Petitenget’s Taco Local is now a part of the newly established ‘The Steps’. Adding two face to face steps-like seating areas akin to an Italian ‘piazza’, and serving drinks and finger foods, The Steps is designed to be a laid-back gathering place for people to hang out and relax. Other than Taco Local’s delicious menu which is still served at the venue, additional dishes now include tasty Japanese style skewered chicken barbeque, or “Yakitori’. I

t’s been over 20 years since American Brian Aldinger traded New Jersey for Ubud to open up a modest little street side warung with his Balinese wife Nuri. Naughty Nuri’s sold the best pork ribs and most ridiculous martinis in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD, but there was only one problem, what if you didn’t live in Ubud? Would you drive all the way there just to get your rib fix on? Happily, the gods saw fit to answer everyone’s prayers and Naughty Nuri’s Warung Seminyak has now flung open its doors, serving the same winning combo of wicked ribs and brutal martinis, not to mention a whole host of other goodies. If you’ve happened by the Nuri’s

62

www.thebeatbali.com

Ubud domain before you’ll know the drill. If not, it’s all about fun informal dining around large wooden tables with a ramshackle-chic ambience and the mouthwatering barbeque smell wafting around like smoky ambrosia. Interested to see how the new venue stacks up against the Ubud original, I stop by to get stuck into one of my favourite food combos. First up, just to whet the whistle, a fellow Nuri’s aficionado and I order up a couple of frosty Bintangs (35k+) – ice cold and beyond refreshing, with a bowl of the Pork Poppers (50k+) to nibble on. Described as ‘sexy, crunchy and juicy’, the succulent minced pork balls are the ultimate beer snack.

FOOD

It’s a stellar start, but soon enough we’re salivating for the main event, which comes in the form of a couple of racks of the infamous signature pork ribs (135k+), and a couple of gin martinis (125k+). Slathered in the secret, sticky, smoky finger-lickin’ sauce, the tender ribs just fall off the bone – easily one of the most unmissable dining experiences on this island. To complete the picture, we share out a bowl of the Mixed Fries (45k+) - a trio of crinkled, wedge and straight-cut potato chips. Meanwhile, the martinis are doing an excellent job of lubricating our lunch – not for the faint-hearted, get through three of these bad boys and you’ll get your name up

on the Nuri’s wall of fame. No easy feat I can assure you. With another round on the cards (this time with a lychee twist), we soldier on bravely into dessert territory, and have a go at the Umpa Lumpa Shake (75k+) – essentially a chocolate shake of extreme proportions, piled high with cookie bits, pretzels and whipped cream. Open from 11am-10pm every day, Nuri’s Seminyak is just what the doctor ordered when you need to get your rib & martini fix (and there is a whole lot more on the menu), minus the trip up to Ubud. Kopi Pot Honey Grilled Chicken

TODAY’s SPECIALS

Being one of Legian’s oldest restaurants, Kopi Pot’s atmosphere is the exact opposite of the hustle & bustle of their neighbourhood; a simple traditional interior & architecture encased within a lush garden, and on bright sunny days, sunlight peeking through the tree branches. Such idyllic scenery becomes the backdrop for their local and international menu that has kept them on the radar after all these years of competitive business. One of their delicacies that we review today is their succulent Ayam Panggang Madu (Honey Grilled Chicken). Spicy and sweet, this entree is the perfect dish for an exotic tropical lunch. Consisting of half a chicken (the wing & thigh) it is basted with spicy honey sauce for 30-40 minutes, grilled for several minutes, then served with ‘nasi kuning’ (turmeric rice), Balinese ‘urab’ (braised long beans with spicy coconut cream sauce), and three kinds of sambal - sweet chili sauce, sambal matah and chili soy sauce. This delicious dish costs Rp. 69.000 ++. For more information on Kopi Pot, visit their website at www. kopipot.com

A-Club Spiced Mojito If you find yourself dancing the night away in Denpasar’s hottest club, A-Club on the fourth floor of Akasaka Bali, take a sip or two of their Spiced Mojito (IDR90k) - a smooth concoction of Captain Morgan’s Original Spiced Gold dark rum, lime, brown sugar, and mint leaves. The taste is still what you expect from a mojito—minty, refreshingly sour and a bit sweet—but thanks to its Caribbeaninspired base spirit there’s a nice vanilla/ cinnamon-ish flavor in the mix as well.

CD REVIEW

KENDRICK LAMAR DAMN.

“And we hate the po-po/when they kill us dead in the streets fo sho”, runs the line from Kendrick Lamar’s 2014 sophomore album To Pimp A Butterfly. At the end of the opening track on its follow up DAMN., it can be heard again – this time sampled as a sound bite from a Fox News presenter criticising Lamar’s performance of the adopted #blacklivesmatter anthem “Alright” on the BET awards. “Ugh puhleeeze…” scoffs his female co-presenter in reply; “I don’t like it”. It’s the same laughable hackneyed argument that white middle class America has been peddling ever since lil’ Kendrick was on his uncle’s knee in 1980’s Compton: That for want of a better term - ‘gangsta rap’ is one of the main culprits for inciting (and perpetuating) violence amongst young black males. It sets the tone well on an album that deals with notions of America on the brink of apocalypse, racial barriers, and the new white White House. Whether he likes it or not, Lamar has

8/10 King Kendrick.

found himself the voice of a new generation of disenfranchised youth who would very much like to see an end to things like white privilege and police brutality – things that continue to rear their ugly heads on a regular basis. In tackling those kinds of topics, it’s fair to say that lyrically not much has changed since the last album. Where DAMN. does differ though, is the departure from the blue-note jazz and retro disco vibes of To Pimp A Butterfly to something much more straightforward musically. Simple beats and uncomplicated mellow melodies provide the canvas, and apart from getting riled up on ‘DNA.’ and the heated lead single ‘HUMBLE.’, the album generally finds Lamar rapping along to a more relaxed tempo. All told, DAMN. is another solid offering from the Compton MC, and proves he’s still lightyears ahead of the competition. Dan Ashcroft

ART

Nyoman Sani In the world of arts, she is one of the not-so-many women who has reached widespread acclaim. She is all about woman, unceasingly empowering other women through her art. Through her MotherArt Space, she seeks gifted young women, enlightening them to keep growing in the world of arts. What is your art all about? My art covers women. I’m interested in their lifestyle, their characteristics, and how they solve the problems in their daily routine sand careers. Other aspects like their gestures and fashion also make exciting ideas to be laid on canvas. How did you first meet the idea of creating these female figures? The idea sparked when I was doing my final project. The students were asked to make 12 original works. I was a bit confused about what I should make, but at the same time, I was reading a book about an urban life titled Midnight in Jakarta. That’s how the idea came about. I started painting women and their lifestyles which were not too much explored in Bali at that moment. This project was back in 2000. What is the characteristic of your art? The head cutting. What I want to convey here is that people are not perfect, including women. We are lacking on many things, and how I portray it is through the depiction of their heads. There will always be the face and the hair, but if you look through it, you can sometimes spot that either their nose

or ears are missing. With this vagueness, I believe my objects still look good and pretty when they are actually imperfect. As a female artist, what challenges do you face most? The challenge is to face the other artists, who are mostly men. So, as women artists, we have to keep our existence by continuously creating art. And when creating art, we can’t play around. When there is an idea coming out, we have to put it into realization immediately. We can’t hold it for a long time, as the process has to keep going. Nyoman Sani exhibits in Art Patio until May 20 www.thebeatbali.com

It’s close to some of the must-visit spots and beaches while you’re staying in Bali (plus: it’s a mere 20-minutes straight-line ride to the airport!), but you’ll be excused if you prefer to stay in the resort with all the many wonderful facilities and activities available. LOOK “Wow—this place is big,” remarked one impressed first-time visitor as he entered the Trans Resort Bali. And it is. The five-star resort is big but fortunately not the kind that’s overwhelming. It’s brimming with rich Balinese architectural heritage combined with a contemporary flair, such as the gorgeous Italian marble with Balinese patterns that you’ll find as you first enter the hotel. Admire the finest art depicting local culture created by one of Bali’s best artists, Nyoman Gunarsa, that are exhibited in the spacious lobby. ATMOSPHERE Flanked by two resort buildings, the Trans Resort Bali’s pool (which includes a beautiful sandy beach) stretches down to a sublime waterfall that streams from a botanical wall. This spot exemplifies the atmosphere the Trans Resort Bali has successfully fashioned a serene, oasis-like repose from the noise of

modern life. Plus, it exudes such a strong and unique cultural presence, feeling authentically Balinese, that you will always know you’re on the Island of the Gods. FEATURES The Trans Resort Bali houses 184 guest rooms and suites that offer spacious balconies with daybeds and private hot tubs overlooking the lovely view of the sandy beach pool. And we haven’t even mentioned the 16 palatial villas (or nicknamed “Balinese Kampung”) that have their own private pools surrounded by lush Balinese garden. All accommodation features mood lighting control, exclusively designed bedding with 100% goose down and customized Egyptian-cotton linen, Acqua di Parma amenities, temperature and humidity control, oversized bathrooms, and much more. For foodies, once you have had your sun fix from the sandy pool, head to The Restaurant for authentic Indonesian, Chinese, and Western cuisines; The Lounge Bar for some delicious cocktails; or up to The 18th Rooftop Bar for a sunset-backdropped experience overlooking Seminyak. There’s also The Kids Club (Arts & Crafts, Lego Station, Tree House, Air Hockey) for the young’uns; The Fitness Center; ARSA boutique which offers exquisite Indonesian crafts; and, for a little ‘me time’, The Spa where you can indulge in a luxurious caviar and pearl facial treatment. Their Grand Ballroom often plays host to several highprofile events, with the most recent being Eddie Izzard’s comedy tour last March.

ZO HAIR & NAIL STUDIO A hair and nail studio you must consider when you’re in Denpasar.

LOOK Located in Level 21 Mall, Zo Hair & Nail Studio is one-stop destination for your beauty needs. This beauty studio has an edgy industrial look featuring concrete walls and exposed bricks, as well as minimalist shelving made from wood and metal – which all represents the young and chic mood they are offering. At the rear area of the studio, there is also a room offering space to get your tattoo or piercing done. FEEL We were offered their Linkage Treatment (250k), and it was a super quick treatment for an undeniably nice result. Using exclusive products, it is a three-step treatment which helps regenerate the quality of your hair, as well as improving its condition instantly. Not only is it treating your hair, each step is also punctuated with pleasant aroma to keep you feeling refreshed throughout the treatment. Our treatment itself began with determining the products which fitted our hair type. After the shampoo, our hair stylist applied Step 1, which was the Amino Oil, designed to smooth out the bumps on the surface of our hair. Step 2 was completed right after, with the application of Moisture Veil which bonds the first formula and retains the hair’s moisture. This was then followed by Step 3 which was the Smoothing Collagen. As we waited for this final coat to absorb, we also received a soothing massage which was very relaxing. After about 30 minutes, the treatment ended with another shampoo, and our hair’s improvement was really visible as it dried. We felt that our hair was more protected and conditioned, showing a shine and texture which we really loved. Finally, this treatment also came with four ampoules (purchased separately) to be used at home, once a week for four weeks. INGREDIENTS This treatment uses Linkage Meu products which are provided exclusively by one of

Japan’s best professional hair care brands, Milbon. Created by combining scientific rigor and artistic exploration, Milbon’s products have been through a research and development process which is inspired by the creative approaches of master stylists. MAGIC his hair and nail studio is perfect for you T if you want to experiment and experience something new in your look. There are various hair treatments offered in their menu, including the fashion hair coloring that is oh so popular nowadays. Meanwhile, for your nails, they have options like nail art, manicure and pedicure, as well as acrylic extensions. It all comes with reasonable prices, so don’t worry about that. Last but not least, they can also do tattoos and piercings for you, making them a one-stop solution for those who want to look edgy in a truly artistic style.

Whether you’re familiar with the movie Beetlejuice or not, this journal would definitely look good on your desk. Usually it takes your passing away to get a copy of this book, but we managed to snag a few without having to go to such extremes. Since we didn’t have to, you know, die, our copies ended up being blank - we didn’t exactly need that kind of guidance. We don’t doubt you’ll be able to fill it in nicely though. Just make sure no one else finds it. We’ve seen the end of this movie; it didn’t go well when normal people ended up reading through it. This journal is a replica of the handbook found in the Maitlands’ household after they pass away. It comes with hundreds of blank pages to fill with your own exciting stories. Endpapers feature blue and white stripes with skull, cockroach, and arrow pattern. Available exclusively for USD $14.99 at www.thinkgeek.com.
