PNNY PNNY is a Bali-based DJ collective that have been making massive waves in the local music scene overthe past couple of years. They hold the fort at Pablo’s and stay busy with weekly residencies at Luigi’s, The Lawn, La Brisa and Vault to name a few, as well as regularly featuring on some of the best line ups this island has to offer. We caught up with Gilang aka @todaysrenaissance for an insight in to what makes PNNY tick and what’s to come.
42
www.thebeatbali.com
What have PNNY been up to in 2019 and what are some of the biggest gigs you’ve had so far? We have been trying to keep things moving, trying to make sure Trigan gets off Apex Legends haha. We’re planning a little PNNY Europe tour this summer so a lot of our energy is going towards that at the moment. We’ve got Renate in Berlin and Garbicz Festival in Poland as well as a few gigs in Amsterdam and Paris lined up. We’re super excited and feeling super blessed to be heading over there.
FEATURE Our biggest gigs are always when we all play together, nothing better than a PNNY fam get together. We’ve also had Tera Koraa and FS Green grace us at Pablos. We’ve had some exciting headliners join us at our PNNY x Basement Love events this year including; ATA, Perel, Peak and Swift, Cinthie, Massimiliano, DJ Seinfeld to just name a few. PNNY took over Pablos in Canggu in 2018. What nights should people come and what kind of music can they expect? Yep! We joined forces with The Boogaloo, it’s been fun! Our main nights are Rumble In The Jungle, our hip hop night on Wednesdays and Arcade on Friday which is a more disco and house vibe. But we also have a quiz night every Tuesday and Taco Thursday which is 15k tacos and beer all night long. Have you got any newcomers to your collective? Man, the collective has grown heaps since we first started. We started off with myself, Dubwill, Alex Verdacchi, Trigan Young and Arfi as our manager. In 2016 we hooked up with our bro bear Andy Chunes, then Theo Radennata in 2017. In early 2018 our young gun Kiran joined along with Equal Who. Each one of these boys play such a vital part in forming PNNY’s identity and its each of them that has allowed us to form such a solid crew. Musically speaking, what do PNNY stand for? Can you give us a few tracks that encapsulate the PNNY sound? Ha, that’s both the hardest and the easiest question. It’s hard because we don’t really have one color that we do in terms of music. But it’s easy because apart from it being all over the place you know exactly what kind of vibe you’re going to get when you come to our parties. It’s that vibe and that energy that makes us so unique across the board. A couple of tracks that have come around a lot lately are:
Holiday by Madona Only you by Steve Monite Montreal By Benjamin Damage Lots of edits by Fs Green, Jaël, Jarreau Vandal and heaps more, the list goes on. What kind of events have you got planned for the near future? We have plenty going on right now, the newest one would be our collaboration night with Basement Love at La Brisa. We are also launching our newest HipHop night, Jungle Boogie every Wednesday at the new club Vault in Berawa. And a few more exciting things, stay posted! What do you think about the scene in Canggu these days? What are some weekly parties people should look out for? I think Bali in general as a scene starting from late last year has been super strong. I think last week we had six or seven huge international artists in one week. I think that all of the music heads, collectives and clubs should be very proud of what we have been achieving as a whole, music wise. I mean, I started DJing because I hated the music scene here and now I find it hard not to go out and party all the time. Hmm what parties they should look out for, alright promotion time haha Luigis - Metto Monday Pablos - Rumble in the Jungle on Wednesday Jungle boogie at Vault Wednesday 3rd Base Luigis every Thursdays Pablos Arcade Fridays Orange Soda every second Saturday at Vault Basement Love x PNNY at La Brisa every other Saturday Secret Sundays at The Lawn Follow @pnny_ on Instagram to keep updated on their upcoming gigs!

FEATURE DJ producer, Lloyd will be headlining the next Escape party at La Brisa on Wednesday, May 15 and The Beat had the chance to catch up for a few words on his extended sojourn on the Island of the Gods before the gig. Tell us a bit about yourself; age, from where, how did you get into DJing? Okay so I’m 36 years old, I know I don’t look it..... thank you ;) I’m from a town near Manchester in England called Bolton. My journey into DJing was kinda interesting. I went to Burning Man in 2011 and stumbled across a small party in the desert at a place called Nexus. Picture the scene, it was like a sphere framed huge structure under the most amazing of skies at night and inside and behind the decks in front of no more than 150 people was Seth Troxler and Jamie Jones playing back to back one track each off vinyl. Seeing everyone with no phones just dancing intently focused on them and the music they played and what they were doing I was hooked. I had been going to Ibiza for years, but never had I really grasped on the art till then. I was like, I want to do this! As soon as I got home I bought the cheapest pair of second hand decks you have ever seen. They were hardly even decks, Lol. I immediately took a picture of them and uploaded it to Facebook with the caption - ‘all the gear, no idea ‘. Then the strangest thing happened. At that time I ran my own club nights and one of the clubs I had worked with in the past called me and immediately said, ‘we didn’t know you DJ’d, come play for us’... obviously, I didn’t know how to DJ which was a problem, so I told them I was fully booked for two months and I would after that... So I was like “damn... I need to learn”. Classic! So you were a mature aged DJ novice. What was it that got you hooked? The camaraderie, the community, the sounds or the atmosphere? For me it was the energy it created in the room. And how the beat was almost like a guiding light for the people on the dance floor. Also.
With a lot of house music you have to fill the gaps in yourself. What I mean by this is with a normal song which has a chorus and verse you are told how to feel, you are given emotions mainly by what is being said. With house music a lot of the time you have to internalise it and personally tell the story to yourself of the track that’s being played. I remember Villolobas playing the Amnesia terrace one year in Ibiza literally putting me and my mates in a trance for hours as we danced. I don’t think we talked for like two hours. So it becomes really personal. What kind of music do you like to play? I play a really wide variety. I started out very tech house, but then over the past two years the genre started to become very same same, a lot of the tracks started to sound similar and add on top of that, I got my Ibiza residency for a brand called HOTBED which plays a lot more vocal early 90’s style house so I started to switch it up. Right now, I’m a happy medium between disco, vocal house & tech house. Tell us about HOTBED, what are they about? HOTBED was started by the guys who run Abode. Abode is a huge party in England and Ibiza, they have Amnesia every Thursday in Ibiza and have people like Eric Morillo, Fisher & Skream play for them. I had played a few gigs for the Abode brand and the owners came over and asked me if I wanted to get on board with their new concept HOTBED and be an actual resident rather than just playing Abode now and again.

Weekend getaway to Ubud Words & photos: Veronika
This charming mountain town has it all. Framed by steep, jungly river valleys, swaying palm trees and emerald green rice paddies, it’s a quintessential Bali town with a temple on every corner, smoking incense sticks in the colorful offerings placed in front of every Hindu compound. But watch out for the hordes of tourists and the mind boggling traffic. A plethora of vegan and vegetarian cafes, mixed in with specialty coffees that could easily be found in San Francisco plus some real fine dining options. Where to eat: Try Seeds of Life for some uncooked supercharged goodness, these guys are real alchemists and they take the raw food movement very seriously. You won’t even get a coffee here, but order one of their herbal elixirs instead! Milk & Madu Ubud, for an Aussie flare synonymous with that perfect cup of coffee and phenomenal breakfast. Locavcore: book at least two weeks ahead. In a relatively short time this famed establishment achieved a cult status taking the Ubud food

MILK & MADU Words & Photos by Veronika MILK & MADU Jalan Pantai Berawa 52, Canggu IG @milkandmadu www.milkandmadu.com
The Berawa superstar café burnt down last year, but at least it allowed them to be a bit dramatic: rising like the proverbial phoenix from the ashes only to be bigger and better!
The café now features elevated ceilings, feeling very bright and spacious and also has an epic playground for your little ninjas to zip around while you sip on your umpteenth cappu.
Now you can get the excellent beans by the Brotherhood – they’re Australians, so that is affirmative on some solid specialty coffee, paired with everyone’s favorite neighborhood brekkies. Do not miss out on Madu’s new menu additions – they just rolled out exquisite “Crispy Corn Fritters” topped with wild salmon and beet relish. Try them once and you’ll be hooked plus your belly will thank you for it.
Milk & Madu has a reputation of a breakfast powerhouse (so get in there early, the tables are going fast) but do not be mistaken, their lunch and dinner game is just as strong. Think abundant salad bowls (“Byron Bowl” is a winner!) plus it is a home of the famous Lava Stone PIZZA - spot on for dinner. Do not forget to check their Instagram for special deals daily!

Don’t worry though, there are plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options available, if you’re one of them. Forget about the world outside and enjoy a meal and a few drinks away from Canggu’s crowded streets.

FOOD the four-course paired Best Sellers Set Menu (295k) and chose a few stand-out dishes from the ala carte. We embarked on the journey at Spice with a pairing of Beef Rendang Croquettes, a delicious rum re-interpretation of the Old Fashion cocktail. A divine way to start our date; sweet & spicy with a touch of class in the glass. For our next few courses, we sat by the open-face kitchen, watching the action up front. A number of dishes were being plated simultaneously, including the flavourful Spice Salad (95k), Tuna Tataki (95k), Pan Seared Baramundi Fillet (135k) and colourful Pork Belly & Crispy Skin (145k). The Spice chefs use subtle yet inventive techniques within each dish – the Tataki was cooked so well, lightly seared on the outside and juicy on the inside, with a hint of cream to balance the dish. The Baramundi had a vibrant Balinese style pesto sauce that tasted divine with its cocktail pairing. Not to mention the Pork Belly dish, with its turmeric tinted sauce and incredibly balanced flavours to go with it.We recommend to choose the pairing, as each sip from the drinks offered complimented and accentuate the culinary trip throughout the entire experience.
It was time for dessert and we thought it couldn’t get any better. But the reality is that the standard at Spice is so high that there is a delightful surprise around every corner. We tried the Pineapple Cake (45k) and the Deconstructed Banana Kolak (50k) paired with the scrumptious Pino de Bali. A truly memorable meal but that wasn’t the end! Head bartender Bili Wirawan treated us to some of his latest creations, which again did not disappoint. If ever in Ubud, Spice is a must-try! www.thebeatbali.com

Barman: Villa Villa, the head Mixologist at WooBar, is back with another playful and inventive concoction. Inspiration behind the beverage comes from the eco-friendly trend—a clever play on single-use plastic cups. Eat Me Slowly, as the name implies, is a cocktail that’s designed to be eaten as you sip on it. The sweet mixture sees whisky paired with tropical flavors of maraschino, lychee juice, peach syrup, and lemon juice. It comes served in an edible jelly glass complete with icing sugar and a cherry on top. Light, fruity flavors make this an ideal beverage to enjoy poolside at W Bali Seminyak’s famous Wet Deck.

CD REVIEW
5/10 Stealing Sheep Big Wows After a couple of false starts, the Liverpudlian trio of Rebecca Hawley, Emily Lansley and Lucy Mercer seem to have almost found their groove on album number three, with half an album’s worth of glittery disco-infused uplifting tracks and easy-on-the-ears female harmonies. Lead single and opener “Show Love” is a prime example, all airy steel drums, wonky synths and booty shaking beats with a suitably catchy chorus to tie it all up with. “Back in Time” and “Jokin’ Me” follow it up with a darker, preclub kinda vibe, while the Lily Allen-influenced “Why Haven’t I” injects a nice dose of sass. However, by the time we get midway through proceedings to the pointless interlude of “Just Dreaming” the wheels begin to come off.
Although the title track does offer up a few edgy grooves, the saccharine mess of “Breathe” drowns out the harmonies and instead throws together some horrible voice modulation with a genuinely nauseating bass line. “True Colours” follows a similar schizophrenic pattern, and by the time closing crapophony “Heartbeats” rolls around, Big Wows’ early promise is all but forgotten. Part of the problem is a lack of focus; a decent whittle down to EP length would have saved a lot of wasted time, but in all fairness it’s not a complete disaster. There are plenty of big wow moments, just not enough of them to carry a whole album. Dan Ashcroft

MANISH’S ZODIAC PREDICTIONS The Beat astrologer Manish Kumar Arora reads into the next two weeks. Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )
Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )
This is a time when you send down roots and seek a feeling of belonging. You could be thrust into a position of leadership on the home front. Special attention to and from a partner is in focus. One-to-one relating appeals to you more than group activities. Smoothing out your close personal relationships is what makes you happy during this cycle. If single, you are more willing than normal to enter into a committed relationship. In general, you are adaptable when it comes to your affections. Favorable Dates: 7, 9, 15 Favorable Colors: Green & White
This period’s emphasis is on making contacts and reaching out to others in both a social and professional sense. It’s a time to turn inner restlessness into fruitful contact with others. Surprises concerning work or health matters are likely to pepper in this period, keeping you on your toes. Love is more than likely found through work or professional interests. The practical aspects and implications of relationships are in focus. You light up the career stage with your insight and innovative ideas. Synchronicity places the right connections on your path to teach or coach. Favorable Dates: 2, 10, 11 Favorable Colors: White & Red
Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )
Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )
You are feeling reflective rather than expressive. The spotlight is on other people for the time being, and it’s best to let them shine. Concentrate on truly listening to those close to you, and on playing a supportive role. Goals that involve networking, making connections with others, joining or strengthening ties in a group activity and nurturing goodwill are the focus in this period. Heightened awareness of your position in life within the context of the group, rather than through self-centered focus, is a need for social security. Favorable Dates: 2, 8, 11 Favorable Colors: Green & Blue
This is a time during which you can enjoy increased powers of concentration. You may require solitude in order to get mental work done during this cycle. Your thoughts often turn to personal matters, family, and loved ones. Some of you will experience revealing situations after a struggle. It would be wise to observe whatever powerful feelings that confrontations or conflicts arouse under this influence. After 21st is a great time to open up conversations with loved ones, as you are more rational when it comes to personal matters now. Favorable Dates: 4, 7, 10 Favorable Colors: Grey & Blue
Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June )
Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )
Your credibility is important at this time and efforts at selfpromotion might be made now. Your humanitarian impulse may be stimulated. The role you play for other people in your life becomes the focus. You may feel that your schedule gets overloaded at this time with things to do. Romance is a sphere of life where you may experience some rocky periods and if left untamed, could cause upsets between yourself and your friends. This will be especially so when others challenge your reasons or motives for certain actions. Favorable Dates: 2, 3, 11 Favorable Colors: Green & Grey
You will have all sorts of ideas about what you want to do. However, avoid allowing the ego to attempt to dominate others. You are more curious and alert than usual and you could be quite busy with errands, paperwork, phone calls and light socializing. Much energy is expended in understanding and adapting to your immediate environment. Personal and social contacts may be secretive and there can be secret love affairs, or at least very private love feelings and longings. However, shyness can lead to some loneliness or romantic frustration. Favorable Dates: 3, 7, 12 Favorable Colors: White & Black

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )
Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )
It’s time to carve your own path in life. There is much initiative now with personal involvement in new ventures or undertakings. You are striving for independence and freedom of movement in everyday affairs. New ideas that offer exciting challenges appeal to you now. This placement reacts strongly on a personal level and circumstances could require you to take the lead in certain situations or activities. At this time, you instinctively know how to place yourself in the best light in order to make a good impression on others. Favorable Dates: 2, 3, 11 Favorable Colors: White & Purple
This is an especially introspective cycle during which you have the chance to truly uncover your personal strengths and talents. On a more practical level, you may be dealing with joint finances and shared resources now more than usual. Financial security, professional prestige and social status are the dominant mental issues for the time being. This is a time to collect yourself–to fill your well. You are mostly cheerful and vibrant in your approach to others. You enjoy talking about what interests you and you see value in the exchange of ideas. Favorable Dates: 6, 10, 15 Favorable Colors: White & Red
Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )
Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )
It could be a time when much of your energy is channelled into private matters, or when you prefer that others not observe what you are doing. It’s time to strike a balance between your own needs and those of another. Partnership tests are possible now, but so is a chance to truly connect to a special someone in your life. After 15th, the workplace takes on a feeling of newness and opportunities to travel or teach present themselves. New friendships appear on the horizon and spark you to share your ideas and goals. Favorable Dates: 2, 8, 11 Favorable Colors: White & Yellow
This is the cycle in which you focus on having fun, enjoying romance, and expressing yourself creatively. Your hobbies, leisure time, moments spent with children, all come into focus during this period. The ability to express and communicate your ideas is extremely important to you at this time. This is a cycle in which you find joy in expressing who you are. Your popularity is increasing, and is reinforced by your own ability to cooperate and harmonize. Romantic inclinations are also highlighted, as are any kind of celebratory, playful and just-for-fun endeavors. Favorable Dates: 2, 9, 11 Favorable Colors: Red & Blue
Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )
Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )
You are feeling most adventurous and willing to take a leap of faith. This is a cycle in which you seek a higher meaning to your life, and seek out new experiences that take you beyond the here and now, and beyond the mundane details of day-to-day life. Anything that broadens your experience attracts now. You will seek chatty and restless friends who stimulate your curiosity and mental abilities. Negative potentials include being excessively opinionated or getting easily fired up over differences in points of view, or legal fights. Favorable Dates: 3, 11, 12 Favorable Colors: Purple & Grey
You are more willing than usual to explore life’s secrets. This cycle brings greater in-depth understanding and an inclination to delve beneath the surface of matters to get to the bottom of them. There is strength in your feelings of love and the power of attraction, which may open the door to new romantic relationships. You would attract more if you allow yourself to be pursued during this cycle. You will also thoroughly enjoy artistic, musical, or cultural events and activities, especially in the company of a loved one. Favorable Dates: 3, 8, 12 Favorable Colors: White & Yellow

Silent Dialogues April 18 – may 16th, 2019 Metis Gallery Metis Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Nadya Lesnaya “A Silent dialogue”, Indonesia in Potraits. Nadya Lesnaya is an artist whose creative work is built on the transition from impression to expression. Her work in the current art period focuses predominantly on portraiture. Water is the binding basis in Nadya’s technique, creating a cyclicity of statics and dynamics of acrylic strokes, she plays with intensity and colour, giving water more freedom. Thus, at the end of the process the artist leaves a sense of slight incompleteness, allowing the viewer to bring in part of their own state of mind to the painting. Jl. Petitenget no.6, Seminyak

SPA
Ashoka Spa
at Bali Dynasty Resort LOOK Ashoka Spa is part of Bali Dynasty Resort’s family of in-house attractions. The spa is refined and minimalist in design with traditional eastern influences. Each room feels calm and intimate with a lush outdoor garden area that gives off soft, natural light. THE TREATMENT Ashoka offers a complete range of treatments from traditional Balinese and Thai massages to beauty treatments such as hour long facials, manicures, and pedicures. We treated ourselves to the Ashoka Signature Massage (IDR 335K)—a 60-minute treatment designed to rejuvenate weary travelers suffering from jet lag. You are presented with a choice of three unique scented oils used for aromatherapy before the treatment begins. The relaxation session is preceded with a warm herbal foot bath where your therapist will gently cleanse your feet. The therapist starts with a moderate pressure, squeezing and pressing into the back of the legs and body. The massage then progresses into a restorative ebb-and-flow of slow, gliding strokes as your choice of scented oil is incorporated in. You’ll feel your deep tissue knots begin
to unwind as vigorous thumb, knuckle, and elbow movements do some targeted kneading. Treatment is concluded with a balancing massage on the stomach and head, as well as some light stretching. You have the option to take advantage of the saunas and showers afterwards. Alternatively, your masseuse will wipe you down with a warm towel. The experience is completed with a warm lemon-ginger drink that will leave you feeling revitalized. INGREDIENTS A cool peppermint spray is used to coat your feet after the herbal bath. The aromatherapy oils on offer are reviving ginger and lavender, energizing lime, and relaxing frangipani and jasmine. MAGIC The incredibly attentive massage therapists make this experience unique and personal to you. The organic element of the integrated garden area was equally pleasing. We felt a part of nature as the sounds of birds chirping and water running provided a tranquil backdrop to our massage.
