Hi folks, it’s a great time to be on the island of Bali, and in fact, one of the best times of the year here, because Nyepi is coming soon. The first time I came across Nyepi, I didn’t really understand it and thought it was such a waste of time, but after a while I began to really appreciate it for what it is, a time of self-reflection before the Balinese New Year begins. It is 24 hours of subdued lifestyle, without electricity, no fires or lights, calm thoughts, not being allowed on the streets at all and the entire community having a day off. I even saw somewhere that the internet will be off this year, but don’t quote me on that. Nyepi is truly one of the great days of the island and is the cornerstone that makes Balinese culture as wonderful as it is. Get prepared and enjoy your Nyepi the best way you can. Don’t miss all the Ogoh-Ogoh paraded the night before on all the crossroads in your neighbourhood, too.

There are some good shows to catch before Nyepi arrives like Rampa at Woobar the night before, Thursday 15 March. The Mambo sunsets on Wednesdays at Mulia Bali, all the great EDM at Sky Dome and of course when into live music you can’t go past Rysohi and The Beat Café. Enjoy Nyepi however you decide to spend it and we will see you for the New Year and the new season that’s just about to kick off!

SCOOP SANUR VILLAGE FESTIVAL XIII The Sanur Village Festival or SVF is back in action with its 13-year running celebration being held in August 22 – 26 of 2018. The theme of this year’s festival will be “Mandala Giri”, interpreted as “mountain” and will illustrate the spirit of thought behind Mount Agung and the eruption that occurred in November 2017. As always, the anticipated week will be filled with all types of entertainment including art exhibitions, fashion shows, cultural bazaars, culinary challenges and tastings, yoga, sports activities and environmental awareness programs. Also highlighting the festival will be the international kite festival, an exotic jukung (traditional boat) festival and a Sanur Run. Most festivities will be focused on the Inna Grand Bali Beach Hotel area, with new activities being added to various venues around Sanur. If you’re into surfing or fishing, this year will also feature tournaments around the sublime coastal waters Sanur has to offer. Keep yourself updated on all things SVF through their website and Facebook!

BALI’S PIONEERING GIRL SURFER DIAH RAHAYU RE-SIGNS WITH RIP CURL

B

ali’s star female surfer, Diah Rahayu, has officially announced that she will re-sign with longtime sponsor Rip Curl Southeast Asia for another two years, ensuring women’s surfing will be represented at the highest level on her home island of Bali and beyond. The stylish surfer from Seminyak, who turns 24 this week, made the announcement on the anniversary of her professional surfing career, which began with Rip Curl 12 years before. When Diah started surfing on her home beaches of Seminyak at the age of 12, under the tutelage of her surfing father, the notion of a Balinese female surfer was practically unknown. Women in Bali did not feel the lineup was a space open to them and many Indonesian women still remain deterred from enjoying surfing’s many physical and mental health benefits for fear of their skin tanning a darker shade. Over the past 12 years, Diah has made it her mission to change that. Through her undeniable surfing talent and her unwavering determination, Diah has pioneered the most successful professional surfing career for a woman to date in Indonesia. In addition to competing at a high level and representing Rip Curl on The Search, it has been Diah’s passion to prove to women – and men – in Indonesia and Southeast Asia that surfing is a healthy and active lifestyle available to them, and to

show girls that “a strong woman is a beautiful woman.” Diah’s grace and skill riding waves, combined with her fun-loving and adventurous spirit, have made her one of the most recognizable faces in women’s surfing in Southeast Asia. She has won professional surfing events across the continent, graced the cover of national magazines and billboards, and grown into a beloved ambassador for the sport in Asia. From Bali to Thailand, Diah has taught countless women how to surf and served as a strong role model for girls, proving that they can achieve on par with boys. In between, she’s also made time to earn her university degree. As Diah likes to say, “Dreams are as real as you want them to be.” “Whether it’s been to compete at my highest level in surfing or to earn my degree, Rip Curl has always supported me to reach my goals,” Diah said. “I’ve spent half of my life surfing, traveling and learning alongside the crew at Rip Curl, and they will always be like family to me. I’m honored to continue serving as an ambassador for women’s surfing and women’s rights here in Bali and beyond.” Follow Diah on Instagram: @didiahrahayu Follow Rip Curl on Instagram: @ripcurlasia

Kareem Meet the man about town. Kareem has been conceptualizing his own flavor of techno parties since his arrival on the island. Currently the events director of the Lyd Group aka La Laguna, La Plancha, La Sicilia and most recently La Favela’s new underground space on the third floor, it is safe to say that he is bringing great new opportunities to the ravers among us. His latest venture is a festival called Moonlight that will be held on the 6 – 8th of April and is sure to keep the ball rolling for the ever-evolving nightlife scene in Bali. We wanted our readers to get to know Kareem and what he has planned for us in the near future. So without further ado we present a LIVE interview with Kareem (first on FB and now in print).. So Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came to be in Bali?

54

www.thebeatbali.com

Lol - like everyone. Came for a surf and got stuck. This was 2.5 yrs ago. Well I came from Berlin that time, it was December. Berlin was cold and dark as usual and so I kept postponing till I gave up on moving back. What were you doing before you got here and how did you get involved in electronic music? Was traveling and moving recently to Berlin as I said. got involved from the dance floor to getting connected with some cool DJs in Berlin that offered to teach me when I showed interest, then in Bali it got a little more serious. What were the connections you made first in Bali? It seems that you found the right places to be pretty fast... First week I found myself in Kuta and started booking my flight out. Then suddenly a recent good Balinese friend that I met in Dubai decided to connect me with all her family and friends here in Bali and so it began...

FEATURE ended up co-creating the festival with its crew and with some crew from Europe who are on top of some of the most hardcore festivals in Europe. So....got really big hopes for this one. The music and the artists booked already are some of the best in the underground scene and the art installations being prepared and the organisation is going in a very optimistic way. Wow that sounds awesome. Where is it going to be held? Yes yes, it’s gonna be awesome. Will be in three different venues, Sonar and BPM style. Venues are La Brisa Bali, La Laguna Bali and Bali Green Life. The first two venues are quite well known to everyone and are the coolest beach venues for me and the third one is in the middle of the rice paddies where we will be dancing till 9 am and maybe more. You have been involved with the La Plancha group and Jungle already for a while. How did that come about? Jungle. Well Agnese called me up and told me that we should start the party we had been talking about. So I brought my equipment and sound system that me and a buddy bought to start parties together and started playing techno in the middle of the rice paddies. Apparently we were so loud that everyone wanted to check out what was happening down there! First two months were the most fun seeing all the curious eyes coming down to check what’s happening. Then kept swinging from here to there till we started doing Clandestino with the la la group in the beautiful La Sicilia Bali which went really nuts so quickly as well and started moving around to other venues La Laguna Bali and La Favela Bali upstairs in Attika etc. Yeah I was there last weekend, pretty wild stuff. Love the sounds and the crowd! So that leads us onto your latest project Moonlight Festival, which will be happening on April 6 8. Tell us about that. Well, I just want to highlight that its totally not my venture. There is a crew who has been trying to get it out in the light for almost a year. We got connected with the crew with my partner Raluca while we were dancing in Vietnam at Epizode Festival which was epic by the way. So again from the dance floor we

And who are the DJs playing that we should look out for? Artists!! Man wait till they are here and cooking their magic...well the full line up for the event can be found online and on the cover ;) but for example Petre Inspirescu who is one of our headliners is one of the few artists which Ricardo Villalobos plays b2b with on festivals and in Ibiza ... music wise the festival is gonna be mad! Hey that sounds very cool. What have you got going on before then. Where can we catch you over the next couple of weeks? Next we got two big ones in La Laguna Bali. First will be this Saturday where we will be hosting one of Afro house legends Nikodemus. This you don’t want to miss. The one after will be on the 24th in La Laguna also where we will have a super cool underground artist from Berlin, a quality that plays often in Dekmantel festival which I see as one of the most successful underground festivals in Europe. Name will be released in two days. While Clandestino regular parties will only be communicated via messages between friends as we have been doing so ... Ok thanks for your time Kareem. We wish you all the best, see you on the dance floor! Thanks a lot guys :)) dance with you soon!

What Do You Recommend,

Barman? BART

Pineapple Jalapeno Margarita Barman: Arnold When you’re in Sanur and feeling the heat, head down to BART at ARTOTEL Sanur and find their barman, Arnold, as he knows what’s best to serve on these steaming days. One of his recommendations might be one of their newest additions, the Pineapple Jalapeno Margarita (98k) that boasts a nice hit of spice. According to him, this Margarita has a whole lot of flavors going on, and it is proven. It is just like a party in your mouth, showcasing a perfect blend of sweet, sour and spicy; a bit boozy and absolutely amazing. The jalapeno-infused tequila brings a kick of heat, while the lime and pineapple juices provide the sweet and sour elements which are so refreshing. Added with triple sec and mixed together, they form a nice balance. Meanwhile, the glass is also rimmed with salt which enhances all of the flavors in this cocktail, plus a slice of pineapple to sweeten your spicy sipping experience. It can’t be beat for this stifling heat!

TABLE8 THE MULIA NUSA DUA

O

ur lunch buffet at Table8 was by far the best Chinese buffet I’ve ever experienced and I’m not only talking about the various Cantonese & Szechuan food classics, everything involved from start to finish was one unbeatable feast and journey into Chinese cuisine. The minute you arrive in the restaurant, the whole resort athmospere shifts – I suddenly felt like I was in some kind of Chinese royal palace’s grand setting, especially since we started off our feast with quite an extraordinary way of drinking tea. Our exclusive Xuangxie tea served unlike any other – The Tea Master, with his exceptionally long spouted tea kettle performed quite an incredibly entertaining kung fu ritual while pouring hot water into the cup where a blended bundle of green tea, red tea and jazmine slowly flourishes into a flower as it bloomed – making a beautiful, subtle tea for me to enjoy. While the tea gave the experience a spectacular start, it took me a while to decide where to start with the food sections. Finally I opted to start filling up my plate with roasted pork and poached chicken as well as ordering sapo pork steak with ginger and spring onion

from the claypot section – simply tasty and delicious. I filled a plate with prawns and pork steak too and watched the chef in action at the live cooking station. The prawns with black pepper were amazing and the pork steak seasoned with ginger tasted refreshing and delicious. Feeling full at this point, I refused to give up – though I skipped a few sections such as the appetizer and noodles section, after all this next one was what we really went there for – yes, the dim sum section. Starting with my all time favorites such as Siew Mai, prawn dumplings, steamed chicken feet and steamed pork ribs which were finished in a second. I could already say that Table8 dim sums are not only tasty but made from the best quality ingredients. My new favorite was deep fried sweet potato sesame ball of which I couldn’t get enough. Though tempted to try all varieties of the great looking desserts and sorbets lined up, we were happy enough to end our journey with a mango pudding which was delicious with a refreshing frozen yoghurt topped with fresh fruit. With a capacity between 120 – 140 pax, Table8 offers a beautiful ambiance for authentic Szechuan and Cantonese cuisine dining for the whole family – not to mention their signature fortune toss of Yu Sheng and Traditional Nian Gao you would want to experience too. CD REVIEW

7/10 Dark side rockers

BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB Wrong Creatures

Seventeen years in, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (currently just the three members of Peter Hayes, Robert Been, Leah Shapiro) are still proudly wearing black on the outside because black is how they feel on the inside. Their 2002 debut B.R.M.C. was such a clear-cut encapsulation of who they were – leather clad, midnight-dwelling spooks – that further developments since have been deemed largely unnecessary. Fusing breakneck indie with flashes of golden age Oasis (the Gallaghers are inexplicable heroes of all BRMC members), the formula works, and works well. Never a tighter (or louder) three-piece will you hear – something I can personally attest to thanks to their one-nightonly gig at the now defunct Mantra way back in 2014. The mosh pit bruises and ringing in my ears did not subside for weeks.

This, their eighth long player finds Bad Seeds producer Nick Lannay at the wheel and their intensely distorted blueprint in rude health. As with most other BRMC albums, the pace does tend to wear off a touch as the album wears on. Lead single “Little Thing Gone Wild” is all over the place, and “Circus Bazooko” sounds like the (dead) Beatles on a ghost train. However, long term aficionados will enjoy the sinuous throb of King of Bones, while for those thinking of rejoining the party, the expansive voodoo rattle of Haunt shows the band’s mastery of (bad) mood has only matured with age. Now – March 11 Uma Seminyak Uma Seminyak currently hosts a photographic exhibition by Syafiudin Vifick titled “The Last Supper”. For this exhibition, the space is filled with four photo installations, showcasing various themes. The exhibition sees the photographer capture Bali with his camera for the past ten years, visiting places randomly, from the popular and happening spots, to the rural areas where no internet can even reach. Going deeper, this exhibition does not only show Bali as the heaven of the world’s tourism, but also what it is today through various perspectives. Uma Seminyak, Jl. Kayu Cendana 1, Seminyak.

Now – March 19 The Oberoi Bali A series of works by Putu Wirantawan is now displayed at The Oberoi Bali in an exhibition entitled “The Richness of Emptiness”. Sunrays, water, fire, burning incense or cigarettes that bring forth smoke, ash, dust, coarse and fine messages, and the ripples are among the everyday objects and events that inspire the artist and fuel his artistic imagination. In his drawings, he re-imagines the ordinary and invents a new artistic scenario. In order to transform the ordinary into art, he extracts its formal essence, using it to perform a suspense-filled drama on paper. His drawings are composed in modern aesthetic manner, through the application of modern aesthetic concepts, techniques, and instruments, but strangely bear the atmosphere of a traditional mind. The Oberoi Bali, Jl. Kayu Aya, Seminyak.

Now – March 25 NEKA Art Museum

“Becoming” is an exhibition, showcasing the works by the artists of the Galang Kangin art group. There are 15 artists exhibiting their works, with a total of 42 works being displayed. Dipping in the Kool-Aid Now – March 31 Tonyraka Art Gallery “Dipping in the Kool-Aid” celebrates the artistic interactions of Indonesian and Australian artists with prisoners who are incarcerated in Indonesian jails. Collectively, their interests center on the socially-beneficial roles, played by the prisoners as artist/artistic collaborators and the artists as prisoners. The exhibition grows from an experimental laboratory, run by artists who worked predominantly in Klungkung Prison. Borrowing its title from the old American prison slang for entering uninvited into a conversation, this exhibition features works by 12 artists, including studio works by internationally-renowned artists, Rodney Glick and Mangu Putra. | Tonyraka Art Gallery, Jl. Raya Mas No. 86, Ubud

The Enigma: Looking at Life through Women’s Eyes Now – April 15 ARTOTEL Sanur Collaborating with Cata Odata, ARTOTEL Sanur currently showcases the newest set of works by five male artists in an exhibition called “The Enigma: Looking at Life through Women’s Eyes”. This exhibition sees the artists attempt to share their visual stories about encounter, dialogue and connection with the women who inspire them. For them, it is a reminder of their respective daughters, partners, sisters, mothers, friends and lovers. Through the works, audiences are invited to look at the roles of these women within society, as well as the intricacies of their day-to-day lives where women are no longer being framed merely as a beautiful propaganda. Here, these artists shift the viewpoint by embracing the connection between men and women in certain frameworks and boundaries, as well as the social and cultural contexts they live in. | ARTOTEL Sanur, Jl. ART

Galung Wiratmaja Through his art, Galung Wiratmaja seeks to translate the values of what surrounds us as humans, as well as to appreciate even the smallest things. He uses minimal, warm colors to portray it, with a distinctive way of representing the figures which invites his audiences to look far ahead. He currently showcases his work at NEKA Art Museum until March 25. How did you become an artist? I had always liked to draw. It was also my neighborhood that had given me a strong influence. At that time, many children in my village were involved in creating arts, doing sculptures and paintings in particular. When I was 13 years old, I started to put more focus on traditional paintings. After I finished high school, I intended to widen my knowledge on arts. With this in mind, I then continued my study at Udayana University where I took art courses. What are the things that mostly inspire your works? It’s all about the things around me. It can be about the environment, daily life or personal experience. Meanwhile, the inspiration comes from everywhere. My interest toward something can stir the emotions and ideas which would be the foundations of my works. How has the pursuit of your art style been? I began with the expressionism style that tends to be slightly abstract. During the process, I also did landscape painting which was still wrapped in expressionist style. Lately, though I’m still interested in and working on expressionism, the figurative elements in my works have begun to appear.

Any particular meaning of the colors that often appear in your works? These colors basically represent the feelings that reinforce my works thematically. However, there are also times when the colors are just colors; they are not meant to represent anything. As we can see, the predominant color in my work is gray, with the shades of green and brown to accompany it. If you can say, what is the strongest characteristic in your art? In the recent years, the figures in my work have always had their backs facing the audience. It is only my figures’ backs that are shown. I am focused to explore this side recently as it opens a space that could be more imaginative. Lastly, what are you trying to convey through your works? My messages in general are how to make more sense of something that has been overlooked, how to put more concern on something that has been considered unimportant, and how to privilege something that seems mundane. All things have value, and they are all important.

SPA

Remède Spa Inspired by Balinese traditions, this lavish spa is the perfect destination to rejuvenate. LOOK Part of The St. Regis Bali Resort, Remède Spa is a delightfully indulgent escape which is focused on imbuing and spoiling their guests. The depictions of the moon and a colony of butterflies run through the spa facilities, with the plays of light and shadow creating an extended atmosphere of calm and relaxation for guests’ experiences. Besides its eight treatment rooms, the spa also houses lavish facilities like a facial room and a beauty salon, two aromatherapy steam rooms, a Finnish sauna room and an Aqua Vitale Pool which is used for sea salt bath therapy. THE FEEL We were curious about their signature “The Remède Customized Massage” (1,850k), so we decided to give it a try. Whether seeking the relief for overexerted muscles or wanting to let mind and body escape the reality, this treatment has been designed specially, allowing therapist to customize the treatment by using specialty products and techniques for an ultimate rejuvenation. Based on our particular areas of need, the therapist might borrow from a variety of methods, enhanced with their signature warm, aromatic paraffin to ensure our comfort. Our massage began with a consultation with our therapist, allowing us to know how the treatment will be done. After our therapist knew what we needed, she explained about the treatment she had customized for us which included deep tissue massage, with much elbow pressure to be applied. As we agreed to it, our therapist then let us to lay on the bed. After rubbing our foot with warm towel, we got our back

massaged gently, followed by the placement of warm paraffin on our back. Meanwhile, our feet were also put into two individual bags of melted paraffin to soothe the tired joints and stimulate the blood circulation. Done with the paraffin, the treatment then continued with the customized massage, carried out gently on every part of our body with medium and strong pressure to release the muscle knots. However, our scalp and head were treated a bit extensively, using hair mask which was also great for our hair health. After 60 minutes, our whole treatment ended with a shower, followed by glass of refreshing mango juice, getting us totally ready to face the rest of the day. INGREDIENTS The massage uses a combination of coconut cream and essential oil which offers more benefits for the skin, compared to using essential oil only. The options are Embrace with sweet orange essence, Abundance with peppermint essence and Affirmation with lavender essence. For the scalp and head massage, there are two options to choose from which are hair mask and ginseng-infused hair tonic. SURF

B

ali, as the ultimate surfers paradise, has opened unlimited opportunities for both local residents and expatriate entrepreneurs on the island to dive into surfing businesses from surf charters to surf apparel - while most are dominated by international brands, local talents have slowly been making their way into the market too. Now let’s talk about surfboards, the very thing that connects a surfer with the love for waves. Avid surfers take their boards seriously and usually have a set of different boards for each different wave condition, early morning would usually involve a surf check which is critical in defining which board they would paddle out on that day. With a price tag that could get up to a couple thousand dollars for “big name” boards, there are also cheaper local shaper’s boards that seem to be getting more popular. Although big brand companies offer different types of boards so you can still find what shape works for your break, still - you have to be a good enough surfer to know exactly what you want. If you are a beginner or fancy experimenting with different types of boards, local shaper’s custom boards might be a great choice due to their cost effectiveness, and if the shaper is really good - you might even be able to adjust the dimensions to fit your body type or other preferences such as custom artwork etc. Local shapers can help you choose a board that works for a particular spot you are looking at (they are usually good surfers themselves) and mostly you will be able to tweak the design to get the board working better for your current surfing - all without costing you a fortune. Those seem to be the main reasons why more and more surfers prefer to custom make their boards by local shapers, aside from supporting local business of course. Meet Komang Sudarma, the man behind KMS surfboards. He started his career as a sander and part of the quality control team at one of the bigger surfboard companies and Komang took his opportunity to learn how to make an international standard surfboard from scratch under the guidance of professional shaper he had the privilege to work with.

“It was to fulfill his dreams of helping a local to make it in the industry, so I did it for him too,” said Komang. Six months following Allan Byrne’s passing, Komang started shaping boards himself - to honour the very man who taught him everything he knew about making high quality surfboards, the man he idolize like his own father. “He had so much faith in my talent and ensured me that I could make it as a great shaper,” Komang added. Today, eight years later, Komang has made it in the surfing world with his talents and maintained his business well. Through happy customer references and word of mouth, KMS will only get bigger in the island’s surf scene, and in fact he’s recently branched out into another location. When asked what’s special about his surfboards, Komang remained modest saying only his customers have the right to say what makes them good. Komang partnered with a company to help him import the best quality materials for his surfboards from Australia. He has made all types of different boards from beginners to pro surfboards, although he admits that he’s mostly made short boards and pro boards. He’s also helped by a few friends who are keen to help him and learn how to do ding repairs and making a lot of other surf essentials including custom fins.
