Mount Agung has been on everyone’s minds lately and it would seem it’s going to stay that way until Bali’s greatest volcano decides to calm down a bit. Our hearts go out to those from Karangasem who had to evacuate their homes and villages, now over two weeks ago. It is hard to imagine being in their shoes at this time and we hope that that they will be able to go home soon. It’s easy in retrospect to say that maybe the authorities acted too quickly evacuating all these people so early, but if, as they say, the volcano can still blow its top at any time, what choice did they really have? We have heard there have been hotel cancelations for the next month, which is understandable, but we have also heard that many people are still coming and they’re on their way as normal. So let’s all hope Agung keeps his lid on for another 50 years or more and we can get back to normal as quickly as possible. If not, we’ll all just have to deal with it the best we can, as this is a natural phenomenon and has as much right to happen as you and I have being here. So get on with your life folks, Bali continues being a great place to be. Meanwhile there are some awesome shows going on around the traps during the next two weeks. There were also some major events going on all over town recently. Check inside these pages or get online to thebeatbali.com to find out more. Have a great two week period.

FOOD SCOOP RUMOURS ON THE MOVE You may have not heard this one yet, but it’s true…. One of Bali’s most loved restaurants and winner of last year’s best resto award at The Beat Awards, Rumours has just opened a restaurant in Singapore. It’s called Rumours Bar and Grill, located in Holland Village (a street enclave of fun restaurants and bohemian stores near Orchard Road). One highlight is that they are brewing their own Rumours beer – however we aren’t sure that will be making it back to Bali. The restaurant is smaller than its Bali cousin but spills out onto the street. The menu is based on the Bali fare so you know where to feel at home next time you are in Singgas. Everything you hear is true at Rumours!
NEW BREAKFAST SPECIALS AT THE BEAT CAFE The Beat Cafe is now open every day from 7am till 1am every night (later on the weekends). To kick off the morning shift, try the special breakfast packages from a fresh juice, Lazumba coffee and pastry from Rp40k or mix that with a delicious, freshly made pancake or the complete package of juice, coffee, pastry, eggs, bacon and toast for a mere Rp 80k. That can’t be beat for price nor taste. A late night Yakitori burger can also fix your afterhours appetite. The Cafe closes at 2am on weekend nights.

FOOD SCOOP WAH REPUBLIC INTRODUCES BRUNCH Sunday Brunch is one of the many favorite activities on the island, but there aren’t many options in Denpasar, or is there? Introduce yourself to Wah Republics Sunday Brunch at Level 21 Mall, an all-youcan-eat session of straight out feasting for a full 100 minutes. Pick anything you want from the a la carte menu as well as free flow water and ice tea, and desserts for a mere 190k. In respect to the area and the large population of Muslims they have taken out all pork items from the menu but have added dishes like the Souper Chicken Rice Bowl, Sirloin Steaks, Pulled Lamb Banh Mi and Chicken Tikka Masala to name a few. You can find their best-selling dishes like the WahWah Wagyu Burger or the Bahn Mia la Wahrung in the Denpasar location. So sit down, feast away and celebrate your Sunday with money in your pocket and a full stomach!
MASTER CHEF DINNER AT WESTIN NUSA DUA Food lovers on the island are in for a treat as four master chefs from the popular T.V. show are joining forces to curate a dining experience you won’t forget. The limited seating event takes place on Saturday, October 7 and will include a four course menu with a selection of equally delicious wines. The chefs include former Masterchef Australia 2017 contestant Ben Bullock and popular runnerup of 2017 Ben Ungermann, Masterchef Indonesia and Hell’s Kitchen contestant Chef Juna and Westins very own Italian Chef Alessandro Molini. All of them have taken it upon themselves to make one particular dish for your enjoyment. The dinner will be prepared in front of guests and accompanied by an interactive commentary during the plating process. This prestigious event costs 790k++ with a special discount of 15% off for all Maybank cardholders. Dress up and enjoy the elegant pre-dinner cocktail as well as live entertainment and a lucky draw! www.thebeatbali.com

Prego @ The Westin Bali Kicking off a new series of Beat Sunday Brunch reviews is Westin’s Prego restaurant. The popular Prego Family Brunch is now better than ever with a new name and fresh concept. There are few things better in life than Sundays and brunches, so when the two are combined you’re definitely onto a winner. With a heap of places around the island to indulge in this most gluttonous of weekend rituals, competition is certainly fierce, but the Prego Sunday Brunch at the Westin sets itself apart by being fully geared up for all the family. For the last three years they’ve been putting the fun back into weekend dining, and now they’re changing things up to make family time even better. A fun program of activities is laid out to keep the little ones entertained for hours, meaning the grown ups get to kick back and enjoy the extensive spread and free flow drinks in peace. The outdoor garden play area is quite literally a wonderland for kids, where they can try their hand at all manner of fun shenanigans, all the while safely supervised by the experienced team from Westin Family kids club. Prego mascot Pipo the Squirrel also pops in for photo opportunities while the resident roaming magician wows the tables with a hatful of amazing tricks. Instead of just a regular ‘all you can eat’ buffet, Prego offers a semi a la carte menu,

where selected dishes are prepared to order at an open-plan kitchen. Think antipasti, salads, roasted meats, pastas, pizzas and regional specialties meaning all tastes are catered for. Italian Chef de Cuisine Alessandro Molini is on hand every Sunday to oversee authenticity, while the dedicated dessert station ensures kids (big and small) get a huge choice of sweet treats including cakes, crepes, homemade gelato and even cotton candy. A trifling IDR 360k ++ per person for the brunch includes a welcome glass of Prosecco, with free flow soft drinks and signature iced teas, or for an extra IDR 200k++ you can enjoy free flow beers, wines and selected cocktails. The best part is that kids under 12 eat for free (up to two per family), and if that isn’t enough, there’s complimentary access to the resort’s premium swimming pool, so don’t forget your bathers! What Do You Recommend, DEAN FISHER - The Spicery Deli & Bistro
Chef?
According to Chef Dean Fisher, enjoying The Spicery Deli & Bistro’s menu is like exploring the flavors of the world, and the dish he recommends this edition is no exception. It is their Shanghai Babi (99k), a fusion of savory oriental flavors which are finger-licking good. As the name implies, the highlight of the dish lies in its slow-cooked pork belly strips, with tender, moist and succulent meat, plus the crispy crackling that tastes just fantastic. These strips sit on a bed of egg fried rice, complete with carrots and peas which add a delicious texture. Adding the greens, this dish is then served with sautÊed bok choy and garnished with fresh coriander, whereas the Chinese-inspired ginger soy sauce on the side also makes a great dip for the pork strips, perfect for those who need some tangy sweetness. Try the succulent Shanghai Babi at the new Spicery Deli & Bistro in Seminyak Square today!

ROLLFAST: THE DEATHRATTLE TRIP By Rio Tantomo
T
ighten your saddle. Guzzle gasoline. Sniff some octane and rub those wrists - nothing can stop the heart of this young man speeding, burning and going deep into the darkness. Not even his own fears. The boundaries of oppressive illusion and drunkenness are the norm, or like Rollfast bassist, Aan Triandana would say, “Paranoid.” For him, the group’s influences can not be separated from these five points; (1) Society. “The feeling of joy, sadness, begrudging spite, irritation comes from our social environment.” (2) Oneself. “Look more deep into your inner self because I want to explore myself.” (3) Problems. “If there are no problems we can’t think critically,” one of the band’s guitarists, Bayu Krisna drops in. And again from Bayu’s tongue, (4) Family. “They will always be our loyal supporters.” And he sprays again, the last (5), Joy of music. “Not always from the 70s. I’m not such a fanatic of Black Sabbath, sometimes I just wanna hear Duran Duran.” Rollfast formed in 2011 when the members were around 17-18 years old. It was their unruly era as angsty, delinquent teenage boys as a band. Aan and the mysterious singer Agha Praditya were from the minority or considered outsiders at high school. But that’s not a bad thing, of course, because from there the vigor of their passion was born. Rollfast began from that passion. All their songs are built on adrenaline. For example; ‘Multiple Desert’ is a roaring track as deadly as the blasting sounds of Armada Racun’s exhausting chain gang troupe along Jalan Ngurah

Rai in ’71, or a heavy-weighted composition called ‘Baby 69’ which was baptized by Blue Cheer’s Vincebtus Eruptum, or a drum solo attack that would have Bonham/Baker standing back in awe from the Timor-afro beatmaker Ayrton Maurits Willem that intros their spacey excursion ‘Nudetilt’, or the most dangerous of all ‘Destination: Death’, an electric, bantamweight heavy rock championship song about a desolate soul. After two raw demos, two years ago in 2015 Rollfast finally release their full debut album Lanes Oil, Dream Is Pry via Trill/Cult Records owned by Natha Raharja. An album that obviously Bali’s sidestream rock scene needed, because the Bali scene is getting old. And anyway, it is the time for the punk rock,
FEATURE
death metal and rockabilly majority of the island’s music scene to get their alternative sounds in gear. As an album, it’s not to be underestimated. Let it bleed. Let it blurt, let’s call them the Long Riff Machine that would put pencil in your lead and burn your leather jacket. Rollfast has The Door’s mixed in, with Zeppelin’s DNA already planted on their own. And of course there is so much free jamming too, yet distorted by the noise-polluted psychedelia the double guitars make. The other guitarist’s name is Gungwah Brahmantia. But the question is, how can you feel so bleak in a beautiful and joyful land like Bali? Aan
answers, “There are so many dark sides about Bali that many people don’t know. Among them is the fact that we are still not ready to deal with the globalization wave of today. We accept it all without thinking.” In 2014 Rollfast toured four cities in Japan. And now they are still locking themselves away busily brewing new material for their sophomore album. They concede that it will be more original than the first. That means it will be more formidable. “And purple,” Bayu says. The establishment of his band career is just like a trip from rock & roll freedom to the tough life of spirituality, which means . . . ‘buy the ticket – take the ride’, turn it up to maximum volume and do whatever that you want to do: high voltage all the way. www.thebeatbali.com

CD REVIEW
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE Villains
Look up ‘Joshua Michael Homme’ in the great rock’n’roll dictionary*, and you’d be likely to find the description; ‘world’s most prolific music maker’. While others are out there dropping in and out of rehab, collaborating with Mark Ronson, or, god forbid, selling out and making a Christmas album, the coolest front man since Elvis effortlessly churns out some of the most palatable hard rock tunes for everyone - including people who don’t like hard rock tunes. As it turns out, Brit super-producer Ronson is on board for QOTSA’s 7th long player (hey two outta three ain’t bad), and in all fairness, his Midas touch pop sensibilities actually give a groovy playfulness to Homme’s sinister American antihero persona. As a result, Villains feels sharp and focused, delivering a clutch of razor sharp tunes that showcase all the best facets of his songwriting; groovy, creepy and earsplitting yet with a more universal appeal last seen on 2002’s memorable Songs For The Deaf.
7/10 Hard rock antiheroes
Ex Mars Volta cohort Jon Theodore is on drum detail for the lion’s share of the record (a formidable stand-in for Foo Fighting Dave Grohl), providing the backbone for Homme to build his trademark muscular riffs and subtly sinister vocals around – best demonstrated on the barnstorming curtain-raiser “Feet Don’t Fail Me” and burlesque “Un-Reborn Again”. The funky keyboard hooks of “Fortress”, and the retro rock of “Head Like A Haunted House” remind us of the late 90s QOTSA sound, while “The Evil Has Landed” takes 70’s hit “American Woman” riffery as its starting point and turns things inside out to glorious effect. The whole thing exudes confidence – the kind that comes with over two decades of the band’s kingpin rarely putting a foot wrong. Such is the case here – Villains is many things - but most of all it’s just a really great rock’n’roll record. Dan Ashcroft (*not an actual thing)

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS The Beat astrologer Manish Kumar Arora reads into the next two weeks. ARIES ( 21 March – 19 April )
CANCER ( 21 June – 22 July )
This is a time of long-range planning that will bring you benefits down the road. Anything that requires focus and commitment will benefit. Your efforts now are very constructive and you are not inclined to want to leave any loose ends untied. You are likely to derive much satisfaction from taking care of practical concerns in your life. You’ll be looking for concrete results, even in conceptual activities such as study and creativity. Try not to be too starry-eyed about romance or you could be setting yourself up for disappointment. Favorable Dates : 10, 11, 19 Favorable Colors : Red & Blue
Career ups and downs are likely this period. Work is more creative than usual. Finances are stable and steady and you are finding it natural to spend wisely and to invest more in your home and nest. You are bound to experience your fair share of fun, romance and good times. Creative projects are likely to fare well and could possibly even bring some type of recognition or reward. You are restless with routines and tend to answer to your own internal rhythm rather than paying attention to society’s rhythms. Favorable Dates : 12, 17, 18 Favorable Colors : Blue & White
TAURUS ( 20 April – 20 May )
LEO ( 23 July – 22 August )
Your professional life will be fulfilled by an aesthetic or creative dimension. This period will encourage imagination, artistic expression, beauty and harmony. The wish for freedom, adventure and new experiences could begin to show up in this period. You want to play your cards very well so that you have the control of your relationship. However, the need to show your feelings tends to break through the shield behind which you’re trying to hide your emotions. The demands of your larger goals in life may have been eclipsing your pleasure-seeking activities. Favorable Dates : 9, 11, 18 Favorable Colors : Red & Yellow
You may find great joy and reward in your creative projects and hobbies and could discover a new hobby or talent you never knew you had. Pleasure-seeking activities, recreation and amusement are increased. You are far less inhibited when it comes to expressing yourself creatively and you are a lot more fun to be around. Your emotional sensitiveness will be higher and your need for tenderness and affection would be without limits. It depends on your trustworthiness if you’ll get what you’re expecting from your romantic partner. Favorable Dates : 9, 15, 18 Favorable Colors : Red & Green
GEMINI ( 21 May – 20 June )
VIRGO ( 23 August – 22 September )
A spirit of altruism and generosity, making connections with others from a different background, widening your mind through unusual or different experiences, expanded faith and a feeling that anything is possible if you set your sights high enough are all themes this period. Financially, you’ll have the opportunity to re-equilibrate your budget, but that means not wasting money. Love sort of combines with friendship. A friend might play the role of the mediator in a sentimental relationship or a friendship might turn into a love affair. Favorable Dates : 12, 14, 16 Favorable Colors : Red & White
You’ll be very enterprising, efficient and fast in reacting when in crisis. You’ll have enough energy to solve the problems on the agenda and to catch up on the unsolved issue.Love and romance may enter your life or are enhanced with good humor and warmth and social engagements abound. Your wishes will be very intense and will demand immediate fulfilment, but in spite of this haste, you won’t lose your head. You’ll manage to be moderate, to control your emotions and actions, at least regarding important decisions. Favorable Dates : 8, 13, 14 Favorable Colors : Red & Purple

LIBRA ( 23 September – 22 October )
CAPRICORN ( 22 December – 19 January )
You are feeling quite free from responsibilities making it easier for you to let your hair down and have a good time. In general, your faith in romantic relationships increases this period. Some of you are becoming more expressive when it comes to romantic notions, love and also children. Some of you may find romance on the job. Balanced attention between your public and personal lives is what you need to focus on. You may also take an interest in alternative health methods. You would benefit greatly from yoga or other mind-body therapies now. Favorable Dates : 10, 12, 19 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Blue
Progressive, part-time, or unconventional tasks hold the most appeal to you. Investments in stocks and other speculative matters could earn nice profits, although care should be exercised with any dealings that tie you to other people and others’ money. The availability for affairs, flirts and love will be quite high. Drama in romance can be lovely, but too much of it will only leave you yearning and perhaps even heartbroken. The challenge is to find a healthy balance to improve your home life while at the same time tending to one’s career needs. Favorable Dates : 9, 14, 18 Favorable Colors : Blue & Yellow
SCORPIO ( 23 October – 21 November )
AQUARIUS ( 20 January – 18 February )
You’ll care a great deal about intellectual and spiritual matching and your greatest happiness would be to travel or to discover the world along with the person you love. You’ll be highly sensitive, sentimentally speaking. You’ll daydream about the ideal relationship, but you’ll remain in the world of dreams, or your relationship will undergo some constraints or you’ll have a disappointment. If you work in the right domain, it’s just perfect. If not, you might apply these notions to your environment and relationships with your colleagues. Favorable Dates : 7, 14, 16 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Red
There could be a tendency to be a little on the gullible side. You could be believing what you want to believe rather than what is. In this period, family responsibilities, changing attitudes toward domestic life and family and possibly issues with control and dependency will surface. For singles, meeting a special person is highly likely, although it is unlikely to lead to a longterm relationship or coupling. And if you have an older relationship, it’s now time to try something new or to go for an unusual adventure together. Favorable Dates : 11, 12, 17 Favorable Colors : Blue & White
SAGITTARIUS ( 22 November -21 December )
PISCES ( 19 February – 20 March )
You are markedly introspective at this time, perhaps isolating yourself from worldly activities and acquaintances in some manner. Work that is limiting or lifeless really drags you down and you tend to approach tasks with erratic or haphazard energy. Those with artistic or athletic talent can be especially prolific and prosperous at this time. It would be wise to find work that offers you not only variety and stimulation, but also the chance to invent. Health issues, generally of a psychosomatic nature, may come to the fore. Favorable Dates : 7, 10, 16 Favorable Colors : Blue & Green
You may have many vague fears and anxieties that act to undermine your confidence during the course of this period. Contemplation of the meaning of your existence, your accomplishments, and your ‘failures’ may figure. Work that is limiting or lifeless will really drag you down, and you will tend to approach tasks with erratic or haphazard energy. Health issues, generally of a psychosomatic nature, may come to the fore. It’s time you adopted another vision on love - more independent, more open-minded, more play and experiment-oriented. Favorable Dates : 11, 16, 18 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Green

ART
Nyoman Sani In the world of art, she is one of the not-so-many women who have reached widespread acclaim. She is everything about a woman, unceasingly empowering other women through her art. Not stopping at one style, she is currently having her latest exhibition at Bali Buda Sanur, in which she explores coffee as the new medium of her art.
What is your art all about? My art covers women. I am interested in their lifestyle, their characteristics and how they solve the problems in their daily routines and careers. Other aspects like their gestures and fashion also make exciting ideas to be laid on canvas.
In your current exhibition, you use coffee as the medium for your painting. What is interesting from this medium? Although the pigmentation of coffee is different, it feels great to work with this natural medium. What’s more, coffee is very easy to be applied on drawing paper.
How did you first get the idea of creating these female figures? The idea sparked when I was doing my final art school project. The students were asked to make 12 original works. I was a bit confused of what I should make, but at the same time, I was reading a book about an urban life titled Midnight in Jakarta. That’s how the idea came out. I started painting the women and their lifestyle which weren’t too much explored in Bali at that time. This project was done in 2000.
How does coffee effect the final outcome of your art, especially in your portrayals of women? The portrayals of female characters in these works are actually still the same; not so much different from those that use other media. What’s different is the taste and smell of coffee that somehow gives a different feeling to the outcome.
What is the main characteristic of your art? The head cutting. What I want to convey here is that people are not perfect, including women. We are lacking many things, and how I portray it is through the depiction of their heads. There will always be the face and the hair, but if you look through it, you can sometimes spot that either their nose or ears are missing. With this vagueness, I believe my objects still look good and pretty when they are actually imperfect.
Will you continue using coffee as your art medium? Yes, I will continue exploring it. It’s really fun to discover new things with coffee. Part of the exhibition proceeds will be donated to Rumah Sehat Madani, a nonprofit community birthing and medical clinic in Denpasar, as well as Karangasem residents who are affected by Mount Agung eruption.

SPA
THE SPA AT SEGARA A traditionally-inspired spa destination to consider in Sanur area.
Mask (250k) from their Body Mask Sensation section. As well as having a delightful aroma, the mask also worked wonders for our body as its anti-oxidants helped detoxify our skin. After 20 minutes of application, we were allowed to shower. Our session ended with a relaxing time with a cup of warm ginger tea and biscuits before heading home.
LOOK Nestled in the lush gardens of the Segara Village Sanur, The Spa at Segara is a small and cozy hideaway that offers rejuvenating experiences. The simple spa is fenced with huge glass windows that let the natural light in, with its locally inspired interior showcasing shades of green that add a sense of serenity. This spa has two single rooms and a couple’s room, plus three treatment chairs which are used for foot reflexology, manicures and pedicures. FEEL Having revamped their menu recently, the spa now has more offers to choose from. From their Massage Experience section, we tried their 60-minute Balinese Massage (300k) which was a nice take on the traditional. Our treatment kicked off with the mandatory foot ritual that relaxed and cleansed our feet with a warm water and salt scrub, getting us ready for the massage. In line with traditional techniques, the massage started from the back of our body, starting from the foot, legs, back and to our hands. The massage used a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure and reflexology, combined with the aromatherapy that helped stimulate the flow of blood in our body. The same movements were then applied on the front parts of our body, ending with a massage on our head and scalp that let us feel totally refreshed. Our spa experience continued with the second treatment which was the Green Tea
INGREDIENTS For the massage, the spa offers three kinds of aromatherapy; frangipani, coconut and green tea. Each provides a pleasant aroma to help the mind relax during the treatment. MAGIC The Spa at Segara will welcome you openhandedly to experience the tropical pleasure of Balinese treasures, especially if you are in and around the Sanur area. What to love from this spa is its pleasant ambience, combining the friendly, smiling staff, nice views, cool sea breezes and soothing tunes that accompany you throughout your spa experience. Last but not least, their newly-revamped menu that has something for every one of your needs; and there’s enough there to keep bringing you back for more.

GIZMOS Do you have trouble sleeping? The Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed could be a game changer for your slumber. They promise one thing: “when you go to sleep, the bed goes to work”, and it does that in four different ways. Self-adjusting comfort, automatic snore detection and adjustment, foot warming and temperature control and a futuristic alarm feature. Getting to sleep is so easy, as it is proven that having warm feet creates a cozy feeling, helping you fall asleep more quickly. As you sleep, the bed will respond to your movements and adjust pressure on the memory foam mattress. If you or your partner snore, it can alleviate this by inclining your side of the bed. The bed also tracks your moments when you are in the lightest stage of sleep, waking you up smoothly at your desired time, so that when you wake up you wake without any grogginess. Gather data about your sleep and tweak anything through their inbuilt app. The future is now! Get a queen size for $3,299 or a king for $4,599. www.sleepnumber.com/360.
SLEEP NUMBER 360 SMART BED
Welcome to the almighty eye that is Hugo! A HUBBLE HUGO ANGER-MANAGEMENT ROBOT 360 degree camera that can tell what mood you are in, assess the situation and act to better it. Activated by motion sensors and sound, all you have to do is place it in a corner of a room and when you are around, it will read the expressions on your face and tell if you are happy, sad, angry or content. It works by analyzing the number of preselected spots of your face to determine the relation they have to one another. For example, you can set it up in a child’s room and Hugo can determine if the baby looks unhappy and send a message to the parent, or even turn on soothing music. Do you remember Sauron’s all-seeing eye? Well this is the friendly version of that, other features include detecting temperature, noise, far-field microphones and Wi-Fi, and it can also be used as a speaker. Emotional intelligence is the next step for smart home devices but it’s a funny feeling thinking that the next time you feel sad, you’ll have something there that will order you an ice cream. Get it for $299. www. earlybirdgadgets.com Let’s face it, we have all misplaced or lost keys, wallets and phones around the house or out and about. That day ends now, with TrackR.
