SCOOP BALI ADVENTURE TOURS AND THE JOHN FAWCETT FOUNDATION ORGANIZED CHARITY EVENT Bali Adventure Tours and The John Fawcett Foundation organized a charity event that comprised of eye examinations, prescribed eyeglasses administration and cataract surgery. The event was held on the April 19 and focused on community members in Kedewatan and nearby villages. This charity event was conducted in the Community Centre of Kedewatan Village. A total of 229 participants were registered for eye examinations, and eight patients with cataract went through surgery. The next day, volunteers from Bali Adventure Tours and The John Fawcett Foundation visited two elementary schools in the villages of Kedewatan and Melinggih. The purpose of the visit was to conduct eyes-screening test and administration of prescribed eyeglass for students who need it. During the visits, an approximatlyover 250 students from both schools were engaged and got their eyes examined. Organized by Bali Adventure Tours and The John Fawcett Foundation, this event also had support from the regency government of Gianyar, Gianyar’s Youth Organization, and the Ophthalmologist Association of Bali.

TEDXUBUD RETURNS TO BALI TEDxUbud returns to Bali on May 28, with the theme ‘Small Things, Great Things’. It will feature a selection of Indonesian and international leading thinkers, storytellers and performers who will share their ideas to an audience of 300. Born in Dartford, his musical interest began as a drummer when he was a young lad. His first job as a DJ was at a wedding when he was 15, steering him to begin playing soul and dance music in every club that would give him a gig. After leaving school in Rochester, he bought a van and started setting up his own sound system to operate a mobile disco. During the late 70s, he became a journalist for monthly Blues & Soul magazine and appeared on local radio stations at the same time. His knowledge on the dance underground scene then saw him appointed as an A&R manager at an independent label London Records in 1983. In 1988, he launched his own record label FFRR through London Records to embrace the new wave of electronic music which flooded into the UK from places like Detroit and Chicago.

Pete has hosted the Essential Selection on BBC Radio 1 since 1991, and it has attracted one of the highest audiences for a radio show in the UK to date. His All Gone Pete Tong brand has achieved global renown through world-class parties in Miami and Ibiza, as well as dedicated stages at festivals like Creamfields, TomorrowWorld and SW4. On top of this, he has also founded The International Music Summit, a three-day dance music conference which is held in Ibiza, Los Angeles and Singapore. Outside of his achievements in dance music, Pete has also made a reputable career in the movie industry. As a musical supervisor, he was tapped to oversee movies such as Human Traffic, Event Horizon, Shopping, The Beach and 24-Hour Party People, as well as an executive producer in the seminal It’s All Gone Pete Tong. More recently, he was selected to help score Harry Brown.

As a music fan and collector, Nukewood has been closely following the local and overseas scene for many years now. The Sydney-based DJ started off his career with vinyl, but soon turned to work with digital formats. This brought about the natural progression of getting behind the decks and bringing the music to the masses. James Zabiela was born in England, Southampton on August 7, 1979. He has been in the DJ game for a long while and produces some of the best breakbeat known to man. Back when he was a kid his father asked him to help him out at their family’s record store. James agreed and spent his entire holiday there, absorbing whatever tunes his father collected like a sponge. Out of his love for computer games, James tried and tested many Pioneer products and implemented it creatively during his sets, earning him a nickname of the technical prodigy, a great expectation that he still lives up till today.

James Zabiela popped his Balearic cherry by warming up for Sasha at the place regular Ibiza partiers calls Inside At Space. Two years later, he became the club’s new bi-weekly resident and has now been there for over a decade. Hideo Kobayashi is a Japanese mastermind in the electronic music world. At age four, he began playing classical piano, by the time he was ten he had discovered and immersed himself with more electronic sounds like techno and pop. When he reached 15, he began to actively pursue his love of music and decided he would make music for a living. His first few gigs were at various local Tokyo nightclubs and sooner or later gained a fan base by composing and recording his skills on synthesizers, sequencers and rhythm machines. After travelling around the local scene he ventured over to San Franciso in the U.S around 1999, it was here where he got captivated by the west coast house movement and found his true sound.

The man is a true musician. His versatile musical grooves are a welcomed item in today’s dance music scene. Hideo’s releases of modern deep house and also floor filling techno bangers are all under his own name, his other monikers, Yellow Diamond, Nagano Kitchen (w/Jerome Sydenham) are also recommended if you are a true music lover. In Tokyo alone, he has played in venues like Loop, Module and Space Lab Yellow. Hideo quickly got recognition from a wide range of DJs like Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, X-Press 2, Richie Hawtin, Hernan Cattaneo, Lauren Garnier to name a few. Hideo is extremely skilled on the decks but in my opinion his strong suit is his productions.

Talking techno, Hideo recently teamed up with partner Jermoe Sydenham for Drumcode’s 15th anniversary compilation. His unique musical vision has gone beyond the limits of micro genres to capture a cross section of dance music that has reached the ears and hearts of millions across the globe. His track Amarillo was featured on Hernan Cattaneo’s mix CD and his Renaissance mix. He also topped the Traxsource album chart with his single “After the Drama”. Not to mention his first album “The Pattissier” which went to number 1 in the iTunes store in Japan.

Aldrin is the most internationally prominent Asian DJ who hails from Singapore. His musical career actually started when he was 14 when he began fiddling with the music equipment his brother stored at their home, learning by himself how to play the turntables. His professional DJ career began in 1996, five years after he flew around the world as a flight attendant for Singapore Airlines. It was one lucky night when his friend got him a desirable slot to play at Zouk in Singapore, leading him to land a job offer right after the set.

Aldrin was the only Asian to be featured as DJ of the Month, dubbed as ‘a contender for best new DJ’ on UK’s Muzik magazine in 2000. He was also referred to as ‘Asia’s #1 DJ to catch in Ibiza’ by the same magazine, and was also nominated for Best New Comer on Ibiza DJ Awards in 2004. Aldrin had been the musical ambassador of Singapore’s Zouk for over a decade, but left the club in 2007 to focus on his music production. He now runs his own One with Music digital label which he started back in 2008. Additionally, he has also spread his vibes, playing at gigs all over Asia, Europe and North America, as well as at distinguished clubs including London’s Ministry of Sound, Ibiza’s Pacha, New York’s Ceilo, Tokyo’s Womb and Seoul’s Ellui.

Well the winter in Sweden is long and cold but today it is a warm spring day over here, so today I’m feeling great! I guess the long winters makes me stay inside the warm studio, so it’s a productive period for me.
What do you think about the nightlife scene in Indonesia?
How did DJing become your profession? I started playing live with my Indie band when I was 17 years old at a club in Sweden and after a while (since I was also working in a record store) they asked me to be their DJ every Wednesday. Years later I started my own club nights in Stockholm and they became more and more popular with around a thousand people every Saturday. By then I also had started to produce my own house music and I slowly started to understand that I could make a living from my music. So I quit my day job as a graphic designer and gave it a shot. Hardware in the studio that you use regularly in your productions? Mostly synthesizers like my Jupiter 6 or Prophet 5 going through a nice pre amp. I also use a lot of old digital Yamaha classics like the TX81Z and a lot of cheap reverbs that sound really cool. What do you like to do when you’re not working? I’m cooking food for my family, getting the kids to and from school, brushing their teeth, get them to bed and after that, if I’m not totally exhausted, I lay down reading a book. Most often a music biography but even more often a book about Persian rugs. Any up and coming artists that you know are going to make it big this year? I would put my bets on DJ Assam, Lukas Nystrand von Unge or Jayda G. And definitely
I started hearing about the nightlife in Indonesia and famous clubs like Zouk (Singapore I know) a long time ago when DJs like François K told me about them. He was saying that the night life was great and he was right. I am super exited going back to Bali, for me it is a super exotic, I can’t wait! Do you party as much as you DJ/work? Where is your go-to place when you want to party? I always thought that being in the DJ booth is the best way to party. That is my favorite spot. I’ve got my favorite drinks and music there. I’m playing most weekends so when I’m free I prefer hanging out with my family or catching up with my friends at a bar drinking far too many vodka tonics. Tell us about the party scene in Berlin. Well I don’t live there but it is definitely one of my favorite cities to play and whenever you stop playing, there is always a fun place to go. If you were stuck on an island with three tracks on your Ipod, what would they be? I could chill out to Mood II Swing’s ”All night long”, David Bowie’s ”The Secret Life of Arabia” or Warpaint’s ”Shadows” every day. No problem. G’day Gareth, where in the world are you and what’s the first thing you can see through your nearest window? I’m currently sat on a plane answering you! I can see the lights and skyline of New York where I am about to land as I have a show tonight. What were your musical inspirations growing up as a kid till you started spinning records? All sorts of music! I was classically trained on the piano and also loved Mozart, I was also in a punk rock band for a few years. I particularly remember Robert Miles’ “Children” being a big inspiration for me getting into dance music. Do you have a favourite party/venue that you look forward to every year? It would be so hard to pick just one... One I love is the Guaba Beach Bar in Cyprus, super unusual venue and always an incredible rave! How often do you tour to Indonesia? Do you have any highlights from past events here? I haven’t been here for a couple of years. I love touring Indonesia. I am a huge fan of the food as I really love spicy stuff and also the people are just super friendly and welcoming. How do you choose what music to play at each venue? For club shows I will generally go with the flow and whatever the audience is feeling and I’m
vibing off! Sometimes for a big festival play like EDC or Coachella I would plan it roughly... What is Electric For Life all about? Great music, parties, merchandise, and giving back. Made Adi Putra Sentana Made Adi Putra Sentana is a young emerging artist who hails from the village of Tampaksiring. Taking inspiration from the environmental, he plays with deep colors, complete with human expressions and gestures to tell what he has on his mind. How did you get into the world of arts? It began as a childhood hobby. Meanwhile, living in a neighborhood of artists has got me involved in the world of arts indirectly. As it got deeper, I pursued art seriously by taking formal studies. What is your biggest motivation to become an artist? Being an artist was my childhood goal as I wanted to create something that can inspire people. It had then become a motivation for me to realize it. Where did you study? I studied at the High School of Arts in Batubulan. Then, I continued to the Institute of Arts Indonesia in Denpasar, majoring in painting. I’ve been active in art exhibitions since I started my degree in 2009. Do you have any figures who inspire you in creating art? Many people have inspired me, including the late maestro, Gusti Nyoman Lempad. I also admire Nyoman Gunastra. Despite his age, he is still active in creating his art. His works show the expression of scratches and purity of lines. His works, too, are remembered all the time, and have inspired me and many people.
What about your style? My style tends to be figurative. It’s characterized by the subjects’ expressions and gestures that support the themes of my works. What is the best thing as an artist? Being an artist is a great privilege. As an artist, I can express whatever I feel through the creations which inspire many people. And as a young artist, what are the challenges? It took a long time to become an artist. As a young artist, there were certainly a lot of challenges that I had encountered, starting from the search for identity which makes the characteristics of an artist. Besides, you also need consistency in creating art, as well as a struggle in marketing it so that the works have value.

LOOK Having opened their second spa recently, Cozy is now pleased to share the great times with those who are in and around the Batu Belig area. Arriving at this new spa, guests will be greeted by a green lawn, with water features trickling water creating a soothing sound that welcomes. The spa itself has a very rustic feel in it. It is clean and neat, with the combination of blue and white enhancing the atmosphere. Cozy offers two types of treatment room; the three chair rooms with a total of 18 reclining chairs and one bed room with 19 beds. Last but not least, they also have a juice bar. FEEL The 60-minute “Cozy Scalp Sensation” (159k) really got us feeling over the moon, and it was indeed a great way to relieve tension from within our heads. We moved to the treatment room where we sat on a reclining chair, and the treatment began by stretching our shoulders. Our therapist’s hands then moved to our heads where our scalps got the best of this treatment. The scalp massage was performed with gentle moves applied on the right pressure points, bringing us to the deepest state of relaxation. They also worked on our feet, shoulders and neck. All the pressure felt just right, and we were finished off with warm towels. The treatment ended with more stretching, and we were then given a final hair wash which included hair conditioning, hair tonic application and blow drying. What a complete treatment for something that only mentions ‘scalp’ in its title, and it was genuinely a very good treatment.

INGREDIENTS For this treatment, Cozy offers nine types of hair products for the scalp massage. They are different products for differing hair conditions, and can be chosen personally by the guests. The first three are Cozy’s own natural blends which are combined with olive oil. The blends are banana and ginseng for natural hair, avocado and celery for dry hair, and lime leaf and aloe vera for the oily hair. The other six are produced by L’Oreal, with the options for those with normal to troubled hair. MAGIC What we love about this spa is their very personalized service, even when the treatment is done in a shared room. This includes an iPod handed to you which contains music to be played while you are being treated. Not to mention the enjoyable atmosphere which is supported by a brigade of friendly staff, nice design and charming smiles.
