SCOOP Bali Tourism Areas to be Exempt from Alcohol Ban According to reports, a total of 16 tourism regions in Bali are to be exempted from the central government policy banning the circulation and distribution of alcoholic beverages (Mikol) to certain retailers. “Mikol sales cannot be done haphazardly in all places,” said Bali Governor I Made Pastika, admitting that the tourism sector on the island relies heavily on the availability of alcohol. To that end, the former Bali police chief said he would work to draw up local regulations in accordance with the new technical guidelines that have been issued, particularly protecting traditional alcoholic beverage production enterprises which have already become the livelihoods of many people in Bali.

SCOOP Nepal Earthquake Relief If you have seen the news, you can’t miss the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal and has killed over 7000 people so far. If you’re wondering how you can help, there’s a Facebook group for Bali residents to coordinate efforts for aid in Nepal. Go to Facebook and look up “Indonesia for Nepal Earthquake Relief Network”. There’s also news of missing Indonesians in Nepal as well as general information sharing in the group.
New Toll Road Planned State-owned construction company Waskita Karya has announced that it is finalizing plans for 125-kilometer toll road connecting Kuta to Lovina. The company is currently negotiating with municipal, district and provincial authorities regarding the project, and that the company was planning on completing the road in four stages. The first stage will connect Kuta, Canggu, Tanah Lot and Soka, which is measured about 25.7 kilometers. Waskita Karya also received a Rp. 3.5 trillion capital injection from the government recently, as part of Jokowi’s effort to boost state-owned enterprise participation in the speeding up of infrastructure development. The company will use these funds for the 125-kilometer Kuta-Lovina project as well as several others around Indonesia.

Secret Cinema, AKA Jeroen Verheij and Grooveyard is one of the best techno DJs around the Netherlands and the world. Since the early 90s, his unwavering passion and enthusiasm drove him to higher echelons in the DJ universe. With more than 20 years behind him in and out of clubs and festivals, Secret Cinema is highly regarded as a precious gem in the techno world. Verheij started producing as Meng Syndicate in 1990. His first release “Sonar System” was an instant rave classic and caught the ears of Michel de Hey, who invited Jeroen to release some tracks on Immaculate Music. By 1994, Secret Cinema was born and was ready to show the world what he could really do.

Jeroen has been playing live since 1993, but when Secret Cinema’s ‘Volt!’ came out in 2000, it was the start of Jeroen’s new and restyled energetic live set. A more techno-orientated Secret Cinema only set, different from his former live-sets, which combined Grooveyard and Secret Cinema songs. After that, Jeroen released his first album in 2001 under the name of Secret Cinema, White Men Can’t Funk which was an anthem in many European clubs around that time. In 2009, after 16 years of releasing on Michel de Hey’s imprints, Verheij started to shop around for new labels that could accommodate more growth for the Secret Cinema brand. Cocoon Recordings picked up ‘Kurzweil’ and spawned one of Secret Cinema’s biggest hits which was soon followed up by the even bigger “Jazz Me” EP from which “Shake Ur TechAss” presided at the pole position of the Beatport techno charts for weeks. New collaborations with artists such as Ramon Tapia, Psycatron, Christian Smith and Slam have been resulting in interesting projects and many weeks in the charts. Secret Cinema is rapidly becoming one of the most popular names in quality techno!

The year 2001 saw the international breakthrough for Secret Cinema with the release of SC002, a very techno orientated project extracted from his live-set including the track ‘Carton Clip’, is album White Men Can’t Funk and subsequently his debut live performances in Ireland, Italy and Japan (WIRE festival 2001). Further development into the Secret Cinema project has made the new album Skunk & Espresso a favourite amongst all the ‘big name’ DJs around the world, from house to techno, from minimal to trance. The album consists of three vinyl’s and a mixed CD, all written and produced by Jeroen Verheij.

Born into a family of famed Indonesian musicians, Al Ghazali has been around music since he was a child. He began playing musical instruments since he was in elementary school, and started his musical career with his brothers in a band named Lucky Laki in 2009. His love for dance music was discovered after he saw his mother playing with her turntables. Motivated by his mother and the beats, he then learned to work the turntables. Now, besides being a guitarist and singer, Al also focuses on his new career as a DJ.

Riri Mestica was born and raised in Jakarta and started his musical journey as a guitarist. At the age of 17, he moved to Europe, where he continued his exploration of music in a small bar in Montreux, Switzerland, “Mayfair Café”. After a few years shaping his DJ techniques, in 2000, he arrived back to Jakarta to explore the Indonesian music scene that he hadn’t really experienced till then. It took only three months until Riri Mestica got involved in a brand new club called Retro. Together with his fellow DJ buddy, Romy, they made Retro the busiest club in town for many years.

Riri is regularly flying around major cities in Indonesia and abroad, giving everyone he plays for a full on show that you are bound to remember for a long time to come. He’s DJ’d alongside the likes of Sasha, Nick Warren, Fedde Le Grand, Slacker, Stephan K, James Lavelle, Ashley Caselle, Harry Lemon and many more. But his achievements don’t end with associations with big DJs. In 2007 he was crowned No.1 DJ in Indonesia at the Paranoia Awards and won the AMI Award for the best Dance Track for ‘Fadeaway’. Accompanying another award for Best Live PA of the year 2007 and In 2009, was chosen for the second time to be the only Indonesian performer at the Singapore F1 Fuel Party.

Stanton Warriors are an English DJ duo consisting of Dominic Butler and Mark Yardley. They met at the seminal garage label Tuff Jam where Dominic was in the A&R department and Mark was a studio hand. Both were natives of West Country in England and getting increasingly sick of contributing great work to other artists. They combined resources and recorded a pair of singles titled “What You Gonna Do” and “Determined”, fusing the freedom and flair of two-step with the sweet flow of nu-house disco breaks. They found their name through a manhole cover, made by Stanton Ironworks, which seemed fitting with their style of underground, cutting edge music.

Formed in 1996, Ungu had to wait until 2002 for their first studio album to be released. Their current formation compromises of Pasha on vocal, Makki on bass, Enda and Cion on guitars, and Rowman behind the drums. Ungu is an Indonesian word which means purple, implying an amalgamation of the diverse talents that each member contributes to the band. Makki, for instance, was playing music in the US for some time, and even opened for John Mellencamp once before co-founding Ungu in Jakarta. Meanwhile the front man Pasha, had a brief stint as a model and TV actor before joining the band in 1998. The rest of the current line-up were either playing for other outfits or working as technicians for other bands.

At MTV Indonesia Awards in 2006, Ungu was nominated in three categories, Most Favorite Group/Band/Duo, Best Director and Video of the Year for “Demi Waktu”. Supported by A Mild Live Productions and Trinity Optima Production, they released a biography titled A Mild Live: Ungu Book Magazine which was launched in 2007. Still in the same year, the band was also dubbed ‘a rising star’ by reputable Indonesian music organizers such as Soundrenaline, A Mild Live Productions and Deteksi Productions, as well as the Indonesian label Musica Studio.

Ungu’s first hit came after they dropped their debut album titled Laguku. The first single from that album called “Bayang Semu” was picked to be on the soundtrack of an Indonesian soap opera titled ABG, and also certified platinum two years later. Their sophomore album titled Tempat Terindah fared even better with 80,000 copies sold within four months, while their third album Melayang was certified double platinum. In 2007, they released the fourth album named Untukmu Selamanya in four countries including Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. Aeroplane is a solo DJ consisting of Vito de Luca in the pilot seat. Vito de Luca was born in Belgium to Italian parents. De Luca used to own a record store when he was 19 years old, which in a way helped to develop his eclectic taste of music and incorporate it in his tracks under the guidance of his mother’s brother, who is a DJ too. The Italian-Belgian producer and DJ created Aeroplane together with his Italian buddy, Stephen Fasano in 2007 after meeting him in 2001. However, the latter chose to focus on his own project and amicably left de Luca to be the sole man in the cockpit in 2010.

“We’ve been put in the dance music category but I’m a songwriter, that’s what I know how to do.” Aeroplane has never been at the mercy of traditional BPMs, and being free of “the dance floor pressure” has given Vito additional license to slow things down and look around. “I’m at my best at 105bpm,” he says. “That’s the speed where I make the best music. You can do more, there’s more groove, more feeling.” His very notable remix of the Friendly Fires’ “Paris” featuring Au Revoir Simone is something you’ve probably heard without knowing that you have. If you’ve been to the W at all, you may notice it playing as it’s in constant rotation in their Symmetry album all across their hotels worldwide.

Aeroplane’s first album was We Can’t Fly (co-produced by a French producer – Bertrand Burgalat), alluded to French dance music and was released in September 2010 under the UK Wall of Sound label. Some of the most famous singles in it are “Mountains of Moscow”, “London Bridge” and “The Point of No Return”. With a ton of entrepreneurial genius and a fair bit of hard work, Nadiem Makarim is changing the way we move ourselves and goods around this island. Founded in Jakarta, Go-Jek is a courier service that has now expanded to Bali. Get the Go-Jek app on your smart phone and give it a run.
Hi Nadiem, tell us about yourself. Start from the minute you were conceived and end it with yesterday. It began with elementary school in Jakarta, then high school in Singapore at an international boarding school before going to college at Brown. Then I worked at McKinsey for three years before getting an MBA at Harvard Business School. I was also managing director of Zalora Indonesia, chief innovation officer at Kartuku, then joined Go-Jek fulltime in 2014 and took it online baby!

Ok, so Go-Jek, how was that conceived? It started as a business school project on the side. I started the business because I really needed it in Jakarta. With traffic becoming untenable, I needed a multipurpose application to handle all my transport and logistics needs. There was a huge supply pool of ojeks in Jakarta that were underutilized, since they only got bookings during peak hours. I wanted to fully utilize them throughout the day so that they could earn more money and be multidimensional helpers for urban folk. Now GoJek drivers are drivers, couriers, and personal shoppers all in one.
FEATURE What were some of the challenges of putting it all together? Teaching a person who has never owned a smart phone before how to use an app as their primary source of income is a huge challenge. We were very lucky to have a huge spirit of solidarity in the family, which led to younger drivers teaching older drivers how to use the app. Once they are in the network, getting them used to performing multi-purpose tasks is another challenge. We have new products and features we are launching all the time, and this can be overwhelming to drivers. How exactly does Go-Jek work? Very simple, the mobile app behaves like a dispatcher for our drivers. They receive bids in their app that they can choose to accept or reject. It is completely up to them. All bids are location based, so that the driver who accepts will most likely be five minutes away from the pickup point. If there was moment in the history of Go-Jek where in retrospect, you were like, “damn I messed that up”? What moment would that be? It was probably six months after finally joining Go-Jek, I realized how big this company could have been if I had started just one year earlier. But we can’t live life concerned about “what ifs”. It was an “aha” moment for me to double down and scale as fast as humanly possible. And you’re “damn, I’m so winning” moment? It’s so important to have many small “winning” moments to get the team excited. We are lucky enough to have several. Getting invited to meet the governor, Ahok, and receiving praise from him was definitely one of them. We’ve won multiple awards, but the best validation has always been either customer or driver comments. Case in point, one of my drivers recognized me from TV and told me, “Since I joined Go-Jek, my six-year-old boy keeps asking me why my wife’s cooking is so much more delicious than before.” Those are the moments that remind us why we do what we do....
What do you reckon is the weirdest/most notable thing ever delivered by a Go Jek driver? Hands down a boa constrictor back in the day, we immediately revised our terms and conditions to not allow any animals. I know you’re a music guy, so if Go-Jek had a soundtrack, what would the first three tracks be? • Little Eva - “The Locomotion” • Flo Rida - “Ridin’ Dirty” • War - “Low Rider” Why are you far more superior to Uber? Hehe, I don’t think we are superior to Uber. We aspire to reach their technology. But I think we are global pioneers in marrying the “shared economy” with “e-commerce”. There are companies that do each one of our verticals really well (transport, courier, food delivery, grocery delivery), but nobody merges it into a single platform effectively. I believe our model is the future of both logistics and personal shopping. How will Go-Jek bring world peace and harmony to the world? Or a dystopian future where I, for one, will welcome our Go-Jek overlords? Go-Jek is a perfect example of how tech is having social impact by shifting power back to service providers. By multiplying the income of our drivers we are helping all sides of the platform in a powerful way. Go-Jek has already proven that we can “free” an entire informal sector from being a marginalized group to being a high value player in the lives of urban folk. As we build out new products and verticals, we plan to “free” many sectors from “middle man” institutions and transfer value to the people who are actually providing the services to the customers. We see a world where the majority of money goes to the people who do the actual work, not some intermediary. That’s how we’ll change the game forever.

FOOD Walking out onto the breezy rooftop, it’s easy to slide into relax mode and get comfy on one of the low-slung loungers - a cocktail or two also never hurts in that situation, and so my buddy and I order up a couple of Dragonflies (50k) delicious little muddles of dragonfruit, Bacardi, vodka and soda that hit the spot nicely. After a decent stint soaking up the sun, we amble back inside, grab a sofa and get stuck into the crowd-pleasing menu, which features a well-rounded mix of small bites, snacks, hot & cold tapas and larger plates if you’re proper peckish. First up to start off I go for a Seafood Sambal Matah (60k) – lemongrass skewered prawns and soft chunks of squid complimented by a zesty raw sambalchilli sauce. Meanwhile, my friend goes for the Beef Chilli Lime (60k), which features tender shredded beef with a salad of crunchy onions and young mango on a potato rosti, trussed upin a hot and sour chilli sauce. Moving on to mains territory, we order up two of Above’s newest menu additions – namely the Roasted Chicken (120k) and the Beef Tenderloin (130k). Cooked to medium rare
perfection, the imported steak could almost be cut with the side of a fork and ticks all the right boxes about how a steak should be. For the roasted chicken, let it be known, these guys are not messing about – you get a whole roasted chicken with your beans ‘n’ mash. Not some sparrow-sized foul either, this is a serious portion of plump, juicy chicken, and could easily be shared between two. Hint – ask for more of the deliciously smoky gravy, trust me you’ll need it. A Chocolate Fondant (40k) and a slice of the classic Tiramisu (50k) round things off nicely – I actually surprise myself that I have any room left, but the warm gooey chocolaty loveliness on top of crumbly biscuit with cream and sugar snap wafer is impossible not to finish. Unlike the regular, minimalist sashimi platter, the Hamachi Kingfish Sashimi is not only a treat for the taste buds, but also for the eyes. Coming out sublimely, this dish consists of three cuts of yellowtail kingfish which have a clear and sweet aftertaste, accompanied with a bold taste of the flesh. Sleeping Operator
There’s a familiarity about the Barr Brothers that is hard to put your finger on, but I suspect it has something to do with writing the kind of universally appealing folk-rock that has come to constitute what is known as ‘Americana’. Originally from Boston, brothers Andrew and Brad Barr stumbled into Montreal some time in 2003 and never left, recruiting native harpist Sarah Paige and multi-instrumentalist Andres Vial to quietly form The Barr Brothers. Some time passed, during which the foursome honed their skills playing anything and everything, literally, but despite the use of numerous, inventive home made instruments (cardboardium, anyone?), the general sound on their 2011 self-titled debut LP was one of restrained folk, so carefully crafted and inoffensive you wouldn’t be surprised to hear it wafting through the speakers at your local Starbucks. Follow-up Sleeping Operator builds on the same values as the Barrs’ debut, but has a much more polished feel to it, with exceptionally wellbalanced production that never allows Brad Barr’s soft vocal narratives to get lost under the music. Despite its density, these are simply presented songs with no pretentions. That’s not to say the album doesn’t constantly surprise and delight – despite its humble beginnings, “Come

in the Water” unfolds into a magic ride of sunkissed fuzz guitar and harp flourishes, and the acoustic campfire loveliness of standout track “Even the Darkness Has Arms” just makes you want to go and hug the nearest stranger. With all the slick production and expertly crafted songs, rarely do the band sound spontaneous (slide blues number “Half Crazy” being one of the only exceptions), but that’s not the point – the 13 tracks of Sleeping Operator were carefully distilled down from some 40, and consequently after a couple of listens you’ll be singling along with most of the choruses. Only on a couple of occasions (“How the Heroine Dies”, “Please Let Me Let it Go”) might you find yourself skipping forward, but given the quality of everything else these momentary lulls are easily forgotten. The wacky instrument box is still being plundered but you won’t even notice most of the time, with lilting steel guitars, acoustic flourishes and languid drums giving the most lasting impression – best exemplified on joyful opener “Love Ain’t Enough”, and “Wolves”, perhaps the most ‘country’ of all the offerings here. Although it’s hard to get too worked up about Sleeping Operator and it’s middling folk-rock, you’ll struggle to find a better soundtrack for a Sunday morning lie in. Dan Ashcroft.

The Art auXion is a collective that consists of extraordinary artists and collectors who have combined their talents, knowledge and energy to put together a collection of arts from Bali, Indonesia and the rest of the world. Now – May 14 Ganesha Gallery Teguh Ritma Iman presents his works of art in an exhibition themed “Women in Life”. Admiring the strength of women, the artist take them as never-ending inspiration for his works. This inspiration evolves to include other aspects of nature, the environment and the intimate relationship between women, mothers and their children. His figurative paintings are primarily composed of strong blocks of bright colors and executed in a decorative, expressionistic style. There are also several delicate and intricate batik patterns depicted on clothing of many of the figures within his work, while additionally, his paintings succeed in instilling curiosity in the viewer. Now – May 21 Positive Negative Gallery Announcing the addition of Tracy Hamer to its roster of artists, Positive Negative Visual Gallery now returns to present its “Artist by Invitation” project. Tracy’s art is mostly figurative, isolating specific aspects of the human figure, exploring themes of isolation, anonymity and depersonalization. Now – May 17 Pullman Bali Legian Nirwana Following in step with its global commitment to contemporary art, Pullman Bali Legian Nirwana is holding an exhibition by I Made Mahendra Mangku titled “Interior Journey”. Collaborating with Tonyraka Art Gallery, this exhibition marks the sixth art event by the resort, presenting 38 abstract works by the Balinese artist. The works exhibited are concluded as an act of painting that reflects the artist’s interior journey. From one point of departure on a piece of canvas or paper, he begins his journey on the world of lines and colors. Now – May 23 Shankara Art Space Made Kenak Dwi Adnyana, Tien Hong, Komang Trisno Adi Wirawan, Kadek Darma Negara and Ketut Agus Murdika are young Balinese painters whom the creative processes are linked similarly into the language of visual abstract. Possessing the same art language, the painters showcase their works in a thematic frame themed “Meraba Angin”, displaying a common thread which takes the wind as a concept. For these young painters, wind is a stimulus that evoke their creative processes, and has diverse layers of meaning. The wind can be translated personally according to each individual. Integrity Now – June 19 Griya Santrian Gallery Griya Santrian Gallery hosts an exhibition by Balinese artist Wayan Arnata. In this exhibition, the artists has broken through the conventional world, building his own structure in creating art. His totality brings him out to breach the barriers of medium, dimension, technique and idea. He presents a new perspective by showing the charisma of his grandfather who was an expert in creating various elements and symbols as a part of traditional ceremony. The artist focuses on creating collage with a strong hint of traditional technique, exploring wood, yarn, mirror and canvas, or any medium that can represent his feeling. In short, this exhibition is an interpretation that unites modernity with the roots of tradition.
Kayun Ati May 11 – 17 Bentara Budaya Bali Bentara Budaya Bali presents 19 artists from Komunitas Lempuyang in an exhibition titled “Kayun Ati”. Through the two-dimensional works and installations exhibited, it mirrors the effort to make art knowledge and art awareness, from the process of appreciation to expression. This exhibition also marks the effort of the artists, who are from Karangasem, in interpreting the land of their birth. urrently residing in Bali, the Dutch artist has lived and worked across Southeast Asia over the past years. She began her creative career as a graphic and product designer, and later decided to focus her energy on the creation of art. A little fact: she loves street art. You were a graphic designer before. Why did you decide to stop and focus on art? I want to be able to reach more people in their personal space by expressing my self through art and lifting up their daily lives. If they can look and experience my art more often, I hope to stimulate people to step out of the ordinary into dream worlds. Even if it is only for a couple of minutes per day, I believe it will eventually increase the quality of life, because dreams and happy feelings are the powerful tool to create changes you would like to see. You have been living in countries that have diverse and rich cultures. How far has the cultural aspect of these countries influenced your work? A lot! I have a painting series called the “World of Weast” which is a direct result of living in different parts of the world. This series is about the West and the East, combining the best parts of different worlds and integrating it into a whole. The viewer might not even be aware that different parts are integrated. I think we should live like that; letting go of the ridged views on life as they are all just perceptions resulting from where you were born and raised.
What is the signature or strong character in your art? The combination and balance of colors. Next to that I often use colorful printed paper which I mostly design myself. People say my art is very recognizable. I understand you are currently active working and exhibiting with the Art auXion. Can you tell us something about this collective? Well, to start, we have changed the name into View from a Cloud, as we feel that the art auXion is too limited in what we do. View from a Cloud is a unique and novel conception of the 21st century’s art gallery, a virtual gallery which represents artists from all over the globe and reveals the work in the carefully-chosen spaces around the world. Based in Bali, View from a Cloud is dedicated to exploring, collaborating with, and revealing some of the most-talented artists worldwide, with a particular focus on local talents. We organize accessible events in Asia, by putting these creative and stimulating pieces on display, using all creative tools and media possible to increase visibility. Can you talk us through how you work? Like, how is your working process going to be like? Images often start to appear in my head, or I see things that just start to inspire me, frequently when I am on my motorbike. Then, I try to translate it on canvas, and a new series is born. Ashoka Spa Look: Tucked in the rear area of Bali Dynasty Resort, Ashoka Spa makes an apt destination for those looking for a total rejuvenation experience. Its two-story building is earthy, surrounded by lush gardens and fenced with fish ponds on its sides. Going inside, there is a welcoming reception area furnished with comfy couches and three armchairs for manicures and pedicures, while its ceiling has a contemporary touch of decorative bamboo stems that add natural beauty. The treatment rooms are cozy spaces for relaxing treatments, festooned with wooden furniture and stone walls, and completed with a private garden that would bring mind deeper into serenity.
Feel: We opted for their “Stone Massage” (450k) and “Eye Treatment” (150k) which are done in a total of 120 minutes and believed to give a deeper relaxation and provide a fresh, uplifted appearance. The treatment started off with a footbath with a peppermint spray and an antiseptic to finish, which also helped us to feel more relaxed before going through the treatment. Moving to the “Stone Massage” treatment, we were then asked to lay on the bed faced down, while some warm basalt stones were placed at the key points on our back. The massage itself was done with Balinese techniques before the stones took over, with its warmth and pressure spread throughout the body starting from the legs, up to the neck and shoulder. Facing up, the same technique was applied, but reversed starting from the neck and shoulder, down to hands and legs. After 90 minutes, the treatment then moved to the second session which was the “Eye Treatment”. This session was started with face cleansing and toning, followed with a gentle massage on the face, as well as a deeper technique focusing around the eyes. We were then pleased to shower after all sessions were completed, while a cup of ginger tea was also served to give us the final comfort.
