GET SET FOR ROCK N’ RUN 2017

A race that you won’t want to miss is the 17th chapter of Hard Rock Hotel Bali’s Rock N’ Run that will be held on Sunday, October 22. It’ll be a fun race as there will also be a live band performance down at Kuta Beach and door prize giveaways. Registration for the 5km charity run will be open until October 19 and entry includes a T-shirt, meals, and a chance to win lucky draw gifts. So Ian, tell me about the Red Ruby, what’s it all about? Red Ruby is an upscale nightclub with a focus on the most modern trends in music, namely house, techno, hip hop. We have 10 VIP tables, state of the art sound and lighting to suit each event and create an atmosphere that is both fun and comfortable. We have hosted some of the best local parties such as the Independence Day collective faceoff between Panorasuna from Jakarta vs PNNY from Bali, as well as some really cool international festival launch parties such as Pacha Festival! What have you been doing personally before now? I worked in marketing for about 10 years in the corporate world, ranging from merchandising for sporting goods stores to the medical field. I also own an IT company out of Laguna Beach, CA. In college I did a lot of promoting for different night clubs but really this is my first real night club marketing director gig. I took a couple of years off and traveled, snowboarding is a passion of mine so I spent the past couple of years here on the island for six months and snowboarding the rest of the time. But now I have moved full time to Bali as a partner and marketing director in this venture. Will you be bringing international DJs to town or sticking to a more local content? Right now, in the club, we have both expat and local DJs weekly but we also have some big international acts for September. We have Eli Escobar, Uner, and a really cool Jakarta Indonesian live act called Sunmantra. In October we have Klangkuester, James What, Trust Me, and in November we have some really cool special guests that we’d really like to remain under wraps for now...

And how about the live music side, what do you have in store? We have some amazing local talent, Bar Dogs, Made Mawut, and Abe Rivaba, these guys are all great musicians in their own right, from classic rock to blues and soul! When is the live music on? What time and where? Tuesday to Thursday from 8-11pm on The Terrace out the front. Dinner and music essentially. DJs are on the Terrace Friday and Saturday from 9-1am. So what kind of special drink promos do you have at Red Ruby? On the terrace we have Happy Hours”daily from 5-8pm - buy one get one free on drinks, as well as Sunday all day! I decide to take the tasting menu for a test drive over lunchtime, so together with a good mate we grab a spot inside the spacious a/c area and get stuck in. First out comes the Butterfish Carpaccio, with bursts of passion

fruit and wasabi mayo, dressed with a local style sambal matah. True to its name, the fish is butter soft and goes perfectly with the sweet/spicy flavours for a sensational opener. The Beef Sate arrives next, super tender and flavoursome, thanks to the fact it’s smoked with apple wood and served with edible ‘charcoal’ (sweet potato) & lemongrass foam. So far, so amazing, but the third dish of Lemongrass Lobster Bisque has to be my favourite; the rich broth complimented beautifully by the crispy prawn spring roll and a pinch of Avruga caviar. We pause for a drink break (a Bloody Spice Martini, 160k++), before ploughing on straight into the Baked Scallops Gratin with Balinese ‘betutu’ taste. Last of the savouries comes the Angus Tenderloin Rendang – served with a flourish by the chef himself

directly onto the central area of our table. Crispy flakes of Sumatran ‘dendeng balado’ and a scattering of crispy rice complete the dish, before we end on a sweet note with the Lemongrass & Ginger Pannacotta with Coconut Kafir Ice Cream. A feast for all the senses that fuses local and Western tastes for a wonderful tasting experience, the Chef’s Tasting Menu at Arwana is an absolute winner and well worth a look. Dan Ashcroft

THE WAR ON DRUGS

Deeper Understanding Philly has always been something of a hotbed of musical talent, but over the last few years the game has been raised thanks to 80s retro rock quintet The War on Drugs. Fronted by enigmatic, flannel shirt-clad vocalist Adam Granduciel and dead-set on revisiting the joys of synth-driven 80’s rock, these guys look like they’ve just walked off the set of a Jonathan Demme movie. Like their 2014 Breakthrough hit Lost in the Dream, the genius of LP number four lies in the way it serves up such a homage to a pretty narrow genre of music history and makes it sound so immersive – so new. Specifically on songs like “Nothing to Find”, where the hook is a near identical facsimile of Dire Straits’ “Walk of Life” or the Neil Young-patented low-E twang on “You Don’t Have to Go”, but also in the grander scheme of things like the use of moog organs, booming drums and Granduciel’s earnest, weathered vocals.

9/10 drivetime dreaming.

It’s Springsteen, Bruce Hornsby, Dylan and to some extant, Phil Collins all wrapped into one joyous daydream of multi-textured beauty, where synths sparkle and slide guitars heavy with reverb bind together some truly lovely songwriting (“Holding On”, “In Chains”). There are maybe a few less giddy thrills compared to Lost in the Dream – noone does a well-timed ‘WOOO!’ better – but that doesn’t detract at all from A Deeper Understanding’s romantic notions of lost highways and late night dive bars. As with its predecessor, this is the kind of record that makes you want to jump in a rusty Cadillac and disappear into the great wide open with Patricia Arquette riding shotgun. Dan Ashcroft

Oka Astawa Liking painting since he was a little boy has been the motivation for Oka Astawa to chase his dreams in the art scene, despite not being born into a family with an art background. As he grew up, natural issues changed his perspective on the function of art, leading him to pick this topic to help people be more aware of their surroundings. The theme of your works is nature. What motivates you to present this theme? Nature is not just about the environment, but is also about culture. Nature is just like a house with its potentials and problems. Therefore, I try to show the effects of the clash of these two through my works. The changing of nature has switched my perspective as an art practitioner. Art is no longer an object of scientific study or conventional theory, but also as a way to spread awareness about the environment around us, as well as to change social phenomena and cultural realities that impact people. If they can be described, what are the characteristics of your works? What can be seen from my work is a form of abstraction. Splashes and melts, which are common artistic characteristics that we normally see in the works of other abstract painters, are also dominant in my works. However, these splashes and melts have been constructed to become various figures in my works, with a variety of gestures that sometimes imply passion, agitation and other emotional conditions. These figures

are anonymous; they could be anyone and anything. They could just be themselves, they could be someone else, they could be us and they could even be a representation of nature itself. Besides the paintings, your art is also presented on an unconventional medium such as t-shirts. Why do you choose shirts, and how do you combine elements of art with this medium? For me, t-shirts are a medium close to the clothing trend, and that means itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s popular among young people too. This is one of my attempts to bring my work to a wider audience; in this case the youngsters. What I show here is a visual language which I believe is an effort to expand the possibilities of art appreciation, as well as the spread of environmental issues I shared. The interesting part is, those who buy these t-shirts will also get seedlings for them to plant. This is a pattern of communication that I do to strengthen the environment-related message I want to convey to my patrons.
