Keeping kids safe with Scholars of Sustenance Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) are giving away 1000 helmets to local kids in need over the next months, as they have observed how young passengers are often seen on motorbikes without helmets. SOS targets good nutrition and are the pioneers of Food Rescue, helping raise awareness on food waste and helping feed tens of thousands of mouths in need! Now they want to target traffic safety and help protect all those Bali children heads with free helmets, because if at least one of the first 1000 helmets saves a child’s life then it was worth their efforts! If you would like to find out more about SOS visit www.scholarsofsustenance.org/ or their Instagram page or visit them at their Bali office on Jl. Pararaton 9 E, Dewi Sri, Kuta.

SCOOP Experience the most sacred day in the Balinese Pawukon year One of the most fascinating and traditional events in Bali,Tumpek Wayang is the final and most sacred day of Tumpek in the Balinese Pawukon year. This closing event unites each of the eight dates of Tumpek, welcoming a shift in the seasons and bringing together thousands for sacred reflection. The event is linked to Lord Kala, God of the Underworld. Accordingly to Balinese lore, Lord Kala was born an Ogre, due to the wicked union between his Godly parents, Shiva and Uma. The Balinese believe that any child born on this date carries negative energy, so locals host the famous sapuh leger shadow puppet shows for a purification process and scare Kala away. You can experience the most holy day and magical in the Hindu calendar at Besakih or your nearest temple on Saturday 20 april.

UBUD FOOD FESTIVAL 2019 From 26–28 April 2019, Indonesia’s most outstanding chefs, producers, restaurateurs, entrepreneurs, food photographers, storytellers, scientists and activists will converge in Bali for the Ubud Food Festival Presented by ABC (UFF). This festival’s full lineup of 100+ chefs, entrepreneurs, farmers, food writers, scientists and activists along with 23 Special Events, 18 Kitchen Stage demos, and offers a 1, 2, and 3-Day FoodLover Pass. In its fifth year, the Festival has grown into Indonesia’s leading food event, and the nation’s primary platform for sharing its diverse culinary culture, unique local produce, and top restaurants. UFF19 will be generously seasoned with the theme Spice Up the World. Book your seat via ubudfoodfestival.com now before it’s too late!

Sundown Sessions at Woobar W Bali – Seminyak will be partnering up with club culture magazine Mixmag to host a series of sunset gigs live from Woobar, starting with Sebastian Leger. The partnership will be a year long collaboration to further enhance the premium music offerings of W Bali – Seminyak, consisting of three Sundown Sessions with the first one kicking off on Saturday, April 27. All Day I Dream / Lost & Found DJ Sébastien Léger is no stranger to Bali and for very good reason. Léger has consistently been one of the forward-thinking producers on the house and techno scene over the last two decades, understanding the scene better than most. As usual, there will be no entrance fee for this event and if you register online, the first 75 registrations receive a free welcome drink.

EDX 36

www.thebeatbali.com

M

Maurizio Colella is an eclectic Italian-Swiss DJ and producer known as EDX who celebrated 25 years in the industry last year. He has been an integral part of the house and EDM scene for decades, hosting parties all over the world and playing alongside the most highly regarded DJs on the planet. Following the ultra-busy year of 2018, which saw hits like “Jaded”, “Anthem” and his “Make Me Feel” remix top the Beatport charts and amass millions of streams, it is the start of a new year and time to reach new goals for the Italian DJ. We caught up with the Grammynominated DJ before his gig at Sky Garden on the 5th of April to get an insight into his life. Hey there Maurizio! How are you? Hey what’s up guys! I’m doing really well thank you. I’ve just come back from a really long tour and now I’m spending a few days with the family and in the studio before I head to Miami for Miami Music Week. What are you most looking forward to about your Asia tour? Wow, my Asia tour is going to be crazy! I’m playing seven shows across China, Japan, Thailand and Indonesia with my homie Croatia Squad, which I’m super excited about as it’s always a lot of fun being able to play with friends on tour. I’m really looking forward to coming back to Bali, one of the most relaxed places in the world, and you guys have always been big supporters of my music. I can’t wait to play some EDX music for you all! How do you find the balance to keep touring and producing whilst maintaining a healthy life style? I learned very early on in my career that nutrition, sleep and a healthy mindset are some of the most important things to ensure a long

FEATURE

and successful career in the music industry. I’m able to express myself through my music to the world, which is already making me feel great as it’s such a special gift. I also think you have to be the sort of person that loves to travel, as that is a big part of the job, but for me I see it as a blessing – being able to experience new cultures and meet new people all over the world is just amazing. Can you describe your sound to our readers who may not know what it’s about? Haha, that’s a question I get asked a lot and it’s actually very simple. If I had to describe my sound in just three words, it would be Make. People. Smile. I want to create a really great vibe when I play my music and I want people just to have fun and forget any daily worries that they may have and be in a space where they are free. What kind of vibe can we expect to hear at Sky Garden? Sky Garden is a really special place. It’s a big big venue that attracts real music lovers. You can expect to hear a lot of EDX tracks for sure. I know a lot of my older tracks are doing really well in Indonesia, but I also want to play some of my newer signature stuff for you guys too. If you want to spend a night dancing to sexy groovy music with your friends, you should come along. It’ll be a great night.

Bali Spirit Festival

2019 By Veronika

The global yogi community gathered again this year near Ubud to celebrate Yoga, Dance and Music. An impressive line-up of world-renowned yogis, spiritual leaders, musicians, performers and participants paired with Bali’s mystical, spiritual atmosphere “combusts” in a one of kind experience. Now in its 12th year, BSF has earned a legendary status, drawing an alternative, diverse crowd from all over the world. This year included over 500 workshops, classes and performances. Every day was jam packed with yoga, dance, meditation, breathwork, inspirational talks and a plethora of other activities.

38

www.thebeatbali.com

Danny Paradise was again a standout with his fun, dynamic Ashtanga yoga classes and Shamanism seminars, do not miss out on this one in 2020! Tymi Howard – dubbed “the teacher of teachers” has an almost otherworldly vibe about herself, her Vinyasa classes are supercharged with positive energy and her mastery of yoga is awe inspiring. The festival’s venue near the idyllic town of Ubud, looks like a tropical utopia. Surrounded by emerald green rice paddies and lush verdant valleys, the grounds of Purnati Art’s center – home of the festival for a week, features multiple semi open pavilions, atriums and stages, interwoven with hang out lawn areas filled with colorful beanbags, art work and large scale art installations.

FEATURE

At Dharma fair you can get anything from your new yoga gear to aromatic essential oils and original jewelry. To have energy for it all, there is a “delectable” selection of food vendors right in the middle of the festival grounds – you can have anything from a vegan hot dog to delicious Indonesian Nasi Campur, splash it down with a fresh young coconut or activated charcoal and you’re good to tackle yet another downdog.

The music night events were designed this year with a vision to create more intimate experience and held at the festival’s main venue with the central stage right under the stars. Mission accomplished - the music portion of the BSF felt surreal. One of the many highlights was an expressive performance of Brazilian rhythms by Meninas Da Lua and the goddess-like Deya Dova and her colourful, magical dancers. Inspiring and connecting on so many levels, we can’t wait for the BSF 2020 already!

The festival is super family friendly and has a ton to offer to the little ninjas as well. From face painting to kids Acro yoga to art classes and epic playground, there is plenty to keep the mini-yous entertained.

DJ Story #2 Bali Resident DJ’s DJ Archie Indonesia Hi Archie, when did you become a Bali resident DJ I was a resident DJ in Jakarta for years before I moved to Bali and had my first residency at Mano Beach House in 2016. Tell us your background in music I grew up listening to jazz, old school hip hop, beats and boom bap; I was infatuated with drum and bass a lot too. I played lots of drum n bass growing up. Then I discovered soul, funk, and disco along the way when I was digging for the original samples of beats that I liked and the crate digging went from there. Favourite styles to spin? I don’t really have a preference to a specific style, I like to just let

everything flow at the moment. I trust my ears and I just kind of play. Current Bali residencies Potato Head Beach Club, Manarai, Mano Beach House, and Paddy Grooves Radio. (complete the sentence) .. “I love to play in Bali because ....” ... I live here and I love doing what I do. Thank you Archie, See you around the island. WEIRD

GENIUS Creating stories one track at a time

Weird Genius is an Indonesian electronic music supergroup hailing from Jakarta that has been making waves since their conception in 2016. Reza Oktovian, Billy Taner and Eka Gustiwana have brought their signature sound to the international stage by using traditional Indonesian instruments and combining them with electronic elements. Their first international debut release “Dreams” put them on the music industry map in 2018, released on Yellow Claw’s Barong Family record label. Their following single “Irukandji” was a festival favourite and soon enough were playing gigs for Yellow Claw’s Indonesian Tour and regular gigs at local clubs. We caught up with the trio to delve into their meteoric rise in fame and what’s to come. They play LXXY Wednesday, April 10, 2019.

FEATURE Hey lads! How’s it going? What are you guys doing this weekend? We are doing really well, thank you so much for asking! We have a show that we’re going to do this weekend in Pekanbaru and we are super excited! Next week, Bali! Talk to us about how Weird Genius all started. The idea of making a dance music DJ group first came from Eka and Reza, who were both already influential on the internet (Reza in the gaming scene and Eka on the music scene) and have a hidden passion of dance music. Wanting to make that a reality, they came up with a plan to make a musical movement. I (Billy here!) was still a solo DJ who was performing around Jakarta before the three of us met, but on one fateful day I met Reza for the first (and second time) and got invited to join the group as the DJ. The three of us met for the first time at a bar near Tanjung Duren (it’s a neighborhood in our hometown of West Jakarta) and we discussed a lot of things from our musical influences and musical style, the type of music we want to make, and a name. We decided on “Weird Genius”. Your DJ set up incorporates live instruments. Can you walk us through that? Yes! In our live setup, we combine the conventional DJ set (CDJs and mixer) with a keyboard and launchpad (sometimes a drum pad and cymbals). On each song we play (edited tracks), there will be added sounds and musical effects that Eka plays while we perform. Therefore there is a “live” feeling on the set we play, adding more flavor to the performance. What kind of Indonesian instruments do you use for your tracks and which tracks can we hear them in? We have this one particular song that incorporates traditional Indonesian instrument, the song is titled DPS. We made the song three years ago and it is actually the first song that we made! Sweet Scar also contains the sound of Suling.

You guys appear to have a close affinity with Bali? What are some of your favourite clubs on the island? Every time we go back to Bali to perform or to make music, it always feels like home. Bali is a magical place for us and coming back is always a pleasure. Fave clubs? All of them. Have you got any exciting projects/ collaborations/releases coming up? We’re going to have two collaborations in the near future. Just wait and see! How would you guys describe your sound? Melodic, Orgasmic, to the point and weird. What are some of your career goals? Where do you want to be in five years? We hope that in the next five years we will still be able to create stories through our music, inspire people to create and feel music, to bring the local EDM industry to the international stage, and of course, be a game changer. Last, if you were to be stranded on an island with an iPod and 3 tracks, what would they be? This is a hard question because we love LOTS AND LOTS of different music. But if we were stranded in an island and can only have three tracks on our iPod, those songs would be: a. Jon Bellion - Simple and Sweet b. Porter Robinson - Sad Machine c. Air Supply - All out of Love Thanks guys! Hope to see you at LXXY next week, Wednesday April 10.

Barman: Heru If you’re looking to sing and dance at EC Karaoke, you might need a tasty cocktail and according to Heru, chief mixologist at the bar, The Whisky Sour is the perfect start. The whiskey sour is one of the best classic cocktails and is very easy to mix up, said their barman. It’s a mixed drink containing bourbon whiskey (Jack Daniel), lemon juice, sugar, and a dash of egg white. As the name suggests, this cocktail is sour, but the sweetness of some whiskeys and the simple syrup offset and complement its tartness. Balance is the key with the whiskey sour. So, at the end of a long day or week — if you just want a nice, tasty drink, the Whiskey Sour is a simple, go-to classic for a reason (100k net). Try is next time you are having a good ol’ sing-a-long.

CD REVIEW

7/10 horse-power

Foals

Part 1 Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost With the departure of long-term bassist Walter Gervers late last year, front man Yannis Phillippakis stating on Twitter that this album would be something ‘entirely different’, and a title that sounds more like advice from the I.T. dept, Foals’ fifth studio album it sounded like things had really gone off the rails for the Oxford ‘it’ group. In the lead up to part one of this double release (the second is out in September), concerns had been swirling that Foals may have lost their creative edge – opting instead for a carpet bombing of new tracks in need of a good editor to sift out the belters. Happily, lead single “Exits” immediately dispels any fears with its super catchy riff, clap along

beats and driving bass line. The warp-speed drumming and angular synths of “White Onions” hark back to the hallowed math-rock of debut album “Antidotes”, while “On The Luna” and “In Degrees” are both master classes in spiky indie-pop – all warped keyboards and funky disco chords. So far, so on brand, but the oddities of “Syrups” and “Café D’Athens” do take a big step out of the their comfort zone (the jury’s still out tbh). However, penultimate anthem “Sundays” pulls everything back together just in time for the finale. It seems Foals really can’t put a foot wrong right now. Dan Ashcroft

ART

Iwan Sastrawan Iwan Sastrawan is a Balinese artist born in Denpasar. After he graduated from studying architecture in Udayana University, he joined exhibition groups and has collaborated with other artists in more than seven exhibitions in Bali since 2009. How did you begin your journey as an artist? I’ve been interested in art, both visual and musical, since kindergarden. I like to observe people. Their physicality, behaviour, relationship, etc. In elementary school I made a mini porn comic, that I shared with some friends, but my parents got very angry about it. Then I tried making rock band posters on friends’ books, bags or on sheets of paper during junior high school. But then my focus on people as my object began getting bolder during high school. I’ve made portraiture pencil sketches and began getting comissions from it. After I graduated from my architectural studies in Udayana University, I used to make sketches and illustrations about my daily life. It’s like a diary basically. Then a friend asked me to join a group exhibition. After that, I joined more group exhibitions. I expressed myself and my thoughts with tiny nude people which were drawn with pen on paper.

so far is about simple daily life hiperbolicly delivered with acrobatic nude people who live in a world without light, shadow, gravity, the sky and ground and one thing is caused by another. What do you like the most about your artwork? What I like the most about my art is the process. Get the idea, find the way to present it, and the details, like what is the pose for this figure, that figure, what is a strange object that I should use. The process is like meditation for me. What message do you want deliver to your audience? Hopefully my work can be a “mirror” for people. Without blaming, without judging, without advising. Just as a mirror.

Where do your ideas come from? Most of my work is talking about daily life, about people’s behaviour, character, etc. My work,
