SCOOP Air Festival Bali Edition Our island of Bali will be the temporary new home for the coveted Air Festival! After news about the renovations that are taking place on the original home of the festival, Gili Air. The Air Festival team were forced to make a quick decision and have come up with an equally magical place. Welcoming the Bali Edition at La Brisa held on March 30, 31 and April 1st. Some of you may have already stepped foot on the eco beach club on Echo Beach but for those that haven’t, La Brisa was built using the reclaimed wood from more than 500 old fisherman boats, was beautifully decorated and fits perfectly with the Air Festival vibe. La Brisa will expand to take over the northern half of the beach area as well as showcase some until-now hidden property. International artists like Fred P, Rampa, Makam, Bas Ibelini and local heroes like Walker Barnard, Tiago Oudeman and Trigan Young will be making waves throughout the three days. Not to mention the live music, slow and organic beats, transformational workshops, yoga and the legendary surf out the front.

OMNIA DAYCLUB
opens

FEATURE
OMNIA Dayclub opens softly and in the process, Bali’s day/nightlife scene just went up a notch. The Las Vegas entertainment and dining group Hakkasan, who are known for the high-end OMNIA nightclub which opened in Vegas in 2015 and other hospitality outlets worldwide, have opened the ultimate, outdoor club venue on Bali’s southern coastal cliffs. The expansive, beautifully finished outdoor venue has a number of intelligently conceived features such as the floating main bar positioned off the cliff edge and accessed by a small bridge, with sleek timber furnishings and stainless steel details creating a breathtaking space that could be one of the world’s finest. The rather large crystal cube on top of the bar is made from thousands of large glass beads, back lit by an LED lighting system which will eventually illuminate the sky at dusk, basically creating its own sunset effect. That lighting system will launched very soon. We were at OMNIA to experience their first day of operations. The staff have been prepared daily over the past months. According to Hugo, head marketing and conceptor with Hakkasan, specialist trainers were brought in from Las Vegas to train the staff to their high standards. “We could have opened earlier than this, we were ready, but we decided the staff were not yet prepared so we brought in the trainers from Las Vegas,” Hugo told ST. This would appear to have been a good decision as the young, wellpresented staff were right on point, from the greeting, serving, staying at a distance, and even paying the bill―seamless and without fuss. The OMNIA trainers should take a bow.
OMNIA is built for a large crowd, and we are told there will be some big events coming soon, but also it has enough intimate spaces to keep a smaller amount of guests entertained. A sunken swim-up pool area to the left is like a secluded club of its own, the elegant blue and white day beds and sofas overlooking the main pool are ideal for hanging out in the sun or partying with friends. There are other booths and sofas dotted here and there, all creating their own intimate worlds. The main Japanese restaurant Sake no Hana overlooks the dayclub with its Zen styling and what they call ‘shun’ Japanese cuisine; ‘shun’ meaning the moment of perfection when everything is at its peak. A term which could well describe the whole OMNIA and Sake no Hana experience. While speaking with Hugo in the space in front of the DJ booth, I noticed we were standing in the middle of the main dance floor, I spun around and could well imagine, sometime in the near future, hundreds of happy, stylish people dancing on that very spot with a major international DJ in the booth. We look forward to that day, which we are told is going to be in April when OMNIA has slated to hold their grand opening. OMNIA is opening softly for the first couple of weeks from 11am to 7pm. It will be opening till later in the evening soon. Sake no Hana restaurant is open already till late – 11am to 11pm. Make sure you take a look at this architectural and entertainment marvel soon, it’s sure to take your breath away. Reservations: +62 (0) 361 8482 150. www.thebeatbali.com

RESIDENT This week we are talking LIVE to one of the great, all time resident DJs of the island, James Hendrik.
them, gotta have friends get it from abroad, no online shopping for sure back then. What kind of music were you playing at the time? And how was the nightlife scene? From reggae to soul, acid jazz, classic disco, house to progressive trance, nightlife was great because the clubs already had their own genre, music was more with analog systems so, better quality all round. Yes everything was a little more analogue back in those days including decor, lighting and people. What was your favorite place to hang out late back then? 66 for sure.
He’s originally from Timor NTT and has been on the island since 1995 and been a resident DJ on Bali since 1999. Some of you may recall him spinning his wares in The Hard Rock Cafe Bali or Klapa, and more recently at the super popular Mirror nightclub in Petitenget. But I bet you didn’t know he started back in places like Number One in Sanur, Goa 2000, Nikko Hotel and his own BOA Jazz Club in Dhyana Pura. So anyway, we have him live with us right now for this week’s Resident DJ Interview - going live.... We start by asking him what got him into DJing back 1999? Wow, thanks for going live, I guess DJing felt kinda cool back then. How did you get involved in it? With whom? Started playing on CDBS radio, my mentor back then was the awesome Jonny Satrio. Yes DJ Jonny ruled the waves back in those days. What was the music scene like back in those days? Was it hard to get new tracks? Whoah, yeah it was difficult, we all played vinyl back then and it was hard to get my hands on

Club music appears to have changed a lot over the years. How do you think it has changed and do you think it has changed for the better? Surely it has changed, but the base is the same, it’s all a matter of taste. For some yes its better, but the ones not to my taste I say NAY So that brings us to you now, the 2018 version. You’re the resident main man at Mirror Bali. Mirror seems to have had a few changes of music direction over the three years it has been around. Where is the music at right now? Yes it has, like I said before my taste never changed, but at the end of the day the crowd also defines the business. Mirror has different days for each genre, so we bring the best tunes for each genre to everyone. What’s the best and worst thing about being a resident DJ? The best part is when you have a full house and they are a “musically educated” crowd so they get your set, well the worst is basically the opposite. Ok thanks for joining us LIVE for a chat. Any shout out before you go? No worries, pleasure is mine, come down to Mirror this wednesday for some underground sound! See ya!

The Beat CafE’s New Head Cook The newest addition to The Beat Cafe family is Head Chef Lukman Santoso. The Cafe’s take on international street food fits his profile perfectly as he has been cooking for a number of different restaurants and warungs around the island and Java. Starting his cooking career in Malang over a decade ago, Lukman first landed a job in Bali at Khaima in 2008 and slowly moved his way through restaurants around the island like Black Stone, Fullmoon Café and B.O.B until eventually finding his home in Petitenget. We are really excited to have him on board and you should get down soon to saviour the mouth-watering creations he has in store!
Dialog opens in Petitenget A classy but small Indonesian restaurant called Dialog has recently opened on the backstreets of Jalan Oberoi. Dialog offers seasonal and creative twists of popular Indonesian dishes that will have you coming back for more. The restaurant itself has a stylish yet casual atmosphere and encompasses reasonably priced meals that won’t break your budget. Running the kitchen is a young Balinese chef by the name of Echo, and with his team, has enhanced dishes like the “Nasi Besek” and “Rendang” and given them international twists. Open from 12 am to 11 pm, this spot has a lot of potential but keep in mind there isn’t much parking.

The Spicery Deli & Bistro

FOOD
Lunch at The Spicery Deli & Bistro was somewhat unforgettable. Opened in October 2016, the airconditioned space is divided into two sections. The Deli section offers a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, spices, cold cuts, dry produce, meats, coffee, a wine selection and more. The restaurant section is quite a cozy setting with friendly and attentive staff including manager, Pia and two star Michelin executive Chef Dean James Fischer. At a glance, the menu is filled with a wide variety of both Indonesian and continental dishes to choose from. I loved the variety of beverages they have like the Balinese organic juices, healthy boosters, healthy shots and a selection of milkshakes, yum! A healthy breakfast menu is also available at The Spicery – while I didn’t get to try any of those, I did however have an amazing dining experience. We started off with Indonesian classics, Nasi goreng and Ayam chicken satay from their Eat Asian menu and Ayam kuning Balinese yellow chicken curry from their Taste Curry menu. The set was delicious and I especially loved the curry! A sip of the happy sippp Martini was a perfect choice to…. neutralize? We’re told that happy hour, buy one get one cocktail free is happening everyday from 6-7pm and amongst the list I’d recommend Sue Lee 69 for a refreshing kick! Brought to our table next was a large Sombrero nachos which I couldn’t get enough of, a tray full of goodness and pretty darn good looking guacamole! You can order a regular size for only
IDR 69K. Also served with that was a Havana Club chicken burrito with grilled chicken, red beans, guacamole, tomato salsa and sour cream - which was simply delicious. Chef Dean was creating the magic and another set of meals was served – and though we were pretty full, we couldn’t resist. The special set consisted of beautifully served Hiroshima Tataki – a beautiful combination of salmon and mango salsa which was delicious and fresh, the Fat Budha Pork Knuckle was an absolutely phenomenal piece of juicy and tender meat with a flavorsome sauce to match. The Exotic Chia Chia was the sweet finish to it all, the chia pudding and tropical fruits were exactly what we needed. The three are from their new Moonshine dinner menu, yes - they are now serving dinner! Starting February 2018, The Spicery will be open from 7am – 11pm on weekdays and 7am – midnight on weekends. Try the Spicery Saturday night party, from 6pm till late for a night full of fun entertainment such as wine tasting, small beer Bintangs for IDR 20K ++, a glass of wine for IDR 50K++, live acoustic, Balinese dance performance and a fire dance you wouldn’t want to miss! The Bloody Peachtini (125K), a fresh, peachy piece of perfection, recommended by the F Bar barman, Dewa. Shaken, not stirred, it mixes vodka with orange juice, bloody orange syrup and peach liqueur. Smooth and sweet, Dewa would say that it’s a glass of happiness everyone will love. CD REVIEW
7/10 Country & Northern
Ruins
First Aid Kit “They’re sisters, they’re from Sweden, they were born at the height of the hippie era in the Sixties, and they’ve just finished a massive tour with The Eagles”, announces an orange man in a velour jacket at the beginning of First Aid Kit’s video clip to the utterly, utterly gorgeous “Nothing Has to be True”. The thing is, that’s only 50% true. First Aid Kit are sisters (Klara [vocals/guitar] and Johanna Söderberg [vocals / keyboards / Autoharp / bass guitar]), and they are from Sweden (Stockholm), but as for being around in the 60s… Not even close. So is this a bad thing? Purists may cry “YES” (how could two straightlaced 90s kids possibly ‘get’ the Swingin’ Sixties?), but if you’re any kind of fan of folky Americana à la Neil Young, Mamas & Papas, Carole King, then absolutely not. It’s brilliant, because as most people would agree on these days, alllllll the music has been done and there are basically no new places to go, so why not take old formulas like this and polish them up for millennial audiences?
The soundscapes are lusher, the production values are better (thanks technology!), and the very fact that Ruins is the Söderberg sisters’ fourth studio album is testament to how popular the genre can be when done right. Songs like “Postcard”, with its country lilt and Gram Parsons piana, or the wide-eyed “Distant Star” are near flawless examples of how to inject originality into a done-to-death era. Retro gimmicks aside, the real key to Ruins success is the sister’s vocals; both full of character and genuine empathy – kind of like a softer Janis Joplin but with the bonus of some wonderfully layered harmonies. Admittedly it would be nice to hear the raw end of that more often (check out the rousing “Hem of Her Dress” where they both seem to be releasing some demons), but really there’s very little to criticize here – Ruins is compellingly wonderful at pretty much every turn. Now – February 27 Monkey Forest Gallery “Under the Sun” is a solo exhibition by Wayan Januariawan. A Balinese artist from Ubud who works in the open air, the artist often works on his paintings in the vicinity of Ubud. His displayed works at Monkey Forest Gallery result from his fascination with the Balinese nature as he is very passionate about the combination of colors and sunlight on the leaves of lush tropical trees and flowers. These works have one core concern in common which is the idea of a natural connection between wildlife and the sun. For him, sun gives hope, light and purification. Therefore, the sun plays an extremely important role in his current works. Monkey Forest Gallery, Jl. Monkey Forest, Ubud.

ART
The Dynamic Heritage Now – February 28 Griya Art Gallery
Griya Art Gallery presents “The Dynamic Heritage”, a group exhibition that showcases the creative achievements of twelve Batuan painters from various generations. Batuan painters have developed a classic style of painting which has become distinctly their own uniqueness. Since the 20s, supplemented with new materials, new techniques and divergent sources of inspiration, they eagerly explore the field of art and enthusiastically express their own innate beliefs into a secular world, visualized in their completely unique style. These twelve artists show different levels of creative tendency, both from thematic and artistic perspective, but confined to the basic art techniques of the existing Batuan style. They attempt to bring in their own personal and particular style, while still remaining true to Batuan communal art dialect. The exhibited works show Batuan style, both in terms of technique and esthetic, as a ‘language’ to describe the many issues encountered by people today from those related to nature, political noise, to personal expression. | Griya Art Gallery, Griya Santrian, Jl. Danau Tamblingan 47, Sanur

ART
Wayan Januariawan Born and bred in Ubud, Wayan Januariawan stated that he has known arts as far as he can remember. As a kid, he started his journey by painting traditional works which he could use to earn his own money. Today, he is still active in the world of painting, known mostly for his on-the-spot works. Embodying the colors of nature, his works are all about the beauty of the island, represented through the plays of form, shade and light. His beautiful works can now be viewed at Monkey Forest Gallery until February 27. What do you say about your style? Many people say that my style is impressionist, just like the one that was developed in France in 1870. The final results might seem impressionist, but in my opinion, I just try to create the paintings which could portray the closest conditions of the real objects. As I chase the light, the final results couldn’t be that perfect; it’s just the impressions that are close. The scratches are not too fine as they come out of spontaneity. I believe that you also have experience of painting on-the-spot. Tell us about it. There are many interesting experiences when I paint outdoor. First of all, I could be in touch with my surroundings. When I was painting at a traditional market, there were always people who came to see my process and give me their critical views. When I was painting at a tourist attraction, I always felt that I was part of that attraction itself.
the view of a bright morning, it could just turn to be the gloom when the rain pours down. However, for the painting itself, I always enjoy the process. What are you trying to convey through your works? Compared with other conceptual exhibitions, I just want to express simple things about nature to all art connoisseurs. For example, the beauty of sunshine that touches the leaves. If these paintings are exhibited in the city, somehow, it would be a turning point. The audiences could see and feel the felicity of living in a village, unlike the feeling of living the city life. This could be a visual language which broadcasts the ‘rural news’ to the urban. On the other hand, there are also the social critics. It’s not about opposing the reality, but giving new options for the audiences. It would be better if these works can convey positive messages.
What are some of the challenges to paint on-the-spot? Normally, the challenges are the circumstances in the nature itself. The rain, for instance. From the initial plan of painting www.thebeatbali.com

SPA
The Vie Spa They have a good selection of treatments to get your body ready for your entire holiday! The Vie Spa Jl. Nakula 168X, Kuta T. 847 5689/847 5690
LOOK Located on a strategic location near Kuta’s hotels and villas, The Vie Spa is a great place for those who are looking for a bit of pampering during their Bali holidays. The spa offers five couple rooms with bath tubs and showers, as well as a dedicated area which is equipped with four reflexology chairs. Bringing indoors Bali’s nature, the interior is dominated with green, complete with a traditional touches from the hand-carved furniture. FEEL What we enjoyed on our visit to this spa was their “Balinese Massage” (375k), a full-body, deep-tissue and holistic treatment, which is based on local massage tradition. Prepping us for the massage, the treatment began with a ritual foot bath. Laid on the massage bed, our therapist then started the massage, using the scented oil which had been chosen prior to the treatment. The massage itself used a variety of techniques, including short and firm strokes, added with the thumbs on pressure points which worked along the meridian. Our therapist also applied quite deep pressure
during the massage in order to work on the muscle knots. However, the pressure was easily customizable as it could be tailored to our wishes. The treatment was done after 60 minutes, helping us to feel calm and boosted. INGREDIENTS The Vie Spa offers two essential oils for this treatment which are the Coconut Oil and Lavender Oil. The first option is great to soothe and relax tight muscles in your body, whereas the latter is used to eliminate nervous tension, relieve pain, enhance blood circulation and treat respiratory problems. MAGIC With their natural products and professionallytrained therapists, your satisfaction here is guaranteed. Their menu is thoughtfullycurated, consisting of various treatments to make your body, mind and soul feel totally relax and fresh. That’s not to mention their strategic location which is accessible from almost everywhere; meaning that you will have less trouble to find this spa. www.thebeatbali.com
