I was just checking some of the booze happy hour offers in Kuta venues in the regular events pages inside this magazine and really can’t believe the price war that is going on. Four hours of eating and drinking at one famous BBQ will cost you 99k every night of the week, 20k shots of real booze in another place from 5 to 10pm, 100k for three hours free flow of Bintang beer in another. In the race to get the numbers some operators are willing to give it all away for free, but the question begs, how long can it go on like this and do they really need to do it at all? The punters are laughing all the way but most of them probably end up so blind drunk they wouldn’t know if they are coming or going - which basically gives Kuta an even worse rep than what it’s got already, with drunks and drunken behavior all over the place. I’m sure they could all lift those prices 50k and everyone would be better off, but punters, live it up while you can - eating and drinking for four hours for ten bucks is out of this world. Meanwhile, there is also another price war going on before our eyes and that’s the taxi wars. With the advent of Go-Jek, Grab Cab or Taxi, and now Uber hitting the streets and apps in your phone, prices are plummeting and it’s getting easier in the transport world. That is awesome news - especially in the Kuta area again - as those rude taxi drivers that haunt the place are given a good shock and will have to lift their game or go into extinction, where, as we all know, most of them belong anyway. New Ritz Carlton opens in Ubud The Ritz Carlton has opened a new hotel in Ubud under the name Mandapa. The new accommodation is a Ritz Carlton Reserve hotel and is set along the Ayung River in the spiritual heart of the island. Jay Sheapard is a producer/DJ hailing out of London, he’s got the skills that kill and has been flying the techno flag since the mid 2000s. Following a long background in music, Jay first found himself working for the UK online music store Juno, and a couple music PR jobs later decided that he was gonna give the scene a taste of his music. By 2007 he was ready to release his EP “Black Label 19” that gave him the publicity he had been hoping for.

He built his reputation on UK dance floors, using a combination of DJing and Ableton Live to showcase new, unreleased and exclusive material at venues and clubs such as Fabric, The End, T Bar in London and then heading to places like Hive in Zurich, DIY in Hamburg and Harry Klein in Munich. After making it big he went touring for eight consecutive years, visiting all corners of the globe, places like Australia, America, Asia and Europe and played in many of the world’s most respected venues including Panorama Bar Berlin, Arma17 Moscow, and Secretsundaze Sonar Barcelona.

Releases on labels such as Diynamic, Pets Recordings, Freerange, Buzzin, Fly, Paper, REbirth and many more earned him nominations for best Deep House and best Nu Disco artist in the Beatport awards as well as much praise from the press and DJ Community. Hailing from Hamburg, the Adana Twins have secured their reputation with a series of EPs that have made them amongst the most buzzworthy acts to emerge from the German media capital. Formed in 2006, the duo made up of Take It Easy and Friso were fans of the sound coming from Ed Banger and its affiliates. But unlike many of their peers, they soon began to feel exhausted with the harder and faster ethos that took over the community, which led them on a quest to find a different sound. Their appreciation for deeper beats shortly found their way into all-night DJ gigs, which allowed them to explore the trends of the times by playing all styles and tempos. They then established a residency at famed Reeperbahn club Baalsaal where they could incorporate a full range of dance music over eight to 10 hour sets.

Noah, formerly known as Peterpan, is an Indonesian alternative pop/rock band. Noah’s history can be traced back to 1997 when Ariel, Uki, Andika (former keyboardist) and Indra (former bassist) formed a school band called Topi. However, the band soon broke up, and only in 2000 did they regroup themselves under the name Peterpan. In 2012, Peterpan officially changed their name to Noah, with their formation today comprising of Ariel on vocal, Uki and Lukman on guitars, David on keyboard and Reza on drums.

As Noah, they released a fresh album titled Seperti Seharusnya in 2010, which sold more than 200,000 copies in just three days. DJ and Producer Gregor Salto is a Dutch DJ running an eclectic mix of soul, Latin jazz and house music. After taking piano lessons at the age of eight, Gregor was sure he wanted to be immersed in music for his whole life. Amba Shepherd is an award-nominated singer and songwriter hailing from Australia. She comes from a very musical family, and has been in music pretty much her whole life. He created his first music at the age of 12 and became a theatrical music director in high school.

n intensifying drought caused by the El Niño weather condition, the Rupiah plunging to new depths with each passing day, the Jakarta Composite Index falling by 20 percent since the beginning of the year (and by 4 percent in one day). This is not a description of Indonesia as it lived through Krismon (the monetary crisis) in 1997/98, or the 2007/8 world economic collapse, but a summary of what the nation is currently experiencing. The Indonesian economy has been showing signs of structural weakness since the start of 2015 and this seems to have combined with growing unease about the world economy, triggered by worries that China is heading for a “hard landing” after 10 years or more of unprecedented, double-digit economic growth. The result is that the rupiah dropped below an exchange rate of Rp 14,000 to the US dollar by late August and might well be lower by the time you read this article in early September. Indonesia avoided the worst of the 2007/8 collapse mainly due to the size and strength of its domestic market but it cannot repeat that feat this time round, given the huge impact of China’s economy throughout East and Southeast Asia. Combine this with oil recently dropping below US$40 per barrel (a six-year low) and Indonesia, a net importer but an oil producer nonetheless, seems to have been caught up in a “perfect” economic storm from which there is no easy escape. Meanwhile, the government seems unable to do much more than wring its hands and watch the gathering storm from the side lines. The first anniversary of the Jokowi administration is little more than a month away, but its sluggishness in spending on infrastructure projects, which would help to boost local economies, has dragged down market confidence.

A representative for Glen Grant and Wild Turkey, Robin Coupar, demonstated the finer things about whiskies last Saturday night with an exclusive tasting at Single Malt. First off he demonstrated how you can base where a whiskey/whisky is from based on spelling alone and segued into the fine art of gathering the aroma of a whisky through rubbing it on your hands. Another key lesson, was that due to the crazy demand for single malts across the globe, younger blends are becoming in vogue and if you’ve done any duty free shopping lately, anything 12 years and up is getting a price hike. But alas, it’s not about the age, its about the taste which was a good lesson indeed.

Bale Udang If you’re looking for an authentic Indonesian meal in a pretty cool setting, Bale Udang is what you’re after.

Orginally called Ma Enking, the restaurant has a very unique look and is a great place to enjoy traditional Indonesian cuisine in a very cool setting.

It’s a great place to bring an out of town guest to showcase traditional Indonesian food with a cool wow factor in that your dining space is over water.

The very first impression that you get from Bale Udang is that this is a very different place. The restaurant’s cenerpiece is a giant fish pond filled with fish which is surrounded by bale’s that hover over the water on stilts. The bales are entirely above water which make for a pretty cool experience of watching fish swim all around you. You can even score some fish food and watch a full on fish frenzy in the pond.

We tried a bunch of items from their specials menu which is available through to the end of the year. First off we had the Udang Bakar Kemangi (100k) which is deep fried skewered shrimp slathered in chilli and honey sauce. If you’re into shrimp skin, it’ll be a delightfully crunchy experience and you’ll get the most of that sweet and spicy flavor. Another dish we had from their specials menu was the Ayam Panggang Sambal Matah (90k) which was grilled whole chicken with a ton of shallots and chili on oil (smabal matah) on top. The chickens spice and herb marinade was solid and if you like that onion/shallot taste, this is your dish.

Despite it’s name, Bale Udang has way more than just shrimp with a huge variety of Sundanese dishes printed in a fabulous picture menu that makes choosing food a breeze. Waiting staff either go directly to your bale or the more

One the most pleasing things on the menu was the Gurame Goreng Terbang (90k). Despite the menu saying that the fish is carp in the English translation, we can assure you that it is not. It’s actually gourami fish which they have mistranslated. The gourami was brilliantly fileted and deep fried in a way that made the flesh easily pulled from the bone in satisfyingly big chunks. The fish is arranged vertically which gives it a cool look. Another great gourami dish is the Pepes Gurame (75k) which is the entire fish cooked in a banana leaf mixed with all sorts of herbs and spices. It’s cooked to an almost dumpling like consistancy which can be described as extremely soft with the loss of the flaking quality associated with the fish.

As for beverages, we tried their Ubud Avocado Float (25k) which was totally decadent. Avocado juice topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup, it was delish. We drank the Segar Dinging (25k) from their specials menu mentioned earlier. It was herbal ice tea mixed with sprite and it was actually surprisingly tasty and refreshing. Another great beverage to top off the meal was the Bajigur (15k) which was a hot herbal tea of sorts with coconut milk, palm sugar and a hint of ginger. All in all, Bale Udang is one of those places that if you found it yourself, you’d be proud of discovering this somewhat hidden gem on Nakula 2. But since you’re reading this, you heard it from us. Zulham Damanik Zulham Damanik was born in North Sumatra, but is currently living and creating his art in Bali. He moved to Jakarta in 1994 for his studies, as well as to fulfill his ambition to become an artist. After a decade engaging in various phases of life through his paintings in the city, he moved to Bali to get more inspiration for his art. In Bali, he started another new journey and began to express his new spirit through the abstract paintings that he now creates. Could you introduce yourself and explain your interests? I have been in love with art since I was a kid. Painting has always been my hobby, and it now turns out to be a profession. Speaking about background, I have never attended any art school. I’m just a literature graduate and selftaught painter. In 1994, I moved to Jakarta for my education. As my art curiosity grew bigger, I then decided to pursue it deeper by taking course at an art studio. From there, I started to know art wider. In 2004, I moved to Bali to deepen my knowledge. This movement somehow influenced the characteristic of my works. What motivates you to paint? Besides being part of my profession, painting is actually something that can soothe my soul every time I pour my imagination and inspiration into the canvas. Through painting, I can feel other sensations that I can’t explain clearly. And thus, it makes the works of art which are unique and innovative.

Why do you choose abstract art? Abstract is my current art genre, although I have been working on other genres previously like realism, naturalism and impressionism. For the past 15 years, I have always found that abstract art is more striking to my soul. It’s where I can release all the feelings loosely. I have no burden, and it’s enjoyable. Where do you draw your inspirations from? Basically, my works are all inspired by the nature around me, as well as all human emotions, sensibility and invigoration. These inspirations are well-emphasized by the corresponding titles of my paintings. What is your future vision? I’m so proud to be born in Indonesia which is well-known with its rich culture. We have so many traditions that we can learn and enjoy, as well as the natural beauty and wealth that we should be grateful about. As for my future vision, I will always try to learn and create art, so that I can be a respected artist without being somebody else. With the strong culture, education and knowledge that I hold, I believe that I will be able to break out the world of art with the works I create.
