Live music seems to be coming back in a big way in Bali, with new spots opening up all over town and they all seem to be getting busy. This Saturday night we have a huge event for live music and Jazz aficionados up on the rooftop of Doublesix Resort on Double Six Beach, with London based funk specialists PB Underground playing live with friends who are still in the country after the Java Jazz festival last weekend in Jakarta. This is surely going to be a treat for all the people looking to get their funk or jazz on in a very live way. It’s got quite a lovely view up there too. A new Jazz club also opened last week on Jalan Petitenget called Paris Cat Jazz Club, which has a sister-club down in Melbourne. It’s sure to be another top spot for live music. Also opening next week and also in Petitenget is a new club called 7 Elephant. We don’t know too much about it but we notice DJs Michaelis, Kusasi and Siviov are involved in the opening on Saturday night and when quizzed, the boss down there had this to say; “It’s More Than Meets The Eye.” Okay, so that means we all have to get down there to check it out for ourselves. That’s Saturday night from 9pm – you’ll find it right next to Sea Vu Play. Inside we talk to Arif Herwanto from BGM, who are holding their fantastic liquor exhibition again at The Trans next week. It was a great success last year and it’s free entry to all. We also learn some more about the coming Nyepi – the Day of Silence - which is coming soon to Bali, in a story inside. Check inside for all the details of what’s coming our way in entertainment over the next two weeks. Check on the website and our Instagram page for the updated list of events. Enjoy.

SCOOP RECHARGE YOUR SPIRIT AT THE 10THBALI SPIRIT FESTIVAL In a way, the Bali Spirit Festival can function as a great warm-up practice for Hari Raya Nyepi. It’ll be a week chock-full of soul-soothing activities— from yoga classes, song workshops, healing centers, to breathfest—that are all designed based on Balinese Hindu teachings to harmonize ourselves with our spiritual, social, and natural environment. But it’s gonna be fun, too! Especially with the lively Bhakti Night featuring the rhythms of Africa and the eclectic One World Stage Concert where artists like Xavier Rudd, Chugge Khan, and Amber Lily will make an appearance. The 10th Bali Spirit Festival will take place on March 19 – 26 in two outdoor venues (Bhanuswari Resort and Arma Museum & Resort). For more info, visit www.balispiritfestival.com.

ENJOY SPECIAL HOTEL PROMOS DURING NYEPI For Hari Raya Nyepi (Day of Silence) on March 28, several hotels will provide you the chance to experience it while still being able to enjoy your holiday perks. The One Legian has two special Deluxe/Superior Packages (starting from IDR1,550k) that includes lunch and dinner at their rooftop venues; Hard Rock Hotel Bali offers great room rates (from IDR1,350k++), Nyepi Set Lunch, and 20 percent off at Jamie’s Italian Kuta Beach; W Bali – Seminyak will serve a daily buffet breakfast at Fire, Buffet Nyepi Dinner, and a parade of ogoh-ogoh of their own; meanwhile Karma Kandara will give you a special two-night rate with complimentary gourmet dining and 20 percent discount at Karma Spa.

TASTE AND SAVOR WHAT’S IN STORE AT GOOD FRANCE 2017 Francophiles, rejoice! For the third time, the food festival Good France (or Goût de France) will tickle your appetite by rolling out the crème de la crème of French gastronomy prepared by some of the best chefs out there. Held by the Institut Français d’Indonésie (IFI) and the French Embassy, the festival will take place in 150 countries in 200 restaurants around the world on March 21. To get a taste of it in Bali just head off to Husk Restaurant and Teatro Gastroteque in Seminyak; Jimbaran Gardens at the Intercontinental Bali Resort; Mozaic and CasCades at Ubud; and Cut Catch Cucina at Sofitel Nusa Dua Bali. Bon appetite!

R.O.L.E FOUNDATION PARTNERS WITH DANISH EMBASSY FOR ZERO WASTE TO OCEAN PROGRAM Here’s a “disturbing” piece of trivia: there are 1,800,000 cubic meters of waste being dumped illegally per year in Bali, and during the rainy season, these solid wastes—plastic, trace metals, artificial rubber, styrofoam, etc—will make their way onto the beaches. That’s why the Bali-based R.O.L.E Foundation has created the Zero Waste to Oceans program and recently they partnered with the Danish Embassy in Jakarta for a two-week awareness campaign concerning the waste challenges in Bali and its impact on tourism, fishing industry, and public health. “Let’s respect Bali island and make its seas, reefs, beaches, and lands beautiful again,” says ROLE. For more info, go to www.rolefoundation.org.

DISCOVERING THE STORY BEHIND EVERY FLAVOR AT UBUD FOOD FESTIVAL 2017 Another highly-anticipated food fest is Ubud Food Festival that will re-open for business on May 12–14. Featuring celebrated chefs, international restaurateurs, and industry heavy-weights, the three-year-old event bears the theme “Every Flavor is a Story” that will highlight every story behind Indonesia’s culinary heritage, extracting the archipelago’s history, geography, and diverse cultures. The festival will release their full line-up of guests mid-March but for now you can get a 20 percent off their FoodLovers Pass that’ll give you complete access to the UFF17 Kitchen Stage. BEST OF SPIRITS For the person who loves a quality drink, Mandiri Graha Persada’s Excellent Exhibition Roadshow 2017 should not be missed: a one-day display of over 100 different wines, spirits, and imported beers, supported by 28 principals from France, Italy, Australia, Germany, USA, and many more. The event aims to expand your knowledge in picking the best brands, encouraging your inner mixologist, and, most importantly, to show that liquor is made to savour. The Roadshow—spanning Jakarta, Yogyakarta Surabaya, and Bali—will be the second time held by liquor distributor, Mandiri Graha Persada (MGP), and this year once again it will take place at The Trans Resort Bali on March 15 from 2pm til 10pm. We met with Arif Herwanto, Wine Ambassador from Buana Graha Mandiri (MGP’s holding company), to discuss more. So tell us what to expect from the event? It’s going to be a showcase of our spirit, wine, and beer portfolio, and to introduce some new brands as well. We’re also going to talk about trends. The event is going to involve many of the decision makers who contribute to the tourism sector in Bali, and hopefully through them we can help support the tourism industry as well. This year we will feature more than 120 brands, and we’ll have a masterclass featuring mixologists and brand representatives.

like dark rum, single-malt whiskey, and cocktails like Negroni. But in general, white spirits such as vodka and gin are still a mainstay.

As you mentioned the exhibition is also about discussing new trends, can you tell us what we’ll be seeing this year? Well of course sometimes the trends are what the outlets—like hotels and restaurants—are offering to their guests and then they’ll see whether it catches on. For the moment, we’re noticing a growing popularity of brown spirits

Surely the alcohol industry in Bali is bigger than other cities in Indonesia? Yes, but the pattern of the customers varies. For example, people in Jakarta nowadays are more sophisticated, high-end, more premium (therefore more critical), and they are repeaters, whereas in Bali the demands are more for entry level brands though they are generated at BeQRious.com

A DAY OF SILENCE Picture this: the absence of people and noise, deserted streets (even Kuta!) and later on, pitch black. Silent night. That’s what is going to happen on Hari Raya Nyepi (Day of Silence) on the usually very busy island of Bali on March 28. It’s a day where even the airport is closed, save for emergencies.

Y

ou might feel anxiety in the face of fullon silence and non-activity, not to mention the looming darkness as you’re not even allowed to light a candle at night. But look past the silence and you’ll learn to appreciate the moment. It’s the Balinese Hindu’s New Year, or the turn of the Saka year, that this year will fall on a Tuesday, celebrating 1 Saka 1939. From 6am to 6am the next day, it’ll be a day of complete self-reflection. “It’s a time for introspection regarding what we have done in the past year, and evaluate what can we do to change the negative into something positive in this new year,” says I Mangku Gede, pemangku pura (a Balinese ceremonial leader). Prior to Nyepi, rituals will be performed (Melasti and Bhuta Yajna) that end with the symbolic burning of ogoh-ogoh - giant effigies that represents the “demons” in our lives. Afterwards comes the Day of Silence, in which

you must follow the sacred rules of Catur Berata Penyepian: Amati Gni (no fire/light), Amati Karya (no working), Amati Lelungaan (no traveling), and Amati Lelanguan (no revelry or self-entertainment). For Bali first-timers, it’ll probably come as a culture shock: no motorbiking, no shopping, no partying, in short—no gallivanting about. It’ll truly be a day to chill, a precious moment for you to reflect on the past to manifest a better future. “Let your mind be at ease and unburden with extraneous thoughts,” I Mangku Gede adds. “Moreover it’ll be a good way to practice your tolerance, and learn to respect the diversity of customs of each religion.” You may prefer to stay cooped up in your cozy hotel room with the lights on and the TV playing (albeit with a low volume), but why not try to participate instead? With all the noise happening in the world, sometimes silence is still golden.

Quality, authentic Balinese dishes await at Dhanya restaurant – a hidden treasure tucked below the impressive lobby of the Golden Tulip Jineng resort on Sunset Road.

U

sed to store rice during harvest time, a jineng is a traditional Balinese structure that features a high thatched roof to allow air to circulate around the gathered rice. True to its name, the lobby at Golden Tulip Jineng pays homage to this, with its own take on this unique building. Fittingly, the menu at the resort’s signature Dhanya restaurant also honours the Balinese way, with a special megibung section to compliment all the usual western favourites such as salads, sandwiches, pastas and pizzas. Essentially a selection of Asian tapas, the megibung is a feast of flavours, traditionally

found in the Karangasem region of east Bali. Small plates featuring a huge mix of meat, veggies and condiments are shared out in a kind of mix’n’match style of dining. At Dhanya, there are over 20 dishes to choose from, all ranging from between 10k++ to 55k++ in price. On the day I visit, I have a couple of friends in tow, so we go all out and order one of everything – something I’ve always wanted to do in a restaurant. While we wait for the food, we cool off with a few drinks from the vast beverage menu, eventually deciding on a Minty Strawberry Iced Tea (38k++), a creamy

Orange Frappuccino (38k++) and a Strawberry Mojito (95k++). They hit the spot perfectly, providing some much needed refreshment from the current run of super hot weather we’ve been having. Soon enough, the food arrives, and arrives, and arrives. It seems to be never ending, and we keep rearranging the table until it is literally bursting with tasty morsels. Melinjo crackers, shredded Balinese Ayam Betutu, tender cubes of Beef Rendang, Urap salad, three kinds of sambal… The list goes on and on – it really is impressive, and we waste no time digging in and sampling a bit of everything. As an added

bonus, a large proportion of the dishes are gluten free – great if you’re watching your wheat. Between three people, ordering one of everything seems to be the go, as we just about manage to polish off the whole lot with space to spare for a cheeky dessert of Mango Delight (35k++) to share. Dhanya restaurant is open from 6.30am every day for buffet breakfast (special 72k nett price for walk in diners), with the lunch/ dinner menu featuring the megibung options kicking off from 10.30am. NU LAZER Buffalo Chicken Wings

TODAY’s SPECIALS

Nu Lazer has been standing strong like a loyal old guard on Jalan Danau Tamblingan - Sanur’s nightly entertainment strip, for more or less 15 years now. A one stop entertainment venue ranging from restaurant, sports bar, and club with different types of entertainment where you can enjoy live music bands and DJ sets. In the near future, the venue will focus more on their restaurant side, but in the meantime, one of their food specialities you can enjoy with your drinks is the Buffalo Chicken Wings with ranch dressing. Of course there are also other, more ‘serious’ offerings on their menu, but for a sports bar, a good drinking snack is as essential as the beer they offer, and these chicken wings really hits the spot: A good combination of sweet and savoury, which makes you want more and more of it. Follow their instagram @nulazerbali for more information.

Gardin Bistro & Pattisserie Coyote Margarita Frozen margaritas are a heaven-sent tropical treat—a sort of slushy with oomph. The Coyote Margarita (IDR125k) courtesy of Gardin Bistro & Pattisserie, other than being your typical perfect-for-asunny-day drink, might make the merriment process turn a lot quicker. Why? The high pile of crushed ice kind of forces you to sip it faster due to the quick-melting. It’s clever, though. The frozen cocktail is still a concoction of tequila, triple sec, and topped prettily with a fresh peach; we’d have to say the blend is quite smooth. It’s probably a drink more for the fairer sex and serves as a great warm-up before you saunter over to Mirror.

aramac fashion brand was a part of the Level 21 Street Style Fashion Week last month and we had a quick chat with the designer and owner of the brand, Rara McAloney about the brand. Raramac first started in October 2016, but Rara has been learning the trade for many years. “I have learned fashion designing since 2005 and have been making dresses since then. I was also working as a fashion stylist. Later I studied design with Susan Budihardjo, and after with a UK and LA fashion designer,” she told the beat. And what is your inspiration? “Simple inspires me. I’m just happy to make women look beautiful & fashionable. Elie Saab is one of my favorite designers.” The Denpasar Street Style Fashion Week featured many local designers, music, chat forums and contests. And how was the show? “It was great!” said Rara. CD REVIEW

7/10

THE XX

xx-tatic

I See You Right from the opening fanfare of ‘Dangerous’ you can tell that there’s something different happening on The xx’s third LP. Eagle-eared listeners might notice that unlike their previous two albums, ‘I See You’ is actually upbeat, groovy, and – incredibly for the ever-gloomy Wandsworth trio - almost happy. The hushed minimalism of their 2009 debut and its follow up ‘Coexist’ was more concerned with the silent spaces in between the notes rather than getting any parties going. Cue Jamie Smith – the band’s mixmaster/ musical savant, and the expansive, joy-filled euphoria of his 2015 solo effort ‘In Colour’. Free to follow his own direction, the album took The xx sound to new levels, as inclusively as possible. Fellow band members Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim willingly came along for the ride (both contributed vocals), but it was ultimately Smith’s project, and has clearly influenced ‘I See You’ in a number of ways.

‘Say Something Loving’ bounces between ecstatic, clubby buildups and dub-infused choruses effortlessly, ‘Lips’ resembles something Sia might have penned for Shakira, while the first single ‘On Hold’ follows the lead of their famous ‘Intro’ and takes it up a few levels of cheerful. It’s all relative of course, when compared to the sparse, chronically introverted first two albums. ‘Performance’, ‘Test Me’ and the slow-moving ‘Brave For You’ are all admittedly far from upbeat, but when held up against previous material, they feel positively elated. The upshot is the feeling that Croft, Sim & Smith have discovered the perfect direction in which to advance their music without abandoning the elements that make The xx so great, and that really is the beauty of ‘I See You’. ART

Atmi Kristiadewi Children are what inspires Atmi Kristiadewi the most. As an artist, she takes her own experiences as the guideline through her artistic journey. On the other hand, being involved in a child’s innocent world has opened up her horizons, leading her to depict her thoughts through a ‘naïve’ portrayal of humans and other living things. How did you get into the worlds of art? I jumped into this world due to my excitement while watching Japanese anime, and I pursued art purely as my hobby. Within my main family, there is nobody with a formal background in art; only my uncle is an artist. Fortunately, my father is really supportive. He supported my decision to pursue this childhood dream. I wanted to be like my uncle, to have works that can inspire people. So, did you pursue a formal education in order to be an artist? I did. After finishing junior high school in 2005, I continued my studies at the High School of Arts in Batubulan. Finishing high school, I was given two options on where to continue my studies: It’s either the Institute of Arts Indonesia in Denpasar or the Institute of Teacher Training and Education Bali. After so much consideration, I picked the latter option as I wanted to share my experiences by being a teacher. While studying, I also taught, trying to understand children, as well as learning my own painting characteristics. I finished my studies three and a half years later. A few years later, I joined the Institute of Arts Indonesia in Denpasar to get my master’s degree, and I graduated last June.

Where do you find your inspiration? Inspiration normally comes from my students. It’s free, and has no burden. The children give me many experiences through their world which is full of honesty and innocence. Additionally, inspiration also comes from my surroundings - when I’m walking my dog, from my friends through their critiques, and from my husband who is also an artist. What processes do you use to get these works done? When I draw, the sketches unconsciously turn out to be an innocent image. This naïve style might be considered trivial, but it’s actually not as easy as it seems. As a young adult, I was required to feel and be an ‘innocent kid’ in order to realize my idea. After gaining experiences in the world of children, it happens naturally and wildly. No wonder that your works seem innocent and naive. Can we say that this is your character? I’m still finding my true character actually. However, when people see my paintings, they will normally say that my character lies in the colors that I use. It’s bright and sweet, and it shows no burden. Even when anger exists, it turns out to be vague due to the positive mood that is tucked within it, portrayed by these colors. www.thebeatbali.com

ACCOMMODATION

THE ONE LEGIAN A lifest yle h o tel fo r h ip u r b ani te s

LOCATION If you love crowds and funky happenings then a stay at the Legian area would be ideal and The One Legian is perched perfectly right in the heart of it. It’s a mere 15-minutes strolling distance to Kuta Beach and around 15-minutes’ drive to Ngurah Rai airport. Not to mention the Kuta – Legian streets are lined with hip cafes and restaurants, as well as boutique outlets, surf stores, and souvenir shops. For the unapologetic nocturnal animals, live music venues, bars, and clubs will keep your spirits high all night long. LOOK Very urban chic could describe it. The four-star hotel is a “reincarnation” of The 101 Legian, now carrying the new concept of New Urban Legian that’s naturally complemented with striking Balinese accents. The elegant, openair lobby has an appealing wood panel ceiling that gives off a warm, cozy glow throughout the hotel. The aesthetics are translated over to the restaurants and their colorful, minimalist-designed rooms as well. ATMOSPHERE Lively yet can still offer you a nice escape from the innumerable going-ons outside, best exemplified by their two swimming pools: for a quiet, intimate dip go to Romeo Pool, or if you prefer something a bit rowdy then Skypool is where all the happening pool parties will be. Don’t miss their monthly signature Zodiac Sky Pool Party and the Urban Sunset Breeze (USB) to give your stay-in a bit of splashy fun.

FEATURES The One Legian is definitely a one-stop entertainment hotel. For dining options head off to the Rooftop Dine & Music Lounge for an open-air, sunset-lit feast (where they’ll sometimes screen a Movie Night Experience); De Basilico Kitchen & Bar for a deliciously eclectic menu (we’re loving the rustic wood décor of this spot); and The Deck for a taste of urban street food. Meanwhile for wellnessand fit-seekers spend your precious down time at The SPA, mini gym, and the aforementioned two outdoor swimming pools. As for the rooms on offer, The One Legian features a total of 300 rooms, with six accommodation types, which are The ONE Superior Room, The ONE Deluxe Room, The ONE Deluxe Balcony, The ONE Deluxe Pool Access, The ONE Deluxe Family, and The ONE Deluxe Suite, all equipped with Broadband Wi-Fi internet access, a smart bathroom and King and Hollywood Twins as a bed configuration. For sure, the Indonesian Leading Lifestyle Hotel Award recipient’s aim to represent a New Urban Legian is right on the money — the chic and trendy vibe fits like a glove with its oh-so-hip surroundings. Did we mention there’s a Starbucks too? PRICE POINT $$ The ONE Legian Jalan Legian No. 117, Badung T. 3001 101 www.theonelegian.com

SPA

AWAY SPA This spa is surely one of the best in Bali.

LOOK Located on the ground floor of W Retreat & Spa Bali, Away Spa has an extraordinary vibe, with a combination of stylish interiors, vivid colors, playful scents, imaginative sounds and energizing lights that treat all senses. As for the facilities, this lavish spa houses three single rooms with meditation platforms, two double rooms with vitality baths, two spa suites with wet and dry treatment areas, a beauty room and a hair salon. FEEL After enjoying some time in the detox room, trying out the oxygen mask and sipping on a detox drink, our friendly therapist came and led us to the treatment room. We chose the Away Spa’s signature “Morning After” (1,300k); a treatment that is designed for guests who wish to detox from a long, playful night out. However, it is also perfect for those who are after a comprehensive massage to prepare themselves for what comes next. Seated on a comfy chair in our room, the treatment began with the ritual foot bath. While we got our feet cleansed, our therapist asked if we needed the prelude session. Done prior to the main treatment, the prelude session aims to promote agility in movement, increases flexibility and stimulates blood circulation through proper stretching. Thus, it gets our body really prepared for the main treatment. The therapeutic massage then started. It was so deep, combining lots of stretching with fingers, hands and forearm pressures. It worked deeply to relieve the muscular aches and pains, with the help of aromatic herbal oil that soothed our minds. The treatment lasted for 90 minutes, and it was totally healing as we felt that our body had become so much lighter. We ended our experience with another glass of detox drink. INGREDIENTS For this treatment, Away Spa utilizes a special

massage oil which contains rosemary and lime. For a total energizing effect, this herbal massage oil has also been infused with fresh ingredients such as rosemary, basil, lime and mint leaves. MAGIC Fun and fabulous, this luxury spa is a fantastic haven in which to pause and rewind. We have to admit that they have a very complete menu, with various options. It gets better with the complete facilities they offer, including in the changing rooms such as hot stone baths and hydro jet cold plunges which can be enjoyed before or after. There is also a chill bar and refuel area where guests can sit back and relax with a selection of refreshing beverages, made to complete the whole experience. Furthermore, Away Spa is also open 24 hours, meaning that you can get treated and spoiled anytime you wish!
