Let the blue skies continue shining! After one of the worse wet seasons in years we are glad to report the weather is getting a lot drier and with Nyepi (The Day of Silence) not far away I think we can now expect it to get better and better. Nyepi is known to often be the time when the dry season kicks in along with the brand new Balinese year. But I am getting ahead of myself….that’s still a few weeks away. This week’s events are not particularly plentiful but there are some good ones. Check Andrew Rayal at Mirror, Kim Ann Foxmann at Jenja, Steve Void at Envie Lounge, a whole bunch of quality DJs at Sky Garden and Café Mambo starts a residency at Mulia. As we do get closer to Nyepi, invariably things begin to slow down but this year that may not be the case. US singers Fifth Harmony will be playing live at Sky Garden on Saturday March 10. If you don’t know their name, you surely know their music as it has been played regularly in just about every R&B club for the last ten years. Also Rampa will be spinning at Woobar the Thursday night before Nyepi. More about that next edition. Meanwhile, enjoy the Bali nightlife and keep up to date with the latest on www.thebeatbali.com

ONE ISLAND ONE VOICE JOINT CAMPAIGN FOR A STOP OF MARINE DEBRIS POLLUTION One Island One Voice campaign is slated again to carry out an island clean-up action in Bali on February 24. The campaign has, since 2015, continued to conduct socialization and provide education in an attempt to raise public awareness of addressing the waste problems. Following the their success last year, this year’s campaign sees them expand and cover every region across the island, including coastlines, rivers, villages and public spaces. As a form of concrete action and cooperation of every level of the society, this campaign doesn’t only involve the people of Bali, but also all parties like companies and communities to help solve the waste problems as soon as possible. It has also seen that the government has had a commitment to addressing the plastic waste problems, realizing the fact that Indonesia is now the second highest contributor to the marine debris. RED CARPET LATE Saturday night, seven nights a week!

52

www.thebeatbali.com

Red Carpet Late is a new, stylish club above the ever popular Red Carpet Champagnebar in Seminyak. We spoke to the team and got some comments from manager John about the new venue and what it’s all about. So John, what’s Late club all about in a hundred words? Late was started because we, our guests and friends were missing a place to dance with proper music, where artists sing, there’s a beginning and an end to the song, it’s recognizable, and not boom boom boom. We wanted a place where you get good service, cold towels, great waitresses, canapés, free water and good honest alcohol. Late has a great sound system and you feel protected from mafia-like security, dodgy bar staff, with valet parking and so on. So we created this magic wonderland that’s 100% modern but reminds you of the vintage clubs in Paris and Berlin. So what kind of people is Late for? Civilised people from 25 years plus that want to dance to great music, and feel happy and safe in a fun place with like-minded people. Is the club an extension of the very popular Red Carpet and its crowd? The ‘Red Carpet Champagnebar’s guests were asking for a new late night spot with a higher service level. And they kept asking us because they knew that we are one of the few institutions that has been giving service and quality for so many years. It’s in our DNA. Also in the ‘Red Carpet Late’ we do our best to make you feel like a star. Red Carpet was voted best new comer and Best Bar in Bali in 2017 because our team is really on it every day. Most other places cost millions but they forget that it’s the guest that has to be happy. Tell me about the design of the venue. You were saying how it’s totally soundproof. And take us for a walk around the place. What are some of the highlights design-wise? First thing you notice when you enter Late is the fact that you can oversee the whole space from wherever you’re seated. The dance floor with ‘Saturday Night Fever’ lights in the floor and its signature huge mirror ball with light from inside and out. The unique iron designed deco tables to sit at while you drink and chat. The computer controlled light system, which allows us to control every lamp in the club from our telephones. The custom built

sound system with drivers from Finland and digital amplifiers from England, so you can still have a conversation without shouting. Our pole dance pole where every night we find girls swinging around. We have a stage, where we organize shows and every Thursday we do a Magician show. We created booths where you can sit with up to 14 people, so you have privacy, but still part of the fun. No fabrics used (except in the maid’s uniforms of our beautiful waitresses), cushions are real leather and curtains are bronze. Then over in the two bars, we have the biggest collection of wine and champagne in Asia. The whole club is built following the ‘Box in a Box’ principle. No screw or drill has been used to make it, just glue and rubber. The club can actually move independently from the main building. That’s why we can play the beats till late and still be friends with our neighbours. Also it’s one of the few places that’s open seven days a week. This is Bali!! Every day there are people wanting to dance. When you are on holiday there is no such thing as Monday, it’s Saturday every night! Saturday night seven nights a week! I must admit, Late has a very stylish decor. I especially like the cozy and comfortable booths with their chain curtains. How about the drinks, anything new on offer? Drinks are all made from good quality alcohol, most spirits and wines are imported and served with personal coolers. The decor is inspired by the 1920’s Moulin Rouge in Paris but also by 1001 Nights with thousands of rubies and other jewels. Totally over the top, but we wanted you to get a smile on your face when entering the club. What’s the capacity of Late? Is there a cover charge and what are the opening hours? We can fit in around 175 people. To have a little bit of selection at the door, and to avoid guests using our facilities, towels, snacks, water and so on without ordering, we now ask them to buy a drink voucher of Rp100k at the door that they can use in the club. Are you having any events in the near future? We’ll be starting with ‘Hospitality Mondays’ where everyone working in hotels or F&B can get a 20% discount and we’ll also be having live music. Every Thursday we are doing a Magic show on stage. They start around 12 midnight.

FINNS NEW FRESH SUSHI Finns Beach Club has recently opened their new Sushi Bar on the sunny beach of Berawa. They have created the perfect team and menu to make the most of the island’s fresh seafood. With over 15 years of experience in Japanese cuisine, the new chef in the kitchen is no stranger to sashimi, sushi or tempura. Unlike many sushi restaurants, the menu doesn’t offer pages and pages of options to pour over, but a succinct selection of thoughtfully crafted dishes. Starters include Japanese favorites like gyoza, yakitori, edamame and the must-try Uzusukuri, a Carpaccio styled white fish with delicately infused truffle ponzu sauce and home-made wasabi. The signature rolls are almost too pretty to eat, however with one taste of the Dragon Roll you’ll have no control and you’ll be wishing you had room for more. If you thought things couldn’t get better, order yourself a Sake and a bento box and enjoy the views from your sun bed. Can you think of a better way to spend your day?

I don’t take a rare sunny day in a rainy season like this for granted, so when the sunny day finally happened after weeks of constant rain, I only wanted to spend it outdoors. Nowhere I’d rather be spending the most awaited perfect day than at Woo Bar, the fabulous beach side bar at the luxurious W Retreat Bali. I started things right with a refreshing glass of eye candy, my most favorite cocktail while enjoying the breezy air by the pool with an unbeatable cozy atmosphere and a great music play list. I opted for a light lunch easily enjoyed by the pool, and start with a refreshing Pomelo salad before the ever delicious Smoked paprika ribs arrived—the perfectly tender pork ribs were so delicious! My sweet & spicy chicken wings arrived next, seasoned with sweet soy glaze, sesame seeds, coriander and lime – simply tasty and delicious, I could easily have two but again, I’d rather fill up on more eye candy (or two) on a day like this. Woo Bar has its resident and international DJs spinning beats on WooDeck daily, perfect beats to every perfect day on the island. Spend your magical sunset session with the sweet deals of buy one get one free on a selection of fabulous cocktails on Monday–Thursday 4-6pm or buy a selected bottle and have the second one free. Want to upgrade your drinks? Pay only IDR 55K to upgrade your single to double on select spirits! If you fancy a healthier drink option, Woo Bar also has a wide selection of healthy & fresh drinks – try their Drink, Pray, Love.. beet root, tangerine and lime juice combined with some tequila, pistachio and honey water—simply refreshing. If you spend the day with your little ones, Woo Bar also has its kids meal selection on the menu

such as Spaghetti, Mozzarella cheese pizza, banana split and more. Situated at W Retreat Bali, Woo Bar is open daily from 10am till late with complimentary pool access—the perfect place to spend your perfect day.

What Do You Recommend, KOPI POT BALI TACO

CHEF?

Chef: Agung Sukerta

Kopi Pot is a nice place if you need a bit of laidback ambience to chill in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Legian. Add that with their menu, it is also a great dining destination to be added to your favorite’s list. Having led Kopi Pot’s kitchen for a very long time, their chef, Agung Sukerta, knows best what to offer to their visitors, presenting an array of western dishes which have been infused with some Balinese elements. One of them is the Bali Taco (57k), the crunchy and messy snack which features homemade tortillas, ground beef, sliced onion, grated cheese and veggies with mayo, topped with fresh local avocado. The flavors of Bali come alive in this dish, with the spicy sambal served on the side as a condiment, sure to give some kick to your palate. For the vegetarians, you have no worries as the chef has been thinking of you too, with red beans in exchange for meat, so it can be very tasty option for you, as well!

8/10 NEIL YOUNG & PROMISE OF THE REAL The Visitor The release earlier this year of Neil Young’s greatest lost 1976 album Hitchhiker, plus the recent opening up of his archives online, only served to prove just how brilliant his offcuts could be. His output for the past ten years has been more problematic, though: hastilyrecorded songs about cars, ecology and evil corporations having often diluted his potency. To hear him rant more like a determined street shouter with a Noah complex (“move those animals outta here” he sings) over the driving rock of Fly By Night Deal, two tracks into his 39th studio album, you’d expect we’re in for more of the same. But The Visitor proves to be Young’s most interesting and varied work in some time, slotting somewhere in-between 2005’s acoustic Prairie Wind and the following year’s US government-thumping rocker Living With War.

melodies. From his rousing response to Trump’s catchphrase in “Already Great” to the lovely sigh of contemplation that is “Almost Always”, in which he seems to compare himself to a “crazy little bird calling out his song/Standing out on a limb almost too long”. The closing 10-minute-long acoustic reverie “Forever” is equally beautiful, as Young sadly walks round our damaged world, treading carefully so as not to destroy any more of it. Overall, The Visitor is still mad and messy in places. But then, what’s new? Neil Young has now been doing whatever the hell he likes for almost half a century. We’re always following him down a bumpy road but that’s all part of the fun. Dan Ashcroft

As the best record of the three he’s recorded with his new and far younger band Promise of the Real, it veers between raw fury and tender

EXHIBITIONS ON NOW

Send your art exhibition info to art@beatmag.com

Now – February 24 Deus Gallery

Now – February 25 Titian Art Space

Deus Gallery is back to present its latest exhibition by Australiaborn artist, David Eagles, titled “Chaotic in Nature”. The artist’s creativity is fuelled by the chaotic nature of Indonesia’s cities, from street venders, to amusement parks, rural and urban living contrast each other in close proximity. A landscape where the traditions of the ancient Majapahit Empire are still practiced, overlaid with modern street graffiti. His observation on what makes Indonesia unique is the idea that it is a land where heaven and hell seem to have been pushed closer together than in the west, and as a result the energies of both flow proportionately throughout the cities and the land. Having worked in surf and street print design since 1987, he combines traditional painting with photography, digital print and screen print, and is not shy around a spray can. 10% of the sale of his art will later be donated to Keep Bali Clean, an environmental campaign focused on reducing litter in Bali. Deus Gallery, Deus Ex Machina, Jl. Batu Mejan 8, Canggu.

The exhibition marks the second anniversary of Yayasan Titian Bali, presenting the works by nine finalists of its annual Titian Prize. The exhibiting artists are Ketut Suwidiarta, Nyoman Ari Winata, Gede Suryawan Eka Putra, Wayan Aris Sarmanta, Kadek Yuliantono, Made Suartama, Wayan Eka Mahardika Suamba, Made Wahyu Senayadi and Ida Bagus Suryantara. Titian Art Space, Jl. Bisma No. 88, Ubud.

Now – February 27 Monkey Forest Gallery “Under the Sun” is a solo exhibition by Wayan Januariawan. A Balinese artist from Ubud who works in the open air, the artist often works on his paintings in the vicinity of Ubud. His displayed works at Monkey Forest Gallery result from his fascination with the Balinese nature as he is very passionate about the combination of colors and sunlight on the leaves of lush tropical trees and flowers. These works have one core concern in common which is the idea of a natural connection between wildlife and the sun. For him, sun gives hope, light and purification. Therefore, the sun plays an extremely important role in his current works. Monkey Forest Gallery, Jl. Monkey Forest, Ubud.

Now – February 28 Griya Art Gallery Griya Art Gallery presents “The Dynamic Heritage”, a group exhibition that showcases the creative achievements of twelve Batuan painters from various generations. Batuan painters have developed a classic style of painting which has become distinctly their own. Since the 20s, supplemented with new materials, new techniques and divergent sources of inspiration, they eagerly explore the field of art and enthusiastically express their own innate beliefs into a secular world, visualized in their completely unique style. These twelve artists show different levels of creative tendency, both from thematic and artistic perspective, but confined to the basic art techniques of the existing Batuan style. They attempt to bring their own personal and particular style, while still remaining true to Batuan communal art dialect. The exhibited works show Batuan style, both in terms of technique and esthetic, as a ‘language’ to describe the many issues encountered by people today from those related to nature, political noise, to personal expression. Griya Art Gallery, Griya Santrian, Jl. Danau Tamblingan 47, Sanur.

ART

Dual Painting Exhibitions by Korean Artists Now – February 28 Tonyraka Art Gallery

Tonyraka Art Gallery currently presents two simultaneous painting exhibitions by two Korean artists; “Always”, a solo painting exhibition by Yang Mikyeong, and “Suddenly”, a solo painting exhibition by Jung Yongsung. Both lives in Jeju, a volcanic island off the coast of the Korean Peninsula, known widely for its beautiful natural landscape, as well as its dark history of atrocities in the wake of World War II. Their works are inspired by the nature and the people of their island of birth. In her paintings, Mikyeong captures the sensation of internal forces and rhythm, animating ordinary and mundane appearance where lines flow and colors drift. Meanwhile, Yongsung works in a painstakingly detailed manner, with reduced coloration echoing the mystery and the misery of man and nature. | Tonyraka Art Gallery, Jl. Raya Mas No. 86, Ubud

Mask & Dance Exhibition February 25 – March 3 Bentara Budaya Bali “Mask & Dance Exhibition” this time marks a series of programs to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Bentara Budaya Bali, featuring mask artist, Samadi, and dance maestro, Ni Luh Menek. Samadi is a mask artist, hailing from the village of Bobung in Yogyakarta. Having been creating masks since his early years, he is now more engaged in the manufacturing of classic masks, including the masks for Wayan Topeng. Meanwhile, Ni Luh Menek is a Balinese dance maestro who has devoted her entire life to dance. She is also the figure who managed to make the village of Tejakula an icon identical to the dance she performs. | Bentara Budaya Bali, Bypass Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra, Sukawati www.thebeatbali.com

ART

Wayan Aris Sarmanta The young and emerging artist, Wayan Aris Sarmanta, has many things to share about life through his works. Born and bred in Batuan, he presents his dreams and imaginings through vibrant details and bright colors, painted in the traditional Batuan style which has been given some contemporary touches, setting his works to be extraordinary. With his own strong characteristics, it’s a no wonder he was just awarded the Titian Prize 2018, an acknowledgement which is given to promising Balinese artists. His works are now displayed at Titian Art Gallery until February 25 and Griya Art Gallery until February 28. How did you become an artist? My initial interest in art, especially in painting, was when I saw my grandfather’s paintings. Seeing I had some talent, my grandfather taught me to paint in the Batuan style. For my formal education, I attended High School of Arts in Sukawati. I then continued my studies at the Institute of Teacher Training and Education PGRI in Denpasar, majoring in art education. You are working on a traditional style. Is there any modern twist invested in your works? The modern touch in my work is evident from the use of modern and contemporary coloring techniques which are bright and flat. The characteristics of your paintings? My paintings are all in the Batuan style, with some developments through contemporary coloring techniques. Besides the colors, my works are also surreal, inspired by dreams and imagination. Your work won the Titian Prize 2018 recently. What is that all about? The work I presented portrayed a family portrait which consists of a father, a mother and a child. Here, I visualize the mountain

as the father and the hill as the child, while the mother is visualized by the lake and the cliff. In this work, we can see a father and a mother dive into the lake and fight for the sake of their child, while on the lotus flower, sits a figure which represents the god of all children. In the lake, we can also see that there are many lotuses and fish. In a nutshell, this work reminds us about mother nature and its contents; the humans, animals and plants which need one another. How about your work displayed in Griya Santrian Art? This work is about how the lifestyle changes with the change of time. Lifestyle, ways of thinking and others have affected people’s lives nowadays. I visualize it through our daily activity which is bathing. In the past, boys and men were happy enough to bathe in the river without being embarrassed. Now, everything has changed as the technology has become sophisticated. People’s ways of thinking have changed, defeated by prestige. Not only women, men also often show off their wealth and luxury lifestyle. Here, it’s portrayed by the figure who enjoys his life by bathing in a bathtub.

SPA

THE SPA

Despite its simplicity, this spa is a real hidden gem in Legian The Spa The ONE Legian, Jl. Legian No. 117, Badung T. 300 1101

LOOK An integral part of The ONE Legian, The Spa is designed for savvy travelers who are in need of some serious pampering. Set in a quiet nook of the hotel, this spa makes smart use of its space, housing three couple rooms and two single rooms. The spa is clean, comfortable and well-organized, and features dimmed lighting that helps to bring serenity to your spa experience. FEEL Among their interesting packages, we were tempted enough to try “The Art of Surrender (300k), a signature package which was meant to let us surrender completely to a blissful relaxation. The treatment began with a Balinese massage, using warm coconut oil which was very comforting, incorporated with stretching and acupressure along the meridian. Carried out deeply, yet gently, through the deft hands of our therapist, the massage was able to put us in a deeply relaxed state as it soothed our knotted muscles, while stimulating the blood circulation. After 60 minutes, the treatment then continued with a body scrub. What we loved from this part was that it used a specially-formulated scrub, feeling soft and smooth as it touched our skin. Our treatment ended with a 30-minute mini facial, using selected products which are made

from the essentials of seaweed to hydrate our face. After two hours, the result was not only an invigorated body and mind, but also a glowing face which got us ready to face the rest of the day. INGREDIENTS The treatment uses coconut oil which brings some benefits for your skin, including protecting it from drying and cracking, as well as keeping it rejuvenated, young and healthy. Meanwhile, the scrubbing utilizes pure coconut scrub which is not only good to boost circulation and relax the body, but also great to treat sunburn and hydrate skin, making it perfect for those with sensitive skin. MAGIC There are so many charms hidden behind the simplicity The Spa. Once stepping into this small yet cozy spa, you will be welcomed warmly by the staff, creating a nice start to your pampering experience. Prior to the treatment, your experience will always begin with a consultation session with your therapist to let them know about the condition of your body, how you want to be treated and what products you prefer, targeting your immediate needs. Complete it with their treatments and packages, we would say that this spa is one of the best you could find in Legian. www.thebeatbali.com
