Ku De Ta kicked off the main high season period with a dazzling Bikini Day Party, themed this year as the Love Generation Party. It was a gala show with dancers, fashion show, singers and DJs putting together one of the best Bikini Parties ever. Starting at 4pm meant there wasn’t much daylight nor bikinis in the crowd but it was a wellorchestrated event from start to finish. The week before W Bali put on their show of the year too with SPF also pulling out all the stops with a great lineup of DJs and a massive crowd in attendance. But this is all a precursor to what will be coming over the next week or so. This weekend Potato Head Beach Club has their turn and possibly one of the biggest shows they have put on with a two day, Saturday and Sunday event ready to take the roof off this year’s high season. Sunny Side Up Tropical Festival this year is a two-day music and culture feast featuring Mark Ronson on Saturday, Disclosure on the Sunday and a cast of super DJ producers before, during and after. More information is inside. There are a number of events around the Wednesday Merdeka holiday including a big one at Doublesix Rooftop with Alex Stein. The weekend after sees Ku De Ta’s next foray, The White Party hitting the shores of Seminyak on Saturday night, which we’re sure will be a total spectacle if the Bikini Party is anything to go by. tarting out life in Hong Kong as an exclusive group for carnivorous gourmands, The Butcher’s Club has now branched out to Bali, offering up a red-blooded mix of steaks, burgers and everything in-between. So far best known for it’s seriously gourmet burgers – washed down with top-end bourbon whiskeys, the butchers at the Butcher’s will soon be rolling out a new menu to include aged grain fed cuts of the finest imported steaks. As if that weren’t enough, a selection of pastas, salads and seafood will also be gracing the pages of the new list. A few nips and tucks to the huge venue (just on the corner of Cendrawsih and Petitenget) will also ensure plenty of interest in this already popular Seminyak favourite. Lucky enough to be given a sneak preview of what’s to come, myself and a friend meet the Butcher’s Club team one sunny Thursday lunchtime to get the lowdown on what’s in the pipeline, and check out a few of the newbie dishes (as well as a couple of old classics while we’re at it). Mindful of not filling up too fast, we stick to the sodas to start, although if you really want to jump in at the deep end the soda floats 35k and Jack Daniel’s Cola Slushy 75k will do the trick. Landing first on the table is a portion of the beautifully soft Japanese Fried Calamari. The battered rings literally melt in the mouth, helped along superbly by the yuzu dressing, furikake flakes and sweet kewpie mayo. Following hot on its heels comes

the Kale Caesar Salad with charred croutons, grated parmesan and grilled anchovies. Ideal as a light portion to share or something for the pescatarians, it’s as flavoursome as it is filling. The third and final sneaky peek comes in the form of the Wild Mushroom Bucatini, served carbonara style with creamy Italian white sauce, juicy portobello mushrooms and an egg yolk perched on top, ready to be mixed in for that extra touch. The crowning glory at Butcher’s is the new selection of dry–aged steaks, but even we’re a bit too early for those as plans for the grill are still a few weeks off. In the meantime we wrap our gobs around a couple of The Butcher’s Club’s famous burgers. Namely: their signature The Burger (120k), and the Little Miss Piggy (135k). The original is a faultless take on the classic burger, with bacon rashers, melted cheddar and special sauce oozing between tomatoes and pickles, while the Miss Piggy is a gluttonous mix of crispy pork belly, Asian slaw and tempura onion rings. We forego the desserts (again, plenty of new exciting things in the pipeline here), and stick to a round of icy cold Bintangs 35k – arguably the ideal thing to wash down a burger. Keep your eye on The Butcher’s Club, there’s plenty to get excited about.

Kopi Pot is one of those timeless escapes in Kuta that has changed little since Kuta was the center of Bali’s tourist world. It’s lush al fresco dining area is a nice throwback compared to the concrete jungle Kuta has become. Just as classic as the restaurant itself, their Coq au Vin (83k) is a solid dish with little frills to get in the way of its tasty goodness. This French staple is a chicken hot pot baked in red wine with mushrooms, onions, and bacon with a near fully loaded baked potato on the side. The dish was hearty and savory and the baked potato has was buttered with sour cream and bacon bits. The large pieces of chicken and chunky vegetables were beyond satisfying and is the very definition of comfort food.

BANG BANG Bang Bang is Sky Garden’s new premium lounge on the third floor of the sprawling mega club. It’s an upscale establishment catering to the finer tastes in Kuta who want something a little more sophisticated than the usual Sky Garden surfie punter crowd. You’ll have to be dressed to impress at this new venue within a venue and there is a separate elevator entrance direct to the club from the gorund floor.
Size: It accommodates an estimated 250 classy people. Music: Hip hop, RnB, and live music. Anything inner city and urban to the max. They also have a live top 40 band called One Signature from Canada and resident DJ Mishtee from Oz. Crowd: You have to be 25 or older to
enter. Tourists and locals alike, a little bit of a more refined crowd compared to the rest of Sky Garden.

THE AVALANCHES Wildflower
Ahhh, Frankie Sinatra. ‘Ol Blue Eyes. Rat Packer. Mobster’s mate. And now the namesake for possibly the world’s catchiest tune. Yes, everyone’s favourite crooner is back in spirit, comin’ in yer ears thanks to Melbourne mix-masters The Avalanches. Skip directly to track three of newest LP Wildflower and marvel at how quickly this earworm works its way into your brain. You will be humming this FOREVER. Luckily, it’s really good - sorta like Eminem doing ‘The Charleston’ - and so is the rest of the album for that matter. After a 16-year hiatus, numerous lineup reshuffles and a ridiculously long gestation period (recordings began for Wildflower back in 2005), the eclectic Aussie trio has delivered what I’m calling 2016’s most fun album. A riotous ride through a kaleidoscope of sampled beats; it’s a natural successor to 2000’s Since I Left You in style, substance and texture, despite the extended time gap. Naysayers might have a point with the complaint that the two albums are just a little bit too similar, but what sets

Wildflower apart is the healthy guest star list, including Biz Markie, Chaz Bundick of Toro Y Moi, Jonathan Donahue of Mercury Rev and Detroit rapper Danny Brown on the inescapable “Frankie Sinatra”. The standard version sports a massive 22 “songs”, but this is really one of those albums where you should just stick it on from start to finish and ignore the individual tracks. There’s only a couple of obvious singles (“Because I’m Me”, “Colours”), but that’s cool because the rest of it meshes together to give the effect of a DJ set ‘found sound’ mix-a-thon instead of a studio album. If you’re looking for deep and meaningful here, forget it because that’s not the point with The Avalanches. What it lacks in substance, Wildflower more than makes up for with its incessant optimism. If you like your choons brimming with sunbeams and rainbows, this is the album for you. If you’re a miserable, naysaying git; play it anyway – it’ll probably cheer you up. Dan Ashcroft.

InhaleExhale Now – October 5 Titian Art Space Titian Art Space is back to present paintings by Bruce Granquist in an exhibition called “Inhale-Exhale”. The exhibition showcases an apparently unrelated collective of images which can be roughly divided into two groups; naturalistic illustrations and abstract calligraphic paintings. The theme itself represents the parts of process on how the artist get the works done. The ‘inhale’ represents the first part when the artist observes and absorbs the complexity of the world at large to describe the object portrayed in his illustrations. Citra Sasmita Meet Citra Sasmita, a young Balinese artist who hails from Tabanan. A gifted, talented woman, she uses her art not merely to find an aesthetic purpose, but also to deliver her outspoken protest of patriarchal culture. What she has been creating is a collection of bold, provocative works, frequently portraying women and questioning their position in society. How did you get into the art world? I first got into it when I had the opportunity to create the illustrations for a short stories book, as well as Bali Post’s weekly short stories in 2012. I was fond of visual art since childhood. I’m not an art school graduate, but physics which is related to exact science, in fact, has helped me in formulating ideas before I put it into a medium. How is the artistic process in completing your art? It’s not simply about how to display the visuals, but also how to provide something that is relevant and contextual to social problems today, so that it can be pondered and interpreted by the broader public. That’s where art has a multi-dimensional function, capable of covering the matters of space and time to be responded to by all senses. It’s not only about finishing twodimensional images which can be seen only by the eyes.
You choose women as the subjects in most of your works. What is the background, and what do you want to convey through this depiction? All this time, I’ve been intensely discussing the identity, stigma and sexuality which I represent through female bodies. I realize that as a woman, there are many things that have been buried in the area of domestication, both in terms of politics and history, as well as understanding people’s habits and their identity formation which are conditioned by the patriarchal system. It’s important for me to explore and understand these, and creating art is a very pleasant way to communicate the problems, as well as to analyze women’s issues. And how do you embrace women through your art? The success of a piece for me is the critique and curiosity, so that’s when the discussions and dialectics about these ideas happen. The female-themed works that I create often come from cases of violence, as well as the analysis in the social space that not all women are aware of. Through the works, I, as a facilitator, seek to build awareness and empathy for other women. Tell us about the “Celebrating Murni” you are involved in. My exhibited work, which I created in response to “Celebrating Murni”, has the same context in discussing sexuality. Through the idiom of the vagina, we equally give the complexities of sexuality itself. It’s not only associated with sexual activity; it implicitly also represents a parameter in social class, a desire to form false identity, the fetishism that overshadows individuals to actualize themselves in the social space. www.thebeatbali.com

The massage used traditional techniques which consisted of firm finger, palm and elbow pressure that worked on the perfect points precisely, resulting in relieved muscles. It was followed by an aromatic body scrub, ended with a cup of warm
ginger while we soak in a warm, moisturizing milk and flower bath. INGREDIENTS Green Apple Spa lets their guests to pick one out of the three aromatherapy oils for this treatment. Jasmine oil, with its soothing fragrance, is used to help increase alertness and arousal. Sandalwood oil, with its exotic fragrance, can be very helpful in managing stress. Mega Semadhi Claims 2016 Rip Curl Cup Local surfer bests Mason Ho, Damien Hobgood and Clay Marzo in the final to claim his second title at Padang Padang In an event dominated by the international invitees, Mega Semadhi was the lone local Indonesian surfer to reach the final of the 2016 Rip Curl Cup at Padang Padang. But when the final horn sounded, it was Mega who came out on top, claiming his second title in the past three times the ultimate tuberiding contest has been held. After a slow start in his opening round heat in which he took off on several smaller closeouts, Semadhi eventually found his rhythm. He would manage to survive the opening rounds and go on to win his semifinal heat with a perfect 10 and the highest heat total of the round. In the final, Semadhi won the heat with a 9 and sealed the deal with another perfect 10 with six minutes remaining, leaving Mason

Ho (HAW) and Clay Marzo (HAW) comboed, and Damien Hobgood (USA) needing a 9.41 that he could never find. In the end, Mega was hoisted to victory in front of a raucous crowd, followed by Hobgood in second place, Ho in third and Marzo in fourth. “In my first heat I was really nervous and really sloppy,” said Mega, who previously won the 2013 Rip Curl Cup. “I was going on small waves, bad waves and whitewash. Luckily I got my head together and got through and was able to get into a rhythm the rest of the contest.” At the outset, international invitees Hobgood, Marzo and Ho looked like the surfers to beat

in the event. Hobgood dominated the opening rounds, winning both his Round 1 and 2 heats and posting the highest heat total of the opening rounds. Ho meanwhile put together a spectacular performance, capping off multiple deep backhand drainers with skate-inspired aerials on the end section and wowing the massive crowds on hand at Padang Padang and watching on the webcast. “This is one of the best contests in the world,” Ho said, “right beside the Pipe Masters and The Eddie. I wish I had the words to describe how much fun that was.” It certainly was another epic showcase for the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang. The day saw four perfect 10 barrels, including an impossibly
