All this “reach” stuff on social media is all a little bit over the top, right? Competitions that go “like us” and “be in the running to win half of next to nothing, which we will never give away anyway”, are popping up everywhere and really make me sick. Every time I see one of these competitions to “like us” and win a prize my stomach turns. There is so much importance being put on to this “reach” – how many people are liking you and how many people are reading your posts, etc, but who are these people they are actually reaching? I would imagine the majority are living far away and are just dreaming of being in Bali, far from their miserable lives and places, imagining a beautiful life in the tropics. Some of these sites and social movers and shakers plaster an endless parade of pretty pictures to an adoring public of hundreds of thousands, who write comments like “amazing” or “incredible” over a beach scene that really bares no relationship to Bali besides being a beach. For all we know it could be Brazil. But, the reach is all important. The numbers game is an intense challenge now. A friend of mine who operates the social media for a number of clients makes a lot of money nowadays on people wanting this reach. “They don’t even know why they want it,” he says. “But everyone now thinks they need it.” The internet and social media is still in its infancy when you think about it and we have yet to see what will really come of it and what will come next. Meanwhile, just like everyone else, we look for our reach too, on all the social platforms and why? Just in case. A few things are on the way. St Patrick’s Day for all you Irish folk out there is on March 17. Be sure to grab an ale to celebrate. And then the big one, Nyepi on March 21. This year it more or less takes out an entire weekend so it is surely time to relax, so get your stuff organized in advance and enjoy the silence. Happy Nyepi everyone. l a t e s t

Souldust is a Belgian producer, DJ and audio engineer who dedicates his life to music in all its forms. From an early age, the interest was there. Learning began with the music theory and the guitar but his world soon opened up to a new dimension after touching his first mixing console. Soon he was a sound engineer and Souldust was born by entering the world of vinyl and the electonic music during a trip to London in 1997. Souldust enrolled at the IAD (a recognized school in the audio-visual spectrum of the world) and graduated in 2004.

Souldust’s first big break was when he got offered a residency at one of the most trendy clubs in Brussels nightlife at the time; “Jeux d’Hiver”. He kept sound engineering and actually gained a whole lot of knowledge by being behind the mixing boards and eventually TV and radio broadcasting. In 2007, Neptune Studio was born, a brand new space that allowed artists and labels to improve in the studio, in a professional environment. Souldust worked with and merged with up-coming artsist like himself for two years and eventually left his residency at Jeux d’Hiver to co-found Borderline Corp on the famous Air radio show. Today Soul dust is artist director of Electonic Reeds and still develpes his studio, where he takes care of mixing and mastering – whilst also spinning at most of the hype clubs around Belgium and abroad.

In 2011, Souldust embraced producing and began with two fat remixes; Lex Newton’s “Bushido” and Felix Cage feat. Lazarusman’s “Love Again”. Which propelled him into the download platfroms like Beatport and Whatpeopleplay. Mahesa Utara is an Indonesian producer and DJ hailing from Jakarta. His love for music has developed since a young age, where he was immersed in jazz and funk by his parents. He learned to play drums at the age of 12, and just started fiddling with Cubase in 2007. A year later, he then decided to begin a new career as a DJ. His influences and inspirations include all kinds of music from the house vibes, fidget, to hard electro basslines.

Soon after he started out producing and remixing music, he won a remix competition and won Best Remix of the Year at the Indonesian Redma Awards. He was also crowned as the first runner-up at Indonesia Juice DJ Quest at the end of 2009.

His remix of “Are You Ready” by Angger Dimas, pretty much introduced the moombahton genre to the world when Seb Ingrosso played the track at the Sensation 2010 NYE party in Germany, spearheading the then sound. This remix also gained support from Laidback Luke as it was featured in his Mixmash Radio’s Top 10 list in 2011. Freshly signed up to Vicious, his first original outpost to the Australian label titled ”To the Ground” came with a warning of strong party vibes. His other discography also includes the remixes of Adagio’s “The Touch”, ACIDKIDS & Tommy Sunshine’s “Never Slow” and Subway’s “Think about Me”.

Guti is a classically trained jazz virtuoso, rock ‘n’ roll hero in Argentina, and one of the biggest rising stars in the techno world today. He was born in an exceptionally musical family, which included orchestra directors, saxophone players and pianists. As a teen, after getting into blues he began hanging with successful Argentine rock bands like the Black and Blues, Ratones Paranoicos, Viejas Locas and Los Piojos, and soon enough started his own band called Jovenes Pordioseros which ended up playing for crowds with up to 10,000 people. But its not Guti’s nature to be stuck onto one thing for a long time. In 2006, he spun things around and chose to try out a career in electronic music and more importantly; techno.

Where you might have heard Him

Curious and creative, Guti adapted and fused a style that incorporated his jazz and Latin roots into his tracks, which was a massive hit and actually changed his life from being a famous member in a rock band to being one of the most interesting techno producers from the Latin American scene. A heart beat later; he landed a hit with Damian Schwarz on Frankfurt label “Raum Musik”, which was licensed and used by Loco Dice for his compilation, The Lab. Guti was soon recruited for the record label Desolat and was offered to play his amazing live sets in some of the best clubs of the world with talented Desolat artists such as Loco Dice, Traumer, Luca Angelli, and Dubfire. Other Artists like Carl Cox, Marco Carola, Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano and Stacey Pullen also regularly play his productions all around the planet.

NOTABLE TRACKS

In 2010 Guti moved to Düsseldorf to hunker down in the studio and concentrate on the Guti Techno and House project he was working on at the time. The result was remarkable; his stunning debut album Patio de Juegos released on Desolat blew everyone out of the water and really showed what he was capable of. Guti is also regularly releasing his music on labels like Supplement Facts, Crosstown Rebels, and Wolf and Lamb.

Guti is a trained musician/artist/DJ. He has been around the world and back and more importantly knows how to make people dance. Moving on to 2010, he was hailed to be in the Top 10 of Best Breakthrough DJs’ category by DJ Mag. He was even voted by both The Sun newspaper and Company Magazine as one of the Top 10 of Most Eligible Men in the UK. His productions have also been well-received from a wide range of DJs and radio stations, leading to hundreds of interviews worldwide in the past decade, including the BBC Radio 1 with Pete Tong, Judge Jules and the late John Peel.

You posted a Facebook post about reading about Ku De Ta in The Beat last week and we’re curious about that for obvious reasons, what was the story behind that? I was living in LA and the EDM thing was just about to hit. I got tapped up by William Morris to potentially be an agent as they were forming their electronic music dept. But the thought of pretending to like Eric Prydz was enough for me to know it was time to foxtrot oscar. My girlfriend, an Indonesian, who is now my wife, came back from a trip. Had a copy of The Beat. Saw Ku De Ta in there. Had heard the name. The rest was a case of luck and manifestation. Here I am. Ok, enough narcissism on our part, tell us about the last five years at Ku, what kind of changes have you seen? Well it was the Living Room or Ku back then. Different scene. It had a naivety and innocence. It’s more contrived now as a whole. If we could travel back in time five years ago and ask you where you’d be today, what would have said. Making music. Throwing parties. What advice would you give fiveyears-younger you?

Where do you see yourself in five years? Making music. More studio based. Tell us about how your musical style has changed in your five years at Ku? Went from predominantly making people dance. To more of a sunset vibe. It’s more cinematic. There is an opportunity at release or catharsis at sunset. It also exists when you make people dance. Where else have you been playing and do you have any ongoing project? Ongoing projects to help local bands and DJs move into becoming artists. Some of the local guys are really talented and I’d love to see them more at the beachside venues. Kids gotta be able to see the dream in motion.... Vegetarians and glutenfree diners have been catered to with the menu providing a number of different options, completed with their pizzas that can be made gluten-free. olden Lotus has been a landmark for Chinese food since way back in the day where it was especially notable for its Dim Sum Sundays. These days are no different with Golden Lotus still providing high quality family style Chinese cuisine in an excellent setting. The interior of the restaurant is opulent in a very Chinese way with gold trim and geometric angles that definitely lets the chi flow harmoniously. The feng shui is perpetuated by the large banquet tables. The high ceiling somehow manages to make the restaurant both grand and intimate at the same time which is no easy feat. Another feature of Golden Lotus is perhaps its most important, Chef Teng Seng Lee. Originally from Penang, Malaysia, Chef Lee has been cooking Chinese cuisine since 1993 starting off in his native land. He specializes in Cantonese and Szechuan styles and is a master in his own right. We started off with the Double Boiled Apple and Fish Soup with Chinese Herbs (55k). It was a slightly tangy soup that had a very herbal taste due to the ancho and tong sam herbs which purportedly promotes healthy skin. It also included chicken, dory fish, and apple which have it a very wholesome flavor.

Next up was the Deep Fried Fish Fillet with Pineapple Sauce (small 100k, medium 195k, large 290k) and the Fried Chicken with Satay Sauce (90k, 175k, 365k). The bite-sized fish was battered with a crunchy exterior and had tangy pineapple sauce drizzled on top which made it a fun dish. The chicken was served on a hot plate which kept it sizzling and the tender chunks had a nice peanut taste to them. But the grand act of this Chinese culinary opera had to be number 69 on the menu, the StirFried Pork Ribs Zhe Jiang Style (95k, 185k, 275k). These were cutlets of pork ribs that were both succulent and firm. The sauce was based on both plum sauce and chili which was finger licking good. If thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s anything equivalent to Chinese BBQ ribs, this is it. For desert, we had their signature Golden Lotus Chilled Mango Pudding (55k) which was deliciously moist with an amazingly creamy mango flavor. All in all, Golden Lotus is an excellent place to bring family and friends. Its comprehensive menu is ideal for sharing the tastes of China.

yoman Sujana Kenyem has known art ever since he could remember. Living a life in the silence of Ubud, his art has revolved around nature. He finds inspiration from the elements that create an environment, reflects it on himself, and translates it all in the words of painting. What themes do you pursue? After I graduated from university, my ideas were and still are about nature. The environment of where I live, as well as its culture. It all has been my inspiration. Until now, I’m still exploring what’s in the nature. It’s like, there is a mystery that I can’t solve yet. How has your art changed over the years? My earlier works were abstract. For my final project in university, I even took a fragile, old wall as the theme of my abstract works. I started this ‘style’ of painting in the 2000s, and took bamboo as the main object in my early series. How do you portray nature in your work? I always observe what’s in it, I make a reflection on myself, and I start to paint. My latest series contains a depiction of stone. I often see the stones as my place is very near the Ayung River. And what always comes to my mind afterward is their toughness. When they are hit by water, they don’t move and stand still. I then relate this to my own character, as I will be tough when I’m doing my passion. It’s not like, I merely paint the stones that I see,

but I reflect them on myself and interpret it on my canvas. In a nutshell, it’s always about the nature and myself. How about your technique and style? I did learn various techniques during my studies. But when I’m doing art, I never think about those techniques anymore. I create something I want to create, and I never think to follow particular style. I just create my art. And when someone asks me about my style, I can’t answer, because I’m not doing art because of a style. I do it out of an eagerness to translate and express what I have in mind. What is the characteristic of your work? It’s these small people that have to be on all my works. They are inspired from the leaves flying freely in the air. And why are they made small? I always imagine that humans are actually small in this world. Therefore, these small figures represent us, the humans. What is your current exhibition at Art Patio all about? The title is “Silence of Nature”. It’s actually my own examination on the natural phenomena that have occurred in the latest years. As an artist, I try to translate these phenomena through my works, reminding people about nature, to keep the elements building it. Overall, it’s all about a contemplation. An utilitarian spa located deep within the belly of the 1o1 Legian in Kuta.

Look: Going up the escalators into the lobby of the 101 has to be one of the more unique experiences at a Kuta hotel. Once youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re at the lobby, the spa is a quick stroll down the elevator where the Atma Spa is nestled. The spa is compact and efficient with a small reception and functional therapy rooms with subdued light. Feel: We chose their new Candle Oil Massage ($25) which consisted of using a self contained candle to pour the massage candle oil. When we saw the candle, we thought it looked like something kinky out of 50 Shades of Grey, but luckily for us, the heat was mild at most, but enough to make one flinch. The hot oil covered each section of the body right before a gentle massage that focused on pressure points and soothing rubbing. This was a very relaxing 90-minute massage and the oil, due to the high heat needed to liquefy it, had a very viscous feel to it.

Ingredients: The Yonka massage oil candle was the center of the treatment and had neroli, petitgrain and orange scents. It included shea butter to soften the skin, organic virgin sesame oil to rejuvenate and mango butter which acts as an anti oxidant. The oil was heated to a warm temperature which means that after the massage, it leaves a very smooth and viscous film over the skin. Magic: Atma spa has just about everything you need for a pint-sized hotel spa. One thing that was absolutely amazing was the lemon grass tea welcome drink, probably the most refreshing thing ever.
