second Sunday. Seminyak is definitely beginning to buzz again, with standout spot Oberoi Road taking the lead over the last few years, with Petitenget not far behind it. But Kuta is the area lagging a tad. Let’s hope they manage to sort out the taxi drivers soon – and they stop clogging up traffic before it’s too late. Meanwhile we stayed in Kuta during this week for the first time in ages and it was so fun. All you Bali-wise long-term people should try it sometime. You may be surprised.

SANUR VILLAGE FESTIVAL TO BE BACK SOON The spirit of togetherness and sense of belonging has made Sanur Village Festival (SVF) a communal activity that brings real benefits to the public and community surrounding this coastal village. The story of Matthias Schober a.k.a SHOW-B is that of a highly acclaimed, young German man from Berlin that had a dream to be a world class DJ and ended up as the head honcho at his own record label. DVBBS is a Canadian electronic duo, composed of Chris Chronicles and Alex Andre. The brothers taught themselves how to play guitar, bass and drums when they were just teenagers, and they started writing and performing their songs at underground punk/ reggae shows. In the early stages of their career, the brothers joined forces with Martin Sinotte, calling themselves Dubbs. However, the latter left the group in 2012, prompting the brothers to change their name slightly from Dubbs to DVBBS.

Brohn is a Berlin-based Australian DJ who is allied firmly with the forces of underground music. His introduction to music came via grunge and classic rock back in the nineties. The water close to shore is super mellow with the surf break a little bit of a paddle away where the reef drops. There are a few beach cafes with loungers and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s super uncrowded when compared to a lot of other local beaches. STUFF TO DO Serangan Beach is known as one of the better surf spots in Bali.The surf is generally clean but fickle in size, where surfers can choose from the A framed left or right handed peaks. The seawater at the beach is calm and ideal for swimming glistening in shades of brilliant blues and greens. If you feel like an extra bit of relaxation, a beach massage is generally around 50k. verything about Nu Lazer looks appealing, from the breezy restaurant lounge area and air conditioned upstairs section, to the enticingly stocked bar that sits grandly at the centre of it all, dishing up a huge selection of drinks, cocktails and refreshing beverages to a growing number of in-the-know punters. Swing on by from 11am onwards for a chilled out feed, with a selection of tasty lunchables and dinner options, courtesy of highly decorated Balinese chef Ida Ayu Periyanti. Living over in Seminyak I rarely manage to get over to Sanur for a feed, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been some years since I last set foot in Lazer, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cool to see how the once cheap-n-cheerful venue has matured into a much swankier joint. Keen to check out the whole package, I enlist

a couple of Sanur-based buddies to join me for a late lunch and a tipple or two. First up on the drinks front, we welly into a fruity Ambassador Cosmo (75k++), a whisky-soaked Chocolate Zazerac (85k++) and the frothy Supacrema (65k++) – all absolutely succeed in hitting the spot. Out comes the menu – neatly presented and absolutely stuffed with mouthwatering dishes – and we decide to share out a portion of the classic Indonesian style Chicken in Pandan Leaves (6pcs/40k++, 12pcs/75k++, 18pcs/100k++). Served with a tangy tamarind dip, these super-succulent nibbles are the ideal beer snack, and do not last long.

JW Red Label (650k++ weekends) mean that a great night out any day of the week in Sanur is always on the cards. Add to that 100k++ freeflow beer every Saturday from 8-10pm, and buy-one-get-one-free pizzas every day 11am12pm and you’ve really got a good thing. Next up for the mains comes the hearty Thai Green Chicken Curry (70k++) and the superb Pindang Iga Beef Rib Soup (90k++) – cooked Palembang style and crunchy melinjo crisps and spicy sambal sauce. For the other two, we checked out the super tender Lamb Chops (240k++/250gr) and a sharing rack of the cooked-to-perfection BBQ Pork Ribs (170k++/500gr) slathered in spicy sauce and falling off the bone. It’s a pretty epic feed and we’re all suitably stuffed, there’s just room left to share out a portion of the Vanilla Pannacotta (45k++) for a sweet treat to end on. With a wealth of other alcoholic and non-alcoholic concoctions on offer, not to mention the usual beers, spirits and shooters it would be pretty easy to hang around after dinner and make a night of it, and we stick around ‘til well after dark to see the live band get going from 9-12 every day. Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

Musical genres falling out of favour on a whim can be cruel to bands that base their whole schtick on a narrow scope. Some years ago, Sydney’s Wolfmother bet all their chips on retro revivalism – channeling the spirit of Black Sabbath, Zeppelin & late Beatles to magnificent effect, but a decade later and the question has to be asked; are we all retro-ed out? 2006’s self-titled debut was a savvy precursor to the late noughties obsession with all things 70s, but the band failed to capitalize on the momentum and it was a good three years until the band, consisting really of only lead singer Andrew Stockdale by this point – put out the underwhelming follow-up “Cosmic Egg”. Essentially a weaker facsimile of their debut, the album failed to gain traction. With band members jumping ship soon afterwards, it seemed that Stockdale had run out of ideas. Victorious marks a return-to-form of sorts,

that unflinchingly sticks to the blueprint of Wolfmother’s previous long players. Opener “The Love That You Give” picks up where global smash “Joker & The Thief” left off. All breakneck riffery and shout along choruses, it’s a solid dose of rock pomp and bombast that proves unashamedly retro stylings can still sound exciting. “Victorious”, “The Simple Life” and “Gypsy Caravan” all back up this notion, providing the high points of an album that would be at home most on the pub stereo. Less successful is the campy “Best of a Bad Situation”, or “Maggie May” replica “Pretty Peggy” – both rock ballads crucially lacking in soul. Yes we’ve heard it all before and yes, the retro thing is wearing a bit thin, but the bottom line is Victorious is better than the second but not as good as the first. If that sounds like your cuppa tea, crank it up and enjoy. Dan Ashcroft.

Galung Wiratmaja Through his art, Galung Wiratmaja seeks to translate the values of what surrounds us as humans, as well as to appreciate even the smallest things. He uses minimal, warm colors to portray it, with a distinctive way of representing the figures which invites his audiences to look far ahead. How did you become an artist? I had always liked to draw. It was also my neighborhood that had given me a strong influence. At that time, many children in my village were involved in creating arts, doing sculptures and paintings in particular. When I was 13 years old, I started to put more focus on traditional paintings. After I finished high school, I intended to widen my knowledge on arts. With this in mind, I then continued my study at Udayana University where I took art courses. What are the things that mostly inspire your works? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about the things around me. It can be about the environment, daily life or personal experience. Meanwhile, the inspirations come from everywhere. My interest toward something can stir the emotions and ideas which would be the foundations of my works. How has the pursuit of your art style been? I began with the expressionism style that tends to have a slight abstract style. During the process, I also did landscape painting which was still wrapped in expressionistic style. Lately, though Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m still interested in and working on expressionism, the figurative elements in my works have begun to appear.

Any particular meaning of the colors that often appear in your works? These colors basically represent the feelings that reinforce my works thematically. However, there are also times when the colors are just colors; they are not meant to represent anything. As we can see, the predominant color in my work is gray, with the shades of green and brown to accompany it. If you can say, what is the strongest characteristic in your art? In the recent years, the figures in my work have always had their backs facing the audiences. It is only my figuresâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; backs that are shown. I am focused to explore this side recently as it opens a space that could be more imaginative. Lastly, what are you trying to convey through your works? My messages in general are how to make more sense of something that has been overlooked, how to put more concern on something that has been considered unimportant, and how to privilege something that seems mundane. LOOK Tucked in a cozy nook of the White Rose Kuta Resort, Villas & Spa, Island Spa is one of the best choices when one is in search of a comforting spa experience within Legian. This spa is simple yet pleasant, housing five treatment rooms which are furnished neatly. The Balinese-inspired setting generates a sense of calmness, perfected with the charming scent of tuberose flowers that bring out even more good vibes to it. FEEL We opted for the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Garden Spaâ&#x20AC;? (450k) which packaged almost everything that our body and mind needed. The treatment started off with a ritual foot bath where we had our foot sanitized through the help of sea salt in a bowl of warm water, plus the mint-scented soap which was just refreshing. Moving to the treatment room, the next session began with a nice stretching, followed by the traditional Balinese massage which moved our soul into a pure bliss. The invigorating massage contained a series of hand movements which landed precisely on pressure

points of our body. Done with the massage, we were treated with a gentle body scrub which brought together a nice aroma of green tea. It was then followed by a yogurt body mask, accompanied by a deep head and scalp rub. After a nice shower, we topped this treatment off with a warm flower bath which just made everything feel complete. INGREDIENTS This treatment utilized specially-chosen ingredients which were extracted only from nature. It included the green tea scrub which had been mixed with skin-replenishing actives and jojoba granules. This combination did not only soothe and calm the skin, but also acted therapeutically. MAGIC This spa is a great choice if you look for that feel-good spa in the heart of Kuta. They have a good location, good layout, good ambience, good staff and good treatments, all at good value which makes them an excellent option.
