EDDIE THONEICK

Eddie Thoneick is a name that many find synonymous to high octane, happy house music. German born Eddie has been in the game for about two decades, starting off his coveted DJing career by winning a local DJ contest in his native Dusseldorf. Eddie has been demolishing crowds all over the planet ever since, shifting between playing live and studio life, focusing on his productions which have set international charts ablaze with a wide spread arsenal of remixes and collaborations among house music legends like Bob Sinclair, David Guetta, Armand Van Helden and his buddy Erick Morillo. After some time off in the studio, Eddie is back on track and letting the world know he is back in action! This time with more power than ever – catch him at The Beat Party at Sky Garden on April 7! Hey Eddie, how’s your week treating you? Hey guys. Everything is great. Hectic, but in a positive way. The house scene has evolved a lot, in what ways have you had to evolve? Well, it has always been this way. I´ve been living in this scene for the last 23 years and seen a lot of changes. I´ve experienced that with every new generation coming every couple of years, there comes a new wave of sound. But the music has always been going back to the basics of house music. Of course in an evolved way. I think the challenge of every producer that wants to stay in the game is about staying innovative, which sometimes can be a struggle. Take a look at the scene right now. House Music is all over the place.

54

www.thebeatbali.com

But now for example they call it Future House. For the kids it´s brand new, something fresh. To me it´s an evolved form of classic, swinging US house. Updated, stronger rhythms and bigger sounds. I love to be in an ongoing challenge with every production. Keeping music production in a safe zone with every production always is a step back. generated at BeQRious.com

Naughty But nice From a modest warung in Ubud—the lovechild of avid cook, Isnuri Suryatmi, and her foodie (late) husband, Brian Kenney Aldinger - Naughty Nuri’s has become a hot franchise flaming the craze for their BBQ Pork Spare Ribs, and you may be surprised to discover how good—and world famous—their dirty martini is. Now there’s a seven-month old Naughty Nuri’s in Seminyak (Jalan Mertanadi No.62, Kerobokan), which is already a favorite dining spot for locals and tourists alike in the area. We spoke with the franchise owner, Ed Balma from the U.S., about his inclusion on the Naughty list.

So tell us how you became a franchisee of Naughty Nuri? Well I’ve always known Naughty Nuri’s since its early days in 1995 and I’m close with the owners, so when the opportunity came up—which was about two years ago—when they were looking to open another place in Seminyak or Kerobokan, I said, Oh wait a minute—I’ll take that (laughs). Even though now I work in the musical instruments export industry, I actually have a 25-year background in restaurant management. I was a high-end chef and a country manager in America and in Jakarta I worked for the Ponderosa Group. But what was the main reason that lured you back into the F&B industry? The only reason why I wanted to do the restaurant was because I know it has something that works, it’s a proven thing. We put the sign up and 100 people a day asked us if we were open. See, that’s the power in the brand.

What was your first impression of Naughty Nuri’s? Funnily enough I’d never actually tried their ribs until two years ago (laughs), but then I tried it—and it was really good! When I went to Naughty Nuri’s at the beginning I always ordered the fillet mignon, which I think is the best, the burger, the tuna, and they still have until today their Tuna Night every Thursday and the sashimi is very popular. You know I’ve tried all kinds of barbeque all over America, and Nuri’s barbeque is quite unique. It’s different than [the one’s we have in] America, it’s a more tomato-y, smoky sauce, and people love it. In some places you get kind of tired with the dish, but not this one. generated at BeQRious.com Continued here... get out your phones!

s many others come and go, the iconic Hard Rock Hotel has been keeping watch over Kuta Beach for nearly twenty years. That equates to a lot of guests who need feeding, but for almost two decades The Hard Rock Hotel’s Starz Diner has ably been handling the job. Located just a few steps away from the famous Centerstage lobby area, the huge restaurant features ample seating both indoors and out, with extensive buffet options that cover breakfast and dinner, and an a la carte menu filling in for the lunch session. In-keeping with the Hard Rock’s rep as a global brand, the theme at Starz Diner offers a taste of nations – with a particular focus on Indonesian/Balinese, Indian and Chinese cuisine. Working under Executive Chef Joachim Kreisel, an international team of specialist chefs – each one bringing their own local expertise to the kitchen - ensures that everything remains as authentic as can be. For example Balinese chef Pak Putra, who has worked at Hard Rock for over five years, uses recipes for his native dishes passed down to him from his grandmother. One of these is the phenomenal Ayam Betutu (125k++) – a Balinese classic of steamed chicken in spices, long beans, sambal chili served with rice. It’s

To double down on the Bali eats, check out Wednesdays at Starz Diner, which is dedicated to another local favourite: Babi Guling or suckling pig – also cooked up the traditional way by Pak Putra. He even has his own familyrun warung out in the Batu Bulan area of Denpasar – worth looking out for if you’re headed out that way. Stopping by Starz early afternoon, I decide to check out the muchrecommended betutu, while my buddy goes for the Sop Buntut (135k++) – tender boiled oxtail in a rich broth with veggies, fresh lime and green chili sambal. Both go down a treat, as does the massive slice of Oreo Cheesecake (60k++), which we split. The dinner buffet kicks off at 6.30pm and runs until 9.30pm – meaning a whole three hours of grazing for just 250k++/person (50% off for kids under 12). Expect all the Indonesian classics alongside Chinese, Indian and European options like the hugely popular live cooking station that serves up up pasta dishes and other tasty morsels. Savvy diners should take advantage of the Starz Diner’s ‘early bird’ offer, where booking the day before you dine means the cost is just 175k++/person. Ramp it up to the F&B package (500k++/ person) for a selection of free-flow beers, wines, cocktails and soft drinks to really make an evening of it. Dan Ashcroft

Rumahan bebek ungkep rempah rumahan

TODAY’s SPECIALS

Rumahan serves a mix of South East Asian food, which means food adorned with herbs and spices, exotic both in aroma and ingredients. Such is the case with the ‘Bebek Ungkep Rempah Rumahan’ which is a slow braised duck dish. As it was served, steaming hot on the table, the spicy aroma mixed with the scent of the steamed banana leafs which wrapped the duck while it was covered by herbs and spices and braised overnight. The result is a deliciously tender duck with a less fatty taste. The dish was accompanied by a small portion of snake bean plecing, which is a variation of the local vegetable side dish placing kangkung, but with snake bean replacing the water spinach. Also served with it is the sambal goreng bongkot, which were emphasised by the freshly exotic taste of the local indonesian flower named kecombrang or bongkot, also known as ginger flower. The set dish was then complimented with a light but savoury papaya & jackfruit soup. All in all, the food is a perfect example of the meeting of traditional & contemporary South Asian cooking, with the very reasonable price of Rp. 65.000++.

Ryoshi Strawberry Chūhai Apart from sake, shochu is another favorite alcoholic beverage hailing from Japan. And it’s quite versatile: drink it dry, on the rocks, diluted with hot water, mixed with tea or fruit juice or beer. The mild, “earthy” taste is unassuming enough that it won’t overpower other flavors. Ryoshi’s Strawberry Chuhai (35k), is a refreshing and “laid back” drink made from a blend of shochu (Ryoshi’s own shochu brand, Sun), soda, lime, and strawberry juice. It’s a simple cocktail yet perfect for a sunny day. Kanpai!

CD REVIEW

WE ARE ELEPHANT

8/10

Safe Travels Immediately recognisable for not being elephants, We Are Elephants are in fact UK south coasters Ed Greenfield (vocals) and Joe White (guitars) – two accomplished musicians who have been separately bouncing around the Bournemouth live circuit for some time. Born out of a series of informal jam sessions, “Safe Travels” finds the pair joining forces (along with a little help from local gin baron Rupert Holloway on gob-iron and cellist Lillian Penner) to produce a collection of easy-going acoustic feel-good songs, inspired by their hometown of Bournemouth, Dorset. Drawing on their musical influences - think Gomez, Ben Howard, Damien Rice, Xavier Rudd and, to some extent, Jack Johnson - the album sticks to a familiar blueprint of roots, blues and folk sounds. Greenfield’s hushed vocals are easy on the ears - soft and inviting on the quieter numbers (“Only Love”, “Song For You”, “Low Tide”), but

still with enough gravitas to give clout to the more bluesy offerings like “The Beat” and the happy-go-lucky “Ears And Eyes”. Meanwhile multi-instrumentalist White strums, slides and fingerpicks his way through the album, adding in subtle harmonies when needed like on standout “Sinner” and the gorgeous freewheelin’ title track. Percussion is limited to handclaps, tambourines and a few drum taps, giving everything the kind of strippedback ambiance that can often be tricky to nail down. The layers are kept simple yet are skillfully built up, resulting in a range of songs that feel greater than the sum of their parts. For a self-produced debut LP “Safe Travels” sounds extremely well polished - coasting by as effortlessly as a summer jam session at the beach. In short: a dose of acoustic loveliness that is well worth a spin, especially when you can download it absolutely gratis through weareelephant.bandcamp.com Dan Ashcroft

Favorable Dates :30, 2, 4 Favorable Colors : Yellow &Red

ART

Ayu Feny Meet Ayu Feny, one of the most talented emerging female artists the island has. Born into a family of painters, it is no surprise that she has been painting since she was a little girl. Growing up with such talent, she continued to hone her skills to create better works. And here she is now, a young artist known for her distinctive, naĂŻve-looking paintings which she created simply to share her insights and thoughts about life. How do you find your inspiration, and what topics do you normally pursue? My inspiration comes when I look through the artworks in books or catalogs. Thanks to technology, there are also so many sources of information that contain outstanding artworks nowadays. These photos and videos shared help trigger my creativity, and from there, the ideas for my works arise. Meanwhile, the topics that appear in my works are normally about nature, city atmosphere, Balinese culture, fashion and many others that focus on my personal experiences. What is the process to create an artwork? For me, the process to create an artwork begins when I visit the place that sells tools and materials to paint. It has become one of my habits, and it also evokes a sense of happiness that triggers me to create a new artwork. It sounds strange, indeed, but I really enjoy it.

What are the characteristics of your art? Characteristics of my art are apparent in the depiction of feelings and expressions like pain and pleasure, and it all depends on the circumstances that I experience when painting. Not forgetting the main characteristic of my art which is the longnecked human. Generally, what do you want to convey through your exhibited works at Art Patio? These works are a depiction of my imagination about a life journey that I have experienced, which in essence is about women’s affection to men. I have also inserted a point about how valuable my partner is throughout my life journey since I met him for the first time nine years ago.

SPA

COCOON BEACH CLUB Not just a setting for fun pool parties and great dining, Cocoon also offers wonderful must-try massage treatments. LOOK Cocoon’s fun-in-the-sun vibe certainly makes it a cool place to lounge around day or night. One of the prominent fixtures in the Seminyak Beach area, the beach club offers a great cocktail list, delicious Mediterranean menu, and an infinity pool that plays host to all sorts of sunset parties. If you prefer to chill and get pampered, then try one of their massage treatments that you can enjoy open-air on the daybeds or in spacious cabanas. Yup, it’ll be a by-the-beach style treatment—but better! FEEL We gave the Foot Reflexology (180k) a shot: a 60-minute treatment that apart from being a simple good ol’ fashioned massage also utilizes two small wooden tools. The first was a hammer-like tool that our kind therapist used to “open” up the nerves by gently hitting it on the soles and toes (she’ll use it again later to “close” the nerves), then it’s followed by a solid foot massage to further relax our tired feet. The next tool is a wooden stick that she uses to apply pressures on certain points on our soles which correspond to a specific organ in our body from the reproductive organ, colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, heart, throat, ear and even to the cerebellum (or little brain). If you feel pain even with the slightest pressure—don’t panic! Our therapist explained that the pain might simply indicate an unfit or tired body. The treatment continued with a thoroughly satisfying massage of the whole leg area, as well as the back and shoulder.

INGREDIENTS The treatment only uses one massage oil with a mixture of the relaxing yet reinvigorating peppermint, lavender, and ginger. All three of these oils possess joint-relaxing and musclecooling properties with the ginger further helping in warming and thus opening and relaxing the body.

MAGIC Other than offering a good solid massage, the treatment may also give you a sort of wakeup call as it tells you which part of your body needs more attention. As a whole the sa treament is purely satisfying, especially since it concentrates on one of the most important— and busiest—parts of our body which are oddly often neglected: our feet. Give them a good spoil sometime—you’ll really start the day on the right foot! Cocoon Beach Club Jalan Double Six, Seminyak T. 731 266 www.cocoon-beach.com www.thebeatbali.com

GIZMOS Now any gas range can become a pizza oven! Preheating in 15 minutes, this small-but-mighty oven transforms your kitchen into a pizzeria, cooking up hot, delicious, perfectly-cooked pizzas in just minutes. With its heat-efficient design, it traps and reflects heat to harness the power of your gas range, creating an optimal cooking environment up to 600°F. Dual cordierite stones absorb the direct heat from the flame and redistribute it evenly, eliminating hot spots. The built-in thermometer lets you know when it’s time to cook, and the moisture vent on the top prevents your pizza from becoming soggy. Simply place the oven on top of your burner and turn it on. Pizza lovers worried about yet another kitchen device will be pleased by the compact and easy-to-store design, and love how fast and easy the oven will make their regular pizza nights. Accessories for the Stovetop Pizza Oven are also available for purchase and can be bought as a set, or individually. $179.99 from www. pizzacraft.com
