Born in the Netherlands, Mark Sixma AKA M6 inevitably caught the dance music bug from growing up in the now-famous Breda, the Dutch city that produced Tiesto, Hardwell and many more. From very early in his life, he had a passion for music, ranging from house to rock, and even classical piano pieces. The latter encouraged him to learn how to play keyboards which proved to be a great benefit later on. In high school, he started spinning records at parties and producing some of his own tracks on Fruityloops. However, it was not till 2005 that he started really putting effort into what he thought was just a hobby.

Mark Sixma has toured extensively, with big performances across the globe alongside top DJs like Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Gareth Emery, Judge Jules, Markus Schulz, Paul van Dyk, Sander van Doorn and W&W. The pinnacle of his career to date was performing at A State of Trance 550 and 650 in 2014, as well as Nature One, Electronic Family and Escapade Music Festival.

In 2008, he released “Destination 6” which received Tune of the Week status on van Buuren’s A State of Trance radio show and “Amazon Dawn” featured on the ASOT album that year. His next single titled “Fade 2 Black” led him signing up to record label Armada Music and made him once again earn a Tune of the Week status on the radio show. In 2013, he released his epic single titled “Requiem” which went onto hit the Beatport’s Trance Chart at #1, beating the likes of world number one Armin van Buuren. A year later, he remixed the iconic song called “Adagio for Strings” which was supported by many artists like Markus Schulz, Cosmic Gate and Andrew Rayel.

Oliver Koletzki is a techno producer at heart. Since the age of 12, Oliver was already deeply affected by the production side of house music. He started out programming hip hop beats on the C64, but quickly fell in love with more electronic sounds like break-dance and synthpop. When he turned 18, he started DJing in his hometown of Braunshweig, Germany and quickly became a regular DJ in the local clubs. In 2000 he decided to move to Berlin to study music – and to party in one of the party capitals of the world. He landed himself some summer time gigs, got his first record signed and everything changed, for the better.

It’s going to sound like a fairy tale to some of you. In 2005, 29-year-old Oliver presses 500 copies of his underground hit “Der Muckenshwarm”. One of those copies lands in Sven Väths record bag and whenever he plays the track, people go wild. Shortly after, the techno legend signs the track to his label, Cocoon. “Der Muckenshwarm” is instantly considered a techno classic and becomes the best sold techno record for 2005. Oliver is voted best newcomer of the year for Groove Magazine and sat at the forefront of the techno world.

That one mentioned above, “Der Musckenshwarm”. Later in 2008, Oliver creates “3 Tage Wach” and it becomes best-sold techno track of that year (the man is a producing animal). In 2009 he continues his success with the release of his album Grobstadmarchen – an electropop album featuring national and international names like; Mieze Katz (MIA), Axel Bosse, Juli Holz, Pyur and Fran. His singles “Hypnotized” and “U-Bahn” got airplay on international radio shows and when he plays them in clubs he grabs the mic and sings along.

Aeroplane is a solo DJ, consisting of Vito de Luca in the pilot seat. He used to own a record store when he was 19 years old, which in a way helped to develop his eclectic taste of music and incorporate it in his tracks under the guidance of his DJ uncle. The Italian-Belgian producer DJ created Aeroplane together with Stephen Fasano AKA The Magician in 2007 after meeting him in 2001. However, the latter chose to focus on his own project, amicably leaving Vito to be the sole man in the cockpit in 2010.

Vierratale is a three-piece band from Jakarta which was founded as Vierra in 2008, before finally officially adding the suffix ‘tale’ to its name in 2013. The band was created due to the members’ encounter over Friendster, and originally made up of four talented artists. The four initial members were the band’s frontman and keyboardist Kevin, Widy as vocalist, Raka as guitarist and Tryan on drum. After several years playing as four, the band is now left with three members after Tryan decided to bow out last year.

After having such a great musical year and garnering lots of teenage fans, Vierratale received a Dahsyatnya Award in 2010 as the Best New Upcoming Artist of the Year. They were then honored by the international scene in 2013, as the band was nominated at the World Music Awards in World Best Group category, presenting Indonesia alongside Noah and JKT48.

About three months after being established, Vierratale released their debut album titled My First Love which features many hits revolving around puppy love. Many tracks in this album such as “Dengarkan Curhatku”, “Bersamamu”, “Perih”, “Rasa Ini”, “Jadi Yang Kuinginkan” and “Seandainya” have become the first on several national music charts, and were heard on television and radio shows. 2011 saw them shining even more with their second album titled Love, which was released on the Valentine’s Day. Paasha has one of the most distinctive facades on Jl Oberoi (Kayu Aya) with a huge lobby and the club Alibi down below. But another gem the hotel has hidden is the excellent rooftop pool that overlooks much of the island. The pool is huge and is flanked on both sides by palms and frangipani trees all lined up in neat rows in between pool loungers. It’s a cool sight to see and behind all that lies their Rooftop Bar. The Rooftop Bar at U Paasha has a BBQ buffet every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday night where you can be a complete glutton under the stars for a mere 190k++ per person. The BBQ entails a live grill along with a lot of other items to go along with all that meat. Like any respectable buffet patron, we went straight for the highest dollar item offered which was the excellent slipper lobster. These smaller cousins to the spiny lobster most conventionally served at seafood establishments are every bit as tasty as their larger counterparts. The slipper lobster is halved along the middle and you can throw all sorts of condiments on it. Lemon butter is provided next to the lobster, but we found the herbal butter at the bread station to be a perfect addition. The lobster was displayed on a hot clay dish that also included grilled calamari and mahi mahi. If you’re feeling more terrestrial, try out the spare ribs. It’s excellently sauced and pulls apart pretty easily. They also have sirloin steaks made to order. Just specify how you want it cooked but be aware that the steaks are of the thin, minute variety. There’s also excellent chicken wings as well as pork sausages which also come wrapped in bacon. There’s also a plethora of sauces and condiments to mix and match with the meat items which are really delicious. Another great feature is the live gado gado station where a chef constantly makes this traditional Indonesian vegetable dish. It’s boiled vegetables smothered in peanut sauce and it totally balances out the heavy meats. Right next to the gado gado is a bread and salad station to get you fill of carbs and legumes.

Next to that sits their soup of the day which is completely different each time and varies between, tom kha, cream of mushroom, pumpkin and everything in between. They also have four hot plates which also rotate and feature assorted vegetables, pastas, lasagnas, as well as other savory treats. Deserts get their own table and feature traditional Indonesian sweets like tapioca and pandan and fruits. The Rooftop Bar also has some great cocktails and mocktails as well as various wines. We had a Coco Mojito (110k++) for sunset and it was amazing. It was made from Malibu, rum, nata de coco and muddled with basil, mint, and lime. If you love buffets or just want a tasty meal of unlimited proportions, the sunset BBQ buffet at U Paasha’s Rooftop Bar is an excellent spot. Teja Astawa Teja Astawa is a Balinese artist who lives and works in Sanur. His stories are told in a thematic series, painted in a style that is inspired by Kamasan style. He draws his inspiration from subjects that range from animal figures, to wayang stories that nurtured his childhood. How was the beginning of your art journey? I’ve always liked arts from the beginning. Before delving into arts, I was into literature. I used to write short stories for magazines. When I was in high school, I loved to write stories and made doodles in my books. After those times expressing words, I entered the Institute of Arts Indonesia in Denpasar. How did your art style evolve? In the beginning, it was following wayang stories. Then I stopped being glued to wayang stories as I was trying to find what I actually liked. It was also due to the market, so I started working on other styles like abstract and so on. As time passed by, thoughts of wayang stories reappeared. I then went back to my ‘roots’, but with a different technique this time. Now, I’m creating my wayang stories with Kamasan style influences from Klungkung.

It’s always fun to see monkeys. For my works, I take the character of these monkeys to be portrayed. The monkey is not always Hanoman. It can be something else in the wayang story; the vice regent, for instance. And this is what I meant; I created ‘my stories’ without being too focused on these traditions and rules. I used the character as an inspiration, adding a bit of humor that attracts people to enjoy these stories until the end. Can you briefly tell us about the exhibition? Through this exhibition, I’m trying to find the red string between our works. Mangku Muriarti’s works are the references for my works, whereas mine show the Kamasan style that has been touched by modernity. Here, we are filling each other’s empty spaces. It’s also for other people to see how Kamasan style is done outside of Kamasan, as well as the Kamasan style that is done in Kamasan itself. It’s a fusion. Teja’s works can be seen at Sudakara Art Space in an exhibition which will through February 3.

Why did you pick wayang stories as your main inspiration in the first place? Indirectly, I wanted to preserve this traditional puppetry as it has become my main source of inspiration. I preserve it because I love these traditional puppets. However, my own portrayal is different from the traditional one. The traditional one has strict traditional standards and rules. Mine, on the contrary, is freer. It isn’t really attached to those prescribed rules. What are the objects that mostly appear in your works? Animals. Lately, I like to draw monkeys.
