The new Balinese year has brought with it fine weather and blue skies. You have got to love that. It is indeed a great time to be on the island. March and April could also be called the festival months nowadays, which makes a lot of sense being the start of the New Year, with new hopes and challenges, and a time to have new experiences. We have two electronic music festivals happening in the Canggu area, first Air Festival kicks off on the Easter long weekend which promises to be huge with a lot more going on than just music, but they also have a great line-up this year and now very close to home. Check the interview inside with the organisers. Moonlight is on the following weekend, in the outdoor venues of Canggu, also with a grand line-up of international acts. Bali Spirit Festival is back again up in Ubud from April 2 – 8, and this year being held at Bali Purnati. Well ahead of its time, the BSF helped to bring yoga to Ubud, it is also one of the great yoga events around the world and the world comes to visit BSF every year. 12 – 14 April also sees Ubud come to life again with the Ubud Food Festival. We all know how much great food there is available all over town, here’s your chance to get it all in one place. There are plenty more events going on over the next two weeks, check inside or online for all the latest. www. thebeatbali.com

SCOOP BALISPIRIT FESTIVAL RETURNS TO UBUD The 11th series of the annual global celebration of yoga, dance and music, BaliSpirit Festival, will be soon landing on the island. As one of South East Asia’s biggest annual yoga, dance and music festivals, the festival will take place in Ubud from April 2 to 8, featuring yoga, dance, meditation and breath-work workshops and seven nights of music concerts. Over the last 10 years, the festival has continued to grow and now attracts approximately 7,000 people from over 50 different countries each year to Ubud. The feeling of community and practice of karma yoga and giving back is also felt strongly here as money is also raised to go to its annual outreach programs and partner charities. Unlike the past events, there is a new format for 2018 as all programs will now take place at the same place which is at The Bali Purnati Center for the Arts. Meanwhile, the music nights will still feature established conscious-festival headliners, authentic world music masters, and up-and-coming underground artists; some of them including Raio, Matiu Te Huki, Amaru Pumac Kuntur, Haji Basim, Lulu & Mischka, Minük and more. To learn more and book tickets, visit www.balispiritfestival.com.

Anyone is welcome to join them on the grass, or simply enjoy a delicious range of meats from the BBQ. ~MANJA~

FEATURE

interview

The first time I heard Manja play, I thought instantly how much they sounded like Bon Iver and that band’s haunting mountain dwelling, indie folk music. James’ soaring vocals, the guitar sounds of Nick and keyboards from Mark are like something you could hear coming deep from the woods in the middle of the night, haunting but touching like few rock bands could every pretend to be. More about their sound later… Manja the band has only been around for a year and a bit, but have already turned many heads here on the island and around the region. Officially launched in January 2017, Manja’s members are not as new to the Indonesian music scene as it might seem. Siblings Nick and Mark (right and centre above) are part of The Mangrooves, a reggae band already known nationally, who were nominated twice last year in the 2016 Indonesian Music Awards. Meanwhile, lead singer/guitarist of Manja, James (left above) studied music in Sydney and more recently was doing the hard graft of the Bali cover-band circuit. Hard work, but great training. The Beat caught up with Nick and James for a chat to find out exactly where Manja is at today.

52

www.thebeatbali.com

So what was the greatest influence putting this band together? Or was it an organic creation? How did it come about? Nick: We had mutual best friend named Ega, who came back every year to Bali and we would go to his house and catch up. He would always say “you guys should make a band together”. And so we did. James: Two years in a row he suggested we should jam and we eventually did in October 2016, and we’ve been jamming ever since. Are you all old friends? And how about the band’s sound, was that influenced by something or just happened? Nick: We all met a while ago, but really just been hanging out over the last two years. The band’s sound happened naturally. James: The band’s sound, if we even have a distinct sound, I think it just came from what we like to play and what we listen to. Often times when I come up with a song and we don’t know how the song is going to be played until Nick or Mark comes up with a riff or a weird sound that can be the centre of the song. So I guess it all just comes from experimentation. How would you describe Manja’s music to someone you met on the street? James: Our music is pop/rock orientated. Mark and Nick are really into alternative music; they love bands like Alt-J, Elephant Kind, and

FEATURE Break Bot. Whereas I am more influenced by the rock side of things like Tool, Deftones, and Karnivool. However, I also LOVE psychedelic music like Pink Floyd, Tame Impala, and MGMT. So I guess our compositions tell stories of our experiences combined with influences of pop/ rock, alternative, and psychedelic. Nick: Manja floats across many genres with their originals and covers, there’s a mix of alternative pop/rock to funky/disco vibe. What are some highlights since the band formed? Nick: One of the highlights was getting the chance to play in Jakarta and a few shows abroad such as the Philippines and Maldives in such short notice. Considering the band was only formed a year ago it’s pretty good. James, you have a distinct vocal sound in Manja. Is that new or have you sung like that always? James: It’s new in the sense that I’ve only started singing seriously three years ago. When you have to sing everyday your voice goes through a few changes before it “ripens”. In Manja, I sing the way I always have sung, the only way I know how to sing, and that’s constantly changing. So you were telling me there is a single coming out soon. What’s that about? Nick: We are currently working on a single, followed by an EP that we will be released around mid-year. Up to now, we have 10 originals songs. James: It’s very much still in the works. It’s called Still Young and it’s about us realising that we are “still young” and there is still so much we can do before we call it a day. It’s meant to introduce the concept of our album. We want to explore different aspects of youth (partying, travelling, experimenting, etc..) but all from our perspective. We want to release at least three singles (and their live sessions and what not) before the album. Let me assure you, you are still young enough. Who’s writing the songs? How’s that work amongst the band? James: We all kinda write together. One of us would come up with a structure and then we

arrange the rest together. Sometimes we start with just a riff and build a song around that. At the moment we’ve got 10 songs that are ready structure-wise but because we keep changing their arrangements we’ve decided to work on one song at a time for now. What do you think of the music scene now in Indonesia? Is there a place for bands like Manja? I think we’ll fit right into where the music scene is going in Indonesia. If you check out alternative bands like Elephant Kind, Scaller, Stars and Rabbit, and even Zat Kimia (alternative rock), I’d say there’s a growing demand for alternative music here. What’s the feeling with Manja, you gonna take it all the way? James: HELL YEAH! We’re gonna take this band as far as it can go and then some. Nick: The sky is the limit! The feeling is there and the vibe is there. We’re gonna work hard on our music like a 9-5 job and see where it will take us. And besides, we’re getting old.. slowly.. How about the name Manja? James: At first we were trying to find a band name that was easy to pronounce and short. So we made an acronym of our names MArk Nick JAmes, MANJA. Then we found that Manja is actually an English word, derived from Hindi, which means an abrasive string used for competitive kite fighting. The Indonesian word is Benang Gelasan because it’s usually laced with shards of glass. This then created our band’s philosophy. We want to show a way to connect a person and their dreams, in other words inspire them, the same way that a kite string tethers the person to their kite, but also remind people that we need to work hard and compete to achieve those dreams. Where can people catch Manja playing live? Nick: We mostly play around the south of Bali, such as Canggu and Seminyak. The venues we play in vary. So better to head over to our instagram @wearemanja for the details on our upcoming shows.

LET’S TALK

AIR FESTIVAL

Air Festival is on this year with its very first Bali edition being held at the eco-lodge, La Brisa and neighboring lands with two stages that will be showcasing all types of magic around the clock from March 30th to April 1st. Expect house and techno, disco and cacao, live music, slow and organic beats, transformational workshops, vibrant yoga and much more. The Air Stage will be featuring DJs such as Rampa, Blond:ish, Fred P and Makam whereas the Awan stage will hold artists like Mo Kolours, Martha Von Straaten, Estray and many more! We are catching up with a couple of the organizers Walker Barnard and Catherine Sylvie aka Sylvie Foret LIVE on Facebook for a chat on what’s to come! First question... Tell us a little bit about the Air Festival. How long has it been around and how did it come about? Catherine: We were and still are just a bunch of friends wanting to do a cool thing in a beautiful place. Most of us already lived in Bali and some of us even grew up here. We all came from a certain kind of underground club culture in Europe that valued authenticity over ego — we wanted to bring that here. An event that was vibrant and geared towards creating community and lasting memories.

54

www.thebeatbali.com

We orient towards the people who care about good music and know what a great party is. Walker: It started back in 2015 as a getaway from Nyepi for party people and our little family. There had been smaller parties on Gili Air thrown by our extended crew and the idea came up to do a three day event over Nyepi and it snowballed into a festival that first year. We were actually totally surprised at how many people came on the first night. Now the festival has evolved into much more diverse affair involving all kinds of people not just the party crowd. And it is no longer on Nyepi so we can all enjoy the stillness and silence of Nyepi. As we walked around Gili Air the first time we realized it would be an ideal location to have the event we all dreamed of. The people, the beaches, the laid back vibe, all super conducive to the experience we imagined. Yes for sure, you wouldn’t want to miss Nyepi. So how has it evolved, what does a full day look like now? Run us thru just one day Walker: Let’s take Saturday for instance on the Awan stage and I’ll leave Catherine to fill you in on the Main stage. Catherine: So Saturday the music on the Air

FEATURE Stage starts at 2pm. And that’s about all I can say about it for now! The lineup, obviously, is EPIC. The energy is always big on the Saturday. As day turns to night and the space lights up, the vibe always gets super sky-high! This year we have all our ingenious homies coming to build for us— many of the same heads that are responsible for the magic of Fusion Festival Music and Garbicz Festival. It’s going to look and feel so magical. And please stay tuned to Air Festival for lineup announcements etc! Walker: And on the Saturday on the Awn stage looks a little something like this. We start at 11am with yoga classes and workshops led by world class presenters. We move into acoustic music sets and then Kula Rit’Mundo will lead a drumming and singing workshop (I experienced him doing this at Being Festival in Portugal last year and he had 300 people singing and playing drums together, it was absolutely incredible!). After sunset we start the cacao ceremony, this is a moment to join together, drink cacao and weave together an intentional space of reverence that builds into a dance party by the end. And then Supa Kalulu takes the stage, an incredible local band who play Zibawean dance music. They played our pre party at La Laguna and totally lit up the dance floor. So excited to have them join us for the festival! From there were are off into the dj sets taking us to the 3am close of the Awan stage. All the djs playing on the Awan stage share the commonality of playing a slower world music based sound played from a deep intentional space. The Awan stage is an exploration of what celebration and party is when we strip away the getting wasted part and look at the experience as an opportunity to create presence and connection between people. High vibes! So nobody’s getting wasted? Interesting. And it goes for three solid days and nights, right? Are people coming from all over for the Air Festival? Oh I wouldn’t say that. It’s a choose your own adventure kind of festival. That exploration is the focus and intention on the Awan stage. This really resonates for people who have been on the scene and into music for decades and are looking to expand the potential of the dance floor experience beyond what you take to get in the mood. There is a thriving global scene

of people making this choice and looking for alternatives to the standard club world. Catherine: I mean there are many pathways through this festival experience. People are coming from all over the world with diverse intentions and desires - the two stages offer very different yet aligned possibilities and it’s up to you how you choose to navigate those spaces. So how many people are you expecting to get along and where do they come from? Walker: Yeah people are coming from all over the world, U.S., Australia, Europe, SE Asia and of course Indonesia. It’s a very global crowd that comes to the festival. We are on track with ticket sales and expecting 2000 people at the festival. Any last shout out before we go? Walker: Really just so excited for everyone to experience what we are creating and curating at this year’s festival at La Brisa. It’s a whole different feel and reality than previous festivals on Gili Air. We have had more time and energy to focus on what happens when you enter the gate and dive into the festival world. We have all evolved over the previous years festivals and this year is the culmination of all that experience. See you on the dance floor beautiful people! Catherine: Haha yes! Right now I am feeling super grateful to our team of geniuses and lovers. This is not our first rodeo together and I’m just so amazed at what we manifest together year after year. Walker Barnard, my beloved and partner in crime, and the other founders, super power-couple Tiago Oudman and Kelly Bug Ariella as well as all our amazing artists and volunteers coming from all over this world. Way too many to name right now but you know who you are. Cheers Walker and Catherine, good luck with the show! Festival passes are available on www.airfestival.net. We’ll be running a social media contest over the next week too. Look out for that! Catherine: And thank YOU guys for this opportunity to share what we’re about! See you on the dance floor!

What Do You Recommend, Café Moka Seminyak Complet Sandwiches

CHEF?

Chef: Ketut Suarsa Having been around for almost two decades, Café Moka Seminyak is absolutely a where-to-go when you’re looking for freshest breads, pastries, cakes and other healthy munchies. Not only these, they have also extended it to serving breakfast and all-day-brunch; one of the offers is these Complet Sandwiches (72k), recommended by their chef, Ketut Suarsa. What makes these sandwiches so fun is that it has been fancied up a bit, taking the classic to the next level with tender, flaky croissants instead of plain buns. A special treat, indeed, these sandwiches are packed with flavors, assembling the warm, flaky and buttery croissants with delicious ham, cheese, egg, tomato, onion and lettuce, plus plenty of creamy homemade mayonnaise. Not only are these sandwiches delightful and delicious, they are also so filling, perfect to be enjoyed whenever you need to fill that empty stomach. Another thing Ketut highlighted from their sandwiches – they only use freshest ingredients and no preservatives, so everything that you eat at Moka is all super healthy.

FOOD

T

rying to escape from quite an intense sun during our afternoon walk on the trendy Oberoi sidewalks, my partner and I decided to stop at the cozy looking Meja Kitchen & Bar at IZE Hotel. Any iced cold drinks and light lunch would do, we thought at first. The mains menu is loaded with mouth-watering dishes of my favorites such as pork belly sambal matah, Balinese duck betutu, black angus beef rendang and pork ribs – it looks like we’ve changed our mind about the light lunch. With so many favorites to choose from, I finally opted for a Balinese signature pork satay from their mains while my partner thought it was time to try a Singaporean Laksa – probably not a common food to enjoy in a hot day but we felt intrigued enough to have a go. Pork Satay is one of my favorite Balinese dishes I haven’t grown tired of eating for years, and though it’s quite easy to find pork satay on every street corner, there’s not so many restaurants that serve it as good – let alone better. The two level restaurant, with its stylish retro touch opens from 7am – 11pm daily, serving a wide variety of Asian and international cuisine and a rich selection of Cocktails. The restaurant’s ground floor is fully decorated with fine vintage photos of Indonesia. Located at Oberoi’s roadside, makes it a standout spot to dine and drink with friends overlooking the buzz of Seminyak’s most happening street. Wow-ing at the tray of my much anticipated pork satay as it comes to the table, I was impressed with the big chunks of satay meat, definitely big enough to share with my partner and aside from that I was also excited that they had included the famous cabe garam (chopped chili with lots of salt) and lontong (rice cake) on the side.

I sprinkled the chopped chili over my satay and took my first bite. Wow! It was as delicious as I remembered, perfectly seasoned tender pork meat that melts in your mouth. This is the kind of spicy food that I absolutely adore, plus it gives you enough reason to order one of their signature refreshing cocktails – I mean, there’s nothing a cocktail can’t solve, right? Try loca apple martini and tropical berries from their cocktails menu. As my partner helped me finish my tasty satay, I tried some of his Singaporean Laksa – a flavorful bowl of noodle soup with prawn, chicken, boiled egg and tofu. The soup has the right balance of spice and coconut milk which made it taste amazingly delicious. Now ready for a dessert, we decided to share a ginger crème brule for the sweet finish. This homemade ginger crème brule served with brook farm green tea ice cream had the right level of sweetness to my taste, besides the fact that green tea ice cream is also one of my favorites - we both agreed that we could have had one each. Meja Kitchen & Bar also has a selection of fine wine and everyone’s classic favorites such as crispy calamari, mac & cheese, black angus beef burger, steak and more – find those in the international corner of their menu. Find also Spongebob inspired dishes for your minis such as krabby patty and sphagetti ala Patrick in their Kid’s Menu. CD REVIEW

9/10 AMEN DUNES Freedom The creation of musician Damon McMahon, Amen Dunes began as a collection of improvised songs recorded in the winter of 2006 in a trailer in upstate New York. After sharing them with a few friends, the tapes were shelved, and the following summer McMahon moved to China and all but quit making music. Luckily after a hiatus of almost four years, he began working on new material, inspired by a multitude of disparate things. Who’da thunk it? Obscure 60s surfer rebel meets lo-fi NYCbased producer. The result? This year’s most satisfying earworm of a song: the brilliant, quavering “Miki Dora”. The first single from Freedom, and tone-setter for his fifth longplayer takes its cue from the life story of surfing’s most famously destructive counterculture icon with magnificent results. It’s a wonderful slow-building strum that feels sincere from the get-go; something that’s echoed on other tracks like “Believe”,

which deals with McMahon’s mother’s terminal illness. It’s no downer though – the simmering, groovy bass lines and subtly layered songwriting give both tracks – and indeed the album, a glowing sheen. Taking his influences from such touchstones as Syd Barret, Tim Buckley and early Verve cuts, McMahon weaves a rich sound that is eventful yet uncluttered, earnest yet unpretentious. Listen out for beautiful flourishes that are almost buried within the rest. Ensuring a flurry of pre-release hype, Freedom will be released on the achingly cool Brooklynbased Sacred Bones label – home to other luminaries as artists including Zola Jesus, David Lynch, John Carpenter, Crystal Stilts, the Men, and The Soft Moon. Based on this effort, Amen Dunes has more than earned his place amongst them. Dan Ashcroft

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS The Beat astrologer Manish Kumar Arora reads into the next two weeks. ARIES ( 21 March – 19 April )

CANCER ( 21 June – 22 July )

You learn to embrace inner change in order to feel more empowered. There may be more opportunities to find support, financial and emotional, but you should be wary of excessive living on credit and borrowing too heavily from the future. Spiritual inspiration is a potential, however, but you need to make real efforts to incorporate your spiritual and romantic needs, as well as compassion, into your goals and relationships. This may be a good period for volunteer work, or for work done behind the scenes, in private, or in the helping professions. Favorable Dates : 23, 26, 5 Favorable Colors : Green & Yellow

Your ability to communicate your ideas is improved multiple times over, and your personal popularity increases. Your hunches are spot on. You’ll be exercising a whole new aspect of your personality, thanks to a partner who excites your senses like no one ever has before. You are more tolerant in your attitude towards others, and you’re considerably more confident about expressing the playful, creative, and fun side to your personality. This is a cycle in which you become more compassionate, empathetic, and sensitive, or get in deeper touch with these traits. Favorable Dates : 28, 30, 3 Favorable Colors : White & Red

TAURUS ( 20 April – 20 May )

LEO ( 23 July – 22 August )

Good publicity may come your way. If your work involves the public, you can safely expect increased popularity now, or you might receive good reviews, feedback, or word-of-mouth opportunities. There can be important opportunities through meetings, courses, teaching, and connections made in the neighbourhood or through siblings. You are more perceptive, and others are more receptive to your ideas. You might also find less time for socializing during this cycle, perhaps due to relationship stresses, but also because you are more serious than usual about your interpersonal relationships and have a hard time swallowing superficiality. Favorable Dates : 25, 30, 4 Favorable Colors : White & Yellow

It’s a time when you are filled with ideas about the future. You are planting seeds, aiming to get started on projects that will reap rewards in the future. While this can be exciting, try not to take on more than you can handle. Your vision is quite optimistic, and you might over-estimate what you are capable of doing down the road. In relationships, this period looks for any weak links and exposes them – they become obvious and even glaring. You may have to let go of relationships built on weak foundations, or work on strengthening them. Favorable Dates : 25, 31, 2 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Red

GEMINI ( 21 May – 20 June )

VIRGO ( 23 August – 22 September )

You can feel more joyful about the services you provide and the support you give, after taking a realistic look at these things and making the necessary adjustments. Your belief systems, learning experiences, and hunger for adventure grow and expand at a rapid pace. You are more able to get in touch with your subconscious mind, and in fact, confronting your fears can be quite pleasurable during this period. If you’ve been scattering your energies and haven’t truly noted and acknowledged just how much you do, then this period will stimulate you to tidy up. Favorable Dates : 27, 31, 3 Favorable Colors : Green& Yellow

You can be filled with creative ideas and plans for realizing a dream. Romantic opportunities tend to abound during this cycle; or chances to kick back and have fun, express yourself, and pursue hobbies and entertainment. In order to expand, you need to pursue your goals with confidence and optimism, without going overboard. Love and romance may come into your life, or an existing romance is enhanced with good humour and warmth. You might find that possibilities for casual love relationships open up to you now, and some of you could be overwhelmed with choices. Favorable Dates : 27, 1, 5 Favorable Colors : White & Red

LIBRA ( 23 September – 22 October )

CAPRICORN ( 22 December – 19 January )

Your life seems more stable during this time period, likely because you are able to look at yourself in a realistic and reasonable manner. You have a more mature grasp of your own capabilities, you project a more responsible, perhaps serious, and self-assured personality to others. You may be more open to receiving grounded, practical advice, and benefit from humbly learning from others. You may find yourself taking on the role of consultant or advisor. Healthy, wise risks are likely to pay off, but be careful of overconfidence with risky investments. Favorable Dates : 28, 2, 4 Favorable Colors : Blue & Red

This stage of your life is a practical one. Financial success may not be remarkable, yet it is generally steady, if slow to come by. Substantial payments and rewards for services and work done in the past can be received now. Business partnerships may form that have mutual benefits. A romantic relationship is strengthened after undergoing some tests and adjustments. What you want from a romance, as well as what you are realistically capable of giving back to a romantic relationship, will be clear towards the end of this period. Favorable Dates 27, 1, 4 Favorable Colors : Red & Green

SCORPIO ( 23 October – 21 November )

AQUARIUS ( 20 January – 18 February )

You have a mature grasp of your own capabilities and you project a more responsible, perhaps serious, and self-assured personality to others. Strengthened relationships with authority figures may play a supportive role in your life now. The work you do and the responsibilities you take on provide you with a solid sense of purpose. There can be more coupling and breakups during this period. People who have given up on the idea of the couple may reconsider now, perhaps as fear of commitment, self-image problems, or lack of faith. Favorable Dates : 23, 29, 4 Favorable Colors : White & Yellow

There may be some delays and slowdowns experienced in the areas of health, mobility, and career. It may seem like acquaintances and sometimes siblings are blocking your growth in some manner, and these relationships may be strained as a result. This is a strong period for re-organizing and restructuring your home life. The goal should be to build your sense of family, security, and comfort. There is a tendency to “go steady” or get close to one particular person at this time. You may be seeking more playfulness in a committed relationship during this period. Favorable Dates : 26, 2, 4 Favorable Colors : Red & White

SAGITTARIUS ( 22 November -21 December )

PISCES ( 19 February – 20 March )

This is an excellent time for starting new regimens to better your health and well-being, such as regular exercise, more structured and productive use of your time, and so forth. Organizing your work space is appropriate, and so is re-organizing your daily schedule. It’s also possible that situations surrounding your job throw you a few curve balls at this time. However, you will begin to see the value of your increased responsibilities and focus on the job. Those of you who have given up on finding a meaningful one-to-one relationship or partnership might now reconsider. Favorable Dates : 25, 27, 31Favorable Colors : White & Purple

Your life seems more stable during this time period, likely because you are able to look at yourself in a realistic and reasonable manner, and because you are less vulnerable to self-delusions. More focus on people, peace, harmony, beauty, relationships, and fairness in your promotional materials and products or services can be successful. Teaming up with a business partner can be beneficial. Word of mouth will be even more vital to success than it has been, including social media popularity. Relationships with others tend to be easygoing, friendly, and positive. Favorable Dates : 24, 29, 3 Favorable Colors : Blue & Grey

Now – March 31 Tonyraka Art Gallery “Dipping in the Kool-Aid” celebrates the artistic interactions of Indonesian and Australian artists with prisoners who are incarcerated in Indonesian jails. Collectively, their interests center on the socially-beneficial roles, played by the prisoners as artist/artistic collaborators and the artists as prisoners. The exhibition grows from an experimental laboratory, run by artists who worked predominantly in Klungkung Prison. Borrowing its title from the old American prison slang for entering uninvited into a conversation, this exhibition features works by 12 artists, including studio works by internationally-renowned artists, Rodney Glick and Mangu Putra. Tonyraka Art Gallery, Jl. Raya Mas No. 86, Ubud.

Now – April 15 ARTOTEL Sanur Collaborating with Cata Odata, ARTOTEL Sanur currently showcases the newest set of works by five male artists in an exhibition called “The Enigma: Looking at Life through Women’s Eyes”. This exhibition sees the artists attempt to share their visual stories about encounter, dialogue and connection with the women who inspire them. For them, it is a reminder of their respective daughters, partners, sisters, mothers, friends and lovers. Through the works, audiences are invited to look at the roles of these women within society, as well as the intricacies of their day-to-day lives where women are no longer being framed merely as a beautiful propaganda. Here, these artists shift the viewpoint by embracing the connection between men and women in certain frameworks and boundaries, as well as the social and cultural contexts they live in. Gaze Now – April 20 Positive Negative Gallery

After a brief hiatus, including a recent visit back to her home town, Positive Negative Gallery welcomes the return of Tracy Hamer and her works to walls of Cocoon Beach Club. Themed “Gaze”, this exhibition sees the artist’s skillful figurative subjects which are splashed against an abstract background, expressing both perfection and chaos. Looks of classic seduction and old time glamour stare at the viewer from within a lively backdrop populated by color blocks, drips, dots and lines. | Positive Negative Gallery, Cocoon Beach Club, Jl. Double Six, Seminyak

One Now – April 10 Living Food Lab Living Food Lab hosts an exhibition by Windee Winata called “One”. The works show how he connects with the unknown. These images aren’t always about the visible setting, but rather the spirit. The images are captured with a single long exposure which is unpredictable. He cannot fully control the outcome, but it seems to only emerge when the universe takes over. The process feels more like a fulfilling collaboration, whereas the results are often surprising and delightful. Furthermore, the images sees him long for simplicity in life, and it is all reflected perfectly in his photographs. Meanwhile, the locations he chooses to photograph are a consequence of his need of escape and be alone; the airy and beautiful places he visits as part of his personal journey of solitude. | Living Food Lab, Jl. ART

Anthok S. Anthok S. has been a full-time artist for the past 20 years. Like many artists, he originally started out doodling, but got serious when he entered university. Today, he creates works that are meant to trigger the mind and emotion. See his works at NEKA Art Museum until March 25.

How did it begin? It started when I was studying at the Indonesian Institute of Arts in Denpasar in 1996. I was there to hone my childhood talent, and I did a lot of studying about what art really is. Your inspirations and themes? The inspiration tends to come from anything to do with justice and politics. Thus social-related themes are normally discussed in my art. Tell us about your artistic process? My process occurs when ideas come to my mind. Then, I start by sketching it on my medium, and the rest follows. How do you insert your message into your pieces of art? By adding some of the symbols that are not common or should not be in the main object. In general, my message is normally to remind people to be moral, honest and fair.

If it can be described, what is the characteristics of your work? The social themes that have been processed into a narrative form. An example is one of my works titled Sang Tokoh. It’s a parody about a leader, portrayed in the figure of a clown. Can you tell us a bit about one of your works displayed at NEKA Art Museum? One of my exhibited works is titled Woman by Woman. When speaking of women’s problems, many of them actually contain ‘mysteries’ that most of us never know. In the context of this work, I would like to portray the appeal, as well as my perspective to address the existence of women in our life. Creating this work, I used oil on canvas which then I combined with resin and mask as a way to tell what I have in mind. www.thebeatbali.com

SPA

Rock Spa They will treat you just like a rock star. Rock Spa Hard Rock Hotel Bali, Jl. Pantai Kuta, Kuta T. 761 869 ext. 7325 LOOK Amidst the vibrant atmosphere of Hard Rock Hotel Bali, lies an oasis called Rock Spa. A cocoon for those who wish to be spoiled like a rock star, this spa embraces an earthy ambience, featuring a combination of rattan furnishings and wooden adornments, with the dim lighting making it feel much homier. The spacious main area is then skirted with huge glass windows, allowing guests to enjoy the green view of the hotel’s tropical garden while lounging. FEEL The spa offers a wide range of body therapy and treatments to restore and balance the mind, body and soul for the challenges of the long evenings ahead. As bamboo massage is not so common, so we decided to give their 60-minute “Rhythm Sticks” (550k) a shot. Using bamboo canes throughout the ritual, it combines the traditional benefits of massage and comforting effects of warmed oil, making it a perfect treat after a big night. Our treatment began from the back part of our body, with the bamboo canes replacing the therapist’s hands, providing a deep massage. The massage was done with organically-treated bamboo canes of different lengths, diameters and shapes, held by our therapist and rolled over the muscles, with the help of essential oil that lets it slide on our skin comfortably. The longer sticks were used for the gliding strokes on our back and leg, whereas the smaller ones were used for more detailed works, especially on the

foot and toes. As our muscles were kneaded, it then helped release the tension and ease the pain. The same procedure was then done on the front part of our body, followed with a nice head and scalp massage. After 60 minutes, this unique bamboo treatment helped our body and mind be more balanced, calmed and energized. INGREDIENTS For the massage, Rock Spa offers three essential oils which also represent the three qualities in Ayurveda philosophy. The oils are Balance which is made from orange, rosemary and basil, Energize from ginger, eucalyptus and grapefruit, and Chill from lavender, geranium and sandalwood. MAGIC We would say that this spa’s offers are unique, crafted with care and handled with an attention to detail. Moreover, it is going to be a nice pampering journey here as what you will get upon arrival until the departure is truly an attentive service by their whole staff. Upon arrival, you will be served with a cold towel and a glass of cool ginger tea, while your therapist will warmly greet you, providing you with a consultation sheet to let her know what you need. What you will love the most is the ‘warmth’ on your departure, featuring a cup of warm ginger tea, as well as Rock Spa’s signature warm wheat bag to be laid on our shoulders, perfecting your whole pampering experience here. www.thebeatbali.com

HEALTHY BALI HEALTH

FORTITUDE BALI F

ortitude is what happens when three girls get together, drop their 9-5 corporate jobs and decide to make a difference at their favourite holiday destination. Carrie, Simone and Jamie embarked on their exciting venture by starting up Crossfit gym in Bali, combining the two things they love – fitness and the island of the Gods following the lead of other Crossfit affiliates on the island, the three noticed a growing demand and realized that there was still plenty of room for more. Although the team came from the same passion for fitness, each of them represents different levels and aspects of fitness. While Carrie is more into power lifting and high intensity interval training, Simone enjoys cardio and kickboxing and Jamie is the Crossfit type of girl – and while they all have visited various gyms globally, they haven’t got any luck in finding one that offered all under one roof. In addition to that, they noticed the other aspects that are missing from a lot of gyms they’ve visited such as the lack of quality coaching, equipment as well as amenities and services, the three later came up with a concept of a high quality gym across all aspects

78

www.thebeatbali.com

– a one stop fitness facility that offers not only beautiful interior and friendly staff but also high quality equipment, outstanding and objective-driven programming and classes led by knowledgeable and experienced coaches aside from their fuel bar which serves vegan protein smoothies with no redefined sugar and yes, coffee. It’s also safe for you to expect clean bathrooms at Fortitude. They take things seriously at Fortitude, their equipment for example – is from Again Faster, one of the leading quality equipment manufacturers in Australia. Fortitude is also by far the only Crossfit affiliate in Bali to have assault airbikes and most importantly, the entire facility is air-conditioned which is crucial enough being the location is on the roadside of one of the hippest areas in Seminyak - we know it’s always summer in Bali and training in a humid air and extreme heat is no fun. Having an air-conditioned facility also helps them to keep the equipment in great condition. At Fortitude, members are provided with lockers, clean towels, shower facilities, customized toiletries and towel service for a maximum convenience. That’s not all, they also teamed up with premium hotels, cafes

HEALTHY BALI

and restaurants in Seminyak to provide a Travel and Train program which is designed for the fitness enthusiasts to plan a fitness holiday experience in Bali. Though its community consists of mainly drop in clients, their overall members are quite diverse. They are expatriates from around the globe such as Australia, US, UK, Mexico, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Jakarta who are living and working in Bali, including some locals too. Many of the members are also at beginner fitness level and have joined Fortitude to seek guidance and explore new skills from their coaches. Fortitude’s Head Coach McCoy from Scotland is the only CrossFit Level 3 Trainer in Indonesia. McCoy works for CrossFit HQ and travelling the world coaching athletes and coaches in CrossFit Level 1 and Level 2 Seminars. Best known for not only his amazing coaching abilities, he’s also known for his hair (you have to come and see for yourself!). Coach Yunus leads most of Fortitude’s Fit and Burn classes, this friendly Javanese has been passionate about fitness since a young age – with his extra skills in gymnastics, we’ll never have to wonder where he get his abs from. Coach Cornelia is the beauty amongst the beasts, the strong type though – with her three years of coaching experience, the Swede will help you lift weights like a pro. Fortitude offers four classes daily, Burn, Fit, Strength & Cardio. Burn is a HIIT, high calorie burning class that focuses on cardio intervals and bodyweight movements included running, rowing, burpees, air squats, and the dreaded airbike!

Fit is Fortitude’s very own version of metabolic conditioning that combines cardio training and functional movements using kettle bells, dumb bells, sleds, medicine balls and more. Strength program is designed by their affiliate partner Complete Strength and Performance that consists of major lifts and accessory movements. CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program that is constantly varied and focuses on functional movement at high intensity led by certified coaches. CrossFit is extremely effective in optimizing physical competence and contrary to popular belief, can be scaled for any athlete of any fitness level. They offer two membership options. Full membership allows members to join any type of classes and open gym. Crossfit Membership allows members to join all CrossFit classes and CrossFit specialty classes such as Intro to Weight lifting, Train with Coach and Open Gym – aside from drop-in and multi-day unlimited passes. Striving to build the fitness community in Bali and continuing to help people visiting and living in Bali get stronger, fitter, faster & healthier is Fortitude’s long term plan.
