First we would like to offer our condolences to the family and friends, and also Bali’s live music family over the loss of singer/guitarist/songwriter Aray Aulay who passed away last Friday, Sept 28. His pleasant, friendly demeanour and musical talent shall be missed by many. We are also still reeling from what happened the same day in Central Sulawesi’s Palu and Dongalla region. We are hoping and praying that that will be last of these occurrences for some time to come. Meanwhile, the party goes on as it normally does. This week’s huge event is the Wake Up Call Festival at W Bali Seminyak, which, pound for pound, could be considered to be as big as any festival we’ve ever had here on the island. It really is quite enormous and literally has something for everyone. The latest live music sounds to the latest electronic sounds on two stages from early till late for two days and nights, and that’s this weekend October 5 and 6. Get your tickets, your dancing shoes on and check inside for the full details. We will see you there! It’s hard to believe that Hard Rock Café has been on the island for 25 years already, but it’s true, and they are celebrating on Friday with Andre and the Backbone playing live. Sure to be huge. Other major events next week are Yellow Claw, who are one of the biggest, banging DJ acts doing the world circuit, and they will be at Omnia Dayclub on Saturday Oct 13. Marc Romboy on the same night at Woobar. Also, watch out for Sean Kingston doing his very entertaining show at Engine Room on Wednesday Oct 17. Keenhouse This Weekend

Ken Rangkuty alias Keenhouse will be in Seminyak this weekend and playing at The Beat Cafe together with Ibu Disco from Rumah Dua Tiga a Japanese Indonesian art label based in Seminyak. So who is Keenhouse you may ask? We asked some questions to find out. Keenhouse: I’m originally from Germany, half Indonesian. I moved to Jakarta about a year ago after 15 years in LA. I’m a composer and music producer covering genres from electronic music to Jazz doing band productions, film and TV music. I’ve gone by the alias Keenhouse since 2008 being active as part of the West Coast chill wave /synth wave movement with artists such as College, Anoraak, Neon Indian, Fabian, and the French Valerie Collective. As a performer I mostly perform live electronic music using machines and hardware. The live performances are sometimes solo but often feature other

musicians including percussionists, singers, and guitars. Later this month (Oct 21) I will be performing live at Mondo by the Rooftop in Jakarta featuring other musicians and a projection mapping show. When I’m not playing live I love to DJ playing mostly Detroid house, techno and disco. I also represent a company called Elektron Music Machines in Jakarta and will be giving workshops showcasing Elektron’s synth and drum machines. The first workshops will be in Jakarta and hopefully in Denpasar as well in the near future!

I see you have released three albums so far. Tell me about them and how have they progressed?

Keenhouse: This is the first time I lived here and it’s great. Lots of really great musicians and art happening here. I really admire that.

Keenhouse: Yes there are three albums (2008, 2012, 2015). The first album was probably the poppiest with most of the songs featured in US TV shows. The second album was more of a concept album. The tracks were written in the US, Europe, and Bali. The style ranges from jazzier cuts to new age to techno. The album was originally released as a heavy weight double vinyl edition. The album was originally meant as a music diary hence the name Four Dreams. The third album was mainly done in LA. It’s very 70s oriented overall and features lots of orchestral scoring in the style of 70s jazz combos. The album’s sound is kind of more retro futuristic and less 80s synth wave oriented. We used a lot of old synths and analog hardware for that one. It was a bit of a geek journey for the engineer and me. That album also exists as a Hi Res audio edition.

What’s next for Keenhouse and Ken Rangkuty?

How do you find being back in Jakarta and Indonesia after your time in LA?

Keenhouse: I just finished building my production studio in Jakarta and will start working on the next album in the near future. I’m hoping to feature some local talent with that one. e walked passed Hoi Polloi in the Double Six area of Seminyak and decided to stop by for some nice refreshing drinks as the space looked very inviting and super cozy. Hoi Polloi is a kind of beer paradise. Imported craft beers from around the world are beautifully displayed right behind the bar in not only one but six taps. We asked the staff for a recommendation on a great drink and besides all the variety of tasty crafted beers, she recommended their newest cocktail called The Jealous Lover Rp 100K. The mixture of Citadelle gin, Campari, lemon juice, housemade bitters and eggwhite foam made this cocktail kinda dry, bitter, but also sweet - just as described in the menu. We loved it. Aside from the great selection of cocktails, wine and of course, craft beer listed on the

menu - Hoi Polloi also has a great list of delicious looking meals to choose from, we were intrigued and decided to stay for lunch, and we were glad we did. We ordered Marinated Olives Rp 30K, which came in quite a generous portion and tasted absolutely amazing! Cerignola, lecinno, kalamata & gaeta olives beautifully marinated with fennel, chilli, orange peel & herb oil. Came next was the Yaki gyoza Rp 55k, which I was totally blown away by - this Japanese pan fried pork & ginger dumplings with soy and rice wine dipping sauce were golden brown and crispy on the outside, plus juicy on the inside, and of course was real tasty! Just as perfect as a Gyoza can be. We both went crazy for them! Sticky ribs IDR 70K and Garry’s pizza Rp 110K was served next. The mouthwatering Baby back ribs were insanely delicious, juicy and tender, brushed with a gorgeous blend of honey, hoisin and sriracha glaze. The pizza with bacon, pork belly, cherry tomato, spinach, egg toppings was beautiful too, especially topped with some extra chopped chili Rp 10K, yum!! Other extra toppings for your pizza such as mushrooms, mozzarella, meatballs and more are available for an additional cost. If you come between 5-7pm, you can get

FOOD Starfish Bloo’s concept revolves around PanAsian cuisine, basically merging the East, West and everything in between, but when it was time for dessert, we almost fell off our chairs. Out came a trolley with what looked like a mad scientist behind the wheel…that’s when the magic happened. He created The Dark Chocolate Mousse, Rasberry Liquid Nitrogen (125k) by dipping the chocolate bomb into dry ice and moulding it into what looked like some sort of sea creature, then adding the surrounding condiments. MATTIEL Mattiel

Mattiel Brown is something of a newbie in the pop world, but based on her barnstorming self-titled new LP she certainly knows her way around a guitar. Raised in rural Georgia on a diet of The Monkees and old Donovan records, the sometime designer and musician Brown then moved to creative hotbed Atlanta where she hooked up with backing players Randy Michael and Jonah Swilley. Together, the trio worked on a clutch of tracks that eventually grew into Mattiel’s fully formed debut, out late last year on the hip Heavenly label. Built around a backbone of tight-as-a-drum riffery and pared down production, each track is a wonderfully simple earworm that grabs and sucks you in immediately. The effect

recalls early PJ Harvey, The Black Keys, First Aid Kit and especially The White Stripes. Fast, funky, bluesy, the album rattles by in a super economical 35 minutes with nary a dull moment. The opening stomp of “Whites of Their Eyes” and raw-funk of “Five and Tens” is where she seems most at home, but the jazzy “Not Today” and “Baby Brother” also impress with their assured confidence and Brown’s bansheelike vocals. Kuncir Sathya Viku Kuncir Sathya Viku lives in the traditional surroundings of Tabanan, Bali. His hometown is what inspires him to paint the ancient culture of Bali. Although many are considered taboo, Kuncir is able to make his artwork known by presenting them in a more modern way. Having graduated from an art institute in Bali, he told a long story about the influence of the Balinese Rerajahan culture and how it was applied to the works he has made. How did you get into painting? My story is probably similar to other artists. I got into the art world at the same time as I got into the art institution. I wasn’t able to get into the college of my parents’ choice and I saw an enrollment opening in one of art institutions in Denpasar, so I that became my choice. Painting is a little bit of a shift from me since in college I chose Visual Communication Design as my major. However, I have liked to paint ever since high school and despite my major in college, I was also taught to paint traditionally. What do you paint? I paint traditional objects fused with a modern style. I live in a very traditional place, surrounded by traditional things like gamelan and traditional dance. However, I’m not really keen on traditional subjects since I have enough of them at home. So, I draw modern art instead, including a variation of modern cartoons. Nevertheless, I realize that somehow it wasn’t right, that I must not

deny my roots of tradition. So, I had an idea to combine them all. What techniques do you use in your painting? Honestly, I can not really tell the exact techniques I used for my painting. However, I can say that I always play with the mix of colors using acrylics paint. I use that to paint on plywood, canvas and even t-shirts. I always try to imply simplicity in my painting because I love being simple. What do you want to convey through your painting? Most of my painting tell my perspective on how I see our life. How I see the social condition and the things that bother me about it. I am not the kind of person who can speak loudly and march on the street to protest so I protest through my painting. If you see my paintings, you can find comedy, a few vulgar images and strong traditional touches as well. I really appreciate the artist who can bring their tradition to their artwork.

The Spa at The ONE Legian A Peaceful Sanctuary on the Side of Busy Legian Street

LOOK Nestled in a small space inside the nook of The ONE Legian Hotel, The Spa, is indeed designed for leisure travelers seeking some serious pampering experience with its extensive treatment choices. Entering The Spa room, we are greeted with a friendly smile of the staff and a dimmed orange glow from the light that helps bring peace to our pampering journey. The Spa makes smart use of its not so large space with its well-organized display of products in their front room as well as three compact treatment chambers inside. While we select the treatment options, a glass of ginger tea was offered to warm up our body. FEEL The Spa provides each treatment with traditional Balinese techniques mixed with some modern touches including one of their signature treatments that we tried called “Inside Out” (300K nett). This treatment covers a head-to-toe beauty and relaxation needs with its combination of a 60 minute traditional massage, 30 minute body scrub, and a 30 minute facial. Not to forget the addition of free light bites of our choice that are provided right after the treatment. Done with our consultation sheet, we step into the treatment room and layed down upward in the most comfortable position on the bed. Our therapist then started to apply very smooth yet gentle movement continued with some sliding technique with a Jasmine essential oil. The series of movements gave a relief for stress, anxiety and muscle pain. Done with the legs, back and arm massage, the therapist then shifted the treatment into a body scrubbing session. Using high quality ingredients, the scrub gives thorough care for our skin by making it moist and glow. Last but

not least is a facial treatment which is done after we shower and clean the scrub residue. Cleanser, toner, oil, face masks, and other face skincare were delivered step by step to our face to make our skin clearer and brighter. Finish with all the series of treatments, with our brand new body and face, we were then led by the staff to The DECK restaurant for the light bite that we chose. A sandwich and french fries were more than enough to complete this joyful journey. INGREDIENTS For the Inside Out treatment, there are three choices of essential oil and scrub. For the essential oil we can choose among “The Spa Oil” made of peppermint, “Inspiration Oil” made of ylang ylang, lavender, and bergamot and “Jasmine Oil” made of Jasmine extract. As for the scrub, they provide Coconut scrub which is good for dry skin, Lulur for normal skin, and Green Tea scrub for oily skin. Last, for facial treatments they use a variant of products which contain Aloe Vera and Seaweed. All products are made with natural and carefully sorted ingredients to give an actual healing result. MAGIC The magic would have to be the head to toe coverage, as well as the various ingredients including essential oils, sea salt scrub and milk bath that are used in the treatments. My Bikini Girls Go Surfing Day

Friday 21st September was pretty special for all of us girls who took part in the My Bikini Girls Go Surfing day event by Rip Curl at Padang Padang beach, not only did we get to surf in perfect wave conditions on a fine sunny day - we also got to paddle out alongside some of the world’s best surfers such as Nikki Van Dijk, Bethany Hamilton, Alana Blanchard and the entire Rip Curl Junior women’s team: Diah Rahayu (Bali), Kirra-Belle Olsson (Aus), Kobie Enright (Aus), Molly Picklum (Aus), Leah Thompson (USA), Alyssa Spencer (USA), Brisa Hennessy (Haw), Leilani McGonagle (Costa Rica) and Ella Williams (NZ). The event included a meet and greet, including photo signings, open to the public on Thursday 4pm at the newly opened Rip Curl Shop Padang Padang where hundreds came to see their surf Idols. More than 60 girls from all different surf levels joined the epic Girls Go Surfing Day’s main event on Friday where girls were divided in three groups to take turns paddling out and have

the Pros not only guided them through the basics of surfing but also push them onto the waves. Surf booties, helmets and surfboards as well as refreshments were provided for all participants at the event that started at 8am. While surfing is usually preferred with less to no crowds, this session with a big crowd of girls was magical to say the least, especially the final session where 15 of us selected to go

for a final paddle with the whole Rip Curl team - having Nikki cheering for you while you ride a wave and party waving with the surf icon Bethany Hamilton and Alana Blanchard was a next level stoked moment for all of us. Some of the young girls even got to tandem surf with their idols, while others as young as six years old were impressively ripping with lots of smiles. Once in awhile one of us shouted â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the best surf ever!â&#x20AC;? Tandem surfing has never been so fun! Surfing with the Rip Curl team represented more than just Girls Go Surfing, it was a celebration of surfing with the rad bunch of girls who are passionate about the sport and have a big love for the ocean. Most importantly, the event inspired us to surf better and have fun doing it and the young ones who want to go Pro one day will hopefully be inspired to go for their dreams.
