SHAHADA

DJs Jaux Ion and Agoes Mulyadi are on their way to spin in Melbourne. Two of Bali’s best loved psy trance DJs will be spinning their wares at Melbourne’s Earthcore Festival later this year. They go under the name of Shahada but we/you know them better as DJ Jaux Ion & DJ/Producer Agoes Mulyadi. Shahada is the stage name for when they write, produce and perform their own original tracks as well as remixes in the Psy Trance scene. We spoke with their manager and Agoes’ wife, Mel Mulyadi about the Earthcore Festival, Psy Trance and the boys last week.

FEATURE

Tell me a bit about the psy trance music scene. The psy trance family is one big happy family and the sharing and collaboration is amazing. It is such a misunderstood genre of music. I love that these days when Raja Ram plays at festivals he is there with his wife, daughter and granddaughter. His son-in-law is also a psy trance DJ. So why is it a misunderstood genre of music? Well many people think you can only enjoy the music if you are off your face on something or other, but it’s a lot more than that. EDM is starting to slow down in clubs and psy trance is gaining traction. Some people consider psy trance pretty hard. What do you think? Mainstream music lovers might and the Goa style of psy trance is, but the popular producers these days tend to lean towards the progressive side of the genre. The creative side is amazing. The way the producers create the sound and the bassline is just awesome. They used to play a lot of psy at 66 before right? Yes correct, but more Goa style. The Shahada style is more melodic and harmonic but also can consist of a harder bassline and also psychedelic traditional sounds. A bit like classic trance with a harder beat. So how long have Agoes and Ion been spinning tracks? Agoes since 1988 - Spotlight, Topaz, BB and Ion since 1991 Janger, Scandal, 66 and Deejay Club. Agoes took a long break to pursue some other business interests and was a stay at home dad. Ion has been DJing mostly the whole time with a few short breaks. Agoes came back to the scene about four years ago.

Shahada have been producing a lot of tracks lately. What are the standouts? One of the early ones, Purnama for sure. Agoes loves that track and it had a great reaction on the dance floor just last week. Other older standouts are Shahada and Faith and the new ones Tell Me Your Name, Take Me To The Edge. What’s the story behind the Brianna vocal track, Tell Me Your Name? Awesome track, by the way. Agoes didn’t have a name for the track and Brianna came over to listen to it so that she could write some lyrics. She had the idea of two people on the dance floor dancing away and the girl wanting to know his name and thus, Tell Me Your Name came to life. Brianna is our god daughter and her mum and dad have been our friends for 25 years. (For those out of the loop, Brianna is seen on Indonesian TV singing a lot and has a new single out soon. Ed). How did Shahada come about? Agoes started producing tracks early last year but felt he needed it to be a two person project. So he invited Ion to join. Both have solid music backgrounds. Both play instruments. And the name? The reason we went with the spelling of SHAHADA, which generally means having faith, was that it sounded cool and ran off the tongue easily. Tell me a bit about the Earthcore Festival in Melbourne later this year. It’s a huge three day event that has been going for 24 years. It’s outdoor and features techno thru to psy trance. The boys are very happy to be part of it. Until then you can listening to some of their tracks on Soundcloud or catch them spinning at Deejay Club, Kuta. https://soundcloud.com/agoesmulyadi

LEBARAN IN BALI What’s it like to celebrate Muslims’ big day in Bali? 42

www.thebeatbali.com

Later this month, Muslims all over the world will celebrate the end of their month-long self-purification ritual of fasting, undertaken during Ramadam, with Idul Fitri 1438, which this year falls on June 25. Urban dwellers will return to their hometown en masse to hold prayers and reconnect with family followed by a big feast featuring ketupat (rice cake wrapped in woven palm leaf). Due to its majority Hindu population, Bali will not experience rare sights such as in Jakarta where the streets are traffic-free during the celebrations. Around 1,6 million people are expected to be traveling out of Bali by road, and this year the airport is predicted to be even crowded than before with news of an additional 369 flights around Lebaran. But of course, because of the almost weeklong holidays, many people will travel to Bali

FEATURE

as well. Almost every hotel will be offering their own irresistible Ramadan promos, such as Hard Rock Hotel which will have its Lebaran Funtastic Program (June 24 – 25), including a Sunset Market and fun games such as the Ketupat Rock Wall Challenge and a Sack Race. Entertainment and Ramadan Bazaars will never be in short supply in Bali, and in fact, this month many popular brands like 69Slam! and Rip Curl are having their annual sales, which fits right in with one of Idul Fitri’s traditions: buying new clothes. Meanwhile, for a culturally-rich fun day or night out, the must-see 39th Bali Arts Festival is taking place right now in Denpasar until July 8th. That’s not to say that there aren’t particular Islamic traditions taking roots in Bali. In Kampung Islam, Kepaon, in South Denpasar, Loloan Village in Jembrana, and Pegayaman Village in Buleleng, there is an admirable

tradition called Ngejot where during Idul Fitri people will be delivering their special homecooked meals to their neighbors, including non-Muslim ones. (And Hindunese will reciprocate their generosity during their own big day, Galungan.) There’s also the megibung (sharing with others) tradition practiced in Singaraja where they will serve food on an enormous plate (or banana leaves in the past) and together people from all religious backgrounds or ethnicities are welcomed to eat together. In a world increasingly divided, it’s heartening to know that religious inclusion is still happening in some pockets of the archipelago. And the best thing is that Bali will be busy like never before with visitors from all over the world and around the corner coming for holidays. Enjoy. www.thebeatbali.com

Poppies Restaurant

B

ack in 1973 when Kuta and Legian were just a couple of small fishing villages, a humble little restaurant opened just off Jalan Legian. Known as ‘Poppies’, it was only accessible via a small dirt track that was subsequently named Poppies Lane. Over 40 years later and that same little restaurant is still there – an oasis of tranquility now surrounded by the hubbub of central Kuta. Awash with vintage ambiance and the sounds of classic jazz, stepping through the almost hidden doorway into Poppies is like going through some kind of time warp. Solid wooden chairs and antique furnishings are scattered throughout the garden area, and compliment the tastefully old-fashioned décor. A number of ponds and fountains quietly burble away, while friendly waiters pad to and fro along the interconnecting pathways between tables – some of whom have been working here since

52

www.thebeatbali.com

the beginning. The all-encompassing menu takes in breakfast, lunch and dinner, with both Indonesian and International fare on offer – all firmly tried and tested by seasoned local chef Pak Agung, who divides his time between Poppies and its sister restaurant Kopi Pot back up on Jl. Legian. A friend and I stop by late afternoon and grab a spot in the garden bale, before ordering up a couple of the famous Poppies Tequila Sunsets (95k++) happy to be enjoying the retro vibe. We get stuck right into a plate of the excellent Vegetable Salad (55++) that incorporates soft avocados, sweet boiled new potatoes and crunchy croutons doused in a tangy yoghurt dressing. It’s a perfectly simple, perfectly satisfying appetizer, and gets the thumbs up all round. We also share out a portion of the classic Garlic Prawns (69k++) – simply divine, doused in the garlic butter and spread across

soft slices of brown bread. For the mains, I tuck into the Barramundi Florentine (102k++), which is poached to perfection and comes dressed with a tangy white wine sauce. The flavours are perfectly balanced and it’s impossible to fault, although I do feel a mild twinge of food envy when my friend’s Shish Kebabs (112k++) show up. Served on two skewers atop a traditional sate mini barbeque, the tandoori flavour complimented by the light raita dip is spot-on. A side of sultana rice and a salad adds the final touches. Plates duly scraped clean, and we decide to split a portion of the enormous Pannacotta (39k++) to finish up on a sweet note, before diving back into another couple of Tequila Sunsets to see out the rest of the evening.

You couldn’t find a better location for a tropical Bali, Sunday Brunch than the beachside Arwana restaurant at The Laguna. Sitting by the blue water lagoon on the white sand or paving, under the shade of the tree foliage is cool and comfortable. You also have the choice of being in the airconditioned space inside. I can’t recall tastier and fresher seafood at a brunch. The BBQ out by the shore also offers delicious grilled meats and fish. Roast carving stations, cold meats, and everything else one

The FeelGood brand was recently launched and introduced a slew of stylish pajamas that could be worn for both nighttime and casual daytime activities as they are made with batik motifs, double gauze cotton from Japan, and cotton-silk sari from India. GO LOCAL, THINK TROPICAL WITH FRANKSLAND’S LATEST COLLECTION For a smart and relaxed getup head down to Franksland. The 15-year-old Bali-based brand helped define that particular look with their sophisticated yet “breathable” designs for men and women, and recently they launched their Indonesian Heritage Series, introducing various eyecatching, beach-ready shirts, blazers, and shorts that sport tropical signatures as well as local motifs. Favorites include the warm-colored batik shirts and the Sumba shorts that are cut from lightweight cotton and printed with Sumba motifs. Franksland also just introduced their Island Series Fragrance that is inspired by three islands: Borneo (woods, lime, citrus), Lombok (chilly and pepper), and Flores (clove and pine). CD REVIEW

7/10 high season

LITTLE DRAGON Season High

Five albums in and it seems that Gothenberg four-piece Little Dragon have musically settled into some kind of rhythm. Where 2014’s Namuba Rubberband laid down their new blueprint of 80’s electro pop, here Season High refines it. It’s a confident sounding work, full of catchy hooks, sharp choruses and sparkly synthesizers. Tracks like “Sweet” and “Strobe Light” provide the clubby beats, while “Should I” and opener “Celebrate” chime along to sampled oriental keyboard presets straight off a 1980’s Casio. Contrasting nicely with the above are the more downtempo moments like “Butterflies” and the falsetto lullaby “Don’t Cry”, but really it all seems to click best on the more upbeat material.

Pulling it all together is the compelling front woman Yukimi Nagano - her soulful vocals elevating everything they touch in much the same way that her numerous guest spots have helped acts like Gorillaz and De La Soul. The album’s other great strength is just how economical it sounds. Aside from the rambling 7 minute closer “Gravity”, each track bounces into the next with very little fuss to make up an LP that clocks in at under 45 minutes. There is a nagging sense that some of the tracks like “High” could have been shifted up a gear more frequently (after all, the title isn’t talking about altitude) – but Season High is so dreamily cheerful it’s hard not to love anyway. Now – June 30 Griya Santrian Gallery

Now – July 14 Artotel Sanur

Griya Santrian Gallery presents ‘Vague Memories’, an exhibition by Ida Bagus Putu Purwa. This exhibition sees the artist showcase his darknuanced works, showing how he struggles with creative ideas that are stimulated largely from the objective reality of himself. He explains that the idea of his latest series starts from recordings of events that occur in his life, which have become an anxiety that stimulates him to work. It is translated through charcoal and paint which he has used for the last few years. This combination of both dry and wet media results in his distinctive visual characteristic which seems dark and gloomy. Griya Santrian Gallery, Griya Santrian, Jl. Danau Tamblingan 47, Sanur.

A r t o t e l Sanur is back with their latest group exhibition titled ‘What’s Next’. A continuation of a group exhibition with the same title in Ubud, this exhibition is bound to present the essence of street art, featuring works by nine artists. This exhibition has also been an artistic platform where the artists are challenged to respond their own cultural backgrounds with their own styles and genres, infusing it with their urban contemporary elements. Artotel Sanur, Jl. Kusuma Sari No. 1, Sanur.

Now – August 26 CushCush Gallery CushCush Gallery currently hosts its latest exhibition titled ‘DenPasar 2017’. As the capital city of Bali, Denpasar is known as the centre of business district and seat of government. The etymology of the word ‘Denpasar’ is ‘North of Market’, suggesting the origin of the city that developed from the strong presence of the market. Therefore, ‘pasar’ (market) has been picked as the theme of this exhibition. For this exhibition, 17 artists and four creative art communities have been selected to observe, understand, relearn and represent the meaning of ‘pasar’ and Denpasar in today’s creatives’ diverse perspectives. CushCush Gallery, Jl Teuku Umar, Gg. Rajawali No. 1A, Denpasar.

ART

Rekam Jalan Now – June 30 Tukang Kopi District Seven exhibitors currently showcase their works at Tukang Kopi District in an exhibition titled ‘Rekam Jalan’. They choose the genre of street photography as they think that streets always offer interesting events and stories. Not many photo exhibitions with this genre are held in Bali; it is normally focused on fine art, culture, portrait and so on. Therefore, these seven exhibitors try to offer an exhibition that lifts daily events on the streets. | Tukang Kopi District, Jl. Tukad Batanghari No. 66, Denpasar

Rebirth Now – July 15 Titian Art Space Titian Art Space is back with its latest exhibition, showcasing the works by young Balinese artist, Wayan Aris Sarmanta. Titled ‘Rebirth’, this exhibition marks the artist’s solo debut. Moreover, it also celebrates the newest chapter within the traditional techniques of the Batuan school, which last had a major shift in the 1930s. Here, the artist’s latest works unequivocally demonstrate the new path he has undertaken since his first major group exhibition in 2013 at the Museum Puri Lukisan. While maintaining traditional Batuan technique, he has also added elements of social and political change around him into his works. | Titian Art Space, Jl. Bisma No. 88, Ubud www.thebeatbali.com

ART

Myra Juliarti Myra Juliarti is best known as the brain behind a local clothing brand, Siji. Not only does she have a unique approach to fashion, which you can see from her brand’s collections, this lady also has an artsy side which is admirable. At CushCush Gallery, she is currently sharing her ideas about the city of Denpasar through her distinctive mixed-media work. Many know you as a fashion designer. However, here you do art. What is the background behind it? We, the exhibitors, were asked to make two-dimensional work with a specified size. I thought that this is different from what I usely make, which is three-dimensional work with an unspecific size, so I have to expand my creativity. How would you differ creating art from fashion designing? Actually, this process of creating art is not much different from what I’ve been doing all this while, starting from finding inspiration, conceptualizing and designing, to creating the work. Meaning that creating art and fashion designing have minor differences for you. What are they? Of course, besides the final results. Both are indeed visual works. In designing a product, our main focus is on how to make that product practical, comfortable and functional. However, for a piece of art, it’s the visual provocation that must be stronger, whereas its functionality should not always exist. Now, tell us about your exhibited work. I created traffic signs, using laser-cutting acrylic with vinyl stickers on aluminum. I was interested to create traffic signs as

they are actually important things that you can find in every city. Unfortunately, there are still many people who are not aware of the importance of obeying these signs; some may not even understand the meanings. In the end, these traffic signs are made only to ‘beautify’ the streets. Bringing it to my work, this is the condition that I use as a medium to tell the audiences about the movements at Kumbasari Market, seen from perspectives of its chronology, character and costume sides. Final question; does art play an important role when you design clothes? Inspiration usually comes from things that evoke the senses, and it can be from many things, including art. After it turns out to be a product, I see that art acts as one of its selling powers. A product will be telling more when there are elements of art in it. So, yes, art does play an important role when I’m designing Siji. www.thebeatbali.com

DEMADA SPA

A rejuvenating spa treatment in an authentic Balinese surrounding

Look Let’s talk about where this spa is located first: the wonderfully quaint Hotel Vila Lumbung in which the lodgings are in the form of thatchedroof villas. Demada Spa occupies one of these huts: small yet intimate with only two couples treatment rooms available, plus you can also have treatments in the gazebo by the lagoonlike swimming pool—complete with a mini waterfall—if you prefer to have an indulgent experience outdoors. Feel Truly a mind and body booster! We tried the rejuvenating Aroma Relax treatment (IDR210k) for 90 minutes, a combination of a traditional Balinese massage and warm aromatherapy oil treatment. It’s got to be said, Demada Spa has one of the best therapists in Bali, who from the get go started with a strong grip and never wavered, even for a second. It began with nerve-stimulating and muscle-relaxing acupressure on several points on the back and the legs, before slathering the warm aromatic oils starting from the feet and legs with fine, solid strokes and kneading that finishes off with a firm skin rolling and flicking that definitely gave the body a certain jolt followed by complete relaxation.

Ingredients There are three skin-friendly warm essential oil options for the treatment: the soothing coconut oil that has antimicrobial properties and skinnourishing vitamin E; the delicious chocolate essential oil rich in antioxidants that promote softer skin and boosts production of collagen; and the refreshing lemongrass essential oil to relieve aching muscles and joints. Magic Demada Spa’s Aroma Relax is designed to wake up the mind and body, especially for those who are under a lot of stress (which can translate itself to a tense body) or jetlag. And it certainly does the trick as posttreatment our body felt super refreshed and energetic, leadint to a positive side effect: better posture and mood. The use of essential oils dates to the age-old Ayurveda teachings, and the warm temperature certainly makes it easier for our body to absorb its beneficial properties which include improved circulation, boosting stamina, toned muscles, enhanced mental alertness, and, yes, softer skin. And my, what a massage… [Sahiri]

REnextop Asian Surfing Tour (RAST) a Success in Canggu

The groundbreaking first stop of the REnextop Asian Surfing Tour (RAST) wrapped up last Sunday afternoon in Canggu, Bali after four exciting days of competition to crown winners in four divisions and celebrate their victory at nearby Premier Surf Camp. In the last final of the day, the Men’s Shortboard Division saw Indonesia’s Rio Waida claim victory over fellow Indonesian Darmaputra in a closely contested 25 minute final. “I had so much fun in that final with Tonjo (Darmaputra), the waves were firing. I’m so stoked to win this event,” said Rio at the awards party. “Tonjo almost got that score at the last minute, and I was just out the back sitting there nervously, as I could only watch and hope, and luckily for me he didn’t,” he added.

Rio goes home with a new Chilli surfboard, $1,000 cash, a nice REnextop trophy and some FU Wax to make sure his feet stay stuck to his board in the next competition. In the Men’s Longboard Division it was twotime World Longboard Champion Harley Ingleby from Australia taking out fellow Australian Jack Entwistle in the glassy 3-4 foot righthanders. Ingleby’s power, poise, and the variety of maneuvers he executed with unshakable precision had the audience and judges on the beach wowed. Ingleby received $1,000 cash as well as FU Wax and a handmade REnextop trophy. The Women’s Shortboard Division was won by one of the youngest competitors in the event, 14 year old Summa Longbottom. Summa is Australian but lives in Bali, the daughter of shaper and big wave charger Dylan Longbottom.

Dylan was also in the competition and finished equal third in the Men’s Shortboard Division. In the Women’s Longboard Division it was a surprise victory for Korea’s Jina Kim over Daisy Valdez from the Philippines. While Daisy waited outside for the larger waves, Jina picked of the smaller runners on the inside that offered more noseriding opportunities, which the judges were scoring more highly. There were a total of 64 surfers competing in the event, from countries including Australia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and Taiwan. Lillian Chen, the CEO of REnextop, was extremely delighted at the conclusion of event, saying “It was beyond our expectations in every way, from the number of surfers from all over Asia that joined, to the level of surfing by the

competitors, and the awesome waves we had, it was all absolutely perfect. And considering it was our very first event, we’re just so happy! Taking our Chinese surfers outside of China and giving them the experience of surfing with pro surfers from other countries is our goal, and we certainly accomplished that here. And through one of our media partners in China we broadcast the event live every day to our Chinese audience, and had over 5,000 views per day, so we’re able to share this experience with the larger audience and encourage them to participate in the future. I’m already looking forward to the next event in Japan, and I hope we get lots of surfers coming there as well. A big thanks to the ASC, the PSC, and all the sponsors for making this event such as success!” RAST #2 will be held in Japan, tentatively in September, so look for an announcement in early July for details. www.thebeatbali.com
