We are now fast approaching the festive season 2017. It’s anyone’s guess how it will turn out this year (in regard to tourist numbers), but with luck on our side, we can look forward to a busy period without many disruptions. And BTW, if you do have disruptions just think for a moment the amount of disruptions you could have anywhere in the entire planet on any given day. Just take a deep breath and relax, it will all work out fine. The mountain is a long way from the Kuta/Seminyak zone, and even Canggu. The mountain is a beautiful part of our lives and has as much right to do its thing as we do. So the show goes on and this year’s Saga Festival at GWK on Dec 28 and 29 is set to bring some of the biggest names of fun, pumping EDM sounds to the island. Axwell Ingrosso, DJ Snake, KSHMR, FKJ, GARMIANI, SEEB, will be lining up over the two day event at one of the most spectacular venues in Bali or even the world. There are loads of other events on too with standouts like Sky Garden’s NYE show with one of Indonesia’s favorite Dutch DJs, Dash Berlin gracing the Sky Dome stage and our cover this edition. Also Finns has jumped up to the plate with a couple of huge events including Shiba San (who we have an interview with in this edition) and Flight Facilities and Claptone on NYE. lowly but surely, Zat Kimia (Indonesian for Chemical Substance) has finally found the momentum needed to push their sound in the Indonesian music scene, and especially in Bali. For the first time since they were formed through the hands of Ian Stevenson and Mark Liepmann as a duo seven years ago. Ian is the singer and the guitarist, while Mark is a German – Bogor offspring drummer from West Java who decided to quit from the band a long time ago. That was the embryo, and it wasn’t until many years later that Ian executed some of his old raw material with Mark, then continuing Zat Kimia as his stalled personal ambition.

Afterwards he recruited the rest of his collaborators to complete the band. Recording some songs for Candu Baru (New Addiction), Zat Kimia’s debut album was released in the middle of 2017 year via Trill/Cult Records, a local Bali record label who’ve been profesionally polished by Natha Raharja. Ian and also bassist-synth player Edi Pande, lead guitarist Bimo Haryputra and as well as drummer Norbertus Rizki pan out good quality modern alt-rock tracks which are heavily influenced by 90’s popular idols, from Radiohead to Stone Temple Pilots and also all the various MTV Alternative Nation compilation’s artist.

Ian remembers those early years with a touch of desperation. He said, “I had a serious health problem, when I couldn’t do anything, just take a rest. And I’m thinking the only medicine for my illness is to keep playing and create music.” He felt that time was chasing him, and one of his biggest regrets in this life would be to meet death before he can finish something he already started. There he found his strength in life; in this case Zat Kimia, and any doubts were defeated.

“Feromon” is one of them; a mid-tempo rock composition that became the top-seeded track for Candu Baru; A Radiohead Kid A-like synth intro and the singer’s introverted soul about poetical sexual urge. Zat Kimia has their own character in this domestic scene. Their music is not earmarked for those inclined toward misanthropic and reckless grunge behaviour, but instead is somewhat sensitive - a kind of tranquility as if you are brooding yourself by

staring at the sky in from frenetic Bali island, like the song “Dalam Diam” (In Silence) an ode to the great feast day of Nyepi. “I feel so very small as a human when the hustle and bustle of life in Bali stops, just only for one day,” said Ian who wrote that song and almost every lyric on the album. But that doesn’t mean they can’t play hard. “Candu Baru” (New Addiction) is a full distortion anxiety plot about worshiping the internet galaxy that receives an insulting word ‘Sialan!’ (Dammit) from Ian. There’s also “Ennui” the only English song in the album that we can say is pretty antagonistic for a band who were born from some disquiet melancholic feelings. Whilst “Frekuensi” (Frequency) is a mandatory song for every Zat Kimia live performance if they don’t want to be trapped as a mushy rock band, the arrangement shows virility and a light complexity in a modern vernacular that keeps them from sounding very pop.

As for the rest, we could say another way we can perceive the album Candu Baru is a contemplation process in which, if we can embrace it deeper, it will bring the listeners to the front of their own self, as if facing a mirror. Asking again what is the meaning of life with all the voids along the trip. “It feels like talking with my own self,” Ian explained about the sensation of his songs; “Euforia Ku Hampa” (My Void Euphoria), “Reaktan” (Reactant), “Waktu dan Aku” (Time and Me) and also “Aku” (Me) which has a most powerful serene vibration as a closing song for the album. In the end Zat Kimia would only move with the senses of the universe. They just want to hear and feel something they only want to hear and feel. If music is considered to be an instrument for the redemption of the soul, then bless all the chemical reactions that are attached and reactive to each other: Candu Baru, or you can call it New Addiction. After all this, the curiousty builds as to how it would be to attend a yoga session accompanied by Zat Kimia’s songs. Enlightening perhaps. www.thebeatbali.com

roove master Shiba San is back on the island and scheduled for a show at Finns Beach Club on December 26! The native Parisian has been on an exponentially rising ride since his hit tracks like ‘Okay’ in 2014 and award winning ‘Burn Like Fire’ which was voted best underground track in 2015 for the IDMA/WMC awards. His most recent EP ‘Fearless’ with Green Velvet on his own Relief Records from Chicago takes us through a journey of deep grooves, jacking beats and classically unique vocals. Apart from the incredible releases on labels like Suara, Dirtybird and previously mentioned Relief, Shiba has been pushing his label Basement Leak to another level as he continues to crank up the heat with tracks like ‘Up & Down’ and ‘You Know What’. It’s not often that you have a DJ that is just as good a producer; Shiba San is and has been one of the most outstanding acts to travel the world with his music. We managed to ask him a few questions about his hefty touring schedule and what’s to come in 2018 before the big gig in Berawa.

FEATURE Hey Shiba, how’s it going? Where are you writing to us from? Hey! I’m currently on my way to Australia for my six date tour starting in Canberra on Friday. Following the Australia tour my first stop is Bali. How has 2017 treated you? Do you have any highlights in particular? 2017 has been great for me. I played at some immense festivals and venues including Coachella and BPM Festival in Mexico. I sold out in the biggest clubs in US – such a great feeling when I saw all these people coming out to see me play. Playing mainstage at Escapade was such an experience with so many people. It was so good. I also released an EP with Green Velvet – it was awesome to work with him ! Out of all the festivals and clubs that you get invited to play at, what are some that you always look forward to play again? I always look forward to playing Movement in Detroit and I hope to get invited to play Coachella again. I had always wanted to play the festival and when I did it was such a great show. I also love playing The Mid in Chicago, Exchange in LA, Space in my home town, Miami, Echostage in DC, so many! I am looking forward to playing more international venues and festivals also. How do you manage your productions whilst touring? Do you ever hire studios while away? Produce on your flights to the next gig? I rarely produce whilst on tour since I need to be in a zone to be the most creative. When I’m on the road, I often get inspiration and record my ideas or a sound I want to create or a track idea I would like to build on. How was it pairing up with Green Velvet? What is the process of starting your ‘Fearless’ EP? I was with Curtis (Green Velvet) in Montreal where we were playing the same festival. We met in the hotel and that’s when things became really official. He had an ID he wanted me to work on, and I also sent him an ID I was working on. He said he thought it was awesome and asked how I would feel about doing a collaborative EP. I of course thought it was amazing! Those two tracks were ‘Fearless’ and ‘Chance.’

From there he suggested we do another track on the EP, maybe something a bit weirder or a little different so that’s when we worked on ‘Rise.’ And then I was feeling really inspired so I sent him another idea I had which became ‘Think’. So there we go, we had four tracks we were working on together for a full collaborative EP when it was supposed to just be one collab on a solo EP from me… amazing! It was an amazing experience. We were very complementary to each other’s sounds. He has a really good approach to the music and vocals, I loved it. For Curtis to deliver such a strong vocal with a message, honestly it’s not possible for me to do that by myself. So, I’m very thankful for our work together because of that. Do you have any releases planned for 2018? A lot of plans for 2018. A lot of releases to come which I’m currently working on, more collaborations, more tour shows, more festivals. All will be revealed in the coming months! I am also playing in Hawaii in the New Year and all three Lollapalooza’s in South America in the spring which I am really looking forward to. What about Basement Leak? What are some of your plans for the label in 2018? To release more music that I love. I get sent music all the time and a lot of great, different sounding tracks which I would like to release on the label. I am also having a Basement Leak stage in Miami which will be a great opportunity to showcase some of the producers that are releasing on the label. I hope to grow the label in 2018. What are some of your favorite records right now? Manish & Astrology T he Beat astrologer Manish Kumar Arora is a world-renowned astrologer, numerologist and tarot card reader based in India whose monthly (and fortnightly, in our case) horoscopes are read by thousands around the world in dozens of publications. We sat down with Manish to find out more about him and the world of astrology.

So Manish, when and how did you get involved in astrology? Was it a calling of sorts? As I began to move into adulthood, I was immediately drawn into this field that seemed to encompass the planets, and yet drew a clear connection to the workings of our lives here on earth. Why are we instantly drawn to some and repelled by others? Why do we find ourselves repeatedly befriending those born in the same week or month? Why do we react the way we do, communicate the way we do? Why we make fortunes in some periods in business and why some periods do not fetch returns? It’s all there in one’s natal chart. It’s what drew me to astrology in the first place. So, involving myself in astrology was a logical process of my quest to know more about these things. How did you know you could do it, read people’s futures accurately? Was there a particular, epiphany moment? Seeing other astrologers reading horoscopes, I was fascinated how with the help of 2-6

charts and some tables, astrologers were able to forecast about past, present and future of persons, their finance pattern, their marital life etc. Curiosity and excitement led me to learning astrology. During astrology classes, test cases which were given to me for analysis drew appreciation from my teacher, making me confident and instilled in me passion and enthusiasm to delve deeper into this wonderful subject. It was not a particular epiphany moment but a gradual process of learning and growth. What is the craziest thing you read in someone’s future that actually came true? This is a very interesting question and takes me down memory lane to early months of 2017. Bollywood movie, ‘’Dangal’’ had already been released in India in December 2016 and was doing earth shattering business. When the news came that its stakeholders were going to release the movie in China, with the help of K.P. Astrology tool, ‘Fortuna’ I was able to predict that its China business may extend beyond

FEATURE Rs1000 crores, while the existing highest grosser record of a Bollywood movie in China was held by ‘’P K’’ which was more than Rs 100 crores. Here I was predicting a craziest forecast of ‘’Dangal’’ making ten times more business than held by an existing record movie ‘’P K “. This predictions was declared absurd and crazy by my friends. Ultimately ‘’Dangal’’ went on to cross Rs 1300 crores – an all-time highest for a Bollywood movie in China. What do you think is the strength of astrology, reading people’s characters or reading the future? I will elaborate the greatest benefit of astrology through an example. If you have to cross a river and if you know where the water level is deeper, you will take your boat accordingly keeping in view the flow of water. Hence, astrology gives you the guidance to follow your path with concrete directions. People who cannot find the answers to the questions on their minds through other means may turn to horoscopes to find some guidance. The mind, the body and the environment, and all they contain, form an undivided field and each of our chart’s features can express themselves in any and all of three main arenas – the inner world of thoughts, beliefs and feelings, the outer world of events and relationships and the interface where these two worlds meet – which is the body. Your readings of my sign are always pretty accurate, how often do you get it wrong? Do people complain much? Thanks very much for your compliment. I have been providing consultation to clients through astrology, numerology, tarot reading and offering them psychic advice for the last twenty years with a good degree of success. My clients have benefitted immensely being guided by my advice to them on issues like love, marriage, relationships, career, finance, business, investment, speculation and education. Overall, I have shared a happy rapport and get respect from people for the same. How can the time and day a person is born have any real influence on your character? How does that work? K.P. Astrology*, which I follow, is based on the principle that the birth of an individual at a particular moment of time, place or city, and

date of the month characterizes his present and future and is based on his Karma done in past life according to Karmic Law. Every city has a unique latitude and longitude and a local mean time (L.M.T.) is generated to get to an individual’s horoscope and is of utmost importance to analyse his present and future events. Every L.M.T., at any moment of time has distinct vibrations and energies which are quite different from a place having another L.M.T. and thus forms the base for analysising a horoscope. What do you say to people when they say astrology is a load of nonsense? Astrology is a divine science. The study of astrology will help you sort out all your options and to act at the proper time. When you are going through a hard time, astrology can give you hope because you will know when the cosmos will give you a hand to get you back on your feet. When you know you’re due for some good fortune, you will have time to prepare so you can position yourself to benefit from it. Last Question: 2017 was a mixed bag for many of us. How is 2018 shaping up? 2018 promises a good year with general growth in the economy. More countries will get united and take a firm and concrete stand against terrorism. Peace, harmony and love will prevail among people. However, we may also face more natural calamities but assistance from friendly countries would be available for affected nations. There will be more advancement in technology. Women all over the world will get more respect and they would occupy strategic posts. (More on 2018 next edition) *K.P. Astrology - KP astrology was invented by Shri K.S. Krishna Murthy. He was a wellknown astrologer from the state of Tamil Nadu, India. espite the heavy rain, I still made it on time for a most awaited dinner at Ultimo at 6pm. The restaurant is located on Jl Kayu Aya, one of the most happening areas in Seminyak. As I arrived, the place had already started filling up with couples and families. I settled at the corner table with the waitress assisting with the napkins, then enjoyed my complimentary bread and cheese sticks while waiting for my meal to arrive. The herb butter spread that comes along with it is my favorite and I could really have had extra. The ambience and atmosphere is lovely with perfect evening music playing in the background. I started things the classic way, a glass of red wine is always a great idea, besides it always goes well with Italian food. Tartara Di Salmone Con Avocade was presented first and I couldn’t ask for a better appetizer. This tasty salmon tartar with my favorite avocado successfully awoke my appetite. Arriving next were pretty good looking grilled pork ribs, Griglia Di Maiale

Neevatura Servita Con Pure Di Patate, Saltati Verdure Con Salsa all’Arancia and the first bite was beautiful. I’ve always had a love affair with pork ribs, especially ones that taste like this. The meat was tender and tasted pretty darn good and flavorful. With sautéed vegetables and mashed potato to complete, I was a happy girl at this point already. Chicken schnitzel came next, along with two daiquiris. The chicken was cooked to a crispy and tender perfection and served over mashed potato and comes with broccoli, cherry tomato, gravy and a Gorgonzola sauce. This dish is included in Ultimo’s set menu promo, only IDR 200k for a four course meal. Also on promo is their menu speciale combo with choices such as grilled striploin beef with spaghetti and fresh tomato sauce, Gnocchi Pesce Dory served with butter lemon sauce and more. Don’t miss their meal deal menu from 10pm onwards; a glass of house red wine comes complimentary with meals such as breaded chicken leg with barbecue chipotle sauce amongst the list. And

let’s not forget The VIP Card discount of 15% on everything except other promos. The daiquiris were equally refreshing although I personally loved the strawberry one over the blueberry as it had a perfect level of sweetness to my taste. Ultimo has quite a rich selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and are currently having a special promo of IDR 70k for any choice of margarita / daiquiri as well as special deals for Guinness, Corona and Smirnoff vodka. I already felt stuffed at this point but couldn’t deny my mission of trying one of their pasta dishes. I opted for Fusilli Campagna from their primi piatti (first course) menu and it didn’t disappoint. Mushroom, black olive, zucchini and feta cheese goes really well with the fusilli pasta and I was then ready for a sweet finish to all the goodness I had enjoyed. Soon enough, cannoli crepes served with ricotta cream cheese and salted sauce were brought

to the table. Though I’m not normally one for sweets, this delicious dessert was pleasantly enjoyed to the very last bite. Those with a sweet tooth can explore many options in their rich selection of desserts and ice cream. More and more people were coming in as I sipped my last glass of white wine to top off all the goodness served on my table. Ultimo is always busy (you know busy restaurants are always a good sign!), besides the great atmosphere and food, the menu is reasonably priced and the service was attentive and friendly. Reputation Taylor Swift’s all-conquering fifth album ‘1989’ saw her flying about as far away from the humble country stylings of her 2008 debut as she could get, but here on what’s sure to be 2018’s most pervasive album, she’s flown even further. ‘Reputation’ takes the knowing pop sass of the last LP and builds heavily on it – touching on predictable themes of love, lust, breakups and that tiresome business of being an A-lister. One can’t help but pine for the loss of the kind of romantic vulnerability and heartfelt ballads last seen on 2012’s ‘RED’, but on the other side of the coin it’s hard not to be impressed at just how much of a pop powerhouse Swift™ has become. She takes no prisoners – herself included – and it’s these apparently genuine glimpses into her psyche that continue to prove so fascinating. “I never trust a playboy/but they love me,” she purrs egotistically on ‘I Did Something Bad’ – “So I fly ‘em all around the world/and let them think they saved me” (LOL Kasian de Luh, Tom Hiddleston/Calvin Harris etc). Taken alone statements like this might come off as a tad arrogant, but later, on the confessional ‘Getaway Car’, she admits “Us traitors never

win.” No-one’s perfect I guess, even global mega stars, but honesty sure can be profitable when all your old boyfriends are also a bunch of A-listers. Musically though, ‘Reputation’ falls short – most likely thanks to those meddling marketing dudes and focus groups trying to ensure the world’s biggest crossover star continues to grow that fan base. Swift’s strength has always been her own songwriting – granted it’s usually augmented by other writers – but still there’s no disguising her knack for a tune, but here it’s mostly drowned out by all the noise designed to make sure each single stays top of the pops. ‘1989’ was always going to be hard to beat, and the new material is not her best work by a long stretch, but its good enough to ensure her reputation stays intact. Endless list of exes and watered down songwriting notwithstanding, Swift continues to be a genuine role model – rightfully included as one of the ‘Silence Breakers’ in Time’s collective ‘Person of the Year’ honours. Made Kenak Dwi Adnyana Madek Kenak Dwi Adnyana was born and raised in Kintamani. Although he did not grow up in an artistic environment, he has now established himself as one of the most emerging artists in local art scene. Through his art, he portrays the landscape of his homeland. As the landscape is the most essential image of nature’s ‘body’ for him, he reflects the existence of nature through his works, portraying both the good and harsh realities which are faced by the nature. Why are you interested in creating art? I think my talent and hobby were the ‘seeds’ that would continue to evolve over the time. However, the main factor was still the process; how the talent and hobby were developed and honed with the basic art knowledge. Therefore, I went to study fine arts in the university. From the learning process, I started to recognize things like the tools and materials which are used to create art. Meanwhile, the point that made me very sure to pursue my art career was when I got many references and began to know many figures in the art scene. What is your source of inspiration in creating your works? My art is much inspired by the beauty of the landscape of my birthplace in Kintamani. From the aesthetic experiences that I have been through, there are various things that evoke my senses to make it as the themes of my works. However, on my works, I don’t just portray what I see from the beauty of the landscape. There are other things that also intrigue me. In my creative process, I

don’t only focus on two-dimensional works. I also create three-dimensional works to accommodate these ideas. How about the concept of your art? My works explore a lot about nature. However, I don’t describe nature as a whole here. I place more emphasis on a spatial value in which landscape becomes the basic object. I then add to it with geometric and artificial forms, presenting a narrative that is more than just painting nature. Through your color selection, what emotions do you want to convey? There are two things that affect my decision to use bright colors on my works. First, visually, the use of bright colors is a form of my courage to get out of my habit of using calm and plain colors. Second, conceptually, these bright colors represent my emotional expression of the dominance of the colorful objects on my works, so that people won’t only be focusing on seeing the beauty of nature that I paint, but also turning their attentions to these artificial forms. www.thebeatbali.com
