While the weather has been rather miserable lately hopefully it’s already a lot better by the time this mag is published - things are about to pick up on the island. The Bali High Season is coming soon, and even earlier this year, with Ku De Ta and W Bali kicking it off with major events in July. W Bali and Woobar have brought their signature annual event forward a week and will be holding the SPF Saturday show with major acts Christoph and Osunlade on July 22 (not to mention Ruede Hagelstein this Friday night, July 14). Jenja holds their Anniversary on Saturday, July 29 with main guest Patrice Baumel and a cast of Jenja mainstays. Ku De Ta is breaking with tradition with their Bikini party this year holding it in July for the first time ever which also helps to get the High Season into top gear, on Sunday July 30. It would appear the high season now starts in July. In this edition we feature a story on the inaugural Pacha Bali Festival 2017 to be held at Anantara Seminyak in August (also look out on our social media pages for a contest to win tickets to the event) and a special on the return of SOLIDAZ to Bali, who are now well ensconced in the lux club venue, Bang Bang in Kuta. We also have more healthy options for the health brigade on the island and all the action from the last two week’s nightlife. Check inside and online thebeatbali.com for all the Bali event details over the next two weeks.

T

he world’s best-known club brand with the two cherries is not only famous for its Ibiza club but has also been successfully organising Pacha Festivals in Amsterdam, celebrating their 5th anniversary in 2016. They also recently hosted a spectacular first edition in Tokyo. The Pacha brand is rocking dancefloors all around the globe, dominating the look and sound of the international house scene with its own unique style and this August they are in our part of the world and right on the beach in Seminyak. On the 18th of August 2017, Pacha Festival will emerge for the first time on the island at the 5 star premium Anantara Seminyak Bali resort. On top of that, Pacha will be hosting their first festival in Bali during their 50th anniversary of the Pacha Brand. It’s a big year for them and a big high season for us. They are slated to bring their Ibiza vibe to the ‘Ibiza of Indonesia’ with an extraordinary party weekend with great entertainment, exclusive VIP events, and high quality food & beverages that will bring the

original and luxurious Pacha atmosphere to the island of the gods. The Beat had the opportunity to speak with Pacha Festival head honcho Hans Smit last week about the forthcoming super-festival and managed to find out a few more points about this major event. Bali and the island of Ibiza in the Mediterranean, the home of Pacha, have always been compared as world party centrals, and as he told The Beat, Hans is a true believer. “I personally think that Bali is sort of like the Ibiza of South East Asia. A lot of the people working for Pacha have been visiting the island regularly and everyone agrees on the similarities with Ibiza. The people are very nice, the climate is great, it has a wonderful nature and a very interesting nightlife. The vibe is amazing here and we have been searching for the right partner, location and occasion for quite a while to make an entry with the Pacha brand on the island. Thanks to our partner Maxima International Productions, we were finally

Pacha Festival Bali 2017 is coming soon! able to find the perfect location and creative organization and are now ready to bring some of the true Ibiza magic to Bali.” TB: Looking at the visuals promoting the show, it appears the whole Anantara Seminyak Resort is morphing into the stage of the festival – like a huge stage from Tomorrowland or something. Will you have lights and visuals coming for the upper floors of the resort? Hans: The beautiful Ananantara resort will be fully integrated into the stage design. There will be lots of lights and other visual elements coming from all parts of the building which will make it a spectacular stage like never seen before. I’m not going into details, because that would ruin the surprise effect, but I can assure you it will be unique! TB: What do you think of the line-up for the festival? It doesn’t appear to be solely EDM. What can we expect? Hans: The line-up is a reflection of what Pacha stands for. A broad variety in quality dance music without presenting one particular music

style. We will have the legend Roger Sanchez flying in from NYC to play an exclusive set when the sun goes down, Fedde Le Grand playing his worldwide hit records and Steve Angello closing the event like only he can. Next to this we have a proper amount of up and coming talents, local heroes and undiscovered gems to make the line-up complete. Well it sounds like a huge night and an absolutely huge weekend and week, for that matter, around Bali. Book your tickets early, they are now on sale through the website link below. Pacha Festival Bali 2017 is bringing you a very exclusive and memorable electronic dance music festival experience for this high season 2017, not to be missed! Tickets are available on www.pachafestivalbali. com. For VIP package inquiries, please send an email to vip@pachafestivalbali.com. SOLIDAZ Banging out the tunes at Bang Bang

SOLIDAZ is the resident band at Bang Bang, Sky Garden’s flash, live music club, right in the middle of the Kuta super-complex. These Kiwis have been serving up the top 40 hits for a long time and are now back in Bali after a 13 year hiatus. They know how to entertain the crowd with solid sounds and a great stage show and are doing it five nights a week at the classy Kuta venue. The Beat caught up with drummer, Kristen Hapi to find out what’s up with the band right now.

50

www.thebeatbali.com

FEATURE

TB: Give us a brief history of Solidaz? How did you get started? Kristen Solidaz: The band won a NZ TV talent contest and came up to Asia in 1997 playing their first gigs in Hard Rock Cafe Beijing and Shanghai. Since then the band has been on the road 19 years straight playing 5 star hotels around Asia and the Middle East. From the lineup that first came to Bali in 2000, four members are still present and after the last eight years in China, we are well pleased to be back in Indonesia. So any changes in the band for this gig? Yes, we have 26 year old Sinahi De Los Angeles, and the band has found not only an amazing singer, bass and flute player, but a seriously sexy kick-ass frontperson. This Venezuelan stunner brings a new, fresh vibe to SOLIDAZ, one that everyone seems to love. In that 19 years what changes have you seen in your side of the music business - namely being a cover band? For sure music continues to evolve, but the funny thing we have noticed is that a lot of songs that we used to play decades ago have come back. The other night we were asked to play some Shaggy by young kids. Wherever we go we learn the latest greatest current hits, but we find that people still like 80’s pop and rock classics too. How was Bali back in those early days? If you can remember... The party scene was so alive back then, or at least it seemed to be for me. Pre first Bali Bomb, we were out almost every night of the week, checking out

different bars and usually ending up in Double 6, with an occasional encore at Scandal! Woo-hoo! So what changed? Nothing, it’s still the same, but way much more of it. The Bali nightlife is still crazy if you want to be part of it. So who’s in the band now? Chris Toal - keyboards lead vocal, Mark Tamati - bass, lead vocal, Sinahi de Los Angeles - lead vocal, flute, bass guitar, Campbell Hapi - lead guitar, bass, keyboards, vocals, Kristen Hapi - drums, vocals. How about Bang Bang, what kind of crowd are you getting there? Mainly people that come in out of curiosity are the ones who like it and stay all night! We have a lot of people that do like the band and come every night while they are here in Bali on holidays. And for what reason do you think they stay? The band is sounding pretty awesome right now, and Sinahi’s vocals are really good, and she’s hot! (Boom!) Bang Bang is a sanctuary from the madness of the Dome. In our venue you can hear mainly R&B from the DJ, and one of the only international bands on the island. And they are great at what they do! You can catch SOLIDAZ live every Tuesday to Saturday from 11pm at Bang Bang, Sky Garden, Kuta.

irst inaugurated back in 2013, the space came to be thanks to the aspirations of four creative, restless souls who sought to share their knowledge of yoga and healing with the community. Sharing the same vision of serving the people, they created a center for wellness and self-empowerment. Located in between the ocean and the rice fields, you’ll find that Samadi offers a wide range of activities and workshops for your holistic lifestyle. Their yoga classes are held every day and have a duration of 75 or 90 minutes. If you are new to yoga, you might want to try the Yin, Ashtanga level 1 or the FlyHigh which is done with the help of a hammock. If you’re looking for something slow to help you stretch out those tight muscles, Gentle Hatha, Yin or Hatha Tantra would be for you. If what you’re looking for is something stronger that will get you sweating then Mysore, Ashtanga or Vinyasa would be the perfect choice. Samadi holds Ecstatic Awakening Dances on two Wednesdays each month and they also celebrate Full Moon and New Moon with Kirtan and Gong Meditation respectively. They provide meditation workshops as well as Life Coaching held every Friday at 2PM. After your yoga

on’t let the unassuming name fool you. My Warung is already a word-of mouth hit around Canggu, serving up top-notch steaks & cool cocktails. On the surface, My Warung could be mistaken for just another standard café that’s popped up out of the rice fields. What sets it apart though, is the attention to detail, fantastic quality of everything they serve, and also the superb value. My Warung embraces the concept of ‘Wabi Sabi’, the Japanese art of appreciating beauty in a naturally imperfect world. The result is a quirky, contemporary space for late breakfasts, brunches, lunches and dinner in a comfy bistro style eatery with an al-fresco patio area that spills onto the road. The ambience here is one of rustic hominess, all earthy tones, distressed wooden surface pre-owned furniture & eclectic artworks adorning the walls.

FOOD

The menu at My Warung is all about Western style comfort food with a few cheeky Indonesian twists like the pork or chicken satay & the ubiquitous Nasi Goreng. Top of the bill is the fantasic My Warung L’entrecote steaks (150k++), so after a warm up starter of a Chick Medewi and Healthy Goodies Salad (both 60k++) my friend and I tuck into the tender beef sliced on the boards with rustic fries & walnut green salad. Helping to wash it down are a couple of the My Warung classic cocktails, namely a Whisky Sour and a Mojito (both 100k++). To wrap things up, a slice of the Tiramisu goes down a treat. For the cocktail lovers, check out the two-forone Sangria promo between 5-7 pm, and for the late session, the bartender will rustle up a few favorite picks between 9-11 pm. CD REVIEW

9/10 bloody good.

ROYAL BLOOD

How Did We Get So Dark? Round two for Royal Blood and it’s business as usual for the Brighton-based duo. Namely an instantly listenable foot-stomping guitardriven din with exactly zero grams of fat to hang off its glam-metal bones. At the heart of the Royal Blood sound, Mike Kerr’s bass (restrung with guitar strings) and Ben Thatcher’s bombastic drums meld together in a white-knuckle blend of raw power that barely lets up for a second. Good job too because there’s nothing worse than an exciting debut ruined by artists deciding to ‘take things down a notch’ on the second outing. “Don’t Tell” is the closest thing there is to a ballad, but really it still clocks in at under four minutes and sounds like the kind of thing you might hear in a shady strip joint.

The ten songs whistle by in a breathless 35 minutes, Kerr’s cannon-fire drumming the perfect accompaniment to Thatcher’s machinegun riffs. How only two people can make such an unholy racket is mystifying, but somehow everything sounds like it’s been cranked up to eleven on all the dials. This approach is effective across the whole of How Did We Get So Dark?, but on the solid gold standouts, (“Light’s Out”, “She’s Creeping”, “Where Are You Now”) the pair’s no-nonsense riffery really takes off. Best of the bunch, “Hook, Line & Sinker” is set to be a moshpit staple for the band during this year’s crop of headline spots. Dan Ashcroft

CANCER ( 21 Dec – 22 July )

This period you may find yourself gaining plenty of support which is especially warming. You feel yourself capable of mastering anything you put your mind toward. Weigh up your priorities carefully, and take into consideration what you have learned in the past and you should be able to make a decision with confidence. Spirit is bringing a time of better understanding about the home and family dynamics. You know how to spread the good times. The key here is to be fair, and most importantly, have fun. Favorable Dates : 16, 21, 25 Favorable Colors : Red & Yellow

You are likely to be feeling stuck right now, and feel that there are insurmountable hurdles ahead of you which you can’t possibly get over. It is necessary to be strong and sort things out head on and personally. You might be in need of a spiritual vehicle to help you to be the best person you can be. You may need to seek out someone who can advise you, maybe just someone who is strong in their own belief. Focus more on what you are excellent at, and not on what you feel lets you down. Favorable Dates : 18, 20, 21 Favorable Colors : Purple & Green

TAURUS ( 20 April – 20 May )

LEO ( 23 July – 22 August )

Now is the time to recognise your own abilities and have total confidence in yourself, because even those who have doubted your abilities can now see what you are capable of. You also now need to believe those things about yourself, that other people can see in you and you should face the world with your chin held high. Spirit is encouraging a time of less worry and more productivity. There will be a lot of renewed energy, enthusiasm and creativity so make sure you make the most of this time. Favorable Dates : 15, 22, 24 Favorable Colors : Blue & Yellow

This is a generally favorable time for activities that help you to focus on your happiness goals rather than responsibilities. You’re more likely to want to withdraw into yourself and avoid too much activity. Things are set to improve for you on domestic front not only in the matter of a tangible improvement in your homelife, but also in terms of financial help ongoing from this. Your relationships, not just a romantic one, are taking you to places you have never been before, and you may be experiencing feelings you have not encountered previously. Favorable Dates : 17, 20, 26 Favorable Colors : Blue & Green

GEMINI ( 21 May – 20 Dec )

Favorable Dates : 14, 22, 23 Favorable Colors : Blue & Green

In this period, there can be restlessness, a tendency to misplace items, possible mis-judgment of time, and work challenges or confusion. You find yourself looking at the glass half empty instead of half full. It is a period of analysing and working out where your life is heading, and by using your intellect, rather than your emotions, it is a good time to get a grasp on what it is you require, and setting the intent to make changes for the better in respect of yourself. Favorable Dates : 16, 22, 25 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Green

LIBRA ( 23 September – 22 October )

CAPRICORN ( 22 December – 19 January )

There is a good ability to successfully combine logic and intuition, and to understand problems taking into account the human element. There is sensitivity to people’s issues now. Trust your gut instinct, and use your intuition to navigate forward. Keep your mind and heart open to embrace new possibilities, even though they might pose a worry to you on a financial level. It might be time for you to be honest with yourself and consider what it is you really need for your own happiness right now, as well as those around you. Favorable Dates : 16, 23, 25 Favorable Colors : Grey & Blue

You will have a stronger need for appreciation, shows of affection and warmth and excitement. This is a time for having some fun, being creative and childlike, and enjoying life. It’s also a good time for organizing and managing. A great time to take up new feel-good opportunities. Show your confidence and optimism and reap the rewards. This can be a good time to commit fully to something – especially health and healing matters. You will find life much better, and you might discover new way of dealing with things. Favorable Dates : 14, 22, 23 Favorable Colors : Blue & White

SCORPIO ( 23 October – 21 November )

AQUARIUS ( 20 January – 18 February )

It’s a strong time for boosting your practical skills, even if you are not entirely sure of where you are headed. If enthusiasm is up and down, aim to slow things down just a little so that you can better assess the situation realistically. Circumstances may be revealing the less flattering side of others and possibly of yourself through partnerships. Relations tend to be weighed down with seriousness. Reminiscing about the past is possible, or something from the past that was left unresolved reappears and demands your attention. Favorable Dates : 18, 20, 27 Favorable Colors : Red & Purple

Some feelings of disillusionment can come now as your dreams and ideals can be put to the test. You may be tougher than usual, and more inclined to follow mental or practical considerations than you are to listen to your intuition. There may be a realignment of material goals and spiritual ideals as you assess what is truly meaningful to you. There can be issues with personal freedom and expression which seem to counter closeness or intimacy. Wait for the tension to subside before taking action. Favorable Dates : , 14, 20, 23 Favorable Colors : Red & Yellow

SAGITTARIUS ( 22 November -21 December )

PISCES ( 19 February – 20 March )

This is time to devise strategy or plan to work towards long-term goals. Your resolve to improve your life, particularly to add more structure and discipline, is building, and seeing things clearly now can help this further. Aim to focus on what you know and can control and take things step by step. Someone may appear on the scene in terms of a romantic interest, or at least someone who might be able to help you move on from your past way of life. Favorable Dates : 14, 21, 23 Favorable Colors : Red & Yellow

You are more courageous, able to take the lead and in tune with your natural desires and instincts. It’s a good time to rethink what it is you truly do want. You’re in a good position to notice things about yourself, others, and situations in your life. Look for creative ways to express yourself rather than the usual or traditional routes. You could find that adding a little adventure into your life, possibly through a new interest or researching a new idea, can improve your enthusiasm many times over. Favorable Dates : 16, 20, 21 Favorable Colors : Red & Purple

ART

Wayan Dastra As the citizen of Ubud, Wayan Dastra was born and bred in a very artistic environment, and gifted with an artistic talent that keeps evolving as he grows up. He now actively participates in the Bali scene, sharing his insights on the social life of the Balinese through his artistic expressions. Give us a short introduction about yourself. I was born in Ubud, in the Lodtunduh. I started painting in junior high where I learned traditional painting. Then, I continued my education at the High School of Arts in Batubulan. I enrolled at the Institute of Arts in Denpasar, earning my bachelor’s in 2006. I have since actively participated in art activities. What sparked your interest in art? The environment around me. I live in a village which is also home to many great Balinese artists. My surroundings introduced me to art, and it affected my life greatly. Curiosity then led me to learn from more experienced figures in my neighborhood. It nurtured my interest, and it required me to keep learning.

How do you choose you subjects? The subjects I choose are usually inspired by the phenomena that are common among people around me. One example is in one of my works in which depicts a mother with many children. In the past, many children were considered a lot of luck, whereas now, many children are considered a burden to parents. Presently, to support a child alone requires a lot of costs, whereas in the past, having many children would be an economic advantage.

What themes do you usually work on? And what are your inspirations? Social themes about the traditions of the Balinese people, especially those in my neighborhood. When seeing the unseparated differences like the good and the bad, it triggers me to put it on canvas.

Lastly, how do you interpret the colors in your works? The interpretation of the color in each of my works is color as color. It contains no specific meaning. Color is only to shape the spaces and objects that I want to describe and to show the impressions that I want to convey. www.thebeatbali.com

SPA

SAILLA SPA A body pampering session perfect after a busy day in Kuta

LOOK Situated amongst the homey accommodation of the Grand Istana Rama Hotel, The Sailla Spa greets you with that signature Balinese hospitality and vibe, complemented with a wonderful frangipani smell in the air. The décor is unassuming but cozy, offering three grand couple rooms perfect to try with your significant other. Refresh yourself with a complimentary glass of fresh orange juice, and you’re all set for the massage! FEEL We tried the Pampering Sailla Package (IDR600k), and it’ll be a glorious 150 minutes of your time. The therapist will start with a foot bath then on to the bed for a bit of dry massage to warm up the body, including light stretching and kneading. A relaxing Balinese massage with aromatherapy oils takes up the first 60 minutes, followed by a facial using rose oil-based ingredients to cleanse and exfoliate. After a brief break to let the face mask work its wonders, then it is the body’s turn to get exfoliated with a cool-to-the-touch body scrub. The treatment, unfortunately, has to end but the final bubble and milk bath was a nice ending to the body-pampering session.

INGREDIENTS Sometimes a massage is as good as the aromatherapy oils it uses, and the Sailla Spa has them in spades. For the massage, you may pick between the green tea, chocolate or strawberry-scented oils—and all are great choices! Plus they also have the same options for their scented body scrubs, with the one addition of the coconut scrub. Meanwhile, the rose essential oil-based mixtures used for the facial his known for its antimicrobial and antiaging properties. MAGIC It is, simply put, a rejuvenating head-to-toe treatment. It’s totally relaxing and energizing at the same time thanks to the deft skill of the therapist, and the skin nourishing treatments in this pampering session leave you with soft and radiant skin.

adang Padang is the sacred jewel of Balinese surfing, a rare gem where the next RIP CURL CUP 2017 will take place. Invited athletes and surf fans from around the world gathered last Sunday for the opening ceremony at Padang Padang, to bless the event with good waves, a safe competition and officially start the waiting period for the surf contest. The ceremony started off with a traditional Balinese Kecak Dance and went on to the prayer of the Balinese Gods for permission to hold the contest at this sacred spot. The standing only crowd gathered to watch the presentation and meet and greet several of the 16 invited surfers, including defending champion Mega Semadhi (IND). The

The event is on when it’s on, meaning that all 16 surfers – eight Indonesians and eight international surfers – are now oncall to be at Padang Padang within 24 hours’ notice if and when the event directors decide the waves are good enough. A series of Indian Ocean swells are forecasted to reach Bali in the coming weeks. According to Surfline, the first significant swell will reach on July 15-16, and a possible better swell is currently on the charts for the 20-22. Contest directors are monitoring these swells closely so stay tuned to www.ripcurl.asia for the latest event status.
