SCOOP Deus 9ft & Single Surf, Art, Film & Music Fest 2019 Canggu’s temple of cool is back with another long weekend of art, music, film and surf. This year, Deus ‘9ft & Single’ event consists of four days and nights of festivity and foolery— promising to be bigger and badder than previous years. The festival will kick off bright and early Thursday, June 13, going well past after hours every day until Sunday, June 16. During the day, the Deus tribe makes camp beachside for a spectrum of highly-anticipated surf competitions. Ice cold beers and a roaring barbie will be on hand to enjoy the all-day spectacles. With good tunes, good vibes, and good surf, it will be the ultimate place to kick back that week-end. When the sun comes down, the themed nightly festivities begin. On Thursday night, Deus will showcase its latest videos at The Backyard Cinema. Friday night is music night, with five bands performing back-to-back jams all night. An art exhibition by Bali-based artist Andrew Wellman is on the cards for Saturday night. Finally, on Sunday will be the Wrap Up Party, where awards will be given out and drinks will be downed. You will likely see folks letting loose into the early hours of Monday morning.

Each guest will present and speak on a series of 20 images for 20 seconds each—the signature 20x20 format keeps things fast, fun, and concise. PechaKucha began as an event in Tokyo for young designers to meet, network, and showcase their work to the public. It has since spread like wildfire becoming a popular event with creatives all over the world. If you are prepared to uncover the unexpected, then head down to Betelnut Ubud on Friday, May 31 starting at 7pm.

SCOOP A Plastic Planet Campaigners are aiming to touch the lives of one billion people as part of One Plastic Free Day on June 5 this year. As part of an international day of action that will coincide with World Environment Day, people are asked to take a photo of the one thing they want to go plastic free and post it across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram with the tag #oneplasticfreeday. From your drink bottle, biro and toothbrush to the pointless plastic bags wrapped around bananas, or even the plastic drink stirrer that remains useful for a matter of seconds yet remains on the earth forever. This major new visual report is set to shed new light on the extent of the global plastic crisis, identifying hotspots around the world. The photos will form the basis of an interactive world map on oneplasticfreeday. com and following the June 5 results will hopefully make the government and big business make their own plastic reduction pledges. Help this non-profit social impact movement for change, find out more on www.oneplasticfreeday.com.

Syam Halim is in his early thirties and was born in the music hub of Bandung, West Java. We’ve seen a lot of talent pass by over the years from all over the country, but right from the first moment, the first strum of his almost un-tunable acoustic guitar at The Beat around two months ago, it was obvious Sam had more passion and ability than just about anyone who had ever strummed a guitar there before. He may look a diminutive young fellow, but man, he packs a punch. The Beat had the pleasure to ask Sam a little more about himself. How did you get into music? Since very young I really liked singing, but I never developed it, until around the age of 17. I began to know more about music from friends hanging out on the street, or at home, anywhere where there was music in the air. I could have been happy just idly singing but I felt a desire to play guitar and sing. Long story short, I have an older brother (kaka), and sometimes he liked to bring his friend’s guitar home. When my kaka was strumming the guitar I could only try to pay attention on how to play a cord while I followed the singing, but when the guitar wasn’t being used, I started trying to play it, but it was very difficult to play guitar while singing. Eventually I asked how to play the guitar, asking about the chords being played, and after a long time I could play a little guitar and sing at the same time, which I was very happy about, but only a few songs. In 2004, some friends invited me to play with them in a restaurant. Finally I joined them full time and learnt more songs. From there I felt that there were many friends who are into the same music, so we share a lot of musical stories and not only personal life. So once I got going I ended up making a lot of friends in the Bandung music scene playing a lot of music in bars, weddings, birthdays and gatherings.
Where do you think your passion for music comes from? I think it’s the connection I have with the music and then the people listening. From the note that can reach my heart so that there is a response from my mind, and that involves a feeling. Talking about music for me is very broad and clearly involves my feelings. Have you ever made your own music? After a while in the band back in Bandung we started writing our own songs and finally we made an album, but unfortunately the songs were never mastered, and a year later the band collapsed... and I was out again busking for my dinner. Have you tried to write more stuff? Yes as a soloist I am writing more songs. Still in process though. When did you first come to Bali? A friend invited me to Bali to replace a member of his band near the end of 2017, but I only stayed for five months and I resigned because I thought it was not my passion. I always wanted to play in Bali so I came back again in May 2018. The music scene in Bali has plenty of space and I am always learning something. What are your main influences in music? Radiohead, Coldplay, The Cranberries, all the 90’s music. You can catch Sam Halim at Minang, Nusa Penida every Sunday to Tuesday, Wednesdays at B9B on Seminyak Beach and Thursday and Saturday at The Beat.

DJ Story #6 Bali Resident DJ’s Kembar Bula Indonesia Hi Kembar, when did you become a Bali resident DJ? I moved to the island about 6 years ago, because I had dreams of a life in Bali. About vibes, people, and chill ... Tell us your background in music. Well, my father listened to good music every morning. Sounds likes Jazz, Soul, Boogie. So after graduation I started throwing parties and getting into the underground scene in 90’s Jakarta .. and of course digging records. Favourite styles to spin? Basically sounds that create a good atmosphere. Balearic, Disco, House. I have always tried to do the best for the guests.
Current Bali residencies I hold residencies at Manarai Beach House, Mano Beach House and Woobar W Hotel. (complete the sentence) .. “I love to play in Bali because ....” I can see waves, awesome views of sunsets and meet people from around the world and appreciate the music of the island. For sure the energy of Bali. Thankyou Kembar, see you around the island. Where can we follow you? www.mixcloud.com/LAYUR

FOOD SCOOP Great steak that doesn’t wreck your wallet - Ikimura
Ikimura restaurant opened last week on Jalan Pantai Kuta and is a Japanese Steak House. Japan is known for its top quality beef and we feel Ikimura restaurant will quickly become known for excellent and affordable steak in a Japanese style. Ikimura is a play on words. While it sounds like Japanese, it actually means ‘this is inexpensive’ in Javanese, which sums up this new Kuta restaurant rather well. In the Japanese fashion, the menu is simple and direct to the point. There are 10 steak dishes including Ikimura’s signature dish; steaks with rice or Donburi (pictured above), which start at a price of Rp 65k net. The 150 gram serve of aged beef, comes three different ways, is super tender and served on a bed of Japanese style rice. The secret mirin-based sauce is where the magic lies. There are also higher-end cuts of beef available, served and cooked on a hot plate, but don’t sweat it, they too are also at very reasonable prices. 200 gram Australian Angus steak at Rp 95k and US Wagyu cuts at Rp 250k. This simple, cozy and excellent ‘value for money’ Japanese Steak House, situated right in front of Kuta Beach, is a must try eatery if you are looking for top quality steak, cooked to perfection and at great prices. And let’s face it, who isn’t looking for all that?

xperience true culinary luxury at The Legian Bali’s one and only restaurant – The Restaurant! Not only are the uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean right in front amazing, but the service and quality of food matches the surroundings perfectly. The menu highlights fresh organic Balinese produce and the exceptional skills of newly appointed French Michelin-star chef, Stephane Gortina. After joining the team two months ago, Stephane went through and changed about 95% of the menu – adding his special touch to every dish and emphasizing on robust flavors. His culinary style combines modern and traditional methods, using French and South-East Asian flavours inspired by his travels around the world and region.

FOOD As for the main course, we opted for one poultry and one fish dish – choosing the Roasted Chicken (260k) and the Steamed Baramundi (260k). The latter of the two using purely fennel and shellfish as the condiments, from the fennel marmalade, fennel seeds and fennel leaves to the whole glazed fennel and raw slices fennel as well as the fennel flowers. It was fennelicious! As for the chicken, the chef uses chickpeas to create all types of different textures and feelings in the mouth, amounting to a very well-balanced dish with plenty of excitement. We were blown away with the techniques used.
The spacious, fine dining brasserie-style restaurant offer everything from light and healthy to creamy and outright naughty, from breakfast through to dinner. However, The Restaurant really turns into a romantic oasis as night falls... The flames on the border of the pool are lit, the jazz musicians start to play, the lights are dimmed and the wine begins to flow. And Head Chef Stephane recommends a table on the terrace under the stars.
When it comes to dessert, my date and I never ever say no. And wow, were we grateful we had a bit of space left because these treats were to die for! The Chocolate Fondant (140k) was traditionally oozing to perfection with the added touch of ice cream and blueberries adding to the magnificence of this dish. The Cheese Cake Our Way (140k) was a bomb as well, balancing the madness with an exquisite raspberry sorbet, to end yet another, amazing Date for Two.
We commenced our meal with two starters – one from the dinner menu and one from the lunch. Both dishes comprised of marinated fish, the Salmon Gravlax (170k) sourced from the icy waters of Norway, where the salmon is caught in its natural habitat and tasting as fresh as can be. My date enjoyed the Marinated MahiMahi (190k), served with palm tree heart and passion fruit – this dish showcases Gortina’s ability to use French techniques with 100% local produce and totally nail the flavors. We could have licked the plates clean! www.thebeatbali.com

STYLE SCOOP Indosole
The footwear brand started almost by accident when founder Kyle Parsons broke his sandals during a trip to Bali. By chance, the pair that he bought to replace the damaged ones made from repurposed motorbike tires. The unique look and backstory prompted Kyle to learn more about the product, eventually learning that one billion waste tires end up in landfills every year. Indosole was launched in 2009 in an effort to alleviate this immense waste problem on a larger scale. Not only is the product extremely eco-friendly, it is also incredibly durable and longlasting—making sure that broken sandals are a problem of the past. The brand has taken their mission even further by supporting high work standards for local artisans and becoming certified as a force for change. You can find their products all over Bali and at their Canggu flagship store.

National Treasures
The National
I Am Easy To Find After seven albums you might think you’d know a band and their sound pretty well. As Brooklyn’s The National have grown from cult indie band to Grammy winners, long term fans will have settled into their music stylings: pretty much America’s favourite liberal rock band. But their eighth LP is something of a curveball. These 16 tracks are, unequivocally, National songs, and yet they hold little of the immediacy of their predecessors. There is familiarity, but alongside that come strings, samples, new song lengths and structures. The upshot is that on early listens “I Am Easy To Find” sounds dreamlike and misshapen. It takes a while for this to pass, but as the best moments begin to emerge
from the fog, they stand up against the bands best work. “Where is Her Head” is a rhythmic clatter with shades of Arcade Fire and Brocken Social Scene, while the near seven minutes of Not In Kansas is an homage to a golden yesteryear. It all comes together most succinctly on the duet “Hey Rosey”, where one of Bowie’s old collaborators – Gail Ann Dorsey sings low and steady and with a force that goes beyond the barbed lyrics. It’s a shake up of things indeed, but a welcome one for a band as assured as these guys. Dan Ashcroft

Folkin’ good
Josh Ritter Fever Breaks Idaho native and former neurosurgeon Josh Ritter wears his heart on his sleeve more than most thanks to his intimate, poetic style that has infused the majority of his albums over the last decade. His 2013 album “The Beast In Its Tracks” documented his fragile post-divorce mental state, even though he’d already long since moved on and had a child with his new partner. The happier songs from that new life finally popped up on 2017’s “Gathering”; a rockier, more carefree collection of songs that has been backed up amicably by his new LP “Fever Breaks”. Despite the tone, there are
a few fundamental differences between the two. Where “Gathering” was fast, loose and freewheeling, “Fever Breaks” is sharp and lean, thanks largely to producer Jason Isbell, who also lends his day-job backing band The 400 Unit to proceedings. Little is wasted on Fever Breaks, whether it’s the standout lead guitar work of Sadler Vaden, or Ritter’s always superlative lyrics, honed and polished to near perfection. Dan Ashcroft

SPA
Lumbung Spa Look The namesake spa is located in Villa Lumbung on Petitenget, nestled on the more peaceful side away from the busy streets of Seminyak. The decor has a strong traditional vibe that’s organic, warm, and welcoming. You can book a treatment in an outdoor gazebo by a lagoon and mini waterfall for that quintessential Balinese nature-luxe experience. The Treatment We were treated to the signature Couple Lumbung Spa Getaway, an ultimate treatment that left us feeling pampered and primed from head to toe. The first treatment is a 60-minute Balinese massage with aromatherapy, which begins with relaxing acupressure movements along the back and the legs. As scented oil is slathered generously on your body, the therapist will transition to solid kneading strokes, then finishing with nerve-stimulating skin rolls and flicking. After the relaxing massage therapy, we were taken in for the Lumbung Facial. This restorative treatment is a highlight with a
natural face cleanser that proceeds into a series of cooling sensations brought on by the toners. Immediately, our skin felt nourished and healthier. The final step to seal in all that goodness was a gel face mask and moisturizer that had us ready to glow and go. Ingredients Lumbung spa’s products are natural and include no preservatives or additives, making it suitable for all types of skin including sensitive. The choice of essential aromatherapy oils for the massage are soothing coconut, rich chocolate, and refreshing lavender. For the facial, fresh cucumber, candlenut and yogurt were used in the treatment. Magic Lumbung Spa is designed to reinvigorate the mind and body, particularly for those suffering from muscle pain or jet-lag. The top quality treatments and tranquil vibes left us feeling more energetic, refreshed, and in a better mood all day. www.thebeatbali.com
