It has been very slow lately around the place and the rainy season has been holding on like the last gasp of winter snow, but there is a feeling in the air, there is a touch of spring creeping in and there’s a spring in our collective step! April is next and that normally means we start heading into the dry season proper and all that entails – namely the good times will be back, and back before you know it. There are plenty of major shows coming our way over the next weeks. Since OMNIA started early last year they have shown the way to do it like no-one else before them. Open air venue, all-round stylish concept, the biggest DJs on the planet and in a location so far removed from anywhere you would not believe it possible to get people there. However, the reality has been far from that. It’s been busy just about every day since and downright massive on the big shows. Right from the outset, and right from our first visit, which was documented here in the pages of the beat magazine, OMNIA is out of this world and a whole new experience. They celebrate their first anniversary for the entire month of April. More new-comers are on the way next weekend, this time in Echo Beach. The long awaited Lost City club will be opening next week and the 800 pax fitting venue is sure to make a mark in Canggu. We are yet to know exactly what we will find inside but come March 29 it will all be revealed. There are plenty of things on, check it all inside the mag and on thebeatbali.com and @thebeat.bali on Instagram. Happy hunting and happy holidays!

As we pass through another year of good times on the island, Nyepi gives us a chance to reflect and some time for self-introspection. Let go of all modern ways of living for a full 24 hours. This special day commemorates the start of the year for the Balinese and a unique start to the ceremony featuring the Ogoh-Ogoh parade taking place all over the island.

something for every palate. After dinner we found a couple of colourful palette’s labelled Sip, Play & Flirt with all types of passion sparking options such as edible body paint, a loaded cream gun, scented candles and chocolate fantasies. It’s safe to say that the W crew have thought about everything to make your stay that much more exciting!

The Beat had the privilege of spending it at The W Hotel Bali – Seminyak in one of their Marvelous Pool Villas.

On the day of Nyepi we wanted to respect the traditions and used minimal amounts of lighting & electricity, internet and even kept our voices low throughout the night. To make sure we were tired enough to sleep we took advantage of the gym and all the adjacent services, including the sauna, steam room, hot & ice-cold pool, oxygen therapy and their tasty Chill Bar. Afterwards, we moved onto the Away Spa and treated ourselves to a rejuvenating massage, completing the perfect day with a feast at the in-house Fire Restaurant.

As we arrived at the lobby and checked in, a sense of bliss swept over me, as if a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. A kind member of staff then proceeded to take our bags and we were off to see our home for the next two nights. Our plan for the afternoon consisted of using the state-of-the-art gym and then heading towards Lio Square to watch the parade, but the first part of the plan was dismissed as we entered the villa and found out how comfortable the bed was. A nap ensued and then a lush bubble bath before getting ready for the Ogoh-Ogoh parade. After the festivities, it was time to eat and thankfully the W’s 24-hour room service is top quality and quick on their feet! The menu features a vast selection of cuisines with

If you have ever stayed at the W you know that the service is number one. During our stay at the luscious villa, we were treated like royalty and felt the love all the way from check-in to check-out. So next time you are looking for a Nyepi escape, or any weekend escape for that matter, don’t hesitate to give the W Bali – Seminyak a call.

DJ Story #1 Bali Resident DJ’s DJ Morris Greece Hi Morris .. When did you become a Bali resident DJ? 2012 I started DJing exclusively for La Plancha and the following year the LYD group, opening La Favela and started playing there as well .. La Laguna, La Sicilia, La Brisa followed up and I was a resident DJ in all of them.

Favourite styles to spin? Ethnic sunset beats .. disco .. and of course, open format.

Tell us your background in music Like most of the DJs I know I am addicted music .. I needed it so much that I couldn’t stop listening and collecting music. Never felt complete until I started DJing and sharing all this music. From beach bars to clubs, restaurants or speak easy bars I had to play all kinds of different genres which was never a problem for me. I love all music not just a part of it.

(complete the sentence) “I love to play in Bali because” .... there is nothing like Bali !!

@morris_levis

Current Bali residencies Just closed all LYD residencies with an insane party in La Favela and now I am preparing something new of my own not just behind the decks.

Thankyou Morris. See you around the island. Where can we follow you? You can follow me “Down the Rabbit Hole” ;) .. and on instagram @morris_levis.

Escape

with Kaiser and Scott

After La Brisa built the second part of their venue, the big deck and pool, it was basically a no brainer and they started speaking to the venue and found that they really connected with the management. “This was super important in enabling us to deliver the best experience to our friends and family!” enthuses Kaiser.

Escape finds a new sunset home...

E

scape was first created by Kaiser Waldon and some buddies as a sunset to midnight party at Sydney’s iconic Manly Beach around seven years ago. He had already had substantial experience with Bali before this, and the dream always had been to bring the show to the island. “I teamed up with Scott Callaghan when I moved to Bali two years ago and Escape made its first landing at Jenja, which was an awesome Sunday night session,” says Kaiser to the beat. “However, something was missing, it was only half of the true Escape, half of what we are about.” They did another season at Red Ruby later, and then back to Jenja, but they felt they wanted to give people more than just a late night experience! “So we took a break and waited to find a venue that fitted perfectly with our Escape ethos,” Kaiser’s partner in Escape, Scotty Cal continues. “A venue that has an amazing sunset experience, open air, can stay open till late and is a world of its own.”

Things moved pretty quickly from then and before you could say, “Canggu’s gone crazy!” the boys had already announced the opening party for Wednesday, 10th of April, 2019. Yes, you read that correctly. “We are focusing on a mid-week celebration with Bali sunsets, dancing in the open air, watching the waves, feeling the sea breeze, making new friends and re-connecting with old ones! Escaping your week with a mid-week oasis of all of these experiences.” According to Kaiser, this is all underpinned by Balearic sunset melodies and a really big step in the evolution of the Escape brand. “Once the sun sets we connect with our more primal instincts with the big four to the floor, core groovy house and melodic techno sound that encourages you to really break out of your shell!” Kaiser continues, “This is for you guys, we get to show you a wider aperture, a deeper experience than our previous parties. There’s nothing like this on the island at the moment and it’s so true to our brand that we are blessed to be able to offer and contribute this to the Island of the Gods, adding it to the already high quality events and music scene here on Bali!” Get set for the launch of Escape at La Brisa on Wednesday, April 10. www.thebeatbali.com

Tropical Getaway to enchanted

Lombok

L

ombok’s pristine white beaches hiding in the bays of its dramatic coastline, divided by countless headlands and “Teletubbies” resembling rolling hills are in a league of its own. Despite its indisputable appeal and awe-inspiring scenery, the island still remains relatively undiscovered and overshadowed by its wildly popular sister island next door.

Which is exactly why we fell in love with it. When the hustle and bustle of South Bali becomes too much to handle, an escape to Lombok’s unspoiled tropical utopia is in order. One short bumpy boat ride later we arrived at the tropical oasis of Tugu Hotel. Its quaint estate is located on miles of unspoiled Sire beach on the Nortwest coast of Lombok under the looming Majestic Rinjani volcano.

46

www.thebeatbali.com

It seems like time has stopped here. The Tugu concept is unique in many respects. The resort boasts a collection of antiques brought to the site from all over the vast archipelago to showcase its rich cultural heritage. The traditional collection of buildings and unique art pieces sit under the towering palm trees on many hectares of perfectly manicured tropical land. The quietness is deafening. Catch up on your reading in the beach front gazebos, lounge by a designer pool or dine under the stars in the main building housing the restaurant. The historical structure’s pillars represent gods and appear to be supporting the roof on their heads. The many art pieces tell the legends of the ancient kingdoms of Indonesia.

FEATURE

The hospitality of the Lombok people is unparalleled and very genuine. They make you feel at home far away from home and happen to be one of the many highlights of the famed Tugu experience. Indulge in centuries old Indonesian massages in their award winning spa, take a stroll on the empty beach with dramatic views over the jagged West Coast, snorkel with turtles on Gili Islands – the three small tropical islets are only 20 minute boat ride away. Enjoy the most lavish and flavorsome breakfast poolside or pick your favorite spot on the property – at Tugu hotel every wish is made possible. If you feel adventurous, although it is hard to leave the otherworldly tranquil vibes of Tugu, go explore the charming island – we recommend the resorts’ signature trip to the majestic waterfalls. You’ll see the life of the friendly and resilient local people unfold in pretty much the same way it has done for centuries, while the emerald rice paddies frame the mountain range in the background, shrouded in the clouds.

At the foothills of mighty Mt. Rinjani, the two tall waterfalls hide in the jungle and the short trek down into the lush valley rewards you with views straight out of Indiana Jones. Amidst the verdant tropical vegetation, you’ll come across two spectacular falls cascading down in multiple different discharges over steep green cliffs. Tugu Lombok offers an experience like no other on a spectacular island that still remains largely off the main tourism radar – go and explore it now before it turns into buzzing Bali, big changes seem to be looming on the horizon for Lombok too. Bali Spirit Festival [music]

T

he 12th edition of the BaliSpirit Festival (BSF) starts next week on Monday March 24 and runs through to Sunday, March 31. It was founded as a premier international and holistic wellness and world music event that hoped to contribute positively to the ecological health, cultural vibrancy and overall vitality of Bali and Indonesia. Besides that, the festival has some of the best world musicians on the planet up on the main stage every night of the week, and especially on the weekend. Since last year, the BSF has had a new integrated venue, Bali Purnati, where both the day and night events are held, which is located 20 minutes’ drive to the South of central Ubud. While the BSF is all about a holistic, yoga and the Namaste way of life, it is also a great music festival featuring live and electronic music, and mostly a combination of both, on the main stage. We had the chance to speak with one of the festival’s founders, Meghan Pappenheim about the music line-up this year amongst other things and first we asked what, in her opinion, are

48

www.thebeatbali.com

2019

the pick of the bands and solo artists on offer this year. Meghan: “For me, these are the #1 artists. AIE - Edgar and Luis (Sunday, 7pm), Matui Te Huki (Sunday, 8pm), Tashoora (Saturday, 7.15pm), Maninas Da Lua (Saturday, 8.30pm), Althira Farina (Friday, 9pm), Porangui (Sat, 10pm) and of course, anything and everything that highlights Balinese culture.” How about the tickets and getting to see these wonderful acts? “There’s a week music pass that will get you into the day and night time shows for Rp1.5 million for the whole week. That will also get you into the community classes, the healing area and the market. There is also babysitting available for Rp 150k, but kids can take workshops for free anyway. A daily pass is also available for Rp 400k, which also gets you all of the above per day.” I hear there are after-parties happening this year, what’s that all about?

FEATURE “The after-parties will happen Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They are organized by Walker, one of the organizers of the Air Festival, and are open to anyone for Rp 200k entrance. They will be going from when the festival show closes until 3am so that will be a really nice after-party scene.” Any more highlights? “More highlights on the main stage for me, the female drum group from Brazil, Meninas Da Lua (Saturday, 8.30pm) is totally amazing. Deya Dova (Sunday, 9.30pm) is also a stand out, she comes every year and has that goddess, vibey thing going on, but maybe Brian Hartman is the man to talk to more on this. He’s the stage director and knows all the bands personally. Brian Hartman: I think the very first thing we need to say is that, from the BSF perspective, we want to highlight the Balinese and Indonesian acts and bring the Indonesian and Balinese culture to the forefront. But we do have a number of top flight international acts starting with our Saturday night headliner, Poranguí (Saturday, 10pm). He’s a Brazilian solo artist using loops with a very tribal feel and is a true rising star in the world music scene today. Another artist who is blurring the lines between electronic and live

music is a man named Uji (Thursday, 8.15pm). He’s trained in Berkeley College of Music in Boston, formally one half of famed Argentine duo, Lulacruza (Who also played at BSF a couple of years ago) and has now set out on his own solo carrier. He is now one of the up and coming artists in the electronic music scene, but when we say the electronic music scene he’s really blending folk music from all over South American into a hybrid of electronic and live music. These two acts, Poranguí and Uji are really special and we are very fortunate to have them along. The third act I want to highlight is Deya Dova (Sunday, 9.30pm), who Meghan talked about earlier, who has her own style, a combination of electronic and live music. She is known the world over for her grand performances, costumes and amazing performances. So we are very excited to have her close out the festival on Sunday for us. Don’t miss the BaliSpirit Festival for an extraordinary experience in the sounds and sights of the new age, holistic Ubud world. It’s a very enjoyable and enlightening good time for all. www.balispiritfestival.com

Creamery has long been famous among the Ice Cream aficionados in Bali and their freshly churned Nitro Ice Cream has earned them a cult status. The team behind it just recently opened a NEW super grammable parlor at Tamora Gallery and it’s straight out of the Willy Wonka world – mute pastels of pink and yellow meet bright shades of turquoise. The jars of colorful toppings sit neatly organized on the shelfs and its glass walls connect the inside with the outside. They’re conveniently located right next to the impressive Tamora kids playground, ideal for letting the little ninjas zip around and snap out from the ice cream coma. They’ve got badass 2-for-1 promos too, every Saturday you can knock yourself out on their fantastic Ice Cream Sandwiches. Try the fluffy chocolate sandwich with vanilla

ice cream, positively life changing. Mondays are for 2-for-1 all natural, creamy, thick, no artificial nonsense added milkshakes. We’re also head over heels for their Sundaes, Creamery has an extensive menu of their own creative concotions, but if you feel like a daredevil, you’re encouraged to create your own – we go all out and experiment with combining a gajilion toppings. Another fave is strawberry ice cream topped with gummy bears and sprinkels – it’s a kiddo special, but we like to revisit our happy childhoods thru its taste! If you want your Ice Cream made fresh right in front of your eyes – they use liquid nitrogen and watching the steam coming out of the machine is just as much fun as eating the icy cream afterwards.

INK Bali Words & pics by Vero

Ink is our new favorite neighborhood Japanese resto. But before we get into why our taste buds love it so much, first things first – they just recently rolled out an ALL you can EAT Sushi Monday Promo and it starts at only 150k, so if you want to keep your Sushi game strong, this is where it’s at! But Ink Bali is not just another regular Japanese food spot. Sure they’ve got killer rolls and sushi, but they also dish up fantastic Japanese comfort eats - think cheeseburger stuffed spring rolls or zingy popcorn chicken. Imagine very decadent mixed in with a healthy pinch of crazy! Don’t forget to check out there line up of hefty rice bowls – if you feel like carb loading after a surf session. Splash it all down with their signature Lychee Martini. Elevated enough for a romantic Sushi date, but casual enough for a midweek dindin with your besties, Ink offers a great value for the money with their 2-for-1 Cocktail Specials daily between 4-6pm, Tipsy Tuesdays with Sochi Highballs “Chuhai” for only 35k and - did we mention the All You Can Eat Sushi Monday enough? Interior décor is on point and funky, just as much as the creative concoctions on the menu. Ink stained walls feature a mural filled with quirky characters, our favorite is the surfing sumo warrior.

Ink is located at a recently opened Tamora gallery, right next to their epic playground. It also happens kids eat free every day, so pop in to feed the whole fam after a play date. We promise you won’t be disappointed. If you look for a Japanese food that is top quality, big on taste, but won’t cost you as much as a flight to the US, then Ink is about to become your favorite neighborhood spot too!

CD REVIEW

8/10 Yes Yes Yes!

Karen O

Lux Prima Coming in way too long after its titular single dropped at the end of last year, Lux Prima is a luscious, groovy, sexy affair that shows what happens when two creatives at the top of their game put their heads together. Handling vocal duties (and allllll of the sex appeal), flamboyant Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O flirts, coos, sighs and stomps her way through the track listing – each song expertly crafted by hip-hop-savantturned-super producer Danger Mouse. It’s a devastatingly simple yet effective dynamic, from the twinkly jazz of the opening track and off-kilter downtempo beats of “Ministry” to the

phenomenal disco strut of “Turn The Light” and White Stripes-y rattle of “Woman”. The closing suite of “Reveries” and “Nox Lumina” is a particularly atmospheric high point. O is on top form, carrying on where she left off from last year’s colab with Michael Kiwanuka on “Yo! My Saint” – her soul-pop sass providing the perfect foil to Dangermouse’s lo-fi funk. The results are just sublime, Lux Prima’s nine tracks a joy to navigate with these two at the helm. MUCH, much more of this please. Dan Ashcroft

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS The Beat astrologer Manish Kumar Arora reads into the next two weeks. Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

The period begins with a real burst of energy, confidence and power. There will be a trend towards greater flow of personal income but be aware that the flow can just as easily come in and go out if you’re not careful. Your mind often will run along moneymaking ideas and anything that has to do with communicating those ideas. Writing and teaching could add to your personal income. You will be more attracted to unusual plans, fields and concepts. Exposure to new ideas open up a new world to you. Favorable Dates: 21, 25, 3 Favorable Colors: Yellow & Grey

A spunky period for your love life occurs this month, when your charm is super and romance fairly sizzles. Partnered Cancerians will be having a good time. It is a fabulous opportunity period for scheduling a romantic getaway. You are destined to meet someone who will jump at the chance to take you out of a lonely situation. There will be an excess of romantic energy. You are likely to make changes in your life that break you out of your usual routines. These changes are unlikely to be jarring or dramatic–quite the contrary. Favorable Dates: 23, 26, 29 Favorable Colors: Blue & White

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

You are due to gain recognition in your professional life and sexual and romantic satisfaction will follow close behind. Your public image and professional affairs will demand extra time and responsibilities, but the rewards that follow will be worth it. Don’t be surprised if you suddenly want to start or end a relationship. You would crave love and loyalty from your favourite playmate. You are emotional, sensual and very alluring to members of the both opposite and same sex in general at this time. People who like to play with fire will be instantly attracted to you. You become aware of what you have and haven’t accomplished to date. You are now treated to a realistic look at what you have built and achieved.Take a new class, upgrade your skills and keep moving. These little things will make huge differences in both your personal and professional life. Favorable Dates: 22, 28, 1 Favorable Colors: Red & Yellow

You are likely to feel more confident and enthusiastic about your ability to earn a living and you may choose to develop your talents in order to boost your earning power. However, you may also be just as inclined to splurge on yourself, plumping up your nest or your store of personal possessions. Ideals and spiritual goals that you may have taken for granted or worked with for many years seem superficial or not particularly useful to you now. What makes you feel comfortable and secure needs to be balanced with attention to other people’s needs and comfort levels. Favorable Dates: 25, 31, 1 Favorable Colors: Yellow & Brown

ART

Tien Hong Tien Hong is a Balinese artist born in Kintamani. Even though he never imagined himself becoming an artist before he went to ISI (Indonesia Art Institute) Denpasar, today, he have been collaborated with other artists in more than 14 exhibitions. One of them was a recent on-going exhibition at the Griya Santrian, Sanur.

How did you begin your journey as an artist ? At first, I never imagined I would be an artist, but after I finished high school, I went to ISI, which was a college I had never heard before. It’s just because my brother told me so. Lots of funny and interesting moments happened when I just started studying. There were times when it wasn’t easy, but after the middle of the semester, I began to slowly enjoy it and found my skills totally sharpened.

is the effort to find the most essential meanings in paintings. An expression of deep feelings after experiencing contemplatation of things that are experienced or seen.

What genre did you study? All genres are taught at the college but I found myself interested in abstract painting. Which tends to give more space to the freedom of your imagination. A lot of accidental overlaps that make the colours looks attractive. Basically, abstract

Do you have any message you want to convey to your audience? I have no message to convey. Because abstrack art tends to break away from the elements of nature, or social, environmental issues and other physical nature.

What inspired you most in your artwork? Nature. Nature gives many colours, as well as paint on weathered walls. Overlapping paint on a weathered boat inadvertently provides many comparisons in colour composition.
