Photos are king. Does anyone really take any notice about details anymore? Well maybe those wanting to get to the real heart of the matter, yes, but you have to dive deep into the matrix to find the answers. Instagram appears to have taken over social media circles in recent times making Facebook and Twitter appear clunky, verbose and even passé. I read somewhere that young people now look at FB as part of their oldies world and not anymore part of their world as they move to fast paced and direct to the point platforms like Instagram. And the point is photographs. Path now appears to be another no-go platform. I reactivated my account to discover there was only one friend still active after I hadn’t been on it for a couple of years. Now, how about the proliferation of photo pages on Facebook? Photos of people engaged in having a good time in many of the venues around town - at a price of course. People just want to see themselves and their friends plastered all over the place and they want it more and more. For 15 years we’ve been doing the same here at The Beat, taking photos of the party goers and the events. Back then, when we began, digital photography was at its infancy and I believe we used film cameras for the first couple of editions. It wasn’t long before we found the first digital cameras and began playing around with them. How it’s changed now is mindboggling with just about everyone having a camera of some sort on their phones or even an inexpensive digital camera in their bag or pocket. They are pulled out on every occasion to snap away and send off images to who knows where. Where do all those photos go? That too is mindboggling. Most of them will never be seen again. Or checked once just after being taken and never again. So in the end, there are so many people that want to be seen by as many people as possible, get the biggest reach imaginable and really, for what reason? To be accepted by our peers, to find a mate? One thing is for sure, there is just more and more photos every day and less and less real content to be found anywhere. I hope that wasn’t our fault. l a t e s t

Nicole Moudaber is a highly sought after DJ and producer. Dance music changed her life and she’s now returning the favour. Ever since she got into electronic dance music, the Nigerianborn Lebanese star has dedicated all her energy into finding ways to share the vibe. Hitting New York after a youth spent in Africa and the Middle East, Nicole initially explored her passion for electronic music as a promoter, bringing the NYC style parties she moved to Beirut for the first time. Propelled by her flawlessly executed, sleazy, edgy house and tough, soulful techno sound, she picked up no less than Carl Cox and Steve Lawler as early fans. Carl, who is actually a close friend and mentor, tipped off DJ Mag in 2009, calling her “the most underrated DJ” at the time.

Nicole doesn’t let her rigorous recording schedule take over all her time, her sold out shows across the whole world keep her busy too. Nicole is also an unofficial resident for Space Ibiza and rocked with Marco Carola at the unforgettable send-off by playing the final set at their massive closing party in 2013. Anthony Pearson AKA Chez Damier has been a driving force in underground house music for over two decades. He had a pretty early start in the music industry, working part-time in a Chicago record store from the age of 11 and experiencing the city’s clubs at age of 13. He then developed connections with Detroit’s titans Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, and began producing his own stuff in the late 80s.

Along with a couple of friends, Chez Damier opened The Music Institute in Detroit in the late 80s, serving to catalyze more of an actual techno scene in the city. He also took on the role of manager of Kevin’s weighty KMS estate which allowed him to hone his production skills and refine his creative vision; to a point that he was soon writing for Inner City. He later returned to Chicago and was introduced to Ron Trent by a mutual friend. The two producers created a new label namely Prescription which opened for business in 1993. In 1995, he started to focus more on Prescription sub-label, Balance. He exited the music scene in 1996, and returned in 2004 creating sporadic cuts for labels Track Mode and Secretsundaze. In 2012, he started a residency at Chicago’s longrunning house weekly Boom Boom Room. He also played at festivals, including the most recent Electric Elephant in 2014.

NOTABLE TRACKS

In addition to managing the label and studio, Chez also had his own releases on KMS titled “I Never Knew Love” and “Can You Feel It”. The tracks was produced in 1992 containing some deep, melodic and achingly emotive sounds. On Prescription, he dropped classic cuts such as Noni/D’Pac’s “Be My”, Ani’s “Love is the Message”, Romanthony’s “The Wanderer” and A Man Called Adam’s “Qué Tal America?”, as well as Chez N Trent’s own minimal masterpiece titled “Morning Factory”. On a German label, Mojuba, he released some of his notable EPs including the Time Visions 1 and Time Visions 2, as well as his latest track titled “Classics”.

Markus Schulz is the pick of the bunch when it comes to progressive house and trance, he is a well known DJ and producer and has become one of the busiest international DJs playing out of the US. Markus was born in Eschwegein central Germany, but migrated to the US at the age of 13. His dance music awakening was sparked through the countries then-nascent breakdance scene. Shulz caught his first production break in 1993 when he remixed Sagat’s ‘Why Is It? (F**Dat)’ for Ffrr. Through the mid to late nineties he continued to accrue acclaim with a ton of releases on numerous popular US labels. Having concentrated long and hard on the hinterland between trance and progressive, he began to gain audiences further and further away. In 2004 he was signed to the David Lewis Productions agency (home to the worlds No.1 trance DJ Armin Van Buuren) which gave his career another massive step forward.

Now a regular fixture at the worlds biggest and most famous clubs, arenas and festivals, Markus Shulz lays down his unique trance-progressive vision on a weekly basis. In Europe he’s worked tent-pegs loose at Trance Energy, Nature One, Dance Valley, Creamfields, Global gathering and brought gridlock to the Love Parade and Tomorrowland. In the states they have felt the wrath of the Schulz at both their big festivals; Electric Daisy and Ultra Festival. After several significant showings in the the top 100 DJ’s chart, Markus ranked as one of the top 10 DJs in the world in 2008 and was also voted Best American DJ at the International Dance Music Awards. He is also responsible for one of the longest running and most respected compilation album series in trance/ electronic dance history; The City Albums, which were actually all recorded in different dance music orientated cities like Ibiza in ‘06, Amsterdam in ‘08 and Toronto in ‘09.

Ku De Ta is currently under renovation with the right side of the restaurant (if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re facing the ocean) out of commission for the next few months. But the rest of the restaurant and lounge area is in full swing with that spectacular sunset view and a pleasant sea breeze. Outdoor day beds are available towards the beach with tables for dining making an L shape around the courtyard. Further back into the cooler areas of the restaurant is where the lounge seating is. Ku De Ta is indeed multifunctional with a lot ways to enjoy the venue.

FOOD The menu offers an assortment of tapas items, pizza, and more substantial lunch items as well as a dedicated fine dining dinner menu. We started off with the some sharing plates with the Chorizo (50g/250k) under the Iberian Cured Meats section of the menu. The Chorizo was perfectly laid out with toasted bread with an excellent creamy spread. Next up was the Chicken & Foie Gras Parfait (150k) which was a brilliantly layered bowl meant to spread on toast with onion caramel and cornichon. It was an amazingly complex treat that was savory and delightful. For the more substantial offerings at Ku, we looked to their dinner menu. For starters, we were lured by their Suckling Pig Urutan (160k) which had young peanuts, baby carambola, pickled jicama, herbs, and toasted rice. Think pulled pork mixed with spice laden herbs and fashioned into a brick. Taking the pork apart was as rewarding as the sumptuous meaty taste. Then there was the Parmesan & Sumac Crusted Pork (280k) it came on a bed of smoked potato puree and featured roasted apple and watercress. The cutlets had a very crunchy crust with the apple playing nicely with the pork. Think sweet and savory with a wonderfully meaty texture. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a magazine and we were very impressed with the layout of the cocktail menu which laid out each individual item like a molecular diagram with a lot of pretty fonts. Kudos to Ku for that nice touch. We tried the KDT Mojito (120k) which had Ketel One vodka, orange, peach, mint, and passion fruit. It was an excellent companion to the ocean view. Lastly we had their Caramel Apple Tart (115k)puff pastry, yoghurt sorbet and apple chip. So delicious. All in all, Ku has remained on the Bali map for its constant re-imagination of itself. Twelve years after Sony flooded the streets of San Francisco with coloured ping-pong balls to the delicate acoustic rumble of “Heartbeats” – lead single from José González’s mesmerizing debut Veneer – and the Gothenburg folkster is still tugging at the heartstrings with his first solo album after time out recording with his dusty indie outfit Junip, as well as soundtracking Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Although he’s not flogging Bravia flatscreens this time, little else has changed and we’re once again back to the kind of slow-burning zen-folk he made his name with. If you fell for the graceful, elliptical songwriting the first time round then you’ll be pleased to know that Vestiges & Claws sticks rigorously to the gameplan – namely; wonderfully uncluttered arrangements of soft acoustic guitar

complimented by González’s gentle croon. Penultimate track “Afterglow” and lead single “Every Age” exemplify this, providing an easy entry point into the album with their gentle, swirling buildup, while the clap-along almostanthem “Leaf Off/The Cave” takes proceedings to their most energetic level.

There is more to be discovered, however. As with his previous material, what appears to be straightforward at first glance reveals myriad textures when you immerse yourself more thoroughly. In the intricate fingerpicking there’s the dexterity of Bert Jansch, and the dreamy vocals recall the melancholy mood of forlorn English folkie Nick Drake. Weaving through everything, a rhythmic West African groove pushes the melodies forward. Take “What Will” – perhaps a nod to Drake’s 1974

This is only his third album in more than a decade, and could have easily been recorded twelve years ago, such are its similarities to Veneer and 2007 follow up In Our Nature, but the magic hasn’t been diminished – it might not be revolutionary but this is powerful stuff nonetheless. So many artists get bogged down in transforming their styles to suit changing times. Not José González apparently, he’s sticking to what he does best and that’s just fine by me. Dan Ashcroft.

Toha Hasan was born and bred in Jember, but moved to Bali 14 years ago, started a new life on the island and married a Balinese woman. He is a self-taught artist with an engineering background, learning the art of painting from a studio in his village. From there, he made friends with the paint and brush, and got hooked on art.

Why art? Art is like my vein. I have liked art since I was still in school. When there was an art class, I would join. My society also shaped me for art, what I am doing now which is a journey in life. I support art and art supports me. Who are your inspirational figures? From Indonesia is Jeihan Sukmantoro. His signature motifs are the dark eyes of the figure as well as the firm and clear strokes. It doesn’t mean that I would copy his style, but I love his simplicity that contains a rich meaning. For international artists, I admire Monet and Pissarro. What are the characteristics of your works? Childish impression. I paint uneven and eccentric shapes. I make a twist on the objects, let’s say human, by not making it in the accordance of its real anatomy, hence the childish look of my ‘human’. In addition, I always have some squares painted side by side which symbolize puzzles. My philosophy is, when you take one square out, the components will be incomplete and the connection breaks. What is the real life situation that inspires you? Family is the number one, and then my surroundings. As you can see, the theme of works are very light; it is mostly about humanism. What I see from my family and the society, I memorize and recreate it on my canvas. And when I paint about my family, I feel happiness.

Do you have other activities besides being an artist? I am a teacher. I teach some painting classes in Kerobokan and Ubud. I also have a free painting class every weekend for the kids in my neighborhood. Can you explain a little about your current exhibition at Ganesha Gallery? The theme is “Symphony of Feeling”. This theme is to remind people who enjoy my works to hone our feelings as humans. I invite all to respect our surroundings by first respecting the closest one to us which is family. Jalanidi Spa This new spa is one of those to look for along the street of Legian, offering a number of competitive treatments. Look: Open since July last year, Jalanidi Spa has been one of the newest sanctuaries to look for in Kuta. The interior is modern and dominated with the calming hues of ivory and green, and wooden furniture and Balinese-inspired adornments. Positioned on the second floor of Legian Paradiso Hotel, the spa features one single room and three rooms for couples which are well-organized and equipped with a bathtub and shower. The spa also provides a space for hair cream baths as well as three chairs for foot reflexology, manicures and pedicures. Feel: Jalanidi Spa offers an extensive selection of treatments mainly purposed for body and beauty. Among the options on their Body Treatment menu, we picked the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Balinese Massageâ&#x20AC;? which lasted 60 minutes (190k). A soothing combination of traditional massage style, this treatment is believed to enhance relaxation, dispel tension and stimulate blood circulation. It features a deep and intense massage throughout the body which involves acupressure, skin rolling, stroking and percussion, combined with the application of essential oil. Facing down, the treatment started on our back and both legs. After a few minutes, we were pleased to turn around after which the massage was applied starting from our legs, going up to the hands and fingers, stomach, shoulder and neck, and

finally head and scalp. Our therapist finished the treatment with another massage on our back while sitting down, and we were then shown the shower to end the whole session. Ingredients: The spa offers a selection of aromatherapy essential oils such as jasmine, lavender, ylangylang, frangipani and eucalyptus. There are also three choices of signature massage oil that mix several ingredients for particular benefits, including the Bali Spice (clove, ginger, nutmeg, basil and lemongrass), Paradise (jasmine, mandarin and ylang-ylang) and Awakening (rosemary, basil and lemon). Magic: Jalanidi Spa is a good retreat for those looking for a pampering experience without spending too much out of pocket.
