hil Stoodley has been playing his music around Bali for the last few years. You may have seen him in beach clubs, hotels, bars, or even the beat cafe. He released a new song and video last week, which is called This is Home and we thought weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d catch up with him live on Facebook and find out what the song is all about and more. This interview was a groundbreaking first for us and probably anywhere!

Releases new track and goes viral.. This is Home 1st question. What influenced your new song Phil Stoodley? It sounds pretty country. Love my Johnny Cash and I seem to organically be going down the Folk/Country/Blues style road with my writing at the moment. So I’ll keep cruising in this direction for a bit I think. It also sounds a bit Paul Kelly-esk. Who was one of my Aussie faves. So what’s the song about? Thanks I’ll take that! After missing my sleeper train from Goa to Delhi in India, I had to jump on an insanely overcrowded midnight run to get back to my destination. 48 hours of hard travel! I thought it had some Bali connotations. Or is that just the video? Yes its a very ‘Bali’ music video. Even though the song is predominantly about India, there is a little bit of Bali woven into the song. It’s a great song and video. Is it all from you (I know how much you love those loop machines) or are others involved ? Some of the recording was done in my home studio and the rest at Seminyak Pro Studio (Bali). Yes I do a lot of live looping when I play gigs. But not really on this song. I was lucky enough to have Zio and Denny from Dialog Dini Hari play on the track. Did an amazing job! The track was mixed in London. Yes it sounds like a top production indeed. How many tracks have you recorded before and how does this one compare to those? My last album I recorded everything in my home studio back in New Zealand. Then sent it away to be mixed. This time around the bulk of the recording was done at Seminyak Pro. They have some really nice gear there. Recorded the piano track there with Bob Nicksic (owner of Taco Beach Grill, Seminyak). He put a nice sparkle on the track.

I wasn’t aware Bob was so handy on keyboards. Now where did you learn how to ride a hipster bike like that and the gecko? Was that a spontaneous moment in Rachel Love’s garden or planned? Yup Bob used to be a pretty big time music producer in the US back in the day. I love his old school feel. I was actually gonna use Athron’s bike but it broke down on the day. Luckily my directors mate lent me his! All my older brothers had bikes growing up, so I dabbled a bit. Ha ha that gecko was overdubbed at my request. Shhhh don’t tell anyone! So what does a recording artist expect releasing a track nowadays and where is home now for you? Expectations... hmmm, I try not to get attached to any. I just pull the pin and hope for the best! Home has been Bali for the past couple of years. Good luck with the new track Phil. It’s good enough to go all the way. FOOD nicely at the center of the table and we both agreed this was something we could share though I seemed to eat the whole bowl myself. I loved the taste of the chicken wings they served next, the crunchiness of fried chicken base and the right amount of spiciness made it so good. The Beef Burger was beautifully served with French fries and barbecue sauce. A perfectly made patty and juicy as can be was something we both agreed on our first bite, we were sold! A slice of beet root revealed nicely amongst layers of fresh lettuce, tomato, caramelized onion, bacon and the fabulous flavored patty smothered in melted cheddar cheese - all crammed into sweet buns. Awesome! We must say that Syariat (Ari) Widyanto, the head chef, who also previously worked as the executive Chef at one of the oldest Golf clubs in Indonesia - Dago Golf and Country club, successfully surprised us. We also managed to discover the secret behind this awesome burger from the creator himself. Ari, who also worked as Chef de Partie at Jamie’s Italian shared his secret to making the perfect flavored patty. This lies in the dry aging method - where beef cuts were kept in a temperature controlled room for an average three days ( depends on types of beef ) to allow enzymes naturally present in the meat to break

down the muscle tissue, resulting in improved texture and flavor. Well it worked, as we’ve managed to stuff in the last bite without much of an effort and that tells a lot about the quality. After all that has been cleared, a tray of what I thought was magnum ice creams that turned out to be brownies, arrived to the table. These brownie popsicles served with vanilla sauce were a perfect sweet finish to our meals. Play Bar is quite spacious with a capacity for up to 500 guests, equipped with two bars and a live music stage to make sure the party is always on. They hosted 300 guests wearing different costumes at their Halloween party of mainly local visitors. Sol house is situated on Jalan Sriwijaya, only a walking distance to Legian beach. Opened in February this year, Sol House Bali which is part of Melia Hotels International has managed to present itself with many qualities in Bali’s competitive hospitality industry and is ready to rise high among its existing competitors. Who Built The Moon? The Gallagher brothers are never short of a sound bite or two, and in the weeks following Liam’s first solo release “As You Were”, pressure has been mounting for a comment or two from big bro. “I’m not going to learn anything. He doesn’t write his own songs, so it means nothing to me,” quipped Noel recently in an interview with Q Magazine. Ouch. It’s fair enough though really, given that Liam torments him mercilessly on Twitter, referring to our kid as “having a head like a potato” and calling out his tearful benefit gig for the Manchester terror attacks “a PR stunt”. So much for brotherly love eh? “I’m trying to soar like an Eagle and I’m being asked to comment on the ramblings of a common pigeon” was Noel’s response, shortly before dropping a far more effective comeback than any biting comment: his third studio LP with the High Flying Birds, “Who Built The Moon.” Where Liam’s “As You Were” largely mines the sound and attitude of Oasis, Noel has gone off on a proper tangent with “WBTM”. “Yeah yeah heard it all before” I can hear you muttering – rightly so too, but along with veteran Northern Irish Producer David Holmes, he’s produced something that’s about as far away from the

lad rock of Oasis as you can get. Well, if your second name is Gallagher at any rate. What has emerged from the pair’s sessions in Belfast and London is his most reinvigorating work in years – owing more to those mid 90s collaborations with the Chemical Brothers than anything recorded with his old band. It’s not always perfect; the electro sparkle of “It’s A Beautiful World” sounds like he’s singing with no teeth on the chorus, while yawn-fest “If Love is the Law” fails to bring anything new to the party at all. BUT. When things do all click its a beautiful thing to hear, especially on rollicking lead single “Holy Mountain” – a track that is sure to divide fans right down the middle with its tin pipe whistle and big band sax parping away. “That was the intention” explains Noel. “Half [the fans] are saying ‘This is f&*king s&*t. This can’t be the guy who wrote Live Forever,’ and the other half are saying, ‘This is f&*king amazing,’ and that’s not a place I’ve ever been”. Wayan Budiarta Born in Batuan, Wayan Budiarta is a young artist whose art has been inspired by the traditional Batuan painting style. Having strong roots in his hometown’s style, his works still illustrate many stories about religion and Balinese life, with detailed features and fine lines, which are often combined with modern iconography. Meanwhile, the narrations for his paintings do not always follow traditional storylines, having been reinterpreted creatively to voice his thoughts. How did you become an artist? It was just a hobby at first. When I was a kid, I really loved to doodle. Then, my surroundings, as my father and grandfather were also Batuan painters. It was not until I was 9 years old that I was introduced to traditional painting techniques and elements by my father, from the Balinese ornamental motifs, to the Batuan painting style itself. However, my father didn’t direct me to be a painter. He taught me, at least the basics of Balinese traditional pinting in general, so that I would know the culture and traditions we Balinese have. Why do you choose to keep painting in a traditional way? I didn’t choose. I let it be, and I enjoy it. It also applies to my works as it doesn’t really follow the traditional way of painting. I don’t want to position my works as

either traditional or modern. It’s up to the audiences to judge it. What matters is that my works begin from a thick tradition. Technically, these works still go through the processes of painting in Batuan style, starting from ngortenan (sketches), nyawi (giving outlines on sketches), ngucek (giving gradations), manyunin/sigar mangsi (giving layers of gradations), to coloring. So, your art does maintain the traditional style, but also allows a modern touch in it? I try to be honest on each of my works. I try to describe what I’m experiencing right now. Instead of wiping out the past, I let it be a lesson. After all from what I know, the Batuan style we know today was a breakthrough of the young people in the early 30s, something new at that time.
