are lots of shows on in the build up to Christmas. A couple of wild cards that could be worth a look are Boyce Avenue with their excellent harmonies at Hard Rock Cafe on Wednesday December 11 and then Matthew Koma, who is an artist on the rise after releasing rock/pop tracks of his own previously, a huge track with Jedd called Spectrum that was number one on the Billboard 100 Dance Chart for two weeks, and this year he made tracks with Hardwell, Audien and Showtek. There are also some massive DJs on the way all over town too. Check inside and have a close look at the Mainstage to find out more and we’ll see you just before the Christmas and New Year’s rush. Aldrin Quek is the most internationally prominent Asian DJ hailing from Singapore. His musical career actually started when he was 14 when he began fiddling with the music equipment his brother stored at their home, learning how to play the turntables by himself. His professional DJ career began in 1996; five years after he flew around the world as a flight attendant for Singapore Airlines. It was one lucky night when his friend got him a desirable slot to play at Zouk, which landed him on a job offer right after the set. He had been Zouk’s musical ambassador for over a decade, but left the famous Singapore’s club in 2007 to focus on his music production. He now runs his own digital label One With Music which he started back in 2008.

Aldrin was the only Asian to be featured as “DJ of the Month”, and was named “A Contender for Best New DJ” on UK’s dance magazine Muzik in 2000. In 2002, he became the first Asian DJ to be on the cover of Muzik with credit for mixing the magazine’s “most on-form CD”. He has spread his vibes, playing at gigs all over Asia, Europe and North America, as well as at distinguished clubs including London’s Ministry of Sound, Ibiza’s Pacha, New York’s Ceilo, Tokyo’s Womb and Seoul’s Ellui. He was referred to as “Asia’s Number One DJ to Catch in Ibiza” by Muzik, and was also nominated for “Best New Comer” at the Ibiza DJ Awards in 2004.

Aldrin’s debut production “Lettitle’s Dream” was featured on Digweed’s playlist for his show played on 98.5FM. His remix on “Love in New Wave” by Singapore rock band Electrico was championed by Pete Tong, receiving a lot of airplay on his BBC Radio One show. His other releases include Bene, Singapore Tribal and Thinking Out Loud Asia.

The Revenge AKA Graeme Clark began producing ever since his early teenage years. Using a couple of his dad’s old drum machines and a sampler, he started the process of reimagining and making mixes. As a means to get some of these productions out, he set up label Five20East in 1999 with brothers Scott and Ross Langley. He moved to Glasgow from his hometown on the east coast in 2002, where he continued playing more sets as well as editing some of his favorite records.

His 20-year career has been under many aliases through his numerous projects. His collaborative works with Sub Club’s Harri and Soul Heaven’s Craig Smith have found homes on some labels including Nordic Trax, Jisco Music and Deep Freeze. He also has joined his friend Paul McGlashan in their electronic band Deportivo Street Team, playing a fusion of house and techno. His residency at Glasgow’s Ivy sees him running the monthly OOFT! in which he works with his fellow DJ and producer Ali Herron. His other collaborative projects currently include Cronk Family Enterprises, 6th Borough Project and The Hong Kong Micros.

NOTABLE TRACKS

In 2011, he dropped an album titled Reekin’structions on Joey Negro’s Z Records, which features funk and Italo-style disco re-edits. The re-edits in this album include Mid-Air’s “Ease Out”, Johnny Adams’ “Feel the Beat” and Velvet Hammer’s “Party Down”. One of his most recent works is “Los Angeles Times” with house and disco sounds well-harmonized in a way that brings the best out in both. His other remixes include Jaffa Surfa’s “Disko Z”, Daniel Solar’s “A Walk on the Dark” and Ribn’s “No Place”.

Boyce Avenue is a Florida-based band consisting of three brothers Alejandro, Fabian, and Daniel Manzano. Known for its strong acoustic roots and melodic rock sound, they first came together as a band in 2004 after Daniel graduated from Harvard Law School and moved back to their hometown to join his brothers Fabian and Alejandro who were both attending classes at the University of Florida. Since then, they have been actively writing music as well as performing at local shows.

Boyce Avenue opened the European MTV Video Awards show in 2011 by appearing in front of over 20,000 fans in a square in Belfast, Northern Ireland where their performance was very well-received. In 2012, they worked as vocal coaches on the American version of The X Factor.

NOTABLE TRACKS

The band started filming and posting videos on YouTube in 2007. Some of their first few videos included the acoustic versions of Justin Timberlake’s “Love Stoned”, Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida”. In 2009, their single “Hear Me Now” was featured by WWE in a video tribute to Eddie Guerrero on the decade of Smack Down show. The band signed with Universal Republic in 2010 and had their second studio album titled All We Have Left, containing reworked songs from their first album All You’re Meant to Be as well as the first single “Every Breath”. In 2012, Boyce Avenue released the official video for their song “Broken Angel” as a worldwide debut through Q Magazine and YouTube. The band’s EP, No Limits was released this year, containing more upbeat pop tracks than their previous work.

Born as Jeffrey Allan Townes in Philadelphia in 1965, Jazzy Jeff’s DJ work started at the ripe age of 10. He started off in his families’ basement but it wasn’t long before he was actually playing at local clubs, where he became known as the “bathroom DJ” – only taking over the decks when the house DJ was on a bathroom break. But it was in this setting where he learnt and found out what he wanted to be doing – along the way Jeff became one of the pioneers of the “transformer” scratch (which uses a fader to cut the sounds in and out quickly) and the ‘chirp’ scratch (which makes the turntable make birdlike sounds) and can be heard on the 1998 record Will Smith laid out called “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It”. Jeff and Will Smith formed a duo called Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince. They ended up selling millions of records and became the first rap act to win a Grammy.

In 1990, Jeff fulfilled his longtime dream of creating a record label and started A Touch of Jazz, in his hometown of Philly. ATOJ is also a full-scale, musical production facility that has housed many talents and helped create the right environment and is now renowned and revered as the place to create music. Jazzy Jeff has also had various musical credits to his name including the theme to The Fresh Prince of Bel Air (where he also played the role of Will’s friend Jazz), a couple of songs on ‘The Simpsons’ and the theme to the ‘UPN Network’s – Between Brothers’. ATOJ also produced songs for movie soundtracks in movies such as Wild Wild West, Love Jones, The Wood and Too Deep.

His most notable tracks were in 1991’s Homebase, which went on to platinum status and earned the duo’s second Grammy Award, for the smash single “Summertime,” which reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Since parting ways with his partner (Will Smith), Jeff has worked with huge talents such as KRS- one, Kenny Lattimore, Jill Scott, J-Live and King Britt’s. In 2002, he put together a sweet diverse solo album for BBE called Magnificent. Two years later his first ever DJ mix Hip Hop Forever Vol.2 was released.’ The Return of Magnificent, featuring another all-star support cast, came out in 2007.

Nick Monaco began his career as a DJ/producer at the tender age of 13, scratching his dad’s priceless Queen records. He quickly immersed himself in the hip-hop culture and started studying vigorously on the old school ways of DJing. As soon as he turned 15, he got his hands on a Roland keyboard and began making hip-hop and R&B beats. As a freshman in high school, Monaco was later obsessed with the turntables and anything with the words ‘hip-hop’ in it. Rocking house parties later became what Monaco would do every weekend in his not so distant adolescence. It was those renegade house parties where he really learned to rock the socks off a crowd.

Making links with the ‘Dirtybird’ crew initially and later, Soul Clap, helped to push Nick’s Career forward. Damian got his major DJing break in 2002 when he was invited to spin at Barcelona’s Sonar Festival and by 2003 he had residencies at some of the best clubs around. His gigs at Circo Loco (DC10 Ibiza) gave him the ranking of a legend and after that he found himself breaking boundaries of sound and stamina, freaking out the dance floor and taking those on it to places they never knew existed, and may never get to again. Way later in 2008, Damian began Lazpod, a monthly excursion into weird and wonderful sound, a radio show that draws influence from all the corners of the musical spectrum. With many thousands of fans across the globe, Damian uses the show to let listeners in a little closer to his experimental tastes.

Damian was at the forefront of the U.K. dance music scene throughout the 2000s. Being head of A&R of the City Rockers label, he was behind the releases of massive tracks such as Felix da Housecat and Miss Kittin’s ‘Silver Screen Shower Scene’ and Tiga & Zyntherius’s “Sunglasses at Night.” He selected both volumes of the Futurism Compilations in 2004, which exemplified the era’s electro-indebted house and techno. Lazarus also put together dozens of CR mixes like Rebel Futurism Session One and Session Two as well as Crosstown Rebels Vol. 1. Damian also released a huge album in 2009 called Smoke the Monster Out which incorporated oldschool techno, classicist house, dubstep, and even ‘80s synth funk.

What DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) do you use and what made you decide it was the best one for you ? We work in Ableton, and we enjoy the speed of the workflow. Any of the major DAWs are all great to work with, and at the end of the day it’s just a matter of preference. How do you guys deal with ‘hitting a brick wall’ whilst producing? If we really can’t progress on an idea or a track, which happens occasionally, we work on other tracks and ideas, and come back to it later. Or sometimes it helps to let the track rest for a couple of months and come back to it then.

You guys only started producing in 2011, what were your biggest inspirations at the beginning? What made you want to become electronic dance music producers? We always had a strong drive to remix existing songs, and we decided to really work on it in 2012. Our biggest inspirations in the beginning were guys like Eric Prydz and Axwell who we have been listening to for years. Can you briefly describe to us how you two start a musical project? What are the first few steps? Every track starts in a different way, but usually we start with a chord progression or a catchy melody and bassline. Then we go back and forth over the best arrangement and once we have the idea in place, it’s a matter of making the idea reality.

What’s one song that you know makes the crowd dance like no other? Our track ‘United We Dance’ is always effective on the dance floor! How has your music evolved in the last 12 months? Our music has become more varied sound wise and we’re always experimenting with new styles as well. You can expect a lot of new fresh music from us next year! Which clubs/festivals have given you the most energy and joy to play at? Ultra Music Festivals all over the world are always a joy to play. Have you been to bali before? What are you expecting? Men’s Health and Fighting Depression The

These men are here to help you, mo or no mo!

Australian Consulate-General in Bali does not have a looming presence amongst the Bali expat community, basically taking care of visas and such, but one thing not many people are aware of is the work they do behind the scenes helping the increasing number of Aussies who suffer from depression and mental health issues.

Australians aged 16-85 will experience a mental illness in any given year, and almost half of all Australians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime.” And also that, “every day, at least six Australians die from suicide and a further thirty attempt to take their own life. Worse, that the group most at risk, young men, is also the group least likely to seek help.”

Driven by their own personal experiences with friends and family, as well as through their interactions with Australians here in Bali who need a helping hand, a group of men from the consulate have banded together to embark upon an awareness raising mission about men’s health.

“We have some really amazing organisations in Australia like Beyond Blue and Lifeline that do good work. I want to ensure that Aussies and all men living here know that living in Bali doesn’t mean you’re cut off from these services, and to reach out to them if you need help or if you’re worried about someone else.”

Red-headed Australian Consul Tom Walter and his mates were taking the art of the humble moustache very seriously by sporting a mo for the 30 days of Movember (as with many men around the globe) to spark conversation and raise funds for men’s health. Speaking with the man behind the mo about why he got involved, Tom answered, “because too many good men die young for no good reason, and if they’d got help earlier many would never have met such a tragic end.” Tom also told The Beat he wants to get the word out to Bali-based expatriates that even though you’re not in their home country and things can sometimes seem hard, help is always near at hand. Tom stated some statistics that were pretty concerning, noting that according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics: “one in five

Movida Comes to Bali Celebrity chef Frank Comorra is scheduled to open a Movida restaurant in Seminyak in June next year according to reports. Movida is a restaurant chain that has outlets in both Melbourne and Sydney. The new restaurant is a partnership between Camorra and Potato Head and will be part of a high end hotel in Seminyak. “It’s going to be a Movida food offering but the look will be different to account for the climate,” said Camorra. Chef Jimmy Parker is set to run the new restaurant and has previously worked three years in the kitchens of Movida Next Door.

FOOD Considering how long I’ve been penning food reviews I was surprised to find that as yet I’ve not covered any Mexican establishments in my gastronomic jaunts around this mad little island. Ordinarily that wouldn’t be much to shout about (unless of course we were actually in Mexico), but going by the absolute explosion in the number of Mexican joints in Bali over the last few years it is actually quite remarkable. On this occasion I bypassed the epicenter of Mexican-ness that is Seminyak and hightailed it down to Tuban to check out the new Hacienda Mexican Bar & Taqueria opposite Discovery Mall. First appearances reveal a large outside decking area overlooking the road, with high-top tables and saloon stools dotted around for the casual Tijuana roadhouse look. Stepping inside, the cavernous air conditioned interior is plastered in brightly coloured murals depicting contemporary Mexican-inspired artwork – Día de Muertos, Catholic mysticism and a healthy splash of skulls in all shapes and sizes mean there is plenty to ogle over your cerveza and tacos. An adjoining back room houses a selection of more formal style dining tables as opposed to the couches and low tables surrounding the main bar. So far so authentic, and the menu is no exception - stuffed like an overfilled burrito with all the classic rice, cheese, meat and tortilla variations as well as a smattering of starters, dips and meat mains to keep even the hungriest bandito smiling. To kick things off a few buddies and I went straight in for a round of Coronas (70k++) accompanied by the Mexican appetizer that has managed to infiltrate almost every menu on the planet – the ubiquitous nachos. We kept things simple and ordered Plain Nachos (50k++), but there is also Chicken Nachos (60k++), Pastor Nachos (70k++) or Beef Nachos (70k++) to choose from.The nachos were an excellent warm up for the main events – namely a Pastor Burrito (85k++), Chicken Fajitas (80k++) and a Trio of Taquerias (40k++/pc). The good thing about Mexican is you always know what you’re getting and the standard elements of guacamole, salsa and sour cream are always somewhere in the mix – no matter how your dish is presented. After another round of drinks that includes the Hacienda signature T&T (tequila & tamarind – 95k++) and the fruity Very Berry Margarita (90k++) we share out a couple of the indulgent warm Chocolate Cake (50k++) served with vanilla ice cream and raspberry coulis. Open for lunch and dinner from 10am-1am and with live music and DJ from 7.30pm, every night is party night at Hacienda, and if that wasn’t enough get your Latino moves down with Salsa Sundays from 6pm. It’s been over eight years since Damien Rice released his bittersweet second album 9 – a period of limited output and gigs that saw the troubled troubadour sliding perilously toward obscurity. Clearly disillusioned with the industry and recorded in the middle of what was both a professional and emotional breakup with Irish folk siren Lisa Hannigan, 9 had a difficult birth compared to the relative serenity of slow burning debut O. For the fans, live shows following the release of 9 became increasingly uncomfortable affairs, the reclusive Rice cranky and disengaged while Hannigan’s absence took a noticeable toll on the mostly duet songs that had suddenly lost their sweet edge. As the decade drew to a close, Rice was nowhere to be seen, reportedly spending his

at once deeply personal and emotional, but also a joyous return to what he does best.

The turnaround came in 2010, when super-producer Rick Rubin stepped into the picture, coaxing Rice out of his shell and inspiring a fresh sense of purpose in the singer. “Sometimes you have to step away from what you love in order to learn how to love it again,” explained Rice, as sessions for My Favourite Faded Fantasy wound up in Reykjavik, adding that Rubin had been invaluable as a sounding board and anchor during the creative process. Aesthetically, there’s no great departure from what we’ve come to expect from Rice on album number three, but such is the quality of songwriting, Hannigan’s absence is no longer conspicuous and it flows from one beautiful moment to the next. What we end up with is eight stunningly crafted songs that directly address his time in the wilderness –

Subtle brass and swirling strings (thanks to long-time cohort Vyvienne Long) give MFFF an orchestral feel – particularly as songs like “Colour Me In” and “It Takes a Lot to Know a Man” reach their crescendos, but it’s the dusky, muted guitar ballad “The Greatest Bastard” that best exposes the fragility and honesty of this remarkable singer songwriter – “I never meant to let you down” he sings, voice trembling with the kind of genuine emotion that is so absent in music nowadays. Keeping a degree of balance are songs like the defiant title track, and “Trusty and True” with its rousing singalong – threads of hope that bind the album into the truly magical package that it is. If it takes him another eight years to record something even half as good, it’ll be worth the wait.

Wiradana

Made Wiradana has had an interest in visual art since he was young. Born in Denpasar, he started exploring arts when he joined the High School of Arts in Denpasar. Soon after graduating from school, he moved to Yogyakarta and entered the Institute of Arts where he earnestly learned advanced techniques. Wiradana is known to have a unique style of painting. It is contemporary-figurative with an approach of primitive aspects and humor. For him, the presence of the primitive form on most of his works is because he believes that the past canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be possibly removed from the human subconscious, while humorous characters are created to add more playfulness on his canvas. He then incorporates these aspects with elements through the harmonization of colors. His paintings are meant to spread awareness of saving nature. As a Balinese artist, his sense of art is also nourished by his spirituality and the philosophy of Hinduism; it is the Tri Hita Karana that emphasizes the harmonious relationship between man and his God, humans and the natural world, and human beings with each other. He believes this teaching can be a filter of any life crisis if people can hold it firmly and understand its spirit. Thus, he shares this thought in his works.

In Indonesia, he has held successful solo exhibitions in Jakarta, Magelang Yogyakarta, Malang, Surabaya and Bali. His works have been going overseas as well, showcasing at spaces in Singapore, South Korea, India and even Belgium. On Saturday November 22,the BSF Paralympic Shooting Club (BSFPSC) was inaugurated at the Tohpati shooting range. Headed by Berman Simorangkir, BSFPSC was created by Rodney Holt of Bali Sports Foundation, with the aim of tapping into the potential of disabled shooters. Shooters compete in 10 metre air rifle or pistol, 25 and 50 meter rifle. Focusing on polio, amputee and paraplegic athletes ,the sport of target shooting is proving popular amongst the community of people with disabilities, with over 25 active participants.
