SURFING
MENTAWAI
Just like many off-the-beaten-track corners of Indonesia, The Mentawai Islands – some 150km off the coast of Sumatra – were first put on the map by a bunch of intrepid surfers over 30 years ago, looking to find perfect waves away from the busier islands. Ask any surfer which breaks are on their bucket list, and you can bet that most of them will be found somewhere out here. “The Ments” are home to an all-star cast of left and right reef breaks, most of which are tailored perfectly for the intermediate to advanced level surfer. Waves such as Lance’s Right, Telescopes and Macaronis are lodged firmly in surfing folklore as the kind of places where dream sessions go down almost every day, but for every named spot there are still plenty more just waiting to be chanced upon. For surfing visitors to the islands, there are essentially two choices if you’re looking to score the waves of your life. Inter-island travel is close to non-existent, so the first option is to stay on land at one of the land camps that are mushrooming all over the archipelago (www.togatnusaretreat. com has its own private island!). Meanwhile, the second option is to jump on a charter boat, for an all-inclusive full board two-week trip. Check out The Orca Laut (www. orcalautsurf.com) and Raja Elang (www. tonyeltheringtonsurfcharters.com) for basic comfort with a dash of adventure on the high seas. One thing that remains the same either way is the surf, and for a country that is as wave-riddled as Indonesia, The Mentawai islands stand out as the jewel in the crown. INSIDE
THE VAULT A new club called Vault opened two weeks ago at the back and below the Tamora retail complex on the main road in Berawa. It was a large, well-attended opening that kicked off a new phase in the life of Canggu, namely nightlife. The (literally) underground club is only open Friday and Saturday at the moment and is playing house music on Fridays and a hip hop mix on Saturdays and according to one of the three owners, Harmen, the venue can fit up to 1200 people. Now, that’s no small club! There’s a cocktail bar next door, too, also underground, called the Cocktail Bunker which is open seven nights a week. We asked Harmen a few more questions while we had him on the line and the first was what the Vault concept was all about? “Vault was created purely to form

FEATURE a place/haven for a true music experience. We wanted an underground raw feel that focused on the music. Something the island has been missing we felt. A place that can go until whatever hours and not bother or stir up the neighbourhood nor community.” So how about Berawa and Canggu, is it ready for an underground club? “We believe so, yes. The area has grown so much in recent years and the nightlife is booming.” Who designed Vault? “Well our architect and designers, Kiko and Nico from El Colectivo Studio are from Barcelona and Chile, but the other partners and I played a big roll too. We have been planning this since mid-2017.”
Vault is now open. Be sure to experience the pumping sounds and underground style of this new player in Berawa. Cocktail Bunker 7 days a week from 9pm Vault Club Friday & Saturday from 10pm
We asked music director, Ben Pound, if they are going to have many international DJs or keeping it local? “Bit of a mix but supporting the local underground scene.”

ew addition to the ultra-hip (ster) Batu Bolong strip, this little café packs a big punch. First, coffee. They crafted their very own top-notch house blend. The result is perfection in every single sip. For the specialty coffee snobs: their medium roast tastes like bittersweet chocolate with lingering caramel notes. Go test your taste buds. We were hooked. If you seek a consistently great cup, this is your go to. At The Common, the motto is: “we like it clean, green and healthy” - staying true to that, they dish up organic, colorful plates with a big focus on taste. Must try are super fresh, mostly plant-based nourishing salad bowls and “Commoners” brekkie combo steal: get any breakfast, coffee and a small juice for only 100k!
The cafe’s menu is uncomplicated as all good food should be. Plus it gets served in a laid-back tropical atmosphere and bright interior décor. Sit down on a comfy cushioned bench to savor the fresh brunch and it will feel glorious. Order any “Common” salad and it will both taste and look really good. Our taste buds also instantly fell for the crunchy breakfast granola, rich gluten-free chocolate cake and super flavorsome fish tacos – all of these plates of health should make you feel better about your other lifestyle choices. Also, this place is Australian – so that is a yes on some very solid Avo toast. by Vero

Sushi Bar at Finns
F
inns Beach Club has been quite a phenomenon since opening on Berawa beach almost three years ago. (They will celebrating their third anniversary soon). Pumping with approximately 4000 people passing through the doors to enjoy the sun and good times every day, it just keeps on getting better and busier. Besides the usual beachside fare, which you would expect at any beach club worth its salt, recently Finns lifted their dining game a notch or two with the advent of Japanese cuisine in the Sushi Bar. The Sushi Bar is sited at the back end of the restaurant area with a rustic, wooden Japanese design and features the freshest of sushi, sashimi, maki rolls, and uzusukuri, which is a Carpaccio style white fish sliced impossibly thin paired with a truffle ponzu sauce. Edamame, gyoza and yakitori are also available. I couldn’t wait to give the menu a spin. I sat down with my lovely companion. We’d been splashing around in the pool and enjoying some sun on a balmy (not so) wet season afternoon and now it was time for a feed. The sun was sinking to the west and fortunately the Sushi Bar is a little more protected from the sun’s rays than just about anywhere else in the club, which can be handy after a long time frolicking in the pool. The Japanese can also

be ordered and eaten anywhere in the beach club. I ordered an ice cold Bintang as the server placed the Japanese menu on the table. The menu is not enormous, but features all the best choices for a simple selection process to get you straight into the action. The Indonesian, Japanese chefs are behind the wooden bar, bamboo and alang alang above, slicing up the raw fish as my friend and I perused the menu. We opted for some simple choices. Japanese food is by far the Rolls Royce of healthy cuisines and here at Finns it’s at its simplest and best. We chose the

Gyoza (75k) – six pieces of soft chicken dumpling with a spicy ponzu sauce, and the Chirashazushi bowl (135k) – a bowl of seasoned sushi rice, sliced fresh salmon, butterfish, snapper, tuna, prawn, tobiko, tamagoyaki, avocado, wakame and nori served with pickled ginger, wasabi and sesame seeds. This bowl was such a winner and a meal in itself. The freshly ‘ground at the table’ wasabi is also a treat.
The chefs are well trained from some of the best hotels on the island and they are making as good and fresh Japanese as you would find anywhere. Make sure to try it next time you are lazing your day away at Finns Beach Club. [Words. David Trauts. Images. Adam Rasyid]
To complete the meal, we also chose a couple of maki rolls, one being the Sunset Roll (135k) – tempura prawn, cucumber and topped with spicy tuna, sesame, shoyu and tempura flakes, and then the Crispy Salmon Skin Roll (115k) – crispy salmon skin, cucumber, tobiko and teriyaki mayo. Both were crunchy, tasty and fresh as a daisy. We washed all this down with the perfect accompaniment, two cocktails (135k) – the fruity Frozen Berry Margarita and a rum and peach liqueur Chenola, and then more ice cold Bintangs (60k). Japanese food doesn’t really need much of an introduction, as most of you reading this story would have tried it at some point, somewhere. It is basically the same everywhere, with small nuances deployed by the particular chefs, but the Japanese cuisine at Finns’ Sushi Bar does stand out in its presentation, quality of ingredients and appropriateness of the location. There is no better cuisine for a beach club.

itting atop the famed Double Six Hotel is the luxurious Plantation Grill restaurant, known for its stunning interior, top quality food & service and bodacious views overlooking the Indian Ocean below. If there was ever somewhere to impress a date, this is the place! The theme of the restaurant reminds us of the Great Gatsby, with classy marble finishes, a vaulted double-height ceiling and huge glass windows, screaming twentiesstyle luxury. So, dress to impress and prepare yourself for a taste into a grandiose grilled meat & seafood wonderland. We entered the venue via the beautiful spiral staircase, leading us to our leather booth where our friends were waiting for us with a bottle of red. As we sat down, we were offered a selection of baked goods, from a traditional Pandan flavoured bread to scrumptious croissants and gluten-free selections. The restaurants signature dishes revolve around dry-aged, exclusively sourced and imported meat and sustainably caught fresh seafood

cooked in custom made coal grills and woodfire ovens. So, we decided to mix it up and try a selection of their specialities.
FOOD We commenced the feast with the Classic Ceviche (140k), tasting as if it came fresh from the sea, featuring white snapper, prawn, octopus and your classic ceviche elements. We paired that with my personal favourite, San Francisco Fish Soup (175k), which includes mussels, clams, prawns, crab and fish steamed in a spicy tomato broth. Both simple and delightful dishes to get us started! The main event was next and did not disappoint. My date went for the Wood Seared Salmon Fillet dusted in Sumac (250k), a type of powder consisting of 35 different species of flowering plants and fruits, dried crusted around the outside of the Salmon and served with sautéed spinach, black rice and beurre blanc sauce. I went for a more carnivorous option, the 200gr Beef Tenderloin Fillet (440k), served with basil salsa verde, and paired it with Honey Glazed Carrots (65k) and Black Truffle Mac & Cheese (160k) to share. Safe to say it was tender and up to par with some of the best steaks we’ve tried around town.
We we’re all talking about how full we were feeling when suddenly, we got caught in a drive-by – the 1920’s Dessert Trolley drive by. For 95k you can pick out any dessert from the selection on the trolley. We went for the Mocha Mousse. After polishing off the rest of the delicious wine picked out by the excellent sommelier, we stumbled out, arm in arm, feeling more than happy and ready for the next chapter of the night.

The Beat Cafe Bali
Barman?
Barman: Steve Nothing sounds more relaxing than taking a day off to enjoy a tropical holiday filled with white sandy beaches, turquoise blue water, and of course, fruity cocktails. After your trip around Seminyak beaches, stop off at The Beat Cafe Bali to try the Tropical Beat (85K++). One of their signature concoctions, according to barman, Steve, is a brightly colored mix served in a long cocktail glass. This cocktail is a combination of shaken Vodka, Tequila, and Mango Puree topped with crushed ice and blue curacao. Garnished with mint leaf and lemon fruit, this icy treat will surely give you the crisp taste of summer. It’s all fruity, sweet and fresh, just as barman Steve said. Just a sip of one of these fun, colorful drinks conjures up warm tropical breezes and sand between your toes!

CD REVIEW
8/10 ska-dazzle
The Specials Encore Since their 2008 reformation, The Specials have been busy touring, but had seemed reluctant to work on a new record. The fact that the group – now a trio comprising of singer Terry Hall, guitarist/vocalist Lynval Golding and bassist Horace Panter – open with a cover version may well raise alarm bells. Fear not though, the way they attack UK R&B group The Equals’ 1970 hit Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys instantly dispels any reservations, raising the curtain on an album very much worthy of The Specials’ well-respected name.
Having formed way back when in 1977, it’s an impressive feat that most of the core members are not just still going but still rocking. The material is true to their 2 Tone/ Ska roots, yet feels as fresh and vital as it did all those years ago. There’s social politics aplenty (Golding’s autobiographical account of schoolyard racism in B.L.M.) and musical moves from Brechtian oompah (Breaking Point) to the slinky exotica of closer We Sell Hope. More of this, Please! Dan Ashcroft

You may be inspired to create better health habits, or to begin a new diet or fitness regimen. You’re learning about sharing your resources (which can include money, possessions, your time, and your energy) with others in this period. Favorable Dates: 11, 14, 20 Favorable Colors: Green & Red

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )
This period infuses you with strength of mind, quiet confidence, and strategic ability. You may be ready for a dose of passion, but don’t step outside the boundaries to satisfy your needs. Reflect on your own drives and motivations. If you’re involved in sport or intense physical activity, begin a regime of self-improvement in order to lift your game. ART
Forward Now- March 16th ALLCAPS Gallery
Bali is not generally known for its street art, especially in comparison with other Indonesian cities like Yogyakarta. Balinese culture, of course, has historically placed a high value on the arts, being home to a plethora of unique painting styles, not to mention wood carving, dance and music traditions. To break the boundaries, Bali’s First Urban Contemporary Art Gallery & Urban Art Consultants, ALL CAPS Gallery is now showing artworks by a Jogjakarta visual artist Cut Not Slices or Purna Sukma Hidayat. This exhibition will showcase popping bright colour of artworks by Purna that will shock your eyes. Check the interview on the next page. Jalan Raya Canggu, 18A
Art Exhibition by Galung Wiratmaja Now- May 6th The Oberoi, Bali. Indonesian Fine Art is proudly presenting an art exhibition by Balinese artist, I Made Galung Wiratmaja. In his paintings Made Galung seeks to explore the absence of sound, or silence. Art that attempts to depict silence can be regarded as being in a state of pure being, which can be compared to the Hindu concept of Shunyata. Consciousness without thought. Made Galung Wiratmaja has created an extraordinary exhibition. On one hand it is a successful evocation of the mystery and ‘silence’ of Balinese landscape, yet, on the other hand, Made imparts a gentle political criticism that does not distract from the works. ART
Purna Sukma Hidayat Born in Semarang, Purna Sukma Hidayat or @ cutxnotxslices pursued his childhood passion for art by studying design and advertising in UPN Veteran Yogyakarta. Slowly but surely he was determined to find his own character in the arts. Involving stencils, he has creates distinct yet exceptional pieces of pop art.
How did you begin your journey as an artist? Ever since I was a kid, I loved to draw pictures. I drew everywhere, in my binder or back of the book. I remember being told off by my junior high school teacher because my test paper had a lot of drawings on the back of it. I went to UPN veteran Yogyakarta in 2012 and chose to focus on advertising studies. Initially I really liked contemporary photography. I’ve been studying here and there for that until I got bored. At the end, 2014 was the start of my street artworks until now. Can you tell me more about your art? I myself don’t understand what genre of art I’m doing. I’ll say that it is a surrealism pop art. The technique I use is stencil. I make the small stencil first from paper, so that I can copy the image a lot and repeatedly. This technique is
similar to screen printing. However, some of my works have a touch of acrylic but only up to 10% of them. What is the inspiration behind your artwork? My inspiration comes from God, my wife, and the frequent contemplations and musings. I often draw people as the object of my drawing, but I’d like to call it a sign. A sign that must be united with text or other forms so that it can be a whole story. What’s your advice to fellow visual artists? The key of good works is to be different. In Jogja, all artists want to grow and develop differently from the the others. However, we still help each other. Anyway if there is no result for what we’ve been doing now, just take that as a way of practicing. No artist was born successful.

SPA
L’Spa at L Hotels and Resorts Embrace wholeness and embody happiness in Seminyak
Jl. Raya Petitenget No. 8L, Seminyak T. 894 7898
LOOK Nestled inside the L Hotel, within walking distance of many fun places around Seminyak, L’Spa is a pampering hidden gem located on Jalan Petitenget. Occupying the 1st floor of the hotel, this one room spa is adorned with an admirable modern interior and surrounded by dimmed lighting and soothing music. THE TREATMENT As we stepped into the lobby we were greeted by their friendly and hospitable staff who then lead us to the treatment room. We enjoyed their signature Gorgeous Diva treatment for 150 minutes (IDR 980K nett), a full on L Style beautifying ritual. Laying on the massage bed, our therapist begins the massage with gentle pressure across the back of the body and legs. With their lemongrass scented oil, the massage moves into a rigorous, yet therapeutic combination of long, gliding movements, skin rolling and firm kneading along the pressure points to warm and relax your muscle tissue. The therapist also applied some deep pressure during the massage in order to work on the muscle knots. However, the pressure was easily personalized as it could be tailored according to our wishes. The next step was a scrub application. The therapist chose for us their best scrub variant - a chocolate scrub which provides a powerful moisture booster and
stimulates cell renewal while firming up the skin. After the scrub, a series of other beauty rituals also offered in this package include a peppermint footbath, Hot Towel body compress and refresher facial. It is a guarantee that you will feel like new after you go through this entire treatment. INGREDIENTS L’Spa offers three variations of scented oil with coconut base. The options are lemongrass for a cleansing effect and ylang-ylang and Jasmine for relaxation. For the scrub, they provide some options including chocolate, green tea, coffee mocha, and kemiru. All of their products provide a noticeable healing effect for your body and mind and is also great for skin health as it helps bring back a natural glow. MAGIC With a variety of well-orchestrated treatments and professionally trained therapists, it is guaranteed that you will get full satisfaction on your trip here. The variety of treatments offered at L’ Spa will complete your pampering needs from head to toe as they provide facial, foot reflexology, body and head massage. Guests can also choose a variety of natural ingredients provided for each treatment like Balinese Boreh, Volcanic Mud, Basalt Stone, and many others. www.thebeatbali.com
