HEALTHY FEATURE FOOD Alchemy

Alchemy was the first raw vegan restaurant to open in Ubud and has become a coveted hotspot for foodies, vegans and anyone with a desire to try something new! Starting out as a humble juice bar in 2011 to becoming a way of life for so many people on the island, Alchemy has built its reputation solely on the quality of its produce. From the cold press juices to the inventive breakfast menu, renown salad bar, raw chocolate delights and home-made coffee, Alchemy is a temple of goodness waiting for your body to enjoy. With over 100 staff behind the scenes creating and making sure every item on the menu is pristine, including the Balinese Ibu Ibu in the kitchen to the younger generations washing and re-washing their lettuce from the organic garden, it is no surprise that this restaurant is known to have customers repeatedly visit throughout the week. If you thought it couldn’t get better, their waste management will make you feel the love for our planet, with all their plastics bio-degradable and their food waste delivered to the local Green School for their compost – Alchemy is on top of the game.

Café Organic

Opened in early 2016 with the basics of organic produce and sustainable living, Café Organic can be found on Jl. Petitenget and in Canggu on Jl. Batu Bolong. Their health conscious vegetarian meals are a delight for your body and a spectacle for the camera. With their very own farm full of locally grown vegetables & fruits and the option of nearly every item on the menu being made vegan and/or gluten free, Café Organic is a must-go for anyone vegan. A big stand point that sets them apart from the rest is that they make all their ingredients from scratch, including delicious almond milk, cashew milk, potato hash browns, tomato relish and coconut bacon to name a few. With sustainability at heart, these garden gangstas make sure all the waste is properly taken care of, re-fueling their farm with all the recyclable materials going straight into their compost. Described as the most instagramable Café on the island, make some space to snap their overflowing smoothie bowls, fruit salads served in pineapple shells and popping rainbow juices! www.thebeatbali.com

FEATURE FOOD HEALTHY Earth Café

One of the first restaurants of its kind, Earth Café opened its vegan friendly doors in 2009 and has been on an upward, 100% plant based, spinning spiral ever since. The organic haven run by the marvelous Liat Solomon is the epitome of healthy eating. Its hand sourced ingredients are brought in from all corners of the globe and in terms of quality of food it doesn’t get better than this; for example the quinoa from Peru, the sesame seeds from Ethiopia, the sage from the Gola Mountains in the Middle East, the list goes on... Earth Café’s restaurant is only the tip of the iceberg though, they have an incredible selection of over a thousand ingredients for you to cook with at home, visit their market and find delicacies ranging from mixtures for smoothies and falafels to Medigold Tea-Tree Medicinal Honey. Find them in Ubud on Jl. Goutama Selatan or in Seminyak on Jl. Laksmana - or visit their new project Divine Earth which features a raw vegan cinema upstairs!

Motion

Popular restaurant Motion previously known as Avocado Café has gone through a change, focusing its energy on your fitness and dietary needs. Motion offers vegan and paleo friendly dishes, supporting local farmers and using as much organic produce as possible. Every dish has its unique twist and counted calories - if you are trying to gain or trying lose, there will be a dish suited to you. From all day breakfast to tropical salads, sweet potato waffles, home-made energy bars, pasta, burgers, soups, curries and stews – mention any food intolerances you might have and enjoy the freedom of eating your meal to your liking. If you would rather eat from home, look into their Weekly Menu, in which they offer a specific topic for each week like paleo, omega3 and high protein, delivered straight to your door. All their cakes are gluten, dairy and refined sugar free and have a delicious blend of their own coffee to accompany. Find them on Jalan Batu Bolong opposite Warung Bumi and get your fitness food today!

The Joglo

The Joglo is a family friendly, health conscious restaurant tucked up at the end of Jalan Pantai Berawa and Subak Sari. The huge structure that stands above the restaurant is actually called a Joglo, commonly known in Indonesia as the central part of the home where the family gathers. The concept behind the restaurant fits with this idea, giving families a multitude of entertainment options such as Pilates and (soon to be open) Yoga rooftop areas as well as an organic market and a kid’s playground! Their food selection is enormous, you could easily spend half an hour looking through their menu; from Warung Made’s very own Nasi Campur’s to Luca’s Pizza’s. Not to forget their extensively thought out healthy menu; featuring delicious wraps, love bowls, salads, pasta, burgers, smoothies, cold pressed juices and much more! If you aren’t convinced yet, go and join their free salsa classes on Saturday’s and get yourself in the mood!

INTERVIEW FEATURE

Liat Solomon She’s a lady with a business sense, vision and above all a healthy frame of mind. The Beat spoke with her about all those things.

Hello Liat, please tell us a little about yourself and how you came to be in Bali? I was born and raised in Israel, left at a young age and lived in New York for 12 years. I opened my first restaurant at the age of 19 in Tel Aviv and my second one at the age of 22. By the time I was 26 years old I was working and providing food for terminally ill cancer patients and people with all sicknesses – I did this for seven years in New York. I’ve always been a multi-tasker, I started with fashion but quickly got sick of that world and on my first trip to Bali I brought a suitcase full of food, created a food service from home, cooked, packed and delivered food for a year and by 2002 I opened Zula (on Jl. Dhyana Pura). Zula was the first vegetarian restaurant in Bali, it was the full package. I am crazy about what we put in our bodies, from the pots and pans to the water, the oil and all the process from the ground to our stomachs. This is what macrobiotics is all about.

How did you start this journey of healthy eating? Have you always had a healthy outlook on food? I started with food at the age of 15 and by 17 I was a full-blown vegetarian. I was a food and animal activist at a very young age. I started studying macrobiotics at the age of 18, volunteered for many macrobiotic conventions and workshops in America, from Miami to New York and really got into the community of macrobiotics. I became known for my cooking skills in macrobiotics, even cooking for the Dalai Lama when he visits Bali. I found my calling and I knew that this life was for me. Can you inform us about macrobiotics? Macro – Big. Bio – Life. Living with respect to everything in nature, the universe, humans, everything. Making yourself adapt to the climates, the seasons, helping you understand yourself better. In terms of consuming macrobiotics, you are basically eating in the www.thebeatbali.com

FEATURE INTERVIEW most natural way possible. The goal is to eat directly from the earth to your mouth, getting rid of all the technological mechanisms for food preparation and using old traditions to keep the impurities of modern day techniques behind. For example, never using a microwave. You will never find a Microwave in one of my kitchens. Cooking with as much natural material as possible, using stainless steel pots, clean water, natural salts, etc. Watch out for the dolphin salt in a blue and white bottle which is provided at nearly every restaurant in Bali as it contains Monosodium glutamate (MSG). It’s about choosing to not eat processed food, following the motto – you are what you eat. It seems like in our modern culture, we see cooking and even eating as another burden to endure in our busy lives. Can you please talk a little about the gift of self-nourishment and its effect on our physical, emotional and spiritual levels? There is a really interesting book that touches on this subject. It’s called Crime & Diet. Written in the 70’s and full of true stories. A group of scientists conducted an experiment in jails around the world with a group of about 100 hardcore prisoners, murderers and all. They fed them clean, organic food for 14 years and within this time they all had changed their state of mind and personality, felt remorse for their crimes and changed for the better. Which begs the question, what do criminals usually eat? A mix of junk food and meat. The vibrations of the food we eat resonate entirely with our body and our state of mind. One should always cook three meals a week for themselves. The energy and cycle centered on the creation of your food is really good for you. Compassion starts at home. Tell us a bit about the Vegan Festival. I’m a party girl and I love to dance. But I like to create my own parties. The festival is about awareness. You can say it is V for Vegan, V for Vendetta, V for Victory. I want to call on people with anything to contribute so we can reach as many people and work together. Kip Andersen will be joining the line-up of inspiring speakers from around the world who are passionate about animal rights, healthy lifestyles and saving the planet. Intrepid filmmaker Kip will

44

www.thebeatbali.com

discuss his new documentary ‘What the Health’ which will also be screened during the festival. Joining him will be veteran raw vegan runners Alan Murray and Janette Murray-Wakelin, who together ran around Australia (15,782km in 366 consecutive days) on a raw vegan diet to raise awareness for a sustainable future and conscious lifestyle choices. Representatives from the Humane Society International as well as the Indonesian Vegetarian Society and BAWA will take to the stage, plus renowned speaker James Aspey, for a talk on ‘How to be an Effective Activist’. Many more speakers and entertainment is yet to be announced. What is yoga to you? Have you found a style that you particularly enjoy? I have done a lot of yoga, I started doing it 27 years ago. I practice Jivamukti because it is what works best with my body. I think it’s a great form of exercise and body awareness. I wish people would realize that it all goes hand in hand, it comes with the food, being conscious of the environment. It’s about awareness, but yoga first of all is a massage for the internal organs, and of course a spiritual connection. What’s your opinion on Bali’s current health orientated movement? I am very happy that people are opening their minds but once something hits the mainstream, people lose perspective. All of a sudden all of these “vegan” restaurants are opening and you find lamb and pork on the menu? This is something that really bothers me. People come to Earth Café and then write review of us as being unfairly overpriced. Quality comes with a price and we make no compromises towards the quality and cleanliness of our food. For me it’s not only about the business or raising awareness, which is the bigger picture. For me it’s about nutrition, it’s about what your food is cooked in, where the grain for your bread comes from, where the water for your rice comes from. All these restaurants opening left and right, they can try and follow the trend but sooner or later they will be caught out.

THE PRACTICE

H

idden amongst the chaotic streets of Canggu’s surf hostels and artsy hip restaurants is The Practice, a place for a conscious community to practice the art, science and philosophy of authentic yoga. First opened back in February of 2016, the five star venue consists of two yoga studios, a coaching room and a common space overlooking a beautiful garden where you can sip on some tea and meet like-minded people. The main yoga studio is a round open space topped with a bamboo constructed ‘caping’ (rice field farmer hat) shaped roof, with a breeze and the sound of water and chimes to accompany through the experience. The Practice offers daily 90 minute classes of traditional and modern practices. The Moon practice is stage one of the Hatha practice, focusing on Asana, which is a seated posture that is firm but relaxed, and meditation to cultivate stability and calmness of both body and mind. Sun is stage two of the practice, an intermediate level and a more dynamic class that includes conscious Vinyasa which will have you moving and breathing deeply.

Fire is the final stage of Hatha which brings together all the elements of the practice and ignites the fire (Kundalini) within. They also teach Yin and Restorative Yoga which are slower practices where the poses are held for longer making them great for tight bodies and people who seek to feel deeply relaxed. At The Practice you can also find Kirtan, yoga teacher trainings, coaching courses and weekly workshops including free Tuesday night offerings at 7.45pm. Jamie’s Italian Kuta Beach by Jamie Oliver

A

mazingly it’s been over two years since everyone’s favourite cheeky chappie chef , Jamie Oliver threw open the doors to the Bali branch of his famous Italian eatery down on Kuta Beach. An instant hit from day one, Jamie’s Italian Kuta Beach is going stronger than ever, proving popular with pretty much everyone – from locals and expats to tourists both domestic and international. Expect hearty, healthy, homemade Italian grub from the bright and easy to navigate menu, like antipasti entrees and cured meat plank to artisan pizzas and of course, pastas. Completing the picture are a selection of carnivorous mains, super salads and a smattering of authentic Italian dolce. Aussie Head Chef Scott Solomon helms up the kitchen with a passion for flavours and freshness, and makes sure that all the boss’ recipes hit the tables exactly as they should. Rustic, homey and comfortable, there are plenty of places to sit, with exposed timber tables and eye-catching colour schemes that make for a super stylish dining experience. Since my last visit, the menu has had a few slight tweaks to include a few more vegetarian options, so with that in mind a few mates and I share out a few meat-free starters to get the ball rolling, including the Spinach and Ricotta Croquettes (85k++), the Tomato Bruschetta (74k++), the Truffle Flatbread (85k++) and the deliciously smoky Baked Mushrooms (90k++). Washing all that wonderfulness down is a round of Pineapple & Lemongrass Martinis (120k++), which get the nod of approval from all – hey, it is past midday after all. For our mains the order reads one wagyu beeffilled Ravioli Con Carne (155k++), an imported Aussie Herby Lamb Steak (225k++) - chargrilled on the bone with roasted peppers and pine nuts, and a Simple Baked Lasagne (160k++), all of which are bursting with the freshest flavours and absolutely bang on the money in terms of proper Italian home-cooking. We also indulge in the Porkie Pizza (165k++) split between us – the artisanal salami and smoked pancetta are particular highlights.

Somehow there’s still room for dessert, so out comes an Orange Polenta Cake (65k++), a Vin Santu Tiramisu (90k++), the Raspberry Rippled Pavlova (85k++) and the Amalfi Lemon Meringue Cheesecake (90k++) to really top us off in style. A class act from start to finish – as you’d expect from Mr. Oliver, Jamie’s Italian Kuta Beach is a must if you’re after real Italian in Bali. Dan Ashcroft

In Seminyak, Rumours is one of the go-to restaurants for a quality, value for money dinner and drinks. Serving great western dishes at a very reasonable price, their friendly staff and attentive service have been the key to their success over the years. In this edition of Today’s Special, we tried one of the best selling dishes on their menu: the Australian Sirloin Steak. This deliciously cooked steak is served with salad and sautéed capsicum & baby potato, with creamy black pepper sauce. The steak was cooked just right; we ordered ours rare, and it came out tender and juicy on the inside, and slightly caramalized on the outside. The creamy, with a hint of black pepper, sauce complimented the savoury taste of the steak. The sautéed capsicum & baby potato were nicely done, and the sour and crisply fresh salad with vinaigrette dressing a perfect accompaniment. It costs only Rp. 125.000, tax and service charge excluded, which means it not only tastes good but is good on your wallet too.

CD REVIEW

8/10 tru dat.

LONDON GRAMMAR

Truth is a Beautiful Thing In a grim month that has seen the UK capital knocked for six by a slew of terror attacks and one of the worst tower block fire disasters in memory, there’s been little to rejoice about coming out of London. If ever there was a voice that could at least bring some hope to the horror it would be London Grammar singer Hannah Reid’s heartfelt, exquisite soprano. Amidst the misery of recent events like Grenfell, there’s the feeling that Reid’s voice - and indeed the songs she’s singing – could somehow help make our cruel world just a little less terrible. “Here’s to the things you love/here’s to the best of us” she sings on ‘Hell To The Liars’– a classic LG blueprint of simmering slow-build piano chords, winding up at the end into euphoric strings and a defiant refrain that leave you breathless for more.

Behind the enthralling vocals, multiinstrumentalist Dot Rothman and guitarist Dan Major do a fine job of crafting a beautifully layered, rich soundscape of soft pianos, gentle synths and subdued percussion that is never in competition with the lyrics. The sparing arrangements give Reid plenty of space to shine, and shine she does – perhaps best exemplified on the album’s mesmerizing centerpiece ‘Bones of Ribbon’, and the haunting ‘Oh Woman Oh Man’. 2013’s much-hyped debut ‘If You Wait’ was that rare thing; an album that actually lived up to the furore with it’s post-Zero 7 trip-hop trappings and icy-cool veneer. While ‘Truth is a Beautiful Thing’ doesn’t really change the game plan, it is undoubtedly a sure-footed progression for the young trio. Dan Ashcroft

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS The Beat astrologer Manish Kumar Arora reads into the next two weeks. Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

Cancer ( 21 Dec – 22 July )

You radiate charisma and seduction all period, with weekends being a particularly auspicious time to woo potential suitors into your web. Work can be both productive and enjoyable. Moreover, this is an amazing time to think outside the box and envision your greater goals in life. Use a delicate touch and soft words. Favours may be done for you that can lead to impressive improvements; some are even unsolicited and may come as the result of power changes overhead. At your work place, you are in danger of taking out your frustrations on someone who doesn’t deserve the punishment. Favorable Dates : 4, 6, 10 Favorable Color : Green & Red

Agreements and partnerships are more personal, and obvious this period. You will be learning lessons regarding relationships, how you relate to others, what you want from others, what you need in a relationship, and what a healthy relationship means to you. Happiness and a desire to share your good fortune and joy with others is the theme now. You are feeling generous and expansive, and are inclined to give lavish gifts or buy something lovely for yourself that is costly or extravagant. A diet or budget is likely to go out the window right now. Favorable Dates : 30, 3, 8 Favorable Colors : Green & Yellow

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

A busy and productive period is likely once you are past the distractions or complications, especially with power people and coworkers. Finish whatever you start and keep goals and commitments reasonable as you are prone to promise away too much and take on too much. Over stress is to be avoided. Romance may be a bit of a sticky wicket. Take discussions calmly and do a lot of listening before talking. Things will not be as simple as they seem at first sight and may require reconsideration or subsequent adjustment. Favorable Dates: 30, 5, 12 Favorable Color : Blue & Grey

A busy and productive period is likely with unexpected good fortune of some kind likely. It could be good for resuming an older project though, and it is definitely appropriate for analysing the weak points of your career and remedying them, for reorganizing yourself or reconsidering objectives. Romance does very well and may bring all of it to your door step. You feel especially attractive or friendly, and the warmth you radiate is noticed and appreciated. Networking with friends may yield the best results with coworkers coming in next. Favorable Dates : 1, 5, 10 Favorable Colors : Blue & Red

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 Dec )

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

It is not exactly a good period for starting something new. You are recommended to choose consolidation, remedial work and reorganization. You feel like relaxing and enjoying the beautiful side of life rather than laboring or concentrating on difficult tasks. A significant development in a close relationship or strong feelings of attraction to someone you encounter, are very likely at this time. Personal goals being supported nicely by members are also likely, especially fitness, career and any improvement effort. You are more sensitive, impressionable, dreamy or idealistic at this time Favorable Dates : 1, 4, 10 Favorable Colors : Blue & White

You’ll receive compliments for your past efforts. You’ll have opportunities with sentimental potential. You can easily be caught in a trap, because the tendency towards pleasures will be big and because you have a major difficulty in saying no to temptations. If you’re in a solid relationship, it will be a wonderful period for harmony, communion and fun together. Extra work in your profession may be handed or dished out to you but may hold several opportunities within it, especially for those of you in the food, transportation, service, banking, investing and travel industries. Favorable Dates : 1, 9, 12 Favorable Colors : Yellow & White

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

This is an excellent time to take the initiative or to begin a project that you have been considering. Action is the theme for period but avoid doing anything impulsively. Emotional stability appears calm. New friends are likely this period, especially through networking, day time encounters, lunches and ‘friend-of-a-friend’ connections. Next level upgrades are indicated in committed relationships, with talks that bring you closer. Your aesthetic sense is strong now; you may want to make changes in your environment to take it more harmonious and pleasurable for you. Favorable Date : 2, 6.12 Favorable Color : Blue & Red

This period you will want to focus on any issues that are concerned with technical matters such as contracts and even deals made on a handshake. You will want to be sure of your responsibilities and what you are expected to do in order for you to have the best outcome in these matters. It is a good idea for you to not be totally trusting in matters where your judgment could be clouded by emotions. You need to balance emotions with common sense at this time or you could be taken advantage of, especially in a relationship. Favorable Dates : 2, 4, 11 Favorable Colors : Green & Grey

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

This is a dynamic and exciting period. Your vitality and courage are strong now and you are eager to meet challenges. You can accomplish a great deal of work, especially if it involves physical effort. Hard work, persevering effort, and an unusual degree of self-discipline are highlighted now. You can now muster the stamina and strength for the arduous labour that is required. Take advantage of any unusual offers or opportunities. This is a good time to brainstorm with others, share ideas, and come to a group consensus. Favorable Dates : 30, 4, 6 Favorable Colors : Yellow & White

You‘re all about not rocking the boat with anyone this period. Earlier in the period you would be in solitary work mode and you like it that way. You‘re sorting out the details, and getting excited about the potential for success, the way your life can change based on this new adventure. You‘re trying your best to regain your strength but it‘s not easy when you also have to survive in life. Relax, things are going to be okay and you will have the rewards you are working for at this time. Favorable Dates : 3, 11, 12 Favorable Colors : Blue & Red

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

You have support from the personal front, so your confidence is boosted and you feel empowered to keep climbing the mountain in life. By the end of the period and into the next you‘re learning the value of leaving your work baggage at work and leaving your home baggage at home, fluently moving from work mode to personal mode. You will be the centre of attention and you will have many people looking to you for advice and guidance as well. You will find great satisfaction in your current relationship and you will feel like celebrating it. Favorable Dates : 2, 8, 12 Favorable Colors : White & Purple

You will have great satisfaction in knowing that you’ve been on the right track when it comes to career and relationships. It’s a good time to change course or direction to continue with personal improvements by setting new goals to conquer. It’s also a good time to negotiate a raise with your boss or find something that will pay you what you are worth. Travel is big this period. It could be a road trip, or a trip across the country, but it’s designed to acquaint you with new surroundings and new possibilities. Favorable Dates : 2, 7, 12 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Purple

EXHIBITIONS ON NOW

Send your art exhibition info to art@beatmag.com

Now – June 30 Griya Santrian Gallery

Now – June 30 Tukang Kopi District

Griya Santrian Gallery presents ‘Vague Memories’, an exhibition by Ida Bagus Putu Purwa. This exhibition sees the artist showcase his dark-nuanced works, showing how he struggles with creative ideas that are stimulated largely from the objective reality of himself. He explains that the idea of his latest series starts from recordings of events that occur in his life, which have become an anxiety that stimulates him to work. It is translated through charcoal and paint which he has used for the last few years. This combination of both dry and wet media results in his distinctive visual characteristic which seems dark and gloomy. Griya Santrian Gallery, Griya Santrian, Jl. Danau Tamblingan 47, Sanur.

Seven exhibitors currently showcase their works at Tukang Kopi District in an exhibition titled ‘Rekam Jalan’. They chose the genre of street photography as they think that streets always offer interesting events and stories. Not many photo exhibitions with this genre are held in Bali; it is normally focused on fine art, culture, portrait and so on. Therefore, these seven exhibitors try to offer an exhibition that lifts daily events on the streets. Tukang Kopi District, Jl. Tukad Batanghari No. 66, Denpasar

Now – July 14 Artotel Sanur Artotel Sanur is back with their latest group exhibition titled ‘What’s Next’. A continuation of a group exhibition with the same title in Ubud, this exhibition is bound to present the essence of street art, featuring works by nine artists. This exhibition has also been an artistic platform where the artists are challenged to respond their own cultural backgrounds with their own styles and genres, infusing it with their urban contemporary elements. Artotel Sanur, Jl. Kusuma Sari No. 1, Sanur.

Now – July 15 Titian Art Space Titian Art Space is back with its latest exhibition, showcasing the works by young Balinese artist, Wayan Aris Sarmanta. Titled ‘Rebirth’, this exhibition marks the artist’s solo debut. Moreover, it also celebrates the newest chapter within the traditional techniques of the Batuan school, which last had a major shift in the 1930s. Here, the artist’s latest works unequivocally demonstrate the new path he has undertaken since his first major group exhibition in 2013 at the Museum Puri Lukisan. While maintaining traditional Batuan technique, he has also added elements of social and political change around him into his works. Titian Art Space, Jl. Bisma No. 88, UbudArtotel Sanur, Jl. Kusuma Sari No. 1, Sanur.

Now – August 26 CushCush Gallery CushCush Gallery currently hosts its latest exhibition titled ‘DenPasar 2017’. As the capital city of Bali, Denpasar is known as the centre of business district and seat of government. The etymology of the word ‘Denpasar’ is ‘North of Market’, suggesting the origin of the city that developed from the strong presence of the market. Therefore, ‘pasar’ (market) has been picked as the theme of this exhibition. For this exhibition, 17 artists and four creative art communities have been selected to observe, understand, relearn and represent the meaning of ‘pasar’ and Denpasar in today’s creatives’ diverse perspectives. CushCush Gallery, Jl Teuku Umar, Gg. Rajawali No. 1A, Denpasar.

ART

Abstract Empathies Now – July 10 The Oberoi Bali The Oberoi Bali now presents an exhibition by Syahrizal. Themed “Abstract Empathies”, the exhibition showcases the artist’s collection of abstract works which were created as he explored intuitively the musicality of forms and colors. The results are works that contain colors that are not perceptible as colors, lines that do not lead to any object or meaning, and surfaces that simply flow to the mind. | The Oberoi Bali, Jl. Kayu Aya, Seminyak

Purwa Rupa Now – July 15 ARMA Museum

Two Balinese artists, Aboetd and Wayan Dastra, are currently showcasing their works in exhibition titled ‘Purwa Rupa’. Held at ARMA Museum, this exhibition presents 20 works by the artists, marking an early milestone for them to continue creating with a better process. Furthermore, it also shows the artists’ progression where they find their artistic identities. | ARMA Museum, Jl. Pengosekan, Ubud

ART

Aboetd Kadek Rudiantara, or better known as Aboetd, is a selftaught Balinese artist who hails from the village of Mas in Ubud. It all started off as a ‘fad’, but he is now an active painter; all thanks to the power of social media which has helped him a lot on his journey.

How did it start? When I was a kid, I liked to doodle and create arty things. However, it was only half a year ago that I started painting seriously. It all started from paper. As a result, I took the pictures and put them on my social media. There were many responses coming, and it gave me more reasons to create better works. And honestly, the virtual world is indeed what makes me feel more enthusiastic about creating art. I’m self-taught, so I never learned to create art, even after I found my own style. Since then, I have become more active in creating art. There is no day without painting. What do you paint? Most of my works focus on women. I like to paint women as they are beautiful, and they also have a strong appeal. I love to paint monsters or giants. Sometimes, I love to depict the symbols of divinity. I also love to create paintings that are based on signatures. From the signature of my friends, I will respond to it with stripes, and that collection of signatures can then become a masterpiece.

What is your style? My painting style is a kind of decorative expressionism. It is a development of the traditional Balinese style which I respond to with my own style. And what about the coloring? There’s no special meanings in the colors I use. For me, those colors are part of decoration, and they enhance the beauty of my art. What are the characteristics of your art? My characteristics lie on the ornaments and decorations in my works. The Balinese touch looks thick, but it flows freely like water. They seem unbalanced, but they actually complement each other. www.thebeatbali.com

Location Almost all the appeal of Bali is within reach of Kuta Seaview Boutique Resort & Spa. Want to surf? Just cross the street and set your surfboard in the sand at the popular Kuta Beach. If you’re gunning to shop then just hop on over to their next-door neighbor, Beachwalk Shopping Mall, or head to Kuta Square shopping arcade and markets; and for a fun family day out just take your brood to Waterbom Park. Your tummy will never be left wanting either, since you’re near many restaurants and cafes (such as Hard Rock Café), meanwhile there’s no better venue to explore the nightlife than in Kuta—so dance away folks! Last but not least, Ngurah Rai International Airport is a mere 20-minutes-ride away. Look Kuta Seaview Boutique Resort & Spa has very contemporary Balinese architecture and is equipped with international standard room facilities. The traditional décor and lush tropical garden (complete with a mini rice paddy field) certainly accentuate the authentic Balinese look, and is in line with the resort’s concept to create a hidden world that is in tune with nature yet also luxurious, exotic and romantic. Atmosphere Exquisitely tropical thanks to its Balinese-styled interior and the verdant scenery that surrounds it. It’s very laid back and serene despite the

area it’s located in, and you might even catch up on your yoga practise! But, of course, for a bit of buzz just head down to Rosso Vivo Dine & Lounge for blast-from-the-past tunes or exciting sunset DJ sessions. Features The resort offers 84 rooms that will pamper you with gorgeous views, divided into the Deluxe Room, Lanai Deluxe Garden, Lanai Deluxe Facing the Sea, Premiere Deluxe Cottage, Family Room, and an additional 4 units of Garden Suites. Each room—all having their own balcony—are furnished with a SMART TV, IDD Telephone, Minibar, in-room safety deposit box, WI-FI, and much more. To dine, just head down to Kuta Seaview’s very own Rosso Vivo Dine & Lounge that serves the best Italian gastronomy and cocktails in the area accompanied by a rousing live band performance. Their surf boardshaped pool makes a great spot for unwinding while sipping caipirosca from their Poolside Bar, while the Royal Rama Spa, with its specialty color-therapy treatment, is perfect for a mind and body rejuvenating experience. Even better, on certain days you can join in some interesting classes such as how to prepare a Bali signature dish, sate lilit, or how to arrange the flowers for daily Balinese offering. ARC A nti - a g in g Beauty Clinics

A destination for your aesthetic needs. ARC Anti-aging Beauty Clinics Jl. Sunset Road No. 819, Kuta T. 754 645/750 982

LOOK Set on Sunset Road, ARC Anti-aging Beauty Clinics is certainly one of the best aesthetic destinations in the island. The interior is lavish, with a spacious lobby area leading through to a corridor that reveals a multitude of informal seating areas, private consultation rooms and treatment rooms. The whitedominated interior is kept simple yet elegant, with a grey rug creating a warm atmosphere. FEEL The Beat tried one of their popular offers, the SygmaLift — a high-performance non-surgical skin lifting treatment. This treatment uses an advance technology, aiming to effectively lift and reshape the face and body. Prior to the treatment, we were required to see the doctor who analyzed our face and body condition, as well as explaining to us what the treatment is all about. From this consultation, it was decided that we would do the ‘SygmaLift Cheek & Nasolabial’ (2,800k) which focused on our cheeks and nasolabial folds (laugh lines). Lying on the treatment bed, the treatment began with a face cleansing, followed by the application of cool gel which acted as conductor of the ultrasounds. The first procedure of the treatment was the High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) which aimed to reduce the fat and lift the muscle. That was then followed by the second procedure, the Low Level Laser

Therapy (LLLT) through Cold Laser technology, which stimulates collagen production and accelerates the recovery process. The treatment ended with the application of sunscreen on our face, as well as some final words from the doctor. What we loved about this treatment was that it was pain-free and relaxing, had no side effects, there was no need for any post-procedure medication, and, of course, the result which reshaped our cheek contours with tighter skin. INGREDIENTS SygmaLift is a gold standard for non-surgical face-lifting, utilizing dynamic High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), accompanied by Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) through Cold Laser technology to reshape your facial harmony by sculpting the areas you wish to be ‘fixed’. It is also effective for contouring your body by reducing fat and cellulite on the tummy, ‘love handles’ and thigh areas. MAGIC As the first of its kind in Bali, ARC Anti-aging Beauty Clinic offers comprehensive care for women and men. The service comes complete with state-of-the-art facilities which are designed to promote well-being from the inside out.
