KWEE-ZEEN AT SOFITEL BALI
A
rriving at Sofitel’s spectacular lobby, we walked down the stairs to KweeZeen restaurant which features multiple cuisine sections from a wide array of fresh sushi and sashimi at the Japanese to a selection of dim sum and dumplings at its Chinese steam section and much more in a Asian hawker way. Comfortably seated at the spacious, indoor/ outdoor restaurant, I opted for a well needed cup of cappuccino to start with - to refresh myself after the drive from Canggu. You see, I’m one of those “But first, coffee” kind of people. The gourmet dining starts as a plate of scallops arrives on the table, beautifully decorated with saffron chips and fish roe on top. Sweet tasting charred scallop with rich herbs melted happily in my mouth, which was a perfect appetizer. Arriving next was yet another mouth-watering dish, sous vide lamb loin cooked to perfection. The juicy, tender and rich flavoured meat was beautifully served with delicious potato cake, glazed vegetable root and rosemary juice on the side - it tasted heavenly to the very last bite.

FOOD
As if that wasn’t impressive enough, a one meter wooden tray filled with Indonesia’s best signature dishes was served before my sparkling eyes. As a proud Indonesian, Indonesian food is life and what was served before me was that and beyond - it felt like, a celebration of life. The one meter signature platter dish that we ordered from the menu featured my all time favorites. A bowl of simply delicious oxtail soup with the meat falling off the bone tender, flavorful ayam bakar marinated with a mixture of herbs and sweet soy sauce, Balinese traditional sate lilit, veggie stir fry and perhaps one of the best beef rendang I’ve ever had. As common as it is to find in local warungs on the island - finding a “proper” rendang has always been a long journey to take, so to find this tender, flavourful rendang is absolute happiness for me! Also part of the set is Udang Balado, prawns in spicy chilli sauce which was simply delicious! And of course, the whole set comes with a basket of yellow rice which happened to be one
of the best I’ve ever tasted in Bali – as we all know that a lot of Indonesian dishes are based around rice, and in this case yellow rice is also known to be served on special occasions and celebrations. To top it all off, the platter also comes with a selection of toppings such as shredded chicken, fried peanuts and of course what is Indonesian food without sambal? The sambal matah was my most favorite of all. A delicious strawberry and lemon panacotta made it a very happy ending. All in all, KweeZeen is an authentic and delightful dining experience with ambience and amazing cuisine to bring you back for more. As well as Indonesian, the menu and food stations also feature delicious Pan Asian cuisine from all over the region. [Rachma Nineth]

What Do You Recommend, VIN+ Seminyak Crispy Salmon
CHEF?
Chef: Samsul
Known to serve mostly Italian food, VIN+ Seminyak menu consists of delectable options which have been crafted thoughtfully to suit the wine options they offer. With four years of experience in their kitchen, their chef, Samsul, really knows that their Crispy Salmon (150k) is truly a stunner among others in their signature menu, and so, he didn’t hesitate to recommend it. It is a buttered 160-gram Tasmanian salmon steak, seasoned with basic seasonings like salt and pepper, pan-seared until it has the outside crispiness, while allowing the outside to remain moist. Adding the greens and more, this salmon comes with edamame beans and sautÊed veggies, as well as the smooth mashed potato. What to love about this dish is its sweet and sour teriyaki sauce, made from lime juice, honey and oyster sauce, making a perfect condiment to this succulent salmon. Pair it with a glass of wine, this Crispy Salmon will be a perfect idea for your next dining and wining plan at VIN+ Seminyak.

A
precious ritual of the Balinese, when having a drink outdoors anyway, is the habit of giving their island the first sip, by tipping a new bottle towards the ground as an oblation to the holy gods. This shows how much they respect the nature around them and at the same time sharing some good will for a great celebration. This happened backstage of the Legian Festival when a bottle of whiskey was freshly opened, and people spilled out a little too much of the contents onto the sand. Everybody is saluting each other with their hands: high fives, then fist bumps. Beatmaker-emcee DwixNaskleng set his two faint eyes that were hidden under the shadow of his brown porkpie hat on the sand that was drowning his sneakers. Out front on stage, beatmaker-preacher Oddy and other emcees, Tyo BigTBlack with Wira 8-Bless are busy babbling, laughing, passing the empty glass around that was demolished by Erik - the last emcee who was standing with a slightly humped-back posture – wearing an army jacket and a beer can grasped in his left hand waiting for the command to go on. When the command finally arrives, Erik’s Flores jaw is rattling with gracious attitude and flowing with his fiery adrenaline. “This is the time for war!” exclaimed Erik heroically to me as he passes. The funnel is echoing and the boys are ready to get inside the ring to fight like a chin up demonstator in front of a police shield. Then their turntableist starts releasing his needle, scratching loud from black asphalt grooves of Harlem spirit. Goldvoice was formed eight years ago in Bali. Their album, F*ck Your Side (released in 2013 via Rumble Records) barked out like a riotous dog. A vigorous debut where every rhyme on the record is like an anger shell, resulting from the dissident poems. The motive is, of course
politics, and in this case the failure of the decorous Indonesian nationals wanting their complete liberty. In Bali, among the social discourse between stick to the roots or doing the capital investment, Goldvoice slap their land’s lullabies with royal words like ‘puki (twat!)’ and ‘naskleng (dick!)’. Getting mad in every exclamation mark, comma and dot, supplicating catastrophe for the capitalist cockroach families. Out loud and berserk. Through Oddy – who has a muddy voice, spurting and heavy like an old gorilla when rapping, Goldvoice manifests their position in this social order. “We prefer to abstain. What’s the difference? Whoever the winner, it’s only going to be news without reality. Politics is a game of illusion,” he said. While Eric says before getting on stage that he wants to get onto the battle field, at the same time the rest of his compatriots are already shaping a warhorse. Their fierce shadows are illuminating the stage then spreading in war-like formations rotating some angsty jabber dance: five emcees with their faces fluctuating from expression to expression; grinning, grumbling, snapping like laughter upon the dignity of their true honest prose. So blazing until Oddy has to borrow some sentences from Nietzsche’s Zarathustra to express, “We can only feel the love of life when we’re on the battle field. And for us, the stage is our battle field. Because only from there can we raise our voices.” In the end, rap has become one of the most vulgar and obnoxious products that was born from the words of art, presenting a certain faith of life, struggle and militant resistance. Music for the oppressed and the glutinous, however, blatant but genuine blood flows in their heads. Goldvoice shout, “F*ck your side!”. www.thebeatbali.com

CD REVIEW
8/10 foo – kin good.
FOO FIGHTERS
Concrete and Gold After nine studio albums and having won pretty much all the music awards that are worth winning, Dave Grohl and his Foo Fighters could be forgiven for trading the foot pedals for foot slippers and slinking off for a quiet retirement somewhere hot. Instead, they’ve opted to keep those pedals firmly on overdrive mode, delivering yet another barnstorming album packed full of beefy riffs, canny songwriting and shoutyourself-hoarse vocals. In an interview Grohl described Concrete and Gold as an album where “hard rock extremes and pop sensibilities collide”, which pretty much hits the nail on the head. Foo Fighters have always been popular with the masses, but what keeps them riveting are those throat-shredding moments when all hell breaks loose. Consider opening maelstrom “T-Shirt” – an almost imperceptible few bars of quiet acoustic strumming before the mallet comes
down. Just make sure your speakers aren’t turned up too high. From there the pace rarely drops off as the album gallops through the punky screech of “Run” and sultry groove of “Make it Right” before delivering the album’s knock out blow “La Dee Da”; a fuzzbass whirlwind that sounds like Royal Blood squared, and from which all else on Concrete and Gold radiates. Thematically the album considers the uncertain future of the United States, with the heated atmosphere of the 2016 elections and the presidency of Donald Trump cited as major influences by Grohl. It’s an effective backdrop for the kind of tunes where pissed off people (e.g., all the normal ones) can scream along to vent a bit of rage about how badly the current Commander in Chief is steering the ship. Superb, exhilarating stuff. Dan Ashcroft

Now – January 28 Amandari Compelled to protect the ‘mula’, the indigenous people of Bali, as well as their culture, Yvonne Pekerti collaborated with respected elder, Wayan Sukrata, on a single dwelling restoration in Northern Bali. Fully-supported in her vision to strengthen their culture through this project, the artist was assisted by the entire community of Pendawa in the restoration. This exhibition at Amandari captures the simpler times. Themed “The Open”, it displays a glimpse of the past; the light supplied by slits in the woven bamboo and cloth, dancing off fire singed the wooden beams and the door held ajar by rock. Amandari, Jl. Kedewatan, Ubud.
Now – January 31 Rumah Sanur Creative Hub After a month of intense and comical discussions, Budi Agung Kuswara and Komang Sudiarta have finally released their miniature masterpieces, displayed at Rumah Sanur Creative Hub. Coming from distinct backgrounds, this exhibition sees the two Balinese artists collaborate to create for a cause. Their miniature paintings evoke Bali as a cultural destination in a playful yet delicate way. They picture traditional Balinese life in fantastic situations, depicted in an aesthetic combination of sun-printing and Keliki style of painting. Keliki style is distinct for the delicate details with deep tones on a miniature scale, while the sun-print is distinguished by a vivid Prussian blue and photographic details. The artists combine these two techniques to break away, as well as to look at their own culture in a different light. Rumah Sanur Creative Hub, Jl. Danau Poso No. 51A, Sanur

Dancing with the Shadows Now – February 15 The Oberoi Bali The Oberoi Bali currently hosts its latest exhibition by Nyoman Erawan titled “Dancing with the Shadows”. This exhibition showcases the Balinese veteran artist’s abstract works where there is no description of objects that we can identify; just traces of brush strokes and colors. Moreover, the paintings shows some rules about the look on the surface fields, as well as the effects of an explosion. The artist’s skills also give rise to various forms of unexpected possibilities, generated by a paint technique that describes the position of him as a senior experienced painter. Chaotic in Nature
Now – January 31 Deus Gallery
Deus Gallery is back to present its latest exhibition by Australia-born artist, David Eagles, titled “Chaotic in Nature”. The artist’s creativity is fuelled by the chaotic nature of Indonesia’s cities, from street venders, to amusement parks, rural and urban living contrast each other in close proximity. A landscape where the traditions of the ancient Majapahit Empire are still practiced, overlaid with modern street graffiti. His observation on what makes Indonesia unique is the idea that it is a land where heaven and hell seem to have been pushed closer together than in the west, and as a result the energies of both flow proportionately throughout the cities and the land. Having worked in surf and street print design since 1987, he combines traditional painting with photography, digital print and screen print, and is not shy around a spray can. David Eagles also designed the first 30 or so covers of the beat magazine - true collectables. 10% of the sale of his art will later be donated to Keep Bali Clean, an environmental campaign focused on reducing litter in Bali. ART
Budi Agung Kuswara Budi Agung Kuswara, nicknamed Kabul, left Bali in 1999 to pursue his study in Yogyakarta. Drawing inspiration from the diverse social issues he has experienced during his stay in Yogyakarta and employing the Balinese tradition of storytelling, he composes images which evolve around social reality. He’s currently exhibiting his works at Rumah Sanur Creative Hub until the end of January.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? I was born and raised in Bali, and I’ve pursued art since my study at the High School of Arts in Batubulan. The high school times were when I looked for my identity. The situation at the time made me move out from Bali and continue my studies in Yogyakarta. Unlike now, being accepted by Institute of Arts in Yogyakarta wasn’t easy. The selection process was very strict, while the applicants were too many. Thankfully, I was accepted. I started living in Yogyakarta and realized that the art situation was very different compared to Bali, especially in terms of understanding art.
It’s being said that whatever you got in Yogyakarta is still strong, and you still carry it with you even after your return to Bali. Yes, because art with this particular character is always close to the social reality. Meanwhile, the art tendency in Bali is like trying to freeze itself from the social reality. It doesn’t have so much development, and is so well-preserved. However, if we look back, the tradition didn’t exist instantly. It has influences from the kingdom era, and it has been going through a long process. The art beyond that is something that can move along social reality steadily, and it’s more relevant.
How do you get ideas for your art? In Yogyakarta, I found another art function that is beyond what I saw in Bali. In Bali, for me, it’s more about the tradition itself; it’s either a part of ritual or tourism. In Yogyakarta, art is related closely to the movements in society, including political issues and activism. From there, what I see now is that art function is actually more than tourism or attractions.
How about the elements of parody in your art? That’s one way to communicate, conveying something through parody. Visual language is normally multi-interpretational. As an artist, we can’t always expect that our audiences will understand the meaning of our works like the way we do. Additionally, it’s also how the works can communicate something in a form that is not too serious, while still containing a seriousness within. www.thebeatbali.com

SPA
Smita Spa
This spa can help whenever you feel like getting pampered in Sanur.
Smita Spa ARTOTEL Sanur, Jl. Kusuma Sari No. 1, Sanur T. 472 1000 LOOK Located on the rooftop, precisely next to the ARTOTEL Sanur’s rooftop bar and swimming pool, Smita Spa is the ideal place for a bit of rest and relaxation. The bar space is utilized as the lounging area, allowing guests to enjoy their welcome drinks and sea breezes while waiting for their rooms to get prepared. The treatment rooms stand on another side of the rooftop, small but comfy, complete with wooden furniture, deconstructed walls, cement floors and dimmed lighting that enhances its soothing ambience. FEEL Looking through their menu, we could see that this spa uniquely infuses traditional and natural elements into their treatments, combined with their exotic herb-based products for an authentic Balinese pampering. We got our hands on one of their offers which is “Fruity Stone Senses Body Massage” (405k), a fusion treatment where we got engulfed in fruity scent as our tension was melted away by the hot stones. After a soothing foot wash, we were layed on the massage table, and the stretching was carried out gently by our therapist to get our body ready for what’s next. The aromatic Balinese massage was done first, with a combination of gentle stretches, acupressure and reflexology, bringing a sense of wellbeing and deep relaxation. Done with the
massage, the hot stone massage was applied afterward, using smooth, heated basalts as the extension of our therapist’s hands. While holding the heated stones, the hands moved smoothly on our body to help warm up the tight muscles. As the movements ended, these stones were then left on the specific points to improve the flow of energy in our body. After two hours, our treatment was finished with a nice shower, followed by a cup of warm ginger tea that helped us feel totally reenergized. INGREDIENTS As it name implies, this treatment uses coconut oil which has been infused with fruits for their distinguished aromas. The fruityscented options are Strawberry Oil, Mango Oil and Chocolate Oil which can be chosen to suit each guest’s fancy. MAGIC Whenever you feel like taking your mind off any pressure or simply making your holiday more fulfilling in Sanur, Smita Spa can help. Besides their awesome rooftop location and the artsy interiors, we also loved how they combine modern, traditional and natural elements in their treatments. That’s not to mention their enticing promos, including the Happy Hour where you can enjoy up to 50% off all of their treatments.

HEALTHY BALI
Bali Training Center B
ali has become a popular fitness destination since Crossfit and MMA dominated the hip area of Canggu. Slowly but surely, it’s only natural that other areas on the island are following suit. For Muay Thai enthusiasts in Uluwatu, you might’ve heard the good news about the opening of Bali Training Centre six months ago.. Jake Iling, the owner was in Phuket for a Muay Thai training back in 2012 and has grown very passionate about this combat sports and to be living in Uluwatu with hardly any decent gym for Muay Thai training – Jake thought he had to do something about it. Muay Thai, the ancient form known as “The Art of Eight Limbs” based on its fundamental of using eight strike points (fists, elbows, knees and feet) has been one of the rising stars in the fitness industry since MMA bouts became popular worldwide. A well rounded strength and conditioning is needed in MMA and Muay Thai has all of the aspects for an MMA fighter to gain a solid strength foundation. Nowadays, people train Muay Thai simply for fitness. The total body movements have all the fitness elements covered including muscular endurance, strength, agility & flexibility, balance and core strength.

HEALTHY BALI
With the intention to making a space for himself to do what he loves, Jake wanted to share the experience of learning Muay Thai with others – six months later, his training class is packed with up to 35 people sweating it out with him which is very impressive. The class lasts for approximately 90 minutes, combines basic techniques, pad works, heavy bag works and additional fitness challenge in between as well as some body weight workouts and abdominal finishers to wrap it up. Having new visitors coming to train everyday, Jake always incorporates basic techniques in each of his classes to make sure everyone mastered it properly. His class has inspired many of his loyal clients. For Shanty, one of the regular members, the class has helped her through tough times and Jake’s motivation and support have been of value in her fitness journey. Liz, who at first felt intimidated by the sport is now totally enjoying it and loving the community – Vicky, who has been training Muay Thai for a while in New Zealand, was very happy to continue her passion at Bali Training Centre when she moved to Uluwatu. Jake was lucky to find his sidekick, Dodge and his hidden talent that has flourished under Jake’s assistance. Dodge, in a short period of time has become skillful in holding pads, which
isn’t something easy to do especially when it comes to pad holding for people with proper Muay Thai skills. When asked about future plans, Jake is planning on having a proper ring built, adding something new such as yoga classes, events and continue growing the community to train and inspire. Bali Training Center is located on Jl Bingin, very close to Uluwatu’s most popular joints and only walking distance to the beach. Equipped with decent heavy bags, good quality boxing gloves and pads, a few sets of dumbbells, battle ropes as well as skipping ropes in their semi open training area with quite a spacious outdoor grass area. Only a few steps away is the Cashew Tree restaurant serving everything fresh and healthy, from cold press juices to power breakfasts – there’s nothing better than heading out for a healthy refuel after a solid training session!
