SCOOP Bali Kissing Festival “Omed-Omedan” On March 8th, thousands of locals in the tiny Balinese village of Banjar Kaja Sesetan, Denpasar gather for the mass kissing ritual festival. A strangely liberal concept for a relatively traditional and conservative society, omed-omedan is a ceremony when boys stay on one side of the road, and girls on the other. The boys then run to the girls, pull them and kiss, while other people in the crowd pour water on them. It is also a form of celebration on the first day after the Saka new year which is known as The Day of Silence. The ceremony usually starts around 2pm. Along with the festival, there will also be a street bazaar with lots of traditional food and crafts. Visitors are welcome to watch this festival.

Bali Spirit Festival 2019 The world renown Bali Spirit Festival will be taking place for its 12th year, spiritually charged week-long celebration on March 24 – 31! If you haven’t heard of the festival yet, their main mission is to awaken and nourish each individual’s potential for positive change within, creating positive change in our homes, communities and around the world. The festivals entertainment includes yoga, dance, healing workshops, seminars, meditation, music, kids’ activities, the Coco Love stage & market and much more! If you would like to be a part of the festival as a volunteer, a guest, a sponsor or in any way head to their website www.balispiritfestival.com and you will find an abundance of information including the full line-up, tickets and detailed descriptions on every aspect of the festival!

Denpasar 231st Anniversary

On February 27th, Denpasar will be more colourful as the island’s capital celebrates its 231st anniversary. The celebration will take place around Puputan Square, and a number of competitions as well as cultural performances and parades will also be held on the day. The name itself has existed since 1788 marked by the establishment of Puri Denpasar, a castle located in Badung. Puri Denpasar was the center of the Badung kingdom under the rule of Raja I Gusti Made Ngurah. This piece of history underlies the commemoration of the 231rd Anniversary of Denpasar City this year. In addition to the festivities, the government will showcase more of Denpasar’s history.

SCOOP Nyepi in Bali If you are in Bali on March 6th until 8th, you’ll have the chance to experience the Day of Silence! There are no flights scheduled on March 7, no one can leave or enter Bali, everything is closed and no light is meant to be lit. While no one is allowed to drive or walk around, and everyone is meant to stay indoors, you can try some of these hotel’s Nyepi package. Go for the Nyepi package at the Grand Istana Rama, Kuta if you want to stay while you can feel the beach atmosphere around. The One Legian also offers a tempting affordable package for Nyepi with some in-house activites. Heading south, Karma Kandara and Raddison Blu Uluwatu are also offering great packages for the two night period. It’s an excellent time to enjoy some time in meditation and self-reflection and make sure you get to see the ogoh-ogoh parade the night before. Enjoy

New Theme Park to Blow Your Mind California’s Legacy Entertainment are bringing the world’s first “Stunt Show Dark Ride” dubbed “Road Rage” to the upcoming Trans Studio Bali theme park opening later this year. Currently in construction, Road Rage is expected to break new ground with its integration of live performers and high-octane stunts. “For the first time ever, visitors to an Indonesian theme park will experience a dark ride that exceeds those in many of the world’s top international theme parks” said Lee Roe, Legacy’s creative director for the project. Trans Studio are the pioneers and leading theme park operator in Indonesia, they have no interest in rehashing what’s been done elsewhere, so we can expect to see something truly mind bending! Exciting news!

Are You Going to Empower Women this March? Celebrate International Women’s Day with Bali WISE at their “Hats Off to Women” event held at the W Bali Seminyak’s Ball Room on March 29. Mark Knight

FEATURE

Mark Knight is no stranger to Bali and its party sounds, having played here a number of times already. We are excited to see the house and techno master back and this time at W’s hallowed basement, Woobase, on Thursday, Feb 28. So what’s Mark Knight all about? He’s most famous for his dance music label Toolroom Records that he started in 2003 with his brother in the garage/toolroom of his parent’s house in Maidstone, UK. Since then, the Toolroom imprint has seen great success, being one of the biggest selling labels on Beatport, and helping to push the dance music world into the next stratosphere. Toolroom Trax is another off-shoot label which focuses on pursuing new electronic talent. As a producer, Mark has dropped some genre defining tracks over the years, “Man With The Red Face,” “Downpipe,” “Good Times,” “Devil Walking,” he has consistently topped international dance charts, and has been involved in producing tracks for leading artists, including live musicians, receiving a Grammy Award with a Black Eye Peas track, no less, and collaborated with music producers from all styles of dance music. Mark Knight now holds residencies and Toolroom shows in most of the major clubbing centres of the world, but next week he is going to be right here in Bali again spinning his latest wares. He knows how to get the party started and let it go all night long. The Beat had the chance for a quick catch up and quick one-on-one with the house meister again this past week. Where are you from? I grew up in Maidstone, but I now live in Chislehurst, near London. How would you describe your DJ/performance/ music style? Upfront, energetic and fun. What is the first album you ever owned? “Off The Wall” by Michael Jackson

Three things you look for when you see a new DJ play? How they tell a story with their set, their own energy, how they read a crowd. If you’re not flying around the world playing gigs what are your favorite things to do? Being with my family: we are football crazy in our house. On the two weekends every month I don’t DJ, it’s a nonstop football – training, matches and watching football… I love it! If we’re going to buy you a drink, what should it be? A nice cold pint of Peroni (Italian beer). A song you have stuck in your head these days: Roses Gabor – Stuff Your favorite city for music? London has always been the center of the universe for music. I am so lucky to live here. Best gig ever? Probably playing 14 hours at Space in Miami. Best collaboration ever? Working with Underworld on their album Barking. Your proudest moment? The birth of my son Rupert. An insider tip on what dj’s or artists are about to break? Wheats and Siege for me are the two best up and coming producers in the world right now, both are on fire at the moment. Watch this space… How many times have you been to Bali and what can we expect at the show this time around? To be honest I can’t remember exactly, but it’s been a few over the years and it’s always somewhere I look forward to playing. In terms of what to expect, I get asked this a lot and I always say the same thing… you’ll have to come down and see for yourself!

THE BEAT CANGGU

Finns Beach Club

Canggu FOOD GUIDE So it’s your first time in the bustling Canggu area and you want to know where to go and what to do. First, Canggu is divided into two areas, Berawa in the south and Batubulong/Echo Beach areas in the north. Here is the BEAT guide to the best eating from breakfast to dinner, to the vibing sunset locations. Breakfast Let’s start off with the most important meal of the day, breakfast. If you’re staying near Batu Bolong, which is the most popular and busiest strip in Canggu, there are a lot of options. Crate Café is popular for its bang-for-buck, Instagram worthy breakfast and lunch meals. Nearby cafes The Loft, Vida and newly-opened The Common also provide delicious breakfast dishes and great coffee. Moving south across the shortcut road to the Berawa area. Breakfast at Hungry Bird is

44

www.thebeatbali.com

probably the most affordable, popular with the local surfers and travellers for their cheap food and tasty home-roasted coffee. Moving down the road towards the intersection of Pantai Berawa is Musubi, a Japanese fusion restaurant that’s a bit pricier, but it’s still great value for money and perfect for an interesting brunch. At the next intersection, near the Finns Rec Club end, you’ll find Peloton, a plant-based restaurant that even has the carnivores among us coming back for more, seriously inventive and tasty treats morning to night.

THE BEAT CANGGU Lunch When it comes to lunch in Canggu you can’t go wrong with the staples; Shady Shack, Mai Tai, Laca Lita, Koi and The Slow. The list goes on and on. Whether you’re looking for a rice field terrace view or a secluded place for an intimate lunch, Canggu boasts so many different concepts and styles of food. If you’re in the mood for Italian; La Baracca, Bottega Italiana or Pizza Fabbrica are all great choices in the area. You wouldn’t want to miss the real MVP or champion though. While enjoying all the international variety of foods in Canggu, you have to try the local foods too. Some great Indonesian warungs are Bu Mi, Varuna, Jaba, Oma Jamu and Heboh to name just a few. Heading back to Berawa is easy, just drive over the “Canggu shortcut” (preferably on your bike and watch the edge) and you’ll stumble across the likes of Milu by Nook, Nude, Milk & Madu and Finns Recreation Club. Finns serves a mean smoked BBQ selection as well as vegan delicacies.

you’re looking for something a little fancier, with great cocktails and grand locale, next door’s Finns VIP Beach Club (which presently is being renovated) has an elevated 180° sunset rooftop that will blow your mind. Other cool spots for sunset are The Lawn, Tukan, Ji, La Brisa or Como Beach Club part of the Como Uma Canggu hotel. Dinner Dinner in Canggu can go a few different ways, you can spend a bomb or go on the cheap. If you’re feeling like some impressive localinspired feasting try Fish Bone Local, Ulekan or Moana. All of which have a great setting for a

The Lawn

Crate Cafe

Sunset Spots Don’t miss the sunset before heading out to dinner. Some popular spots are the Naked Coconut beach strip in Berawa, where all the locally owned shacks or beach warungs serve ice cold beers and coconuts, and mix it with the Berawa big daddy, Finns Beach Club. If

date and drinks as well. Not to mention, Mason, serving modern Australian cuisine from their marble open kitchen. The Tugu’s restaurant Ji is well known for its top-quality Japanese cuisine and historic design. If you’re in Berawa for dinner don’t overlook TYGR or One Eyed Jack for some more Japanese grub. TYGR being the least expensive of the three. Pantai Berawa has plenty of restaurants with dinner options, but the stand-outs are Green Ginger, serving humble but delicious Asian styled vegetarian food, Macan, the French restaurant with an Asian touch and Indigo, a pricy, but good value for money restaurant dishing up a fusion of French/ Japanese cuisine. www.thebeatbali.com

If you are a coffee maniac, like us, then Cups is the new Berawa hot spot for you. Specialty coffee meets specialty loose leaf teas and a sweet menu of brekkie favorites – Smashed Avo is beautified by strawberries and fluffy scramble egg spiced up by sprinkled chili. Cup’s team has also thrown in a few Indonesian classics with a twist – try their Nasi Goreng + innovatively made Cap Cay. They also make their own homemade pastries and if you’re about to get hitched – they’ll conjure up a Willy Wonka-like wedding cake for you too!

What we have to highlight is their Chai Latte – creamiest we’ve had in a long time, maybe ever! Perfect for the afternoons, when you still have coffee cravings, but have to stay away from caffeine, because insomnia is real. The café opens onto the semi-quiet Tegal Sari Street and has a swanky outdoor seating area. The interior is bright with glass floor to ceiling sliding door, walls are decorated in funky murals and you just have to go check out how creatively they handled the brick partition between the coffee bar and the resto, we will race you to it! ith new restaurants popping up all over the island - Ryoshi remains one of the few restaurants that have maintained its quality of the food and service for a long time, so coming back here for a great sushi fix is more like a tradition as my partner and I love Ryoshi and its consistent offerings. Usually prefering their outdoor garden dining area, we opted for their cozy indoor to avoid the moody rain drops this time of year. We ordered ourselves the Sashimi salad Rp 65K and Tuna Panko Rp 42K for appetizers, Beef Teppan Rp 105K and Chirashi Sushi Rp 85K and each a Strawberry Chuhai Rp 35K. Our Sashimi salad was the first to be served, this seaweed salad topped with an assortment of sashimi was not only tasty and appetizing - it was also fresh and beautifully presented. Our Tuna panko was also delicious, breaded tuna roll deep fried into perfection, yum! Next arrived, our mouth watering Beef Teppan and bowl of Chirashi Sushi, both also well presented on our table. The 200g imported beef steak was as tender and juicy as can be, sizzled tepanyaki style we both especially loved the generous garlic toppings

FOOD it came with that compliment its tastiness. Chirashi Sushi was another amazing dish, a bowl of various beautifully sliced raw fish over a bowl of rice is simply delicious. We ended our delightful lunch with a Matcha Shiratama Rp 35K, our all time favorite dessert at Ryoshi, which is a green tea ice cream topped with green tea jelly, mochi balls and soya malt. This particular dessert has an amazing sweetness that got us hooked the first time we tried it, I especially love and it has since became one of our favorites. If you love live music like we do then Ryoshi is not to be missed, don’t miss Rio Sidik quintet putting a great show on every Monday starting 9pm and Funky Friday night featuring some of the best local jazz musicians. Delicious Japanese food, prompt service, spacious seating area, great live music and overall value for money - Ryoshi ticks all the boxes for an amazing Japenese dining experience in Bali.

was the star of the show in our opinion, three melt-in-your-mouth Tuna bites that ignited the hunger inside us. Next was the Pargmigiano Ravioli - another three tasty spoonful’s, this time into ravioli dreamland. The courses that followed were the Merruzo Cod Fish, Rib Eye Wagyu Beef, and Risotto Beef Cheek which were sufficiently good and worth the cover charge. After finishing our bottle of Prosecco and new-age Tiramisu we kissed goodbye until next week’s Date for Two.

In attendance were some of the more notable fashionistas from around town and I asked her, how did the show go down with them? “It was amazing, I sold 16 sets and everyone was so happy with my product. I couldn’t believe the enthusiasm, it was beyond what I expected. One lady thought that my brand was from France because of the style and the quality,” she enthused.

Female surfing has come a long way to earn its place in the world today. In addition to the recent WSL’s equal pay for both male and female athletes that many of us celebrated, we know for sure that the time has come for women’s surfing to grow even bigger.

Bali was immediately calling as her sister invited her to come and live with her on the Island of the Gods and little did she know that her inner jungle girl was about to conquer and experience something totally new and thrilling. As soon as she landed her feet on the island, she fell in love with it right away. She learnt to surf on her own in 2012. Almost

giving up when it didn’t seem like she could ever master it, after learning for a while and fed up with failing to catch a proper wave, until one day she finally caught one... “ That was the moment and feeling of victory,’’ said Sofie. And from then on, there was no going back - surfing became her life. Sofie is striving to inspire, achieve great success and spread positive vibes through Salty Sirens Surf, while building a strong community of female surfing in Bali. To her, surfing is about having fun, enjoying the ride and to keep on pushing boundaries to take surfing to the next level. MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS The Beat astrologer Manish Kumar Arora reads into the next two weeks. Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

You could focus on a new dream that you have for your future, and be more hopeful about your future than your present. A new idea could come to you, something you’d never normally come up with but now think would work out well. You have an easier time dealing with your friends, and get along with them better than usual. You feel at ease with them and in groups, and may work better in a group. You may be a little dramatic at times, and you feel your best when you’re expressing yourself and being heard. Favorable Dates: 21, 28, 5 Favorable Colors : White & Blue

You can work on projects and get them done easily, as long as you’re not lazy with them. You’re all about the big picture and can’t be bothered with the small stuff during this time. If you’re a writer or work in communications or technology, this can be a good time for you. You’re more hard-working, disciplined, and willing to sacrifice whatever you need to in order to achieve. You may seem more cold and distant because of that. You will take a more analytical and distant approach to love. Favorable Dates: 24, 1, 3 Favorable Colors Yellow & Blue

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

You could see the culmination of something you’ve been working on for a long time and finally be rewarded. Engaging in your hobbies is good and you may feel more inspired, creative, and artistic, as well as flirty and romantic. You could meet many potential suitors, if single. If you’ve been working hard for something with your career, you could finally get there. Conversely, if you’ve been doing things wrong, you could have setbacks, delays, or other problems. You could also find yourself in the public eye for some reason. Favorable Dates: 23, 2, 5 Favorable Colors : Yellow & Red

You may find that you question your goals and reconsider your life path, wanting to change directions and do something else entirely. You may have arguments or misunderstandings with your boss, parent, or mentor. You may question the dreams that you have, wondering if you’re dreaming of the right things, or if they’re just too far for you to reach and unrealistic. You could encounter opposition to your dreams that halts you. Your friends may need too much from you or cause problems. If anyone questions your beliefs, you’re more prone to fight them too hard, acting too defensive. Favorable Dates: 25, 2, 4 Favorable Colors : White & Red

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June )

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

You have an easier time getting your hands on the money you need, but will also have an easier time spending it on splurges. Your self-esteem may be higher, and you’re more confident and secure. You could acquire something of value. You could do something to make your home more beautiful. Dealing with your family can be easier for you, as well as getting in touch with your emotions. This is a good time for reviewing your work, doing projects over again, editing and taking a second look. A health issue could return that you thought was over with. Favorable Dates: 24, 5, 6 Favorable Colors : Purple & Green

You could begin a new work project, get a new job or be offered a new job, or move to a new work environment. You may start a new healthy habit or get a new pet. You’re more comfortable when you’re with someone else and you want to focus more on them than yourself. A loved one could be in the spotlight or be recognized for something he has done. You also want love in your life, and if you’re single, you may date more, or at least want to. If attached, you may try to bring more romance into the relationship, though you could also fight more with your loved ones. Favorable Dates: 23, 28, 2 Favorable Colors : Blue & Red

Your moods may swing from one extreme to the other and you get stuck in foul moods. You need to let go of something and it’s emotional, but necessary. You could have a karmic experience. Favorable Dates: 23, 27, 4 Favorable Colors: Green & Grey

You may feel less competitive and want to do things on your own, feeling like you have better energy by yourself, and that other people drain you. You seem more shy, quiet even and keep things to yourself in this period. You’re not up for sharing and you spend a lot of time in your own little world, away from everyone else. You become much more driven and focused on your dreams for your future. You spend time thinking more about your future and exactly what you want out of it, and how you can get it. Favorable Colors: White & Purple

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

You may find that career dealings go smoother than usual. If you have any creative projects to work on, you do them well. You can outline how you want to progress with your work to be efficient and productive. If you have to deal with your boss or a parent, you can win them over. You also come across well publicly. You have an easier time negotiating, mediating and playing fair. You could form a partnership with someone that’s mutually beneficial. If attached, you’ll be more romantic with your partner; if single, you’ll want to have someone even more. Favorable Dates: 25, 28, 3 Favorable Colors: Red & Blue

Your mind is a little quicker, and you seem more intellectually detached. You try to say the right thing and are more concerned with not offending anyone. You’re not as imaginative as usual and feel best when you’re being realistic, getting tasks done and tackling your to-do list. You may feel unease in your committed relationships, not wanting to do as much for them, or feeling like you need to walk away from someone. The responsibilities that you have in your relationships stifle you now. Favorable Dates: 23, 27, 1 Favorable Colors: Blue & Yellow

In this exhibition, there will be no digitally made painting, no usual pop art works of Dipo as he thought he had to give up the “fake” world his works exposed. Fake because of their referential icons, fake because of the digital print technique he used. And what is the exact opposite to fully digital controlled images? Abstraction. In this exhibition, you will see him let himself go in form and color, toward the unknown. Jl. Kayu Aya, Seminyak, Kuta

ART

Trisno Adi Wirawan Trisno Adi Wirawan started his art journey with expressionism, but an excessive jolt within has catapulted him into the world of abstract. He believes that abstract is the yoga of art, when the honest thoughts are explored within and channeled through his hand. His works are now displayed at C5 Visual Art Exhibition at Griya Art Gallery until February 28th.

How did you begin your journey as an artist? I started studying arts formally at the High School of Arts in Batubulan, followed by a bachelor degree at Ganesha University in Singaraja where I majored in art. Following the curriculum, I learned several forms of art. I then decided to focus on painting for my final project, and I started with expressionism. As time went by, I found myself unsatisfied with this style. I continued to channel this excessive energy onto my canvases and I found these abstract elements. Since then, I knew that I had found my comfort zone in abstract. So abstract has become your true identity? It’s not exactly like that. Until now, I still have anxiety in my art life. I feel like I have to keep creating and creating. In fact, each artist must

have their own anxiety. If there is no anxiety, how would we pour the idea into our medium? Either it be painting, graphics or sculpture. What is the concept for your artwork? My concept cannot be separated from my own problems; it’s about what I meet in my life journey as an individual and as an artist, as well as a Balinese who also cannot be separated from the cultural values of Bali. However, I don’t explicitly and openly present the Balinese symbols in my works. What I’m showing is the spirit of Bali itself. Meanwhile, my art is now more into minimalist abstract as I frequently use basic colors like red, white and black.

Away Spa At W Bali - Seminyak Pause And Unwind At The Away Spa

For a total energizing effect, this herbal massage oil has also been infused with fresh ingredients such as basil and mint leaves. LOOK Nestled inside Seminyak’s trendy W Retreat, Away Spa has an extravagant spread of indoor treatment areas for total privacy and complete renewal. An extraordinary vibe welcomed us as we stepped into their gorgeous Spa area, with incredible local architectural details and designs. The spa comprises of three single treatment rooms with meditation platforms, two double treatment rooms with vitality baths, two spa suites with wet and dry treatment areas, a facial room, a hair salon and a mani-pedi lounge.

MAGIC Aside from the luxurious spa experience, Away Spa completes their offer by adding some extraordinary facilities to their package, including the ones they set in their changing rooms such as hot stone baths and hydro jet cold plunges which can be enjoyed before or after. There is also a chill bar and refuel area where guests can sit back and relax with a selection of refreshing beverages, made to complete the whole experience. Furthermore, Away Spa is also open 24 hours, meaning that you can get treated and spoiled anytime you wish!

FEEL Away Spa menu provides a range of treatments to cleanse and detox your body with their luxury spa experience on a meditation platform. We chose the Away Spa’s signature “Morning After” (1,300k) for 90 minutes; a treatment that is designed for guests who wish to detox from a long, playful night out. However, it is also perfect for those who want a comprehensive massage. The treatment began with the ritual foot bath. While we got our feet cleansed, our therapist asked if we needed the prelude session. Done prior to the main treatment, the prelude session aims to promote agility in movement, increases flexibility and stimulates blood circulation through proper stretching. Thus, it gets our body prepared for the main treatment. The therapeutic massage then starts. It was so deep, combining lots of stretching with fingers, hands and forearm pressure points. It worked deeply to relieve the muscular aches and pains, with the help of aromatic herbal oil that soothed our minds. We ended our experience after 90 mins with another glass of detox drink.
