Wake Up Call

Jeremie Lannoy

Tove Lo

52

www.thebeatbali.com

The W Hotel’s huge, new worldwide event, Wake Up Call is now just two weeks away from being held in the grounds of W Retreat Bali. We hunted down Jeremie Lannoy, who has recently joined W Bali–Seminyak as the Director of Marketing & Communications. Belgium born, Jeremie has worked for Marriott International in the Middle East, Hilton Hotels in the UK, before arriving here to our sunny shores just a couple of months ago. What better man to ask about this new two day and night event coming to W Bali this Oct 5 & 6.

Angus & Julia Stone

FEATURE The two day music festival will include big name artists as well as new/next talents and some of the activation we create for the guests: yoga and fuel program, exclusive drinks and food creations, the return of the 180 degree camera booth everyone loved at SPF and the meet and greet with the artists we mentioned earlier. Nora En Pure

Sam Feldt

You have some major acts involved. Who are they and what are the highlights? Definitely the two main acts Tove Lo and Angus & Julia Stone. We have seen a lot of comments and positive reactions for these two acts and from different publics, which is great! Then we have Sam Feldt who I really like and I would say FKJ, Nora En Pure and Nightmares On Wax are the next in line when it comes to the reactions we are receiving. I believe we have a solid line-up catering for the different tastes and people we have on the Island with pop sensations, solid folk and electronic performers, without forgetting Kimokal, the local talent!

Fkj Jeremie, briefly, what is Wake Up Call all about? A bit of history please. Wake Up Call is the world’s first-ever hotel music festival, the global initiative program that will stop in three W hotels this year, W Hollywood, W Barcelona and will close out at W Bali–Seminyak on 5th & 6th October, 2018. WAKE UP CALL takes the festival experience off the field and onto fabulous hotel grounds, such as ours! Room packages are available exclusively for members of Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) and Marriott Rewards, which anybody is welcome to join, and we sell daily and weekend passes for guests not staying with us during the weekend. A big component is also the ability for the loyalty members to bid their points on Moments, which are exclusive opportunities to meet the headliners in private parties, or have sessions in our Sound Suite with DJs performing that weekend such as Sam Feldt or Nara En Pure!

I see there is a Wet Deck and a Woo deck. What’s that about? There will be two stages: the Wet Deck is our pool which will be partially covered and is the main stage; while Woo Deck is the second stage at Woobar, where people are already used to dancing to the beats of our residents and international guest DJs all year long. How much are the tickets and where do we get them? There are two ways to get tickets! The first one is to book a room for the festival, which comes with two weekend passes and gives you access to a few more activities we were discussing earlier. Then there are the day passes for all who will not have the chance to stay with us the whole weekend. For those we have early bird day passes at IDR 800,000 and early bird weekend passes at IDR 1,300,000. All the info and links to buy tickets are available on the Wake Up Call web site www.wakeupcallfest. com/en/w-bali. We also have VIP tables available, but for those you will have to get in touch with the hotel directly as their numbers are limited. Those interested can send an email to bf.wbali@whotels.com. Cheers. www.thebeatbali.com

I

f you haven’t been to Finns VIP Beach Club already, do yourself a favor and go now... You can thank me later.

My friend and I visited at lunch time to see what they have on offer and we were very impressed with the whole set up. The staff escorted us to the Pavilion and sat us at a fine table overlooking the ocean. We started off the right way. I got myself the Mango Tango mocktail Rp 75K which was not only good and fresh looking - this slushy mix of mango juice, fresh lychee fruit and juice and grenadine also tasted seriously fabulous! My friend got himself a Bali On Fire cocktail Rp 175K, a refreshing mix of Svedka vodka, Cointreau, fresh tangerine juice, local chili, kaffir lime and mint leaves. A glass of water was already being poured as we sat down, the service was so good that the glass never hit halfway. The restaurant has a fantastic menu with an amazing variety of food and drinks and we tried some of the best. Our starters arrived in pretty wooden platters. Burrata Installata Rp 185K was phenomenal, the fresh burrata melting right in my mouth - so delicious, and came with cherry tomato, marinated artichoke, olive

60

www.thebeatbali.com

tapenade, grissini and toasted sourdough drizzled with virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar and fresh basil. Ours came with Paris ham Rp 205K - smoked salmon is also available. Our grilled octopus Rp 95K was divine and I especially loved the fresh kimchi it is served with. Truffle & Parmesan Rp95K with sauteed mushrooms, truffle oil, grana padano and arugula was simply yum. Our quinoa bowl Rp 175K and Spicy tuna rolls Rp135K were served alongside the Chicken Tandoori Rp 175K. Now, I eat quinoa bowl’s a lot and I can safely say this one was done perfectly, especially since it’s filling was some of my favorite ingredients like shredded chicken, roast pumpkin, edamame, grilled halloumi cheese, pickled ginger, water spinach, kale pesto, cashews, pine nuts, spring onions, coriander, coconut oil and lime. The spicy tuna roll was fresh, spicy and delicious, which is exactly the reason why I wasn’t sharing a slice. The Tandoori chicken was absolutely beautiful, marinated chicken thigh was tender and delicious loved what they’ve done with it, we decided to get beef vindaloo Rp 275K and garlic naan Rp 45K - I promised to share this time. The braised wagyu beef beef brisket in its spicy and aromatic sauce was so juicy and tender,

FOOD perfect to pair with the garlic naan - it was sublime, we both absolutely loved it. Time for dessert, I treated myself with a Lemon tartlet which was refreshingly sour, sweet, creamy and simply delicious. My friend had a yummy Dark chocolate tartlet with 70% valrhona chocolate with peanut praline and topped with vanilla ice cream, sweet sweet end to our fabulous lunch. Both desserts are Rp 65K. We both were totally pleased with our dining experience, it’s not often you can get equally amazing food from different ethnicities at the same place. Pavilion at Finns VIP achieved that plus more. It was probably one of the most exclusive dining experience we’ve had. The bottom line is, you can expect a next level experience on everything at this newly minted Finns VIP Beach Club. You could call it the ultimate vacation goal where you can dine and laze by the ocean with nothing short of spectacular views, with the best service and cusine. Finns VIP Beach Club facilities consist of beachfront and poolside day beds, oceanfront sandbar & dining, Belvedere rooftop bar, dining pavilion, poolside champagne bar, expansive manicured lawns and ocean spa. Pavilion is open daily 9am – 11pm. Note that smart casual attire is required from 6pm until close and if you happen to wear swimwear, sports or one of those alcohol branded singlets or shirts - since they are not permitted, you may borrow one from the reception or even purchase one at the retail shop they have onsite.

Happy Hour is available here too - Buy 1 get 1 free of selected beverages at 7 - 9pm. A minimum spend applies before 7pm: Rp 750K per person for single day bed, Rp 3 million for double beds up to six people, Rp 500K for grazing on the green up to six people and no minimum spend for the restaurant and bar. 100% minimum spend credited towards food and beverage. There is a whole lot more info on their website, which explains how it all works. www.finnsbeachclub.com/vip We’ll just say Finns VIP Beach Club, from the moment you walk in you will notice that you have walked into one of the coolest places in town. DATE FOR 2 Sake no Hana

Jl. Belimbing Sari, Uluwatu, Bali In my opinion, Japanese is the perfect cuisine to share with your significant other. But if you want to truly impress, Omnia’s Sake no Hana restaurant goes above and beyond in setting, service and most importantly, amazing food. We were seated at the ocean side edge of the restaurant, overlooking the glamorous dayclub and panoramic views to the horizon. Our first course, the Hamachi Namawasabi (295k) and Australian Wagyu Tataki (270k) were a strong indication of things to come, both melting-in-your-mouth, flavour bomb dishes that left us excited for the next course. The sushi platter was a custom-built tray of some of their finest maki rolls, all of which were totally orgasmic. We could have been happy with just that but it was time for the main event. I won’t go into too much detail but WOW! The Chilean Sea Bass (490k) was incredible, served in Champagne Yuzu Miso marinade, one bite of this dish and my perception on what fish can taste like totally changed. Not to mention the Australian Wagyu Sumiyaki Marble 7 (750k) that came after it. A mouth-watering, mind bending array of food to say the least. Dessert was as impeccable as its predecessors, we managed to fit in the Toro Matcha (120k) and the Chocolate Peanut Crunch (120k). It’s safe to say, if you bring your date for a meal at Sake no Hana, you’ll be experiencing fireworks in both your tummy and love life!

Special Sunday Brunch At The Joglo If this Sunday you plan to treat your family to a tranquil day of relaxation and delicious food, The Joglo’s brunch is the perfect choice. Inside this wooden traditional Javanese building, you can eat, shop, and stretch under the same roof as it offers the comfort of a café, playground, whole food market, and pilates studio. Every Sunday, the Joglo delivers a package that includes a famous Indonesian Rijstafel Feast with free flow iced tea or a complimentary glass of Sangria. Step into the Joglo and sit in the open air of the al fresco café while you wait for your extravagent main course. Give yourself a treat with a plate of delightful fried tofu delivered with spicy soy dipping sauce. Not long after, a streaming line of Rijstafel bowls will be on their way. We tried a bit of everything from the fourteen little bowls of traditional Indonesian dishes, including spicy meat, coco chicken in Balinese sauce, chicken lemon grass, banana stem soup, sautéed eggplant and spinach, and grilled tofu in banana leaf. All items are cooked and served in a very Indonesian way with flavours like it was coming straight from an Indonesian home kitchen. Closing the brunch off is an array of the famous ‘Pisang Goreng’ or Banana Fritters as a sweet and very crunchy dessert. The Sunday Brunch is priced at IDR 145K++ per person with minimum two people sitting for the brunch. Free flow of iced tea and Sangria are included in the price along with the breezy space, playground, garden, and market to roam around as they were your own. Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri Barman: Juli Parwata If you’re ever feeling hot and thirsty whilst wandering the Legian strip, chances are you will stumble across Vi Ai Pi restaurant. The Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri (IDR 79K ++) is the perfect drink to get your night started right, especially with barman Juli Parwata. This strawberry flavored piece of perfection embodies the mixture of light sweet Captain Morgan White Rum, a generous amount of crushed strawberries, cointreau liquor, and a dash of acidic lime juice. All ingredients are blended then served to your table with the bright pink colour, stunning you from a distance. A drink that is not just fruity but also tasty, light and sweet. Ask for Juli and give it a try next time you are down Kuta / Legian way.

CD REVIEW

acoustic Jam.

PAUL WELLER True Meanings

It’s been over twenty-five years since the exJam and Style council ‘Modfather’ sat down with an acoustic guitar and knocked out the beautifully rustic “Wild Wood”. An incredible twelve albums of indie, dub, spiky pop and outright weird experimentalism later and Paul Weller is apparently once again ready to revisit those same bucolic themes of love, loss and straight-up songwriting that characterized his acclaimed sophomore LP. The fourteenth studio album from Woking’s favourite curmudgeon is a gently introspective set of songs - largely just Weller and his guitar - picking and strumming quietly over softly tapped drums and lush orchestration. Similar as “True Meanings” is to “Wild Wood”, the album does come as a surprise given his

recent output, particularly the punky “Sonik Kicks” and frenzied “Saturn’s Pattern” (both excellent listening BTW). Weller sings with a newfound delicacy and gracefulness that recalls early Cat Stevens and James Taylor – his voice has mellowed nicely as he enters his 60th year. Glide is an aptly named meander with hints of English Folk, while the gorgeous Mayfly feels effortless - a definite high point. A smattering of guests (Lucy Rose, Noel Gallagher, Martin Carthy) lend their lyrical and songwriting chops to round out an album that just goes to show Weller has more tricks up his sleeve than most out there. Simply wonderful. Dan Ashcroft

CANCER ( 21 June – 22 July )

You will have an interesting couple of weeks. You should expect some obstacles in advancing your projects. However, there would be no reason for despair if you well understand the occurring processes. There will be eventually so many ways to overcome such obstacles. Your romantic and creative worlds expand and grow this period. If single, you may find a person that will awake your dormant passions. You are learning to express yourself playfully and creatively without apology and more willing to take some personal risks in order to do so. Favorable Dates : 21, 25, 30 Favorable Colors : Green & Blue

You’re in a period of reflection and preparation, so take things as slowly as you can. Sacrifices may need to be made when it comes to your relationships as you are required to be sympathetic and helpful now. Career related work might become too complicated to handle. Business pursuits might also meet with unwanted impediments. Keep a tab of your financials. Try best to use the time at your disposal effectively. Mental health shall be in harmony once you wean off your bad feelings and channel it towards positive interests development. Favorable Dates : 21, 22, 1 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Blue

TAURUS ( 20 April – 20 May )

LEO ( 23 July – 22 August )

Your goals are clearer and motivation is easy to find. While you may start the period with money as your main focus, communications, technology, travel, and your community could become more prominent in the second half. Perseverance and consistency at work will pay off if supported by like-minded people and if you do not hesitate to ask for help when the need arises. Romantic relationships entered into during this time will be enjoyable and will last long. However, there are likely ruptures in families where relationships are far from ideal. Favorable Dates : 20, 22, 30 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Blue

Financial matters seem very promising this period, but be careful that you don’t overdo spending or purchase large ticket items that you are likely to regret later. This may be a good phase with lots of communications and pleasantries, and good for doing something new with your look. You could achieve positive results within a short time if you will direct all efforts in those areas that at this stage are important parts of your earthly existence with determination. In relationships, the period will end with incredible joyful closeness. Favorable Dates : 23, 28, 2 Favorable Colors : White & Red

GEMINI ( 21 May – 20 June )

VIRGO ( 23 August – 22 September )

You might enjoy financial benefits from increased attention to work in. You can be very focused on what truly matters to get ahead. Others take special interest in you. You are looking for more authenticity in your associations in general, weeding out those connections that feel too superficial. You are bound to make some fortunate connections that benefit you for periods to come. Favorable Dates : 21, 24, 2 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Red

This period gives you a chance to find a new path for development, get rid of bias and sharpness in judgments in respect of those people who do not share your ideas. While your career initiatives remain on the front burner, pressure to perform is reduced and your social life begins to take more priority. You’re in high demand with friends and group activities can keep you pleasantly busy this period. Romantic proclamations or relationship challenges are likely. Trust issues are in play. Favorable Dates : 24, 28, 1 Favorable Colors : Blue & Red

LIBRA ( 23 September – 22 October )

CAPRICORN ( 22 December – 19 January )

You are taking special care of your personal possessions and you feel more stable on practical levels. This is an excellent period for financial rewards, promotional activities and career advancement. Optimum intake of food and good rest shall see you through the year in the pink of your health. Romantic opportunities might come from people of an entirely different background or culture, or through education and travel, this period. You are especially organized in your home life and more compassion and tolerance emerge in your relationships with family. Favorable Dates : 24, 25, 29 Favorable Colors : Blue & Red

This period brings heightened emotions and personal revelations, generally relationship-related. Romance begins to heat up and some of you are pursuing it more assertively, and others are experiencing ups and downs. Avoid new relationships that seem to be inviting trouble. You should not hesitate in starting projects you have in mind. By being organized and clearly understanding the ultimate goal, you can achieve incredible results. New adventures and experiences can suddenly seem desirable after many periods of being quite content following simple routines. Favorable Dates : 19, 25, 2 Favorable Colors : Red & Grey

SCORPIO ( 23 October – 21 November )

AQUARIUS ( 20 January – 18 February )

This period is strong for gaining support, both financial and moral. Your powers of persuasion are excellent. Close partnerships grow, and some of you might form new partnerships. You take better charge of your finances, particularly money shared with others or derived from other sources than your personal income. You will concentrate on the work at hand and get goodwill from authorities and peers. Sort out your colleagues for long term relationships. In romance, newcomers will have a turbulent period of reconciliation, parting and new reconciliations. Experienced ones will behave quieter. Favorable Dates : 20, 25, 29 Favorable Colors : Blue & White

The period will witness situations that will push you to act spontaneously and contrary to your previously scheduled plans. If you will be able to resist general panic, your business will evolve as was planned. While your emotional life is a little more complicated, you’re also braver and more confident on a personal level. As confident and energetic as you feel, however, avoid taking on too many new projects, as you’re likely to feel their weight in the last week of the period. Moderation and focus are keys to success now. Favorable Dates : 19, 23, 26 Favorable Colors : Red & Green

SAGITTARIUS ( 22 November -21 December )

PISCES ( 19 February – 20 March )

Career and finances are especially strong, but be careful that you don’t let runaway optimism lead you to take on more projects than you can handle, as you’ll likely feel the pressure in the second week of this period. You can successfully combine practical matters and more fanciful ones. With focus, you can make enormous progress in your work. The single ones will go for a journey in search of unearthly love, which will not last long. However, you will for a long time search for the only one with whom you will be happy throughout your life. Favorable Dates: 21, 23, 30 Favorable Colors : Red & Green

You’re winding down from an especially hectic period, but life definitely isn’t slowing. There are more errands to run, busy mental work, and plenty of diverse activities for you. Your heart, however, is with home and family and making changes that help to bring more peace and beauty to your domestic life. Those of marriageable age will finally propose to their loved ones or accept love proposals from their loves. Unmarried Pisces will fall in love and spend the happiest period of their life. Favorable Dates : 20, 27, 30 Favorable Colors : Blue & Yellow

Now- September 30th ARTSPACE - Artotel Sanur Teaming up with Nyaman Gallery Seminyak, ARTOTEL Sanur proudly presents a Berlin renowned artivist, Mein Lieber Prost, to expose his never-before-seen series of artworks at ARTOTEL Sanur- Bali’s ARTSPACE, today until September 30th. Coming from Indonesia, Mein Lieber Prost had spread his mission which is “to shine the light on the similarities in differences and the differences in similarities” all over Europe’s finest cities including Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Paris, Milano and Bristol. A man which never shows his face to the world has satires within his artwork which were meant to raise awareness of an individual in their surroundings and the corrupted reality of this world. Watch and see the works of a ‘happy anarchist’ moving beyond the streets and into the studio inside this ‘Always and Never The Same’ exhibition. Jl. Kusuma Sari No.1, Sanur, Denpasar

Now- October 2nd The Oberoi Bali The Oberoi Bali returns with its latest exhibition by Ugo Untoro. Ugo, one of the major artists in Indonesia, has exhibited his works throughout Indonesia and abroad. He has also earned The Best Artist and Work award by the Indonesian National Gallery in 2007. Ugo makes ‘bizarre’ paintings that can be interpreted in many ways depending how people view them. Ugo wants to tell people about love in so many forms. His work somehow tells people his love for angles, love for tears, and love for loneliness. For him, Love is the feeling that controls the heart, muscles and bones to work. Whatever shape and colour love is. Jl. Kayu Aya, Seminyak, Kuta

Now- October 10th Maya Sanur Resort and Spa The aptly named for the moment, Earthquake, a group exhibition hosted by Maya Sanur Resort and Spa, intends to remind people to create an “earthquake” in themselves by igniting all inspiration through art. The exhibition will display the works of 11 local artists including Ping Ping, I Wayan Piki Suyersa, and Dewa Made Johana. The artworks, through many of their styles, are speaking about Mother Nature. At the end of the day, Mother Nature will always hold the key to life. Everything about her is intentional. Every drop of rain, every storm, every natural disaster happens for a reason. Earthquakes will not shatter us forever, but it will bring us opportunity to rise up together. And we assure that this art vibration will always keeps us alive! Jl. Danau Tamblingan No. 89M, Sanur

Sensibility Line Now- October 31st Griya Art Gallery Spontaneity and expression of lines are the force in Made Wiradana’s artworks. The wildness of his finger is able to control lines to flow freely without being limited by normal narrative. The secret to his works is the mastery of making incised lines, and creating accents using colour blocking. This is where his sensibility comes to life, blending the composition between line, texture, field and color. Come and see the work of a true talent who had earned Philip Morris Art Awards (1995, 1998), Belgium Ambassador Art Award (2006), Beijing Art Institute for Art Appreciation (2017) and this year’s Gold Medal Asian Art Bienial, Hongkong. | Jl. Danau Tamblingan No.47, Sanur, Denpasar

Mutter Tattwa Now- October 1st Museum Puri Lukisan Ida Bagus Sena, originally from Tebasaya Ubud, is one of the few young Balinese artists who still hold tightly to traditional techniques. His talent was inherited from the greatness of his grandfather, Ida Bagus Made Kembeng - a painter whose work received a global appreciation at the Colonial exhibition in France in 1937. See Sena mould his agitation, anxiety, unity and thought towards various interpretations of Hindu ceremonies into a delicate painting dominated with earth colour at Ubud’s loveliest landmark, Museum Puri Lukisan. |Jl. ART

Ping Ping When we see the artworks made by Ping Ping, we can immediately spot the bright color and feel the joy in it. Then, we heard his story behind each of the paintings and it made us realize that a little daily problem is a result of a big human ego. Before October 10th, come to Maya Sanur and listen to the story yourself so you will understand more.

How did your painting journey begin? Ever since I was a child, when I was in school, I was always good at art and didn’t do well in other subjects. This went on until high school and to higher education. During my studies, I got a lot of support from my teachers. One teacher even told me that I have to be an artist when I grow up. That really boosted my confidence. Fast forward after high school, I only applied to one University which had an art major. There were a lot of ups and down during my college years. I failed many courses except art and then I stopped going to classes for about two months. However, I regained my strength through my lecturer and family. Using that support, I managed to stand out from the others. Even many of my colleagues gave up art and got jobs in other fields. When was your first exhibition? It was in 2009. I did an exhibition with eight of my friends in a group called ‘PENA’ which is now disbanded. It was also the first time that I sold a painting to someone. Little did I know that he was a big thing in the art world. He came from Netherland and went back to his country with my paintings. From that time, my painting have been touring around Europe. They even got into a big event called Art Basel. I got a lot of money from painting at

that time. Sadly, it shifted my direction of being an artist from art creation into money making. Then In 2013, I stopped making art, totally, because I got mad at myself. In 2015, I tried to paint again but this time it was purely for art and not money. What is the concept of your painting? Each of my paintings tells a story. I turn stories of my everyday problems into paintings with simple techniques and colors. My friends say that my painting is satire and can be offensive. They just haven’t heard the stories from my point of view. I never ever meant to criticize other people through my art. It was all just about me, a critic to me and how I live this life. About your painting in Maya Sanur exhibition? I have three paintings hanging on Maya Sanur’s gallery wall which are a series of paintings of a man with a facemask on. It was inspired by my two sisters whom I’m really close to. They keep making me put the facemask on my face. It then generated an idea for my artwork. Why would men rarely expose themselves doing a beauty routine? It’s now time for people to realize that men also need emancipation. [I like that. Ed.]

A huge glass window around the main area allows you to take a peek at the greenery of the hotel’s tropical garden while lounging. FEEL Among the many treatments offered, a 60 minute facial session called Face the Music (IDR 500K++) from the Rhythm and Motion spa arrangement was chosen. The arrangement is a ground breaking package of pampering which combines the ripple of bass shaker through the massage table and the art of pressure and pattern from the masseuse. Starting the session, we were offered to choose our treatment music while we sip the sweet cold ginger lime and honey drink. There are four choices of music coming from world musicians composing healing and calming melodies. Then, as soon as we lay on the bed, the therapists starts the facial with a face cleanser. Feeling light and clean, our face then gently scrubbed with a refined scrubbing cream. Proceeded into a series of a cooling sensation of toner, facial wash and gentle massages with a massaging stone starting from the forehead to the chin. The next touch for the face is a face mask made from water lilies. Thereafter, while the mask formula is working on our face, the therapists works on our hands with a scrubbing session using a papaya scrub. Last, the therapist took off our mask, splashed a bit of toner, gave a few tender shoulder and head massages and we we’re ready to glow.

INGREDIENTS For Face the Music, Rock Spa uses a soothing mask made of water lily and aloe vera. For those oily face sufferers, don’t worry as this face mask will absorb those bothersome oils as well as calm and rehydrate the skin. Empire Fit Club Bali

N

ew gyms have been popping up in Bali for the past few years, mainly all over the Canggu area. While new trendy workouts seems to be born every week and the range of different training sessions from Crossfit, MMA and the many fusions between becoming easier to access, Bootcamp training remains a favorite for many, including myself. This military style training known to be one of the best results driven types of workouts that challenges every muscle in your body. And although it can get quite intense, Bootcamp training caters to all fitness levels and abilities - as long as you have the will to start and do your best! Now, almost every gym offers Bootcamp like classes but if you want to have a real experience of a good ol’ bootcamp training with an actual former military person leading the class then checkout Empire Fit Club Bali.

76

www.thebeatbali.com

Elbert Tiwa, Founder and Head Coach of Empire Fit Club is a former active duty US Marine who during his service was in charge in leading Bootcamp training in the field - which makes the class here more of a genuine bootcamp than any other. Elbert who is currently an ambassador and athlete for Under Armour is a Combat Fitness Instructor and specializes in high intensity tactical training. Elbert has always been the athletic type and passionate about fitness and prior to finishing his service in the military, he had planned on materializing his dreams to build a gym in the US. Though the plans were all set, his decision to finally take the piled up annual vacation leave he never had a chance to use took him in the other direction. His decision took him to Jakarta which is where the Empire Fit Club journey started. During his time in the big durian, Elbert failed in finding a gym matching his criteria and that, to him was the sound of opportunity knocking the door - despite finding out later that starting a business in Jakarta was a lot more complicated due to so many reasons including

HEALTH

the common lease term that required him to pay a couple years up front for the space he wanted - which he couldn’t afford, he answered that opportunity anyway. Elbert took the leap of faith by starting it small through his Military Fitness Basic Training which was established in Jakarta in 2013 where he slowly but surely brought people together to sweat it out and eventually built a community of like minded individuals. As the business grew, the opportunity to expand finally took Elbert to the Island of the Gods where he built Empire Fit Club Bali. Situated in Kerobokan, right in between the two hip areas of Canggu and Seminyak, and not only attracting visiting tourists, the gym gets packed daily with local fitness enthusiasts. Their Grand Opening was on August 17, hosting an amazing bunch together to train, eat and celebrate Indonesia’s Independence Day. It was a festive Grand Opening event, despite the rainy and stormy weather.

Empire Fit Club Bali offers all the astonishing benefits of Bootcamp at their spacious semi open gym facility with a beautiful view of the rice fields. Empire Fit is equipped with great quality equipment for those wanting to do other things other than Bootcamp as well. Those who fancy doing crossfit, the space has got everything you could possibly think of, from barbell sets, kettle bells, wall balls, rowing machines, treadmills as well as assault bikes are all on the line up for you. In addition, their amazing obstacle course is equipped with monkey bars, cargo net climb, rope swings and much more - set up exactly how we imagine military personnel do their training. An indoor group class space in the back has glass walls so you can still be training indoors while enjoying beautiful views at all times. While the obstacle course field is probably my favorite section they have, the open space overlooking the rice fields is totally bomb too. Imagine doing yoga here. In other words, Empire fit offered the best of both worlds, more than enough space and great quality equipment for everyone to train and an incredible view to unwind. That’s not all, they are also equipped with onsite accommodation for those who are interested in their retreat program! Bootcamp Class at Empire Fit Club is available on Monday - Friday at 7am, 9am and 5.30pm and Saturday - Sunday at 9am. The gym opens at 7am - 7pm on Monday - Friday and 8am - 5pm on Saturday - Sunday. Don’t miss out Sunday Funday at Empire Fit Club Bali this September where they are offering a free Bootcamp class at 9am every sunday! Check out the website for their updated Memberships options and make sure to follow their social media to keep yourself updated with their membership promos and fun events. Empire Fit Club Bali Jl.
