2014 has left the room and didn’t that go quick? Last year definitely had its challenges but in the end the year as a whole went rather well. We have a new president, there are more tourists than ever and the booming state of the Bali economy continues to flourish. 2015 looks set to break all the records again with over four million tourist arrivals expected, better roads on the way (somewhere), petrol prices to remain stable (we hope) and electricity not to increase any more in price (it must be the most expensive electricity on the planet already). The whole local economy is a finely balanced act right now and with the open and less bureaucratic style of Jokowi’s central government, this year should be an interesting one to watch. Most tourists coming to Bali think it’s a cheap place to holiday and it probably is if you stay in an Uluwatu warung surfing every day, but the reality for most is an economy that is dancing on a tight rope. The Benoa Bay development looks set to be the main point of contention as the island continues to grow. Both sides of the argument are flooding the press with their views and it’s still difficult to say where that will end. The roads going to the north of town and into Canggu still remain exactly as they have been since years ago but with ten times the amount of traffic on them. Those new footpaths through Petitenget and Batubelig, with trees planted on either side effectively knocking out more space, must be the most illconceived idea in recent history. Why didn’t they widen them while they had the chance is the question. Yes, there are still many issues to face but this is Bali and that’s the way it is – we always seem to get across the line in the end. Life and development moves along so fast around here that it makes it still one of the most exciting places to live on the planet. So hold on to your hat, ‘cause here we go again. SCOOP Mushrooms Now Illegal Police Commissioner I Gede Ganefo appealed to the people who still eat “magic mushrooms” (psilocybin mushrooms) to immediately stop the habit. From January 1, 2015, the fungus will be considered a drug and will be dealt with similar to marijuana. “Beginning in January 2015, we will immediately follow the law with no tolerance,” said Ganefo on Wednesday. He said to reporters that the socialization process by Denpasar Police began in early September and says that is presumably long enough. And now it’s time for action. “It’s not our problem, we’ve already pointed it out clearly,” he added. “The penalty is similar to marijuana, because these mushrooms also contain psilocybin,” said Ganefo. As has been previously reported, this type of mushroom has become a class I narcotic and is now regulated by the Narcotics Act No. 35 of 2009, with a penalty of up to 20 years in prison.

Jetstar to Commence Bali-Cairns Route Low cost carrier, Jetstar is set to start flights between Bali and Cairns from March 31 next year. The route will be serviced by Jetstar’s Airbus A320 single-class aircraft and the flight duration is estimated to be three hours. Jetstar has offered $99 one-way fares as a launch sale special. “We know from airport research and our own bookings that there are plenty of Cairns travelers interested in a direct service to Bali,” said Jetstar Australia and New Zealand’s chief executive, David Hall. “Bali is consistently rated as one of Cairns residents’ most popular unserved destinations and we know our low fares will appeal to families and groups of friends looking for a tropical getaway,” he added. Hall expects tourists in Bali will be attracted by the cheap fares and choose Cairns as their first arrival point in Australia. “Bali is a destination that draws people from all over the world and it’s likely we’ll see travelers take up the opportunity of these low fare flights across to Australia to kick-start their journey to the Great Barrier Reef and beyond,” he said.

Born in Singapore and residing in the Netherlands, DJ Krumbs is a real old school fan, he drops classics to surprise his audience and keep the flow going. His journey began 10 years ago, dabbling with turntables and CDJs in his bedroom. A love for funk, soul, old school hip hop and breakbeats saw Krumbs venture into spinning for breakdance showcases such as Street Clap, Floorskillz and Dan´s Festival. By combining his turntable skills with musical flow, Krumbs has the ability to scratch, cut and layer his tracks to make the dance floor erupt throughout his sets.

Growing up in a musical family, Quintino was blessed with talent and a broad musical influence. The choice of what his future occupation would be was definitely not a hard one. He started DJing in his fathers club at the age of 15. Whilst completing school, Quintino worked as a DJ on weekends and was instantly hooked on the profession. Over the years Quintino developed an impressive array of skills that would not go unnoticed. While playing in a club at the age of 18, he was discovered by house mastermind Laidback Luke. He was so impressed with Quintinos ability behind the turntables that he decided to take the young artist under his wing.

After being discovered, Quintino started to take his stature as a DJ and producer beyond the normal club scene, playing landmark gigs and high profile festivals. Highlights include performing at Mansion and LIV in Miama, Pacha in New York, XS in Las Vegas and multiple tours in Europe and Asia. In the summer of 2011, Quintino decided to join forces with Sandro Silva and continued his ascent into the Dutch Dance Music elite with the release of “Epic” on Tiestos Musical Freedom label. At this point of his career, he was working every weekend in a different country whilst working on track after track when he had the time.

His life changing break came in 2009 when he released a remix of Cidinho & Doca´s “Rap Das Armas”, which became a worldwide summer anthem and notched over 10 million views on Youtube. Hailing from Amsterdam, Dylan Hermelijn began it all in the late 80s. He came from the hiphop background but was heavily infected by the acid house bug, leading him to produce his first record when he was 17 under the moniker 2000 and One. This label is now internationally recognized as Amsterdam’s longest running tech house imprint, in which its foundations have paved the way for the success of his other labels.

He later became a resident at Palas in the south of France and played with a list of huge acts like Axwell, Steve Angello, Benny Benassi and Little Louie Vega.

Michael Learns to Rock is one of the most popular soft rock/pop rock Danish bands, in their homeland as well as the ever-eclectic Asian rim. The group was formed in the spring of 1988 by singer, song writer and keyboard player Jascha Richter, plus guitarist and producer Mikkel Lentz, drummer Kare Wanscher and bassist Soren Madsen. In that summer the band won a local talent competition and started out on a nearly-two year-long tour around Denmark, which gained them an ever-growing audience which helped them sharpen up and really start working hard on their music. After months of hard work in the studio, the band released their self-titled album in September 1991. Among the hit songs on the album “The Actor” went #1 on the charts in Norway, Sweden, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, which led them to meet their new friends in Asia.

Busiest Year Ever This year was by far the busiest Bali has ever seen with more and more tourists both domestic and foreign arriving by the plane load. The latest statistics show 2,780,777 arrived in 2014 and those numbers were released all the way back in September. Sure, there have been some issues with the increased load, but economically speaking, these are definitely the good times. Great Dry Season We actually had a dry season on the island, which doesn’t seem all that fantastic until you think of the years where it rained all the way through. We have climactic oscillations and of course, climate change, to thank for that. But we should really count our blessings when we get an epic dry season. lack Diamond is a welcome addition to the Kuta culinary scene with an assortment of dishes and very distinct branding. Located on the first floor of Love Fashion Hotel which is part of the Fashion TV empire of all things fashionable, the interior is very modern, one could even say, fashionably modern. The branding itself centers on their diamond logo which is prominently featured just about everywhere you look throughout the hotel and restaurant. You can even play a game with yourself or friends where you try to count how many diamond shapes are all over the interior. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the diamond bar displays, diamond ashtrays, diamond ceiling accents, diamond tables, diamond booths, diamond salt shakers, you get the idea. We started with a Goat Cheese Crunchy Pecan Salad (75k) which had watercress, English spinach, sun dried tomatoes and dried cranberres. The dish was in the shape of a diamond and the actual goat cheese was fittingly molded into the shape of a diamond as well. If you played the game, you would have gotten an easy two points just by ordering the dish. The cheese had that perfect goat cheese taste and crumbled in a very satisfying way. The crunchy pecans added a savory nutty flavor that complimented the rest of the salad. Next up was the Pork Short Ribs Barbeque (175k) which is an excellent choice for those feeling rather carnivorous.The ribs were cooked to near perfection with the meat sliding off the bone and the sauce was moderately applied as to not drown out the natural flavor of the pork. It sat atop a bed of bok choy and had lychee, fried banana, and smoked tomato placed around it. Aside from the plate, no other diamond shapes could be found. We washed all the deliciousness down with a cocktail called Mid Night in Legian (125k) which consisted of a muddled mix of fresh lime, orange wedges, and black grape along with simple syrup, red wine and Bevedere vodka. It was layered which not only made it esthetically pleasing, but also essentially two drinks in one. For desert, we had their chef-recommended Cigarillos Spring Roll (55k) which was a fun way to end the meal. It included ice cream, fruit berries, and apple and pear filling. They were amusing to dip and had a conservative level of sweetness. Black Diamond is a good option for those of you looking for a fashionable meal. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re open 24 hours which makes them just about the best late night dinner/breakfast that you can get in Kuta which is a huge plus. www.beatmag.com

“Every year is getting shorter; never seem to find the time, plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines,” sang Dave Gilmor once upon a time, evidently referring specifically to 2014 - a year which seems to have vanished even more quickly than usual. That said, it certainly hasn’t been short of a good tune or two, so as 2015 approaches, let’s cast our bloodshot, hungover eyes back over the crème de la crème of the past twelve months. 1. The War on Drugs Lost in the Dream The departure of Kurt Vile could have spelled the end for the Philly quintet. Instead, Adam Granduciel fished an absolute masterpiece out of a period of lonely touring around North America. A shoe-in for The Beat’s album of the year, Lost in the Dream reimagines heartland rock a la Bruce Springsteen & Tom Petty to magnificent effect. 2. Royal Blood Royal Blood Two pasty lads from Brighton take on Jack White, Queens of the Stone Age and Muse, giving the lot of them more than a run for their money. Gigantic riffs and primal drums - loud as cannons. 3. Alt-J This is all Yours A labyrinthine art-pop epic from the Oxford trio that never sits still in its wanderings to the outer limits of inspiration, flinging the listener through the subconscious minds of its creators with its bewildering mix of pastoral guitar folk and tribal swagger. 4. Wirawan W

irawanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work revolves around social commentary, portrayal of human relationships and his hallmark use of symbols and expressionism to convey his mind. Born in Sukawati, he started his art journey in 1987, studying the painting traditions of Batuan style in the village of Batuan. In 1995, he completed his study at the High School of Arts in Batubulan and continued to the Institute of Arts Indonesia in Yogyakarta. Basically a painter, Wirawan also extended his art to installation, sculpture and photography. He explores art deeply and conveys many things through it. He believes that through art, he can voice out what is in his mind in a better way. His art is not bound to any particular style, yet he strongly believes that the meaning behind the visuals is important. His inspiration comes

from the community where contradictions take place; it is not only about the condition but also the social gap that often occurs. Wirawan aims to spread awareness to people who are spending their time to witness and enjoy his art. He knows that art indeed cannot solve problems, but can bring people around to the brighter light. Through his works, he wants people to be touched and more aware. Wirawan is currently exhibiting at Positive Negative Gallery. Here, he brings a collection of canvas and paper works which are inspired by his time immersed in the Top End of Australia. This solo exhibition sees him sharing, interpreting and giving a response to the connections he made with the people and landscapes during his short stay, which he also relates to the social life of Bali.

Delta is a rather imposing square building on Jl. Dewi Sri with giant neon lights out front. The place has a modern feel to it with plenty of glass and post modern decor throughout the lobby area. The locker room is huge at the all male spa and directly past it is a large area containing a small pool, hot tub, cold tub, steam room, sauna, and exercise equipment. Past that is a large lounge with a projector screen which is your last stop before entering the treatment rooms. They offer standard and deluxe rooms which are both dark and discreet.

Feel:

We chose the Wet Massage (900k) which started off with a Thai shiatsu massage. The therapist lays you on your stomach and steps on your back. The pressure applied to key points really loosened up the tighter knots. The therapist then rubbed a generous amount of warm oil and used her hands to manually rub out your entire posterior region and loins which was pleasantly soothing. Curiously, the masseuse also used her thighs to exert pressure along your waist. This was followed by rubbing hot stones along the body giving a warm sensation. After this, you were placed in their wet massage shower area where a generous amount of oil was applied and the therapist proceeded to rub out all the tension throughout the entire body (excluding the ears and face, but including the head). It was magical. The last part of the massage had high pressure water being applied to the front and back of the body along with a soapy scrub by the therapist leaving you feeling very clean.

The spa utilized menthol massage creams for the Thai portion of the massage. They also used baby oil for the shower sequence and had eucalyptus and lavendar varieties.
