After some pretty miserable weather to start this year’s high season it looks like at last we’re in for some beautiful blue skies and great times. This year’s high season is well spaced out over the period since W Retreat’s SPF and Ku De Ta’s Bikini Party were held in mid/late July and it doesn’t look like slowing down until well into September. This weekend watch out for Potato Head’s Sunny Side Up with a raft of major international and local acts doing their thing on Friday and Saturday. It’s one of their biggest shows of the year. Jazz is in the limelight in Ubud this weekend too with major acts playing the three nights of the Ubud Village Jazz Festival at ARMA Museum. It’s a beautiful venue to see some great music. The clubs also have major acts on in their main rooms. The Hari Merdeka or Independence Day holiday is midweek, next week on August 17, which means Bali will be packed to the rim, and with that comes the biggest parties of the season. Moksa Club in Kuta has their official opening on August 17. Pacha Festival Bali will be held on the beach starting at 3pm on Friday August 18 at Anantara Seminyak and down the road at Alila Seminyak, the Arturro Summer Party will be open to the public at 10pm. Saturday August 19 sees Ku De Ta fire up again with their annual White Party. There is so much more on over the next two weeks too. Just check inside or online thebeatbali.com for all the details.

FRIDAY AUGUST 11 JENJA

Weekenders

Timo Maas is an extraordinary German DJ and producer and he's returning to Jenja on August 11. His music has been heard world wide for the past 30 years - from a residency at the monumental Circoloco at DC-10 Ibiza for 15 years to the tours around Europe and the rest of the planet. His high level of dedication to the underground world of music has been well loved, especially through his incredible productions. His international discovery started with his remix of 'Doom Nights' by Azzido Da Bass. Soon enough, he was supported by the UK garage scene which launched his name onto the desks of artists like Madonna, Depeche Mode, Muse and Fatboy Slim. He has produced three albums since 2001, his first one being 'Loud', later came 'Pictures' and more recently in 2013 he released 'Lifer'. All these albums encompass a sense of depth and emotion mixed with delicate, deep baselines and humongous beats. His recently acclaimed tracks that you MUST check to get the feel for him are the following; Cuba and Porcelain EP on his own Rocket & Ponies label, his Silver Lines EP

26

on Rejected Records and his remix of Claptones 'Puppet Theatre'. Obviously there is much more but we would be stuck here all day. We wouldn't be giving him enough gratification if we didn't mention his mad skills on the decks and what he has achieved behind them. From Glastonbury to Ants Ibiza, regular sets at venues like Warung Beach club, right through to his intimate shows in the bunkers around the world. We can't wait for this one. Genre: techno

SAT AUGUST 19 KUDETA

White Party

Ku De Ta's White Party is back this summer with London's Basement Jaxx on Saturday, August 19! The White Party has been synonymous with Bali's high season for a very long time. It's a time where everyone on the island lets go of their worries and joins to dance in unison with some of the best electronic artists around. This year is no exception, with London's Basement Jaxx making their way for THEIR VERY FIRST SET on the island as well as Dutch house masters Roog and Erick E. Basement Jaxx has been rocking stages since '94 and run a righteous agenda with gigs all over paired with unique songwriting and writhing rhythms. Their tracks range from both the electro-punk ferocity of 'Where's Your Head At' and 'Get Me Off' to EPs on their Atlantic Jaxx label and the eclectic clash of characters in their last album 'Kish Kash' Basement Jaxx records have always structured their tracks with a sense of organized chaos, voices, sounds and ideas ping-ponging wildly around the mix. Kish Kash is simultaneously the most extreme and most cohesive example of this mentality. They are so far ahead of the pack they've forgotten what the pack looks like. Trip The Light Fantastic indeed. The Ku DE Ta White Party is not to be missed, especially this year! Genre: UK garage, house, electronic

DJ's Factor B and Mark James from Aus will be in charge of the tunes, expect some old school, uplifting tunes that will take you back to the golden days of trance! Over the last year or so Factor B has risen to become one of the most electrifying DJs in the trance scene with outgoing support from Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk and many more. Aswell as his remix of 'The Thrillseekers' which got the attention of superstars like Aly & Fila and Armin, and ended up getting signed for an exclusive release on Armada Music. Teaming up on the night will be one of Australia's biggest movers and shakers, with a huge background of gigs around the world, Mark James! He has been synonymous

with dance music in Australia since it began, starting off in the 80s until now, Mark has been pushing and promoting for all of his adult life. His tunes have been heard on all types of record labels, from his track Eternal by Eternal with Carl Cox in 1991 to his most recent stints with Perfecto records. The man has a humongous list of tracks well worth checking out. Check the interview with Mark James inside. Get ready for this, its going to be a big day and night out! Genre: trance, techno

Mark James back to Bali Aussie DJ, producer and promoter, Mark James is coming back with a new series of events after a few years away from the island and this first show out of the blocks should be a belter. Gatecrasher: The Return of the Lion is on at Double Six Rooftop on Wednesday, August 23. The Beat had a chat with Mark to find out where he’s been and what we can expect at the gig. So Mark, we hear you’re making a return to the Island of the Gods. Tell us more and what’s been happening with yourself? Since the last time I visited Bali some years ago with the Famous parties at the old Double Six Club I’ve had a few career and life changes. After departing from my company Future Music in 2013 I took some well-deserved time off. I’ve since dived back into one of my first loves; writing and producing music. I’ve also now started a new touring company in Australia, Universal Touring Events (UTE) which will be operated in the same way Future did touring quality artists and staging major events. Tells us a little bit about what we can expect with Gatecrasher which is coming to Double Six Rooftop? Gatecrasher is such an iconic clubbing brand so we’ve tried to keep a mixture of old and new DJs to represent this, with the likes of legendary techno DJ, Mauro Picotto, Gatecrashers music director Scott Bond, the amazing psy-trance DJ from Polland, Indecent Noise, along with Australia’s fasting rising star on the world stage, Factor B. Gatecrasher prides itself on quality music and production so expect something very special on the amazing roof top of Double Six Hotel.

64

www.thebeatbali.com

You will also be playing a Gatecrasher preparty at Mirror and the Gatecrasher afterparty at the new Moksa Club, tell us what we can expect? I haven’t changed my outlook to DJing over the years. I’m a firm believer of playing quality music mixed across a few different styles, I would say my music is bouncy techno with a party twist. I’ll be joined at the pre-party by DJ Innerlight, a big local favourite and at the afterparty I’ll be spinning with Gatcrasher’s Factor B. Expect two great parties to complement the main show, Gatecrasher. So what can we expect in the near future from Mark James. I’m trying to finish an album at present which is nearly done, I’m just adding the final touches to it. With the company I’m working on a lot of tours and festivals for 2018 and I hope some will make it to Bali. I’m also currently just about to launch a Global Underground Twenty Tour with two amazing DJs, so stay tuned for that one hitting your shores very soon.

Erik Sondhy He’s off to Russia next week, and in a second chat with Jazz pianist Erik Sondhy, we ask about his early influences in music and how he got started. It would seem his grandmother had quite a part in that, but let’s start from the beginning....

66

www.thebeatbali.com

FEATURE Erik. I’m from Mengwi, Bali. Music came to me from my grandmother. She sang in the church choir and she asked me to learn piano or guitar so I could accompany her while she practiced singing at home. My parents divorced when I was young so I lived with my grandmother since I was five years old. I also played music in the church until I finished high school. TB. So your grandmother had a great influence on your music career? My grandmother had a great voice and she was really into God. She was a Christian and a great believer. She was very active in the church and really loved music. She sang gospel music in the church but really loved classical and jazz. She even sang in front of our first president Soekarno one time. She’s the only one in the family who really supported me with my musical ambitions and she had a long life until 90 years old, passing away in 2010. So what happened after your time with the choir, when did you start playing piano and performing? And why piano? First I learnt guitar and then piano... I just felt that the piano was my instrument.

So what happened after that? I moved to Bali full time and have basically stayed until now. I was 23 years old then. I joined Jiwa Band with Rio Sidik and the boys and we played around the traps. How was the jazz scene in Bali when you came back in 1999? It was pretty good. When I arrived back the jazz scene in Bali began getting better and better but there weren’t many jazz musicians back then. Where did you play? Jazz Bar and Grill Sanur and Jazz Cafe Ubud. Later Ryoshi came along which lifted the game. Russian tourists seem to be big fans of jazz in Bali. They’ve been coming in great numbers since around six years ago. Have they had much influence on the jazz scene? They really love jazz. They love all good music. Are there any playing music here? There are some, but not many.

When was your first performance on stage? When I was in high school. I played and sang for the school graduation show when I was 15 years old.

You are off to play in Russia soon, how did that come about? Some guests from Russia saw me play at Ryoshi and they invited me there to see their country and play some shows. They seemed to like my style of jazz and playing.

So when did you begin to become a professional musician? When I was 18 years old. I played the keyboards and sang covers alone at a hotel called Prawita Cottage Kuta.

Where are you going to play? Moscow and St Petersburg. It’s an eight day week tour and there are two shows orgainised.

When and how did you get into playing jazz professionally? In Bandung, later. I was back at my grandmother’s place and 21 years old. A pianist in Bandung asked me to replace her playing jazz in a hotel there. What was the early defining moment? The moment you decided music was your future? When I entered a jazz band competition in Jakarta and I won first price. That was in 1999 and was the moment I began calling myself a jazz pianist.

What are you expecting from the visit? Hopefully they will love me more and I can make them all happy. I’m hoping in the future, I can do more and more shows there and have more and more fans from Russia. When do you go? 24 August until 1st September. You can catch Erik Sondhy paying regularly at Ryoshi Monday/Tuesdays, Saturday at El Kabron, Wednesday at Joglo Candidasa and Thursdays at The Beat Cafe. www.thebeatbali.com

the flavour, and we’re soon salivating for the mains, which consists of the Fettucine al Nero di Seppia (squid ink pasta with mixed seafood), and the Quattro Formaggi pizza – piled high with gorgonzola, bechamel, parmesan, cheddar, mozzarella, bocconcini & caramelised onions.

After a sweep of the Beachwalk mall, a friend and I popped down last week to give the lunch menu a go and perhaps tuck into a couple of early afternoon cocktails for good measure. We found a spot to perch at the front and got stuck into a couple of the superrefreshing Mango Margaritas (99k++) while watching the world go by. I don’t find myself in Kuta that often these days, but seated overlooking the beach with a fruity cocktail in hand we both agreed that it’s still a pretty awesome spot to be. We kick off by sharing out a portion of the Trio Bruschetta, which includes smoked salmon & cream cheese, grilled mushrooms & parmesan, and of course the standard diced tomato & basil. A light pesto dressing adds to

To round off a superb lunch, we split a plate of the Italian classic sweet treat Cannoli – chocolate truffle cream filled rolls of pastry with tangy raspberries on the side. Considering the quality and location, the lunch deal is excellent value for money, but if the evening session is more your thing, make sure you’re there by 7.30pm every day for a dose of live tunes and good vibes. The Beat Café Calamari Fritti & Croquetas

TODAY’s SPECIALS

Anytime you are in Petitenget, let’s not go past The Beat Café. Besides serving their Japanese Yakitori and Yakitori-inspired burgers, the menu also has some tasty items which are perfect as appetizers or afternoon snacks. First on the list is the Calamari Fritti (60k). Tender calamari, battered lightly and perfectly fried - it is also sprinkled with nori seaweed confetti which makes a nice addition and enhances its flavor. Next, there are the Croquetas (50k) which have delicate textures, with a creamy béchamel sauce and good amount of ham on the inside and golden crust on the outside. What we love about these Spanish tidbits is their molten center that bursts with flavor as you bite into it, sure to leave you wanting for more. To treat your taste buds even more, these dishes are also served with savory yakitori sauce, adding a nice extra kick to them.

KOPI POT ULUWATU SUNSET Apart from their signature best-seller cocktail, the breezy Arak Madu, the Lone Palm Bar of Kopi Pot in Legian also has another winning drink: the tall glass of tropical delight, Uluwatu Sunset (IDR95k++). The cocktail (almost as old as the beloved establishment itself) is a mixture of Bacardi, Triple Sec, Galiano, orange juice, and grenadine syrup, and the end result leans more on refreshingly sweet, with a slight tart edge, but thankfully without being overtly saccharine.

CD REVIEW

8/10 nu-disco inferno

PETE HERBERT & MARTIN DENEV Made in the Shade Bringing another dose of that synth-heavy nudisco sound that he’s so well known for, DJ par excellance Pete Herbert has joined forces with Bali based musician Martin Denev and finally got round to recording a follow up album right here on the Island of the Gods. Made in The Shade is a purely Bali product, inspired by the tropical days and heated nights of our beautiful little party island, so be prepared for a smooth string of tracks that sound as good slouched on the sofa at home as they do while dancing in the sunshine or under disco lights. Both talented producers firmly leave their mark on the LP, which naturally encapsulates all that’s good about their work - think colourful synthesizers, loved-up pianos, dreamy chords,

rich analogue synth-bass, Italo-disco style arpeggio lines, disco cowbells and an saucereyed Balearic mindset - while delivering a string of superb, sun-fired tracks. The highlights come thick and fast, from the classic Italo-house surge of ‘Washed Up’ and T-Coy-does-nu-disco cheeriness of ‘Night Boat’, to the soul-flecked tingle of Robert Owens hook-up ‘Pass Me By’ and groovy, acid-flecked deepness of proto-house shuffler ‘Time’. The new album is out now on UK-based label Nang Records, and available on vinyl and DL on the major platforms, so get it while it’s hot and let this little gem soundtrack ya high season. Now – August 26 CushCush Gallery CushCush Gallery is currently hosting its latest exhibition titled ‘DenPasar 2017’. As the capital city of Bali, Denpasar is known as the centre of business and seat of government. The etymology of the word ‘Denpasar’ is ‘North of Market’, suggesting the origin of the city that developed from the strong presence of the market. Therefore, ‘pasar’ (market) has been picked as the theme of this exhibition. For this exhibition, 17 artists and four creative art communities have been selected to observe, understand, relearn and represent the meaning of ‘pasar’ and Denpasar in today’s creatives’ diverse perspectives. ART

Citra Sasmita Citra Sasmita is a young Balinese artist who hails from Tabanan. She is a gifted, talented woman who uses her art not merely to find an aesthetic purpose, but also to deliver her protest of patriarchal culture. What she has been creating is a collection of bold, provocative works, frequently portraying women and questioning their position in society. How did you get into the art world? I first got into it when I had the opportunity to create the illustrations for a book of short stories, as well as Bali Post’s weekly short stories in 2012. I was fond of visual art since childhood. I’m not an art school graduate, but physics which are related to exact science and that, in fact, has helped me in formulating ideas before I put it into a medium. Can you explain your artistic process to us? It’s not simply about how to display the visuals, but also how to provide something that is relevant and contextual to social problems today, so that it can be pondered and interpreted by the broader public. That’s where art has a multi-dimensional function, capable of covering the matters of space and time to be responded to by all senses. It’s not only about finishing two-dimensional images which can be seen only by the eyes. You choose women as the subjects in most of your works. What is the background, and what do you want to convey through this depiction? All this time, I’ve been intensely discussing the identity, stigma and sexuality which I represent through female bodies. I realize

that as a woman, there are many things that have been buried in the area of domestication, both in terms of politics and history, as well as understanding people’s habits and their identity formation which are conditioned by the patriarchal system. It’s important for me to explore and understand these, and creating art is a very pleasant way to communicate the problems, as well as to analyze women’s issues. And how do you embrace women through your art? The success of a piece for me is the critique and curiosity, so that’s when the discussions and dialectics about these ideas happen. The female-themed works that I create often come from cases of violence, as well as the analysis in the social space that not all women are aware of. Through these works, I, as a facilitator, seek to build awareness and empathy for other women.

SPA

BODY TEMPLE SPA An energizing facial for men, combined with a “heart of the ocean” ritual

LOOK For a luxurious skin rejuvenating experience, head down to Finns Recreation Club where the Body Temple Spa awaits. After a day chilling with the family at the club or getting a bit of a tan at nearby Berawa Beach, the Body Temple Spa is a swell place to unwind with its welldesigned head-to-toe treatments. FEEL The Beat tried the 60-minutes Energize Man Facial (IDR800k) that uses the premium Thalgo skincare line from France with marine active ingredients. The treatment starts with a relaxing massage with circular hand movements covering the face, neck, arms, and chest area. At one point, at the start of the treatment, the therapist recreated the sound of the ocean with his hand movements over our face wrap to further soothe our mind and body. Thalgo’s Reviving Marine Mist cooling face spray marks the beginning of the facial, followed by a succession of deep cleansing and exfoliation to remove those pesky dead skin cells, ending with a double layered face mask plus a skin-rejuvenating serum. Even their hot towel (used to clean and to open up our pores prior to a new session of cleansing) is infused with Thalgo’s Essence Aquatique.

96

www.thebeatbali.com

INGREDIENTS Other than the aforementioned products, the facial uses other Thalgo skin nourishing and revitalizing products such as Softness Exfoliator, Marine Massage Cream, Pure Freshness Tonic Lotion, Intensive Hydrating Cream, Foaming Marine Cleanser, Algue Bleu Vitale Extract, Ultra Hydra Marine Mask, and Collage Eye Concentrate. MAGIC The Energize Man Facial certainly lives up to its namesake—the treatment caters to men’s stress prone skin and combines energizing marine active ingredients with relaxing massage movements to diffuse them directly to the heart of the skin (they call this the Eveil a la Mer massage). Other than revealing clearer and healthier skin, afterwards we also felt super relaxed and, yes, energized!
