It has been beautiful weather on the island lately. It’s supposed to be the wet season but there has been very little of that since the New Year. The occasional rain has appeared during the night, but in general it has been dry and hot almost every day for the last couple of weeks. The best part of all this has been the sunsets which have been magnificent just about every evening over the past couple of weeks. Blazing colors reaching across the darkening sky giving the place an otherworldly feel like you are on another planet or even galaxy. My dog now demands to go for a walk every sunset down to the beach without fail and I don’t blame him. The barking begins about 5.30pm and doesn’t stop until the front door is open and we’re on our way to the beach. Now, this is not a bad thing for both our dispositions. We walk through the back lanes of Oberoi, winding our way down to Ku De Ta and then across the now clean beach sands from there towards Gado Gado and Seminyak beach. It takes about one and a half hours to get there and back and it is a great way to refresh and find some well needed fitness. All this may be short-lived as the weather could change at any moment and the rains will return at some point guaranteed, but for now my dog and I are going to make the most of it while it lasts ― I hope you are too. This week we actually have a few events to contemplate with Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year’s fast approaching. It’s really time to get planning guys. As for you single dudes, well, a wise man once said that “there’s something more impressive than a man who is completely romantic one day a year and that is a man who is romantic zero days a year”. As for CNY, well, it’s time to be all new all over again just like a few weeks ago and this time we’re dealing with a goat. Matthew Dekay is a Dutch electronic music composer and DJ whose label All Day I Dream is responsible for pushing some of today’s most romantic, melancholic and emotional house music. Matthew was first exposed to electronic music in the early 90s while growing up in Haarlem in the Netherlands. Listening to composers like Vangelis and Terry Riley at a really young age paved his path to grow up and become musically trained enough to chase his dreams of being a musician. Now as far as a DJ/producers go, Matthew Dekay has always been a name synonymous with quality productions and high energy live performances.

Where you might have heard HIM

Following Matthews first official release on One Star recordings in 2001, his tracks started getting a whole lot of support from the likes of Danny Howells, Sasha and Deep Dish. This led Matthew to begin his career as a DJ, and by 2003 he found himself playing at festivals such as Extrema, Dance Valley, Sensation and the Berlin Love Parade, as well as many other clubs around the Netherlands. Following the very successful period in Dutch pop during the late 90s, Matthew moved into more underground musical circles and it was with releases such as the “Dekay meets beastie Boys bootleg of “Intergalactic” in 2003, “Higher Thoughts” in 2004 and “Bad” in 2005 that he really cemented his place amongst the big players of the industry.

NOTABLE TRACKS

From his close relationship with Dutch mega promoters Extrema, he released a mix compilation Time to Think which became the official soundtrack to the outdoor festival in 2003. He then went on to make the highly sought after and respected Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 in 2004 and release his critically acclaimed Trousy compilation in 2005. Lee Burridge came over from London to work in the studio and they finally finished “Wongel”. Nick curly – head of the German label Cecille Records – loved it, and immediately signed it to his label. “Wongel” went on to peak at #6 in the Beatport Tech House Charts.

Ricardo Villalobos is a minimal techno DJ/producer from the land of Chile. From his early childhood Ricardo loved to travel, since the age of 10 or 11 he knew he wanted to be playing music around the world. At age 15 he was offered a spot in a little discotheque in his hometown in Germany and by the time he reached his late teens he was producing music. In 1993, whilst in university, Ricardo started his own record label Placid Flavour, but unfortunately flopped. His first record was released on the German Playhouse label in 1994 and he began DJing professionally in 1998.

Where you might have heard HIM

In this present moment, Ricardo Villalobos is regarded as on of the most important minimal DJs in Europe, alongside other talented Chilean DJs and producers such as Luciano Nicolet (an occasional collaborator) and Danny Jack, but his style is like non other – he breaks down the barriers between house, techno and minimalism, and seasoned with fresh sounds that emerge alongside the South American percussive note. He is a humble guest in just about all the best clubs in Germany: Ohmen (Frankfurt), E-Werk (Berlin), Ultraschall (Munich), Ostgut/ Panoramabar (Berlin) alongside the many nights in Ibiza. In addition to that, he also regularly performs in some of the best festivals in the world.

NOTABLE TRACKS

In the summer of 2003 he released his mixtape Taka-Taka on the Cocoon Label whilst working on his debut album Artichoke released on his buddy Luciano’s label Playhouse. Since then he has provided notable mixes like “Listen to the Hiss” and his mix for Isollee “Djamel et Jamshid”. Another notable project was his collaboration with Jack Danny (AKA Martin Schopf) “Magma”. And with pieces like “Ibiza 99” and “808 The Bassqueen” has increased his fan club with the flawless mix of its cutting deep grooves and hypnotic vibe.

“I have always DJed the same way. I don’t jump around and make a big show and scream or whatever. Things like that is not my style. You have to be very concentrated, but you also have to be in the mood of the people, that is very important,” says Ricardo. Known for the wicked vibe he gives out during his sets. Detroit Swindle are Dutchmen Maarten Smeets and Lars Dales. Maarten’s early DJ career was nothing to really brag about; he only played for small clubs and did lots of behind-the-scenes work including organization and promotion for parties. Lars, on the other hand, was a really good hip-hop DJ; he did parties as well as promoting for over ten years. Their first encounter was in 2004 while doing programming for the same club in Amsterdam, but it was only in 2011 that they reunited and finally found out that they liked and were inspired by the same stuff which was Detroit’s Motown.

Detroit Swindle’s first release was in 2012 on vinyl, titled “The Wrap Around EP” and was produced through Huxley’s label Saints and Sonnets. Their EP on Tsuba named “The Passion EP” contains a true underground vibe while maintaining a soulful groove. They produced their debut album in 2014 titled Boxed Out on Dirt Crew Recordings, featuring a hint of disco, some deep house, some banging club tracks, some leftfield hip-hop jams and some great crossgenre collaborations. This album comprises 13 tracks including “B.Y.O.”, “Shotgun”, “The Fat Rat”, “Huh, What!” and “F6”. Their discography also includes remixes on Homework’s “Spinning Top”, Medlar’s “Knockard” and TCTS’s “These Heights”.

Wehbba MINT FRIDAY february 27 Roots

Wehbba is one of the most important techno DJ/producers hailing out of Brazil, having his name featured across the world in a lot of tracks with established and respected labels. The former guitarist fell in love with electronic music in the beginning of 1997, when he was living in Australia for some time. Since then he was immediately interested in becoming the one who spun the music; primarily to show his friends the music he was finding and coming up with. His DJing skills and charisma gave him a lot of respect, and soon he got his first invitation to play at the Brazilian club Botechno, in 2001, one of the most famous at the time.

When Botechno closed down he wanted to find something else to stand out from the Brazilian DJ scene and started producing his own music. Using his musical background and a little help from friends that were already involved in music production, he developed a style that ranges from house, electro tunes to big room and lounge, but his main focus was techno and tribal techno. His achievements as a producer can be measured in the amount of respected artists and legendary DJs he has worked, remixed and collaborated with. Although notably and actively working with Swedish Christian Smith, the list can be extended to the likes of Laurent Garnier, Robert Babicz, X-Press 2, Chris Lake, 16 Bit Lolitas, Valentino Kanzyani, Joseph Capriati, Suara, Kolombo and a ton more.

NOTABLE TRACKS

His first album was released by the end of 2004, called Revoltin URBR (Underground Records Brazil) when he was still in command of his first techno label called Oil Filter, which has also released an EP on Juan Atkins’ label Motroplex, then he left Oil Filter to go on with his solo career and came up with his current label Hybrid Players. He has also released two vinyl records with the German label Killabeat, and four other vinyl releases on URBR, Titanium. Wehbba also hosts two monthly radio shows. ‘Sound Perspective’, a personal podcast broadcasted on Digitally Imported and on Amsterdam’s hot club Studio 80s radio station, which is distributed to over 50 radio stations worldwide.

The Beat spoke with Agus, one of the local organizers of the event, which takes place in a purposely built and recently refurbished Mirah boxing ring on Jalan Majapahit. We spoke about the event and what happened to Hambone.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the name of the event and where and when is it being held? MHLLT.com and Mirah Boxing present Bali Fight Night. It is being held in a newly refurbished boxing stadium that seats about 2000 in the heart of Kuta on Jl. Majapahit on February 20.

Has there been something like this Bali Fight Night before on the island? There have been similar events held in Bali but never to this scope. We plan to showcase some of Indonesiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top boxers and some rising stars in a literal old skool Roman coliseum, all that will

We have Larry Siwu, current WBO welterweight Asian Pacific regional champion squaring off in an exhibition fight against one of his fellow countrymen. Also we have Sahlan Coral the current Indonesian national welterweight champ swinging away, plus a raft of ex champs and some really exciting up and comers on the Indonesian boxing scene.

One last question, there was a famous bout between a local expat dude by the name of Hambone and some Yankee fella at the last big boxing event in Bali. Will there be a rematch this year? The return of the Samson was penciled in on the fight card but was scrubbed due to tendonitis of the fibier blade, but keep an eye out as he is back in training awaiting his next call to glory… The Bali Fight night is being held at the Mirah boxing camp on Jl. How did Girls Love DJs come about, how did you meet and start playing music? Girls Love DJs started out as a party concept in Amsterdam more than 10 years ago. A bunch of friends who could DJ would play their own sounds at a club and all the girls would show up to dance. Bringing all of that talent together and combining it with the love for your favorite songs simply works. You could feel the fun running in your veins. It escalated really quickly into unbelievable parties all over the Netherlands and after that all over the world.

After crossing the borders and doing big festival stages we decided to take it to the next step. We captured the magic of the events, that energy, that indescribable feeling and made it ours in a DJ set. We started to produce music to support our set with surprises and before we knew it, it all made sense. The Amsterdam party scene is small and if you’re any good, it’s inevitable that you meet each other. We met each other and immediately hit it off as if we were brothers. This was 2012 and the rest is history.

FEATURE You guys look like a fun bunch of dudes, you sure play fun music. The new modern, banging electro stuff with a few nuances here and there. Is that what you have always played or is that something new? Ha! That’s because we are. Even if we’re not performing, we are always playing around. Life should be celebrated at any moment in big and small things. We do it all for the kicks and fun and our music needs to express the way we feel. We are known to mix it up a little, we aren’t afraid to play different genres, but the sound will always be the same. High energy, much fun, the girls love it and there will always be enough impact to get the guys jumping too. We have always had this sound, but the genres may change along with the times. How about producing? You’ve done a few remixes of Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, John Newman, what other music have you producing lately? In the beginning we used our productions to elevate our own sets. You know the usual edits, remixes and bootlegs. Eventually we were making official remixes for Beyonce, working with Alvaro, Dirtcaps, The Partysquad and many others. That was the focus for last year, but for 2015 we have a lot of originals lined up for you. You can expect anything from us really, it could be future house or something a bit more EDMish, but it will always sound like us. What are some of the greatest music influences? We get inspired by all sorts of sounds. We love the big pop songs that a superstar like Calvin Harris makes, just as much as the beats by Tchami or Oliver Heldens. Sometimes we dive into some deephouse or can’t stand still to those massive UK bass lines. We get influenced and inspired all over the place. What were some of the highlights of 2014 and what are they gonna be in 2015? We did a big Totally Summer Tour last year with 20+ shows all over Europe, we played

in China too and in Suriname. Tour life is fantastic. Especially when you can combine it with the biggest festivals in your home country. Amsterdam Open Air, Valhalla, Kingsday, Mysteryland and many more made this summer unforgettable. In 2015 we are doing it all again, just a little harder, better, faster, stronger. Starting out with our shows in Indonesia, we can’t wait! Girls Love DJs are famous for livening up any party. Do you think it’s getting wilder all the time or do you see yourselves slowing down soon? Well, to be honest we have seen a lot of craziness out there lately. We think it’s about releasing energy, having fun, dancing, smiling and creating an experience, the time of your life and something worth remembering. It doesn’t always have to be sitdowns, party tricks and stagedives to be legendary. Sometimes when the connection with the crowd is right, you can really let the music do all the talking. We love doing both. And where would you say are the best parties around the world? Where do you have the best time normally? That is an impossible question to answer. Playing in Europe is amazing, but it takes an amazing set to live up to those expectations. They are very familiar with your sounds and everyone around you, but if you push their buttons they will definitely go nuts! Playing in Asia is totally different. It’s a beautiful challenge, all about connecting and learning with and from the crowd. We love discovering what makes you go crazy! Last question. Ever been to Indonesia before? It’s the first time for one of us (Rob) but he will love it for sure… “How I know?” I’ve been there like 10 times already. Thanks Ron, see you on the dance floor.

eet Funkagenda. Hailing from the UK, Funkagenda has been leading in the electronic music scene for a long time now and has flown into Bali a couple times in his career. It is always a treat to hear his funky rolling techie house grooves and we’re more than happy to present you a Q & A with the funk meister.

Hey man, how are you doing and what brings you into town this time? Well I have a number of shows here (Bali, Jakarta and Manila). Honestly though, whenever I get the opportunity to come to Asia, I jump at the chance. I love all the different cultures and the architecture throughout the different cities and countries. When did you start DJing and what or who were your early passions and influences? I started DJing in my 20s but I started producing when I was about 13/14. The first dance artists I was influenced by were A Guy Called Gerald, Orbital, Carl Craig, Deep Dish, Aphex Twin, Autechre... To be honest, the list is pretty long and I can’t remember them all right now! What was the club scene like when you were coming through and what effect did it have on you and your musical taste?

It was very techno-centric. I would see people like Dave Clarke, Jeff Mills, and Surgeon on a weekly basis. It made my tastes lean heavily towards technology based music. I think that is where my love of gear and my interest in the roots of production came from. Recently you’ve produced everything from techno to progressive, what genre is your favorite? I don’t have a favorite. I produce whatever takes my fancy on any given day to be honest. Sometimes I start with chords and it will be a melodic dance/EDM track. Sometimes I start with a patch and it ends up more techno based. Do you enjoy playing for a festival audience or a club audience more? They both have their own challenges and attractions. You can’t really beat a really switched on club crowd though. The vibe you get from knowing that you hold that room in the palm of your hand is indescribable. What are currently your main challenges as a DJ? Compared to say, producing? There is so little good music out there. Don’t get me wrong, there are stunning producers. But so few artists know how to cover ground in their tracks. I like a track with a good solid

groove and a good uplifting break. Most tracks these days have one or the other. What’s your stance on downloading music from file sharing websites like Zippyshare and Mediafire? I still think it’s theft. Always have. People will happily go into Starbucks and pay $4.50 for a cup of mass ground, budget coffee but they won’t pay 99 cents for a piece of music that was lovingly crafted by somebody with dreams and a vision. A song that may or may not become the soundtrack to a part of that person’s life... You tell me, how is that fair? People refuse to pay for anything they don’t have to nowadays, but they don’t realize that their lack of support for the industry is one of the main reasons why there is so much shite music around these days.

What’s one food you can’t live without on the road? Hotel spaghetti bolognese. It’s one of the few dishes that you can pretty much always guarantee will be good anywhere in the world. I feel like hotels have a secret recipe.... What’s your favorite place to play in and why is it so memorable? I love playing in Japan. ocated on Jl Kartika in the south end of Kuta, Railway sits on prime realestate where a number of hotels and a throng of foot traffic wander back and forth. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s located inside Kuta Station Hotel and has a front side view of the road. They serve Mexican, Chinese, Indonesian and Western dishes. The interior of Railroad is a no frills functional space with row upon row of tables in a grid pattern very much reminiscent of a beer hall or cafeteria. An open kitchen dominates the south side of the restaurant much like an island in a sea of tables. In front of the restaurant lies a live seafood display much like a tasty aquarium of fish and crustaceans that you can select for lunch or dinner. Flat screen TVs lined the walls showing predominantly Australian sports including NRL, AFL, and cricket as well as American sports like NBA and NFL.Another ubiquitos feature of railway is their locomotive engine proudly on display.

FOOD We started with the Mozzarella Cheese Sticks (45k) which was breaded and fried mozzarella cheese with marinara sauce. It was an excellent snack full of cheesy goodness in each bite. From their Mexican items, we tried their Chicken Taquitos (50k), they were bite sized pieces of chicken breast in a corn tortilla that was fried and accompanied with salsa, guacamole, and sour cream. Another heartier dish was their Sop Buntut (110), this classic Indonesian dish is made out of a fragrant broth with stewed oxtail which fell off the bone. From their Chinese section of the menu, we had the Samcan with Soya Sauce (80k). It was crispy pork belly drizzled with a soy based sauce that went perfect with rice. Railway is pushing their live seafood menu which has everything from mantis shrimp, to lobster, to grouper, clams and much more on display at the front of the restaurant. We had the Fried Crab with Singapore Sauce (market price) which was the highlight of the meal. The crabs come from Kalimantan or Papua and we had the Kalimantan crab which was purported to have a firmer texture. It was perfectly cooked and has a tangy salty sauce that was finger licking good. Railway also offers some great beverages with their Love@First Sight (100k) which was made up of Blended of Vodka, banana liqueur, Triple Sec, mango puree, sweet and sour, pineapple juice & grenadine syrup. It was refreshingly nice. Railway is an excellent place if you just want a solid feed, especially if you have a lot of people with you. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new live seafood menu is a real contender on Jl. Kartika.

in the towel and calling time, (understandably) citing that it would’ve been too hard to go on. Not The Charlatans though. When keyboard player Rob Collins was killed in a car crash in 1996, the rest of the band picked themselves up, dusted themselves off and went on to record career highpoint Tellin’ Stories. So when drummer Jon Brookes tragically passed away from brain cancer in late 2013, many wondered if indie’s great survivors could do it again or this time decide to really call it quits. Happily yes, once again adversity has paved the way for an album that is up there with The Charlatans best – no easy feat and a fitting tribute to the late drummer. Despite the circumstances, Modern Nature is saturated in enough warm sunshiney vibes and feel-good tunes to make you shrug off the January chill. For a kickoff, “In the Tall Grass” contains the funkiest white-boy Hammond

organ solo since The Spencer Davis Group required some lovin’, and “Come Home Baby” and the sultry “Keep Enough” have got ‘summer road trip’ written through it like a stick of Blackpool rock. Elsewhere, tracks like “So Oh”, and the Supergrassy “Lean In” update the 90s golden age sound of their halcyon days, but there are a few problems: Clunky-titled “Let the Good Times be Never Ending” feels very dated and drags on to the point where you start to think it might actually never end, and opener “Talking in Tones” does the album no favours with its dirgy chorus and Casio keyboard drum machine but that aside, there is much to celebrate here. So here they are then, battlescarred and bruised but Britpop survivors nonetheless. It seems you can’t keep a good band down. Dan Ashcroft.

The Charlatans have never had an easy run. Forever the baggy Britpop also-rans, Tim Burgess and company are usually mentioned in the same breath as Manchester royalty The Stone Roses, but ultimately left off the ‘most influential bands of the 90s’ lists, despite 1989 debut Some Friendly being arguably one of the key touchstones of a rich period in British music. What must also be really frustrating for looselimbed frontman Tim Burgess, is being eternally relegated to living in Ian Brown’s shadow, such is the similarity between their vocal styles. However, when you think about just how much tragedy this band has endured over the years, it really becomes apparent just how unimportant the comparisons are for this incredibly resilient band. The works were created using a unique technique in which the artist painted the pasted paper on canvas with Chinese ink, which is then chafed and finally scraped to create a scar-like texture. self-taught photographer, Jean-Paul Nacivet was born in France, growing up in a farm where he would skip naptime to play in the woods. He was first introduced to photography as a two-year-old boy, when someone visited the farm and brought a camera to take his picture. In his early 20s, he was employed as an electronic engineer, working three and a half years for a seismic survey company. Doing a lot of traveling from country to country, he also managed to spend most of his free time toward his passion, photography. It was in 1975 when he decided to set off on an epic journey around the world. He started from Paris and took a train to Moscow. From there, he continued to the Far East, passing through city by city along the Trans-Siberian Highway. During this long road trip, he took his first pictures. From trip to trip, he never missed a chance to capture a moment until he finished two and a half years later. In 1979 to 1982, he resided in Japan and decided to devote himself to photography. By 1997, he was so successful and already known for his limited editions and numerous

Jean-Paul Nacivet worldwide publication, but reality led him to another road. He stopped all assignments and dedicated his time to taking pictures only for his own pleasure, and to spend more time with his family. From there, he moved to Bali. Through his works, Jean-Paul shares the feeling of novelty and purity. He is drawn to exploring human beings and exposing them through pristine, bare depictions. He turns them into black-and-white or sepia, enhancing their inner spirit and therefore conveying the ‘reality’. Besides human as his main subjects, he also works on landscape and macro photography. He has no special field; he just captures what the world has to offer. He plays with colors and is well-known for capturing beautiful natural hues. Moreover, he loves taking risks and is always trying out something new. He also believes that there is no bad tools; it is only bad workers who don’t know how to work with their surroundings. Jean-Paul currently has his works on the walls of Pullman Bali Legian Nirwana in an exhibition titled “Journey Through Asia”. A very legitamite spa contender located inside a Bali culinary land mark. Look: Kaiana Spa is located inside the newer half of Made’s Warung, which has turned into a sort of mall offering a variety of retail outlets as of late. As you walk up the stairs to the spa, you’re instantly transported to a completely different setting from Made’s Warung with a clean, cool, crisp interior welcoming you into Kaiana. The decorative motif is a hybrid of both minimal and classical elements that break up the clinical feel that most modern spa interiors convey. The spa has a salon in the back, mani pedi area overlooking the restaurant, a reflexology room and four therapy rooms including one for couples. The therapy rooms are completely self contained with locker, shower, and toilet so that you never have to leave for the duration of your treatment. Feel: We chose a treatment called The Minty Affair package (550k) which lasts two hours and was indeed, a very minty affair. It started off with a lemon, basil and spearmint footbath which had us properly prepped for the massage. The therapist used plenty of palm movements and kneaded away the tension deep in our muscles as well as expertly applied her fingers to pressure points along the length of the meridians and up the spine in a staggered pattern. Once the full body massage was complete, the therapist applied a lemon, basil and spearmint body wash to remove the excess massage oil before the

scrub which consisted of the same natural elements as the body wash. The scrub was applied in two phases to the front and back of the body by the therapist which left our skin silky smooth. The treatment ended with an in-room rain shower which had us feeling brand new. Ingredients: Kaiana uses locally supplied oils, body wash, and scrubs in various scents and blends. Their nail salon is extremely diverse with OPI, Dior, Shellac, Morgan Taylor, Channel, and Guerlain polishes that are available for retail as well.
