Right in the middle of the Ku De Ta Day Party last Sunday at around 7.45pm I had just sat down to talk to some friends.

Next, it felt like my chair was beginning to move sideways, backwards and up, all at the same time. People began to scurry towards the beach side as the tremor mounted. The quake was over in seconds but it definitely left a lasting mark for everyone. Damage in North Lombok particularly was great and the relief program is still ongoing. Arshad Rizvi has been the main man behind the Ku De Ta high season shows for the past two years and is set to blow our minds again this year as we close in on High Season Bali 2018 and the annual Ku De Ta summer parties.

They are some of the most anticipated parties of the season on the island and not to be missed. Arshad has held the position of the music & events director for Ku De Ta since March 2016 and is the man to ask this question‌.

What can we expect at Ku De Ta for the High Season and in particular, the White Party this year?

Arshad: Well, High Season has been in full swing already. This high season we have invited a line-up of international artist during our sunset sessions each Friday and Sunday from 4.30 pm onwards. As Ku De Ta has had a significant music signature for almost two decades, we book our artists accordingly; the artists have appeared on the KDT CD compilation, we broadcast their tracks during our weekly radio show on 98.5 FM The Beat Radio Plus and our resident DJs have their

was looking for a chilled out place with great live music where I could bring my two kids for a nice dinner. Many of my friends recommended The Orchard Bar & Restaurant so my kids and I decided to give it a try.

Found the place relatively easy despite the location tucked a little off the main road of Jalan Nakula, Seminyak. We were greeted with friendly smiles and settled at the table closer to the stage where the band was just getting ready to jam. We felt quite a homely atmosphere there especially since after a minute of arriving my two kids already made friends with a lovely family on the table next to us.

I loved that our food arrived at the same time. My Gourmet double cheeseburger was decent, this stack of goodness made out of 180g prime Angus beef, streaky bacon, real cheddar cheese slices and 2 giant onion rings all packed into a sesame bun served with house wedges and mixed salad, yum!! My son loved his chicken wings - glazed in honey, sweet chili butter, topped with corriander, chili and garlic crisps... Tasty and spicy, matched perfectly to his taste. My youngest son’s much desired fish and chips served perfectly in quite a generous portion, of 200g of fresh meaty mahi mahi in a traditional Whitby beer batter, served with homemade chips and a side helping of mushy peas ( when available), tartar sauce, bread and batter scraps to top it off - he shared a nice bite and it was delightful - no wonder he ate it all up!

I ordered the Gourmet double cheesburger and coconut daiquiri, chicken wings for my eldest son while my youngest opted for his all time favorite, fish and chips.

My coconut daiquiri was so good, smooth and refreshing. Perfect way to start one fun evening. The band started playing and Holly molly!!! There’s some seriously outstanding

We spent the rest of the evening enjoying the live music and great conversation with our new friends who happened to mention about The Orchard‘s famous Sunday Roast with a choice of prime beef, roasted chicken or crackling pork and all the delicious sides, definitely try this next time!

FOOD SCOOP TWO FINGERS OPENS IN BERAWA After their grand opening last Saturday night, Two Fingers looks set to be the most happening bar/ Mexican restaurant on the Berawa strip. Their menu sticks to the roots of traditional Mexican food but twists things around with their inventive, home-made style. Their open-kitchen displays the magic, with home-made tortilla chipped nachos, jalapeno poppers, streetstyle tacos and chunky burritos. Not to mention the fully stocked bar serving some very classy cocktails. If you’re in the area and are looking for an interesting way to start the night, Two Fingers is a safe bet. And about the name? You’ll have to ask them yourselves.

FIRE AT THE W Seminyak’s Sunday brunch game is pretty strong but wait till you try the W Hotels Fire restaurant. Sunday Brunch At glow, COMO Shambhala Estate Far from the sizzling restaurants and nightclubs neighboring Bali’s seashore, in another part of the island, up the hill, there is a special place situated inside a tranquil jungle-covered riverbank near Ubud, named COMO Shambhala Estate. To support their offer of world-class health retreat programs, they provide a healthy and energising Sunday Brunch at Glow restaurant which includes raw options from the estate’s organic vegetable garden, freshly caught seafood and the finest imported grain-fed beef.

An open kitchen greeted us, which we quickly discovered serves a range of delicate and nutritious dishes, a trademark of Como Shambhala cuisine. Kicking off the gastronomic brunch experience in a green forest atmosphere surrounding the space, they offered us a variety of fresh garden and pasture produce.

Avocado and soy bean dip, chia seed crisps, with marinated tomato, grilled zucchini and red pepper salad with feta, mint and pine nuts was just the beginning. A variety of steamed dishes like shiitake mushroom, cabbage and tofu dumplings, as well as lobster, chicken, and spinach dumplings were next. Straight from the grill they served tiger prawns, marinated lamb skewers, and wagyu beef sliders. As for local specialties, they are serving the likes of mixed sate, grilled pepes of kingfish, and stir-fried tempeh. Finishing the brunch, the multiple chef’s selection of sweet treats was delivered unabashedly to our table with Quinoa and pumpkin pudding, chocolate fondant, young coconut jelly, rose scented meringue, passion fruit curd and berry salad.

What a delicious and inventive brunch!

DJANGO DJANGO Marble Skies

Bands traditionally bristle at the idea of being “put in a pigeonhole”, the very prospect of not only denting their self-image as deathless originals but also threatening to trap them in a creative prison. Since the release of their self-titled debut in 2012, Django Django have tried hard to swerve easy categorization, their music a free-spirited swiping at different genres: Krautrock, psychedelia, synth-pop.

Their third album keeps up this brisk, choppy approach: “Tic Tac Toe” is a plaid-shirted dub hoedown, “Champagne” sounds like a garage strut through Season of the Witch, and the wistful Ace of Bass shuffle of “Surface to Air” even shakes up the very format of the band, featuring Slow Club’s Rebecca Taylor on vocals. In a real coup for connoisseurs of eclecticism, “Sundials” is built around a piano

line by Czech-born composer Jan Hammer, the man behind the Miami Vice theme.

Ye neatly executed as it all is, Marble Skies can start to sound like a stylistic sleight-of-hand, the hiccupping, yelping shifts and pitches a distraction that masks the lack of emotional core. It’s only past the halfway point, when they loosen up with the Numanoid electro-pop of “Beam Me Up” that the album begins to feel more than an exercise in just being a very smart band. Having proved they can blur the boundaries, now they need work on definition.

Now- August 25th Neka Art Museum “Galungan Cina”, an exhibition presented by Segara Lor community consisting of Art Major alumni of Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha, is not all about the festivities of the Chinese New Year. The title itself is meant to represent how the Balinese see and interpret the presence of other entities coming from outside their homeland. Now- September 9th Titian Art Space For the first time, Titian Art Space is going to display the works of the late I Dewa Putu Mokoh on their walls. Born in 1934, he has displayed his art pieces in many group exhibitions around the world such as Australia, USA, Japan, Singapore, Finland, Holland, Denmark, Germany and Italy. He has also conducted a solo exhibition in the Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan in 1995.

His paintings are credited for displaying intimacy, sensuality and a yearning for the days of childhood, often with a humorous element. In the exhibition called “Mokoh for The House of Mondo”, 22 of Mokoh’s ideas from the year 1990 until 1992 were poured onto canvases full of beautiful soft color and uniquely formed objects.

Purwita Sukahet Dewa Gede Purwita or Purwita Sukahet as people call him is not only putting his mind into the visual component of his painting, but also a literacy component within his artworks which is also supported by fellow artists united under the roof of Gurat Institute. Purwita is now working on painting, sculpting, and writing inside his own home studio while teaching in Bali Design Institute or Sekolah Tinggi Desain Bali.

How did it all start?

Initially, after I graduated from high school I didn’t get my parents approval to get into an art major in college. They wanted me to be a teacher instead. Because my parents blocking my way to get accepted in the college of my choice in Denpasar, I went to Singaraja without ever stepping foot into that city. However, later I got accepted in an art teaching major. During my time in college, I was attracted to Basuki Abdulah’s work, then I got to know Affandi from a visual art magazine. Then my interest in art was getting more serious during my last semester in college.

What kind of effect did Basuki Abdulah and Affandi have on you?

In my opinion, Basuki Abdulah and Affandi are the pioneers of Indonesian painter.

I adore Basuki because he was a strong realist and Affandi because he had a great explorative capability. Furthermore, I am also inspired by the work of Balinese maestros I Gusti Nyoman Lempad and I Ketut Gede Singaraja, a revolutionary painter who was friend of Van der Tuuk in the mid-1800s. For me, all of them have some gifted intelligence.

How are the characteristics of your paintings?

In the past two years, I started to get bored with my artistic achievements and they are becoming a bit stagnant. That’s why I often make a visit to some senior

painters such as Nyoman Erawan, Made Budhiana, Lekung, Agung Darma Yudha, and Dewa Ngakan Ardana. By keeping in touch with them, I can refill some more enthusiasm inside my head to keep exploring painting. From them, I also understand that painting technique is not all about visual but also about its literary point of view. After that I move my painting characterization from its visual into its literary point of view. Explore more on the reason why I choose the media such as canvas, paper, colouring tool, etc, so that I’m not pegged to make my art unique solely on its visualization but also its meaning. However, I have one essential element on my paintings which is the line.

About the paintings displayed on Galungan Cina exhibition?

I have two artworks in the current exhibition which are called ‘Blue’ and ‘Unconscious’. One artwork is three metres long and displayed on a table, the other artworks is hanging on the wall and one meter square wide. I don’t want my art to be a cliché things about China but I try to keep some Chinese elements in them like adding Chinese coins or kepeng and keep the important Chinese colours like red, gold and yellow. Then, after making sure that we are in our most comfortable position while facing downwards on the massage bed, the therapist starts their descent with light pressure on the legs, heading toward the back then slowly accelerated into a more complex technique with a combination of sliding movements.

While facing upward, we are pampered by a soothing and pain relieving set of massages on our shoulder and head. After the body massage is over, for a final touch, the therapists lead

us to sit on the bed for a pounded massage technique to our shoulders. To finish it all off, a cup of warm ginger tea is offered to help us feel reenergized.

INGREDIENTS There are three choices of oil provided for the Balinese massage treatment which are based on the combination of olive oil and coconut oil.
