Beer. The availability of beer has become an issue again. We’re not sure why though. As the governor of Jakarta, Ahok, recently pointed out beer doesn’t really hurt anyone, “nobody dies from it,” he said in the press. (Well, one doesn’t hear of many people dying from a beer overdose, do they? Maybe in a car but that’s not the point.) Okay, people get stupid sometimes while drunk, creating social problems etc but by making it more difficult to buy the humble beer won’t change any of that. It just makes the process more difficult – having to go down to the supermarket, buy more and stash it in the fridge for later. And it makes it illegal which creates its own set of issues. All those poor convenience stores and dudes on the beach with their coolers will be going out of business quick smart and once again personal liberties take a hit on the island. But anyway, scarier than that is the latest proposal being put forward to the central government from the non-drinking party to ban the sale of all alcohol over 1%. Now, isn’t that a real fancy idea. I could imagine all the tourists coming to Bali lazing by the pool with a mocktail in their hands and posting their Instagram pics saying how much fun they are having – hmmm more likely they will be doing it from Thailand or Fiji with a real one. Goodness, what are these government people thinking? Anyway, just like before it’s all likely to be more vote garnering and grandstanding for a deluded public far from here than reality and let’s hope it disappears as fast as it appeared again. Meanwhile the good times keep on rolling here on the island and the next two weeks again is a power house of top quality entertainment. International Yoga Day to be Inaugurated in Bali India has chosen Bali as the location of the world’s first International Yoga Day, to be held on Sunday, June 21. The day was proposed by the Indian prime minister to the United Nations with the goal being to promote universal aspiration of physical and mental wellbeing by way of practising yoga. The Consulate General of India, confirmed the day’s activities will commence at the Bajra Sandhi Monument located in Renon at 7am with an attempt at breaking the world’s largest practice of yoga. It is understood the event is to be coordinated with the Provincial Government and local yoga institutions. The day’s activities include tutorials by influential yoga practitioners and competitions for the best male and female yoga practitioners on the day with official schedules set to be released over the coming weeks.

As part of PrimaFit’s community engagement program, Fit for Charity was designed to get maximum collaboration with the enthusiasts. The idea was to run, bike and row, and collectively contribute to gather awareness as well as to raise funds. The proceeds would then be distributed to benefit the disabled athletes under Bali Sports Foundation. Fit for Charity kicked off on April 10, and was completed on April 12. During the event, a total of 1,237 kilometres was earned by all participants. Each kilometre was then converted into 25k by PrimaFit, resulted in a total of Rp 30,9325,000. In addition to the mileage and donation earned, PrimaFit also donated Rp 19,075,000, making a grand total of Rp 50,000,000 to be distributed for Bali Sports Foundation programs.

Patrick Hagenaar is a progressive house DJ hailing from the formidable lands of Holland. Back in 1999, Patrick moved to London to start off and spark some life into his DJ career – instantly catching the attention of clubbers and promoters by rocking the London club scene. In 2006 Pat’s work paid off as Ministry of Sound selected him as their Housexy tour resident DJ, taking him to every corner of the globe including Asia, China, Africa and America.

In September 2007, UK Mobile operator O2 asked Patrick to participate in a project that no DJ had ever done before. Patrick was the first DJ to mix a live DJ set on two mobile phones at Ministry of Sound (which you can watch on Youtube). True to his Dutch roots, he’s proud to cycle to all his London gigs and is particularly fond of ultra colorful pop art attire, making him one of the most easy-tospot characters in the club world. With gigs across the globe, a weekly worldwide radio show and DJ’s such as David Guetta, Axwell and Tiesto using his productions as their floor fillers, alongside chart topping productions, Patrick has got it going on.

Singapore’s Wayne Liu AKA DJ KoFlow is an artist in the true sense of the word. Having started off in the world of mixing and producing a bit later than others, Wayne has evolved into more than your regular everyday DJ but a marksman in his craft and into one of Asia’s most respected entertainers, and DJ KoFlow knows how to get the party started. He began DJing in competitions like the Singapore DMC Technics World DJ Championshpis and the Nike Street Style Awards. Later feeling like he could do this as a profession, Wayne started up DJ KoFlow and has been enjoying his past few years touring Asia and abroad ever since.

This table turner is constantly in high demand in Southeast Asia and has travelled from Laos and Australia to London and Taiwan and has effortlessly wowed every crowd he has played for.

Canadian DJ Max Graham started out as a cut and scratch DJ before he switched to a more trance and progressive house sound. He’s Canadian but was born in the UK and was brought up in Spain. He started DJing in 1986 at the age of 15. Graham was all about the scratch and loops you could do on older decks, but later around 1992, when electronic music was going big, Max was exposed to the sounds of house and progressive. He was inspired by people like Paul Oakenfold and Sasha and decided that he wanted to focus his musical attention on spreading those sounds all across Canada.

Though trance was spreading rapidly in Europe, only a few DJs were playing or sharing their sounds around Canada. It took a few years but Canadians caught on and in return transformed Graham into one of the busiest DJs hailing from there. Kinetic Records also took notice of Graham, giving him the helm for volume four of thier Tranceport series back in the day. A bit prior to the album’s release, Max started producing in a small studio, with three or four tracks appearing on dance music charts in the UK and Europe which launched Max into the international scene, touring Ibiza, London, NYC and a long stint in Southeast Asia. In 2008, Graham signed with Armada music and began his own compilation series called Cycles. Besides his compilations and massively popular radio shows and podcasts he continues to produce tracks, remix and tour the world extensively.

His progressive trance classic “Airtight” (2001) was a huge worldwide hit which was nominated for a Juno award in Canada. His monster 80s remix hit “Owner of a Lonely Heart” (2005) and his diverse artist album Radio (2010) along with other tracks like “Crank” and “I Know You’re Gone” got him a lot of rotation in the clubs. Max’s track “Sun in the Winter” made Van Buuren’s A State of Trance 2010 compilation.

This disc spinner/producer has never stuck to a single style of easily marketable music but prefers to follow his own path. At one of his sets you’ll hear house, trance, progressive and even techno but if you let go and trust this master DJ you’ll have the night of your life.

Hailing from Kent, Mark Knight made his first forays as a DJ playing at a nightclub in his hometown. In 2003, he debuted as a resident of Ministry of Sound in London. The Bintang singlet is the ubiquitous symbol of the sucker tourist on the island and as tempting it is to wear this vacation souvenir around, people will inevitably judge you. The Bintang singlet is akin to wearing a flag that says “rip me off”.
Ditch the other tourist garb
The Bintang singlet isn’t the only thing that’ll make you look like an easy dollar to most street peddlers and taxi drivers. A henna tattoo is another true mark of a tourist. Add some hair braids and you’re automatically spending double on anything without a fixed price. If you want to complete the tourist look, get yourself a pair of knock off Oakleys and anything with frangipani flowers on them.
Don’t converse between bikes
Believe it or not, you don’t have to have a conversation when you’re on separate bikes. Nothing is more obvious than people who have been riding motorbikes for a few days trying to keep a straight line and converse with each other. It’s pretty unsafe and unnerves more experienced drivers around you.
Don’t walk in tight groups
Nothing screams tourist harder than seeing a group of people shoulder to shoulder tightly in formation as if they were a school of sardines in a bait ball. It gives off a sense of uncertainty and insecurity that definitely radiates a fresh off the boat tourist vibe. Walk like this and taxis will be honking at you all night long.
Let go of the DSLR
Yeah, sure, some places definitely warrant some high quality professional images, but the shopping center probably isn’t one of them. When you see someone snapping with a huge telephoto at a restaurant, you can’t help but shake your head and sigh.
Warung etiquette
When there’s a long line at a warung (where food is displayed behind glass), know when it’s appropriate to ask about the food. When there’s a long line, asking the ingredients for every item as you mull over what your best options are can be infuriating to those waiting in line.
Learn a few indo words.
Indonesian is a really easy language and just making an effort goes a long way. Simple numbers and greetings make all the difference and definitely propels you from dumb tourist, to clued traveler.

nce upon a time, there was a little roadside warung in Ubud that sold the best pork ribs and most ridiculous martinis in the whole wide world. There was only one problem, what if you didn’t live in Ubud? Would you drive all the way there just to get your rib fix on? Thousands did, myself included, but that drive was just so damned inconvenient if you lived in… sayyyyy… Batu Belig. Happily, the gods saw fit to answer everyone’s prayers and Naughty Nuris Warung Batu Belig threw open its doors to offer the same winning combo of wicked ribs and brutal martinis. Almost five years later and the team down in Batu Belig have tweaked the formula to perfection, adding a bunch of new menu choices and wild cocktails, and to mark the occasion, it’s out with the old and in with the new name of Hog Wild in Bali. FOOD informal dining around large communal tables, with a ramshackle-chic ambience and the mouthwatering barbeque smell wafting around like smoky ambrosia. Having spent many a merry afternoon/evening round one of these tables, I can safely call myself a Hog Wild aficionado, but on this occasion I was keen to check out some of the new additions, so along with a few buddies (who needed very little persuasion to join), we got cracking with a round of the Hog Wild gin martinis, accompanied by the infamous Shake! Shake! Shake! Dance. Socks duly knocked off, we started off with the Crispy Shrimp Lumpia (45k++), Zingy Green Mango Salad (45k++) and a seemingly bottomless bowl of the Super Fresh Garden Salad (45k++). Served with a pot of gorgeously gloopy dippin’ sauce, the lumpia hardly touched the sides, while the two salads went down a treat – particularly the tangy shredded young mango tinged with just the right amount of chili. A round of super cold Bintangs provided the ideal interlude before the main event – namely a couple of full racks of Hog Wild in Bali’s infamous Pork Ribs (119k++), Beef Shish Kebab (135k++) and a cone of crunchy Sweet Potato Fries (28k++) to share out. Let me be clear about this, a rack of these babies smothered in the Hog Wild secret marinade and a squeeze of lime is literally one of the greatest earthly pleasures known to man. That said, the beef shish kebab ain’t far off either. With another round of martinis on the cards (this time with a lychee twist), we soldier on bravely into dessert territory, and have a go at the Pisang Goreng (fried bananas 40k++) and a doorstop-sized slice of the seasonal Passionfruit Cheesecake (35k++) – both of which do not fail to impress. As if all that wasn’t enough, Friday is Beef Rendang day, and Sunday is Babi Guling (suckling pig) day. Meanwhile, it’s happy hour every day between 5-7pm, with 15% off all alcoholic drinks. To Pimp A Butterfly There was a time when the South-central L.A. suburb of Compton was renowned for producing some of the greatest gangsta rap artists to ever emerge from the ‘hood. From the late 80s onwards, Compton gave us Dr. Dre, NWA, Eazy-E, Ice Cube just to name a few, but with the ushering in of more radio-friendly, watered down artists that glamourised the bling side of the business rather than the plight of marginalised black Americans, gradually its title as the hub city of real hiphop began to fade. Born in 1987, Kendrick Lamar was surrounded by the Compton sound from an early age – check out the artist as a toddler on the knee of a gang member on the cover of his groundbreaking 2010 major label debut Good Kid, Maad City – this guy is as authentic as they come; “And once upon a time, in a city so divine/Called West Side Compton, there stood a little n****/He was 5 foot somethin’, dazed and confused/ Talented but still under the neighbourhood ruse…” we’re
told on track six of follow-up To Pimp a Butterfly, as if we needed any more convincing that he’s the real deal, and here to put Compton back on the radar. With racial tensions across The States arguably at a new high in the wake of incidents like Ferguson and the Eric Garner shooting, the atmosphere is once again ripe for socially conscious, intelligent commentary from rappers, and there are none more so relevant right now than Mr. Lamar, who has managed to mix together a potent album brimming full of collective pent-up outrage - not only directed at the patriarchy of white American power structures, but also the sell-out homeboys who are more interested in schmoozing with the A-listers once they’ve sold a few million albums.
of losing touch with your roots on “Institutionalized” or the temptations of a groupie on “For Sale?”, but what is most surprising is the old school jazz vibe which runs thick through the album. There’s an exciting tension between his razor sharp observations and the kind of airy contemporary jazz on “These Walls”, or the momentary respite of “Alright” which features a no-doubt humbled Pharrell Williams. At times the blue note interludes and skittering lyrics sound almost like improv, but after a few listens it becomes clear that To Pimp a Butterfly is meticulously executed, even down to the posthumous 2Pac duet “Mortal Man” – a concept that no one else could have pulled off convincingly.
Vocally, TPaB is a schizophrenic ride through a series of Lamar’s different personas, addressing racial injustice on “The Blacker the Berry”, his own drunken insecurities on “u”, the pitfalls

resident of Sukawati, I Made Mahendra Mangku admits that art never actually ran in his family, and claims that while not being a priest, an inspirational life journey has taken him to reach where he is now.
Culture has a big influence. It’s different when I work in other places than Bali, as culture affects a lot. When I was in Yogyakarta, I never saw something so consistent. But in Bali, when I am doing ngayah (helping out with a religious activity), I sometimes find some cultural conflicts that are irrelevant with my own condition. That’s what I express through my work. In terms of colors, it can’t be denied as well. In Bali, these colors, intentionally or not, have a strong influence. The festivity of colors in Bali makes a rich element in a work.
I Made Mahendra Mangku
Tell us a bit about yourself. My name was originally I Made Mahendra, while the ‘Mangku’ was given by my schoolmates during our first year at the Batu Bulan High School of Arts. It was because I did watercolor paintings and splattered the colors, my friends told me that I was acting like a mangku (Balinese priest). Since then, people call me Mangku. How did your interest in art start? I had a relative in Ubud. When I was in the second year of elementary school, he brought me to visit Museum Puri Lukisan. That’s where I fell in love. In my fourth year, I started to learn drawing from a teacher. When I was in the final year of elementary school, I worked to design dance costumes in order to continue my study. When I entered high school, I thought I didn’t want to be a ‘laborer’ forever; I want to be an artist. I decided to stop working the next year and made my own income through paintings which I would sell to galleries.
What can you say about your works? Many people say that my works are poetic. Indirectly, I want all colors to be displayed. Although I often tell myself to use one color, but still, I also can’t avoid and escape that feeling to use more colors. That’s why people say I can’t make hideous works, with the dark colors like black or brown. And even when I use black, my works will still look sweet. Maybe that’s my character. I can’t deny it and it appears that way.
Did you start off painting abstract art? I didn’t. I started off working on naturalism, realism and figurative painting. I totally put my focus on abstract art when I was on my third semester at Institute of Arts in Yogyakarta, after a suggestion from lecturer who told me that I have more potential on color and line. That was in 1994.
One last question, what does abstract art mean for you? In the abstract scene, you know the destination but you don’t know which road to use to reach it. It’s an adventure, and what I love from an adventure is the journey. It always makes you feel amazed when you finally reach the final destination, and that’s what makes abstract art so interesting. That’s why in doing abstract art, the hardest part is to decide when and where to stop. It needs courage to stop.

This spa is a great recommendation for a day of pampering in Seminyak.
Look: From the waiting room, guests will be led to the therapy area through a dark hallway that is decorated with bamboo stems as well as LED lights on the floor giving soft illumination. The first floor consists of a cozy corner for a footbath, and a treatment room with calming blue lighting features massage tables. The second floor of the building is a brighter therapy space with bamboo walls and a soaring ceiling that gives natural lighting as well as airflow. Feel: We chose the “Body Massage” treatment which lasts 60 minutes and is priced at 165k. The treatment started off with a footbath, where we had our feet warmed as well as a gentle and smooth massage. Containing a great combination of shiatsu and Balinese techniques, this massage was started with deep hand pressure applied to particular points on our dry back which was then continued with some lengthy strokes and kneads after the massage oil had been applied. Same techniques were also used continuously on our legs and hands. Then it was turn for the signature ‘cool service’ to take over. We had our eyes covered with a cold towel and neck placed on a hot stone while the therapist continued the treatment working the strokes and kneads to relax the nervous system in our shoulders, neck and head. Once it was done, the therapist ended the session by wiping off our body to remove the excess massage oil.
