Well the party keeps on going strong. Even with the volcano doing everything it could to dampen spirits and Bali’s high season, thankfully, the winds turned favorable just at the right time and by Merdeka Weekend flights were coming in and out of Bali airport like normal and thousands of visitors were able to arrive and leave in good fashion. That weekend saw so much going on around town that we were lucky to make it through to the end but with a big chunk of luck and a few quick naps in between the events it all went rather smashingly. Ku De Ta was busy, the Dreamfields boys were grinning and most venues were packed with gleeful smiles and nightlife abandon. However, after another hectic high season on the island, it should be time to relax a bit, but lo and behold, it never stops and continues to get even bigger and better. This weekend Ku De Ta continues with their final party of the season, this time the hip hop/R&B Block Party on Saturday. Godkitchen’s DJ Paul Thomas will also be in Kuta’s Stark’s on the same night. A tribute to Daft Punk and Food Wine Festival at Klapa on Saturday and Sunday, the witch’s party of Akelarre at El Kabron on Sunday and down at Sky the boys from the cover, SCNDL will be packing them in. Next Friday The Beat has a special event in Sanur – The Beat Room is back and this time features some notable acts. Come down and say hello and enjoy some top notch, original live music. SCOOP Anantara Seminyak Hosted Fun Day Out with Solemen Indonesia Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa Bali organised a fun day together with Solemen Indonesia, a non-profit organisation that helps the disadvantaged in Bali. The special charitable day held on August 14, was part of the resort’s sustainability programme to improve the wellbeing of the local community. During the event, the general manager of Anantara Seminyak Mr. Clinton Clovell presented a donation of Rp 25 million to Solemen Indonesia. To support the organisation, the resort has been holding the Win-Win programme, providing guests the chance to help children in need by giving 15k donation per night of the stay, and then matches the donations to be given. In addition, the resort’s gift shop also sells Solemen Indonesia merchandise with all profits going to the charitable organisation.
The Black & White Diva Luncheon at Cocoon The Diva Luncheons started with eight ladies lunching at Biku, and a thought on how they could give back to the communities in Bali. The Diva Community has significantly grown since then, with 100+ ladies currently in attendance. Their September luncheon will be held on September 18 to support www.balichildrenfoundation.com. The foundation has a target of Rp 100 million which they hope to raise from ticket sales, raffles, auctions and children sponsorships on the day. Cocoon Beach Club will put on a lavish three-course menu option, a complimentary drink on arrival, and great wine and champagne specials. Monsoons Restaurant and Bar in Darwin will also be sending over North Australia’s most popular live entertainer MAX! to perform exclusively for the this month’s Diva Luncheon. The Sanur Village Festival continues this weekend The Sanur Village Festival continues this weekend till Sunday August 30 and this year it looks bigger than ever. This year the event is being held around the Maisonette area of the Inna Grand Bali Beach Hotel. Among the many activities planned for the 10th Sanur Village Festival are beach clean ups, re-greening and reforestation plantings, a baby turtle release, surfing competition, fun run, jukung competition, food festival, fruit and ice carving, cultural parade, international kite festival, fishing tournament, body painting, photo competition, golf tournament, and musical performances. A Bazaar for local traders will be featured at the Sanur Kreatif Expo. Being a community based event that seeks to preserve and protect the local ecology, culture and innate creativity of the Sanur Beach area, the event is well frequented by the entire local community and tourists from far and wide. SCOOP Trump Resort Coming to Bali Trump Hotel Collection has signed a management agreement with one of Indonesia’s leading investment groups, MNC, to open the first Trump Collection lifestyle resort on Bali’s southwest coast. Construction on the resort is set to begin in 2016. “This is an exciting time for Trump Hotels, and we are honoured to announce our expansion into Asia and bring to market an extraordinary luxury property,” said Donald Trump Jr., executive vice president of development and acquisitions of The Trump Organization. Trump Hotels and MNC Group, which own Pan Pacific and Westin in Bali, plan to deliver a prestigious resort and residential property on the cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean and Tanah Lot.

SID celebrate 20 years and the launch of their new book Superman is Dead took to high seas last week on the Quicksilver on what was called The Punk Rock Boat to celebrate their 20th anniversary as Bali’s greatest rock band. With a large group of fans along for the ride around Benoa, the event also celebrated the book launch of Rasis! Pengkhianat! Miskin Moral!, a book documenting the history of the band by former manager and local music writer, Rudolph Dethu. Superman is Dead is the backbone of Bali eco-sustainability and has one of the largest voices for the youth on this island, and the country. With over 5.5 million fans on Facebook they have more than a few listening ears. An acoustic set from the lads was well received by friends, the media and fans, while beers and food were chugged down. From being an avid clubber who spent most of her weekends soaking up the electronic music scene in her hometown, to a feisty beat-serving jockey behind the console. Her big break came in 2008, when she was awarded the Juice DJ Quest champion and the Best New DJ Award in the same year by Juice Singapore. EJ is considered to be one the scene’s fastest rising DJs. She scored gigs in the most respectable music venues in Singapore within the first year of her debut. A weekly residence at the Moroccan-inspired Balcony Bar lead her to making regular appearances at Q Bar Singapore, Coccolatte, Dempsey House, Loof, Zouk, and various Cannery outlets like; Pure@Ministry of Sound, Amino and Kandi Bar by Hed Kandi. In the span of three days in Bali in 2009, Missy churned out sunset vibes at Ku De Ta, got housey at Living Room and then dropped a barrage of jacking techno for the peeps in Double Six. Paul Thomas is one of the most prolific house and techno DJs hailing from the United Kingdom. He’s been DJing since 1998 and earned his stripes at some of the early Sundissential parties and Stereo, where he was noticed by Bedrock’s Steve Gerrard (not the footballer). However, it was not until 2003 that he got his breakthrough, being signed as Godkitchen’s resident to open their own banging venue, Air. Since then, with the backing of Godskitchen and his crew, Thomas rose to the sky and came back a superstar.

Inpetto is two German brothers who are known as top producers in the trance scene. Having no musical background, their interest of making music appeared in the early 90s. As kids, they visited a fair and played around on a keyboard for the first time. After getting that first keyboard from their grandmother, the interest for making music grew bigger and pushed them to learn more about the possibilities of producing. They spent more of their money and time, and started to make music together in 1995.

With Fragma, they always topped just about every club chart in 1999 with their debut release titled “Toca’s Miracle”. Pan-Pot is a German duo hailing from Berlin which consists of Tassilo Ippenberger and Thomas Benedix. They first met during an audio engineering course at the prestigious SAE Institute Berlin in 2003 and were the only ones in class that loved techno. That was the start of their 10-year friendship and in 2005, they dubbed themselves Pan-Pot which refers to panoramic potentiometer – a simple device, a simple knob that sends a signal either left or right on a stereo.

They’ve done massive festivals like Awakenings, Timewarp, and Creamfields. They recently started their own imprint called Second State as a platform for their releases as well as a conceptual home for like minded people in art and fashion. There is also a documentary about the duo filmed by Sebastian Radlmeier which was released in December last year titled Back To Back Vol. Six.

Pan-Pot booked Anja Schneider to their very first party in 2005, only to find themselves having a great chat with her because of the fact that only ten people attended the ill-fated party. Having forged a strong connection with Anja who founded Mobilee records, Pan-Pot released their debut track “Popy and Paste” on the label. The convention-defying duo went on to be a hit in Berlin and beyond with the release of their debut album titled Pan-O-Rama in 2007, which contained techno singles such as “Charly” featuring Hugh Betcha. After their throbbing EP “Captain My Captain” and their remix of Slam’s “Lifetimes” garnered massive positive reviews, Pan-Pot worked on “Gravity” featuring G-Tech, another masterpiece that was #3 in the Beatport techno charts and was later remixed twice by Safeword and San Francisco. Following their triumph chart-wise, they kept producing countless originals and remixes for the likes of Booka Shade. Their last album was released on their Second State imprint and is called Cells.

Hailing from Munich, Jerome Isma-Ae is one of the most successful progressive house DJs and producers of late. He has been a musician since he was in elementary school, precisely after being taught to play several musical instruments. At the age of 12, he played the bass in a metal band. Turning 15, he started to program his first beats with a drum machine and released his first record on Delirium Records three years later. A year after his first release, he teamed up with Marcel Krieg and gave birth to the Future Funk project, bringing a successful combination of house, disco, soul and funk.

His “Underwater Love” was voted “Best Chill-Out Track” for the Beatport Music Awards 2009. ikey Moran has been DJing around all parts of Indonesia, Asia and America for the past eleven years and recently hit even more limelight with his GO-JEK company suddenly becoming the shining light of modern commerce in this land in need of some inspiration. Born in Jakarta, the 34-year-old co-founder and brand director of Go-Jek - the motorcycle taxi/courier company, renowned DJ and all-round nice guy had a quick chat with The Beat about his Jakarta and Bali worlds.
Mr Mikey Moran How do you combine work and play nowadays that you are a Go-Jek entrepreneur and top Indonesian DJ? It’s really all about time management... Since working fulltime in Go-Jek as of last year, life has been a complete rollercoaster. A lot of sacrifices have been made not to take certain gigs because your priorities have shifted. I think however being 11 years into DJing, I felt I have already fulfilled my dreams of going international and opening for big names like Far East Movement, Neyo, Swedish House Mafia, Gorillaz, Mos Def and many more. Now I guess there is now a sort of a 180 turn on not having to hustle as much and/or taking every single gig offered. Being older, I have to balance my life and health, that’s definitely important. And the fact that Go-Jek has now become a bigger priority over taking gigs. Can I get personal? Love life and stuff? Are you single? Yes single and ready to mingle.

FEATURE So you must be hot property in bachelor circles nowadays, how do you sort that out, do you do much dating? Lol. First it was DJing,and now that Go-Jek has blown up you become a bit of a celebrity from people just knowing you work for Go-Jek. Even our drivers and staff are getting that limelight. I usually don’t like to disclose any of this info though, I let people find out for themselves. It’s more interesting that way. Where would you take a gal on a date? I’m sort of a classic man. Dinner and movie date. I love food and movies so I keep it simple. But sometimes it’s fun to do something outta the ordinary. Like check out new spots around the city, rooftop bars, exhibitions, events. It’s nice to just venture out a little, gets you to know the person better. So what’s your favorite style of gig to spin at? In Jakarta. EDM rules all, but I’m over it. I started DJing because I loved playing the music I liked and my friends supported me on that. With EDM, my friends are not too keen. I love hip hop ‘cause it’s soulful, and peeps put their soul into dancing to it. But my fave is definitely deep/tech house. My last few mixes are of that genre, but it’s hard to play that in Jakarta ‘cause it’s not widely accepted by the Jakarta scene yet. Have you been playing any deep house gigs? In Bali I play a lot of deep house and now in the next two weeks I have two gigs playing deep house in Jakarta and during September I’m playing in the F1 Singapore in that genre as well. Super pumped! Where do you think are the best nights out in Jakarta and Bali? And why? My favorite party of the year is the Ku De Ta Bikini Party. It always falls on my birthday or on the week of it, so it’s an awesome place to celebrate. Just good vibes, music and peeps. I like the Straw Hut parties, loving the Cocoon Splash and Bounce parties and Jenja overall
on hip hop nights and the weekends. As for Jakarta, Jakarta Warehouse Project, my Trigger Production parties, The Joint, Peaches and Cream, and Skye Lounge Sunday parties. They are all dope because people are really into the music and go there for the music. From a DJs perspective, it’s so fulfilling. What’s your usual day like nowadays? What time do you get up? Hmm. Get up usually around 8ish. Make some breakfast if I have the groceries. Get to the office around 9.30/10. And then it’s usually a day of meetings and answering a ton of emails, messages and phone calls concerning Go-Jek. I just built a new web division for Go-Jek which I’m excited about. Leave work around 6/7. Then head home and go to the gym, play some basketball, do some running, then dinner. At night I usually just relax, download tracks or watch some TV. Gotta love the TV shows out there nowadays. What are your favorites? Game of Thrones (of course), Banshee, Mr Robot, House of Cards, Silicon Valley, Breaking Bad, Daredevil, Empire, Fargo, Person of Interest, True Detective (season 1 only). Man, there are so many... Just started Power, which is pretty cool, too. Where do you get the time to watch so much TV? Dude it’s my favorite pass-time. Just me, ma couch and ma TV, Lol. What will you be doing five years from now? I really don’t know. I have started three businesses and I will see those through to the end. I love DJing so much that I don’t know when I’ll stop, but that fire will not last forever. Hopefully with what I’ve done in life till then, I would have made my mark and be known for great things. FEATURE Tell me a bit about yourself, Rebecca. About myself? Well, I’m a Dutch born mother of two. Rock ‘n rolla. Love Quintin Tarantino movies. My style lately is inspired by Pulp Fiction and Leon (Natalie Portman). I love all kinds of music. And I’ve been living in Indonesia for nine years now. No Indonesian blood? My grandfather was born in Magelang, but was ‘brought’ to Suriname at the age of 15. VOC era. So my mom is Javanese, born in Suriname. We grew up with a more Latin influence, music wise. But still have a strong Javanese roots connection. My dad is Dutch. My grandma is Jewish. Mrs. Hofmann. So I’m a real mix. How long have you been singing? Since the age of six. I wrote my first English song at that age. That’s just how I roll. And how did the connection with Leonardo and His Impeccable Six come about? Dethu worked his magic. (Dethu. local rock ‘n roll scribe and raconteur). We met during the Bali Unite project and he proposed me to sing with Leonardo. I stopped singing after two babies. Now I’m so ready to make a comeback after a four year break. Bali next week will be my first real gig again. I am so happy.
Were you singing in Holland before all those good things happened? Yes. I was always singing. I even started my own Surinamese girl band of kaskawi music. (black/ African/Suriname drums) joined several ‘labels’ in Holland, jam sessions, etc. But I got offered a real contract when I was 21 and on vacation in Jakarta. So your music was mainly made in Indonesia? Yes. My dad didn’t really like the fact of me singing. So I wasn’t allowed to pursue my music. I had to study management, economics and law. Bachelor degree. Woo, degree too. So who were your greatest musical influences? Hehe. Gotta have brains in this world. Billie Holiday, Michael Jackson, Lauryn Hill, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Roxette, Shuggy Otis, Stevie Ray Vaughn, (1997) Whitney Houston and the list goes on and on… Ah. How can I forget... Janis Joplin. I really listen and appreciate every kind of music. Really. Korn is still badass! Is that the style you’ve always sung? What style? Ha. I sing soulful, I think. It could be any genre, but jazz and soul is really my thing. I might wanna start spoken words/ poetry. Be more artistic with my rhymes. So it was never like pop music? Nope. That wasn’t exactly my idea but I think pop music was my first and the smartest way to get into the music scene. I was 21 years old and I was happy touring all over Indonesia. Now I’m 30 and free to make the music I wanna make. Are you playing all three shows with Leonardo in Bali next weekend? Yes we play them all together. Come along! Less than 30 minutes later and we’re fighting over a portion of the best spicy wings (25k+) I have ever had on this island. No joke. Whatever it is they do I am now officially hooked on these spicy little beauties. The BBQ Chicken Skewers (26k+) also go down a treat, and it’s not long before we’re breaking out the noodle boxes and chopsticks. For our first order, we go for the Mongolian Beef (55k+), Hot & Spicy Pork (44k+) and the veggie Sofyu (42k+) and are not disappointed. Much slurping and slathering ensues, until all the boxes are almost empty and we’re done - popping the rest in the fridge in anticipation of that great life pleasure: Tomorrows cold noodle leftovers. The Chemical Brothers Born in the Echoes
Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder
Two decades after their groundbreaking, genre-splicing debut Exit Planet Dust, and Tom Rowlands and Ed Simon have run into a bit of a problem. Back in the 90s when dance music was expanding into all sorts of creative directions, the possibilities seemed limitless for the Chemical Brothers, who, along with peers Underworld and Leftfield excelled in making music that could be described as the thinking man’s electronica. Talented, ahead of their time even, Rowlands and Simon were arguably the first to court indie and alternative rock, throwing collaborations with people like Noel Gallagher into the mix on the phenomenal “Setting Sun”.
That’s not to say Born in the Echoes is boring though. Far from it. The album fizzes with energy – particularly on second single “Go”, where an on-form Q-Tip provides a breathless vocal flow over 100-mile-an-hour breaks. The unsettling “Under Neon Lights” features a chilling turn from art-rocker St. Vincent, and album closer “Wide Open” shifts the tempo nicely thanks to its warm synths and layered vocals from Beck. Perhaps the most interesting of all though, is the bizarre “A Taste of Honey”, with it’s trip hop leanings and sinister sound effects, all strung together with what sounds like a stoned bumble bee buzzing around in the speakers.
Here they are then, 20 years later, with an eighth album that despite its top-notch production and generous sprinkling of party-starting bangers, could have easily been recorded back in their 90s heyday. The 2010s further marked a distinct (and welcome) change in direction for the Chems, as they ditched the guest collaborators in search of something darker and more personal. Unfortunately, Born in the Echoes feels like a bit of a backwards step, with its (admittedly impressive) guest line up and return to mass appeal beats.
Ultimately, the lack of coherence and mix of loud, clubby songs vs. experimental slowburners means that Born in the Echoes doesn’t really work as an album, and feels more like two different concept EPs carelessly mixed together. Taken on their own though, there is still plenty to enjoy from each track, but above all, it’s just good to see Rowlands and Simon still out there, keeping the party going after all this time. Putu Bonuz Putu Bonuz is one of not-so-many artists who hail from the island of Nusa Penida. Better known as an abstract painter, he stated that he never limits himself to be within a particular scope of art. His latest exhibition has seen him exploring and developing himself even further.
Where do you find your inspiration? Inspiration comes from anything, but mostly, it is all about what is inside myself. As you might know, I paint abstract, and abstract is essentially the language of the soul. So, when I’m painting, 88% comes from my heart, while 12% comes from my mind. In the end, my art is very spiritual and contains social values although painted using a personal approach. Same goes to my current exhibition titled “Life is Delicious”. I created artworks based on my own observation on drinks like coffee, tuak, arak, or even wine. I observe that the drinks must be presented when some people gather. With the drinks, people can have conversation and share ideas. With the drinks, people can have conflict too. In fact, drinking is bad if it’s done too much, but good if done in a reasonable amount. In a nutshell, this exhibition doesn’t ask the audiences to drink or get drunk, but invites them to find the values of life from the presence of these drinks.
Introduction please. I was born in Nusa Penida. After finishing my junior high school there I moved to the island of Bali to join the High School of Arts in Batubulan. In 1995, I continued my study at the Institute of Arts Indonesia in Denpasar. You were born in Nusa Penida which is known for its marine life. So, where did your ‘art seed’ come from? I think God had sent me to the wrong place. In my lineage, there is no one who had been an artist before me. I don’t have any ancestors who were artists. But something I believe is that all Balinese people actually have this art sense within them, and they normally do it for ceremonial duties. For instance, they use art to make offerings. However, most of them are not aware of this. Art is seen to not suit the condition they belong to. Some will choose to stick to their roots, and some will go and explore. And for me, I have loved drawing from the very beginning. Drawing class was always my favorite. When I was a kid, I was also often asked to draw something on jukungs (Balinese traditional fishing boat). My art finally got stronger when I had moved out and settled at high school.
Besides painting, you also perform. Can you tell us about it? I often saw other performance art and always thought that I could also do the same. Besides that, I also thought that there are a few things the abstract paintings can’t tell, but performance can. With these in mind, I then started doing performance art in 2010. Soon, I realized that I didn’t dance well. To handle it, I then started writing poems and reading them while performing. With poems, the attention would be diverted to my voice, not my ‘stiff’ motion. In addition to performance art, I also bring poems to perform with a local band named Lolot. The band members play their instruments while I read the poems. It’s a great way to add something new into a band performance. It’s also great to have this band that respects my performance. LOOK The new venue of Rob Peetoom Spa + Hair + Beauty lies on the third floor of Kuta’s famed Beachwalk Shopping Mall. The spa is luxurious yet minimalist in design, making use of its location to provide breathtaking views of the ocean for those in need of deep pampering. FEEL This time, we experienced both their beauty and hair treatments. We started off with their “Refresh Facial” by Académie Scientifique de Beauté, which is done in 30 minutes (300k++). On a comfy treatment table, the facial began with a cleansing and peeling, accompanied with the aid of steamer which would help in opening the pores. It was followed with toning to restore the skin’s pH, blackheads removal, and face mask after the skin was back to its normal condition, ended with moisturizing to nourish the face. Moving to the hair spa, our treatment was then continued with the “Problem Solving Natural Hair & Scalp Treatment” by Davines, done in 60 minutes (550k++). This second session began with a hair analysis which was conducted through high-tech equipment to detect the hair condition, as well as determine the products which were tailored to what our hair needs. The analysis was followed with the application of relaxation oil, hair scrub to clean up the scalp from dandruff, shampoo and hair mask with subtle massage on the scalp. This treatment also included a deep, stressrelieving hot stones therapy which was applied on our head, neck, shoulders and back. After a few minutes after the hair mask, we got

our hair rinsed off. Rounding it all out was a blow dry which got us a smooth, textured and bouncy hair as desired. INGREDIENTS For our face treatment, Rob Peetoom used Académie Scientifique de Beauté which has been putting its efforts at the service of beauty for more than one century.
