Marshmello sees himself as more of a producer than DJ and has kept his identity a secret, even though at last years EDC in Las Vegas, Tiesto revealed himself under the mask! (which ended up being a massive troll to all the fans around the world). The speculation continued, with fans and journalists coming down to some wild conclusions of him being Chris Comstock better known as DotCom or even a collection of DJs like Martin Garrix or Jauz all managed by Shalizi. But in reality, it doesn't even matter who is behind the mask, as long as the crowd enjoys themselves, right?! He/they have released

Rave Republic, established 2014, is holds club residencies in Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Taiwan, with more in the pipeline. the winners
THE beat awards 2017 Over 5000 votes were cast in The Beat Awards 2017 and the awards were presented at a spectacular Friday night event at Bang Bang in Sky Garden with many of the luminaries of Bali nightlife in attendance. Kicking off with our very own Beat girl Ochy and the band, then Flashback and the DJs Jason Stone and Sophie Visser who was also on violin made it quite a night. The Bang Bang dancers were also another hit. The awards were presented by MC Yola, and The Rep and DJ ST from The Bali Beats Radio Show. A lot of people attending were pleasantly surprised at how good Sky Garden and Bang Bang were on the night. And the official winners were...

GUIDE TO LEGIAN L
egian is sandwiched between two different worlds—Kuta and Seminyak—but has a whole life of its own. It’s a little quieter than its two neighbors but does have its rocking bars and restaurants and most of the better ones are full most evenings. There are fabulous beach clubs, fun sports bars and pubs (or Husband Day Care Center, as one bar puts it) and some rather decent eateries. It’s a great place to grab a bite and chug down a glass of ice cold beer, accompanied by your favorite team and band, both playing live. We’ve covered our favorite spots spread across the six main roads of the area: Padma, Padma Utara, Melasti, Sahadewa (or Garlic Lane), Werkudara (formerly known as Rum Jungle Road), and, of course, Jalan Legian. If you happen to be a Legian virgin, this list might prove more than useful…
Jl. Padma MOO MOO’S STEAKHOUSE BAR & GRILL Moo Moo’s serves one of the best steaks on the island. Plus, their two projectors and 14 plasma screens showing live sports will keep the vibe buzzing. If you are up for it, try finishing their T-Bone Challenge menu (1kg T-bone steak, golden fries, grilled corn, steamed veggies) in 30 minutes time and you’ll get a free certified T-shirt and your name etched on Moo Moo’s wall of fame. A great way to make a mark in life!
MOZZARELLA RESTAURANT & BAR For a bit of posh dining ambiance, Mozzarella has been a tourists’ favorite ever since they opened in 2009. Their menu leans on Western with a smattering of Asian, but their claim to fame seems to be their delicious Aglio Olio. Other than that, their steaks, salads, and signature cocktails are totally worth a try!
POSERS PUB & RESTAURANT Located at the corner of Padma and Padma Utara, Posers gives off an old time pub atmosphere with friendly service, and it’s always buzzing come sun down. The food and the ice cold beer are reasonably-priced, and interestingly one of their top dishes—aside from the burgers and other western menu—are the tom yum and beef rendang.
48
www.thebeatbali.com
FEATURE FAT BOWL Fat Bowl, in front of Padma Resort entrance, has a rather eclectic menu that mingles Japanese, pasta, and a variety of salads. The scene-stealer, though, is their 30cm diameter burger! It comes with one kilo of beef patty, four eggs, cheese, bacon strips, pineapple slices, pickles, and other green goodness. Prepare for other people coming over and wanting to take a pic of it.
AZUL BEACH CLUB Azul provides a good sunset gazing spot with a Tiki cocktail in hand. What sets them apart is their wonderful traditional bamboo structure, as well as their so-called “sunset pods” that give scenic views of the ocean. They serve really great food and their Tiki Bar is the first of its kind in Bali—and we just can’t get enough of their Nusa Cana Coconut Mojito! Watch out for live music events and their Sunday BBQ.
SKAI BEACH CLUB Another of our favorite beach clubs on Padma Beach is Skai Beach Club, which is part of Padma Resort Legian. The vibe is hip and fun, and their infinity pool makes for a great spot come evening. Awesome food and cocktails too.
Jl. Padma Utara Y BAR A full-on sports pub, the Y Bar is a nice joint to catch up on your AFL or NRL games. We’re loving the food here too, like the souvlaki, fish and chips, and burgers. And how’s this for a peculiar event: on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, they stage the (not so politically-correct) Midget Fun Boxing, complemented also with tiny-sized dancers. Don’t say there are no surprises in Legian. www.thebeatbali.com

FEATURE WARUNG YOGYA This simple warung has been a mainstay in Legian for about 20 years now. It’s still modest in size and affordable in price (IDR25k max). We recommend ordering Nasi Campur, a super generous portion of rice with shredded chicken, tempeh, tofu, hard-boiled egg, steamed veggies, and a separate bowl for sayur lodeh (vegetables with spicy coconut gravy).
ROMEOS BAR & GRILLERY Romeos (part of Ossotel) is one of the chicest dining spots in Padma Utara, offering décor and delectable menu, especially if you order their Romeo Mix Grill of prime cuts, pork ribs, and seafood. They also have a great selection of cocktails (courtesy of Londonbased mixologist, Tim Adams), and their Beer Pong is a hoot!
SAMMY’S In the middle of rows of stores, restos, and shops, you can’t miss Sammy’s. It’s actually quite small but from the front it has a unique hut-like shape. It’s one of the favorite dining spots for expats staying in the area since it offers great food with affordable prices. Try their chicken wings and fresh salads.
POCO LOCO Pass Poco Loco and you’ll be tempted to stop by simply because of the greetings of their friendly sombrero-wearing staff. The Mexican Kitchen & Bar is one of the most popular Mexican restos in Bali and has been there for two decades. They must be doing something right, and one thing for sure is they’ve got a killer Fajita platter. Fun times and good Mex is guaranteed at this institution.

FEATURE Jl. Legian LAYALI If samosas and baba ganoushes are your comfort food then head on down to Layali. The Lebanese restaurant nails down the Middle Eastern ambience perfectly, with the bonus being the delectable and authentic food (we love their hommus and shish kebab lamb). Even better: the price range are totally friendly! Their Shisha Lounge—with large low tables surrounded by ground cushions— is fun for casual hangouts.
KOPI POT It’s coffee time! And the 17-year-old Kopi Pot is a reliable option not only for a variety of coffee selections but also home-made desserts (their Coconut Pie and Mango Cream Cheesecake are a must-try). They also have full-course meal, though, offering international and seafood dishes. Their traditional, open air décor certainly adds a nice touch.
Jl. Melasti SEACRETS Perched close to the relatively busy intersection of Melasti, Seacrest (part of Rivavi Fashion Hotel) is a nice spot to unwind after a day at the beach or shopping. With its fun and energetic environment, friendly staff and tasty, casual food (think Rumours), Seacrets is a the sort of dining spot that you can come in for a feed and wind up passing the night away singing along to the live band with a cold beer in your hand. generated at BeQRious.com

FEATURE
BUILDING FOUNDATIONS Damian Saint from Woobar talks about his new project at the club, Foundation.
W
Bali is continuing their on-going support of the burgeoning local electronic music scene through their latest concept, Foundation. Having most recently given the current crop of Indonesian DJs a platform to show how good they really are, through their now regular Heatwave night, they have now extended this concept out to the Asian region with a slight twist, as they handpick the finest and most talented resident DJs across the whole of Asia from some of the continents most recognised clubs and venues.
What’s the concept behind the new Foundation night at Woobar? Well it’s like this: Resident DJ’s are the unsung heroes of club land, they are the ones who are trusted to read and excite the crowd at either end of the night, and ensure the night is a textured experience taking everyone on a musical journey. Often the best of these are critically acclaimed by the headline acts but receive none of the glory, so we felt it was time to give them the chance to showcase themselves and prove that The Foundation is what everything else is built on. There’s such a great pool of talent with the resident DJs across Asia Pacific it seemed a waste to not start booking them rather than super famous DJs.
52
www.thebeatbali.com
How do you go about finding or selecting the resident DJs for the night? Well this is a very new concept for myself and Woobar Bali so there’s no particular method right now. We’re launching with Singapore and Kilo resident Maurice Simon who’s really been on top of his game the last year or so. He’s somebody I’ve wanted to book for quite some time and he was available so we went ahead... generated at BeQRious.com

The original French style patisserie to get your coffee and pastry fix, Café Moka’s new menu offers a range of lighter options for the health conscious.
E
stablished over 20 years ago by a Frenchman who loved the Bali lifestyle but missed the home comforts of proper coffee and buttery croissants, the original Café Moka was (and still is) located on Jalan Raya Seminyak. So popular has the lure of authentic continental coffee and baked goods proven to be, that expats and tourists alike continue to flock to a number of outlets that have sprung up from Uluwatu to Ubud, where a veritable banquet awaits. Located right on the main drag to Seminyak, the Café Moka here is a charming mix of café, patisserie and grocery shop, brimming with

rustic French charm manifested in earthy tones, wicker chairs and terracotta tiles throughout. Surrounding the counter, a series of large glass display cases beckon, chock-full of dreamy cakes and cream slices, as well as croissants, Danish pastries, donuts, Sacristian and pain aux chocolat. Behind that on the counter wall, a smorgasbord of freshly baked breads are proffered, including brown, multigrain, pita and of course, baguette. Over to the other side, and a range of mouthwatering quiches, pies, confits and gratins are just begging to be wrapped up and taken home, or, if you’d prefer, pick up a few of the boutique groceries including muesli, preserves, meats, cheeses
FOOD
and other dairy products to whip up your own homemade meal. Café Moka has always moved with the times, offering new innovations to bring in the new guests, while making sure to keep the old favourites to make those long time customers happy. True to that notion, new on the agenda comes a mix of healthy juices and lighter food options like salads and vegetarian dishes. Keen to check out some of the new menu additions, I stop by for a light lunch while on my usual errands round town. To cool off I dive straight into an Apple Mint juice (45k++) – not just any old juice either – the new Moka healthy beverages are cold pressed using only the freshest fruit & veg with no added sugar or additives for a guilt-free gulp of goodness. For the food, first up I choose the new Avocado & Quinoa Salad (75k++), with baby spinach, cherry tomatoes
and red onion – all doused in a delish light and tangy mustard dressing. For the main I dig into the superb Vegetarian Burger (73k++) – featuring a chickpea and lentil pattie, dressed with tangy Mediterranean style sauce and accompanied by either hand cut French or American style fries. It’s as delicious as it is filling, and proves that there’s more to this joint than just coffee and cake. If you don’t feel like venturing out then take advantage of the free local delivery service available, but it would be a shame to miss the great coffee, free wifi, comfy furnishings, and European ambience that comes with a visit to this Bali classic. Romeos Romeos Mix Grill For Two
TODAY’s SPECIALS
Ossotel Legian’s Romeos, sited on the corner of Jl.Padma Utara, is known for its friendly service, good location, their live music entertainment, and marvellous drinks. But most of all, they were known for their delicious meat based delicacies. So it is not a coincidence, that in this edition we had the opportunity to try one of their flagship menu items that all carnivores would adore: the ‘Romeos Mix Grill For Two’. Included in the mix grill are one rib eye steak and three pieces of lamb shank which are rested five minutes before serving. Then two pieces of barbecued chicken wings and four pieces of cocktail size pork sausage, served with a side-dish of sautéed snow peas and mashed potatoes, and completed with four different sauces; cheddar barbecue sauce, Béarnaise sauce, steak sauce, and red wine sauce. The star of the dish are the pork ribs, succulently cooked a la sous-vide for 16 hours, seasoned with lemon, rosemary, garlic, salt, pepper, and honey. The whole package can be enjoyed by two people for about Rp. 395.000 plus tax & services. For more informations, go to www.romeosbali.com
Bistro C Smokehouse Bloody Mary Bistro C at Canggu Club possibly serves one of the best Bloody Marys on the island. The essentially vodka-soaked tomato juice was given their own flavor-enhancing twist, using chili-infused vodka and barbeque sauce that gives Bistro C’s Smokehouse Bloody Mary (IDR165k) an extra kick in the spicy—and tast!—department. Oh and that lingering smoky flavour? That’ll be the strip of bacon that they’ve used as a garnish. Even better: they served the drink in a ginormous glass— definitely more bang for your buck!

CD REVIEW
7/10
JAMIROQUAI
Funk Soul Brother
Automaton
As someone who remembers first hand the positive impact Jamiroquai had on 90’s music with their first two albums, it has been an ongoing source of disappointment to watch Jay Kay & co slowly but surely slide into middle-ofthe-road tedium. What started out as a noble exercise in fusing contemporary acid jazz with eco-sensibilities on 1993’s Emergency on Planet Earth, eventually became a Ferraridriving, paparazzi thumping bore-fest. That’s why the Ealing ensemble’s eighth LP, Automaton is such a pleasant surprise. Not only is it good, it confidently straddles the old and new sound of Jamiroquai, fusing it together for an album that leaves the last couple of lackluster efforts (Rock Dust Light Star, Dynamite) in its future disco dust. Although Jamiroquai have been around for much longer than fellow mad headgear wearing contemporaries Daft Punk, Automaton aligns closely (some may complain too closely) with the airy disco funk of the French DJ duo – all
breathless basslines, polished hooks and plenty of kitschy retro futurism to help it all along. Kay himself sounds as fresh as ever, his buttery voice holding up nicely amongst the laserbeam synths and sampled strings. Conspicuous by its absence is the existence of a bonafide single. Jamiroquai have always been a ‘singles’ band - with hits like “Virtual Insanity”, “Cosmic Girl” and “Space Cowboy” providing solid backbones to rest the other material on. Here, while the songs are for the most part foot-tapping, shoulder-jiggling disco nuggets (“Shake On”, “Summer Girl” and the title track particularly), nothing really stands out in the same way as their best-known cuts. That said, Automaton remains a slick updating of the classic Jamiroquai sound, and for that it’s absolutely worth taking for a spin on the dance floor. Dan Ashcroft

EXHIBITIONS ON NOW
Send your art exhibition info to art@beatmag.com
Now – April 24 Artotel Sanur
Now – April 29 The Oberoi Bali
Three Indonesian artists talk about love in an art exhibition titled “Love is Blind Huh!”. Held at Artotel Sanur, this exhibition sees BOMBDALOVE, Suku Tangan and Srizkiki interpret love in different ways through their artworks. Love often gets personified with anything sweet like pink, chocolate, teddy bears, balloons and roses. This time, these three artists show other versions of love by charging their dogma with incisive characters and darker colors. | Artotel Sanur, Jl. Kusuma Sari No. 1, Sanur
The Oberoi Bali is back to present another Balinese traditional artist with their latest exhibition titled “The Inner Brightness”. This exhibition displays the works of Ketut Budiana, a guru-artist who is also known as one of the last of his kind in Bali. In his works, it can be seen that the artist does not idealize Bali, nor its tradition; neither does he bear witness to changing Balinese society and values. His works remain in the field of the spiritual, seeing him enhance Balinese spiritual symbolism to a level in which it takes on a universal dimension. | The Oberoi Bali, Jl. Kayu Aya, Seminyak
Now – May 8 Villa Pandan Harum The biannual Bali Artists Camp 2016 is back again to the island, bringing together Indonesian and Australian artists to present their works. Besides showing Bali through the artist’s eyes, the exhibition also aims to strengthen the friendship of two countries. Exhibiting artists are Made Budhiana, Made Sudibia, Fredy Sitorus, Gede Gunada, Suryani, Michael Downs, Mary Lou Pavlovic, Ivor Cole and Rie Mandala. | Villa Pandan Harum, Jl. Anak Agung Gede Rai, Gg. Pandan Harum, Lodtunduh, Ubud
Now – May 13 Cush Cush Gallery Charcoal for Children is a yearly program that uses LagiLagi DIY charcoal to fuel creativity amongst children. ART
Budi Agung Kuswara Budi Agung Kuswara, nicknamed Kabul, left Bali in 1999 to pursue his study in Yogyakarta. Drawing inspiration from the diverse social issues he has experienced during his stay in Yogyakarta and employing the Balinese tradition of storytelling, he composes images which evolve around social reality. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? I was born and raised in Bali, and I have pursued art since my study at the High School of Arts in Batubulan. The high school times were when I looked for my identity. The situation at the time made me move out from Bali and continue my studies in Yogyakarta. Unlike now, being accepted by the Institute of Arts in Yogyakarta wasn’t easy. The selection process was very strict, while the applicants were too many. Thankfully, I was accepted. I started living in Yogyakarta and realized that the art situation was very different compared to Bali, especially in term of understanding art. If we can categorize your art, in what style does it belong to? Is it contemporary art? Contemporary art is the most flexible to categorize. However, as an artist, I try to go out from these style boxes. It’s more about combining and modifying. It’s not only based on specific understanding, but more about the present influence that can contribute on how an idea is executed. How would you get ideas for your art? In Yogyakarta, I found another art function that is beyond what I saw in Bali. In Bali, for me, it’s more about the tradition itself; it’s either a part of ritual or tourism. In Yogyakarta, art is closely related to the movements in society, including political issues and activism. From there, what I see now is that art’s function is actually more than tourism or attractions.
It’s been said that whatever you get in Yogyakarta is still strong, and you still carry it with you even after you return to Bali. Yes, because it can be said that art with this particular character is always close to the social reality. Meanwhile, the art tendency in Bali is like trying to freeze itself from the social reality. It doesn’t have so much development, and is so well-preserved. However, if we look back, the tradition didn’t exist instantly. It has influences from the kingdom era, and it has been going through a long process. The art beyond that is something that can move along social reality steadily, and it’s more relevant. How about the elements of parody in your art? That’s one way to communicate, conveying something through parody. Visual language is normally multi-interpretational. As an artist we can’t always expect that our audiences will understand the meaning of our works like the way we do. Additionally, it’s also how the works can communicate something in a form that is not too serious, while containing a seriousness in it. www.thebeatbali.com

SPA
THE SPA This simple spa really knows how to pamper you well.
The ONE Legian, Jl. Legian No. 117, Badung T. 3001 101
LOOK Tucked down a nook at The ONE Legian, The Spa is indeed designed for savvy travellers looking for some serious pampering. This spa makes smart use of its space, housing five treatment rooms that include three couple rooms and two single rooms. These treatment rooms are very well-organized, illuminated with soft glow of light that brings a calming ambience. FEEL We endulged in the “Chocolate Delight” (350k) which lasted 150 minutes. As the name implies, this treatment boasts a chocolate sensation through the uses of its chocolatey scrub, mask and lotion, with a very sweet aroma that helps lift the mood. The treatment began with a soothing massage. As requested, the massage came with a very firm yet gentle pressures which had us totally relaxed. Combining acupressure, kneading and stroking, this massage was a therapeutic one, and it really helped release the tension out of our body. After the massage, the treatment continued with the chocolate scrub, which was followed by the chocolate body mask which gave our skin its glow. While waiting for the body mask to absorb, we received a refining facial, using seaweed-based products which are believed to help prolong our skin’s elasticity. After 150-minutes, our treatment ended with a
nice shower, as well as a calming flower bath which was accompanied by chocolate cookies for us to enjoy. For the last touch, chocolate hand and body lotion was given to us, which perfectly brought our sweet journey to a close. INGREDIENTS here are three kinds of massage oil being T offered for this treatment. The selection includes The Spa Oil which is made from peppermint, the citrusy Inspiration Oil from bergamot, ylang-ylang and lavender, and the romantic-scented Jasmine Oil. For the rest of the treatment, The Spa uses chocolate-based products that reflect the treatment itself. MAGIC There is so much charm hidden behind its simplicity. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed warmly by their staff who are there to assist you throughout your pampering journey. Next, you will be given a consultation sheet as a way to let them know the conditions of your body, how you want to be treated and what products you prefer to use. Glasses of lemongrass tea will also be served before and after your treatment, helping you soothe your mind. Add these with the attentive services by their certified therapists, what you will have a truly exceptional spa experience.
