SCOOP BECOME ONE is the latest dance event to hit JAKARTA Become One is a new Electronic Dance Music (EDM) event, taking place on March 14th in Jakarta. The venue is the recently opened Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) Center in BSD City. Become One will entertain 20,000 guests with the most sophisticated EDM production Indonesia has ever seen. The 10 hour event will feature six world-renowned DJs performing in a modern, sophisticated environment. The two main DJs for the show have been announced as Avicii and Dash Berlin. He then sought to fulfill his lifelong dream of being a DJ and producer through creating his own music and jumping into the scene.

His debut release titled “Like This” featuring Colonel Red on Flamingo Recordings, has smashed many charts and gained massive support all around the globe. Shiba San is on his way to the big league, from DJing only around his hometown to flying from continent to continent. Hailing from Tuchola in northern Poland, Radek Schweet AKA Razor has secured a reputation for being one of the most innovative DJ/party organizer in Asia. In 2007, he started working as a resident DJ and musical director at MAO Club in Shanghai. Helmed by Razor, this club became a party hub of the region in its time. In 2008, he moved to Hotel Costes’ first international venture namely Shanghai’s Pavillon Costes and started working as creative director.

During his time in Shanghai, Razor has performed alongside many international DJs like Simon Baker, Lindstrøm, Alexander Robotnick and Daniel Wang. He took part in the opening of Klub Turbo Vision and proved an instant success with DJs such as Eric Duncan, DJ Nature, Mike Simonetti and Chez Damier visiting the venue. In line with his other activities as a party organizer, he also formed Ding Dong Disco concept as his vessel in creating groundbreaking underground parties at novel venues like a Chinese navy boat on Shanghai’s Huangpu River, and even once at the world’s biggest Barbie Store.

Raf Fender is a French DJ and producer that specializes in progressive house and trance. His history with music began when he was 12 years old. He played the drums, guitar and piano and was part of a band till he was acquaintanced with house music. His DJing career started in 2000 when he was offered gigs at a couple of parties around Paris such as; Fluid (Queen Club), Man Machine (La Scene) and Pink 75 (Foiles Pigalle) which lead to him playing in other clubs like ManRay, Studio 287, Le Vinyl and more events around Europe.

Fender is known for his explosive sets with strong rhythms and melodic lines which have been causing dance floor chaos amongst trance lovers. His discography dates all the back to 2006 where he had an amazing run of releases on the highly regarded RPO label. From there saw a string of equally impressive outings on Jetlag Digital and Hyline Music imprint. With now more then 100 releases under his belt, the French producer is in the ball park with players such as Gai Barrone, Luke Porter, Johan Nilson, Sonic Union, Denis A and Dyno. His musical choices, technical ability and artistic sense blasted the scene in some of the most recognized party towns in Europe and eventually around the world – not to mention also being invited to play at Jakarta’s notorious Stadium (photo above). More recently, Raf Fender and John Dixon teamed up to create Sens Division, a massive duo now touring and playing around Europe.

Fenders first tracks to really go viral were in the 30 tracks that he released through RPO Records like “Let’s Get Higher”, “To The House” and “Dark Step”. Quincy Kroon aka Qrown is an R&B and hip hop DJ hailing from Amsterdam, Holland. At the age of 17, Quincy started DJing deephouse tracks in his bedroom for fun. He soon realized he had the skills and put his name down for a DJ Contest for ID&T and unexpectedly won which was what sparked his career as a professional DJ. Playing in his hometown and in different parts of the country, Qrown was starting to get the hang of things and ended up being chosen to show his skills in countries such as Spain, Suriname and right here Indonesia.

DJ Qrown is an up and coming R&B DJ. His skills on the decks are the only things that can really speak for him at the moment. After deciding to change his style from house music (which he had been DJing for six years) to R&B, things really started to blow up, the invites started rolling in and now he’s on his way to our island so give him the warmest of welcomes when he arrives to Jenja’s Podium.

Hailing from Switzerland, Tamara Hunkeler AKA Dinka is considered as one of the queens of progressive house music. She has a long affair with music, listening to Pink Floyd in her early years and getting into trance during the teenage years. She took on the Dinka moniker from a small ethnic group located in Southern Sudan to represent her music being universal in nature. Besides playing solo, she is also a part of Swiss DJ group The Helvetic Nerds along with the producer, Chris Reece.

Through her releases on Swiss labels, Unreleased Digital and S2 Records as well as on international labels like Anjuna Deep and Vandit Digital, Dinka has made it to the Beatport Top 10 for progressive house charts in the last three years. She released her first album titled The Temptation in the late 2008 on S2 Records which gained huge positive feedback from many dance communities and was played by biggest DJs all around the globe. In 2010, she released Hotel Summerville which continued the successful and distinctive musical structure she has been following over the past four years. Things to do While it rains FEATURE

Weather can be a real drag on a tropical island and here are a few ideas to get you out of the house in the middle of the rainy season.

2. Surf the east coast. There’s no better time to paddle out than under light rain conditions. All the kooks are out of the water and a lot of times the wind is to a minimum. If it gets harsh or you start to see lightning, it’s probably time to get out. But if you want to beat the crowds, sometimes you gotta make sacrifices.

1. Movie theater. You may think of going to the cinema as purely a night time activity, but movies are playing all day from as early as 12pm. Stroll around the mall, get something to eat, and enjoy an early film session on a digital projector and surround sound.

Some dogs don’t mind getting wet and every now and again it’s pretty cool to walk your dogs in the rain. If your neighborhood is normally full of barking dogs, the rain normally keeps them from being an auditory nuisance. Another bonus is if you do it at night, your dog will stick super close to you and it actually becomes a kind of bonding experience.

4. Run. Biggest complaint about running in Bali is that there are no good tracks. We can’t help you there. But the second biggest complaint is the heat and humidity and if you run in the rain, heat becomes less of a factor. Humidity… Not so much. But there’s something oddly refreshing about running in the rain, your body heats up and it almost feels like the water steams off your skin.

hen I was 11 and Ryoshi first opened in Bali, everything about Japanese cuisine was new to me. I was totally keen on the raw fish, soup that you drink out the bowl, and the dangerous green paste that would clear your nostrils. I was hooked and would want to eat there multiple times a week. My mother would say that she was getting bored of Japanese food, but my argument was that in Japan, it wasn’t “Japanese food”, it was just “food” and they ate it every day. My mom was unconvinced. But I ate there as much as I could.

We also had their Seaweed Salad (35k) which had wakame seaweed from Japan and locally produced bulung boni seaweed. The salad came with a sesame dressing and was nice and cool with a hint of oceanic savor. As for sushi, we tried their Pisang set (90k) which had 13 pieces of sushi including egg, tuna, yellow tail, snapper, butter fish, shrimp, along with tuna rolls and a roe roll. Nothing fancy here, just solid sushi that tastes exactly what one would want from a sushi platter, nothing more, and nothing less.

For our coup de grace, we chose the Una Ju Joh (175k) which was grilled eel in a lacquer bento box.The eel is a Japanese species shipped as fry from Japan and grown in Indonesia. It’s not exactly the most Japanese item on the menu, but it’s hard to resist deep fried mozzarella cheese on a stick with age crumbs. Add some Bulldog sauce and it is pretty much cheesy perfection. Another great appetizer was the Mix Grill (55k) which was an assorted mix of six skewers with pork, chicken, leeks, eggplant, beef, and minced chicken balls. Anytime you’re eating food on a stick, you’re enjoying life and this was no exception.

Ryoshi is also an excellent jazz venue with local and international acts performing at least three times a week. It’s also worth noting that all Ryoshi’s soy products are non-GMO for those of you out there that are concerned with that stuff. So if you want to enjoy solid Japanese cuisine in a relatively casual setting, Ryoshi is for you, even multiple times in the week if necessary.

Ben Howard

Like all the best albums written by those sensitive singer-songwriter types, Ben Howard’s 2011 debut Every Kingdom was a slow-burning affair that ended up selling over a million copies, thanks largely to a couple of wellplaced singles and Howard’s wholesome surfie cool factor. For a follow up, the smart money would have been on more of the same, but the quiet release of four-track Burgh Island EP in late 2012 suggested a vastly different musical direction might be on the horizon for the Kernow local in the lead up to I Forget Where We Were. Gone is the lap-cradled acoustic/ percussive guitar sound, and in its place dreamy electric soundscapes that recall early Verve – all spooky ambience and reverb echoing around in a hollow chamber. The

result is darker, richer and stranger experience that lacks the definition of his debut, evoking instead something much more atmospheric and indistinct – particularly during the opening few tracks like “Small Things” and “Rivers in Your Mouth”, but most of all on the muted, rhythmic “Time is Dancing”, which sounds like it’s being played at the bottom of the ocean.

There’s no doubt that the sombre mood and lengthy tracks (the majority of which clock in in excess of six minutes) of I Forget Where We Were will at best exasperate, and at worst put off, a fair chunk of Howard’s current fan base – particularly those who enjoyed clapping along at the boutique summer festivals to songs like “Only Love” and “Wolves”. Not everyone is going to like this – these are not the sort of songs that will get radio play and I imagine sing-alongs at live gigs will only happen when he breaks out the old material, but that said, the move away from crowd-friendly surfpop to melancholy electronic instrumentation is a bold one, and for that Howard should be applauded as it would have been all-too-easy to churn out another Every Kingdom. n active entrepreneur, Tjandra Hutama K. has a quite long story in the world of photography. He took communication and visual design at the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology in Surabaya, and graduated in 2005. Two years later, he established a digital printing company in Denpasar.

Through this company, he made his way through the professional photography scene and frequently worked on exhibition materials. He is now an active figure in local communities such as the Bali Photographers Association and Denpasar Photography Community, having participated in various exhibitions and won many contests. Tjandra is currently exhibiting his project namely â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tejakula & Blangsingaâ&#x20AC;?, held at Griya Santrian Gallery. This exhibition also sees him working alongside another photographer, a long-time friend named Doddy Obenk. The project started from a tribute to Balinese dance maestro Ida Bagus Blangsinga, which then gotthe two to include Tejakula, a traditional village in northern Bali where

another maestro Ni Luk Menek and the sacred Wayang Wong live. With their different styles, they share the culture that is firmly held by the two villages. Tjandraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s works are more candid-like, evolving around a documentary side. In these villages, he tried to integrate with the locals. He entered temples and joined the whole procession, capturing the moment and soul of it. For him, photography is a form of lesson. His experiences have taught him to be more serious and hardworking, especially when he learns the characters of the dance maestros. Their spirit is what he truly respects, teaching him about dedication. Through this exhibition, he shares his precious experiences in Tejakula and Blangsinga. Through his photographs, he wants people to appreciate the maestros, giving more support to their arts and to the villages who have helped the perpetuity of traditional Balinese culture in this era of modernization.

We tried the 60-minute “Foot Reflexology” and 90-minute “Tui Na Therapeutic Massage” which are their signature treatments and a great combination for healing and relaxing. After a footbath, we moved to the first room and were seated on a comfy reclining sofa with a warm pouch placed under our neck. This treatment started smooth with a warm up massage, followed with harder pressure and strokes aimed gently to points on our foot, fingers and toes, as well as on the calves and upper legs. When our therapist discovered an area of pain, she would work it up until the balance restored and the pain subsided. This “Foot Reflexology” then was closed with a brief, cooling down massage back on our foot. After 60 minutes, we were pleased to move to the next room where the “Tui Na Therapeutic Massage” was done. It literally means “push rub” and the treatment mostly used acupressure to bring the body back into a harmony in order to heal it. Laying on the massage bed, it started with an intense deep tissue massage on the back, followed with the legs and finally ended with head and shoulders. After the session ended, a hot/cold shower was then provided for us to wash down and wrap up the whole tranquil experience.
