FINNS BEACH CLUB JOINING SOLEMEN FOUNDATION’S PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM Finns Beach Club believes in giving back to the community of which they are an integral part. In line with this, their CSR program is now proudly supporting the Outreach Program of Solemen Foundation, Bali’s most visible charity whose major focus is to find, treat and heal the sick, desperately poor and disfranchised people in remote communities. Solemen’s founder, Robert Epstone, says that a major sponsorship provided by Finns can make a massive difference by financing their Outreach Program. Thanks to Finns’ one-year IDR one billion sponsorship, Solemen can now seriously expand the reach of their outreach team. Finns have been supporting Solemen for the past few years, with proceeds of their annual Melbourne Cup event providing a major funding boost for the Outreach Program. This year’s event netted proceeds of IDR 300 million for Solemen. In addition to their ongoing monetary support, they also dedicate a Finns staff member to volunteer with the outreach team two days per week.

SAGA Festival unlocks its destiny on a wet Thursday night in December 42

www.thebeatbali.com

FEATURE SAGA Festival held at GWK was nothing less than an amazing dance music festival. Not just for the usual reasons of a great line-up, staging etc but also just for pulling such a massive crowd over two nights between Christmas and New Year – and while it was drizzling and Mount Agung had put a volcanic threat over the whole event. We spoke to Winni Pratiwi Marcom for the SAGA Festival and also new social media manager at Mirror Club in Petitenget to find out how it all came about.

TB: So who was behind the event? Was it their first time or how? Winni: It was us, ALLIN Group. And yes, this is our first time doing a show as big as this. It was so well organised and the stage etc was near breathtaking. How did you put that together being the first time? As you know, we already have event spaces, (Mirror Bali and Fable Jkt) and some restaurants and bars. And SAGA was like a new way to elevate our dream. Put together all of the fabulous things to see and do it in this tropical paradise, transforming the experience where music, art, food and dance music collides. We didn’t have a big team, but we did believe that we could do it and we had the spirit to make it happen. And finally, it happened. The main stage was quite amazing. Was it all built here in Bali? Yes, all stages were built in Bali, finished around seven days before the event. We had two stages. And who designed them? We designed them. Our team. Inspiring. I imagine the costs for this event must have been tremendous, with the amount of quality DJs and super stages etc. But I also imagine there is a long term plan. You must be looking to the future with this project. Yes, we’re already planning the next edition. This year already. End of the year.

Will it be the same time this year? We’re still not sure. We’re still discussing the date. I was surprised at how many people were there. I went on the opening Thursday night and it was raining heavily in Seminyak when we left. I wasn’t expecting too much, but was pleasantly surprised when we arrived to find a few thousand people there. What did you think of the turn out, the size of the crowd? It was good enough, we had around 10k people through the doors. Considering the Mount Agung situation at that time, I think it was a good sized crowd that turned up. That’s fantastic. What was a highlight for you at the festival? The number one highlight was definitely the headline acts. They were amazing. Besides, the Balinese performances like the kecak dance during the evenings was also fun. How about the underground stage? It didn’t seem to be too busy, will there be an underground stage next year? We’re still considering that. BTW what does SAGA mean and why that name? SAGA itself means a long story of heroic achievement, a series of incidents or events / a long series of adventures. And that could well describe this event, well destined for long and enduring adventures. www.thebeatbali.com

RESIDENT

Continuing our series of interviews with resident DJs on the island, this week we went LIVE on Facebook to ask a few questions of one of the great residents seen all around town for the past many years, DJ Fadi. In his early days, Fadi Alturk played from clubs to festivals in Europe, North Africa and Asia, playing a range of tech house, tribal, progressive to even psy trance. When he first came to Bali in 2002, the island greeted him with open arms in places like 66 Club and he has lead the way in some of the best clubs since. Recently he started a record label with some of his best friends that goes by the name of Bali Praia

they used to have DJs perform there. So I just asked how to use the equipment, and I learned myself, and two month later I started to be the resident DJ playing there.. That time I was using Denon 2000.

So Fadi tell us a bit about your background? How did you come to be a DJ? I used to work in a restaurant in my hometown in Sweden called Golden Bar and every weekend

So how did you first come to Bali? I owned a candy store in Sweden when I was 18 years old, and two times a year we had a market in our little town called Lycksele . It was

48

www.thebeatbali.com

So what kind of music were you playing back then? Hehe, that time I was only 16 years old, so I was into TOP 40, in other words, radio music.

FEATURE

the winter market and outside my candy store there was someone selling carvings from Bali. His name was Budha Sutedja. So we became best friends, he was even my mentor.. and Budha ended up being a resident DJ at 66. So he finally brought me to Bali with him in 2002.

Do you often get the chance to play off-shore, overseas as a guest DJ? Oh yes, I just got back from two festivals in Thailand, one in Phuket and played for Wonderfruit Festival in Pattaya. I’m hoping for more offshore gigs this year.

What was the music scene like back then when you arrived? I must say it was the golden time ... Specially Doublesix Club. It didn’t matter who you were, what you had or how you looked, everyone was partying together as one.. So much positive energy .. The music style at that time was funky house, tribal, progressive and psy trance was big too..

What kind of music do you like to play out most nowadays? Do you see a change lately? I love all sorts of music, genres are really hard today to tell what is what. Today’s music is very mixed up. We even started our own genre called ISLANDTECH. It all depends on where I play. At Finns I would mostly play house or future house. At 707 some tribal, melodic techno. But mostly what I love to play is still progressive and tech house...

So what do you think about the music and nightlife scene in Bali now? What do you think about the direction it’s going? The scene in Bali has become so much bigger and more spread out. There are so many more clubs, bar etc .. And Bali has tourists coming from all around the world. That means the music scene in Bali has become way more diverse. Bali have become one of the most famous music destination’s in the world and it’s not just electronic music, in Ubud there is a lot of ethnic and world music festivals too. The difference today, same as the rest of the world, beach clubs and day parties are what most people look for. So what would be the busiest resident DJ gigs you have at the moment? I play mostly at Finns Beach Club, and 707. Where else do you spin regularly? I play sometimes at Jenja, and Arboon for their fullmoon parties. So how is it being a resident DJ? What are the highs and lows? The highs are that you have a regular schedule, and it becomes your homebase where you feel more comfortable and confident of what to play ... The lows would be that sometimes you can get bit monotone and boring as they aren’t as big a challenge as guest gigs .. and it’s hard to spread our music to other places...

The real progressive.. And that brings us onto your other projects. What are the latest projects for DJ Fadi? Well, I guess it’s not so new anymore, but our latest project is Bali Praia. I am so excited to finally follow my passion and work with music as a business. My partners and I in Bali Praia have started a record label/music studio/ Lounge and an upcoming cafe that is the first ever artist and DJ co-working space and hub where people in the region could meet, make music, collaborate and make an impact, while supporting local and international communities and raise the bar of Bali to the world. We are very excited about this ... That sounds very exciting indeed and we’ll get back to Praia soon, but for now, where can the people out there get to hear your tunes this week on the island? Friday and Sunday I will be playing at Finns Beach Club and Saturday at 707 Beach Berm, Batu Belig .. you are all welcome! Cheers Fadi. Thanks for joining us live on Facebook. Hope you enjoyed it, folks. Any last words Fadi Alturk? Please follow our journey at @balipraia Instagram and Facebook. And remember... MUSIC IS THE KEY Check out Fadi’s soundcloud right here; https://soundcloud.com/djfadibali www.thebeatbali.com

e arrived at Mya Restaurant on a drizzly afternoon and we sat at the front bar for a while watching a few visitors playing pool and the people moving in and out. Feeling refreshed after an ice cold coke, we then moved to the airconditioned main room inside as we were ready to taste something tasty and warm. Lamb shank rendang was up first, it was quite big – I thought initially. Meat was nicely cooked, juicy, falling off the bone tender with a rich rendang flavor. I had to pick every little bit of meat left on the bone and still wanted more. Yes, it was that delicious! Beautifully served next was the grilled whole snapper in salt crust, which comes with dipping sauce that tasted like rujak sambal. This perfectly balanced the salty skin part of

the fish, and this too tasted beautiful – we totally left the whole plate clean, except for the bones – of course. Mya has a wide selection of cocktails, wine and spirits to pair with both western and Asian dishes to choose from the menu. From Vietnamese prawn rolls and Bahn Xeo for starters, a taste of Balinese traditional soups such as Garang Asem and refreshing Thai green papaya salad. They also have Bebek betutu – Balinese traditional slow cooked spiced (half) duck for IDR 75k and IDR 145k if you opted for whole duck. A range of fish and curry dishes are also available to try, as well as noodles and rice bowls. In case you’re in the mood for a classic cheese burger, Mya offers quite a selection of burgers, grilled meats and sweet treats you would definitely want to try.

Who loves freaky shakes? I do! Try Choco Monster Inc from their Freaky Shakes menu, delicious chocolate ganache mixed with chocolate gelato and full cream milk – though it’s pretty big size is designed for sharing, I’m not sharing mine. Don’t forget, from noon – 3pm everyday you can enjoy a pretty sweet deal of all you can eat a la carte lunch for only IDR 175k nett per person.

CD REVIEW

TOP TEN ALBUMS OF 2017 Holy crap is it 2018 already? Must have slept through the alarm (Well there was an awful lot of partying to get through after all). Musically 2017 was a pretty fantastic year, so here’s our ten faves from the past 12 months. We can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store, so keep your eyes on the Beat mag for your dose of new music reviews. Peace out and keep yer chin up x 1. The War on Drugs | A Deeper Understanding 10/10 Following on from 2013 breakthrough Lost in the Dream was never gonna be an easy task, but frontman/songwriter Adam Granduciel took the American heartland rock formula and refined it to achieve an album that is just about perfect. 2. Bonobo | Migration 9/10 Few producers are as adept as Simon Green at breathing life into digital music, and while it may contain a few less ‘stand out’ cuts than previous LPs, it could be argued that as a whole, Migrations is a damn near flawless collection of electro tunes that exude a wonderfully organic sound. 3. Royal Blood | How Did We Get So Dark? 8/10 Round two for Royal Blood and it’s business as usual for the Brighton-based duo. Namely; an instantly listenable foot-stomping guitar-driven din with exactly zero grams of fat to hang off its glam-metal bones. Gigantic riffs, primal drums, loud as cannons. 4. Kendrick Lamar | DAMN. 8/10 An uncompromising album from the current king of hip hop, dealing head on with notions of America on the brink of apocalypse, racial barriers, and the new white White House. A rallying call for a pissed off generation of disenfranchised youth who would

66

www.thebeatbali.com

very much like to see an end to things like white privilege and police brutality. Vital stuff. 5. St. Vincent | MASSEDUCTION 8/10 MASSEDUCTION is a sleazy treat that picks up neatly where Annie Clarke – aka St. Vincent - left off on 2014’s frenetic-but-fun self-titled St Vincent, having lost none of her abrasive volatility along the way. 6. The xx | I See You 7/10 Unlike previous albums, The xx’s third LP is actually upbeat, groovy, and – incredibly for the ever-gloomy Wandsworth trio – verging on happy. 7. Jamiroquai | Automaton 7/10 Not only is Automaton good, it confidently straddles the old and new sound of Jamiroquai, fusing it together for an album that leaves the last couple of lackluster efforts (Rock Dust Light Star, Dynamite) in its future disco dust. 8. Kasabian | For Crying Out Loud 7/10 Another accomplished effort from Leicester’s finest, these songs are the sound of joy – simple and uncomplicated little pleasures that will help a few pub-garden beers go down a treat. 9. Depeche Mode | Spirit 6/10 Make no mistake, there are no skies of blue or trees of green here - Spirit is no easy listen, but in highlighting humanity’s biggest issues it is undoubtedly an essential one. 10. Alt-J | Relaxer 5/10 A labyrinthine art-pop flop from the Oxford trio that despite flashes of their old brilliance never quite gets out of second gear.

ART

Satya Cipta Art has been part of Satya Cipta’s life since she was very young. She sang at her school events, she took drawing classes and she joined her school theater group. The last activity then sparked her enthusiasm to continue her education at the Jakarta Institute of Arts, taking performing arts as her major in 2006. Departing from her research about the oldest theater tradition in Bali, she later found admiration for the complexity of Batuan paintings. She fell in love with it, leading her to what she does most today – painting. She is part of a special women’s collection at Monkey Forrest Gallery till January 22. You studied performing arts, but now you also paint. How do they relate? Performing arts aren’t only about the stage; it’s more than that. Through performing arts, I learn about characters, philosophies and life in detail. The way of thinking I’ve formed through learning performing arts has then supported me to learn more about painting. In my opinion, I just move my stage into a ‘two-dimensional stage’. The rest is the same. Blocking, composition, lighting, character and presentation are not much different. Only, I feel freer in determining the final results of my paintings. Why? Because I’m the creator who determines the narratives. Do the performing arts inspire or bring influences to your paintings? Where else do your inspiration come from? Performing arts certainly has a major impact on my creating process because it feels like I’m directing my own ‘two-dimensional stage’. I’m directing scenes, so that the minor roles can support the main objects of my paintings. My paintings are inspired by my many questions about the events around me. It’s usually social and emotional criticisms that I feel as a human being. But

now, I feel more connected with the energy of Bali. Its nature is an inspiration for me. Your paintings’ characteristic? My paintings’ characteristic lies within its colors. I normally use softer colors; not too bright and a bit brownish. For now, I’m learning to paint in black and white, focusing on how I’m able to create a dramatic ‘scene’ and convey my feelings with only those two colors. Furthermore, I also often add symbolism into my works. About your paintings exhibited at Monkey Forest Gallery. One of my exhibited paintings has a different character from my previous paintings which are more into Batuan style. Here, I display strong use of lines as it’s the major force in my paintings, beside the colors I use. I mostly used the techniques that I learned from my teacher, Ketut Budiana, but what I describe here is the honesty of my personal feelings or emotions. I also exhibit another painting in Batuan style, so that visitors can see the transition that has occurred in my creative process. This painting’s inspiration emerged from my visit to Borneo, as well as from their culture. www.thebeatbali.com

ARC Anti-aging Beauty Clinics Offering you comprehensive solutions for your beauty and dental health. ARC Anti-aging Beauty Clinics Jl. Sunset Road No. 819, Kuta T. 754 645/766 282/750 982

LOOK Set on Sunset Road, ARC Anti-aging Beauty Clinics is certainly one of the best aesthetic destinations in the island. The interior is lavish, with a spacious lobby area leading through to a corridor that reveals a multitude of informal seating areas, private consultation rooms and treatment rooms. The white-dominated interior is kept simple yet elegant, with a grey rug creating a warm atmosphere. The clinic’s state-of-the-art facilities complement the treatments offered. FEEL Visiting the clinic means it’s time for a happy face and a wide smile. Our experience here started with their new “Express Facial” (350k), an ideal solution for people who have tight schedules, as well as for those who prefer to not undergo the extraction method which can be painful. In addition to brightening the skin, this treatment was meant for relaxation, with the procedure including face cleansing, scrubbing and toning, followed by a soothing massage, minty face mask and sunscreen application. Carried out in as little as 45 minutes, it was indeed a perfect quick-fix for the dull, tired-looking skin. Our experience continued with their “Teeth Whitening” (2,900k) which took approximately two hours. It began with consultation session with the dentist to give us a better indication of how the treatment works. As we wished to proceed, the treatment continued with teeth cleaning to remove plaques and tartars. Making sure that

we would feel as most comfortable as possible throughout the whitening session, we had our tongue and gum protected, so that it won’t be harmed by the gel. The gel itself was applied to the teeth three times during the session, activated by light for about ten minutes each to let it work. After the last application, we got our teeth and gum cleaned, ended with teeth mousse application as the after treatment. INGREDIENTS The facial treatment uses Nelly De Vuyst which has a longstanding reputation as one of the most effective and corrective brands on the market. The products are known to combine the finest of science and nature for long-lasting results. Meanwhile, the dental treatment uses an American product, Everbrite In-Office Tooth Whitening Kit, as well as 35% hydrogen peroxide gel. MAGIC As the first for its kind in Bali, they have always taken the issue of beauty seriously. Besides the facilities, their comprehensive treatments are supported by a dedicated team of doctors and nurses to ensure their guests’ comfort, safety and hygiene.
