SPREADING ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS THROUGH ART AT FESTIVAL TEPI SAWAH If you lead a green lifestyle, then you won’t want to miss Festival Tepi Sawah 2017 held at Omah Apik, Ubud, on July 3 -4. In line with its name, the location of the festival will overlook the verdant view of rice paddy fields—a perfect spot for the art workshops and environmental discussions they have lined up for the event. The focus of the show will be to further spread the importance of an environmentallyfriendly lifestyle that adopts the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle, and for that they have partnered with the publishers of Clean Bali Series, a children-oriented environmental book program. Musicians and artists slated for the festival include Tompi, Dewa Alit, Jasmine Okubo, Nita Aartsen, and Fascinating Rhythm Community.

LET THERE BE LIGHT AT NUSA DUA LIGHT FESTIVAL Responsible for the gloriously colorful light shows across Indonesia, Taman Pelangi Indonesia will next shine a light at Nusa Dua. They will once again collaborate with the local government in charge of tourism, this time the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), to present the Nusa Dua Light Festival that will be held on June 17 – July 30 at the Peninsula Island at Nusa Dua. It’ll be a sea of lights as the family-friendly event will feature various shapes of colorful lanterns accompanied with musical performances and a food bazaar.

SCOOP PARADING BALI’S UNIQUE TRADITIONS AT THE 39TH BALI ART FESTIVAL Bali offers an abundance of art and cultural heritages that are still preserved until today, and the 39th Bali Art Festival (Pesta Kesenian Bali) will provide a month-long platform for them to shine on. Held from June 10 to July 8 at Taman Budaya Bali in Denpasar, this year’s Bali Art Festival will feature unique traditions from almost every region in Bali such as the Ngusaba or perang pandan tradition from Karangasem district. In fact, there’s a special team that visits each district prior to the event to ensure the authenticity of their customs. Don’t miss the parade on opening day which will surely be quite a spectacle.

SING FOR SONGAN WITH BALI CHILDREN FOUNDATION Back on February 9th, nonstop torrential rain caused major landslides in the Kintamani region. The worst affected region was the village of Songan. Bali Children Foundation will hold a fundraiser luncheon in which the proceeds will be used specifically to improve education opportunity (including scholarships) for the children of Songan, as well as to repair and renovate an English classroom with electricity, lights, and fans. The fundraiser will be held on June 9 at Cocoon Beach Club, and if you’re interested to join, a 3-course luncheon only costs IDR400k and the aim is to raise IDR75million through luncheon ticket percentages, raffles, auctions, and donations. Visit www.balichildrenfoundation.org for more.

HIGHLIGHT A MORE DOWN TO EARTH LIFESTYLE WITH THE 3RD BALI VEGAN FESTIVAL Oh you’ll definitely eat your veggies at this event. The Bali Vegan Festival will take place for the third time at Paradiso Ubud on October 6 – 8, still carrying the mission to inspire people to choose a healthier and cruelty-free lifestyle. The Festival will once again be filled with workshops, talk-shows, yoga classes, raw food cooking classes, documentary screenings, and even fashion shows. Entry is free but some discussions, workshops, and other classes might be priced individually. Be sure to mark this on your calendar, all of you vegan-curious! Weekenders

Solee aka Stuttgart's Norman Flaskamp will be playing at Jenja's on the 20th of May. Starting out his venture into the world of electronic dance music back in the 90s as a vinyl distributor and small time disc jockey, Norman has come leaps and bounds since then. After discovering production and laying low for a few years, 2006 saw the reappearance of Solee. An orchestrated range of beauty many hadn't heard in the world of techno, he shook the world beneath him and soon enough his tracks were appearing on the mixes of James Zabiela, Nick Warren, Sasha, John Digweed, basically all the pro's. A trade magazine put it like this: 'He is the DJ that puts 'music' into dance music'. If you listen to his productions on record labels like Get Physical, Global Underground, Defected, Bedrock and his own Parquet Recordings you will find a delicious mix of melodic techno, and lush grooving tech house. As good as his productions may be, his mixing is en par - get down to Seminyak's favourite techno bunker and find out for yourself! Genre: melodic techno, tech house

BALI SOUL 2017 Bali Soul 2017 is on the way to the island to entertain guests from around the world. Everyone in town who fits the festival demographic may be interested in this, as the USA organisers who have been doing it for years offer something fun and new for the island. Read on to find out more from one of the organisers of Bali Soul 2017, Evan Johnson.

Bali Soul 2017 is billed as a “luxurious vacation getaway featuring hip-hop, RnB parties” - can you tell us more about that particular concept, who is it for and how did Bali get in the mix? Between the year 2000 and 2015, a leisure event was created for the mature, upscale demographic primarily based in the United States. A nominal number of guests traveled from Europe. This getaway included luxury accommodation at various resorts in the Caribbean. Entertainment included comedy shows, parties with live cover bands and top DJs catering to our clientele of sophisticated adults. The age of our group is primarily between 35 and 50. Most attractive is the synergy amongst new and returning guests. Our best year included approximately 200 guests. As one guest noted, “thanks for never losing sight of what makes it special”. In simple terms, it’s great people, new and old friends, fun parties, and a good-old

48

www.thebeatbali.com

fashioned spectacular vacation getaway. Traveling with us from the US and Europe are 20 guests this year for Bali. Progressing with a trip on Bali’s side of the globe will obviously take a year or so for our guests to warm up to. After so many years in a great but convenient location, the Caribbean, I decided to push the envelope for a new destination. Options included UAE/Dubai, Thailand/Phuket and Indonesia/Bali. I visited each location before making a decision. While Dubai and Phuket are terrific destinations as well, Bali won for a variety of reasons. This included the ‘wow factor’ of a country so far away from the US, availability of luxury properties, great tourism infrastructure, and the proximity to other exciting destinations (The Gilis, Singapore, Australia, etc.). Myself and the DJs will actually be staying until June 5th and are currently deciding where to go once

FEATURE guests to explore Bali on their own or simply chill. Our official hashtag is #BaliSoul2017 and an impromptu gathering or party is always possible.

the official event dates conclude. I’ll be looking for a few venues for them to spin as well on these extended dates. Also, Bali has a market for hip-hop and RnB music within its party structure. Who is behind the event? And what’s the inspiration? I’m the lead event planner in a group of six friends and associates. We began this effort 16 years ago to give our demographic a vacation experience that is truly remarkable and far from ordinary. While we are completely aware that our guests can easily book their own getaways, the complete package of ingredients noted above are the main attraction. What sort of experience do you intend to give people from the week-long event? Can you give us a sort of (brief) sneak peek of each event/activities from Day 1? The Bali Soul experience will offer those staying at Double Six Hotel a luxury hotel experience, networking with new and old friends, and excellent parties at unique venues with top DJs in the genre (Hip-Hop, RnB). On arrival guests will simply luxuriate at the hotel. Friday or Saturday (day) the group plans to visit Bali Safari Park together. Other than our events, remaining time is for

Can you tell us why you’ve chosen certain places for the festival such as La Favela and Mano Seaside? And can you give us an update of the other spots the festival will be held? We sent a proposal to at least 15 venues in Bali. So far La Favela, Mano Seaside and Chiringuito replied in the affirmative. One common theme is that we enjoy unique venues so guests have a variety of experiences. As noted above, we are targeting those who enjoy hip-hop, RnB primarily and/or those who want to ‘kick-it’ with our group. We are still open to a Friday event if you know of a venue who may be interested. Other than an impromptu gathering, ideally we only want to have 3 or 4 official events and allow the remaining time for guests to chill. Can you tell us what DJ Danny Dee and DJ Ice will bring to the table? DJ Ice and Danny Dee are top of their applicable genres, and understandably unknown in the specific Bali market. Part of my job is to change that. The most notable asset they possess is superb blending and mixing, a common New York City party feature. While successfully energizing audiences worldwide. DJs Ice and Danny Dee are masters at their craft and have been with us since we started. More info on the DJs is at www.balisoul2017.com/djs.html How can punters join the festival? How do they make reservations and what are the prices (is there an early bird price)? Great question! This initial year in Bali our goal is primarily exposure of our concept. With that said, there is no cover charge at the events. Tourists and locals in our demographic (mature, upscale, sophisticated clientele) are all encouraged to attend. So there you have it, something new and different coming soon to our shores May 25 to 31, 2017. Check out their website for more details. www.balisoul2017.com www.thebeatbali.com

TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION IN BALI FASHION TREND 2018 The Beat’s Sahiri Loing speaks with Dwi Iskandar from Bali Fashion Trend about this weekend’s fashion event at TS Suites. Sunny Bali is indeed the perfect locale for a spring/summer-themed fashion event such as the this weekend’s Bali Fashion Trend 2018. Hosted by the Indonesian Fashion Council, the runway of Bali Fashion Trend 2018 will display the finest work from 40 designers; a combination of established designers such as Oka DiPutra, Deden Siswanto, Ali Charisma, Lenny Agustin and Putu Aliki, as well as upand-coming talents such as Andreas Lim and Fenny Salim and Weda Githa. “Many of the designers’ collections will incorporate traditional materials and motifs, such as tenun, songket, and batik, and present them in a contemporary style,” Dwi Iskandar, the event’s Head Organizer told The Beat. “We also want to support the government’s program to make those traditional elements more modern, which is why we have invited local businesses to participate, and we’ve also collaborated with the district of Jembrana to design workplace outfits with their local tenun designs.” The Bali Fashion Trend 2018 will feature plenty of modern-meets-traditional styles

50

that will offer bright colours, simple cuts, and, of course, wearables. And the fashion event also aims to foster and nurture aspiring designers, as exemplified by their Young Designer Incubator program, which was started earlier this year, where participants can learn and engage in a variety of fashion-related subjects. All 12 of the program’s participants will be part of the 100 brands appearing in BFT’s pop-up shop called the Tstore. Not just a flashy display of the latest fashion trends, Bali Fashion Trend 2018 shoots for the bigger picture. “We want to build a stronger foundation to promote local fashion onto the international stage,” Iskandar said. “And not just for Balinese, but also for anyone who has a fashion-related business in Bali, including foreigners. We wish to invite them to work together to support the local fashion industry.” Fashion aficionados, be sure not to miss Bali Fashion Trend 2018 held at TS Suites Bali on May 19 – 21.

he runaway success of Finns Beach Club down at Brawa Beach has prompted a sea change at its sister property The Canggu Club. Set to become Finns Recreation Club, the iconic venue will be the ultimate family-friendly destination, with endless sports and activities on offer for all comers. The sprawling venue tucked just past Batu Belig continues to reinvent itself, boasting a stellar lineup of things to do including Bounce trampoline club, Splash water park and Strike bowling alley on top of all the other extensive sporting facilities under their roof like footy pitches, squash and tennis courts and a gym. All that exercise calls for some sustenance though, and luckily the newly revamped Bistro C Smokehouse, which sits at the heart of complex has got you well and truly

covered - providing a bright and breezy spot for daily breakfast lunch and dinner. The Bistro itself is dominated by a large bar, which overlooks the perfectly manicured front lawn and is decked out in classy white and wicker to give that classic colonial ambiance. A sea of al-fresco tables surround the central bar area, while off to the side is the airconditioned saloon area with a view of the open-sided kitchen if the heat of the day gets all a bit too much. Ready to road test some of Bistro C’s new menu, a friend and I take up a spot by the bar, and settle right into a couple of cocktails. A double Margarita (165k++) and a Smokehouse Bloody Mary (165k++) more than do the trick as they are both absolutely enormous and provide the ultimate warm up for what’s to come.

Our main event is the colossal Chef’s Tasting Platter (995k++) – a smorgasbord of homemade, house-smoked beef brisket, sausages, spare ribs, pulled pork and a whole chicken, served along with a choice of three sides. We go for the grilled Corn on the Cob, Cowboy Baked Beans, and the show-stopping Mac’n’Cheese with truffle, Parmesan and chorizo. It’s hard to know where to start, and we are simply overwhelmed with the amount of food before us. According to the menu, the platter is for four people, but we decide it could easily feed up to six. After that, any talk of dessert is absolutely out of the question, but the cheesecake selection – 70k++ (oreo/pecan caramel/mango/ strawberry) still catches our eye, as does the Churros-Oh Fudge (70k++), and we vow to leave some space for those on our next visit. Gardin Salmon Coulibiac

TODAY’s SPECIALS

Gardin, located in front of Mirror Club, has been around for quite some time. Surrounded by shrubs and greeneries, Gardin’s architecture is a rendition of a Victorian garden house in a somewhat more contemporary way. This aesthetic juxtaposition of old-fashion and contemporary reflects Gardin’s cooking ethos, as seen on one of their best selling dish that has stayed on their menu since the first opening day; the Salmon Coulibiac. At IDR 142++, the dish consists of rissoto, creamed spinach, mushroom duxelle, hollandaise espuma, and mapple crisps. Certain molecular gastronomy techniques were employed by the chef in the process, which resulted in a dish that retains the basic characteristic of the original recipe, with a finese achievable through modern techniques. For instance, regular Salmon Coulibiac can get a bit stuffy, due to the combination of risotto and the pastry that envelopes the salmon, but the chef skillfuly combines salty, sweet, savoury, and sour, into one delicious dish that’s fulfilling without being over the top. Starfish Bloo Detox-Retox Who says your cocktail can’t be healthy as well? To give this trend a try, just head down to the Ice Bar at Starfish Bloo at the W Bali Seminyak and order the Detox-Retox (IDR160k++), a refreshing blend of homemade citrus vodka, grapefruit juice, lemon juice, and the aromatic roiboos tea that has a high antioxidant content. The drink—tart with a hint of sweetness—is part of their new Sunset on Ice menu, an icy collection of fresh, fancy, and most importantly, healthy cocktails. Try also their wonderful Beetroot Mojito, and have a guilt-free happy hour!

CD REVIEW

3/10

GORILLAZ Humanz

Perhaps the scariest thing about Damon Albarn’s nightmarish cartoon side project, is that it’s been almost two decades since the sinister bounce of “Clint Eastwood” introduced to the world to his motley band of twodimensional misfits. Along with graphic artist Jamie Hewlett of Tank Girl fame, the Blur front man had created a wonderful, satirical monster that could go places his regular band mates couldn’t. What looked like a train wreck on paper (De La Soul + Super Furry Animals?!) turned out more often than not to be a musical triumph (Sean Ryder’s disembodied vocals on “DARE” were particularly inspired). The highest point was 2005’s Demon Days – an album of doomsday prog hip-hop that got mentioned in the same breath as Dark Side of the Moon and Pet Sounds. It even had Dennis Hopper on it. 2010 follow-up Plastic Beach still had its moments, but with Humanz, the spell seems to have finally been broken, and despite its best efforts the album is about as interesting as a bucket of soil. It all looks promising: we’ve

zzzzzzzz.

got a stellar cast of supporting characters, and the confidence of a musician (Albarn) who has a knack of turning whatever he touches into gold. However, this time around it just doesn’t add up, veering from the forgettable (“Saturnz Barz”, “Momentz”) to the occasionally unlistenable (“Halfway to the Halfway House” and the truly awful “Hallelujah Money”). Grace Jones makes a welcome appearance, chuckling like Papa Shango on the grinding “Charger”, while “Andromeda” bubbles along nicely, but still, something feels like it’s missing. Part of the trouble is the bloated track listing; even on the standard release there are twenty songs. On the deluxe edition there’s a completely ridiculous six more - most of which are underwhelming experimental fodder that should have been left on the cutting room floor. The main issue though, is that most of Humanz was conceptualized on Albarn’s iPad – a move which has arguably resulted in a hollow sounding album that puts style over soul. Dan Ashcroft

XUF He is a figure with a creative mind. Some might know him as Electrofux, a DJ who used to play some heavy drops live with a sampler. But he now has changed his way, being a full-time street artist who goes by the name XUF. What’s with the name XUF? It came from my stage name when I was a DJ. When I started to feel bored with playing music, I then used the last three letters only. After I discovered art, I didn’t want to use that name anymore, but my new name still had to have the essence of it. So, I reversed it, and XUF was born What’s the trigger behind your transition from DJ to artist? The boredom in the entertainment world. To play idealist music was hard, while to play commercial would only make me sick. I had the urge to create something, but I didn’t know what it was. I wanted to paint, but I couldn’t paint. It was horrible. But then, I learned Photoshop. It was in 1999. Thirteen years later, I learned what I could do with Photoshop; create art. So, I learned it deeper by myself. During the experiments with Photoshop, I could see the results instantly. When I felt bored with creating music, I would switch to Photoshop. However, it had never come to my mind how to move these works from computer to canvas, until I finally met my friend Quint. He explained what I should do, and I applied it right away. The first time, I did my work on a wall in Kerobokan. It was a different feeling when I saw it on the street, and the next morning, I could see people enjoy it. Eight months later, I got a job offer, and life turned out differently.

So, you don’t have formal education? Nope. For me, if we want to learn, we don’t need to go to school. The most important thing is the idea. Besides walls, do you also work on canvas? Anything that sticks with the paint. It could be on plastic, but that would be chipped easily. It could be on wood, but it would be faded over time. It also depends on the paint itself. So, you’re still exploring mediums too? Yes, because different mediums have different textures. When we do it on uneven concrete walls, the results are statue-like due to its bubbling texture. How about your color options? I’m more into gold and matte black. Colors too. And when using colors, it would be comic-like. Where do the ideas come from? Well, I’m not sure. Sometimes it just comes from a thought. Like, what if this face is combined with this body, would they be matching? When one particular expression is combined with one particular posture, it can be one different image. The ideas come right before I create. I don’t need to wait; it flows.

SPA

THE VIE SPA A soothing spot for a day of pampering The Vie Spa Jl. Nakula 168X, Legian T. 8475689

Look Wonderfully simple and traditional from the moment you enter the waiting room. Then saunter over to the intimate couple’s massage room that is complemented with a large frangipani-strewn bathtub, which is great for a nice post-massage soak. The spa has two floors - the first one is catered for foot massages, while the second floor is reserved for the massage rooms. Feel The Vie Spa’s wooden furniture with Balinese carvings, green-colored walls, and warm lighting radiates a homey—and authentically Balinese—atmosphere that will instantly relax you as you get ready for their popular Balinese Massage (IDR375k++). The one-hour treatment starts with a “foot detox” massage that uses sea salts and a brush to strip away those dead skin cells. Then it’s off to the massage room where the massage will begin with lengthy and gentle strokes and kneads across vital points in our body, starting from the feet and legs then upwards to the back, shoulder, and

neck, magically unknotting those areas. Face forward, the therapist will focus on your belly, chest, as well as the back of head, that includes rejuvenating hair pulling. Ingredients The great thing about Balinese Massage is its use of exotically-scented massage oils that soothe and nourish the skin. The Vie Spa applies three coconut oil-based aromatherapy oils: frangipani, lavender, and lotus flower which are all known for their anxiety-relieving properties. Magic A mixture of well-calibrated strokes and stretches, harmonized with the art of reflexology, acupressure, and aromatherapy, the Balinese Massage is certainly one of the must-try treaments while you’re in Bali. The combined effect produces a relaxed body and mind, freeing them from whatever stress you happen to be experiencing. It is simply the easiest way to escape from life’s often hectic schedule.

This is the sun cap that incorporates a NASA-developed radiant barrier technology that blocks damaging UV rays and repels the sun’s heat. Harnessing the same technology used in space suits to shield astronauts from temperature extremes and dangerous radiation, the radiant barrier reflects up to 80% of the sun’s heat from the body. The barrier imparts a UPF 50+ rating to the cap, providing 99.89% protection from harmful UV rays and ensuring optimal sun safety. Covered by a wide mesh that protects it from damage, this barrier works in concert with the cap’s durable, breathable, and lightweight nylon construction. There’s a wide bill, two ventilation patches on each side of the crown, a long back flap to protect the entire neck, and a moisture-wicking band to keep one’s head shaded and cool.
