We’re hoping the wet season will release its grip on the present weather situation soon. Get those winds blowing from the right direction and hopefully not start raining right at the beginning of the evening like last weekend. Man, that was totally unbelievable how it bucketed down early on the Friday and Saturday evenings. Bring on the dry! Please.

Last week we had the pleasure of enjoying the first Bali edition of the Air Festival, which is normally held on Gili Air, at La Brisa, Echo Beach over three days and nights (and right through to the morning each night) with a grand crescendo on the Sunday night/Monday morning which saw hundreds still on the dance floor well into the light of day. Hallelujah! Get your freak on was the call, and that’s exactly what we did and hundreds more to have a massive night next to the beach in a great venue with some awesome music. Well, some better than others. And if that wasn’t enough for all you party people, it’s on again this weekend, with Moonlight, but this time in three different venues including La Brisa, but also La Laguna and Greenlife. What a fun way to get your freak on! And we’ll have to wait and see if Air Festival makes it back to Gili Air next year or not. It looked like they were having a lot of fun right here though.
Check inside for all the details of what’s coming up in the venues over the next couple of weeks. There is sure to be something for everyone. Enjoy it as we move into another dry season on the island. Eventually.

RED HOT SUMMER TOUR AT FINNS REC CLUB Big Aussie music news for anyone on the island, The Red Hot Summer Tour is reaching our sunny shores, expanding its wings to Bali this April 22nd! The line-up includes a great Aussie lineup topped by Daryl Braithwaite and national hero Shannon Noll. Also joining the former Sherbet front man will be an all-Aussie bill of Ross Wilson (from Daddy Cool and Mondo Rock), 1927, Pseudo Echo and Jason Singh. Both Dazza and Ross Wilson have played in Bali before but not for a long time. Tour promoter Duane McDonald says he’s stoked about the whole thing. “It has been on the cards to take the Red Hot Summer Tour international for some time now, and the time was right to add Bali as part of the line-up for 2018,” McDonald explains. “Don’t miss out on seeing this top-notch live music show. We’ve already had feedback that music fans are going to travel over for the event. The Bali Red Hot Summer Tour is going to go off!” It’s set to happen on Sunday at Finns Recreation Club in Berawa, Canggu. Are you excited?!
GRAB’S WILL TAKE OVER UBER IN SOUTHEAST ASIA Uber has sold its Southeast Asian business to its competitors, Singaporean rival Grab valued at $6 billion. Rumours of the sell-off have been in the air for quite some time, Uber has sold its business in similar arrangements since 2016, when it sold to Didi in China for 20 percent ownership, and in Russia where they sold to local company Yandex for a 37 percent stake. The objective of the sale? To help Uber reel in its expenses in preparation for an IPO as soon as next year. This is the end of Uber for SEA, so from now on stick to Grab or Go-Jek for any online transportation services.

LIVING FOOD LAB PRESENTS “ONE” Living Food Lab has recently opened up a space for art exhibitions and Windee Winata is their first artist scheduled to display his art. At first glance, LFL looks like a playground built for food consumption, with the Liquid Lab, Salad Station, Breakfast Bar and Coffee, Cacao and Tea Counter, plus the desserts showcase. It’s insane! Their vision of nourishing food-loving people with people-loving food has transcended into a deeper understanding that goes far beyond the ingredients we put inside our bodies. It is about elevating the spirit with a multi-concept space for people looking for wholesome, healthy solutions to further clarify their minds and bodies. Windee is very excited to feature his art as much as the team at Living Food Lab is to present it. Hosting food-art dinners where both the artist and the chef are present, starting conversations about food pairing with art. It all kicks off on April 22 at Living Food Lab Ubud.

Jamie’s Italian

FOOD
This visit to Jamie’s Italian has been a long time coming. Since it officially opened to diners in 2015 - three years later, I finally made it! While we were in Kuta shopping in the middle of the day, my lunch partner and I walked past and decided to enter the two-storey restaurant. We were welcomed with a warm smile from the staff who guided us upstairs to the airconditioned area. We settled comfortably at the cozy table as the temperature finally shifted to cool. Located right at the heart of Kuta’s most famous entertainment area, this celebrity chef family friendly restaurant is open everyday from 11am - 11pm serving you all time Italian favorites from Jamie’s famous planks of antipasti, a selection of pastas, artisan pizzas, and mains that include herby lamb steak, the Jamie’s Italian burger, Chicken al mattone and much more. Sides of your choice are also available. And Oh... they have quite a novel kid’s menu presentation to please the fussy taste buds! Plus kids will have so much fun choosing the food through the view-master toy. The drinks menu loaded with a substantial white, red and rose wine selection, cocktails and mocktails as well as beers and soft drinks. I was totally in need for something refreshing, so I decided to give Jamie’s mojito a try while my partner opted for a pina colada. Jamie’s Mojito (white rum & Martini bianco with lime juice & sugar syrup, topped with Prosecco) was the perfect kind of refreshing beverage I needed. The mushroom fritti we ordered from their starters menu was served along with cured and crispy fish on their famous planks. First of all the mushroom fritti was out of this world delicious, the portobello mushrooms were
crispy and super tasty - this alone to me was definitely worth the visit! We then started digging in to the plank of goodness. We both loved each assortment on it - the cured salmon was fresh, the steamed mussels were tasty, and I especially couldn’t get enough of the perfectly smooth and tasty salmon patè - the plank was a flavorsome way to start. Our mains arrived next, and the peperonata pizza and my Gennard’s mixed grill was looking real good - my partner’s crab spaghetti looked pretty darn delicious too. Gennard’s mixed grill was sensational and totally recommended, the herby flash steak was tender and tasted wonderful, free ranged pork & fennel sausage was terrific and chicken was cooked to perfection with smoky chili ketchup that totally balanced everything to its best. I had a taste of my friend’s crab spaghetti which was divine too. Their chefs make the pasta fresh daily - no wonder their pasta had such a great texture and consistency. The pizza was good too, topped with chargrilled peppers, caramelized balsamic onions, olives, ricotta and rockets - we left no slice uneaten and were still excited for dessert! Our slices of heavenly cheesecake and tiramisu desserts were the perfect choice to end our delightful meal. I can’t rave highly enough of how good our lunch was. I say Wow Jamie!

GIZMOS Have you ever wished you had a handheld device that could scan, detect and identify anything you want? Well you’re in luck! Linksquare does exactly that. This device uses the age-old method of material analysis known as near-infrared spectroscopy to identify virtually anything – food, drinks, money, medications. You name it! The process involves shining a near-infrared light onto the surface of any given material, which causes the molecules to vibrate and bounce back light in their own unique way. This reflected light is then collected and passed through a spectrometer that separates the light out into all the different wavelengths it contains, letting Linksquare determine what it’s made of. You can use the scanner to check your foods freshness and sweetness to checking gold purity, medication identification, counterfeit currency detection and even illicit drug detection. Valued at $299. Dance Revolution #9 By Rio Tantomo
I
nto action. Every kid with a bowler hat on their head – rude boys, some punks who still dressed in their complete suit, loafers shoes, neckties and tattoos down from the neck ‘til their cold bottle grasping hand – approach the stage when The Eastbay start to slug out their first chord. Reggae on the stereo, punk rock in their belly, and let’s face it, it will be more respectable if your suspenders are bonded with sweat. Blood, sweat and tears, and more blood. Cause’ if you don’t, then you have to question your revolution. In Bali, where construction builds so fast and the traffic moves as fast as our legs stepping out, revolution becomes a potent language to unite the people – from liquor supper to coffee spilled glass; by those who really understand and the misunderstood people who could only sing.
68
www.thebeatbali.com
The Eastbay formed two years ago in 2016 in Denpasar. The members are OG, local punk veteran, Gapz – vocal/guitar, Wis – guitar, Gung Aak – bass, Metal – drum, Gung De – organ, were gathered from older bands such as Psychofun, Snap Rawks and The Hydrant. Although they admit the band name was not inspired by Rancid’s Journey to the End of the East Bay, but the Operation Ivy’s skanking mode telling the tail; the one that 2tone slick rocker-rude & reckless punx-skin weedeaters would love. All along pogo dancing with the Vespa boys – the ones who’ll vote Paul Weller for president – and Acapulco foreigners. Ska, ska punk, third wave or whatever you wanna call it, Eastbay’s fusion will always be identified with joviality and the honest message in their every song. The first single, Manusia Mesin (Human Machine)
FEATURE
is a fast tempo dance track guaranteed. Skankin’ pickle. A punk rock song about our egos, where it’s cycle has lowered the human level into some idiosyncratic robot slave. Like we have always been trapped in a consumptive way of life: an individual brat, without heart. Gapz said, “We’re all part of the human machine. We all take part in the destruction.” Yeah. We are polluting the air, faking the culture, screwing up paddies, forsaking people who cannot fit the rhythm. Including you – and you better grab it fast too instead of feeling paranoid, nervous and stuttery, to tend to playing it safe with your sold-out skeptical soul; the failure enculturation of post-mo generation. “Consumerism, egoism, cupidity is a crushing machine,” Gapz exclaimed as The Eastbay singing their resigned agenda.
Another Eastbay song titled Makan Uang (Eat Money) talks about hedonism and life supremacy, and Wanita Jalangku (My Moll) about top volume libido. The fact is The Eastbay is not in a hurry. Releasing an album is not a priority. They only focus on hitting every nearby gig while writing their own songs slowly one by one without any particular target. “No matter how hard you live, keep on dancing and having fun!” Gapz said. Dance can reveal everything mysterious that is hidden in music, and it has the additional merit of being human and palpable - French poet Baudelaire said that. So dance your life like nobody is watching and work like you aren’t doing it for money.
“What else could I say? I can only sing,” that’s one of the lines of the Manusia Mesin’s lyrics. www.thebeatbali.com

CD REVIEW
EDITORS
5/10
Violence Channeling the spirit of Joy Division (and the visuals of Kraftwerk), Editors took their rightful place among the cream of the late 00s new wave revivalists (you know, the ones that are so cool they don’t even need a ‘The’) with first two albums “The Back Room” (2005) and “An End Has a Start” (2007). Laced with darkly anthemic northern hymns, both albums received critical acclaim and turned the Stafford quartet into a stadium favourite – especially in mainland Europe. While 2009’s “In This Light and on This Evening” did throw up a couple of gems, on the whole it was too far removed from their SOP, with skewed synths replacing guitars and any semblance of melody all too often left out in the clamour to try something more experimental and raw. 2013’s “The Weight of your Love” went some way to navigating the void between old & new, but ultimately drowned itself out with too many self-indulgent power ballads and too much piano. So have they come back to their senses on album number six? In short, not really. Without too many expectations, they’ve walked the middle ground again of “The Weight of your Love”, delivering a
compromise between their melodic anthem choruses and Euro-synth sound. When Editors are good they are pretty much spectacular, but when they’re not, well – things just kind of mooch along inoffensively, and such is the case here. “Hallelujah (So Low)” is the loudest thing on the record and almost gets the bones rattling again a la “Sparks”, but things quickly taper off into mediocrity. Exhibit A is ‘No Sound But The Wind’: a reworked version of a fan favourite off the soundtrack to that Twilight twaddle in 2010 which curiously become a No.1 single in Belgium. It’s a boring lament to marching on against the odds or whatever, that wouldn’t be out of place coming out of the speakers at TopShop. More promising is the slowly building title track, and super chipper “Darkness at the Door”. It’s just not up there with the first two LPs (will they ever be again?), but “Violence” does have its moments of loveliness. There’s just not enough of them unfortunately. Dan Ashcroft

Now – April 10 Living Food Lab Living Food Lab hosts an exhibition by Windee Winata called “One”. The works shows how he connects with the unknown. These images are not always about the visible setting, but rather the spirit. The images are captured with a single long exposure which is unpredictable. He cannot fully control the outcome, but it seems to only emerge when the universe takes over. The process feels more like a fulfilling collaboration, whereas the results are often surprising and delightful. Furthermore, the images sees him long for simplicity in life, and it is all reflected perfectly in his photographs. Meanwhile, the locations he chooses to photograph are a consequence of his need of escape and be alone; the airy and beautiful places he visits as parts of his personal journey of solitude. Living Food Lab, Jl. Pantai Berawa No. 8, Canggu.
Now – April 15 ARTOTEL Sanur Collaborating with Cata Odata, ARTOTEL Sanur currently showcases the newest set of works by five male artists in an exhibition called “The Enigma: Looking at Life through Women’s Eyes”. The artists are Anas Etan, Awan Yozeffani, Djunaidi Kenyut, IBK Sindu Putra and Imam Sucahyo. This exhibition sees them attempt to share their visual stories about encounter, dialogue and connection with the women who inspire them. For them, it is a reminder of their respective daughters, partners, sisters, mothers, friends and lovers. Through the works, audiences are invited to look at the roles of these women within society, as well as the intricacies of their day-to-day lives where women are no longer being framed merely as a beautiful propaganda. Here, these artists shift the viewpoint by embracing the connection between men and women in certain frameworks and boundaries, as well as the social and cultural contexts they live in. ARTOTEL Sanur, Jl. Kusuma Sari No. 1, Sanur.
Now – April 15 ARTOTEL Sanur After a brief hiatus, including a recent visit back to her home town, Positive Negative Gallery welcomes the return of Tracy Hamer and her works to walls of Cocoon Beach Club. Themed “Gaze”, this exhibition sees the artist’s skillful figurative subjects which are splashed against an abstract background, expressing both perfection and chaos. Looks of classic seduction and old time glamour stare at the viewer from within a lively backdrop populated by color blocks, drips, dots and lines. Positive Negative Gallery, Cocoon Beach Club, Jl. Double Six, Seminyak.

ART
I Lope Bali Now – April 14 Rumah Sanur Creative Hub Balinese street artist, Slinat, currently takes over the space of Rumah Sanur Creative Hub for his showcase called “I Lope Bali”. In this showcase, he presents works that focus on technique and material exploration as he is interested in using environmental-friendly materials and reusable materials. Technically, he adapts the wheat paste process that he normally uses when making street artworks. This technique is then adapted for his displayed artworks, applied with secondhand materials like old traditional fabrics, woods and cardboards as the media. Here, he also explores his drawing skill with a ballpoint on an old and yellowed children’s coloring book, as well as using spray paint that has been cracked on a used drum cover and employing the China ink on canvas. | Rumah Sanur Creative Hub, Jl. Danau Poso No. 51A, Sanur
A Land to Remember Now – April 29 Griya Art Gallery Griya Art Gallery presents “A Land to Remember”, a painting exhibition by Balinese artist, Putu Bonuz Sudiana. His works sees him portray his childhood memories, as well as the nagging uneasiness which sprang from seeing the changes that took hold of his birth place, Nusa Penida. These matters are painted creatively in his abstract works, shown through his dynamic compositions which are also laden with strong emotional feelings. Expressive chiseled lines and sweeping colors are what he uses to express the abhorrence toward everything that stand against his conscience, replacing his anger and disappointment that can no longer be conveyed through words. | Griya Art Gallery, Griya Santrian, Jl. Danau Tamblingan 47, Sanur

ART
Djunaidi Kenyut
Life was tough for him in the beginning, but it has been the greatest source of inspiration for his art. Finding inspiration from a marginal life, as well as a life in urban society, his art contains stories about living, a view about community and a message about positivity. His works now displayed at ARTOTEL Sanur are no exception. Based on his daily observations of the Ubud market, these artworks show women with baskets on their heads, portraying women as figures who are not only elegant and gentle, but also embody strength and struggle in terms of working. See more of his works at the space until April 15.
Introduction. I was born in Surabaya. I first got an art education during the Reformation Era in 1997 when I met my friends from an art school in Surabaya. That year, those friends and some artists gathered at Balai Pemuda to create a movement for the reformation. I was still a street kid, growing up on the street to find money and food. Knowing these friends, I found many new things. I then decided to go back to school again, precisely at the High School of Arts in Surabaya. From there, I learned a lot. Tell us about your art. Many of my ideas come from the situations around me. So, they are the problems within myself, which I then transfer into canvas, paper or mixed media. Like other big cities, Surabaya is complex as there are many people in Indonesia moving in to find their fortune there. They settle in Surabaya to fight for themselves, and the problems have become appealing to me. These problems can also be seen on the city walls. Those walls record the problems in the city indirectly. For instance, when there is a wall that is close to a pair of lovers, the wall will possibly be ‘graced’ with their names or their feelings. Those things are written on that wall, either using markers, nails or spray paint. They don’t think about the aesthetic aspect as they only express what they have in heart and mind. When a wall is exposed to many people, it then automatically becomes full of words, layering one another. It becomes ‘greater’ when people think that the wall is seen as the center of public attention. Everyone
wants to draw, paste or put something on it, and what will happen next is chaos. This chaos is something that attracts me. The wall becomes abstract; it’s not nice to see, but it contains many stories. This experience is what I transfer to my canvas. Are my works becoming like these walls? No. Some works will still be clean. The ‘chaotic’ ones mean that they have complex problems in them. How would you describe your style? Many people say that it’s a street art, but there was one writer saying that street art is actually art on the street. So, it’s not street art for me as it has entered art spaces and galleries. However, my art might have some influences from street art. Moreover, I prefer to say that my art is urban as I have become a part of an urban community when I came to Bali and decided to settle in Ubud. What is art, and why art? I don’t really understand the meaning of art. However, from my childhood experience when I used to do outdoor jobs and meet many people, what is being said about art is actually something that can make us reflect on ourselves and our problems. From there, we can see that art can actually confront a peaceful aura and provoke. For me, art is a media where I can tell the public about myself. I find my own peace in art; by socializing with many people which then I transfer into my works. Can my work appease people? I don’t think so, if they don’t agree with what the works have. Nevertheless, these works can be the medium for them to think about what is and will be happening. www.thebeatbali.com

SPA
Reborn Reflexology & Healthcare
LOOK Having been around for a decade, Reborn Reflexology & Healthcare has been known as one the highest rated health and wellbeing destinations in town. Entering this spa, it has a very earthy feel to it, dominated by shades of brown and green, complete with wooden furniture and water features that create a natural harmony. Its three-story building houses 40 beds for full body massages and 20 reclining sofas for foot reflexology, as well as the newly-revamped Juice Corner to provide guests with fresh juices after their treatments. FEEL One of the most recommended treatments they have in the menu their signature “Tui Na Therapeutic Massage”, so we decided to give it a shot. Taking advantage of their Happy Hour, we also combined it with their additional treatment, which was the “Body Scrub” (203,850 for both). Just like other treatments, our session started off with a ritual foot bath to get us ready for the massage. We were then led to our bed, and here was where our revitalizing journey truly began. Combining Chinese and Balinese techniques, this massage was not only meant to relax and refresh, but also to heal the sore muscles and joints. Aiming so, it was no wonder if the massage was so much more detailed and intense, with firm yet gentle hand movements applied thoughtfully at different acupressure points of the body to facilitate the healing process. Starting from our back, this deep tissue massage was then applied to layers of muscles in our legs and hands, as well as in our head and shoulders. Following our therapeutic massage was a 30-minute body scrub that used a minty scrub to rub away the flaky skin, leaving it feeling soft, smooth and fresh. After all sessions

ended, a shower was then provided for us. As part of our Happy Hour service, we were also served with sugar-free juice to nicely wrap up our whole experience. INGREDIENTS They offer four massage oils to choose from, with the fragrances including sandalwood, frangipani, lavender and jasmine. Frangipani and jasmine oils are great for those who love refreshing aromas, whereas the lavender oil is great for relaxing. On the other hand, sandalwood is recommended for those who feel tired. Reborn Reflexology & Healthcare also only uses organic, allergy-free products for treatments, including their cool, frangipaniscented scrub which has a bit of mint essence. MAGIC Endless customers are sure signs of their good reputation, and it’s undoubtedly equal to the great services and offers they have. First of all, we loved how attentive their staff are, whereas their therapists are all professionallytrained. Secondly, they have many enticing promos, including their Happy Hour where you can get 40%off their treatments from 10 am to 1.45 pm, as well as their Fantastic Packages where you can get good deals on their twohour treatments. Last but not least, they are the one and only spa within the proximity that opens until 12 am, so it would be perfect for those in need of proper late night escape.
