SCOOP 4G Gets a Boost in Kuta Telkomsel claims to have provided 50,000 customers with 4G internet connections in Bali so far, but according to the sales manager for Telkomsel Bali, Ihsan, that figure will be boosted soon. “We’ve built 167 4G base stations in Denpasar and Badung, so that customers really feel comfortable with our 4G services,” said Ihsan. This was announced at the opening of a smartphone bazaar at the Grapari Telkomsel store on Sunset Road. The bazaar was held in order to educate the public that to enjoy 4G services doesn’t mean they have to use expensive mobile phones. 4G LTE smartphone packages from brands like brand Sony, Asus, and Xiaomi were available at affordable prices. According to Ihsan, although the number of new customers currently using 4G is around 50,000 people out of a total of about three million Telkomsel subscribers in Bali, he is optimistic the number of users will increase fast.

SCOOP Sanur Village Festival to be Held at the End of August The tenth annual Sanur Village Festival (SVF) is to be held from August 26 to 30 with the theme “decade” at Segara Beach in Sanur. As always, the SVF will present a huge variety of activities including exhibitions, culinary, art and photography, fun activities and sports, as well as arts and cultural dialogue. Additionally, the SanuRun event will take place on August 23 to tie in with the festival activities, featuring 3 categories: 10K, 5K and the kid’s dash. During the festival, the environment program includes beach clean-ups, the release of turtle hatchlings, and the planting of coral reef. Art and photography events include on the spot painting, body painting and art for the public, and a photo contest and exhibition. Fun and Sport activities include international kite festival, fun games, boats parade, fishing competition, surfing, yoga and village cycling tour. ‘Face of Diversity’ at Balinale Film Fest The Balinale announced that South Kuta Beach Business Association (SKBBA) will be their Hosting Partner for the film festival held this year from 24 -30 Sept. Kraak & Smaak are a supersonic production/DJ trio that consist of Oscar de Jong, Mark Kneppers and Wim Plug. They all hail from a little town in the Netherlands called Leiden and have been producing music for about a decade. Initially starting off as a live band that was put together solely as a one-off promotional tool for their first album Boogie Angst that they were premiering in Amsterdam. The band ended up impressing people so much that they decided to embark on a follow up by organizing a club tour around the Netherlands, and that’s where the fun began. Their set-up, combining the fat club sound with live musicians and male and female vocalists, turned out to be a totally unheard of musical phenomenon in the Dutch party world, leading to invitations to play at some of Holland’s biggest festivals like Pinkpop.

What are the highlights for you at Ku De Ta this high season?

I would have to say that this year’s White Party which will feature some of the best DJs from around the world. Steampunk is a creative theme and that will see some of Bali’s best costumes come out of the closet. Of course our annual Bikini Party (last week) and Old School Block are other highlights of this summer that will see more of a live element introduced into the musical mix.

Some people like the Bikini Party more, others The White Party. What’s your favorite and why?

To be honest, my favourite would be the Old School Block Party. The entire month of August is filled with all venues playing dance orientated music and that gets a bit much when that’s all you’ve been listening to. The Block Party takes a turn for the better with the music direction geared towards old school funk and hip hop. It’s a welcomed change after all of these dance parties.

Ku De Ta has been putting on the biggest parties in Bali for years. Great stage set ups, the best sound systems, and amazing world class dance and stage performances that make the Ku parties the pick of the bunch for the higher end crowd every year. Is it a challenge to keep on coming up with something better than the year before or does it all just happens naturally?

It’s always a challenge. We have a solid team here at Ku De Ta and everyone brings an idea

to the table. It’s an “open door policy” when it comes to these parties. We spend months and months putting together these events, not to mention the endless number of meetings with suppliers and entertainers from around the globe. Miss Nine

Miss Nine has been spinning her wears in the electronic music world for years now. Born in Germany, but beginning to DJ in Amsterdam, she has opened for big players like Avicii, Tiesto, Deep Dish, David Guetta, John Digweed, Nick Warren and Dave Seaman. Miss Nine has come a very long way since those days and has certainly made a massive name for herself. The guest DJ for globally renowned clubs like Privilege in Ibiza, London’s Minstry of Sound and the main stage of Sunburn Festival on India and Miami’s Ultra Music Festival has got a busy schedule ranging from all those parties to modeling for brands including Levi’s and Dolce & Gabbana, to starting her own label 925 Music, as well as being an ambassador to the charity organization, Plan Netherlands. It can be very tiring with all the traveling through different time zones in a short period of time with little sleep. Some of the family birthdays or special occasions you can’t attend because you are traveling somewhere on the other side of the world. Collecting can be an addiction like having to be always up to date with the latest software, new plugins and hardware gear.

Where in the world are you and what can you see outside your closest window?

I’m currently in St Tropez for some days where I played at a private event last night. The weather is amazing, very sunny and when I look out of my window I see a swimming pool, palm trees and the sea with boats in the water.

What got you into DJing?

The record Daft Punk – “One More Time”. When I listened to this track I was dancing in my living room all day long. I like how the DJ in a club takes the crowd on a journey through the night with the music, brings a smile to peoples’ faces and can give them an unforgettable night.

If you weren’t a DJ how do you think you would be spending your time?

I always wanted to be a professional athlete when I was little. It’s hard to say as you can do so many things these days. I love to be around and work with people. I would say I would do something creative in fashion, travel, music or lifestyle as I love to come up with new ideas and projects and work them out.

How about your name, Miss Nine, is there a meaning behind that?

Nine is my nickname. Spoken Ni(e)ne. I was born March 9 and 9 is a lucky number.

Do you have any tracks that are mainstay/mustplays in your set? If so, what are they? or do you mix it up every time?

I would say “Summer from Calvin Harris” a great track to put a smile on people faces. I made a mashup with a big festival drop which you can find on my soundcloud.com/missnine together with other mashups/bootlegs I play during my sets.

What are the pros and cons of being a world renowned DJ? Over the years DJs have been responsible for new musical directions, advances in technology, fashion trends, and dance movements, among other things. They are in a position to enrich culture on a number of levels, and are in no danger of fading away. You are traveling the world and get to know different cultures from another side, in comparison to visiting the country as a tourist. You have access to lots of

You have been in and out of Indonesia’s nightlife scene for a while. How do you rate it?

It’s always amazing. I did a two week tour a while ago. I visited many cities I had never heard about and the feedback has been amazing, the scene in Indonesia is growing. It’s really nice to see and hear that people are open for new music and share it. I’m very much looking forward to return to Jakarta and Bali in August.

This is a must during my big Asia tour at least once a year.

ost beach clubs around town are pretty content with a swimming pool and a bit of beach to keep the punters happy, but Surf & Turf at Nusa Dua has really upped the ante, with a surf flowrider and waterslides at their beachfront venue.

Overlooking the tranquil lagoon of Mushroom Rock beach, Surf & Turf’s flowrider is the first of its kind in Bali, meaning kids and grown ups alike can hone their skills on the standing wave. FOOD Away from the pool, slides and flowrider, Surf & Turf is a casual beach club venue, with comfy seating options spread over both levels of the two-storey building. Open daily from 9am-9pm for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you could easily lounge away the whole day here, with the options for canoe and bike rentals meaning you can base yourself here and head out exploring on both land and water. Sooner or later the menu will lure you back though, with it’s stellar selection of Western and local dishes to suit everyone’s taste.

Arriving shortly after breakfast, but still outside the realm of lunch, a couple of mates and I find ourselves a spot near the bar. Since this is a family restaurant road test we have kids in tow – all of whom immediately tear off to the flowrider and are barely seen again until we leave hours later, save to periodically return for a slurp of their sodas (Sparkling Green & Red – 35k++) and smoothies (Surfer Tonic - 45k++).

Perfecto. Since it’s officially brunch time, we do what all sensible adults do at 11.30am and order up a round of Bloody Marys, which, as it turns out is the Surf & Turf cocktail of the month at just 95k++ a go. Pleased at how well the day is going by this point, we get stuck right into the menu, and order up a serving of the Mushroom Napoleon (65k++), and a good old Greek Salad (70k++) to share, with another round of the Baked Bloody Marys thrown in for good measure.

For the main event, it’s all about the Beef Rendang (80k++) for me. Plucked from the local specialities section, it’s everything a good rendang should be, with soft chunks of slow-cooked beef swimming in that famous Sumatran sauce. Meanwhile, the others check out Surf & Turf’s top-notch tenderloin (245++), and the crowd-pleasing Crispy Salmon (140k++).

Like bees around a honeypot, the kids come charging back over at the slightest whiff of our Warm Chocolate Fondant (60k++) and Vanilla Pannacotta (70k++). On the drinks front, we instruct our waitress ‘keep ‘em bloody coming’, and settle in for the afternoon, happy to let the kids wear themselves out while we stick to the sofas.

August 23 Front Beach of Griya Santrian “Sprites Biennale” is back again in Bali, making Sanur the venue for this year’s edition.

The event is held from sunrise to sunset, and will be running through to September.

Each of its moments is scheduled according to the Balinese lunar calendar, and will be produced by an artist known as a ‘scenographer’. This event continues to take inspiration from the five elements of Balinese cosmology known as Panca Maha Bhuta. And for this year’s edition, “Sprites Biennale” takes ‘water’ as its main theme. Inspired by the balance of modernity and tradition that exists in Bali, this event aims to explore the island by using the talents of artists from multiple mediums such as videography, music, fashion and theater. Pandu Adnyana Pandu Adnyana is a landscape photographer based in Bali. He graduated from an institute in Surabaya as product designer and is currently working as graphic designer. His love for the camera and images popped up a decade ago and has continued to take him further into the world of photography.

How would you describe your photographic vision and style, and what kind of look do you try to create in your photos?

I shoot mostly landscape photography and have a lot of passion for this. I really enjoy the feeling of sunrise or sunset, whether it is in the mountains, beaches or lakes. I express those moments into photographs, so other people can also feel the same emotion as I feel. I always try many compositions, angles and techniques in shooting. Most of all, I keep the foreground in all my landscape shoots.

Sometimes, I look into patterns, leading lines, natural reflections and water motions. I express my mood and feelings of emptiness, tranquility, peacefulness and the beauty of the nature.

However, I regularly look for something new in photography website such as National Geographic and 500px.com.

Even though you’re primarily a landscape photographer, do you have interest in other styles of photography?

I love taking photos of people doing their daily activities, like farmers and fishermen. I also enjoy taking photos of old buildings and interiors, as well as shooting still-life objects and products.

What has been your favorite location?

There are so many beautiful places in Indonesia, especially in Bali. As a Balinese, I feel blessed that I was born in such a beautiful island with rich culture and warm, friendly people. On this island, we can capture so many things like the mountains, valleys, lakes, rice fields, waterfalls and beaches.

My favorite places of all are Mengening Beach in Bali and Atuh Beach in Nusa Penida.

How did you first get into photography?

When I was working in a tourism magazine as a graphic designer in 2005, I was inspired by the landscape photos that some of the writers sent to be published. Since then, I learned photography from the internet, and bought myself a point-and-shoot camera in 2007, and my first DLSR in 2010.

Photographers like to show their audience something in their pictures, what do you hope to inspire in other people with your work?

As I was inspired with other landscape photographer, I also hope that my works can also inspire and bring enthusiasm to others.

I also hope that my photos can increase the awareness of environmental protection and nature conservation.

Where do you get your creative inspiration?

That comes from many sources like other photographers, movies, and paintings.

Swedish and Hawaiian techniques. Unlike a regular massage, this treatment was deeper, more intense and more detailed, thanks to those three massage styles and an attentive therapist. It started off with tiny warm stones tucked between our toes, as well as a massage along the legs with bigger warm stones. Taking the stones off, it was then continued with deep acupressure on the back that would help release that muscle tension. Facing up, the massage was performed gently on the other parts of our body. The technique was applied on legs, hands, stomach and shoulders, and on our head and scalp. After 60 minutes, the therapist allowed us to lie down on the massage table for few more minutes.

MAGIC We loved the welcoming experience upon our arrival, as the appointed therapist let us have a seat and served us with cold towel and a glass of cool ginger tea. While we enjoyed the tea, the therapist approached with a consultation sheet. As we finished the main treatment, we were presented with another lovely experience that featured a cup of warm ginger tea, as well as Rock Spa’s signature warm wheat bag laid on our shoulders.
