SCOOP Bali Arts Festival
The Bali Arts Festival is a celebration of the island’s unique culture and Balinese identity going down on June 16 – July 14. The annual event enters its 40th edition this year as it continues to showcase the very best of the thriving local art scene. The festivities kick off on June 16 with a grand opening parade around the island’s capital district. But don’t worry if you aren’t able to make it that day, as performances will be held daily for a whole month until July 14 at the Denpasar Arts Centre (Taman Werdhi Budaya), Jalan Nusa Indah, Denpasar. Everything from art exhibitions, musical performances, handicrafts, modern and traditional theater make routine appearances here. The festival also celebrates delicious Balinese and Indonesian cuisine for all the foodies out there. Stay tuned for the detailed line up on www.baliartsfestival.com.
HQ Beach Club officially launches into Sunday Kuta beach sometimes gets overlooked in the modern day Bali scene, as young people continue to be dispersed all over the island, but that area, just left at the end of Jalan Pantai, Kuta is still one of the best places to catch white sand, blue water, cold beers and the most amazing sunsets on the island. Add to that, an enormous pool and direct access to the beach, grooved sounds from Danny Technici and DJ Dodger and later live music during dinner and you have quite the beach club scene right in the corner of Bali’s most famous beach. Who needs to go anywhere! Next Sunday, June 2nd, HQ Day Beach Lounge, which is beachside of Grand Inna Kuta, will be officially launching their new Sunkissed Sunday Sessions, which will be every Sunday now through the summer. If you are in the area, drop by to see what all the hype is about, you will be thanking us you did.

SCOOP NewEarth Festival 2019 The NewEarth Festival celebrates art, beauty and consciousness, while calling attendees to action in facilitating real change. The gathering is taking place on June 19 – 25 and will combine film, fashion, music, ecstatic dance, yoga, and traditional Balinese ceremonies meeting frontline activism. Join the NewEarth family this June, along with a host of visionary creatives, change makers, and thought leaders as they inspire and create positive impact in our daily lives. Open your mind to radical solutions as you expose yourself to workshops and seminars that will have your perspectives, values, and priorities shifted. The immersive week-long event will host a line-up of pioneering international speakers and experts addressing the most critical issues facing the planet and its population. The inaugural World Health Sovereignty Summit will be held here for three days, along with a historic two-day seating of the ITNJ Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Weaponization of the Biosphere. The event will take place at the NewEarth Haven, situated amongst the rice fields just outside of Ubud.
Deus Bike Build Off The Deus Bike Build Off is a definitive favorite in the custom-motorcycle community. The event calls all “wrench botherers, amateur tinkerers and fettling fetishists” to design and devise innovative bike builds in a wild competition between the best on Saturday, July 13. The theme is to have builders create the most with the least—favoring ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness over expensive parts. This philosophy usually makes for some really interesting and humorous creations. Deus’ attitude towards the world of motorcycles is reflected absolutely in this celebration that sees the brand returned to its roots. For the first time ever, the competition will include a global online platform where builders all over the world can upload their builds. As usual, however, Deus holds celebration events at all of the global flagship stores around the world throughout the month of July. Our local edition will be held at the Canggu location on Saturday, July 13, from 12pm - 6pm. Come down and enjoy what is sure to be a spectacle, alongside live music, DJs, and cheap food and drinks. www.thebeatbali.com

The Rebels x Red Bull Gold The Rebels video marks Red Bull Gold’s first foray into a web series, featuring famous Indonesian artists such as Luna Maya, Valerie Thomas, and Keanu Campora. The narrative follows a handful of young adults in London whose lives become intertwined as they experience hardships and triumphs. It is a coming-of-age story that sees its protagonists venture out into the world and break free from the shackles of expectations in pursuit of true passion. The Rebels invites us to look to Red Bull Gold when we need that extra dose of strength and stamina to overcome the challenges ahead. The premium beverage contains a number of ingredients created specifically with this goal in mind—taurine helps with improved performance during physical activity, caffeine for increased concentration, and vitamin B complex to help with the body’s metabolism and energy production. S*A*S*H
S*A*S*H has been the premier weekly Sunday house music event in Sydney for the past eight years. Spanning two of the best venues in Sydney, Greenwood Hotel & Home the Venue, the event has become the pilgrimage site for 1,500 folks every Sunday and over 5,000 on a long weekend. S*A*S*H is set to get Sunday on the boil here on the island of Bali on June 2, 2019 The Beat spoke to the director and DJ founder of S*A*S*H, Kerry Wallace about the S*A*S*H concept and, in particular, the Bali show. Focus? Our focus is creating a musical bridge between Europe and Australia with strong, contemporary underground house music, with a relaxed Sunday afternoon atmosphere. For the Bali show, we will be shipping in a MASSIVE stack of Funktion-One gear to make sure things sound as crisp as they should.
42
www.thebeatbali.com
Music? S*A*S*H is solely focused on the music. Dyed Soundorom, Voightmann, Chris Stussy, Toman, Enzo Siragusa, John Tejada & Traumer are all highlight guests we feel encompass the S*A*S*H soundtrack. Venue? We spent a few days scooting around the island looking at options and once we took in the endless pool overlooking the blue ocean waters, the big bar by the palm trees and the large patio area – we knew this was the spot. Vue Beach Club.
FEATURE as the venue fills out and the main man Rossko takes the reigns. Going Places? We all know how quickly and easy these things escalate and we’re pretty confident the same will happen here. After? Rest assured - we’re not leaving you high and dry at the end of the party as we’ll be announcing a secret after-party very soon.
Expectations? You can expect an afternoon of down tempo Sunday afternoon house grooves distributed by our large Funktion One sound system brought in from a neighbouring island. Expect the perfect sunset view alongside the sinking of cold beer
On the decks? Besides Rossco, from Sydney there will be me, Kerry Wallace, and our two residents GABBY and Jake Hough will be the first of our Australian’s to represent the black and yellow S*A*S*H flag. Each of them excelling in their own sound and nuance, Kerry leans towards the chunky sleazy house sounds while Gabby’s technicality, darker and left field selections moves floors weekly across our events with all things proper classic house and warm notes falling under Jake Hough’s hat. S*A*S*H is on Sunday, June 2 at Vue Beach Club, Berawa, Canggu.

DJ Story #5 Bali Resident DJ’s Echa Indonesia Hi Echa, when did you become a Bali resident DJ? I came to Bali in 2008, been stuck here ever since .... help! Tell us your background in music. After falling in love with dance music and learning to DJ, I started throwing parties in Jakarta and producing music. Accidently made a hit and got some recognition, toured Indonesia and Asia, fell in love with Bali and decided to make this my home. Favourite styles to spin? A mix of soulful rnb, old school & new school hiphop, funk .. with a dash of latin vibes, dancehall, moombahton, reggeae and if the vibe fits, rock music.
Held a residency at Sky Garden for 10 years. Now I do regulars slots in Los Gringos, Red Carpet, La Favela, Lxxy, Sva Canggu, Mirror and still touring Indo clubs and festivals. (complete the sentence) .. “I love to play in Bali because ....” Of the vibe, because I can explore myself musically, different crowds and vibes every night that make me always push myself to be better. Plus, the traffic is not as bad as Jakarta LOL. Thankyou Echa, see you around the island. Where can we follow you? www.soundcloud.com/echa0361 www.instagram.com/echa0361 www.twitter.com/echa0361

TREASURE ISLAND
Renowned for being the residence of a ferocious fanged demon – who flies to Bali with his invisible henchmen as great balls of fire to spread pestilence and famine, Nusa Penida has long been associated with myth and black magic. On Dutch colonial maps and ancient navigation charts, the island was marked with a skull and crossbones, warning sailors to stay away, and from the 18th century until the 1930s, it was a place of banishment – a penal colony – for criminals, undesirables and political agitators from Bali’s Klungklung Kingdom.

U
ntil recently this mysterious foreboding island received few visitors apart from diehard surfers and divers, and guests on the day-cruises that stop for snorkelling activities at Crystal Bay. The island had little infrastructure and was lacking in tourist accommodation and facilities; only a stone’s throw from Bali, it felt like a hundred years away. Yet Penida is now shaking off its secretive persona and becoming an intriguing new destination – an untouched wilderness home to towering limestone sea cliffs, dramatic karst pinnacles, and some of the region’s most idyllic beaches, a place of spectacular beauty, spellbinding views and kind, sincere people. where well-maintained asphalt roads wind through a dry and hilly, earthy landscape. Much of the west and south coast is only accessible via pothole laden roads, best negotiated on a motorcycle, although you can expect to feel every bump and jolt in your spine. Nevertheless, a treasure chest of epic scenery awaits at Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong, and Kelingking Beach – where a peninsular forms the shape of a T-Rex with a leg-buckling vista of a goldensand cove, approached via a perilous cliff-face descent. Further south, Pura Gunung Cemeng is a temple balanced atop a pinnacle; from the neighbouring cliff-tops, you can watch graceful manta rays gliding through the translucent waters 200 metres below.
One of a trio of islands, a 30-minute fastboat ride from Sanur, Nusa Penida is ripe for adventure, and popular with day-trippers. There are no large resorts or fancy restaurants here but a fair number of homestays, budget hotels and quality warungs, most of which are newly built and located on the north coast,
Nusa Penida is also a haven for rare birds. Here, the Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF) has been re-populating species such as the Bali starling, Java sparrow, lesser sulphurcrested cockatoo, Mitchell’s lorikeet and the red lory, via a captive breed-and-release programme since 2004. This, and a plunder of riches, from hidden bathing pools, waterfalls and holy springs to virgin rainforest, remote villages, and a subterranean temple cavern await the intrepid explorer at Nusa Penida. We also never skip on their cute and equally flavorsome Mini Tacos and an absolute must try is the Black Cod Miso. No dinner is complete without a dessert and the Chocolate Molten cake packs a big punch with the gooey center oozing out of the soft and moist shell – we promise it will make your taste buds sing. Do not forget they also have fantastic daily promos – 2-for-1 Cocktail Specials from 5-7pm and Kids Eat Free with dining parents. If that is not a steal, than we don’t know what is.

The restaurant features delicious Heritage Dutch Indonesian cuisine and a whole lot more on the menu. The heritage listed, colonial style building has been immaculately refurbished to its original glory and the indoor/outdoor, high-end restaurant, but with super reasonable prices, is a first for Denpasar. The original Braga Permai in Bandung was first opened in 1923 and is still one of that city’s favourite restaurants. There is live music in the outdoor courtyard area every night from 7.30pm. It’s a credit to the team, Denpasar should be proud and it comes highly recommended. Pictured above left: Ancient wood oven from Badung.

Mejekawi translates to sacred table in Balinese, which is pretty much how it felt once the food started arriving. We started off with delicacies like the Scallop Ceviche served in a mini cucumber along with pomelo sambal and pink peppercorn. The wrapped Drunken Crystal Prawns followed, paired with a fine Matua Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough. It just kept getting better though, as Chef Steve brought out special creations like a Brioche Doughnut served with sugar cured salmon and cultured cream that was to die for, as well as a decadent Nori Farfalle with chilli mussels and prawn head crackers. 100% Yum! What Do You Recommend, Salazon Indonesian Rijstaffel Rice Chef: Salazon
CHEF?
For those looking for an authentic taste of Indonesia, try the Indonesian Rijstaffel Rice at Salazon. The Rijstaffel is a feast in itself, with many self-contained dishes that capture the diverse flavors of the vast Indonesian archipelago. The meal is centered around some of the nation’s culinary heavy-hitters including a colorful turmeric-coconut chicken curry, rich soy-braised pork, succulent fall-apart spiced beef, shredded chicken in spicy sambal, and zesty mixed vegetable lawar. If that weren’t enough, a selection of smoky chicken, beef and fish skewers are also included. Last, but not least, the incredibly crispy paru adds an unbelievable texture to each bite—definitely one of our favorites. To top it all off, the meal is served with four sets of unique sambals each with its own distinct flavor. The Indonesian Rijstaffel Rice is as much a feast for the senses as it is for the belly; you’ll find no shortage of flavors and aromas in this dish! If you’re looking to eat your way around the country and do it cheaply, look no further then this insane value of a meal at just IDR 175K per person.

Rip Curls Mirage 3/2/One Ultimate Boardshorts
L
et’s just start by saying that Rip Curl are regarded as the one of the best, if not the very best producers of boardshorts for surfers around the world! I tested out the new Mirage 3/2/one Ultimate boardshorts last weekend and was so happily surprised with the result in the surf. The water was warm, the waves were pumping and I had the perfect shorts on. Damn, it felt good. I was able to get fully vertical, pop the fins out and it almost felt like I was naked half the time. The shorts are tight where they need to be, soft and comfy in the areas of need and designed with a new advanced Cordura fabric to make sure the reef doesn’t rip you up. Not to mention the perfectly placed zips for keys and phone.
The obvious goal is to make the surfer as comfortable as possible, and that’s exactly what they do. But with the new designs accommodating such a sweet aesthetic you can wear these shorts just about anywhere and you won’t look like a surfed-out beach bum. They look slick and pretty sexy if you ask me. They dry in a matter of minutes, which means you don’t have to lug around a bunch of spare clothes for your after-surf Nasi Goreng. Say goodbye to all the rashes and welcome incredible comfort to your life. The Mirage’s are truly the ultimate boardshorts! Available in two designs, get your pair for Rp.799,000 IDR at www.ripcurl.asia or at any of their stores on the island and abroad.

The collection features a selection of carefully designed wetsuits, boardshorts and men’s apparel that has been available around the globe since April 15. Mark was chosen to collaborate because of his artistic values and love of surfing. “Before he was an artist, MadSteez was a surfer” says James Taylor, Rip Curl’s Group Creative Director. Mark mentions; “This collaboration is a synergy of my two worlds, painting and art, and I think we have made some really rad stuff.” Rad indeed, the collection incorporates the MadSteez signature

ART
Encounter Now until June 6 Titian Art Space
Encounter is a solo exhibition featuring the works of Balinese sculptural artist I Wayan Jana. As the eldest son of a famed sculptor, you could say he has been molded to pursue this profession since his youth. Jana uses his hands to transform wood into subjects that represent his inner thoughts instead of trying to recreate physical objects. The works center around a concept he describes as ‘the meeting,’ where new life begins and continues. The sculptor uses symbols of Hinduism to represent this concept: the globe (men and women), the tooth (good and bad) and the heart (love). You can see his works at Titian Art Space in Ubud until June 6, 2019.

to reach a state of ultimate relaxation as your therapist works through the rest of your body. Upon completion of the treatment, you are welcome to use the private outdoor shower or request to be wiped down with a damp towel. A warm ginger-honey beverage awaits you in the lobby to seal in the restorative effects of the treatment. INGREDIENTS Montigo Spa’s uses only natural ingredients bought from the local market and crafted all oils and ointments in-house.
You select one of three distinct aromatherapy oils before the treatment begins depending on the sensation you are after—either sensual, revitalizing, or energizing. Your therapist will invite you to soak your feet in a mild lemoninfused bath as she applies a scrub that will exfoliate and renew thoroughly.
A crisp peppermint, sea-salt scrub is used during the foot bath. The aromatherapy oils include an energizing rosemary, spearmint, and lemongrass; sensual black pepper, sandalwood, cedar wood, and ylang-ylang; and revitalizing ginger, black pepper, and peppermint.
As you lay face down, the therapist will loosen you up with brisk squeezing motions over the entire body. The oil of your choosing is then worked in as the kneading deepens into long, spiraling strokes. The massage transitions seamlessly from the upper and lower body in what seems like one unbroken movement. The harmonious, almost hypnotic, flow allows you
