There seemed to be something warm and cuddly about having her in the background over the past 12 years. It was a strong connection with the Australian suburbs and her yobo buddies, one that suited the Bali kinda life of the day. Kuta’s now changed, she’s gone, everything is becoming more disparate and now we’re looking at North Asia. I gotta say 2017 has been a funny old year so far.

HONOURING ONE OF THE WORLD’S HERITAGE SITES AT JATILUWIH AGRICULTURE FESTIVAL Bali is not all about the beaches—head west and you’ll discover scenic sights of endless rice paddy terraces called subak, which is already labeled as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. To celebrate the agricultural history of the land, Jatiluwih will hold the first Jatiluwih Agriculture Festival on June 16. The aim is to highlight the rich culture and tradition of the agricultural village of Jatiluwih and other villages in the Tabanan area and will feature traditional dances, culinary bazaar, carnival, and various rituals such as Ngusaba Subak that serves as an offering for nature’s bounties.
RESPECTING THE OCEAN’S ENERGY AT TANAH LOT ART AND FOOD FESTIVAL Still in the Tabanan district, another festival is premiering for the first time but this time will put the spotlight on sea tourism. Tanah Lot Art & Food Festival will be held on July 7 – 9 bearing the theme “Luhuring Segara Rasa Lan Raksa” (which roughly means the ocean as a source of energy to form a cultured character). The festival was designed to further create Tanah Lot as a World Class Tourism Destination and will feature art and dance performances participated by 23 villages as well as a local food bazaar.

Y.V.E. 48 B
rothers Leo and Rafael are Y.V.E 48 – a German deep house combo that has been sending shockwaves around the world. The duo have a solid musical background with Rafael who has been experimenting with electronic sounds since his early teens and Leo who is a classical pianist who graduated from the Juilliard School in New York City. The combination of their knowledge and passion have created hit tracks like ‘On the Road’, ‘Records’ and ‘Nothing To Say’ that have received over 20 million hits on Spotify and been released on dance labels such as Armada Music. Their scheduled show at Mirror on the 16th of June is going to be one of a kind, so we decided to catch up with them to see what they’re all about!
Hey guys! How’s it going? Let’s start with how Y.V.E. 48 began? Hey - it’s going great! We are excited to come to Bali to play in Indonesia for the first time. We started making electronic music together about four years ago. At that point, I (Rafa) had already been producing and DJing for a while, while Leo was studying piano. One day we just decided to make a track together and it was great fun, so we teamed up and started playing some DJ gigs. In 2014 we wanted a fresh start, so we started the Y.V.E. 48 project. What is your creative process when starting a new track? What kind of hardware do you guys use? We normally start by finding a chord progression on the piano and try to figure out what tempo feels best by adding some drums. However, we try to keep the instrumental kind of rough in the beginning, so that we are still able to go in any direction when we team up with a vocalist/ songwriter. Most of the time the final version of a track differs a lot from its initial idea because we
52

keep changing things throughout that creative process. That’s the beauty of making music! We use Logic Pro X as our main workstation with many additional external plugins. We also use some analogue synthesizers such as a Moog Little Phatty or the Yamaha DX7. They always add a nice, warm color to a production. How did the collaboration with Ziggy Alberts come about? Do you have any other collaborations coming? We discovered Ziggy’s music last year and instantly fell in love with his voice. It has such a special color and blends so well with the guitar he plays, so we decided to reach out to him. His management liked the idea as well of us making a remix of his song “Runaway”. Currently we are working on another remix for Ziggy. In addition to that, we have just released a remix for Amsterdam-based producer OIJ that came out on Epic Records Amsterdam/ Sony Music. These remixes were the first ones that got officially released. Usually our focus is on creating original music.
FEATURE
Do you have any up and coming releases that you could share with our readers? We just finished our next single. For this one we teamed up with an amazing singer from Berlin to make a Future Bass-like track. It will be released on Berlin-based label We Are Diamond soon. Have you been experimenting with any other genres? What made you guys choose deep house? We had been producing a bunch of different genres such as Techno, Progressive House, etc., before we started making melodic Deep House music. We like the idea of creating music that you can play live but that people can also listen to at home. In today’s electronic music world, all genres seem to merge more and more, so it is hard to categorize. For us the most important thing is to create your own sound, rather than sticking to a certain genre.
What are some of your inspirations? We grew up in a very musical family because our father is a Jazz musician, so we have always been exposed to all kinds of music. Artists that had the most impact on us are: Odesza, Rüfüs, M83, Lane 8, Andhim, and Snakehips - just to name a few. We are also really into this new wave of videography that is currently evolving with people such as Rory Kramer or Sam Kolder and how they combine motion picture and music. What are some of your aspirations for the next five years? Whats next for Y.V.E. 48? As a creative person it can be hard to plan ahead because you should always be open to new opportunities along the way - so right now we are focused on what’s right in front of us and excited to find out where it takes us! What can we expect at Mirror Bali next week? We are going to play a set filled with our own music and other tracks we love. Hoping to have a great night and spread good vibes! www.thebeatbali.com

There’s nothing better than a good live music performance to move your body or engage in an impromptu singalong session. And then there’s jazz— the enabler of the spontaneous and combustible — with solo sessions from individual band members to bring the house down. As seen by their performance at The Orchard the other night, the band Vaha certainly radiates that invisible and sometimes hard to find, intangible quality. But, to be clear, Vaha’s mastermind, pianist Erik Sondhy, said that he doesn’t want his band to be pigeonholed into one particular genre. “We want to be like our namesake— Vaha—which means ‘Open Sea’ in Sanskrit,” he said. “We want to have the freedom in creating music and be open to various musical influences. For sure we want to create something easy listening but not easy playing, and one that has weight to it.”
54
www.thebeatbali.com
Vaha was born in December 2016 and comprises of seven musically-gifted individuals: Sondhy (keyboard); Dewa Agung Perdana (guitar), Andro Yopi (bass), Arie Kurniawan (sax), Jonathan Dangawa (drums), and the lovely Damaris De Fretes and Tia Muller supplying the vocals. In terms of music-making, everyone is bringing their own distinctive groove to the table. “It’s an ‘old-school’ way of making music,” Sondhy said. “I might create three intros and then have the other members contribute to the song.” A far cry, added the Indonesian Institute of the Arts-graduate Dangawa, “from today’s tendency of writing music through a computer program.” “And I think it’s good that we all have a base in jazz music because now it’s part of our lifestyle,” said Perdana, a seasoned session player who started his career with Balawan. “We have that improvisational spirit.”

Erik Sondhy launches new band, “Vaha”
There’s a new band in town, and they’re adding a lot of flair and talent to the local musical scene. Though some of the band members are new to the game they certainly possess the poise to have a go: Dangawa is a firecracker drummer; De Fretes and Muller have a sultry presence, as well as a knack for lyricwriting and vocals to boot; while Kurniawan, Yopi, and Perdana have that prerequisite showmanship fit for the stage.
want to be 80 percent original, and 20 percent cover songs. And we hope that we could follow the route of indie bands in Bali who are able to tour across Indonesia playing their music.” Next up: into the studio they go to create their first single in June. And each of them can’t wait for the creative process to start pouring in.
And, of course, there’s Erik Sondhy (nicknamed Mister Finger), a veteran of the Bali music scene and a regular in Ryoshi’s House of Jazz as part of the Rio Sidik Quartet. His imprint in music dates back more than a decade, and in 2016, he released his solo piano album titled London Blues which he recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studio—the place where his alltime favorite band, The Beatles, churned out all those iconic records.
“I think we all have strong characters that complement each other,” said Muller.
He assured that Vaha will be consistent in creating original music. “We don’t want to fall into the trap of a ‘café band’, where they rarely make something original,” he said. “We
You can catch Vaha live at Ryoshi on June 16 but follow their social media account (@vaha_band) to check out where Vaha will perform next.
“And we can build ‘soul’ with it,” added Maluku-born De Fretes. “But the most important thing is it’s all about chemistry,” said Sondhy. “When you form a band, you’re also creating a family.” Can’t wait for the next family gathering.

Spinning Tradition with Bali Fashion Trend 2018 The trend is out, and the traditional and the contemporary have never looked better.

FEATURE Bali Fashion Trend 2018 was successfully held at TS Suites for three whole days from May 19 – 21, and in line with the mission of the Indonesian Fashion Chamber (IFC), the show has certainly highlighted the archipelago’s rich fashion heritages. Balinese ikat endek cloth was favored by designer Lusi Damai and Dhevinta Tito as they incorporated the material to their contemporary dresses, as did Elizabeth Njo May Fen—under her brand, Ketique—with batik kawung and Dwi Iskandar, who is also the chairman of Bali region’s IFC, with the colorful woven cloth of Jembrana that he stylishly transformed into casual work garb. But not all had a spin on tradition—Oka Diputra unveiled his elegant couture line complemented with regal headpieces; Yon Yulizar dressed his models in huge and voluminous Victorianinspired skirts; while Ali Charisma, showed his men’s line, and Angeliqa Wu opted for more contemporary and hip getups. There were over 40 designers in total.

ucked neatly just below the lobby on the promenade level, this uber chic eatery is a super sleek haven of cutting edge design – the large textured works of art and impressive features mean that it is so much more than just a trendy place to eat. Cool greens and vast swathes of beige stone, coupled with large glass panels from floor to ceiling give the feeling of immense space, which is lucky because it needs to be big to fit in one of the biggest brunch buffet selections in Bali. With a selection of food as wide as the world itself, The Cafe is well known as a brunch venue par excellance, with numerous live cooking stations threaded into the design throughout its spacious interior - each one representing an authentic type of cuisine. Oh, and next door there are more dessert options than you can shake a stick at, the centerpiece of which is a huge chocolate fountain, perched above a revolving ice cream container with 20 artisanal flavours. All good news for hungry brunchers, but making matters even sweeter is the fact that there is a native chef behind each type of cuisine, meaning that everything you pile onto your plate has been created with the utmost authenticity and integrity. There are not many places where you are presented with such a variety of choice, and it’s all quite a sight for eager epicurean appetites, so the first thing I do is order a cold beverage from the drinks menu. From there on in it’s just a blur of cold cuts, cheeses, oysters, poached prawn and crab, sashimi, sushi, curries, roasts, pastas, chocolate, ice cream and a ton of other mouthwatering delectables that I don’t have space to list here. CD REVIEW

KASABIAN
For Crying Out Loud This time last year was a very, very good time to be in Leicester. Against staggering odds (5000-1 according to some bookies – less likely than finding Elvis alive), Claudio Ranieri and his plucky football team had risen to the very top of the Premiership, defeating giant clubs and generally causing mass hysteria amongst gobsmacked fans who were more used to watching drizzly no score draws. Jumping quite literally on the bandwagon, Kasabian held a couple of free gigs at the team’s King Power Stadium as part of the ecstatic citywide celebrations. Predictably They went down an absolute storm, thanks in part to the celebratory mood, but also because the Leicester quartet have gotten really damn good at making music that makes you want to mosh. Off the back of the gigs, Tom, Serge & the other two (who ever remembers the drummer or bassist?) dived back into the studio to churn out another collection of guitar-driven psychedelic pub-rock, in-part inspired by their hometown club’s unprecedented success.
sing when you’re winning
A year on, however, and it’s a very different story in the Midlands. In the interim, Leicester City more or less limped through this year’s season to finish a very average twelfth, and by the time the album was actually released, the previous year’s elation had long since dissipated. Not that it really matters though, because For Crying Out Loud is another banger, stuffed full of big, loud, stadium sing-along anthems. Familiar sounding new melodies worm their way into your skull immediately, from stormsome opener ‘Ill Ray’ and the glorious disco stomp of ‘Are You Looking For Action?’ to the instantly toe-tapping “Good Fight” or lead single ‘You’re in Love With a Psycho’. Whether you’re into the footie-fan-blokeyrock aura or not, there’s no denying that these songs are the sound of joy – simple and uncomplicated little pleasures that will help a few pub-garden beers go down a treat. Considering the current run of awful news from around the globe, that’s no bad thing at all. Dan Ashcroft

LIBRA ( 23 September – 22 October )
CAPRICORN ( 22 December – 19 January )
Financially you will stay in a comfortable zone, its the professional hurdles which will not leave you alone. Working under others will be a challenge. Those who’ve been pursuing certain avenues, not out of personal choice but perhaps through external pressures or the need to please others, may have an opportunity to pursue a calling or direction more in keeping with their true, authentic self. AQUARIUS ( 20 January – 18 February )
You are having a conflict of interest with your feelings, thoughts and desires. This is causing you a great deal of confusion. You need to set some goals. However, the burden is soon to be lifted or the problem soon to be solved. The load can be physical, mental or emotional but something can be done to help lighten the weight. Even though something was lost, something still remains. Look at what can be salvaged. There are new alternatives to be explored within the loss. Favorable Dates : 4, 8, 13 Favorable Colors : Red & Yellow
There’s a very good chance that you are working far too hard for far too little recognition and money. You may need to look outside your own area of network for helpful information in how the work you do is done elsewhere - this could lead to some very interesting realizations. Your financial situation is likely to take a turn for the better. If you’re in the market for some big ticket items, don’t scrimp on your homework. Follow your instincts about what is best for your health, work and love. Seek out mentors with more information than you have. Favorable Dates : 1, 8, 10 Favorable Colors : Red & White

Your efforts on the final touches will bring you material gain, approval and recognition by others. You will experience a great sense of achievement and it is well deserved. If you are single, this can indicate the beginning of a new love relationship heading your way. Make yourself available for love in whatever way makes sense to you. Favorable Dates : 3, 8, 12 Favorable Colors : Red & Blue

ART
Emy Triani Hailing from Negara, Emy Triani was born into an art environment, knowing and loving art since she can remember. Her inspiration comes from her own roots in Balinese culture, poured beautifully on canvas for her beautiful, colorful and detailed works. For her, art is a wonderful thing that she shares so that it can be enjoyed together. Can you briefly introduce yourself please? I was born to a father who was a painter. Since childhood, I learned to paint from my father. Then, I decided to go to the High School of Arts in Batubulan to support my artistic soul academically. What is your greatest motivation to become an artist? I liked to draw since I was a kid and often joined drawing competitions. I always wished to be a painter with strong character, taking a part in the art scene of Bali. How did you first dive into the world of art? I was introduced to the canvas in my teens. During junior high school, my first painting was on display at Rambut Siwi Temple and sold. At that very young age, I could already enjoy my own money which I earned from selling the paintings. What is your inspiration? I’m often inspired by the activities of the Balinese people, so most of my works evolve around this traditional Balinese theme. What characteristics would you give yourself in your works? I always work on the theme of beauty. For me, painting is not only a condition or activity; it’s also a prayer and hope that I wish to come true. www.thebeatbali.com

OSSOTEL
Ossotel Jl. Padma Utara, Legian. T. 754 122 www.ossotel.com
A m od e r n t rop i ca l exp er ien ce in t h e h ea r t o f Legia n
LOCATION If you want to be in the middle of all sorts of vibrant happenings then a stay at Ossotel in Legian would be oh-so-ideal. This recipient of a 2015 World Luxury Hotel Award is nestled in the bustling Padma area where cafes, restaurants, and sports bars are never in short supply. From here it’s also easy to get to Beachwalk Shopping Center, Waterbom Park, and the renowned Eat Street of Seminyak. Plus, the iconic Padma Beach is mere minutes away! If your hotel’s location is a top priority, with only a 15-minute drive to and from Ngurah Rai International Airport, Ossotel has arguably got it covered. LOOK Very stylish and contemporary, which the unique exterior clearly shows. Ossotel’s sleek front architecture with high windows against a crisscrossed framework soon turned into a modern tropical look as you walk further into their interior, accentuated with their 88-meter lagoon swimming pool that’ll make you want to jump in! ATMOSPHERE Hip and a touch sophisticated. The playful buzz here certainly borrows from its modern

and tropical design; from the fun-under-thesun vibe by spending the day lounging around at Ossotel’s Beach Club or underneath an umbrella at the daybeds next to the pool, right to the rustic ambiance of Romeos Bar and Grillery located at the entrance of the hotel. FEATURES Ossotel offers three types of rooms: Superior, Deluxe Pool, and Suite, each designed with a modern tropical style with contemporary furnishings that are equipped with high speed Wi-Fi connectivity, 39-inch LED TV (the Suite offers a bigger one with 55-inch LED), DVD Player, individually controlled AC, in-room safe deposit box, en suite bathroom, and many others. Their Deluxe Pool room provides direct access to the lagoon swimming pool, while the 50sqm Suite is complemented with a private balcony or terrace overlooking the pool. And a stop at the brick-walled Romeos Bar & Grillery is definitely a must: one of the favorites amongst Legian visitors, the restaurant offers a hodge-podge of delectable Western and Asian menu (please do try their signature in-house traditional grill) and an exciting selection of fine wine and signature cocktails. $$$
SPA
THE SPA
@ THE TRANS RESORT BALI Where they offer holistic treatments, inspired by Balinese philosophies.
The Spa The Trans Resort Bali, Jl. Sunset Road, Kerobokan, Kuta T. 898 1234 LOOK Located in a cozy nook among the lush gardens, The Spa at The Trans Resort Bali is truly a sanctuary. It has eight treatment rooms, including six single rooms and two couple’s rooms, and each comes with private shower, luxury robe and adjustable massage bed. Elegant and spacious, the spa’s interior is beautified with vintage décor, featuring an antique carved wooden door, wooden furnishings and traditional clothes that add a strong traditional ambience into the mix. FEEL Our experience at The Spa was great, as we had their 60-minute “Balinese Massage” (660k) which was so relaxing yet therapeutic. Developed in Bali yet drawing its roots from traditional Chinese massage and Indian Ayurveda philosophy, this treatment works deeply to soothe damaged tissues, as well as to relieve strained muscles and joint pains. Our treatment began with a ritual foot bath where our feet were cleansed in warm water which had been added with sea salt crystal. Sea salt scrub was also applied to exfoliate our skin, ending with a gentle massage on our legs. The body massage was then done afterward, using a combination of long gliding, firm kneading and skin rolling, applied gently along the pressure points to warm and relax the tissues. These movements were also able to boost our blood circulation, thus helping
84
www.thebeatbali.com
rebalance our entire wellness system. This treatment was also very personalized, so we got our needs covered by our therapist as she really worked harder on areas we would like to focus on – just as we had requested prior to the treatment. After 60 minutes, what we had was a really refreshed body and mind, getting us ready to face the rest of the day. INGREDIENTS This treatment uses Sweet Orange essential oil which also has almond oil added. This aromatic oil provides a relaxing effect for your body and mind, and is also great for skin health as it helps bring back its glow. MAGIC The Spa is a welcoming sanctuary for those who wish to revitalize their mind, body and spirit, offering bespoke treatments which are inspired by Balinese philosophies. Their extensive menu includes a selection of body massages, couple treatments, body treatments, and hand and foot treatments, all designed to provide an entirely new, holistic experience for their guests. In addition to these offers, their treatments are also very personalized to meet guests’ needs. Prior to their treatments, guests are asked to complete their consultation sheets, so that the therapists will know what they want, as well as their body conditions.
GIZMOS This little Mechanical DIY Safe is just the right size to keep a few small items secure. But the best part of this little contraption is that it’s a kit you put it together yourself. Made from premium grade plywood, the 179 pieces are scored and ready for you to punch out and put together. It’s a fun project that requires no tools (although you may wish to have a craft knife handy and a small hammer to help things fit). We recommend that little kids have adult supervision, to help understand instructions, provide brute force, and keep the smaller pieces from snapping. And once you’re done, you have an actual functioning safe that can hide away your goodies. USD $54.99 from www.thinkgeek.com
MECHANICAL DIY SAFE
HAM DOGGER
PREMIUM INNOVATIVE DEFROSTING TRAY
Defrosting frozen food on a counter top takes hours and exposes it to bacteria. Defrosting in a microwave or hot water can damage food and wipe out its nutrients. The Premium Innovative Defrosting Tray is the modern alternative — a fast and hygienic way to thaw all frozen foods without heat, electricity, hot water or the risk of foodborne illness. The secret is the bio-safe “thermo liquid” center that draws cold away from the food. Place your food directly on top and it thaws completely in just 10-30 minutes! A gently angled surface directs liquids to a drip catcher for mess-free use. 100% non-toxic, with no heavy metals or plasticizers. USD $99.99 www.sharperimage.com This is the canvas that reinforces a perpetual zen-like mindset when its owner’s waterbased, slate-grey creations evaporate in minutes. Made from a proprietary, natural material, the canvas absorbs water from strokes made with the included brush, which disappear in about three minutes, encouraging one to live in the moment. With an integrated water tray/stand at its bottom, the canvas may be placed in portrait (12” high) or landscape (10” high) position and its notches secure the brush when not in use. Though letting go of one’s creation practices the Buddhist principle of impermanence, an unexpectedly vivid image may still be captured with a smartphone. USD $39.95 from www. hammacher.com
THE ETERNAL ZEN WATER CANVAS.
This two-piece cylindrical mould transforms 1/4 pound of ground beef (or anything, really) into a gorgeous Hot-Dog-shaped treat. The result is healthier, tastier and infinitely cooler than your average flavourless wiener. You can use fresh mince or just squidge some actual burger patties inside – there’s even a ridge on the reverse of the mould that makes it easy to insert fillings like onions, gooey cheese etc. GBP £12.99 from www.firebox.com
